SUMMARY: Set in 1998, this origin story explores the secrets of the mysterious Spencer Mansion and the ill-fated Raccoon City.
The mod likes this cast, but as a fan of the games, she's not too sure about this movie, you'll have to let her know if it's any good.

Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City (2021)
A squad of police officers and some survivors fight to stay alive when the residents of their city turn into flesh hungry monsters.
Much of the appeal for this film comes in how it’s adapted from the original game. There are various sequences copied directly from cut-scenes and plenty of references regarding the rest of the franchise. It was effective to explore the iconic original locations like the police station and mansion and they seemed faithful to the designs.
Most of the characters felt too different from the source material to be engaging enough to carry the drama. There are a lot of them to divide the audience alignment and some actors aren’t suited to the roles, even though some actors like the Leon one are good he’s so far changed from the game that he almost becomes incidental when he should be carrying the action.
The creature designs are effective, especially the lickers and the zombies were wilder and distorted which made them more threatening than other movie zombies. The G-virus creature was good too although the boggle eye should have been bigger as that’s the best part. Some of the action was entertaining and there was a little variety, although one technique was repeated too many times, when someone is in danger and the threat is terminated by someone off-screen.
One of the main troubles is that there’s precious little plot in game adaptations unless an entirely new story is created using the lore, like the main movie line. Although there’s enough to keep a game going from scene to scene and between different areas, for a film it felt like there were few actual twists and the gaps were plugged with basic jump scares.
4/10 -It’s below average, but only just!-
-In a film a child is seen ripping wings off a dragonfly and Claire has a dragonfly wing necklace. In Resident Evil: Code Veronica you have to collect dragonfly wings to progress.
-The poster behind the orphanage worker watching TV at the beginning is of the healing spray available in the games.
-The film doesn’t explain why such a small town has so many police and resources, in the game it is at least referenced that the station is based in a converted art museum.

"It's Jill's sandwich now."
Remember the Resident Evil games? Remember the 90's? Well, this movie sure does, and it will make damn sure you know it.
It's like they wanted to follow the story of the video games more closely this time around, but they couldn't decide where to start, so simply chose not to choose. It's essentially RE2, except that it's also RE1, except it's the REmake, and it's sort of RE2make, oh and don't forget Code Veronica.
All your favourite characters are here, and I do mean all of them. This movie had so many damn characters and not one of them had faithful, or even just meaningful characterisation. The only ones with noticeable personalities were Claire and Leon. She was decent, but they made him into an annoying, incompetent buffoon for no reason.
Oh yeah and they cut Barry Burton. They felt the need to cram Richard Aiken, Lisa Trevor, and the Ashford twins into this disaster of a movie, but they didn't bother to include Barry Motherfucking Burton? Disgusting.
Because the plot tried to cover a malformed amalgamation of so many things, it didn't cover anything well. The pacing was all over the place, starting out glacial and later glossing past things at breakneck speed. I'm pretty sure anyone without prior franchise knowledge would have been totally lost by the end.
There was a bit where William Birkin re-animated and immediately started stalking and taunting Chris, but I couldn't for the life of me tell you why. He had been killed by Wesker before Chris even arrived, but inexplicably both knew he was around and really wanted him dead for some reason.
It felt like even the writers couldn't keep track of what was happening, or why. Sherry was addressed in the final scenes, but I had forgotten she even existed. I'm not even sure if she had dialogue after her introduction, but I guess the others knew her name somehow.
There were so many little references to the video games: The Jill sandwich line, the zombie saying ITCHY TASTY, the truck exploding, the dogs in the parking garage, the exact zombie reveal shot from RE1. Hell, they even used a Club key to unlock a door. It was the most cursory kind of fan service, and might have even been endearing if the movie was actually good.
Oh yeah and the CGI was cheap and nasty. The zombies were bland as hell, the dogs looked like shit, and transformed Birkin was particularly awful. I think there was like one conceptually interesting shot lit only by muzzle flashes, but in practice it was muddled and impossible to follow.
I didn't expect this to be good, but I at least expected it to be fun. It was neither.
