Descent into Madness: Bullseye in Daredevil 284-290
Tumblr media
(Daredevil #287: “I'm a BIG hero.” art: Lee Weeks and Al Williamson, Writer: Ann Nocenti)
The 1990 Daredevil run by Ann Nocenti that centers on Bullseye (#284-290) is set after Bullseye's return from Japan and the adamantium operations and the Streets of Poison arc in Captain America . It is noted by the Kingpin that Bullseye was supposed to be lying low after the latter incident; something he has failed spectacular at.
Lester has, in the meanwhile, started to burglarize New York penthouses of valuable art, showing off his skills and knowledge of fine art and security systems. He keeps stating that he needs money and ranting to himself about wealth inequality. This implies that the Kingpin hasn't been financing him and that he has run low on funds. He seems to have no job or structure either and comes of unmoored and bitter.
Daredevil has been missing and NYC is under a crime wave that isn't just Bullseye's fault; with rising racial violence, crime and murder. Which is in line with the state of affairs in 1990's NYC: 1990 the city saw the most reported homicides on record, with 2,245. DD is returned but suffering from amnesia, Bullseye stumbles upon him -- saving him from a beating -- and decides on a gleeful whim to take his costumed identity.
Lester's idea is to continue his burglarizing under the guise of DD; however, as time goes by he starts to convince himself that he is a Robin Hood like figure and showers the money on random people. His ranting on the hoarding of wealth that the rich do, the white collar crimes and scams that leech of the people, and the 'good' he perceives he's doing escalate.
On one of his heists, a young woman threatens him with a gun and laments her misery of being kept by a rich man, asks him to take her with him. He does. For a few days, as noted by her late, he showers her with money and jewelry that he steals with her in mind. She laments that she's being kept again, this time by a thief and Lester snaps at her to wear them. There's as @honmyoseagull noted, a strong toxic masculinity at play with him being a 'breadwinner' and feeling that she owes him for it, which continues to escalate at Lester's mind further deteriorates and he loses himself in the delusion that he IS a hero, that he IS Daredevil. He assaults her in one of his delusional fits as she calls him sick. We do not know how far this actually went, but the implication is rape. She leaves him and goes to the Daily Bugle to sell her story, calling him out on his delusions, illness and making a point of calling him "not much of a man", with a sexual implication based on the reporters reaction. Either implying impotence, a small dick, or otherwise poor bedroom abilities. Which could be referential to him being unable to perform when he raped her.
Tumblr media
At some point, he turns up uninvited at the Kingpin's HQ to gloat over what he's done; now in his own costume. Turns out that he has only managed to make people believe that DD is doing Robin Hood like actions, enraging him and earning the Kingpin's scorn, who notes that Bullseye has do better to earn his appreciation. Bullseye runs off to do just that.
But, out on the streets, Lester's delusions oscillate between his intention of ruining Daredevil's reputation with crime and violence, and him convincing himself that he IS Daredevil and 'saving' people with lethal force. He is talking to himself about this confusion, about being Bullseye or Daredevil, hating him but that it's good being a hero, but it's better that people hate DD.
He seems to be in a highly manic state; impulsive, elated, pressured speech, easily distracted and irritated, highly risk-taking behavior, and slipping in and out of delusions about who he is and thinking that his plans are great and important even as its been proven that he's not thinking anything through. It seems to be implied that he barely sleeps, eats, or cleans himself, but that he does drink alcohol. There's little or no self-awareness during mania, and Lester is riding the wave hard.
This fits with later descriptions of him as bipolar, and adding identity related delusions into it paints a picture of what kind of spiral he's in. As Bipolar disorder can create experiences of confusion, contradiction, and self doubt which made it difficult to establish continuity in sense of self. Their lives are characterized by disruption and discontinuity and by external definitions of self based on their illness.
Meanwhile Matt has remembered himself after Kingpin ordered Bullseye to capture his friend and he fights to get her back, then vowing retribution on Bullseye. Matt investigates Lester's hideout, finding a murder board of news paper cutouts about DD /Bullseye with Lester's frantic delusional scribbling on them, mostly wishing death on DD. He comments that Bullseye doesn't care about money or women, after finding the woman's clothes there and unused cash and jewelry lying around. The latter shows off that Lester never bought anything or used the cash, it was just for the getting, equally so the woman.
As Matt and Lester confront each other they both speak as if they were the other, but also showing off their own insecurities, and both perversely enjoying the battle, encouraging it. There are self-loathing traits there too, he speaks that it's better than being 'that guy Bullseye' an later in his confrontation with DD, describes 'Bullseye' as a coward and that people hate him, that he deserved to get his bones broken and to be locked up. It ends in Matt winning, unmasking them and claiming that "they turned out to be the same man".
The entire run sets the precedence for Bullseye's manic delusions and identity issues, he's obviously unmedicated and in this run there is no attempt at excusing his behavior with a tumor, but rather it became the prime example of his mania and later diagnosis of bipolar disorder type 1. It also became a thing for him to later dress up as other heroes and to chafe at the experience or as was the case of Punisher MAX use it as a modus operandi of 'becoming' someone else in order to kill them.
Tumblr media
He's later in Dark Avengers set on e medical regime that seems to treat either Bipolar Disorder, schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder; especially dealing with psychotic traits such as delusions and hallucinations. There will also be depictions of him in depressive spirals with heavy suicidal ideation with shows again that he does get booth the highs and the lows of Bipolar.
After these issues, Bullseye doesn't show up until '94 in Punisher.

Day 7 and 8
Oooh boy yesterday was PACKED with history. I was like a kid in a candy store haha!
After class we were delayed getting out into the city as there was a bus strike going on. But eventually we made it out and traveled to the Ancient Agora. To get there, we walked along this adorable little street that was filled with vendors selling handmade jewelry and even tiny books! The road is named to this day what it was named 2500 years ago, Platía Thiséos. And yes, it is named for the ancient king Theseus. Anyways, we entered the Agora and our tour guide began by explaining the purpose of the city.
So while the Parthenon was the symbol of the city, and later the symbol of democracy, Agora was democracy in action. It was a city center, much like downtown Martinsburg, minus the residences. The city has multiple temples including the Temple of Hephaestus.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This temple is the only one from ancient Greece who's roof is still intact! It's a beautiful construction and honors the god who helped birth Athena. Because of this, two statues would've been inside: Hephaestus and Athena. On the inside of the roof, stones had been placed after it's construction to create a domed ceiling. This was installed during the Byzantine empire when Christians entered the city and converted all pagan buildings into churches.
A small corner of a temple for all of the Olympian gods is all that is left. A train borders the ancient city, and it was constructed, before the archaeology craze, in 1880. Because of this, the entire temple was lost. However, like the World Trade Center in NYC, it was the "point zero" of the town and all measurements of the city extended from this temple.
We got to see the very first shopping mall in the entire world! Across the way stands the modern recreation, since only the back wall survived the ages. The shopping mall had two stories and is now a museum! When it was discovered, John D. Rockefeller paid for the entire restoration.
Inside the museum, remnants of the invention of democracy are shown. Including small discs that are inscribed with different names. Whenever there was a concern that someone was trying to overthrow the democracy or trying to corrupt it, the assembly would right the name of the person of concern onto these discs, and whoever had the most votes would be exiled from Athens for ten years! It was the very first type of impeachment!
Tumblr media
Also shown, are tiny little shot glasses.
However,
Greeks didn't take shots of hard liquor. They actually refused to drink wine unless it was mixed with water, they thought it barbaric. So what was it for?
Hemlock.
Tumblr media
These were the glasses for which execution would be carried out. They were found in what is believed to be the prison and when tested, remnants of hemlock remained in the bottom. This theory is not only backed up by testing, but by the writings of Plato who described that Socrates was charged and executed for blasphemy for saying that the human nature is self-defined (basically, do some soul searching and use some logic.) Plato describes how Socrates was forced to drink Hemlock as punishment for his crime. So you're looking at, possibly, the last think Socrates ever held before his death.
After leaving the ancient city, we went for food and boy did I have the best potatoes I've ever eaten. The pizza was magnificent and the chef was sweet. It wasn't safe for me to eat the Baklava, so he brought out a different dessert for me, without us even asking for it. Although it looked like a burnt piece of tofu, it tasted wonderfully. It actually tasted like the middle of cannoli.
Yesterday I didn't do much, so I'm going to skip over it. Today's update will be up later tonight.
Things I've taken away from today:
I wanna live here. Like, seriously
I'm one of the only ones who could've kept going on that tour. I literally didn't know I was hungry until I got to the restaurant.
I did, in fact, choose the right major, wvu just doesn't have any classes on what I want to study
The greeks had a banging society (yknow, minus the misogyny and slavery)
I literally can't feel my feet anymore.

Sustainable Fashion: Innovators and Outliers
Fast fashion affects me because I cannot afford to go out and buy hand-crafted, ethically produced clothing, jewelry, accessories, etc. which makes me subject to shopping from fast fashion sites. I try to shop in moderation and only buy what I need or things I have been eyeing for several months but, of course, it is hard to avoid when you cannot afford an alternative. Another way fast fashion affects me is because I knit and having a slow hobby in which clothing pieces are ethically and slowly produced by hand has made me look at the entire industry differently. The fast fashion industry and their cheap prices have affected independent artists who get sneered at when they price their items correctly and they also use slave labor to produce crochet garments which can't be made through a machine.
Tumblr media
I honestly don't know any celebrities that are doing a lot to climate sustainability in the fashion sector. I know many celebrities now have clothing brands and some of them preach sustainability but I feel that the most they do is have eco-friendly packaging (usually recyclable, not even compostable) which is reasonably low effort considering these people are backed by investors and are wealthy themselves. I know that Gigi Hadid has a cashmere line that was advertised as being sustainable as well as "affordable" so that people can have high quality pieces in their closet and not have to rebuy. In my opinion, this brand and others like it are greenwashing because cashmere lines already exists and anyone who can afford Gigi's line can afford other cashmere whenever it goes on sale. The most sustainable thing she and other things could've done was not add to the amount of options and, instead, put her name on an already established brand to help bolster the name and encourage people to shop from a long-time sustainable business.
Tumblr media
I love the idea of bio-textiles and think, in a couple of years, they will be the automatic choice when it comes to making clothes and furniture pieces. I think that any faults of bio-textiles come from them not being used as much as fabrics like nylon and polyester but those kinks will get ironed out with time. I also think that there has been so much positive feedback to the bio-textiles that have been around for a long time such as cotton and bamboo that it is inevitable for them to only become more popular. They have such great properties as fabrics like breathability and being lightweight, and their value will only be emphasized the more we use them.
All of the more "out-there" textiles like apple mush and shrimp shells could also have a great place in high fashion, both by contributing to the concept and by using lesser-known, more unique textiles to help diversify their collections.
Tumblr media
"Companies have made shoes out of recycled materials like plastic and rubber tires to mitigate the effects of the 300 million pairs of shoes. thrown out every year."
I learned about the microplastics that are left behind with every step we take due to the rubber soles of our shoes being worn out against the pavement some years ago. There are not many shoe brands that use non-rubber soles since they are comfortable and perfect for walking, especially in more urban environments like NYC but knowing that fact has helped me carry on using my shoes for much longer and has inspired me to ship my shoes to recycling programs at the end of their lifespan so that they can become recycled material for new shoes.
"The fashion industry is one of the leaders in pollution, making up about 10% of carbon emissions. leaking into the environment."
I have stopped a lot of my shopping and try not to get too many items shipped to me precisely for this reason. I have had to realize that I own more clothes than I need and can not only make due but feel good in all of the clothes I already own. I also make a concerted effort to only re-sell or donate old clothes to limit the chances of them ending up in landfills.
"Avoid lycra, polyester, and nylon which are made from fossil fuel petrochemicals. They release microfibers into waterways during washing. Spot cleaning these fibers can mitigate the release of microfibers."
Since I started knitting and making some of my own clothes, I try to avoid textiles like acrylic at all costs since all of the other options are biodegradable and healthier for the earth and myself. This has also led me to learning about the various benefits of natural materials like how wool is anti-bacterial and fireproof while cotton is extremely absorbent which is part of what makes it a great warm-weather fiber.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Veja is a sustainably made shoe brand that is very transparent about their process which can be read about here: https://assets.teenvogue.com/photos/64774b88fbd90752ccccdab3/16:9/w_2560%2Cc_limit/VEJA%2520LEDE.jpg
