my favorite things abt Rotjaw:
a) we now have reasons to go to parts of the maps we never did before, like corners and edges of the map that never had clues or lairs.
b) rolling up on her lair without realizing until you see her massive rotting body slip into the water and the incredibly primal gut fear of "THERES SOMETHING IN THE WATER" hits very good
my least favorite thing abt Rotjaw:
that fucking 125 damage charge attack

I'd like to play dnd again. I don't much like being the DM, but I suppose I could try a one shot.
"Florid fishmen feeling frisky on Fate's Altar leads to break in trade routes on vacation island, Mayor of Hasn't-Flooded-Yet issues travel advisory.
Danny Rotjaw, Mayor of Hasn't-Flooded-Yet (a rather ruddy-cheeked alcoholic dwarf who hates being above ground and was voted into office by spite) says that anyone, quote, "Stupid enough to go through Femurfuck Swamp deserves what they get."
The temple of Fate within the Femurfuck Swamp on the Island of Hasn't-Flooded-Yet is currently chock-full of angry fishmen, all of whom invested in Fishcoin, the new currency designed to destroy the economy of Hasn't-Flooded-Yet, and all of whom are flat broke because of it.
Ways to resolve the issue (passerby being eaten by hungry fishmen): kill the fishmen, kill everyone else on Hasn't-Flooded-Yet, negotiate with the fishmen, convince the fishmen to go through with a socialist revolution, teach the fishmen metallurgy and recast their Fishcoins into usable currency, found the state of Is-Mostly-Water, and other solutions."
On second thought, maybe I shouldn't go playing dnd. Too silly, too silly by far.

Apprentices
Stripepaw - gray tabby tom Puddlepaw - black tom with many white spots
Elder
Asternewt - golden and white cats with orange spots
He stares at his paws and not for the first time, wishes that he hadn’t gotten this far.
“Did you hear me?!” Sharpjaw snaps at him, lashing her tail and getting into his space. Her long white teeth, for which she was named, were barely a tail-length away from his face. He couldn’t help but wonder just how much it could possibly hurt for her to bear down on his neck and crush his throat.
Then he rudely remembers that he has eight more lives to live and that wouldn’t be the end. Just because Maggotpaw got to die in his sleep that didn’t mean that he would get the same simple death, even if he was just as pathetic as his brother.
“I heard you.” Toadstar mutters, “Oh could I not hear the cat that forced their way into my den to tell me something that my deputies told me already?” Sharpjaw, of corse, doesn’t look the least bit repentant. Toadstar can’t quite blame her for that, though he can blame her for bothering him when he does not want to be bothered.
“Do something about it.” Sharpjaw snaps. Toadstar bares his teeth at her, preparing to snap out the cruelest thing he could think of because Sharpjaw whirled around and stalked out of his den. He hopes the grasses are tough against her spotted fur.
If he were a worse cat, then he would drag her back to his den for daring to be so rude to him.
If he were a worse cat, then no cat would dare be rude to him. He also wouldn’t stop his kin from getting their apprentices killed.
Though he was a bad enough cat to give them both a second chance, so does that make him much better than Fawnstar?
…Toadstar sticks his head out of his neck and looks up at the sky. The sun has retreated from the sky, leaving the sky a dusty dark blue. The stars haven’t appeared yet, but they will have by the time that he’s done today.
If he were a good leader, then his only reservation about doing this would be not getting enough sleep. But he is not a good leader.
Mousepaw catches his eye. The tiny apprentice is chewing on a fish bigger than he is. He smiles at Toadstar. He returns it, because of course you do.
He was not a good warrior—he wailed too much and was too squeamish in the face of battles. He could cause harm but hated seeing cats harmed. He ate more than he hunted because there were stretches of nearly moons at a time where he wouldn’t hunt at all. His bed would often grow ragged and old because he was on it too often for the apprentices to change it.
He was not a good apprentice—he was always slow to learn, fast to forget. His paws were clumsy for too long, he was always unable to wash himself properly and would end up with mud on him for so long that he would smell. So he would sleep outside and earned what he deserved. He was the worst out of all of them—
and yet he’s still here.
Toadstar isn’t a good leader, but when an apprentice smiles at him he’ll smile at them back because he cannot let anyone know how awful he is. A clan cannot survive with a leader that doesn’t pretend to believe in himself.
He flicks his ear at Mousepaw, before fully leaving the den.
Toadstar lets a yowl build up in his throat for a moment, before expelling it in a breath, “All cats old enough to catch your own prey, gather under the HighWillow for a Clan meeting!” The camp, nearly full after a long day, seems to let out a low groan. He cannot blame them, he doesn’t want to make this night even longer.
Puddlepaw and Stripepaw had been too young to get popular with a lot of the Clan, but Puddlepaw had been well liked enough that he had heard murmurs of the apprentices agreeing to join on his vigil. He had even heard one of them say that even if it was cold, then they would just pile on top of him to keep warm.
Toadstar had never had a leader that stayed around for vigils. Petalstar, so long ago now, didn’t bother with it—but Toadstar couldn’t blame him for it because he would have been up more nights than not during the Rot outbreak. Heronstar and Fawnstar just…did not care.
The only vigil he could remember Fawnstar attending was for Heronstar. If Heronstar had gone to a vigil anytime during his short reign, then Toadstar did not remember.
(He had a lingering thought, one that said that he didn’t go to many vigils either. Toadstar pushes the thought down. He went to vigils, if he could. If the idea of leaving his nest didn’t make his head spin with the weight of his own disappointment.
He’s not thinking of being incapable as a warrior, he’s thinking of being an uncaring one.)
The thought of the apprentices knowing that he would be at the vigil without being asked? Gut-wrenching, to say the least.
Starlingblossom presses her body against his, a comforting press to the side that pulls him back to his paws. Toadstar presses his muzzle to her head for a second, before peeling away from the medicine cat and hurrying up onto the HighWillow. His claws dig into the soft bark, laying over marks that have scarred the old tree over and over again.
Toadstar looks over the Clan as they slowly collect in a group beneath him. A few knowing, most of them confused. Although, the amount of confused cats are dwindling as the ones they believe themselves to know what’s going on inform the confused ones. The story obviously isn’t a pretty one, there are many surprised hisses and suddenly turned back ears. Asternewt even jumps and yowls like someone had taken a swing at her. (Toadstar barely represses a smile at this.)
He waits until he cannot tell if any cat is missing.
“Today, we lost two young cats far before it was their time to go.” The words don’t come easier because he rehearsed them, “Stripepaw and Puddlepaw still had so much of their lives ahead of them, it is a great shame that they had it taken away from them in such a quick moment. I’m sure that if they had lived longer, then they would have made us just as happy to have them as fellow warriors—even more happy than we were to have them as our beloved apprentices.”
That second part wasn’t that good, it only applied to the warriors and not the apprentices that had lost their good friends. However, it was the best that he had.
“It was preventable!” Yowls Stemfall, so anger that she’s shaking. Toadstar is sure that if she had tried to come to him the same way that Sharpjaw had, there would be a lot less of him on the HighWillow and a lot more of him in StarClan, “They shouldn’t have been anywhere near the rivers today!”
“Why were they anywhere near the rivers so close to a flood.” Nightdawn joins into, parental rage alongside Stemfall’s. Toadstar tries to silence Spoteye and Sharpjaw with a sharp look but that doesn’t even begin to work.
Toadstar is torn between cutting them off and letting them scream themselves hoarse but before either he, his deputies, or even Starlingblossom can make that choice, Shadowtail has to open his big mouth.
“Have you considered that they should have been able to handle it? They were nearly full warriors—what are we supposed to hold their paws and make sure they cross every stream?” He says confidently, with his big puffed out chest and fake expression of smugness that shatters completely when he glances up at the HighWillow and catches Toadstar’s expression.
He hadn’t realized that he was showing anything other than cool disappointment when other cats begin looking at him, horror spreading across their faces.
“You—”
“I—”
“Shadowtail—”
Toadstar takes a deep breath and becomes aware of the wood crackling between his paws. He loosens his grip on the branch before he can get splinters that he would need to beg Starlingblossom to take out. She wouldn’t call him a fool, yet he would feel like one.
Toadstar starts again, for the fourth time.
“Did you consider that no matter what you thought your level of responsibility was—whatever you wrongly thought was your level of responsibility was for cats who had been kits five moons ago—you were told to stay away from the deeper rivers because they flooded not even a half moon ago!”
He takes a deep breath.
He had been shaking.
“Explain to me what happened. I want an explain now from the both of you.”
His gaze flickers over to Poppymist, who seems to understand the weight of this situation much better than her mate.
“We wanted to train them on hunting tactics.” Poppymist says first, raising her head so she looks Toadstar in the eye. It’s something that she does, looking someone directly in the eye when she’s trying to make a point. She stands there, unmoving, like that will pull her out of the hole she’s been trapped in, “And there was only so much that we could do only in theory.”
“Then why—”
Toadstar is able to silence Spoteye with a look this time.
“This does not explain how they died or why you weren’t the first cats to find them.” Toadstar says. He was going to continue on about everything that he had been informed of, such as why on earth Sedgewatcher had seen them quite far away before going on to discover the apprentices’ bodies, or why the both had them had come back to camp without their apprentices, or just their general lack of diligence that led to this being the fifth cat in their care that had died before they had gotten their warrior name.
But he just doesn’t have enough patience for it.
“Shadowtail and Poppymist. For your repeated failures to prove yourself as worthwhile members of this Clan, you are thus removed from it. I am invoking code nine on both of you. Get out of my Clan. Immediately.”
Don’t argue. Please don’t argue.
“You can’t do that!” Shadowtail snaps, tail lashing, “We’ve hunted all of our lives! We gave the Clan a child! It’s not my fault that she wanted to hunt something else.”
“Of course I wanted to hunt. They weren’t going to catch enough all by themselves.” Poppymist snaps backs, “Besides, it wasn’t that rough! How were we supposed to know that they would drown! It wasn’t that rough! I was dealing with rougher waters when I was younger!” She turns to Toadstar, “This is unfair!”
“What do you mean unfair!” Spoteye yowls, “My son is dead and it is your fault.”
“I’ve earned my place in this Clan hundreds of times over!” Snaps back Poppymist, one of their best fighters and hunters, who never flinches in the face of battle, who never sought power or tried to undermine him. The same Poppymist that had pushed to get her son’s name changed. The same Poppymist that continued to call her son her daughter.
“And have I!” Says Shadowtail.
“You cannot exile us because of code nine, because we provide more worth than just a single cat!” Poppymist snaps, “And to get rid of us would be putting the opinions of just four cats above that of the Clan!”
“You’ve forgotten code one.” Interjects another voice coldly, pushing herself to the front of the group to stand beside her daughter and son, “‘The word of the leader is the code.’”
“You’ve forgotten that the code can be debated. Which is what I’m doing. Besides, I will listen to his words over your own, Festerflesh.”
Festerflesh glares at her, but remains silent. Her gaze moves upwards to Toadstar after a few moments.
He turns away.
“You have both proven yourself to be unworthy members of this Clan.” Toadstar repeats firmly, hoping that neither of them can sense his wavering resolve. He doesn’t want them here, but he doesn’t do all the work to make them leave. They don’t understand the severity in what they did, they don’t understand that nothing could ever make up for the cats dead at their feet. They don’t understand and Toadstar isn’t willing to put in the work to make them understand.
“Leave.” Toadstar says firmly, and then as cats begin speaking, “Silence!”
“...Fine!” Shadowtail snaps, turning on his heel, “If you don’t want us we’ll go somewhere we’re wanted.” He pushes his way back through the throng of cats, not with any grace nor ease because cats keep on blocking his path. At one point someone shoves him hard enough to make him fall to the ground. It’s only then the black cat notices that he’s been walking alone.
“What? Think they’re gonna keep you?”
“Seeing as losing me would be more of a loss than losing you I’d think so.” Poppymist snaps back at her mate, still looking up at Toadstar. He had dropped their eye contact a while ago, deeming it not important enough to continue. He doesn’t try to reinitiate it, instead keeping his eyes on Shadowtail in case he tries to lash out.
Shadowtail snorts as he struggles to get back on his feet. Several cats hiss at him and someone hits his flank hard enough to make him fall back down.
“Toadstar. I plead to you to remember all that I have done for MarshClan. For every moment of my life, since the start of my apprenticeship, I have dedicated my entire life to making MarshClan as strong as possible. Have I not fought side by side with you before? Have I not fed you with my own paws? Have I not made sure that your every wish and desire has been met?”
Toadstar forces his expression into neutrality. Even begging for her life, Poppymist would still find a way to slide him an insult or two.
“It is not a warrior’s duty to fulfill their leaders wishes and desires.” Toadstar reminds her.
“Yes, but I have.” Poppymist points out, “I have done everything any leader could have wanted and more. I apologize for my mistake, I should have been watching Puddlepaw more carefully. I know that I will never be allowed another apprentice and I know that I deserve not being able to become deputy because of it. I know that I will have to apologize to Stemfall and Sharpjaw for giving their son such an awful death. I will do so, and I will also spend the rest of my life making up for my mistake so that I can face Puddlepaw in StarClan.
“Please Toadstar, please see me as a worthy member of this Clan and understand that I deserve to be here just as much as any other cat.”
“You always deserved to be here.” Says Festerflesh brusquely, “But you punished cats around you because you believed that it wasn’t so.”
“Can I be blamed for believing such a thing, with a mother such as yourself?” Poppymist says quickly, eyes still on Toadstar without a single glare to her mother as she reeled away from her daughter, “Can I be blamed for believing that I needed to earn my place when I have such an awful legacy as my history?”
“It was never your history.” A cat pipes up from the crowd.
“That doesn’t mean she had to take it out on us!” Another cat snaps back. Frogheart and Fernpool quickly get to work quieting the crowd that is quickly growing louder with every passing moment, allowing Toadstar to look down at Poppymist. Her eyes are watering, Toadstar doesn’t know just how much of her apology meant something, but he is confident that if he told her that she would be allowed to stay in the Clan if she walked into an inferno, she would.
(His sister, burned and scarred, blisters bubbling all over her skin, fluid coming out of what used to be her eye—oh StarClan why did he think of an inferno?)
He’s not going to think of infernos.
“Poppymist, you may say whatever you wish but you are no longer considered a part of MarshClan. Your loyalty was appreciated, but it has harmed this Clan. You will leave.” Toadstar says firmly.
“I—”
“He said that you will leave.” Festerflesh says. Poppymist’s calm facade shatters and she crouches, ready to attack her mother. Festerflesh just gives her a look from the corner of her eye, “Attack me if you wish. It will not change anything. I tried to change this, did I not? I’ve told you, time and time again, that you don’t need to work the cats around you so hard, didn’t I? I told you, over and over again, that you didn’t need to fight to be worthy of your place in the Clan, didn’t I?
“I told you, over and over again, that just because you had me as a mother didn’t mean that you were seen as lowly as me. Didn’t I?” Festerflesh asks, fur slowly raising until it was all standing out, “I told you, over and over that you were going to get somebody hurt! And then you did! And then you still didn’t listen to me—
“You’re not defending me—”
“Do you know how much I want to!” Festerflesh screams over her daughter, now crouching too, “Do you understand how much I want to beg Toadstar to believe that this was all just a lapse of attention, a moment of bad judgment, just a second where you blinked and bad things happened! Don’t you know how badly I want to look at you and have someone defend you! Defend you like—Nevermind!
“Nevermind all of that.” Festerflesh turns her head away from her daughter, “This is the end of a long line of behavior.” She lets out a derisive laugh, “This isn’t even the first apprentice that has died on your watch. Your son doesn’t talk to anymore, I can see him in the warriors den, sitting in his nest and doing his best to ignore you. He was Softkit, until he wasn’t because he grew and became difficult as all cats do as they grow up.
“I love you, with everything that I have. If StarClan told me that there was a way to stop this, I would take that option without question. I wouldn’t even think twice.” Festerflesh says to her daughter, whose gaze has turned from rageful to full of horror, “But I wasn’t. And there isn’t. Not anymore.
“Code nine has been invoked. You must leave.” Festerflesh says to her daughter and that is all of the conversation that the Clan hears because they quieted down just in time.
“Toadstar—” Poppymist pleads.
“Leave.” Toadstar says firmly, holding back his own misgivings.
“I—”
“Go.”
And finally, Poppymist turns away from him and slowly pads out of camp. Shadowtail has already gone, either to LaurelClan or BroadleafClan. LaurelClan because the opportunity to prove himself worthy by fighting them in the next battle was just too good to give up. BroadleafClan because they have enough pride for a cat like him and not ThinleafClan because they have less structure than he would like.
“This Clan meeting has ended. You are free to continue this day however you wish.” Toadstar says, but he’s not the only cat that doesn’t leave from their spot until Poppymist made it to the barrier.
She looks back.
No one tells her to stay.
-
The vigil went as expected, with many cats who weren’t close to the two apprentices choosing to go to sleep. Frogheart voiced some concerns with him with being unable to stay up for the vigil in favor of being able to wake up early and send out of the patrols. Toadstar didn’t know what to tell him other than he was a deputy, and it was his duty to be able to send out patrols.
Toadstar gave him the option to leave it all to Fernpool, but of course Frogheart didn’t do that.
Though he didn’t expect to wake up this early, or even to this voice.
“...I thought you said that you wanted to speak to me.” Festerflesh says plainly, “Fernpool told me to visit as soon as I was able.”
Toadstar rubs his eyes, “I expected that to be later than this, weren’t you also at the vigil?”
“Not for long.” Festerflesh says curtly.
Toadstar lets out a long yawn. He knows that it wouldn’t be received well by the other cat, but he needs to yawn. From the light coming through behind Festerflesh it seemed as if it was still before noonhigh. Far earlier than he expected to be awake.
“Come in, come in.” Toadstar says between yawns, before shaking his head back and forth, “You’re earlier than I expected, so I apologize for any times I may misstep or talk out of turn.”
“Hm.” Festerflesh murmurs, making it even more obvious that even if she understood the reasons that led to him exiling her child, she didn’t like him for it.
Well, that was part of why she was here right now. Better to nip his in the bud, before it warped into hate and Festerflesh began planning his murder. He didn’t quite feel like dying right about now. And he didn’t think she would make it fast.
“I am proposing the idea that you and Rotjaw would regain your warrior names. Effective immediately the two of you would regain the names you had when you were first named as warriors.”
Festerflesh stands there and stares at him. Her eyes grow wider and wider with every passing second.
“You would. What?”
“You and Rotjaw would regain the names you were first given, those being…?”
“Thornblaze. Thornblaze and Sandback. Those used to be our names—are. Are our names.”
“And they will be again.” Toadstar says with a soft smile, “Just say the word and I will do it.”
Festerflesh—Thornblaze looks at him for several seconds longer and Toadstar lets satisfaction roll over him. There was one more problem fixed.
“Truly, the names your names were unwieldy.” Toadstar begins, trying to ease her into the idea more, “I mean, Crowfood kept on believing that we were talking to her whenever we mentioned actual crowfood…” He trails off. Thornblaze’s expression had fallen upon the mention of her sister.
She bows her head.
“Thank you, for the opportunity, Toadstar.” Thornblaze tells him, “And you should ask Rotjaw the same question but for me, I can’t take your offer.” Festerflesh gives him a wry smile, “After all, just because I was the start of all of our problems that doesn’t mean that I can be the one to ask to end it all.”
“...And since Rotjaw never got the chance to be asked?” Toadstar asks.
Festerflesh shakes her head, that wry smile still on her face, “I’ll just live on like this. No more kits, obvious.” A dry laugh, “Four kits and only two of them are still in the Clans and one of them hates me. Great luck with children.”
“It’s not…all because of your legacy.” Toadstar dares to say.
Festerflesh sighs and sits down, “Enough of it is. One moment of my life has defined it all. I cannot tell if that moment is that night at the Gathering, or being born his sister.” Bitterness seeps into her tone, acid dripping from between her teeth, “They were my children, and I failed them all in different ways.”
“You can’t blame yourself for everything…”
“I don’t!” Festerflesh snaps, “Toadstar, do you really think that I could place the entirety of four lives on my own shoulders? StarClan knows that my own mother didn’t! It would destroy Asternewt to have to accept the crimes and misdoings of other cats as her own, wouldn’t it?! StarClan forbid that she stick her pelt out for someone!”
“Festerflesh, I—”
“Don’t.” Festerflesh lowers her head for a few moments before raising it. Her rage is simmering now, instead of boiling over like it was a second ago, “Sorry, it’s just annoying sometimes. She had been deputy. On that night, every cat on the SkyGrowth was a cat she had raised. I was born with two sisters, raised with three brothers and a single sister, yet when I needed someone the most, my brothers turned against me, my sister couldn’t protect me and my mother didn’t even try.”
Festerflesh shakes her head slowly, “It’s just bugs me sometimes. A lot. Always.”
“Festerflesh, I’m sorry.” Toadstar tells her, “I should have done something to stop it, I was there as well.”
“Oh, and have the young warrior torn apart by Fawnstar for daring to go against him?” Festerflesh teases, “You were just as scared as Fawnstar as I was.”
“Don’t tell me that it was that obvious.” Toadstar says with a wince, thinking of Fawnstar’s bright yellow eyes, the way that he wouldn’t hurry to clean the blood of his pelt and would leave bloody trails around camp. The harsh way he spoke, the harsher way in which he ruled.
“A bit. But everyone was scared of him, especially the people who wanted to be in his good favor. When my children used to confide in me, they would tell me about times they had accidentally stepped on his path and trod on his tail or accidentally scared off his catch or something of that nature. They would beg me to try and smooth things over.”
“Ah, that explains your constant visits to the leader’s den.”
“I needed to at least try for them. Even if Fawnstar would just give me a bored look and toss me out in a second.” She chuckles, “There was one time when I strolled in and before I could even get a word Fawnstar told me that he didn’t know what I was going to say, but he knew that he didn’t want to hear it.”
“That’s—” Much nicer than he would ever be to me, “—good.”
Festerflesh flicks her ear, “Well I’ve got it better now, so I can freely complain about all the bad times~”
A head pokes in behind Festerflesh, Starlingblossom’s. She gives Festerflesh a questioning look, and mouths something that takes Toadstar just long enough to make out that Festerflesh notices that there’s someone behind her.
“If you’re asking, no I’m not changing my name back. Thank you for the offer, truly, but I could never leave her behind.”

Battling Rotjaw, the Wild Target Rotjaw, a distinctive female alligator, is a unique Boss Target found in open water territories. Defeating Rotjaw rewards players with a Bounty Token. Pacts and Traits Each Pact comes with a set of unique Traits that unlock new gameplay options. Hunters must pledge themselves to a Pact and earn Pledge Marks to unlock Traits. Trait Charms are available at Pledge Posts, and players can exchange Pledge Marks for Event Traits. Burn Traits, a new category of single-use Traits, can be acquired multiple times. Primal Pact, Smugglers Pact, and Grounded Pact offer different sets of Traits. Event Points Event Points drive player progress and allow for the acquisition of rewards. Players earn Event Points by performing various actions such as interacting with Event Clues or Rifts, banishing Targets, and extracting Bounty Tokens. Ship Altars, new event objects, provide Event Points when interacted with or destroyed. Ship Altars Ship Altars spawn in different locations and offer Event Points upon interaction. Destroying Ship Altars yields fewer points but causes damage and bleeding to nearby Hunters. New Changes Shooting Range A new area where players can test their loadouts and improve their gunplay skills. Different sections cater to short, medium, and long-range shooting, throwable testing, and projectile penetration testing. Target Dummies Custom dummies representing actual Hunters, featuring 150 Health Points and status effects. The dummies reset after 3 seconds when downed and are visible in Dark Sight. Ping Range Indicator Players can utilize the ping function in the Shooting Range to measure distances accurately. Range indicators display the distance between the player's position and the ping marker's location. Range indicators are also visible for teammates' ping markers. Custom Respawn Options When downed in the Shooting Range, players have two options for revival: Reviving in place with full health. Respawning in a safe nearby location with full health and replenished inventory. Multiplayer Options The Shooting Range allows players to join with a group of up to 3 players. Ammo Crates Fixed amounts of ammunition per type are now available when resupplying from regular and special ammo crates. Increased amounts of ammo received from Ammo Boxes. Dual Wield Ammo Reduction To balance gameplay, the extra ammunition carried when dual wielding handguns has been reduced by half.
