Been having varying levels of Rain World brain rot for the last while, so a good chunk of what I've been drawing lately are slugcats. Most of these are my own ideas because I've gotten more attached than I intended. I'll yell about them under the cut.
First is an attempt at a Hunter design featuring a slugpup I've been calling the Squire. My main idea is that before the end of Hunter's campaign, they leave Squire with Gourmand's colony, and Squire ends up acting as a guard there when they're older.
The second image is of the Cathode (green) and the Chameleon (black and white). They're both purposed organisms from a different group of iterators than those in-game. Cathode is resistant to electricity and can store electric charges to stun attackers, and they were made to help maintain a damaged iterator can. Chameleon is the obligatory part-lizard scug, being made with white lizard traits by a different iterator than Cathode. Chameleon was frequently overshadowed by their creator's other slugcat, though, so they end up leaving and being taken in by Cathode's creator. I imagine Cathode and Chameleon end up as a bonded pair and are pretty much inseparable after the Chameleon arrives.
The last is the Scholar (or at least my take on that idea, I've seen the title used by others). They'd be post-Saint, purposed by an iterator to investigate why communications have gone quiet. Design-wise, they'd be closer to Gourmand's build but very fluffy, and the darker fur around the eyes was meant to resemble glasses, but I realized it looked a bit like a raccoon's mask, resulting in the tail stripes.

Some rain world art! My OC: the scholar!
Backstory: made by moon in her prime, the scholar was to gather info storage mediums (pearls) and have bring the information within to moon’s attention. To navigate the lizard infested environment, moon gave her the ability to communicate with lizards. Because of this, lizards are very tolerant with her, only taking one food item to tame (2 for reds). When moon collapsed, the scholar loyally stayed by her side until hunter revived her. After that, though, moon could no longer communicate with the scholar, as her mark was gone. Because of this, moon couldn’t tell the scholar when the rain was coming, and the scholar didn’t think it was a danger since moon’s can had always been safe. The scholar was washed all the way to outskirts by the extremely heavy rain. And that’s where the player takes control.

iterator refs! again. just the sibs for now
Some design notes and headcanons:
I tried to make their color palettes swap as much as possible
Their outfits I tried very hard not to make just generic robes. Moon's is based on Catholic clergy wear with an academic stole (yellow stoles represent a scholar in the sciences apparently?). The stole is velcro'd on lol
She has slightly more complex clothing due to her age. Pebbles is closer to the casual wear for his citizens, with his body covered in bandages underneath.
My iterators have little screens on their faceplate to emote if they want to! Pebbles is more prone to using it, whilst Moon will only use it if interacting with her citizens.
Collapsed Moon's body is covered in dark stains—the dried void fluid-based blood of iterators. Parts of her body are scarred or misshapen, where her endoskeleton cracked and healed back wrong. She's also missing her right hand. Her robe is tied with some monster kelp stem, courtesy of monk, perhaps. That robes probably got e. coli.
In my rw canon, Pebbles does not survive his collapse, so pictured here would be around Rivulet. The Rot has hijacked into his main nutritional supply—the rarefraction cell can keep him conscious, but he's beginning to degrade into a husk.
The dark spot on his forehead is an empty eye socket that puppets are grown with but have removed. Ill do all my iterator xenobio in another post someday. Moon actually has her third eye! But it's fairly useless.
Sick Pebbles robe is falling apart rather fast due to his new habit of picking at things when stressed. Not to mention, with his puppet weak, injuries are quick to happen and slow to heal. He's resorted to tearing off pieces of fabric to wrap open wounds. You can see here that he's used his belt to cover his hand.

what would be a good name for the 3rd surv monk sibling
NO ONE HAS NAMED THEM SO I SHALL GIVE TWO OF MY CONTENDERS(AND OF THEY HAVE I HAVENT SEEN IT)
Tumblr media
Edit:just learnt that a popular rw artist had named them the nomand, though I intend on calling em scholar in my au since they have the ability to read pearls and understand echos without the mark

(based off the glyph ask)
i don't think the wanderer glyph means "knowledge of", it doesn't make full sense in the context of the achievement. Since the wanderer is by sleeping in every region itself, it'd be kinda weird that it's just "knowledge". while it does make sense for some of the other glyphs it's in, i think it's more fitting that it's more like... every of. Like, every region. every echo (for the pilgrim), etc.
Pilgrimage could be something like "every karma" since it does require gaining karma 10, without just instantly skipping to it. you have to go through "every karma" first.
second thing, if we look at the glyphs "dragon slayer", "stolen enlightenment", "closure", and "outlaw" we can see a grouping of four lines (two on each side) that almost make an X pattern. given the nature of these glyphs, i think we can assume that this pattern means "to kill" or harming/destroying in some way. More than just violence. It could also mean... to steal, or perhaps steal and killing are similar in meaning. (stealing life, basically)
so Stolen enlightenment (the achievement you get from eating moon's neurons) could mean like. Stealing / Destroying (the X) Enlightenment/peace/blessing (monk) through eating (karma 4)
The glyph "assistance" could also be something related to iterators, as it's only really seen with in regards to them. There's also graffiti in moon's chamber, which looks like it has a similar symbol.
The messenger (spearmaster run achievement) glyph also has the same "7" like shape, just without a crossbar.
Tumblr media
The graffiti btw ^
Good catch!! The Wanderer glyph is a tricky one. I think it makes the most sense when combining both interpretations, as in "knowledge of [every] region" or "knowledge of [every] echo" etc.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Scholar seems to be the biggest supporter of the "knowledge" interpretation, being just the Wanderer glyph with the “assistance” glyph. You're right, the "assistance" symbol is only seen in Scholar and a Helping Hand, as far as I can tell... Yeah I'll accept that as the iterator symbol
The Messenger... possibly has a different variation of it? But I do notice that it has the singular vertical line also seen in Champion and Expedition Leader! Perhaps that line means "completed"?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
OH THE SIDE LINES…. I noticed them but never consciously made the connection between them like that ... In A New Friend, the lines surround the O (monk glyph) specifically!

i am learning so much about rw glyphs

these two arent really a pair but i almost never get to talk about them together
the scholar is a very well-travelled slugcat who loves to go around to any iterator they can find and get reigonal pearls read out to them and start a collection in the local shelter
summer is an iterator who stopped iterating, realizing the impossibility of the task. so now he has a lot of free time
and now he can spend part of that time reading pearls to a silly little guy! they are respectful most of the time but often threaten with grabbing and taking away any pearls summer doesn't want to read and bringing them to someone else. so if summer doesnt want anyone else to know about it, he has to read anyway. they are very silly

yess i know the 1800 thing is just a buncha flamboyant rich people. but im talking about the the rennessaince. it was during the reneissance when christian kabbalah emerged. thats what i mean when i say jewish and christian theologians sharing knowledge
The Christian Cabala movement had less to do with Jewish and Christian theologians sharing knowledge and much more to do with Christians musing on Jewish mysticism which were meant to be a tool of debate with Jewish religious scholars and a method of trying to convince Jews to convert.
Trust and believe, there was very little happening in Christian circles during the Renaissance that was interested in giving Jews a voice or equal footing in those conversations.
And it has little to nothing to do with the mysticism included in the RWS deck because that was based on Hermetic Qabalah, which is a different system.
The point of all this is not whether Christians and Jews have ever shared knowledge. The point is that the use of Hebrew letters and symbols in tarot is inappropriate. The sacred meanings of the alphabet and the symbol of the tetragrammaton are supposed to be secret knowledge. The tetragrammaton in particular is not even supposed to be used in casual artwork because it contains one of the secret names of God.
So....yeah, still cultural appropriation.

TELL ME ABOUT UR RW FANTASY AU???
ok well I was going to mope around because I woke up at 5 pm but then I saw this and it made me smile. So you get information, as a treat.
I have turned all the Iterators into creatures!! hooray!! Our main group starts with Moon, Pebbles, NSH, UI, and Wind, who all live in an orphanage together and have a pretty mundane to vaguely sad lives.
Moon and Pebbles share a supply closet for a room, and Pebbles only really talks to her if he can help it. He's the worlds angriest baby.
But eventually, Moon decides the orphan life isn't really working for them, so they all decide to leave and go on a journey.
Originally, they were going to leave Pebbles behind because he's like 5 yrs old /hyp, but he follows them far enough before announcing his presence so that they have to take him along. And so the journey begins! Many hi jinks abound from here.
Now, in this au, instead of rain, or the great cycle, our main problem is the Mist. The Mist is areas of fog and rain that have a sort of reality bending effect, when you go fully into Mist, you're probably not coming back, it's a bit like stepping into an alternate world, time doesn't pass in a clear way, if at all, and the inside of the Mist can be much larger than it's actual size. The closest most people will get to Mist is Fringe Mist, which is the area around Mist that hasn't quite been taken over by it yet. In Fringe Mist, you can see some of the reality bending effects, without becoming stuck in it.
The biggest problem, however, is the fact that Mist only ever really grows in size, and there's no known way to get rid of it. The world is very slowly becoming consumed by the Mist.
Either from the start or later along in the journey, they decide to go to a scholars/wizard academia. A establishment mostly dedicated to finding a solution for the Mist Problem.
And when they finally get there, they meet two people, Seven Red Suns, and Sliver of Straw, scholars who give them a tour of the academia. The group has a number of different skills in their arsenal from their journey, so they don't have much trouble establishing themselves in the academia. They find themselves at home rather quickly.
And nothing goes wrong after that! Certainly not! :)
