This exchange on mourning wear comes from Angela Thirkell’s The Brandons, the story of a well-off widow and her two children and their social world. An aunt has just died and Miss Morris, the aunt’s companion, has come to live with the Brandons while she figures out her next job. Although the character Delia is worried that Miss Morris will take offense at being offered the dress, Miss Morris accepts it and puts it on and becomes “secretly intoxicated” at wearing a dress of such great value, and “looked almost sparkling” as a result.

Delia herself thought that giving up the dress was “her sacrifice” which tells how valued each garment was in the wardrobe of even a wealthy family. And she added a pair of silk stockings, another luxury, to her gift.
