This is a bloody incredible series, and it hits even harder now that we've experienced a full blown pandemic. It's takes place in a world where we won a zombie apocalypse, but I describe it as: "It's about zombies the same way Animal Farm is about pigs."
Seanan McGuire AKA Mira Grant gives an overview of the series in this fantastic interview (from 2012):
The basic concept behind the Newsflesh trilogy is that in 2014 the Zombie Apocalypse happened, and it took us about three years, but around 2017, 2018, we actually managed to win. A lot of people died, a lot of land was permanently ceded, but we came out on top. So 20 years pass, and you have an entire generation of people that’s grown up in a world where zombies just are. They’re not something special. They’re not something exciting. They just are. And people go on, people do what they do.
It also includes gems like:
I would call [the CDC] back and say, “If I did this, this, this, this, this and this, could I raise the dead?” And every single time they would say, “No.” And I’d say, “OK,” hang up, and go back to working. After about the 17th time, I called and said, “If I did this, this, this, this, this, this and this, could I raise the dead?” And got, “Don’t … don’t do that.” And at that point, I knew I had a viable virus.

I wonder if the people working on Starsky and Hutch knew how much of an impact they would be making on the buddy cop genre. Many cop shows that came out after it had that S&H influence in them, though some might not have been as open/honest/loud about the intentions of the partnership(s) on their shows. But it’s kinda weird how these shows have kinda given me a new perspective on love stories or just love in general. I LATCHED onto these unconventional-ish relationships on screen, like I want to study them and take them apart and put them back together again 😭

been slowly making my thru the vc books and i can say now, with certainty that the show is in fact superior in almost every conceivable way. i think nostalgia was clouding my judgment but apart from iwtv and tvl and maaaybe qotd....these books are fucking ridiculous
#yaz reads#yaz has thoughts#interview with the vampire#not to be mean but as a body of work they have zero structural integrity#each book is a long meandering mess of the most outlandish plot and the most contrived workaround established canon to suit her whims#she hates women. like deeply.#there's a disconnect between the character she thinks shes writing versus what ends up on the page re david talbot#the interpersonal relationships bar a few like lestat and louis and lestat and gabrielle and nicky are laughable#coz they never stay consistent. its like she's afraid of anyone actually hating lestat#even armands hate is blunted coz he's in love with him#plot points and character arcs are dropped entirely between books for no discernable reason#look i maintain book 1 and 2 are modern masterpieces esp book 1#and book 3 is a fun romp#but the rest are wow some have nuggets of brilliance but are swallowed up the sheer absurdity of her plots .and i can do the absurd#i love the absurd but she treats it with such solemnity that it gets me out of the story again and again#there's obvs a huge following for the series as a whole and kudos to you who stuck by her but what was she on#when the plot is weak i can focus on the intra character drama and the characters are stale i can focus on the plot#when both are done abmysally!?#rolins and co had a great task ahead of them and i think they elevated the material#so good on them#and note this isnt me bashing her for her dark themes and subject matters i can handle all that and then some#vc is quite tame insofar as being dark for a gothic series#its everything else

i liked some of the changes that rick has made for the series but i dont think it was anything phenomenal in terms of the book
some of the changes really impacted me, like medusa explaining her history with athena and annabeth defending her mother only to be completely disregared by her when percy sent the head olympus
i liked how we see how much poseidon loved sally, how pained and sorrowful hermes was when luke was mentioned
i really liked how they included percys dreams and expanded a bit more on grovers narrative (and how he was more accurate to book grover as much as i love movie grover they completely erased his ambitions and goals)
however there were some parts that completely fell off for me like how they already knew they were going into medusas lair, and ares being comically evil felt too unserious at times.
also the reveal that luke was the betrayer kind of fell off for me because how did percy immediately put two and two together when the only thing that tipped him off was that clarisse was still at camp, i feel like they didn’t question much of anything until percy and luke were alone (the actual betrayal scene was great tho)
i feel like the changes wouldve been more impactful if it had a longer run time, i don’t necessarily blame rick because this could be disneys fault in wanting it to only be 8 episodes and theres only so much you can put in that many episodes :/
and these streaming services have been called out for not paying writers enough so i completely understand why the writing is complete shit at times and also how fucking dark scenes were like i could not see what the fuck was going on at times (i had this same problem with loki s2 too)
so i dont want to send rick any hate for the show because it could also be the fault of disney being lazy and greedy
casting was perfect like no questions i loved all the characters and the actors did there absolute best and it really shows!

John Levene makes a brief appearance as an unnamed military policeman (a lance corporal, per his stripe) in The Jensen Code (ATV, 1973).
Although shot and transmitted in colour, the series master tapes were wiped and it now exists as black and white copies, barring an incomplete and damaged print of episode six.

Hah, I was right. I knew I read that line before.
Found the whole Kevin Wright interview and yes, the part where he says that Loki cares about Mobius was mostly about Sylvie.
He talks about Loki/Sylvie, then says:
"Because he cares about her, because he cares about Mobius, more than anyone he's ever cared about."
Sentence starts at 6.12

just knocked myself out at 2am thinking about the h*nd h*lding in the hospital bed bc like. whew. whew. was the last time kinn had someone hold his hand this tenderly, huh
there’s no time or space for tenderness when you’ve got an intimidating reputation to maintain and guards to command and weapons to fire and money to count and people to kill. the most you might do is grab someone’s arm or wrist to yank them in front of you, or shake hands with someone over a deal that is just making your family richer and more dangerous. hands are for cold metal and rich velvet and hard cash but never for softness or warmth or closeness. and yes, perhaps kinn would pin someone’s hand to the mattress while fucking them, or twist their arms behind their back, or use his hands in all sorts of clever ways - but while that’s hot, and physically close, it’s not close like this, not in a comforting kind of way. we know he doesn’t cuddle with his twinks after he’s finished with them, he just sends them home and goes back to his whisky.
and then in the woods, when we see them hold hands for the first time, it’s an acknowledgement that okay - okay, we are stuck out here together, okay, i’m glad it’s you, okay, maybe we should start letting our walls down because it’s either that or we never get out of here. and then it’s easy to just not let go, to find comfort in that grip, and maybe a little thrill, just as their understandings of each other become something that brings them closer. the letting down of walls, the holding of hands, you get where i’m going
and so then, the hospital bed, porsche convinced to stay because kinn knows him now (and kinn feels comfortable enough to tease him about his fear of ghosts, something that he discovered with the skull in the woods), and kinn reinforcing that knowledge of what he needs by giving him the call to his brother, and porsche understanding that gift when he knows kinn wanted to give him his freedom, which he sacrificed for him by coming back - then, this hand hold. the way it’s porsche that initiates it, the gentle slide of his thumb over the family ring, kinn’s fingers tightening in return. it’s a thank you and a clear, unspoken sign of mutual comfort (and mutual feelings). and it’s so so so tender, and the cuddling that follows is equally so. so different from the violence and everyday powerplays that kinn is used to, and no agenda, no intention to take it anywhere further. just porsche, holding his hand, because he wants to, and because now he can. tenderness and closeness found in the place he never expected he would find them in return.

Also:
William Afton's ending in Five Nights at Freddy's> Xehanort's ending in Kingdom Hearts
Why am I making this comparison? Because the FNAF and KH franchises have quite a few things in common, and one of these things are just how similar their main series villains are.
I'll take William Afton's ghost, in his animatronic suite, being burnt alive as his old friend Henry Emily tells him the deepest part of Hell has opened up to welcome him, so don't keep the Devil waiting over Xehanort getting to pretty much go to Kingdom Hearts heaven with his best friend, who he'd murdered, after he had just murdered Kairi any day.
Both of these characters are child murderers, essentially (I say "essentially," because I know someone will argue that Xehanort leading Ven to the point where his heart was shattered, and he became comatose for a decade+--and would have been much worse off if Sora hadn't helped him--isn't actually murder. But this is a Disney series rated E10+. I imagine they can only do so much. Plus, when he was causing worlds to get blown up in KHI, I feel like those people were dead. And, no: the fact that Sora was able to bring these worlds--and the people--back at the end of the game doesn't make it better), and Xehanort deserved something akin to what William Afton got.
"Oh, but we've learned now that Xehanort had good intentions and he had a sad past."
I don't care! His "good intentions" excuse nothing with the actions he took to get there! And William Afton probably killed Henry Emily's daughter because he blamed him for his own son's death (so he also had a "sad past")... and while you may understand that logic, does it excuse that or anything else he's done? No.
