I should’ve known this would happen.
I should’ve known that I eventually would start questioning my feelings for Rhea.
What started off as something completely casual and no strings attached, now feels like its quickly turned into something far more intense than I was expecting and I hated to admit it.
I told myself that things wouldn’t get weird.
Even when Baron, who despite our age difference, was one of my biggest confidantes aside from Rhea herself, made it a point to warn me about how messy things could get if she and I weren’t careful.
“I think you need to use your big girl voice and tell Rhea how you feel. This is getting stupid,” he said.
“Stupid, uh? Oh, you’re soooo wise.” I had replied, chuckling at the deadpan look on his face.
“I’m just sayin’. Stop lying to her and to yourself. Tell her how you feel. If she doesn’t feel the same, so fucking what? You’ll live. You two are far worse off now than before.” Baron replied.
Naturally, I did my best to convince him that he was wrong.
That I didn’t have to say a word to Rhea because no way did I have any kind of feelings for her other than affection and lust at best.
And no way did she have any kinda feelings for me either.
Of course, Corbs bought none of the crock o’ shit I was trying to feed him.
What an absolute clown I was…
Our casual arrangement began shortly after I joined The Judgement Day.
It seemed like a no brainer to us at the time.
We slowly began to get to know each other, inside and out.
And I couldn’t deny that Rhea was insanely hot and she found me just as attractive, we practically shared the same schedule and we agreed that we weren’t looking for anything serious.
So, we thought, ‘’Why look elsewhere?’
We should’ve.
Oratleast I should’ve looked elsewhere.
I should’ve had enough sense to not quite literally fuck around with someone I still have to work with.
Because now things are weird between us and I’m constantly being suffocated by these growing feelings that I’ve tried to stifle every god damned day with zero success.
I found myself overanalyzing every move I made when it came to her.
Missing her whenever she wasn’t around- which doesn’t sound that out of the ordinary seeing as like I said, we are very close.
But this felt different than just missing a close friend.
It was this almost constant burning in my gut and in my chest that would only get stronger with every passing second until I saw her again.
Until we kissed again...I didn’t just think about the amazing sex we had.
I’d remember a conversation we had, or a compliment she had given me days prior that would leave me blushing as hard as it did when she’d said it.
Or I’d walk into a shop at home and find things that I thought she might like, and I’d make a mental note to bring it up to her before catching myself.
It was just a constant stream of ‘RheaRheaRhea’…
Some days I was left counting down the seconds before I got to be near her again.
And just the sound of her voice whenever we’d talk over the phone on our days off was enough to turn me into a fuckin schoolgirl.
That all sounds bad enough.
But I knew I had to end things the second I started wondering if maybe, just maybe Rhea felt just as out of whack as I did.
I’d catch myself wondering if Rhea’s lips had lingered a little longer than usual against mine.
Or if she noticed me holding onto her a little tighter whenever it came time for either of us to do our own thing.
Or if her sudden desire to stay over my place sometimes, along with her obsession with leaving very noticeable lovebites and bruises on my body whenever we’d fool around meant anything.
Wondering if I was imagining the slightly possessive way in which she’d drape her arm around my shoulders whenever we were out in public or if it was all in my head.
Baron thinks we’re in love.
But that can’t be true… can it?
…Nah.
He had no idea what he was talking about.
…Fuck.
‘Corbs is wrong. This is just lust. We clicked and she just also happens to be a champ in the sheets…but it’ll pass.’
I said to myself.
But every day felt like a constant battle of telling myself I was confusing things.
I kept telling myself that our dynamic morphed into something so much more intimate, so surely wires were bound to be crossed.
Putting all of those things together in my head, I was 10000% sure of my decision to end things.
If Rhea asks me why, I’ll tell her it’s because I met someone, which isn’t untrue.
I did meet someone while on the road.
In my quest to calm the raging flames of these emotions burning deep inside of me, I did what I should’ve done in the first place.
I started looking elsewhere.
And I met Danny.
He’s a sweet, good-natured small-town boy from Missouri I met about a month ago.
I had started to distance myself from Rhea and the rest of the group right around that time as well.
I haven’t told anyone about Danny, not even Corbs.
Before I felt comfortable bringing Danny around on the road, I wanted to get this Rhea situation handled first…

Lupercalia pt 3.
Chthonic, Apotropaic, Purification, and Fertility
Let us continue with Lycaeus. Classical Greek religion, as it was with the Italian Ligurians, was a blend of the cults of the indigenous peoples inhabiting the Aegean Sea (the Pelasgians) and Aryan settlers during the Bronze Age.
The Pelasgians were agrarian, buried their dead, and exhibited a belief in the afterlife. They had an earth mother as a supreme object of worship, similar to the Rhea or Cybele. She personified the life giving qualities of the earth, rain, crops, and fertility, but was also fearsome: she inflicted disease, attacked herds with predatory beasts, or unleashed the buried dead. As the Pelasgians were a settled people Her worship was highly localized. Figures of men in animal skins found on gems or seals are interpreted to be her priests, honoring her by wearing the pelts of sacred animals.
Homage was paid to her in the form of fertility rites to secure the rains and good harvest. If She withheld her boons her devotees would turn to rites of purification to rid themselves of the offending human sin. This would involve human sacrifice, as seen in archaeological evidence and in fables such as the Minotaur. This chthonic religion is uniquely non-Hellenic, bearing no resemblance to primitive Aryan religion.[x]
The Aryans were nomadic in lifestyle, their dead were cremated, their gods were anthropomorphic and traveled with them. This is reflected in the Homeric Poems: indifference to chthonic deities, the use of funeral pyres, no tombs or cults for the worship of heroes, and no dread of ghosts or demons. They worshiped variations of a supreme sky god or All-Father. In time, the integration of the Aryans into the Mediterranean displaced goddess worship, subordinating Her to he who would become Zeus.
The Aryans, finding themselves settling down in a new land among established peoples integrated the gods they found there rather than risk either divine or political wrath (a strategy that persists into the Roman Empire). And so the Pelasgian chthonic deities did not fully disappear but rather changed form to the rites of Brauronian Artemis, the Elysian Mysteries, and (more relevant to us) human sacrifice to Zeus Lycaeus. Those regions with the least Aryan transfusion - Attica, Arcadia, Crete, Boetia, and Lycia - had the strongest presence of chthonic cults. As we have seen the pattern of deity displacement and absorption with Aryan immigration, we might conclude whenever worship is localized to a tree, natural structure, or a place there is a strong probability that the root of the worship is pre-Aryan.
Lycaeus
In Arcadia the most venerated cult belonged to the god Varro and Isidorus named Lycaeus, meaning wolf. The seat of the cult was Mount Lycaeus, its capitol Lycaon (reputedly the oldest city in Greece). Lycaeus was a destructive, chthonic god, a protector of animals, and sender of rain. He was the embodiment of the prowling danger. His shrine was something of a wildlife refuge as no men were allowed to set foot there for fear of death.
Every nine years the festival of Lycaea or Lykaia (the prototype of the Lupercalia) was held. Sacrifices were expiatory; made to appease Lyceaus and keep him from preying upon the people and their flocks. Pausanias relates the practice of human sacrifice with the sacrificial blood sprinkled on the altar and the entrails given to the priest as sacrament. It was believed those who ate of the sacrificial victim would be transformed into wolves and sent into exile until the following festival.
Frazer (the Golden Bough, iv, 83) suggests that these priests may have disguised themselves in wolf pelts to perform the rites. If so, this echoes the worship of the Pelasgian Goddess and the numerous animal disguises depicted on Cretan seals. Similarly to the tale of Valeria Luperca, the legend of the king Lycaon being transformed into a wolf by Zeus may function as an analogy for the disgust the Hellenes held for human sacrifice, their (somewhat unsuccessful) attempt to stamp out the old ways, and the installation of their own All Father. Thus Lycaeus became an adjective for Zeus Lycaeus.
As we will see in the next post this subhumation did not quite fit Zeus, and fell to another god: Pan.

Corbs decided to host a party at his place and of course, we were all invited.
The incessant tension between Rhea and Danny reached a fever pitch from the moment we arrived at the get-together.
And the drinks we were all having certainly weren’t helping.
I was a bit tipsy myself, but I had abandoned the alcohol as soon as I felt the room spin even slightly.
I didn’t plan on getting sloppy drunk, especially with all this drama popping off.
I wanted to be as sober as possible so I didn’t say or do some shit that I might regret…
Well.
More than I’ve already done thus far, really.
‘’I’m sooo glad your mask has fallen off, mate. I really am. I was getting real sick of your ‘sweet churchboy’ act you were trying to pull off with everyone.’’ Rhea slurred angrily at Danny.
‘’Okay, can we not do this shit tonight? Cut it out.’’ Baron sighed, his shoulders tense and his features irritated, understandably so.
But Rhea and Danny completely ignored him, and they continued with their back and forth exchange that had been escalating through the night.
‘’You think I don’t know that you want my girlfriend?’’ Danny replied, slurring his words as well.
His unfocused gaze seemed to be searching Rhea’s for any reaction.
I sat next to Baron and sighed deeply as well, knowing that this wasn’t gonna end well.
‘’Seriously, guys. Enough.’’ I said, but they just pushed on like incessant children.
‘’Why? Does that bother you, Danny? What- you starting to think she’s getting under you to get over me and that bothers you? Threatens you?’’ Rhea smirked while the boys hissed underneath their breaths and I was looking for the nearest crevice to hide under.
Rhea’s words hit a nerve in both Danny and I for different reasons, but I certainly wasn’t expecting Danny’s response.
‘’Oh, please. I’m a god to her… she calls me Daddy.’’ Danny replied proudly, matching Rhea’s smirk as if he won the lottery.
As if he didn’t just say something completely fucking ridiculous.
Rhea wasn’t off the hook either, though.
‘’We didn’t need to know that…’’ Dom said awkwardly, the rest of the boys agreeing wholeheartedly.
‘’Danny…’’ Rhea chuckled.
‘’Somehow, I doubt that. But even if she did… just know that when she calls you that, she’s definitely not thinking about you, bro...’’ She said, laughing again at the stumped look on Danny’s face.
‘’Even if she- for some reason- breaks up with me for you. It won’t last. I give it a month tops… you’re not gonna ruin this for me, Rhea…’’ I heard Danny slur that last part lowly, almost as if talking to himself and thinking that he would go unheard.
‘’What’s that supposed to mean?’’ I piped in, hearing Corbs let out a soft ‘holy shit’ from his spot next to me.
I watched Danny go pale, realizing that in his drunk stupor, he had voiced his thoughts out loud.
‘’Nothing, babe… I’m so drunk right now…’’ Danny said, laughing softly as he rubbed his face.
But the damage was done.
I dropped Danny off at his place shortly after that.
With just those words out of Danny’s mouth, Rhea’s suspicions were confirmed.
His sudden desire to want to accompany me on the road wasn’t about wanting to be with me.
At that realization, I did feel a sting of hurt.
Call it ego or whatever, but it hurt.
But underneath that, there was relief.
I had found my chance.
My out.
And this time I wasn’t going to act aloof and dense, and I was going to take that out and run with it…

I broke up with Danny the very next morning.
I figured I wouldn’t keep either of us in suspense any longer.
He… didn’t react too kindly.
I ended up locking him in my home and staying in my car while I called Baron and then the cops to get Danny out of my house.
What I didn’t know was that Baron had also called Rhea.
I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t a relief to see her as well after being scared out of my fucking mind.
They arrived together before the police, and I let them both into my car.
Only, the second Rhea took notice of the forming bruises on my arms, she began heading into my house and I followed behind her.
‘’Open the door, H.’’ She said, once she realized it was locked.
‘’I don’t want him to get away.’’ I said, looking at her and the front door wearily.
‘’He won’t... Open the door or I'll open it myself.’’ She spoke.
There was a viciousness in her eyes and in her posture that made me shake my head.
I wasn’t willing to let her soil her hands on my behalf.
Running on instinct, I did what I felt in the moment.
I kissed her.
I kissed her and I felt her anger slowly drain away, making way for a look of concern once the kiss ended.
‘’Get in the car, Rhea. I need you here. With me. Not in the back of a cop car for assaulting that douchebag… Besides… I did this to myself. You were right. I used him to get over you-‘’ I rambled.
Rhea shook her head and guided us to my car where Baron waited for us.
‘’Good. No one else is going to jail.’’ He said, making Rhea and I chuckle half-heartedly.
Then Rhea turned her serious gaze on me.
‘’This isn’t your fault. I don’t give a damn if you strung him along. He didn’t have to put his hands on you.’’ She said and Baron murmured his agreement.
‘’Yeah- everyone involved acted really fucking childishly… but it's not an excuse, the guy’s a nutjob.’’ He said.
After the cops arrived and took Danny away, I settled in my place with Baron and Rhea for a bit before Baron had to tend to his family a little later in the evening, leaving me alone at my place with Rhea.
We sat in silence for a moment, letting the events of the night before and today sink in.
‘’I’ve been really fucking stupid…’’ I said softly as we cuddled in my bed.
Sinking into her warm body in my bed was exactly what I needed.
‘’I wasn’t helping the situation either… I’m sorry.’’ she said.
I accepted her apology and pressed my lips against hers for the second time that day, moaning softly as her tongue brushed against mine.
Kissing her and being with her even after everything that’s happened still felt like the easiest thing on Earth.
And I couldn’t wait to have more…
I surprised Rhea by straddling her lap and I shivered as her hands rubbed up and down my thighs while she looked up at me with a lazy smirk.

+ Wie funktioniert meine A/B/O-Gesellschaftsform? Aus historischen Gründen heraus werden in der modernen Gesellschaft Alphas und Omegas aber aus unterschiedlichen Gründen nicht besonders hoch angesehen. Betas erhalten bevorzugt Führungspositionen und haben im Grunde genommen das Sagen in der Gesellschaft, da Alphas als zu aggressiv und territorial gelten und Omegas als schwach und flatterhaft bzw. instabil – jeweils wegen ihrem Hormonhaushalt. Im 21. Jahrhundert gilt diese Vorstellung zwar als überholt und veraltet, und es gibt viele Gleichberechtigungsbewegungen, aber viele hängen trotzdem noch den alten Vorurteilen an. Auch deswegen, weil es stimmt, dass Betas eine beruhigende und stabilisierende Wirkung auf Alphas und Omegas haben (wegen den Pheromonen, die sie absondern). In dieser Fic haben alle drei sekundären Geschlechter einen Geruchssinn, der sie dazu bringt zu riechen, was für Pheromone die Angehörigen der anderen Geschlechter gerade aussenden, sprich sie erkennen so die Stimmung der anderen und Hinweise auf Hitze bzw. Brunft.
Omegas erleben sogenannten Hitzen (grob gesagt sie werden rollig bzw. läufig, sucht euch aus welches Tier ihr bevorzugt) und sondern in dieser Phase ihres Lebens Pheromone ab, die bei Alphas wiederum Brunftverhalten auslösen (ja, jetzt haben wir die Tierart gewechselt, sorry) – auf jeden Fall sind dann beide Seiten geil aufeinander und beschließen sich zu paaren und tun das dann auch über einen längeren Zeitraum hinweg – im Falle eines männlichen Alphas verhakt sich dieser meistens im Omega, und sie hängen dann längere Zeit zusammen (und jetzt sind wir wieder bei den Hunden gelandet) bis der Penis abschwillt und entfernt werden kann. Betas hingegen werden vom Geruch der Hitze abgestoßen damit sie nicht zwischen einen brünftigen Alpha und dem von ihm begehrten Omega geraten können, was mit unter schlecht für sie ausgehen könnte.

+ Polygamie gilt als normal, wenn auch überholt. Die ideale Beziehungsform wäre eine Triaden-Beziehung zwischen einem Alpha, einem Beta und einem Omega. Aber im 21. Jahrhundert kommen diese nur noch selten vor.
+ Homosexualität gilt als normal, was sekundäre Geschlechter angeht, und bei den meisten auch, was primäre Geschlechter angeht.
+ Es gibt sogenannte Gefährten, eine geistige wie körperliche Bindung zwischen Alpha und Omega, die einst als heilig galt, heutzutage aber als altmodisch angesehen wird und durch die normale zwei Personen-Ehe esetzt wurde.
+ Bei den außeriridschen Völkern haben die Alphas das Sagen.
+ Rudelstrukturen sind nicht mehr häufig zu finden, entstehen aber automatisch wenn größere Gruppen aller drei Geschlechter viel Zeit miteinander verbringen.
+Sogenannte Prime-Alphas, zu denen sich Eobard zählt, wurden in unserer Zeit noch nicht identifiziert, gelten in der Zukunft und auf anderen Planeten aber als Untergeschlecht vom Alpha und meinen eine intelligentere und stärkere Art von Alpha.
+Intersex-Geschlechter sind möglich und oft die Folge von künstlich herbeigeführten schiefgegangen Geschlechtsumwandlungen. Alpha-Beta etwas bedeutet, dass die Person mehr Alpha als Beta Merkmale besitzt, während Beta-Alphas mehr Beta- als Alpha-Merkmale aufweisen.

I 100% didn’t wanna go to dinner with Rhea, Danny, and everyone else.
I’ve had this sinking feeling in my stomach since I agreed to Rhea’s invitation, and that feeling has only grown since.
Something in Rhea’s demeanor made me feel like things could go south at the dinner real fuckin quick…
And again, I questioned things.
I couldn’t even begin to fathom why Rhea seemed a bit snarky when it came to Daniel, but it was beginning to get on my nerves.
In the last few days, I couldn’t bring Danny up without Rhea having some bullshit to say even though she claimed that we were cool.
Two seconds away from texting Rhea and coming with an excuse to cancel the whole thing, I saw my phone light up on my bedside table with a text from Corbs.
As of late, he’s been thoroughly enjoying the drama that has ensued.
Just by looking at him, I knew he was saying ‘’I told you so’’.
But I couldn’t think of that.
I couldn’t think that Rhea could even possibly feel the same way I did.
Why? I don’t know.
But the thought terrified me as much as it filled me with happiness.
It was a fuckin weird position to be in.
Sometimes I wished that I could fess up to Rhea, but something always held me back.
Laughing to myself, I did just that and sleep a little bit more soundly.
As much as we liked to bust each other’s balls, Corbs and I trusted each other with our lives and I knew that despite him acting like a gossiping ole lady, he always had my best interest at heart.
If shit hit the fan at this dinner, I’d deal with it.

As I got dressed earlier, I felt like I was in a bit of a haze.
I didn’t wanna overdo it since we weren’t going to a particularly fancy restaurant, so I settled for a Motionless in White muscle tee, some ripped jeans, lipstick, a cute purse and some cute heels.
I didn’t even think as I was getting dressed, but I wasn’t going to make that mistake again…
‘’Why are you so nervous? They’re not meeting you for the first time.’’ Danny chuckled and rubbed my thigh affectionately as he drove us to Applebees and my knee bounced anxiously up and down.
The closer we got to the restaurant; I felt a shred of that anxiety return.
This felt wrong.
Just wrong.
But I wanted things to work out with Danny.
I really did… I think?
No, I liked Danny.
And naturally, I wanted my friends to like him too.
‘’I’m not nervous! I’m just hungry.’’ I lied, sticking my tongue out playfully.
‘’Goin as fast as I can, babe.’’ Danny chuckled again as he spun the steering wheel smoothly and made a left. ‘’Are they there already?’’ He asked before I pulled my phone out from my purse to ask my friends just that.
My stomach flipped a little when I looked at my phone to see that Rhea and Corbs were already there.
The second we arrived, the fuckshit began…
As Rhea eyes scanned my body up and down, and I saw her eyes zero in on my slightly oversized tee, my stomach sank.
There was recognition in her eyes.
A realization that made me realize my silly mistake.
The smirk on her face was very much like the cat who was just about to eat the canary and I immediately put 2 and 2 together, but it was too late.
‘’Oh! I was wondering where that shirt went. Good to know its in safe its in safe hands,’’ she said and winked at me before she settled back into the booth and lazily sipped her drink.
I could feel my face heat up and Danny’s grip on my hand went a bit slack.
I gave it a squeeze, but I said nothing.
The shirt was just fuckin comfortable, okay?
Her comment was completely unnecessary.
‘Oh, shut up. You know you love wearing something of hers. You always have. It makes you feel… hers.’’ That pesky voice in the back of my head piped in for the 28248438th time in the last few months.
‘’We already ordered drinks since we got here a bit early.’’ Baron said to Danny and me after he introduced himself to fill the silence.
‘’Oh ok!’’ I replied and I awkwardly slid into the booth next to Danny and across from Rhea.
When the boys arrived, the agony continued.
‘’So, you guys met on the road?’’ Dom asked, looking between me and Danny who stood almost rim-rod straight in the booth.
The tension between him and Rhea could be cut with a chainsaw, and I wanted nothing more than to run out of there and go home and cuddle with a pint of chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream.
‘’We did. When you guys came to Missouri, Harper and I ran into each other at a bookstore. I was there shopping with my little sister. She actually recognized Harper,’’ Danny laughed, and I blushed.
Rhea’s eyes went to me before landing back on Danny.
‘’We got to talkin’ and here we are.’’ Danny smiled at me.
I gave him a small smile that I tried to mean, then I focused back on my food.
‘’Harper didn’t mention that. So modest.’’ Rhea said while Finn, Corbin and Dom sat back and pretty much watched this all unfold.
This was starting to feel like a trainwreck I couldn’t stop.
‘’Are you fan of pro wrestling?’’ Damian asked Danny.
His tone or demeanor weren’t unkind, but I could see him observing Danny closely.
Damian was as easygoing as he was observant, not much went past him.
‘’My little sister is more so than me. I haven’t watched any of the shows in a minute. Sorry!’’ Daniel cringed playfully, making everyone laugh softly.
Except Rhea, of course.
‘’Really? That’s odd… your Instagram says that you were at the last years’ Rumble. And the year after that… and the one after that too. Seems a bit much for not being a fan.’’ She said, raising a brow slightly as Daniel stammered before he recovered.
‘’Well like I said, my sister loves watching. And her birthday usually falls around that time. So, I took her to a couple Royal Rumbles,’’ he shrugged.
But Rhea wouldn’t let up and I had had enough.
‘’So why isn’t she in any of those pos-‘’ She started to go back in until I held a hand up.
‘’Rhea, can I talk to you for a sec?’’ I smiled politely, getting up with her and dumping my napkin onto the table.
Danny’s flustered reaction did raise some alarm bells, I’ll admit.
But I still thought that Rhea was outta order.
‘’What the hell’s your problem with Danny? Ever since you’ve known of his existence you’ve done nothing but act like a complete douche about him. What is wrong?’’ I asked, crossing my arms over my chest, and leaned against the wall of the hallway leading into the ladies’ bathroom.
‘’I don’t trust him.’’ Rhea shrugged and I scoffed.
‘’On what grounds? Because his little sister isn’t plastered on his Instagram? She’s a child, Rhea! Maybe her parents don’t want her face all over the internet. Ever thought of that?!’’ I exclaimed before I remembered we were in public, and I lowered my voice.
‘’He’s a gym bro, he’s been to a couple shows- and not just Rumbles- and he’s claiming that he doesn’t watch any of it? Gimme a break, Harper. You can’t be this dense…’’ Rhea said impatiently, shoving her hands into the pockets of her jeans.
I squinted at her, jolting back a bit.
‘’Are you implying… are you implying that Danny’s only with me to get a foot in the door in the business?’’ I asked, my jaw dropping a bit at her bluntness and a little bit hurt.
Seeing the hurt in my eyes, Rhea grabbed my hand.
Just that small touch felt like heaven despite how irritated I was, and I once again remembered where we were.
And more importantly, with whom.
‘’Babe, I’m only looking out for you. I’m not getting good vibes, that’s all… but if you want me to back off, I’ll back off.’’ She murmured.
I knew some part of her did mean well.
But she wasn’t going about it in the best way, and I wasn’t about to let that slide.
I’ve let too much slide from her as it is.
Though I’ll admit I felt like a giant hypocrite.
Deep down I knew that I was only defending Danny this hard because I wanted to keep living this bullshit lie.
But nobody had to know that.
‘’Good. No more snide shitty comments, no more incessant questions… just, no more. Okay?’’ I demanded.
Rhea nodded, agreeing to behave for the rest of the evening.
And she did.
Little did I know things were about to come to an explosive halt soon…

After the show, I made my way to Rhea's hotel room, and I knocked on the door twice.
As I waited for her to open the door, I kept psyching myself up.
''C'mon, Harper. You can do this. You don't even have to tell her the whole truth. Just tell her about Danny and it's over,'' I mumbled to myself.
Then I remembered that I had mentioned to him that I would try to talk to Rhea tonight.
Just as my phone buzzed again, Rhea’s hotel room door slowly opened, and I was greeted apathetically by her.
Even though I knew I deserved Rhea’s less-than-enthusiastic greeting, it still stung a bit.
It hurt to feel so… disconnected, especially knowing just how good and easy things were between us.
I tried my best to smile at her, hoping against all hope that things could go back to the way they were before all of this.
Before my feelings decided to completely fucking betray all logic.
I wanted to believe that her agreeing to even see me tonight meant that there was some hope that we could salvage our friend at the very least…
‘’Come in.’’ Rhea said, opening the door further and stepping to the side to let me into the room.
Once I stepped in, I didn’t know what to do with myself.
Any other night, this would be right about the time where Rhea’s hungry lips would meet mine and her touch would set my body ablaze until we were both satisfied.
Obviously, that’s not happening tonight.
While I gathered the right words to say to her, she busied herself with untangling her earphones that I knew she must’ve stuffed haphazardly into her bag before she left the arena.
‘’You said you wanted to talk?’’ Rhea said after a couple of seconds of awkward silence.
Feeling so much coldness coming from her made my chest burn once again.
Feeding off of her demeanor, a little voice in the back of my mind confirmed that, no.
Things wouldn’t go back to the way they were.
I’d blame that little voice for what I blurted out next.
‘’I have a boyfriend. His name’s Danny…’’ I said, trailing off as her eyes finally met mine again.
Despite how fast her eyes shot to my face, searching my features for only God knows what, she didn’t look shocked.
That same apathetic look stayed in her eyes for a moment longer before she let out a soft huff of laughter.
‘’Of course,’’ Rhea said.
I tilted my head slightly, frowning in confusion.
‘’I figured that was it… How’d you meet him?’’ she said, nodding toward the foot of her bed, urging me to sit as she crossed one leg underneath her.
It took me a second to respond and I felt a bit thrown off about her wanting to know anything about Danny.
I wasn’t sure what I was expecting from her, but this certainly wasn’t it.
‘You want her to care, dumbass.’ That tiny voice in the back of my head spoke up again but I quickly shut it down.
‘’At a bookstore, actually.’’ I chuckled a little awkwardly. ‘’He was there with his little sister, and we just started talking… he’s really sweet. I really like him.’’ I finished, softly clearing my throat, and looking at anything but Rhea’s now attentive gaze.
Even as I said the words, they felt wrong to my ears.
I rubbed the back of my neck as Rhea slowly nodded, keeping her eyes on me.
I was ready to fly out of this room.
I wanted out.
‘’…I’m happy for you, H. I just wish that you would’ve said something instead of just going all weird on me…’’
Once again, I felt suffocated and empty all at the same time.
‘It’s because you’re a fucking liar. Why are you doing this to your-‘
‘’Why don’t you bring him around? Maybe you, him, the boys and I can all go out to dinner on Sunday. Or brunch, maybe.’’ Rhea said suddenly.
‘’Huh?’’ I replied intelligently.
I was totally going to bring Danny around eventually, but I wasn’t planning on it happening this soon…
Rhea laughed at my saucer-shaped eyes, and she shrugged.
‘’Yeah! Why not? We’ll hang out, get to know each other. Besides, I wanna meet the man who stole you away from me,’’ She laughed again, but I couldn’t help but notice a slightly snarky edge in her tone.
‘You’re not imagining things, Harper… this is gonna go horribly. WAKE. UP. PENDEJA.’ That little voice tried to make me see reason once more.
But like the dumbass I am, I ignored it again.
‘’…Are we cool now?’’ I said instead, feeling my shoulders droop in relief as Rhea nodded.
‘’We’re cool. It’s not like you were cheating on me, H. It’s fine. You and I were just messing around, it was fun, and now it’s over. No worries.’’ She shrugged.
Ouch…
‘’… Alright. I’ll um- I’ll talk to Danny. See if he can meet up with all of us this Sunday.’’ I said, giving her a small smile.
‘’Great!’’ Rhea smiled…
