if anyone saw the faint handprints on the dark blue paint the next day, they didn’t dare to say anything

one habit that max had taken up, with your consent of course, was taking pictures during your risky encounters

he had a secret folder on his phone (password protected just in case) to look at when he was away and you were busy

his go to photos were the one of you on his race car, they were never not sexy

but he also had photos of you bent over his balcony, on the hood of his road car, his fingers inside you while you were at a private beach in St Tropez

the folder was virtually endless, but they definitely never got old

Lana’s Unreleased Songs in ‘Chronological’ Order

This is not based on Lana’s reality or intention, just the story she tells in her music. This does not include Ave Maria, Boom Like That, Roll With Me, Money Hunny or most of the EPs/demotapes

Younger Years

This is Lana’s teenage years, due to the mentions of school and her age. The story I gleaned from this was she was a wild girl at school, hanging around with the wrong crowd (Boarding School, Children of the Bad Revolution, Driving in Cars With Boys, Making Out, Motel 6, Butterflies Part 2). She always felt like an outcast and had dreams of being famous (Elvis (inspiration), Hollywood, Pin Up Galore, Playground, You’re Gonna Love Me, Jesus is My Boyfriend).

She meets a guy who is a little bit bad for her but she connects with despite the toxic nature of their relationship (Me and My Boyfriend, Run Motorcycle, I Don’t Wanna Go, I Learned How To Make Love From the Movies (another ‘black leather moonlight), Ridin’, Joshy and I, Stoplite De-Lite, Queen of Hearts).

However, they’re passionately into each other (Baby Blue Love, BBM Baby, Jealous Girl, Puppy Love) and she dreams of them running away together (On Our Way, Prom Song Gone Wrong, Super Movie, Take Me to Paris, 1949, Every Man Gets His Wish).

They go on to break-up after multiple ‘breaks’ (Butterflies Part 1), when Lana’s boyfriend decides he wants to hit the road himself (Your Band is All the Rage). Lana recognises they were too young and bad for each other, and just wanted to leave together (Afraid, Damn You).

Waitressing/Trailer Parks/Jim

Lana becomes a waitress and goes on to meet Jim (All Smiles, Caught You Boy, Meet Me in the Pale Moonlight, You Can Be the Boss), a rich, law-breaking unkind lover (Crooked Cop, Hundred Dollar Bill). Their relationship is passionate and loving (4th of July, Behind Closed Doors, Bellevue, Bentley, Betty Boop Boop, My Song 57, Coca Colla, Daddy Issues, Dynamite, Hawaiin Tropic, Heartshaped Chevrolet, I Was in a Bad Way, Let My Hair Down, Match Made in Heaven, Oooh Baby, Push Me Down, Put Your Lips Together, Queen of Disaster, Bikini Gold) but also difficult (Maha Maha, My Best Days, Put the Radio On, Resistance, Roses, Trees, Valley of the Dolls, Cult Leader (metaphor)).

Jim also had a darker influence on Lana and she admired his criminal ways (Hot Hot Hot, Never Let Me Go (Nancy and Sid)). They lived in a trailer park together (Backfire, Fordham Road, Television Heaven, Trash Magic) and slowly they fell more into crime.

They started a lifestyle of criminal activity (Criminals Run the World, Come When You Call Me America (”gun to gun”), Daytona Meth, Hit and Run, Live or Die, Playing Dangerous (arson), Scarface) and Lana developed a darker persona (Dangerous Girl, Hangin’ Around, Serene Queen, Summer of Sam). Jim soon goes to prison (Gangsta Boy, TV in Black and White). Lana eventually realises that Jim’s love for her is too flawed, and she metaphorically kills his influence on her (Kinda Outta Luck).

Getting Famous/Stripping

Lana becomes a stripper and seeks to get noticed. She spends her days at the diner and her nights at the club (Us Against the World, Dance For Money, Ghetto Baby (stilettos, loose link), Go Go Dancer, Midnite Dancer Girlfriend, Moie Je Joue, Party Girl).

Lana eventually starts to get noticed for this (C U L8r Alligator, Disco) as well as her singing (Marilyn). Though she does still miss the life she had with Jim (Methamphetamines), she meets interesting new people (Strangelove, Big Bad Wolf, Wolf T-Shirt) and people who can give her a chance in the business (Axl Rose Husband (”record executive), Ben) - including famous men she admires (Is It Wrong?), accidentally becoming known in a scandal (Other Woman, True Love On the Side).

Famous

Lana’s fame grows quickly, and she is known as the wild-child star (Be My Daddy, Breaking My Heart, Heavy Hitter, Dreamgirl, Dum Dum, Paradise, Serial Killer, So Legit, St Tropez). She starts up a PR relationship (Fake Diamond) but meets another singer like her, who slows down her crazy behaviour (Because of You). They are a perfect pair, both rich, talented and about the famous lifestyle (Beautiful Player, Delicious, Back to tha Basics). He lives too fast, too dangerously (Live Forever, Velvet Crowbar, Lift Your Eyes) but she sticks by him. They have a whirlwind engagement to be married.

She is heartbroken when she hears rumours about him (In The Sun, Catch and Release (”page three”, gossip)). She is devastated and angered by the revelations of his unfaithfulness (Hollywood’s Dead, Noir, She’s Not Me, Tired of Singing the Blues, Your Girl) but ultimately is strong (Break My Fall). Most of all, she’s heartbroken about the marriage that would never be (Fine China*).

Lana sees the downfall of fame steadily (Last Girl on Earth) and as she becomes introspective (On & On & On) misses her past (I Talk to Jesus, Greenwich, Wayamaya, You and Me).

She spends time alone, finding herself and her freedom (Angels Forever Forever Angels, Wild One) but soon meets someone new (Hey You). She falls in love (JFK) despite remembering the past with Jim and her other lovers (French Restaurant). She is mature and safe in her relationship, and allows it to unfold (Life is Beautiful, Spin Me Round, Starry Eyed, Unidentified Flying Bill, When I’m With You, Yes to Heaven).

*This song could have fit in to various places.

This was just for fun and was all theoretical; again, I’m not claiming any of this is Lana’s intention but just a fictional narrative based on the beautiful stories she tells

Beautiful Côte d’Azur

We’ve been walking in the footsteps of the world’s top celebrities on the Côte d’Azur. Our trip along the French Riviera has taken us to Cannes - famous for its international film festival - and Antibes and St Tropez - home of 60’s film star, Bridgette Bardot among many other A list celebrities.

At each of these towns, the harbours are jam packed with the most luxurious yachts, travelling from London, New York and across Europe to visit. Luxury villas can be rented here with staring prices of 27,000 Euros a week, rising to eye-watering sums for the most unique.

But that’s OK. We don’t need a luxury pad. We’re quite at home in Big Boy and we were just happy to find out more about what makes these towns so special.

Cannes’ connection with the stars can be seen everywhere, not least in the street art which can be found across the town. Huge murals of Marilyn Monroe, French actors and comedians and a detailed painting which included Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, Laurel and Hardy, Batman and Robin and the Star Wars’ robots among others are painted on the buildings.

We loved Cannes’ old town and harbour front. During our stay, we celebrated our 36th wedding anniversary, eating fabulously fresh seafood at one of the quay restaurants in one of our most favourite parts of Europe.

A quick train ride took us to Antibes, a really charming place with its old town enclosed with ramparts. The Nomad of Antibes - an unusual sculpture designed by a Spanish artist of a man looking out to sea - sits on part of the ramparts adjoining the port. The statue was created as part of a temporary exhibition but is now owned by the city and the Picasso Museum, so now it belongs to Antibes.

At both Cannes and Antibes, the daily fruit and flower markets are really special. Here you can buy a huge variety of fruit and vegetables, spices, olives, fish, meat and the most beautiful bouquets. We love a good market and bought plenty of fresh fruit.

After saying goodbye to Cannes, we headed along the coast road to the Gulf of St Tropez and dropped into the town for a quick visit.

St Tropez started life as a fishing village and it still has a fish market decorated with elaborate tiles marking its past. It also has a long connection with artists and, even though we had lost the sun and it was threatening rain, they were still out in force on the quayside.

But St Tropez as you can imagine, is extremely expensive. You’ll pay 10 Euros for a tea or coffee just to be sitting at the quayside. Our budget doesn’t stretch to such luxury, so we headed off on the next part of our trip.

Now we are staying just outside Montpelier and looking forward to exploring the city. The clouds have moved in and there’s not much sun, but it’s still warm and better than the U.K. weather. So we’re not complaining.

What kind of trips does modern!Aemond like taking with reader and then also Amaelia?

Ahhhh such a good question!! I’m probably gonna miss a lot of places because I’m so fried from work but!

With the reader, he’d love to take his partner if he has to do studio visits with artists and he has to fly out to them. Maybe he flies to Toronto, New York, Chicago, London…what have you…quick little trips to the artists studios or galleries, and he likes to make the most of the trip by staying all week or weekend with the reader. I’ve decided that the reader in this au is a filmmaker of producer! So the same goes for Aemond. If the reader has to be on location, if it can be arranged and Aemond can move a few work things up to go, them they go together! Also if there’s a fancy art fair or biennial and Aemond’s going, he takes the reader.

Also this is self-indulgent to the max and a little silly 😅 but Beyoncé has a lyric that goes, ‘she more Cancun, he more St. Tropez’ and I’ve said it before but that always gives me Aemond and reader vibes 🤣 (mostly because I so would suggest Cancun for a vacation to a beach destination, also because it’s in my country. And if you’re doing that kind of sea/beach destination, Aemond would go for something more classic).

With Amaelia: aaaah definitely the Zoo is a must!! As well as the beach! I feel like Amaelia would be a big fan of road trips, so maybe Aemond would take her out to visit a National Park somewhere, or a lake. Any cool destination that they can drive to is great for Amaelia, who’s a little bit weary of planes when she’s really little, and has the most fun starring out the window to see the landscape while singing songs or playing games with Aemond and the reader. I feel like she’d also be very excited about taking a train somewhere!

When will I learn? 

My post-high school grad existential crisis was in full swing in the fall of 2021. After arguably one of the best summers of my life, I found myself conflicted. My friend group broke into a civil war over the prettiest of things. The girl I fancied no longer found my fear of making the first move charming. Oh, and God? Well, let's just say we aren't on speaking terms.

November 2021 rolled around and so did my trip abroad. Months earlier, a dear friend of mine invited me to see him run a marathon in Istanbul. To make our trip worthwhile, we added Egypt to the itinerary and invited other friends. Istanbul was amazing; I could literally write a book on how much I love that city. My trip to Egypt on the other hand was much more... thought-provoking. The sight of extreme poverty combined with my already ongoing existential crisis made me question everything. Whatever little clarity I had, was completely wiped away on this leg of my trip. Only the music buzzing through my AirPods could preserve any sense of sanity.

The set kicks off with “On the Sea” by Beach House. The slow fade-in of the piano is almost soothing. But the lyrics quickly turn the mood somber.

“Out on the sea, we’d be forgiven

Our bodies stopped the spirit leavin’”

As I flew over the Mediterranean I thought about how easy it’d be to leave it all behind. Maybe if I never went back home I could just forget all my anxieties. Live free.

Just like J. Cole expresses the difficulty of leaving behind his anxiety in “St. Tropez”, I too couldn’t abandon mine by traveling across the globe. They were embedded in my psyche.

I discovered Spelling through Anthony Fantano, unfortunately. Nevertheless, “Turning wheel” is a great tune. That song along with “Finally Alone” by Mac DeMarco embodied what I felt when I stepped out of the Cairo International Airport for the first time.  A sense of optimism rushed through me. I was ready to shed my boring suburban life and immerse myself in a setting entirely out of my element.

“Cien Años” by Pedro Infante is a love song, the only one on the set. We ended our first night on a boat, floating along the Nile River, eating Koshary. I was feeling romantic, oddly enough. I reminisced on the women in my life. Something that would typically torment me, ended up evoking a sense of happiness. I felt grateful to have had them in my life.

The set takes on a more melancholic tone with “Crown” by Kendrick Lamar and “Weight of the World” by Jordana. Our road trip to Alexandria was mostly made up of me reflecting. As I sat in the van for hours I pondered on the meaning of life. What is there to do about all this suffering? I felt powerless. I wanted to pray, but like I said, me and the big guy aren’t on speaking terms.

The next two songs on this set are sort of juxtaposing in a way. “How Great” by Chance the Rapper shows the side of me that wanted close my eyes, cross my fingers, and hope that God will solve all my problems. Marvin Gaye’s “Mercy Mercy Me” shows the side of me that was forced to recognize the problems in the world for what they were. We can tackle them head-on, and make tangible decisions. But hope alone won’t be enough.

My last day in Egypt was spent Jeep-ing through the desert of Faiyum. I don’t know if the other group members could tell that I was mainly in a dissociative state that day. I stared at the slightly yellow-tinted sands and thought nothing. It was scary and yet kinda nice to have no critical thoughts. I almost felt like I was one with the desert.

I discovered Willie Nelson when I was in middle school and have been a fan ever since. “A Wonderful Yesterday” nicely reflects the feeling I felt at the Cairo International airport on the way back home. Despite hitting my lowest point mentally while in Egypt, I felt a sense of gratitude for the experience. It’s odd really.

Current Joys has gotten me through some tough times. In "Home (Pt. 1 & 2)" Nick Rattigan sings of him being lost in the world. Reality began to sink back in as I sat in the car on the way home from the airport. I wasn't sure where to go from there. What even is the next step after an experience like that?

When I got home I threw off my backpack and free-fell onto my bed. My cat followed behind, curling up into a ball on my chest. Suddenly, I felt a wave of relief through my body. Maybe this is all I ever needed.

I think really skinny older women look haggard in the sun. Have you seen close ups of Victoria Beckham recently. She too is in St Tropez. Her skin looks old and wrinkley and those lips of hers look bad. Even close ups of her arm pits and around her knees and elbows are all wrinkled up like prunes

That hag has looked like a corpse since the 90s! 👹

From Mountains to the Mediterranean

We were the only ones on the ferry from Varenna to Bellagio across Lake Como but still had to wear N95 masks for the 15 minute crossing. Then tracked along the lake to Lecco to get to the Autostrada and did not stop until we hit the Mediterranean at Cap d”Antibes 250 miles later.  

What a relief. Cool spot for cocktails, dinner, and swimming and breakfast the next morning off Plage de la Garoupe. Following day a quick haul over Col de Vence; a 3,000 foot elevation crossing into hundreds of miles of the coolest, almost deserted motorbike roads through rugged limestone valleys and small villages with delicious and almost unpronounceable  names like Greolieres and Saint-Villiers-de-Thiey or Escragnolles. 

All the hills in France are signposted for cyclists who all aspire to emulate their Tour de France heroes. The signs on the Col de Vence, show the elevation of the summit and the work required to get there. 

Finally, on to St. Tropez where the people watching is top-notch and the beer prices at Senequier are appropriately inaccessible. This week the Yacht Club de France is hosting their Italian counterparts for a friendly set of races between here, San Remo, and Corsica called the Rolex Giraglia. The boats in the harbour were eye wateringly beautiful with unimaginable price tags. 

Chris was eyeing the harbor for a berth for his soon-to-be-acquired catamaran.
