Father Mulcahy's glasses

He's hardly aware that he wears them any more. His glasses have framed his view of the world since he was eight and someone noticed he couldn't read the blackboard. He takes them off to sleep, to shower, and rarely ever otherwise. Sometimes he goes to sleep with them still on.

My second post, I would like to dedicate to reddit user u/Voice-of-Aeona. You see, this user is a moderator for a community that I won’t mention so I don’t inadvertently promote them. But I had an interesting exchange with the User who said my CRITIQUE REQUEST didn’t fit the community rules. The gist is this: I requested a critique after reading the community rules. The moderator messaged me and said "We have a 6,000 word max for critique.” Ok, so what is a critique?

cri·tique   a detailed analysis and assessment of something, especially a literary, philosophical, or political theory.

I realize my comments were baited and laced with sarcasm but I was genuinely amused by the conversation. What was even more delightful was the irony of the mod removing a post about a story where the characters have a false perception of reality! lol Bravo! At the end of the day, I realize that discussion and competition are vital to our own growth. When you have an aversion to having your views challenged and you default to this childish defense of “because I said so,” you’re really only hurting your own progress so....I hope that gets better for you.

What makes the exchange the most delightful is that I left after the mod removed my post. I had no intention in doing anything with that community again. But what was funny is that after I left the community, the mod sent their last message. So what’s the big deal about that last message? Well this communication is a form of comment that we are “posting” and when you ban someone, it prevents that user from “posting.”--essentially the ban was childish because it prevented me from replying to them so that they could have the last word. Bravo! You did it! Or did you?

As I said, this blog is influenced (albeit negatively) by that mod and the 2nd post is dedicated to them. If I wasn’t banned and this post was just a reply to that mod--I could simply close with saying, “Your move.”

but tragically, due to the ban and all, we can’t really have that conversation on your playground. You know, that place where your misinterpretation of words and reality can be imposed and forced on others and if they don’t agree, you can just ban them?...Well we’re not there so I’m sort of at a loss for words given that you can’t censor this medium--Oh wait, I got it:

P.S. I also captured the published rules so if they change them and then insinuate that this post has no merit---well, we’ll just cross that bridge if we come to it. I did offer the suggestion so that they could update their rules though so I hope they do fix that issue.

Duality Dissonance Chapter 2: 5100 words of 62,000 (thus far)

Hello all you wonderful people!

I've been going pretty hard at it lately and I think a lot of great stuff has been happening betwixt my fingers and the keyboard :) I posted a loose first chapter a little while back and asked for some feedback which was all great. I made the adjustments, addressing the suggestions and then carried those suggestions through the rest of my writing...so yeah, that took a while.

But, I'm now looking for feedback on my second chapter to see if there are any reoccurring issues that I haven't resolved. I still expect some minor grammar errors and one of my main struggles is tense shifting. Please feel free to point out if there is any tense shifting that seems out of place or distracting. My main focus for this critique though is character and story. How does the story feel for you? Are the characters relatable? What about the stakes for their task? Do the scenes and actions come across clearly? Is there anything that you have a hard time following?

I am hoping to receive constructive criticism. I am grateful for any kind words that I receive but I ultimately know that the story can only get better by hearing what I'm doing wrong versus what I'm doing right. So please, don't feel reluctant to tell me something you think could be done better! Chapter 1 is also in the document but I'm wanting the critique to be about Chapter 2. A little about the story to see if it would interest you:

Duality Dissonance. It's a low fantasy which will probably be upmarket fiction. It's an adventure intertwined with some elements of psychological trauma. It follows EV (Envy) who gets drawn into a conflict alongside the other sins. They're all winged-warrior types and have set out to save what is left of their post-apocalyptic type world. Ultimately, the group has a falling out because there is a difference in opinion on what is actually saving it vs what is harming it. EV tries to discover their world's past as his former friends become his adversaries. EV may not understand everything about their world but he ultimately decides to stand up for what he does believe, even as it places the former friends across from him.

Or is all that thinking "annoying" and it "stops ~innovation~"

It feels like a constant uphill battle just to get Americans to think further than one goddamn year into the future. How will this be maintained? How will you fix it, keep it running, how can OTHERS fix and maintain it after you're gone? How will this road look in 10 years? How will this website function in five years? Why are we designing this war machine we claim we have no use for because we're "not at war", after all?
