HIGNFY's Guest Webterview: Richard Madeley

Q1. You've worked in TV for many years, but how do you feel about hosting HIGNFY for the first time?

It's a long deferred ambition. I've not been able to do it before because we've been on air so much and the schedules collide. But it's TV heaven for me so I'm really looking forward to it. I know the team captains pretty well - I'm expecting them to rip it out of me and that's fine. It's going to be really good fun and it's the last in the series, so it'll have a kind of Christmas feel. I'm really looking forward to it.

Q2. In an ideal world, would you like to host HIGNFY jointly with Judy? How do you think you'll do without her?

I'm hoping to get by without the loyal presence of my wife. It's hard enough for everyone else to get a word in edgeways, but with a husband and wife sitting there, particularly us two, I think we'd crowd out the teams. She'd be very funny doing it herself, because Judy is wonderful at expressing disapproval if someone goes too far. She could certainly put Ian and Mr Merton in his place.

Q3. Your impression of Ali G was voted as the top TV moment from hell by a Channel 4 show. Are you planning to do any impressions this week?

No. The thing about the Ali G impression is we were actually quite proud of that sketch because Judy and I scripted it the day before and there were some good gags in it. And then it ends up - I think you're being kind - I think it was actually categorised as the worst television moment of all time. I was very proud of that. I went to bed trailing clouds of champagne. I saw it as an honour.

Q4. I've read that when you were trying to conceive you "doused your balls in icy cold water." Did it help?

What keen father-to-be hasn't done that? It works apparently. The reason that your balls are outside your body is because they've got to be a bit cooler to produce sperm. It's true. So the cooler they are, the more sperm they produce, up to a point. It's bloody agonising actually, spraying freezing cold water over your balls every morning. But it must have worked because Jack and Chloe came along.

Q5. What went through your mind when you realised Judy's wardrobe malfunction during the National Television Awards?

I had no idea that it was so dramatic, because like her, I was looking out at the audience and the blinding lights. The audience were clapping and cheering because we'd won and they'd just shown the Ali G clip. I thought they were asking me to do the Ali G impression but in fact they were roaring with laughter because Judy's dress had come down, exposing her fabulous bosoms.

Neither of us knew until John Leslie came running up to the stage. But even then I glanced down as he was doing it and thought "what the hell is he doing to my wife's boobs," and realised something had happened. My reaction was admiration for Judy, because to be in front of 12 million viewers and everyone in the Albert Hall and to have that happen is obviously every woman's nightmare, but she handled it really well. I was very impressed with her.

For All Creatures Great and Small fans, some great, big news: MASTERPIECE announced on Friday that the series based on James Herriot’s iconic collection of stories has been renewed for Seasons 5 and 6.

Each of the two seasons will consist of six episodes plus Christmas specials, airing Stateside here on PBS.

Also back for Season 5 are Nicholas Ralph as vet James Herriot, Samuel West as the mercurial Siegfried Farnon, Anna Madeley as the matriarch of Skeldale House Mrs. Hall, Rachel Shenton as the charismatic Helen Herriot, James Anthony-Rose as Richard Carmody, and Patricia Hodge as the wonderfully sophisticated Mrs Pumphrey (with her pampered Pekingese Tricki in tow, of course).

“It is such a joy to share the news of two more seasons of All Creatures Great and Small,” Susanne Simpson, executive producer for MASTERPIECE, said in a statement. “The MASTERPIECE audience has come to treasure this heart-warming series. We’re also particularly happy to welcome back Callum Woodhouse as Tristan to this incredible ensemble of actors.”

Adds Sir Colin Callender CBE, CEO of lead producer Playground: “Kindness and decency are increasingly rare qualities these days, so it is a blessing to be able to return to the sanctuary of Skeldale House and James Herriot’s beloved characters who represent all that is the best in us. There are no villains in All Creatures — just everyday folk trying to get through the day with dignity with the help of a supportive community, family and friends. It’s a lesson for modern times.”

Mick Lynch, General Secretary of the National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT) has been in the media all day talking about the rail strikes and god what a great spokesperson he has been for them.
