Address to a Haggis
Robert Burns
Fair fa’ your honest, sonsie face, Great Chieftain o’ the Puddin-race! Aboon them a’ ye tak your place, Painch, tripe, or thairm: Weel are ye wordy of a grace As lang ‘s my arm.
The groaning trencher there ye fill, Your hurdies like a distant hill, Your pin wad help to mend a mill In time o’ need, While thro’ your pores the dews distil Like amber bead.
His knife see Rustic-labour dight, An’ cut ye up wi’ ready slight, Trenching your gushing entrails bright, Like onie ditch; And then, O what a glorious sight, Warm-reekin, rich!
Then, horn for horn, they stretch an’ strive: Deil tak the hindmost, on they drive, Till a’ their weel-swall’d kytes belyve Are bent like drums; Then auld Guidman, maist like to rive, Bethankit hums.
Is there that owre his French ragout, Or olio that wad staw a sow, Or fricassee wad mak her spew Wi’ perfect sconner, Looks down wi’ sneering, scornfu’ view On sic a dinner?
Poor devil! see him owre his trash, As feckless as a wither’d rash, His spindle shank a guid whip-lash, His nieve a nit; Thro’ bluidy flood or field to dash, O how unfit!
But mark the Rustic, haggis-fed, The trembling earth resounds his tread, Clap in his walie nieve a blade, He’ll make it whissle; An’ legs, an’ arms, an’ heads will sned, Like taps o’ thrissle.
Ye Pow’rs wha mak mankind your care, And dish them out their bill o’ fare, Auld Scotland wants nae skinking ware That jaups in luggies; But, if ye wish her gratefu’ prayer, Gie her a Haggis!

Happy Friday Witches!
Tumblr media
Hello Witches! Today I have a cautionary tale from Scotland to share with you all 😊
Robert Burns, the famed Scottish poet, was born on January 25, 1759. He's honored this day with feasts, piping, toasts, and recitations. His work, "Tam O'Shanter," is a poem about the misadventures of a farmer who happens on witches and warlocks dancing, scaring him into giving up his drunken ways. The devil is also present among the witches, playing the bagpipes and the poem is told in a mixture of the Scots and English languages, making it sound very much like a spoken story. Burns often wrote in this dialect in order to appeal to more audiences rather than just catering to his homeland.
At the end, the character of Tom makes a comment about one of the witches who is dressed in a shirt which is too small, making the creatures chase after him for disrupting their fun. He uses his horse to get away in time although they pull his horse's tail off in the race. The poem ends as a warning against drinking and the harm it can bring towards yourself and others around you.

Oor boat is rigged tae face the greater sea, The day daws blithely whan we must set sail. Hou aften hae we twa wrocht in the gale, An waithert aa its wrath tae bear the gree? We stievely grupt the tiller, haund oan haund, Held firmly tae the course that we hud chosen; Be’t sauf bield o the loch, else sea, or ocean, Nae maitter! We wid siccarly mak laund! An mony’s the lauch we hud alang the wey, We caredna dael-a-hate the haund fate gien us, But made the best o’t, kennin fine atween us The bonds o luve we hud wid aye haud sway . Ayont the faur horizon Venus lowes, The Cosmos beckons tae us; pynt the prow!

Strawberries (Poem) There were never strawberries like the ones we had that sultry afternoon sitting on the step of the open french window facing each other your knees held in mine the blue plates in our laps the strawberries glistening in the hot sunlight we dipped them in sugar looking at each other not hurrying the feast for one to come the empty plates laid on the stone together with the two forks crossed and I bent towards you sweet in that air in my arms abandoned like a child from your eager mouth the taste of strawberries in my memory lean back again let me love you let the sun beat on our forgetfulness one hour of all the heat intense and summer lightning on the Kilpatrick hills let the storm wash the plates. Happy Robbie Burns Day! No gathering of family and friends - another event put off for another year. The haggis, the ‘neeps, the tatties and the scotch will all have to wait until later when hopefully we can have a big cèilidh. With any luck the festival in Fergus will happen this summer. To all my friends in Cape Breton, and my family.....
