Microwave rant: autism,comfort and a roach named Gregor samsa

So I have a affinity for the novella metamorphosis for reasons I hardly understand it just stuck to my brain like a rat to a glue trap

I Read it once then went on to other things, life has a funny way of ripping you away from your interest but now that I’m back to school I have access to my chrome book and i have found on the list of things that aren’t banned one of this is the pdf of metamorphosis I had read

I had nothing better to do in class so I read on with it and was instantly back in the midst of a obsession dead eyed just completely overtaken by my computer

But I could only ever read it at school sure I could technically bust out my chrome book but that’s both a waste of time and i couldn’t force myself to do the effort so I went in search for a physical copy

I had been trying to get one before unsuccessfully and my other attempts proved the same I eventually gave up and left myself to only read in my free at school

So i am reading and my honors American literature teacher (hamlet) comes up to me

“Your still reading this?”

And I go on my rant talking on about my affections and frustrations that I can only read it at school

And before I could even finish she is up and to the library putting in my hands a copy of a book

‘Metamorphosis’

I instantly go to ask her if I may buy it off of her willing to practically pay anything for this thing I had been dreaming about and she just nods her head and tells me

“If it makes you happy I wish for you to have it”

Instantly I am jumping,stomping,squealing hugging the book as if it was going to be ripped from me

She looks upon me with glee and she tells me such telling me it’s worth it if it makes this happy

I ask her if she is alright with hugs she is and I embrace her with all the strength I have all the while cradling the book within my arms

And I go to all of my classes and to my brother ranting and raving of my new book and all it’s all I can do not to simply sit myself down in the garden and ignore all of my classes

And I think of this, this simple act that has brought me so much happiness and joy and for the first time in maybe a long time I feel something more then simply apathy

I feel comfortable

The comfort to know that when I wish I may read this book this novella that calms my mind breaks me from the stress of my life, I no longer have to labor to read it or rely on internet

For my viewing pleasure whenever I may feel so Tempted and that ability that access to my comfort media is something that I have not known and it’s such a wonderful feeling to not feel like I need to protect my things or hoard them in fear of loosing them or more likely intentionally taking them away as a punishment

This is all to say I feel comfortable in a way that I haven’t felt in a long time a small thing meant a lot to me

FAIRLY LONG POST!

Part 2

LYRICS "How do I look like now? Am I unsightly? Of course I am."

This doesn't just represent Mizuki, but Mafuyu. This is also why they were the two to sing Villain - and no, I'm not talking about the trans Mafuyu headcanons. I'd love for that to happen, but I don't think that's what it's about. For Mizuki, it's about how people feel about their secret. They disgust people by being themself, and if Mafuyu were her "true self", she'd probably do the same. A lot of people - namely her mum - accept as the person she's forced to be, not the person she is. In the 3DMV, Mizuki holds up their hand, looks at it, then faces the camera and smiles. I am still human. I am still myself. I can see it clearly. What do you see that I don't? ""I beg you, please don't throw the apples at me." They Lock up, Lock up to themselves-""

In The Metamorphosis, Gregor Samsa's father throws apples at him. One badly injures him, and this line is referring to exactly that. Don't hurt me. Don't turn your backs on me. Don't treat me like filth.

"Of course, I couldn't even have a proper fight with you."

This, obviously, refers to Mafuyu and her mum. When it comes to Gregor Samsa, it might refer to how he can't even communicate with his family. He has no way to defend himself, to explain what he's doing, to explain how much he's struggling. He is suffering, his family is pretty much shaming him for it, and he can't even tell them.

"It's not a joke! Don't eat my dreams away!"

Ena and Mafuyu both got the full line, just to clarify (+ KAITO). I'm not gonna link it to Gregor this time, just point out how this links to Mafuyu's mum not letting her have the career she wants, and Ena's dad discouraging her in terms of her art.

"It's as if you're biting into the apple, Sa-sa-Samsa."

Again, Mafuyu and Mizuki both sang the full line (+ KAITO). Gregor never took out that apple, I don't think - he left it to rot. To me, this symbolises self-sabotage, feeding off something that has hurt you beyond repair. Mafuyu and her mum, for instance - despite everything leading up to the events in Immiscible Discord (and then Saying Goodbye to My Masked Self), she can't hate her. In fact, multiple times before this event, Mafuyu has tried to make it clear that she still very much loves her.

"Even if I'll become a shadow of my former self, I'm right here."

Kanade got this line, but I still think it suits Mafuyu more. Even if she's not the person she acted like she was, even if she'll never be seen the same way, she's still Mafuyu. She can change her name, she can change her appearance, whatever she wants, but that shouldn't change how people feel about her. That shouldn't make her mum turn on her. That shouldn't change anything. In the 3DMV, for this and the next line, the focus is on Kanade and Mafuyu only. These lines are about them. What I've said about Mafuyu, but also Kanade's determination to save her.

"Even if I'm poisoned by the fringed iris."

I spoke about this here. TL;DR: The fringed iris (otherwise know as the butterfly flower) is poisonous and was used around castles to slow enemies. Here, it could refer to Mafuyu's mum again. Putting up walls to protect herself will only do so much, and eventually they'll come crashing down, and it'll only hurt her more. In the 3DMV, she also does a motion like eating an apple, which links back to the biting into the apple point I made. "The light is there, at 25:00 (1 a.m.). Now drag along your tail, Sa-sa-sa-sa-Samsa."

Again, the Samsa is sang by everyone at the same time. Gregor Samsa, as time goes on, finds it far harder to even move. Struggle through your pain, basically, because you'll find that light at the end, at 25:00 - when their group meets up. Again, probably a reference to Kanade trying to save her. Also, During her line, Ena's the only one shown reaching for the light. This could be because she's the only one who's been really and truly saved. Does her art frustrate her? Does she still encounter hardships? Of course she does. But she can face them now, properly. She doesn't have that desire to disappear anymore. Look at I nandesu - she sees beauty in the world, in herself, in love, in her art, in everything.

CARDS

I've already pointed out the fringed iris, but also that it could be a japanese iris, which represents hope. Then you have Mafuyu, the butterfly. Unlike Samsa, she hasn't changed into a "hideous" creature. She's a beautiful one, in fact. There are other butterflies put on display. I don't think this represents Mafuyu's true self - it shows her "masked self". The one that everyone admires. In this event, Kanade is trying to save Mafuyu from her mum, but from the perspective of her mum, she's not doing that. She's only holding her back. Trapping her. The way I see it, this set is seeing them the way Mafuyu's mum would. Kanade, the charwoman, with her white hair and the almost completely vertical feathers in her hat. At first, the charwoman is the only one not disgusted by Gregor, the only one who has seen the worst and isn't fazed by him, but she turns his room into a dump. A cave. That's what Mafuyu's mum is seeing - someone with good intentions, maybe, but she is ruining Mafuyu's life by making music with her and distracting her from her studies, and Mafuyu sees it only as kindness. Also, unlike the charwoman, she's kept the furniture there. She's keeping what makes Mafuyu comfortable, even if (at least in her mum's eyes) it restricts her.

When Mafuyu's mum interacted with Ena, she actually got a good impression of her. Ena had to force herself to mention her dad. She told her mum she'd be using Mafuyu as a model. Ena doesn't represent someone from the Metamorphosis, I don't think. Rather, she draws what Mafuyu's mum can't see - her daughter's pain. The fringed iris that keeps her mother from her true self. The apples she's thrown at her so many times. The mirror that Mafuyu has looked into so many times, and seen the same thing each time. She draws these in books, because Mafuyu's studying, the pressure from her mum, all of it, that's where a lot of that pain comes from.

Don't think they've ever interacted with Mafuyu's mum, but if she knew their secret, this is what she'd see. Someone who seems like a friend, trying to poison her. The opposite of Kanade, basically. This is also a good way to show how people in general see Mizuki, or, certainly, trans people. Mizuki and Mafuyu are both Samsa, and Ena and Kanade are both the charwoman (if you ignore the part where she dehumanises Gregor and such). Also, note the spider necklace. Ena is the only other one with this, with some sort of insect. Gregor finds, at some point, that he can just climb up walls and onto ceilings. In fact, he quite enjoys it. Even then, though space would help, part of him didn't want to have the furniture taken because he's still attached to it. He's still human. That's the thing here. Mizuki has been dehumanised. Mizuki has disgusted people for being themself. They're no less human, yet people continue to act like that's the case.

Samsa, Mafuyu and Mafuyu's Mum

Mafuyu's mum is everyone, really, who isn't Samsa. Maybe not all to start with, but definitely towards the end of the story. I'll go through the list:

Grete, his sister - she started to see taking care of him as a chore, and was the one to propose letting him die.

His dad - after a series of events, he mistakes Gregor's actions for being harmful, throws the apples at him like I mentioned previously. He never cared about his son - he cared about the man who made them money, who provided for them, who was a human. Not the man who didn't appear human, nor the man who loved him even if he couldn't say so, even if he could do nothing to show it.

His mum - so desperate to see him, but disgusted when she did. She loved him still, but she didn't grieve his loss. Rather, she was relieved.

The charwoman later on - She's blunt. She doesn't care about how Gregor feels, because he's been reduced to just a thing. He's dead? Happens to every other insect. No big deal.

And then Mafuyu, of course is Samsa.

Even if other people can accept who she is, what about her parents? Her mum, especially. Will she ever see her the same? Will she ever love her again? Will she ever get that approval again? What happens if she stops meeting the high expectations she set? What happens when she tries to run, when she tries to talk, when she tries to rebel? Will she die thinking of her mum, still, rather than those who truly care for her, and herself? Will her mum continue to hurt her? Is it even intentional? If she could just speak properly, find the right words, could that solve everything, or will it never be enough? If she gives herself away, does that erase any chance she ever had of coming back from it, if that chance was even there to begin with?

The first time I read The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka, I was in my second year of college.

At the time, despite going to a university that was a 12-hour drive away, I faithfully returned home during every break, every holiday, and every long weekend. Much like Gregor Samsa, the protagonist of The Metamorphosis and breadwinner of the Samsa household, I thought my family needed me. They couldn't function without me. Texts and calls flooded in every day from my siblings, my mother, my father, so at the end of my second year of college, I wrote a creative nonfiction essay about The Metamophosis. My family is not like Samsa's, I claimed. Even if I get transformed into a bug like Samsa did, they would never faint at the sight of me. They accepted me each and every time I returned home from college, slightly changed from the last but still human at my core. They loved me, I said. They always will.

The recent release of Teniwoha's "Zamuza" via Project Sekai's N25 brought me back to that essay, and upon rereading it for the first time since I wrote it four years ago, I... pity myself. At 19, I had not yet come to terms with my family's dysfunction, my mother's narcissism, and my father's neglect. Being parentified growing up often means that you're the last of your siblings to realize you were cheated of a proper childhood, and that growing up too quickly has detrimental consequences on your health. Cortisol, the steroid hormone released into your body during long periods of stress, is only good for your body in smaller doses. Today, I am writing this post at 6am after rolling around in bed for hours, stuck in the limbo of waking and sleeping. Unfortunately, insomnia is only one of the issues that arise in adulthood after living in fight-or-flight mode your entire life. I would love to tell you more, but that would make this post way too long, so let's move on to the interesting stuff:

I see a lot of my younger self in Mafuyu Asahina, who puts on a "good girl" facade her entire life in order to meet the expectations of her demanding parents. By that I mean, she sacrifices her happiness and her identity to secure love and empathy from her mother, and boy do I know helpless that feeling can be. I only wish that when I was in high school, I also had good friends like Kanade, Mizuki, and Ena. That it didn't take me so long to realize that I am not responsible for my parents' emotions and that I did not need to take on adult responsibilities at a young age to be loved. Because love, as most people learn at a young age and I learned when I was a little older, is supposed to be unconditional.

Gregor Samsa, who transformed into a bug at the beginning of the story, died at the end of The Metamorphosis due to familial neglect. After sacrificing his entire life and identity to serve his family, they moved on quickly without him once he was no longer useful as their golden child. This would have been my fate, had I not pivoted my priorities later on during college to focus on myself. This would have been Mafuyu's fate, if not for her good friends who are unconditionally invested in her well-being. The song "Zamuza" is inspired by The Metamorphosis, and the song is often called "Samsa" when referred to in English. A tribute to Samsa, I think this song is not only Kanade's attempt to save Mafuyu, but also her way of making sure that Samsa, despite being forgotten by his family, will continue to be remembered by her audience.

Gregor’s dreaming was always restless, troubled, agitated.

Usually plagued with nightmares, he thought he’d get used to it at some point. That point never came. In fact, it just made him more uneasy when his dreams weren’t horrific in nature.

Like this one. Too good to be true, the warmth holding him tightly and telling him everything he ever wanted to hear. How his work was finally done, how many people he saved and how he could rest. How he was loved, and how he could rest. To settle down with that Fixer from the Zwei, someplace far away from the City — such a place had to exist, didn’t it?

He doesn’t respond much in his dream, in the sense that he brought not much to the conversation. He did speak a lot, in quiet I love yous as he shivered in the embrace.

Dreams like that made him uneasy. But when he awoke, with everything ripped from him, he nearly ripped himself apart with it.

He lay in bed for a while, not doing anything, slowly catching his breath. Eventually, slowly, he forced himself from the not-comforting-enough sheets and trailed along the walls of Mephistopheles to meet up with the other Sinners.

“Vergil~ Ver… c’mon, don’t you think you owe us a little stop?”

Red pierced the dull light filtering through the bus windows, causing Gregor to squint and grumble under his breath. Rodion causing problems already? “I’m not sure what makes you think I owe you anything. Need I remind you that you work for the Company? You take on whatever I tell you to, with no complaints.” The manager’s ticking sped up as Dante tried to calm their boss. The Color placed a hand on their shoulder as he stepped away, instead opting to converse with Charon (but not before ordering them to get their Sinners under control with a huff.)

<Where exactly are you wanting to go anyway, Rodion?>

“Any number of places… ah, what were they… South Section 1? …3? 6?” “EAT,” Ryoshu spoke pointedly, once again not being clear with her intentions, despite how confident she sounded. And, as he usually does, Sinclair was the one to pipe up to elaborate on her odd acronyms. “I… think that means ‘Everything Already Told.’ Something like all of the above, right?” As if affirming Sinclair’s assumption, Ryoshu flicked her cigarette out the window and turned to face the group. “The areas listed belong to that of the Zwei Association,” she explained with a smirk, “the last group of Fixers we worked with.” With a nod, Dante turned their attention to Rodion again. <What do you want with them?>

Rodion glanced at Gregor from the corner of her eye, and instantly he felt hot. She wasn’t trying to set him up, was she? “I’m pretty sure one of them pocketed my chicken voucher off me… you don’t want to start paying for my meals now, do you? We’ll be in and out, I promise!”

What a load of shit, Gregor held back the spiteful phrase as he bit his lip and waited in his seat. It took quite a bit of asking from Dante (and quite a bit of translating from Faust), but eventually, Vergilius gave in on the pretense that he really didn’t want to spend more money than he had to on the Sinners — and, they argued, their money was his money. So they were going to find the Zwei Association, wherever they were.

The first stop was the 3rd South Section. Or was the ‘3’ part of the title, and not a method of categorizing? Such useless questions bounced around inside Gregor’s head, distracting him from the growing pit in his stomach that Rodion was slowly digging deeper. “You owe me for this.” “No, I don’t… I didn’t ask for it either.” “But you know it’s for the best, don’t you?” “...I didn’t say that.” Despite averting his gaze, he can still hear the woman stifle a chuckle, informing him that he was still as poor an actor as he ever was.

When Dante came to a stop and Faust began speaking in their place, it was clear to the rest of the Sinners that there was some sort of negotiation taking place. Rodion even sneaked to their sides to continue spreading her web of lies, leaving her friend to hope she wouldn’t cause more trouble.

Though, if she had gone through that much trouble, he should at least follow through on what he had said that night. Slipping past the crowds and into the office, he squinted his eyes as he searched and even began calling out one name in particular. Eventually, he saw a hand raised, and before it had even dawned on him, he was rushing to the spot with his heart pounding in his ears.

You had returned only moments ago from an individual mission, unloading your weapons and other necessities from your aching back. You laugh, amused at seeing the same brunet consecutively every other week, but you didn’t mind. The first meeting was a welcome one, after all, and your feelings remained genuine.

“I- I need… to tell you something,” he spoke through labored breaths, clearly having sprinted to your spot. “Shoot!” “Uh… I don’t think- not here, is there any chance I can pull you away for a minute?” The interaction seemed increasingly awkward, which only made you feel more worried about him. What could possibly have gotten him so riled up? How naive you must be.

Regardless, you agree, and just barely mention to get away from the eyes of the Company and the Association managers. You can’t tell if he’s averting his eyes due to the lowering sun, the light dancing on his face, though the words heavy on his tongue are all too obvious to himself.

“I love you,” Gregor says.

“Huh?” “The mission, the other day… I said ‘I love you.’ You didn’t hear me.” Your eyes widen as you’re shot with an almost cartoonish flashback. “Oh… oh, hah. Haha. You see, what’s funny is I did hear that, but I thought I made it up…” The soldier’s shoulders slumped, seeming to take the response as a negative. “Me too,” you add. It was his turn to respond, “Huh,” with the most dumbfounded look.

“I guess ‘I love you too’ would’ve worked better- sorry for the confusion!” He continues staring at you, not really registering the phrase. You grab the insectoid arm again, appreciating the texture once more.

Wordlessly, he grabs onto your other hand and just stares into the interlocking of your fingers.

“This’ll be convoluted, won’t it… promise you’ll visit more?” You question with a tilt of your head.

tokyo ghoul dnd club: the first few days (aka, chapter 1 as a campaign)

brainrot in the discord server has evolved into a tumblr post. working with 5e dnd since that's the ruleset i know (sorry 3.5e)

Context

kaneki and hide are first years (the former likes the storytelling aspect, the latter is a supportive friend)

eto is a senior and the dm

rize also shows up for an interest in the "you can be whatever you want!" part. kaneki gets the Instant Crush

Character Creation

they have pre-gen'd characters to try out the game, and eto sets up a oneshot similar to the tg pilot for them to play. it becomes apparent rize antagonizes both eto and the other players. kaneki doesn't see it, but eto and hide start Scheming to kick her out

the game is fun, though! they start making proper characters at level 1. eto expands on the world of the oneshot, creating the baseline for the TG universe.

kaneki mentions wanting to emulate a gregor samsa-type character and eto works with him on it. eto offers the artificial half-ghoul angle and kaneki gets SO excited about it

hide doesn't want to be too involved in the campaign bc he wants to try out other clubs, so he works with eto to keep his character in situations where he'd be ready to jump in at any point. she gives him additional ccg lore to work with.

rize does not consult with eto after the "man-eating monsters" part of the lore hits her brain. makes her own character.

hide stole a peek at her character sheet and told eto. they set up a trap to kill rize's character

Campaign

hide brings pizza, which becomes a longstanding tradition at the club

after helping kaneki get more into character, hide leaves to try out whichever club had his interest that day, leaving kaneki with eto and rize

the date stuff plays out as normal, with rize being eerily cooperative.

rize: i lead kaneki to a dark alleyway, and i ATTACK HIM kaneki: w-what eto: like, with a knife? rize: no, with my KAGUNE! *reveals her level 3 ghoul character sheet in this level 1 campaign (she got bored reading the features beyond level 4 so she didn't go further)* eto, grinning: oh yeah ok roll attack kaneki: WHAT

fortunately, kaneki built a high intelligence/dexterity character, so rize misses the first attack. eto points out various ways for him to run to goad him into fleeing and he doesnt ask questions. rize's confused given how the disengage action works, but she likes the cat and mouse aspect of this part.

kaneki gets really uncomfortable and steals a glance at eto when rize's having too much fun describing how she's going to tear his character apart. eto just winks at him

eto: rize. rize: what eto: roll a dexterity saving throw with disadvantage rize: why eto: do it

rize fails, and is crushed by steel beams. eto gives a very vivid description of how the beams tear through her ghoul body, which is stuck in a cycle of regenerating and breaking apart anew under the weight. it's an agonizing experience (kaneki listens with bated breath. eto could be a writer, he thinks)

rize: what about kaneki?! he's right next to me, and if he fails he gets instantly killed.

kaneki, in a rare display of luck, succeeds. (eto inwardly sighs with relief). rize rage quits and doesn't come back.

the session ends smoothly with kaneki as an artificial half-ghoul like he wanted. he also loses his Instant Crush on rize after that

hide later gives eto a high five for a job well done

Fahrenheit 451 is a bit too modern to fit with the other stories, but Fuuta could be Guy Montag. The book’s themes of censorship and the fire symbolism fit him pretty well. Mahiru reminds me a little of Jane Eyre, though it’s not a perfect comparison.

And something about Es reminds me of The Pit and the Pendulum short story— the amnesia, the lack of control, the fact it is much more about the story than it is the character telling it.

I'm thinking about Princess Kaguya again. And how she left, how she got her eternal blissfullness, surrounded by her people, going home, to the place before life. She came to earth and she suffered, she suffered time and time again, she was broken, and at her darkest moment she begged to the moon and said "let me go back to that time before life. Let me have peace. Let me be free of my heart." And once she said that, her fate was sealed, and no matter how much she longed to live, how much she loved, she had to go. And they came for her, they came to her aid, and she was now heartless. Sorrowless and loveless. Cold. Indifferent.

Thinking about Eurydice. Thinking about her cold body in the snow, as Hades approaches her, and he offers her food and safety and a warmth. Thinking about how she never got that before. How much she longed "a nice soft place to land" and to "lay down forever" . How not even love could made her stay, how she willingly singed her life away. But even in death, she was restless. And she longed for the earth above, for her lover and for the sun, but even as he came down for her, her fate was sealed. It is a sad tale.

Thinking about Frodo leaving Middle Earth. Thinking about how he gave in, how he fell for the Ring, and he always knew he would. Thinking about the helplessness, the weight of the knowledge that you are going to die. And you are oh so sure you are going to die. How do you go on there? He knew he would claim the Ring for himself, he knew he would die chasing after it, in the lava, just like Maedhros before him. And when he didn't die, he was left so hollow, not even love could save him. And he left, because the world wasn't for him. And what was of him, in the Undying lands? Thinking of Gregor Samsa. He wasn't even a person, he was too broken to be loved. He was harmless, but useless, and is there a greater sin than uselessness? He died, to bring his family peace. To bring himself peace. To end their suffering, and his own suffering. He was too far gone, he too did not belong to the world.

Thinking about Shinji Ikari. Thinking about how it was his fault the world ended. Thinking about all the people that longed for connection and peace, to be one with each other, to get rid of the self and be part of the world, even of that meant they wouldn't be themselves anymore. All they wanted to know was eternity, peace, and the lengths they went through to achieve it. Thinking about Shinji helplessly stuck in his EVA, longing for that connection. Thinking about how it all came to an end. He was broken, and the world was destroyed, but even then. Even then he chose to live. Even then, he chose to stay. Despite the pain. Despite the isolation, the loneliness inherent to individuality. Despite the fact there wasn't even a world to come back to in the first place, even then he chose to stay. He chose to stay and suffer. He may never be happy, but he is willing to accept that, because life, life on earth is a gift that can't be thrown away. Self-awareness is a miracle. Even when pain is endless, to be yourself is just so wonderful. "Despite everything, it's still you"

The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka (Book Review)

First of all, let's talk about the writer, Franz Kafka. Ia merupakan seorang novelis Yahudi asal Jerman yang lahir pada tahun 1883, setelah membaca beberapa bukunya kita pasti akan sadar bahwa Kafka tidak dekat dengan kedua orang tuanya. Ayah Kafka merupakan seorang pebisnis materialistis dan seorang tiran di rumah tangganya, memiliki pengaruh yang signifikan terhadap kehidupan dan pekerjaan Franz Kafka. Kafka merasa tertindas oleh sang ayah hampir sepanjang hidupnya.

Kafka pada akhirnya expressed his love towards literature dengan cara menulis. Karya karyanya masih dinikmati oleh banyak orang hingga saat ini dan salah satunya adalah The Metamorphosis (Die Verwandlung) yang telah diterjemahkan ke dalam berbagai bahasa.

Buku ini menceritakan tentang seorang lelaki bernama Gregor Samsa yang terbangun dari tidurnya dalam keadaan ia sudah menjadi seekor serangga (jatuh sakit). Ia merupakan seorang pekerja keras yang bekerja pagi hingga malam untuk melunasi hutang keluarganya, namun pada saat Gregor berubah dan tidak bisa bekerja seperti sedia kala, ia dianggap sudah tidak berguna dan menerima penolakan dari keluarganya terutama dari sang Ayah. Ia dianggap sebagai beban dan pembawa sial.

Pada suatu malam, secara tidak sengaja ia menguping percakapan antara sang ayah, ibu dan adik perempuannya dimana ternyata sang ayah mempunyai tabungan yang cukup untuk membayar hutang hutangnya, ia telah menipu Gregor dengan mengatakan bahwa mereka sudah jatuh miskin dan tabungannya tidak cukup untuk membayar hutang sebelumnya.

Pada saat saat terakhirnya ia tetap sendiri dan akhirnya kematian Gregor pun berakhir secara tragis, keluarganya tidak menunjukan rasa kesedihan melainkan rasa lega, pada akhirnya anak yang mereka anggap sebagai “beban” telah mati dan mereka dapat melanjutkan kehidupan di kota lain dengan sisa uang yang mereka punya tanpa harus menanggung rasa malu.

Awalnya ga berniat baca buku apapun karena lagi dalam fase reading slump but I guess this book saved me? Buku The Metamorphosis lumayan tipis dan gaya penulisan Kafka yang cukup unik membuat aku tertarik untuk membaca buku ini. Kayaknya aku ditahap jatuh cinta banget sama tulisannya Kafka. Overall I give it 4/5. You all should read it too!

My Take from the episode Including: Info-Dump, and Questions & Concerns

Info-Dump:

Wolf Moon: the Wolf Moon is the Full Moon in January and is said to be named for the wolves that would howl outside of the village as a result of mid-winter food scarcity. The first episode centers around the first day/week back to school in Spring Semester of 2011 (January). Fun Fact: In this episode the full Moon occurs on Friday...the actual 2011 Wolf Moon occurred on Wednesday, January 19th.

Beacon Hills Preserve: No Entry After Dark: (Preserve - to keep safe from injury, harm, or destruction.) Similar to state parks in that they protect natural landscapes, but the emphasis is more on plants and animals, or specific geological features. They generally have fewer facilities and less development than state parks. Nature preserves can be operated by federal/state/local governments, private trusts, or even funded through public donations. Private nature preserves also exist, with land excluded from private land trusts and maintained at the sole cost of the proprietor. Fun Fact: I checked, and it’s not, but that font really does look like the Jurassic Park font, and honestly...equally filled with tragedy and dumb decisions.

Why did Stiles climb on the roof? Is he just being a dramatic bitch? I don’t even think Melissa is home for him to be sneaking around, because surely the both of them screaming like girls would have alerted her right?

Note: Stiles already knows that the Full Moon is on Friday even though he has yet to do any research on werewolves. I wonder if he keeps up with the moon phases due to the common believe amongst law enforcement/emergency responders/ER staff that people act out more on full moons?

How much of Scott and Stiles’ conversation did Derek overhear? I mean by all accounts he absolutely could have heard the discussion of enhanced senses and infections. Did he immediately suspect or know that Scott had been bitten at this point? And did he just happen upon Scott’s inhaler or did he look for it?

YOU CANNOT JUST SAY “YEAH IVE SEEN A GUY SPLINT A COUPLE OF BONES, I CAN TOTALLY DO THIS AND PRESCRIBE DRUGS WITHOUT XRAYS OR ANY HELP WHATSOEVER” SCOTT, SCOTT PLEASE, THIS DOG NEEDS PROFESSIONAL HELP.

Stiles says that the “fiber analysis came back from the lab in LA” Its at least been generally agreed that Beacon Hills is near-ish to San Francisco? Of course the show started out being filmed in Atlanta Georgia before moving to...Los Angeles, California. I don’t really know where I’m going with this...

Someone please god tell Stiles that a Jacket/Button-up/Tie is not proper house party attire. Save my poor socially graceless son.

And When I am Formulated - Reference List (for those who wanted one)

I know some of you liked the idea of this when I suggested it, so I've collected all the literature references from AWIAF.

I’ve also tried to include some of the reasons why they were used, you know... just in case you were wondering what’s up with the weird chapter titles :) 

-------------------------

Chapter 1 + 6: ‘The diving board’

-   This is from the short story, Forever Overhead, by David Foster Wallace.

-   I recommend reading it, simply because of how strange and alienating it is. However, I don’t recommend it if you’re currently experiencing depression or suicidal thoughts, simply because there’s an undercurrent there.

-   It’s mainly about societal systems and feeling constrained by the pointless processes that make up modern society. I figured the MC felt this way long before she got to the Borderlands.

Chapter 1: ‘John Steinbeck’s characters’.

-   They always play rummy in Of Mice and Men for some reason.

Chapter 4 + 22:  ‘The eyes that fix you in a formulated phrase...’, ‘until human voices wake us’, ‘forcing the moment to its crisis.’

-   These are all from The Love Song of J Alfred Prufrock by T.S. Eliot.

-   Although I have very, very mixed feelings about Eliot for a number of reasons, this poem pretty much helped summarise the story.

-   Chishiya pretty much had her ‘formulated’ from the very beginning, having already fixed her position in his plans. However, the only thing he didn’t have formulated was his own feelings.

-   Of course, the actual poem is about a proposal, which is why I couldn’t give you this list before :D

Chapter 4: Utopia by Thomas More.

-   I mean, this pretty much explains itself haha. 

Chapter 7 : ‘A Single Green Light’

-   This is from The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald.

-   Just like the green light on Daisy’s dock is a source of comfort to Gatsby, Kuina and Chishiya become a green light to the MC as they find her comfortable clothes and come to her aid in the militant situation, respectively.

Chapter 8: ‘Mad to Live, Mad to Talk’

-   The Road by Jack Kerouac.

-   This line features in a famous quote that was too long to include as a title: “the only people for me are the mad ones, the ones who are mad to live, mad to talk, mad to be saved, desirous of everything at the same time, the ones who never yawn or say a commonplace thing, but burn, burn, burn like fabulous yellow roman candles exploding like spiders across the stars”.

-   I thought this would represent how frenzied the beach is.

-   Everyone lives each day to the fullest, but it’s transient as they’re killed off every night.

Chapter 10: ‘A Train Whistle’

-   From Concerning the Sound of a Train Whistle in the Night by Haruki Murakami.

-   This is such a beautifully written short story. It’s so simple, yet it explains love so well.

-   The MC pretty much explained this one, but as I’m sure you all know, she ends up becoming the train whistle he needs to cut through the emptiness.

Chapter 11 + the underlined quote: ‘Without a Soul’, ‘I’m tired of being enclosed here...’

-   Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte.

-   Chishiya rejects the idea of being tied to someone, despite his instincts telling him the opposite.

-   It’s an argument of rationality vs imagination both on a ‘souls exist/don’t exist’ scale and ‘I love her/I don’t need her’.

-   It was so, so tempting to have that mystery underlined quote be something romantic, but instead it felt more real to have it be something that reflects how far the MC has come.

Chapter 11: ‘In books, I could go anywhere I wanted. I could be someone else. I wasn’t alone.’

-   This was actually inspired by Matilda, by Roald Dahl.

-   Particularly this line: “So Matilda’s strong young mind continued to grow, nurtured by the voices of all those authors who had sent their books out into the world like ships on the sea. These books gave Matilda a hopeful and comforting message: You are not alone”.

-       That line has always made me cry. 

Chapter 12:  The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka

-   It’s widely believed that Gregor Samsa’s father, who abuses him after he has turned into a cockroach.

-   I figured it could also reflect the MC’s father, as she’s spends the next day after the argument and Niragi’s attack focused on this book and plagued by it.

-   If books are usually her safe space, it has now been contaminated.

Chapter 14: ‘Half-Sick of Shadows’

-   The Lady of Shalott by Alfred Tennyson.

-   For those who haven’t read this beautiful poem yet, the Lady of Shalott is bound to her tower by a curse that will come into action if she ever looks out of the window. So, she uses a mirror to look out instead, but this only makes her unhappy as she watches others’ reaching happiness while she can only experience it through reflections.

-   Like the Lady of Shallot, the MC decides to take her life into her own hands, instead of letting her family hold her back.

Chapter 15: ‘Love and Squalor’

-   To Esme, with Love and Squalor, by J.D. Salinger.

-   In this whole chapter, the MC and Chishiya alternate between love and distrust. They’re somewhere in-between at this point in their relationship.

Chapter 18 + 19: ‘Do Not Go Gentle’

-   As you probably already know, this is Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night by Dylan Thomas.

-   This was included via a request, but it works perfectly for the Borderlands since everyone’s fighting death every single game, and they’re willing to do whatever it takes to survive.

-   It can also refers to their plan, and the idea that Chishiya and Kuina will go to extremes (like setting up Arisu) in order to escape the beach.

Chapter 19: ‘I May Think of You Softly’

-   The Crucible by Arthur Miller.

-   Although The Crucible has nothing in common with this fic, this quote itself summarises the MC’s feelings the best: “I may think of you softly from time to time. But I will cut off my hand before I’ll ever reach for you again”.

-   Even though she can’t stop loving him, she refuses to give in to his influence.

  Chapter 20 + 21: ‘Sound and Fury’

-   Macbeth by Shakespeare.

-   The full quote in Chapter 20 is from the famous “tomorrow and tomorrow” speech.

-   Life is simply excessive noise shouted by an idiot, but ultimately is pointless. The ‘idiot’ can be herself, for loving Chishiya; Niragi, for his relentless pursuit at getting back at Chishiya; or even the players themselves for trying so hard to survive.

-   Long story short, everything seems pointless since they’ll all probably die anyway.

Chapter 21: ‘Tread Softly’

-   From He Wishes for the Cloths of Heaven by Yeats.

-   In essence, she’s begging Chishiya to stop wiping his feet all over her dreams, lol.

Chapter 24: ‘And the Rest is Silence’

-   This is from Shakespeare’s Hamlet, and are also Hamlet’s last words.

-   Of course, it refers to death. It’s the last chapter, after all.

-   However, it’s just the death of the first stage, and the next one won’t be so silent :)

I downloaded Chrysalis with the promo code and really enjoyed it! If you're good with suggestions, it would be a good small full-lagth* book/long short story with the not-on-Discord stuff written out. (*sorry for the misspelling here, I'm dysgraphic and Google gave me a John W. Campbell novel when I tried to look it up)

Hey, it’s totally fine.

I absolutely get where you’re coming from-- but Chrysalis is a reimagining of “Metamorphosis”, a famous short story by Franz Kafka. That story’s in the public domain, so it’s fair game to mess around with. 

In that story, Gregor Samsa turns into a giant insect, but he has no way of communicating with the outside world, is trapped in his own head, and slowly becomes more and more of a burden on his family as he becomes more and more buglike. He winds up dying horribly. 

One of the most common interpretations of this story is that it’s about the meaninglessness and absurdity of human life, but... I always read it as a blatant ventfic/disability allegory. A story about slowly losing the ability to work, leave your room, or even speak, as your family has to pick up more and more of your slack, while you start to feel like you’re not even human anymore because you’ve become something grotesque? ...yeah. if you’re disabled, that hits some kind of way. 

...and I know I’m a sappy optimist who wants nothing but Happily Ever Afters, but I always hated that ending because I read it that way. I’m disabled myself. I know what it feels like to be a burden on the people you love. And I felt like Gregor deserved better.  

The internet is a lifeline for disabled people who have no voice-- literally or metaphorically. For people who are being abused at home and don’t know it yet. For queer people who think they’re the only one, and then find a community of Freaks Like Them. My internet friends have saved my life, more than once. 

So I started thinking: what if Gregor had internet friends, some of whom were in the same situation and he just didn’t know? 

and then Chrysalis happened. and I wrote it in like three days in a haze of madness, some of them in my bff @bioshocked-fallout‘s guest room (sorry, mate!). 

...So if I tried to write out the parts between the chatlogs, it’d just be rehashing the original short story, but Modern AU. I don’t feel up for that challenge.
