#repost etiquette

Apparently much-needed reminder that reposting artists' art (by saving the images or screenshotting them and reuploading them yourself) on other platforms without the artists' expressed permission and without credit is theft and an insult to their passion and craft. You are profiting (in views, in attention, in feedback) from someone else's work and ideas, who do not get that feedback for sharing their creation.
If you are an art reposter, you are a thief and I have no respect for you.

I've been seeing a big influx of reposted art in MXTX fandom tags and it's making me fucking insane and furious so I'm gonna make this real simple.
If you did not create a piece of art work, and you do not have either explicit or passive permission from the person who did, DO NOT POST THE ART.
Explicit permission: you personally asked them and they directly said yes.
Passive permission: there is a statement on their account indicating they allow reposts.
There are no other options. If neither of the above is the case, do not post it.
There is exactly one exception: official art. You should still credit the artist if possible but you don't need their permission. And if you're not sure it's official art, refer back to above.
I'm so sick of this shit. I don't care if you saw it on Pinterest or Facebook. You can't assume other reposters had permission, get it yourself or don't post. I don't care if you can't access Weibo. You're not fucking entitled to steal the hard work of other creators. Full stop.

because i've been asked, here's a post for new tumblr users about reblogging vs reposting
reblogging is what this site is built on. the circulation of posts. to reblog a post, look for the symbol below on a post and press it
Tumblr media
why is reblogging good?
it helps a creator's work get spread. even if you only have 1 follower, reblogging allows that 1 follower to see something they might not have seen otherwise. liking posts is nice, but unlike instagram there is no algorithm on tumblr and you liking a post doesnt help it reach others. reblogging does, so if you like something, hit reblog!
reposting is theft, essentially. reposting is when you right click and save an image to your computer or phone and then you post it on your own blog. reposting is taking someone else's work and claiming it as your own. doing this will get you reported which can lead to your blog being suspended. there is no excuse for reposting. do not ever repost
why is reposting bad?
aside from you stealing someone's work? its bad because people will think you created that thing and it deprives the actual creator of any credit or support. no content creator on this site will thank you for it, its just wrong. please do not repost
reblogging and reposting are not the same thing. please do not confuse them

Guys, I am so serious: I see you reposting my gifs, artwork, or creations OR someone else’s gifs, artwork, or creations, and I will block you immediately! I operate on a zero-tolerance theft policy.

Ironically enough, I'm reposting this because OP has turned off reblogs on the original (since they don't want any more attention on their blog), but I still think this is a message that needs to be spread for the benefit of all the new people and as a helpful reminder for everyone else!

I'm gonna start blocking people posting screenshots of other tumblr posts
I just spent ten minutes searching for the original post without the stupid addition (almost completely out of spite) but because the search is broken - no dice

Number one rule of tumblr:
DO REBLOG DON’T REPOST
Tumblr is known for excessive reblogs. You will see bloggers go on reblogging rampage, and that's very normal also a form of showing the creator their work is being appreciated.
Here is a tutorial on what are REBLOG and how to REBLOG by @tips
You can make any posts you want here, however DO NOT STEAL others work to make your own post.
I see a post, I hit like & reblog like the simpleton I am, that’s it.
Tumblr media
Don't save the post and repost, it takes away the credit from original creator. And honestly quite shameless of you to STEAL from someone who spent their time making them.
Tumblr media
Since last night there has been a lot of asks regarding this topic. Even answered how to add gif with proper credit in this other post.
Hopefully this has been helpful, try looking up posts from @tips  @staff to see how this hellsite operates.

Hey! I just wanted to let you know that somebody has posted your comic sans comic on reddit in the Undertale subreddit as well as the general comic subreddit. They’ve credited you in the comments and everything, but I just wanted to give you a heads up in case they didn’t ask you first/if you’re not cool with it.
... Huh. Thank you for letting me know- I don't use Reddit, so I had no idea :')!!
They didn't ask, and I'm not a fan of reposting, but I do appreciate the credit (and the fact that they have been correcting people on That One Panel)
Honestly, I'm not sure how to feel about this!! On one hand I'm flattered that it was... "cool" enough to get shared to another site, but on the other hand I'm a little miffed that it was reposted in the first place?
I... is there even anything I can do here?? What is Reddit etiquette? I know reposting is pretty common there, and I'm not really inclined to report them or ask them to take it down if that's part of the post economy/ecosystem, you know?
Thank you again for letting me know, but I uh. have no idea what to do about this!

a good rule of thumb for everyone to follow is if you personally didnt create the image or gif you are going to post or have expressed permission from the person that did create it, do. not. post it. it doesnt belong to you, you are reposting and you will get publicly called out and mass reported

I usually don't post fanart here, let alone stuff from my own (wip) AU fanfic. However, the story is turning into such a whump goldmine, i felt compelled to share.

I’m sure you guys have all heard this before, but I really need to say it again:
It’s really harmful to me as a small creator when bigger channels (or any channel, small or big) take my videos and re-upload/repost them to their channel. I spend a lot of time on all of the things I create, and people taking them without my permission and posting them to any place that isn’t mine, regardless of whether they say “knox made this”, it’s still SO incredibly harmful to me. It’s discouraging, it’s stealing something I’ve created and using it for their own personal gain without my permission and it makes it really hard to want to keep sharing the things I create.
If you want to support a creator, or a show, don’t take other people’s videos, art or writing and repost it. Just don’t do it. Make your own content, or link to the original source and tell your following to go check out your favourite creators.
These creators are clearly not your favourites if you repost their work to your socials. Whether it be YouTube, instagram, twitter, Pinterest, Tumblr, or any other social media. If you truly like the free content a creator gives you, don’t steal their work or repost/re-upload their things without their explicit permission. If a creator is okay with that, and they give you permission, it’s okay. But for me personally it will never be okay. Dubbed comics, tribute videos for characters using my art, my writing and videos posted elsewhere so “more people will see it” does not help me.
Linking to my original posts? That helps me. Reblogging my stuff? That helps me. Leaving lovely tags? That helps me. It encourages me to continue sharing what I create for free. And makes so I have a good experience interacting with the online community.
Reposting my work? Re-uploading my videos? Taking my art and writing without my permission and using it for your own videos or blogs? That hurts. It’s disrespectful, and it makes me not want to share what I create publicly anymore. It certainly doesn’t mean I’ll stop creating things, but I sure as heck won’t be sharing my stuff with anyone outside my close friend group.
In Summary: If you like a creator, don’t take their stuff. Link their stuff. Talk about how much you like what they create and give links to their blog, channel, or wherever else they might be so that people can find them and they’ll have more interaction which will, in turn, encourage them to make more content and share more things with you and their following.

twitter's new terms of service make it so much more important that reposting stops, holy fuck. ofc i'll be deleting my old art from twitter and never posting there again but there's nothing i can do if someone chooses to take my art and post it there themself.
