Sea Nettle <3
Size: 3 feet across [bell] up to 20 feet long [tentacles]
Colors: Striped or spotted -- white, orange or reddish-brown. [different types of lighting can cause them to appear pink]
Lifespan: 6-18 months
Fun Facts:
✿ They eject bursts of water from the bottom of their bells to push themselves forward in the sea, but mostly use ocean currents to get around
✿ Sea Nettles reproduce both sexually & asexually
✿ Carnivorous -- they eat crustaceans, snails, fish & fish eggs, and other smaller jellyfish
✿ Eye spots on the bottom of their tentacles allow them to differentiate b/w light and dark [however, they cannot see or form images]
✿ Type of stinging jellyfish, non-lethal unless you're allergic to their venom

unusual sighting of a purple striped sea nettle jelly in the Oakland harbor tidal canal, 10/5/23. this species is usually only seen live along the Pacific coast so I was taken completely by surprise when we saw it in the east bay!
