After I painted the butterfly fairy - if you haven't seen that one, it's the post right before this one :P - I really felt like I wanted to spend more time with those beautiful colors and shapes that the wings carried. It's very rare for me to be so attracted to such opaque and solid abstract shapes, usually I prefer working loose but with as much contrast as possible as my beginner arms can carry. Sometimes I do wonder if I'm not missing on an opportunity to create patterns and/or play with watercolor more freely, but then I watch the pigment disperse in water and suddenly all my desire to work with clean cut shapes dissipates and I fall back in love with the magic of watercolor. I do imagine myself trying less transparent mediums in the future, things like gouache or pastels really draw me in, but for the moment I want to continue with this medium. Partly because I want to see how far along I can make it, partly because another medium means another small financial investment which is not something I am willing to go for at the moment. Anyway, these were my thoughts as I was working on this piece. Are you An Artist Level 1?

Creative people spent more time to discover their own identity or a niche that they seem specialized from only one thing that only they can do it. It's not easy and really confusing. So a lot of them including myself just stop and procrastinating. Fearing that you might wasted your time figuring it out and it's hard when you have lots of things in your plate to choose from. If you are a perfectionist, then it would take an extra effort to control your mentality.

How would you survive in this phase? It's very simple actually when i discover this trick that i hope i learned this earlier before i wasted so much opportunity. Is that take one step at a time. You don't have to hurry. Acknowledge and listen to yourself how you actually do your stuff. Everyone is different. Being a slow learner isn't your flaw yet it's how you really are from being cautious and detailed so you can really digest those new information. We can step up, even if it takes some time. Like they said, you can't compare your level 2 progress to their level 10.
