Die Spedition Bode in Reinfeld legt seine, niegelnagelneue, LKW-Flotte (25 SZM, Iveco) still. Grund: Diese Fahrzeuge sind Gas-betrieben und damit nicht mehr rentabel...

So in the spirit of Dracula Daily, I’ve decided to watch all of the Dracula-related movies I can find. I just watched the Bela Lugosi film and.......wow is it nothing like the book, holy cow. Like we give modern book-to-movie adaptations crap.
There’s no Quicney or Arthur, which already is a big downgrade.
Reinfeld is the solicitor that meets Dracula instead of Jonathan, which they use to explain why he went crazy and why he’s Drac’s servant.
Best friend Jonathan is....kinda just there? He doesn’t do much, which is wild coming off the book.
They nerfed Mina HARD and also she’s Dr. Seward’s daughter oh and Lucy is there too I guess but she gets the axe pretty quickly, and the fact she turned into a vampire and is eating children is more like a sidenote rather than part of the plot.
Reinfeld is institutionalized at Seward’s hospital, but there are so many moments where he just.....walks into the living spaces??? and though it’s established that he’s always breaking out, most ofthe time the reactions from everyone else is like “What did you say, old chap? Dracula is nearby??” instead of, idk, “How did you get out of your cell” or “Someone help, a crazy person is in my living room!”
I wasn’t expecting a lot of violence and scares because this IS the 30′s, but it was still pretty underwhelming and not very suspenseful. Not sure how much of that is because I’m used to modern suspense movies.
Also they ignore the "Dracula can't enter homes uninvited" thing, which wouldn't be so bad except they did establish that as a rule early on.
Oh and one nitpick: the ship Drac arrived on wasn't even called the Demeter?? It was called the Vesta??? Why change the name, it's such a weird minor detail.
Even so, still worth a watch because Bela Lugosi is iconic and I NEED to see more of the guy who played Reinfeld because hot diggity damn did that man act his heart out.

Can't believe it's been 3 days since we've heard from Jonathon. I'm so stressed. What if Dracula caught him?? I got so excited when he left his room and now silence again! Ahhh! What Jonathon thinks is his death day is soon. I'm nervous xD

Some amazing findings
Tumblr media
I bought this book today from a man who sells things related to old cameras and some books for $250MXN (around $15USD). Artbooks are usually expensive, so I bought it almost immediately. I was so happy but later I realized I could have got a better price if I bargained. I still think I got it at a good price. The dusk jacket is a bit damaged and the covers are dirty, I hope I can make it look better.
Tumblr media
I also bought some Chess Books written by Fred Reinfeld in an second hand bookstore. Old books are actually kind of expensive! But the bookstore has a 30% off every first Saturday of the month (I didn't knew about this discount until the cashier told me) so they were pretty cheap: $350MXN for both books (around $20USD). They're so old the use descriptive notation. I'll return next month to buy more chessbooks.

Next in my Dracula movie marathon is Dan Curtis’s Dracula. A lot more true to the book, although still has some big changes like: Best friend Jonathan Harker is the solicitor, but he ends up getting killed in Drac’s castle at the beginning, and doesn’t appear again until the end when he’s revealed to be a vampire....and then killed again.
Once again, no Quincey. (I’m pretty sure that’s going to be true of alot if not all Dracula movies considering the first time I’ve ever heard of him was my first readthrough of the book, despite over a hundred years of cultural relevance.) No Dr. Seward either, aside from a quick mention, and no Reinfeld. It’s just Helsing and Arthur (and somewhat Mina) taking care of business.
Mina was a little more active in this one, but still eventually relegated to “side character woman.” I like the actress a lot, and I think she would’ve played a good Mina as she is in the book.
Like people have mentioned before, the movies tend to paint Lucy’s sleepwalking problem as the Count’s influence - that’s the case here. Also his other brides are pretty cartoony, kind of like in the Lugosi film.
They couldn’t afford/risk using actual wolves for this film, so instead the characters were often attacked/chased by a horde of German Shepherds. This is not a complaint. It was hilarious.
The most interesting deviation from the book is how they handled the Count. They tried ot make him more sympathetic (while also giving him a reason to go to England to begin with) by showing that Lucy look excalty like the woman he fell in love with and died during one of his wars. It didn’t really work for me, but there were some sweet moment to come out of it.
The final scene where the Count dies is incredible, very intense where Helsing is backlit by the dawn as he deals the final blow. He and Arthur leave the Count to die alone, and the last shot of the movie is a slow pan out on the Count passing away with the sounds of long-ago battle in his ears.
In general, not as suspenseful as I would like. Same as the Lugosi film, this movie focuses more on Dracula and his POV, which can be great, but seeing too much of his side of the story takes away the mystery and fear of his next move, plus making him sympathetic isn’t as scary. I know one big complaint of certain monster movies is “Too much focus on the people! Show us the monster!” but in the case of stories that are supposed to be suspenseful, less is more. That’s part of what made the book so scary - we don’t know what Drac is doing, we can only piece together who he is, what he can do, and what he’s planning from secondhand accounts.
Overall, I enjoyed this one a bit more than the Lugosi film, but I don’t think I would watch it a second time.

Fuck marry kill. Hoult as Tolkien. Hoult as Peter in The Great. Hoult as Reinfeld
Ooooh anon, you didn’t make this one easy!!!
I suppose I could make this slightly easier on myself if I were to approach it from some dumb “moral high ground” angle…
But screw that! I ain’t passing up the opportunity to f*** Peter. 😂
Which leaves two sweethearts who I absolutely adore to marry and kill. 🥺😰
Renfield, who just got his life back after 90 years of servitude
and freaking Tolkien
…….….l…………….
I’m sorry, but I just can’t bring myself to kill Renfield.
So I guess that leaves (and I can’t believe I’m saying this)… Tolkien for me to kill.
I full-on SWOONED when I watched his declaration of love in that movie, but in the end - his speech was for someone else, so I guess he’s dying for that. 🤷🏽‍♀️😅
So, to recap:
F*** Peter
Marry Renfield
Kill Tolkien
