Excelsior, Slauson Malone 1 (2023)
With Excelsior Slauson Malone 1 (certainly not to be referred as simply Slauson Malone) sounds like he’s taken a long, winding and pretentious road only to end up sounding like a less complete, less distinct and, frankly, less interesting King Krule. Not unlike his father, SM1’s artistic innovations appear near totally superficial, his intentions borderline reactionary.

thoughts on slauson malone 1 - excelsior
If presently the means by which to render the ideal and its stratification have succeeded the discrepancies between the two, why then are so many still seeking analog salvation via some ersatz truth of old? If “21st-century culture is marked by…anachronism and inertia,” (Fisher, 2014) maybe that anachronism is in part precipitated by the pre-cataclysmic, future-shocked concernments of the post-structuralist era that have lodged themselves somewhere between the media studies workshop and the post-workshop bacchanal. Before tech got pervy, there was a palpable sense of awe in the mid-20th-century from programming bellwethers (Raymond Scott, Suzanne Ciani, Hiroshi Yoshimura, Jean-Jacques Perrey, Wendy Carlos) and neoteric savants who synthesized their excellence into a now charmingly gauche package. EXCELSIOR similarly revels in the mutilation of its avant-hypotheticals, liquid-jazz-post-hyper-folk proxies for to sate Slauson Malone 1’s destructive, posthuman urges. EXCELSIOR is a supraliminal technosphere, where digital audio is subject to the laws of nature, and organic phenomena itself is being decoded by one very misaligned AI software of Malone’s devising. For a student of Fisher’s, this one reads like Bostrom to me.

2023年 ベスト・アルバム
シーンに与えた影響や批評的評価は一切考慮せず、私がよく聞いた／今後も愛聴するであろうアルバムです。故に、18作品と半端な数になりました。
以下、リリース日順です！
2/1 Gezan with Million Wish Collective『あのち』
レベルミュージックかくあるべし。大勢で声を重ねて、トライバルなビートを打ち鳴らす、意志のある祝祭。間違いなくこれから先も、タガの外れた世界を生きる糧になり続けるし、聴くたびに2023年の空気を思い出すはず。
3/3 Kate NV『Wow』
子供向け番組を改めて見るとぶっ飛んでてヤバかったりするけど、その質感に近い。どんな音が飛び出てくるのか予想がつかない摩訶不思議サウンド。めちゃくちゃエクスペリメンタルだけど、キュートでポップ。Kate NVは、別プロジェクトのDecisive Pinkも良かった。
3/21 Summer Eye『大吉』
宅録的なローファイ感で鳴る折衷サウンドと、生活感ある日本語の響きの掛け合わせは、日本のインディミュージックにおける一つの到達点のはず。今年の夏、たくさん聴いたアルバムでした。抜群にフレッシュ！
3/31 London Brew『London Brew』
宇宙的で超攻撃的なサウンドで飛びます。トリビュート元の『Bitches Brew』楽曲の形式的な要素はあまり感じず、精神性を今に継いでいるなと。88分、一瞬たりとも気が抜けない、激烈で壮大な熱演。
4/7 Jana Horn『The Window is the Dream』
気の抜けた歌声と、絶妙なソングライティングが良い。程よくダウナーで、春先の気分にピッタリでよく聞いた。特段素晴らしいものはないんだけど、なんだかとても肌に合った一枚。
4/21 Pearl & The Oysters『Coast 2 Coast』
ジャケ写通り、どこかノスタルジックかつちょっぴりサイケ&トロピカルで心地良い。月ミルでの来日公演もとてもよかったです。逃避行にうってつけ。
4/28 Nabihah Iqbal『Dreamer』
ローファイなエレクトロと、インディロックのナイスな融合。メランコリックかつ優しい質感が沁みる。M6《Gentle Heart》は私的2023ベストトラックの一つです。
5/19 Mandy, Indiana『I’ve Seen a Way』
ノイズ／インダストリアル由来の不穏さと、クラブミュージック的でアッパーなダンスビート。洞窟やショッピングモールでの録音等、ラディカルなアイデア満載な上に、ポップさがしっかりあるのも凄い。個人的には今一番ライブが見たいバンド。来日祈願！
5/26 Warter From Your Eyes『Everyone's Crushed』
ユーモラスかつ軽やかに最前衛を開拓してみせた一枚。今年聞いたアルバムの中で、一番強烈なオリジナリティを感じた。未知のサウンドの連続に、強烈な酩酊感を覚える。プロダクションは超独特だけど、一般的な楽曲フォーマットからは逸脱しすぎないのが肝であり、凄さなのかも。
6/9 King Krule『Space Heavy』
私、キング・クルールが大好きなので、新作が出たらたくさん聴きます。重く沈み込んだサウンドの先に、暖かさや軽やかさが滲み出ていて、なんとも「成熟」とはこういうことか、と。来日公演を待っています。
8/11 BBBBBBB『Positive Violence』
爆音で聴く→ハマる人はハマる。それだけな気もする。私は、どハマりして、出勤前の喫煙所で耳鳴りがするくらいの大音量イヤホンでよく聴きました。初めてボアダムスの1stを聴いた時の血管が切れるようなブチ上がり方を思い出したりも。ライブには泣けるものがありました。
8/25 Willie J Healey『Bunny』
相変わらずのレイドバックしたサウンドがとても心地よい。リズムボックスの鳴りが印象的で、ソウルへの接近も感じた。なんだかんだで、結局こういうのが一番好きかも。
9/22 Yuele『Softscars』
これは泣ける。オルタナ／シューゲイザー・サウンドを「使って」何かをすることの現代性。ロックにおいて特権的な地位を持つギターという楽器が、いかに感情表現に長けているのかも改めて認識させられた。次はどう出るのか、今からとても楽しみ。
10/6 Sam Wilkes『Driving』
まさかのインディロック！ 伸びやかで煌びやかなサウンドが秋晴れによくあった。いつだって、サム・ウィルクスの作品からは、音楽の楽しさ／喜びを感じられて胸が熱くなる。FRUE含めて来日公演もとても素晴らしかったです。Grateful Deadオマージュ（？）なジャケ写も良。
10/6 Slauson Malone 1『Excelsior』
アルバム全体の構成が素晴らしく、映画を見るような心持ちで最初から最後まで通して聴くことが多かった。強かな実験精神が可能にした鈍色の桃源郷。
10/20 Sampha『Lahai』
これも泣ける。ドラムという楽器が持つ根源的な力を今の時代のやり方で引き出しているように感じた。アグレッシブだけど、どこまでも柔らかな仕上がりが印象的。あと、単にトラックの作り込み具合も凄いなと。
11/10 Niecy Blues『Exit Simulation』
霊性に満ちていて、なおかつリラックスした雰囲気のアンビエントR&B。各楽器の配置や乱反射、ビートの切り替えも素晴らしく、構成がとても良い。デビュー作とのことで、これから先がとても楽しみ。
11/16 Daniel Bachman『When The Roses Come Again』
狂おしいほどに幽玄。有機的な電子音のドローン上を、キラキラと彩るバンジョーとギター。時間の流れがゆっくりと停止していくような、徐々に自然へと溶け込んでいくような……。崇高な体験。
