Things you rarely see today but used to be in every town (quoting Wikipedia, there were "12,000 stores across the United States from 1920 to 1977"): Rexall Drugs. Above are two of the store in the town where I grew up from the mid-1980s. Rexall still exists in some way -- they're all over Canada as a thriving company, yet are sporadically around the United States (such as Ranko's in Tacoma) because the chain dissolved but some former franchise stores have kept the name.
There's only one vestage of the once-mighty Rexall Drugs still in existance and you've been there: Corporate decided they wanted to try competing with 7-Eleven in 1958, and created six stores in Los Angeles under the name "Pronto Mart". In time Rexall decided to end that venture, but the man managing the stores bought them out instead of closing them. The manager was Joe Coulombe and the stores (after a change in name and marketing direction) are now called Trader Joe's.
Bonus note about this particular store, which closed around 1987: The signage on the corner over the entrance says it was also a member of the IDL drugstores (Independant Drug League), which disbanded in the 1960s yet I recall there being several drugstores in my neck of the woods that still used the name into the 1980s. The logo is half-obscured in my photos so here it is another way:

In America, the deeply archetypal notion of the town (the Old Norse 'tun'), has been particularly resonant: 'Small Town America', 'Our Town' and 'Main Street' are all coded signifiers of Americanized virtue. However, at other times 'town' can signify a kind of gossipy Peyton Place where individual freedom may be nullified by group mores and neighborhood nosiness. Writing of Oak Park, Illinois, Ernest Hemingway described it as a place of 'wide lawns and narrow minds'. Several years after Shore made his sunlit picture, another artist, Gregory Crewdson, was repeatedly casting North Adams as a noir municipality where a darker reality waits in the bushes just beyond the white picket fence. Regardless of which view of town is taken, when the town/country duality is made, town is portrayed as the dark urban merchant, evil in comparison to the bright virtues of Nature and rural living. Nothing trumps Nature - it is pure, it is good. Its mythic credentials run deeper than those of any old 'tun'. Because Wilderness has not been touched by the hand of man, it provides a clean slate for the projection of idealized human attributes - or at least it did until the English critic John Ruskin came along in 1856 and referred to the personification of Nature as the 'Pathetic Fallacy’. The town/country or civilization/wild duality takes form in this picture in the contrast between a Rexall Drug store, where the cures for urban ills can be purchased, and the green hills in the distance rising up to a blue sky that does not admit of any ills at all. At the base of the hill is a white building that resembles a small-scale Parthenon. Look carefully and you will see that the second-floor windows of this distant edifice are slightly smaller than those of the first, and that the third story windows are slightly smaller still, so that the eye is tricked into seeing a noble building of classical proportions without receding lines. The explanation for this mini-temple goes back to the 1820s and 1830s, when America fancied itself the modern incarnation of democratic ancient Greece. New England, in particular, embraced this notion. Erudite Boston was regarded as the Athens of America; Lucy Larcom and the Lowell Mill Girls rose before dawn to read Ovid, and Greek revival architecture found its way to the hill country.

Hi, do you think Tracy was in Canada? And what makes you think she was in Canada?
I do! Because little video she posted on her IG stories where she pointed out Jefferson White on the Yellowstone calendar was taken in a Rexall which is a Canadian drug store (like a walgreens where they sell stuff other than just medicine).

Five New Pizza Restaurants With a Wood Fire
Tumblr media
Whenever I look at the pizza menu at my favorite pizza restaurant in the city, I am blown away by how delicious the pizzas are. That is because the pizza is prepared with a special wood fire. This fire helps to burn the fat from the pizza and gives it a delicious smoky flavor. It also makes the pizza very juicy.
Crust & Craft
Located on Coastal Highway in Rehoboth Beach, Crust & Craft is a local establishment that offers great food and craft beer. The menu features hand crafted wood fired pizzas and other delicious flavors. You can also take advantage of their incredible Happy Hour specials.
The restaurant offers a variety of specialty pizzas, pastas, and sandwiches. In addition, you can enjoy a variety of salads and appetizers. You can also order takeout or make reservations. The restaurant accepts credit cards and offers a variety of specials.
The wood fired pizza oven produces an intense heat. The heat enables the pizza to cook quickly. The crust is baked with a lightly charred edge, which adds to its flavor. The toppings are cooked evenly.
Osteria Cotta
Located on the Upper West Side, Osteria Cotta serves up the best of both Italian and American cuisines. Using only the finest locally sourced ingredients, the chefs put together meals that are a cut above the competition. Whether you are looking for a quick lunch, a late night snack or a quick drink before hitting the theater, Osteria Cotta is the place to be. Their wine list is impressive, and the staff is friendly. The best part is that it’s open late, so you can pop in for a bite to eat after a night on the town.
In addition to pizza, Osteria Cotta serves an impressive array of wood fired roasted free range chicken. The best part is that the chicken isn’t too heavy, making it an excellent choice for a first date or reunion dinner.
Lucali
Among New York’s pizza-obsessed, Lucali’s pizza has become a rite of passage. The artisanal pizza is made with a hand-stretched dough and baked in a wood-fired oven. The pizza’s thin crust holds its shape under a velvety tomato sauce and three types of cheese.
Mark Iacono, the pizzamaker who owns Lucali, is a native of Brooklyn’s Carroll Gardens neighborhood. He worked for Pasquale Jones and Speedy Romeo before founding the pizza shop. He was born across the street from Louie’s Candy Store, the old candy shop that his father owns.
Lucali’s menu is limited to pizza and calzone. The pizzas are made with simple toppings. They’re a classic Neapolitan style.
Rossopomodoro
Located in the former Rexall Drug Store on Fifth Avenue, Rossopomodoro is a Neapolitan pizza chain with a number of branches around the world. Rossopomodoro’s pizza is a tasty if a bit pricey, but it’s still cheaper than going to Naples for a pie.
The aforementioned pizza is a no brainer, but the Rossopomodoro also has a surprisingly impressive list of Italian specialties, including spaghetti vongole and monkfish. The store also sells pantry goods such as olive oil and balsamic vinegar, along with a fine selection of caviar and charcuterie. It also has a cute little bar.
In terms of pizza, Rossopomodoro offers a number of red sauce pizzas. The most interesting pizza is the one that combines San Marzano tomatoes, mozzarella di bufala and Parmigiano-Reggiano. The pie is topped with arugula and a dash of prosciutto.
Buffalo
Located at 1308 Buffalo Road in Gates, this upscale restaurant boasts a wood-burning oven in the style of the legendary Sicilian chef Mario Batali. For lunch and dinner, the menu is full of artisanal pizzas, entrees and salads. You can order your pizza by phone, email or online.
The pizza is a bit pricey but the quality of the crust is well worth the price. The kitchen also has a full bar and a selection of wines. The restaurant serves lunch and dinner, seven days a week. The best time to order is mid-day. You can also order your pizza on the go with their delivery service.
Neapolitan style
Authentic Neapolitan style pizza is made with high quality ingredients, fresh mozzarella, and fresh basil. It is cooked in an extremely hot wood fire, producing a crisp and delicious pizza.
Neapolitan pizza is also known for its distinctive flavor. To make an authentic Neapolitan style pizza, you need to use Italian flour and fresh ingredients. Pizza ovens must also be made from wood. The wood fire gives pizza its signature flavor.
Authentic Neapolitan pizza is made with San Marzano tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, and basil. It is typically served with a simple tomato sauce. Pizza ovens should be heated to between 430 and 480 degrees Celsius. These temperatures will create large air bubbles in the crust, giving it a crisp and charred finish.

Chamberlain Prepares for Friday Signing Event at Strand Theatre
(Publisher's Note:) This story by John W. Miller - owner of Moundsville.org - first appeared before Mr. Chamberlain's book signing was scheduled for this Friday, so we decided to re-publish it to promote the 4-6 p.m. event. Refreshments will be served.) During the 1950s and 1960s, when Randy Chamberlain was a boy in Moundsville, WV, people in the evenings “sat on their front porches talking with each other,” he told me. Chamberlain, 77, is a retired insurance rep, radio DJ and grocer, and city councilman who’s lived in Moundsville his whole life. In 2018, Charlie Walton, the editor of The Moundsville Daily Echo, asked Chamberlain to write for the paper. Chamberlain, a born storyteller with a rich radio voice, produced Around the Mound, a charming weekly reflection on his beloved town and his life spent there. Chamberlain wrote the column for three years, and gave it up when he picked up a seat on City Council. He didn’t want to compromise his journalistic integrity. But recently, he published a 150-page book called Memories From Around the Mound: Tokens of a Thriving Town (you can buy it here), a collection of his columns and some photographs. The book’s been selling out all over town, and popping up with praise on Facebook, so yesterday I drove to Moundsville to ask Chamberlain why he thought it had been so successful. “People have really connected with it,” he told me over a cheeseburger at Bob’s Lunch. “People do tend to think that things were much better when they were young, but I also think we’re doing okay now.” Chamberlain is an optimist, and he’s right: Moundsville is doing better than most Ohio Valley towns.  The history of the Moundsville Mound extends far beyond what we know to this day, but Chamberlain tells many tales in his book. In part, Memories From Around the Mound is a personal memoir and a narrative of shared American culture, especially musical. Chamberlain, a music maniac, chronicles his path into professional radio and America’s journey from Big Band to Rock and Roll, and tells charming stories about discovering Connie Francis, Bobby Vinton and Jerry Lewis. There are also stories about important shared moments in America history and culture, such as watching the Marx Brothers, The Three Stooges, Superman, and quiz shows that turned out to be rigged, receiving the Sears-Roebuck catalogue ahead of Christmas, and experiencing news of the dropping the atomic bombs on Japan and the assassination of President Kennedy. But the most touching parts of the book are Chamberlain’s descriptions of the community he experienced in Moundsville growing up in the 1950s and 1960s. Moundsville around Christmas reminded Chamberlain of the town of Bedford Falls in It’s a Wonderful Life. There were no shopping malls then, and people walked along Jefferson Ave, crisscrossed with artificial pine, Christmas wreaths and outdoor lights. In the 1950s, Randy’s family didn’t own a car. “That meant we walked as a rule,” he writes. “In the winter when there was snow on the ground, our father would get out our sleds and pull us to grandma’s house. We were always excited to arrive at grandma’s. We knew there would be hot chocolate and fresh-baked raisin or chocolate chip cookies which grandma kept in an old marshmallow tin.” Around that time, there were dozens of grocery stores in around and Moundsville. Chamberlain can still rattle off the names: Berry, Bonar, Cheslick, Gamble, Hill, Koontz, Simmons and Weaver. And those were among dozens of other local businesses: Rexall Drug, Jim’s Shoe Repair and Store, Remke Furniture and Appliance. (One of them, Ruttenberg’s, is still around and I’ve written about it here.) Moundsville residents once decorated the Mound, but protesters successfully halted the practice more than 30 years ago. Chamberlain worked at one when he was a teenager and owned his own store from 1966-1972. “We sold all the things you need for daily life,” he said. “We got produce from local farmers whenever we could.” One of the functions that these stores could fulfill in the community was extending credit to workers during strikes. There were dozens of factories around Moundsville, many of them unionized. “When strikes occurred, it was the neighborhood grocery store that offered credit that was the working man’s lifeline.” Another function of the grocery store was to connect people with news. “Some might call it gossip,” Chamberlain writes. “Regardless, you knew who was moving into the neighborhood, or moving out. You were among the first to learn when a family was expecting a new addition. Whatever the news, one was likely to learn about it first from his neighborhood grocer.” I asked Chamberlain to reflect on what’s caused people to retreat from each other, even in Moundsville, where people no longer sit on their front porches in the evening. Was it car culture, big retail, shopping malls or suburbanization? Part of the problem is screens sucking our attention away from the reality of human contact. “Technology can be good and can be bad, and right now we’re seeing the bad side,” he said. And we need to chat with neighbors, share stories and relate to people who aren’t like us. There’s no technology, political party or TED Talk that will ever change that. The truth, wrote Flannery O’Connor “does not change according to our ability to stomach it emotionally.” So I think we need to celebrate the small-town nostalgia of Randy Chamberlain, because it points to something that will also be true in the future, wherever you live. This information will give you a clear understanding of the financial responsibility associated with purchasing Ozempic. If your health insurance plan does not cover Ozempic or provides limited coverage, you may have alternative options to explore.
