OH they finally came out and ran the fiber to the house last week!!! now i’m just waiting on one more- #-guy to come and finish the interior install and the long awaited fast internet will finally be mine eheheheheeeee #now i can feel my hours upon hours of unedited gameplay footage breathing down my neck :) #man i’ve got so much stuff piled up right now. i’m drowning in Tasks and it’s a lil overwhelming but i’ll handle it all! eventually #uhhhhm my current writing project is coming along well! i’ve never put so much time and effort into a oneshot before in my life #its a labor of love though and i think i’m gonna be really proud of myself (and the fic) once it’s complete #even if no one reads it bc it’s so goddamn self indulgent and kinda lowkey throws canon out the window but like. fuck it! #if i want Astarion to write a song on piano and perform it for me while mentally taking me on a trip down memory lane. then so be it #fr though i’ve never written anything quite like this and i rlly want to do it justice. even if its unrealistic i still want it to be Good #in other news i received word that one of the chickens i sponsor at my local Gentle Barn has passed away so i had a lil cry abt that #i feel so bad for his little tiny chicken wife. they obviously loved each other and it’s like. so sad when one half of an old couple dies #like. she pulled him out of his depression after his 1st wife died. now who’s gonna be there to pull Her out… #anyways let’s not get all sad about that again. in happier news my cat who i presumed died/got killed has returned home uninjured!!! #after that huge stray dog chased her into the woods i thought we’d never find or see her again #but then the morning after i started grieving her she showed back up hungry as hell yet completely unharmed like the enigma that she is #so that’s one definite highlight from earlier this month. uhh what else. rapid fire summary of the past few weeks let’s go- #Jersey turned 10! recently I've been feeling like there's been a real rut in my art and that I've hit a plateau. so out of pure boredom I gathered up all of my physical sketchbooks I could find (12) and I decided to look at the very first one which coincidentally I also did when I was...12 years old. and looking at it and comparing it to my recent art it made me feel so much better about the plateau I've found myself in. eventually there will be a time when I look back on the art I've created now and say yeah I have improved so it brings me a bit of relief

I love this picture bc A) it’s proof that there was a period of time when I did silly things like present seminars and B) it was like the last day of normalcy for a VERY long time. As I was gearing up to give this talk our department head runs in and announces that the first Covid patient had arrived at the hospital we were at. People immediately got up to leave and I tried not to take it personally. Our department head said that starting tomorrow we would be expected to remain home until further notice. To the remaining audience he said “This will be the last in person seminar until things cool down,” and turning to me he said “Let’s make sure it’s a good one!” “No pressure,” I replied.

This picture is from the end of my talk, so it’s the last slide the good people of my department saw before we all went into lockdown and damn if I’m not a little proud of that 🤭

my tablet is currently halfway across the country for repairs (my brother's the most tech-savvy in my family and asking him to take a look at it was cheaper than taking it to a shop) so i haven't been able to draw lately. i've made a bunch of traditional sketches in the meantime, but none of them are presentable enough to post here, so i decided to take a trip down memory lane and fill out one of foxorian's influence maps!

below the cut are the names of the artists featured here, as well as a little bit of director's commentary on how they've influenced me :]

yugo limbo (website, tumblr, twitter) - some time last year, i realized something profoundly unnerving: i actually... don't like the art in smile for me's original release all that much? that's not to say it's bad, just that there isn't a whole lot about it outside of maybe its architecture that stands out to me. which is REALLY WEIRD, considering i wrote a whole retrospective about how much this game means to me. art-wise, however, it was only after smile for me's release that yugo limbo's art evolved in a way that really resonated with me; i love how textured everything is, i love the way they simplify clothing folds and the way that skin wrinkles around the joints, i love their love for puppets; all of those things ended up worming their way into my art style and tastes one way or another, and i couldn't be happier!! it didn't feel right to leave smile for me out of the equation entirely, though, so i chose a piece that was both related to that game and that i felt reflected a lot of what i love about yugo's more recent art.

echobsilly (twitter, tumblr) - oh god, speaking of yugo limbo - god. i fucking love echo's art so much i have no idea how to even do it justice in writing. like many people i first found him through his smile for me/limbolane fanart and animations - and those are some of his best work, don't get me wrong, but i really wanted to include one of his original designs to make a point that he's just fuckin great at art in general. character design, facial expressions, body language, composition, LIGHTING... he makes it all just. so so so gorgeous. i always liked "painterly" art styles for lack of a better word, but i think his art is what first pushed me to embrace that more in my digital art. i also like how he talks about dr. habit like he's his dead wife. i'm very proud to call him a friend these days :]

japhers (tumblr, twitter, instagram) - i first found japhers' art in high school and he very quickly became a HUUUUUGE influence on my taste in character and costume design. one of the big reasons i never fully bought into the idea that men's fashion is inherently harder to design is bc so much of his art is already dedicated to exploring fashion Without the restrictions of a gender binary in place which is to say that he's really good at drawing buff dudes in frilly outfits. i also think he gave me more confidence to draw more intricate costumes without having to worry about super dainty and clean lineart, bc a lot of his art looks like it's kinda been carved/rendered out of sketches, and it is Gorgeous.

moe suppe (website, tumblr, cohost) - another artist i found in high school, albeit originally from a long-gone instagram account. his art is what kickstarted my desire to have some Roughness in my art, some Texture. it may not have stuck to my lineart, but it Definitely stuck to my rendering. it helped that i was going through a pretty big angel/demon phase at the time, which meant i was pretty immediately drawn in by his delightfully weird worldbuilding. i should probably read fear not now that it's an actual serial...

val wise (website, itch.io, twitter, instagram) - a more recent influence, but a pretty significant one nonetheless. i featured the cover of délicatesse here because it was the first thing from him that i had ever read, but in general his grasp on the human body really blows me away given how deceptively simple his style looks at first glance, especially his faces. the way fat and hair sits on her bodies, and how much it varies from character to character... it's beautiful without being So glamorous that it feels untouchable. his costume design is also great. i recommend his comics for low fantasy/ursula k. le guin fans who are Dying to see more fat characters in leading roles. i also just found out that i am of two hearts is free on itch.io, so i'll be treating myself to that over spring break.

partycoffin (tumblr, twitter) - if you have known me for any amount of time at all then this should not come as a surprise to you. i actually wasn't going to include partycoffin in this map at first, because while welcome home has inspired me in Many creative pursuits, i didn't think visual art was one of them? i definitely picked up some of clown's love for dramatic lighting and thinner lines with just a smidge of well-placed hatching subconsciously, though.

ryoko kui - probably the most recent artist featured here? anyways i have a confession to make: i have yet to read dungeon meshi. i just know that when i saw a post compiling a bunch of ryoko kui's sketches from her daydream hour series, i was so overwhelmed with this feeling of, like… "oh, yeah, these capture almost everything i love about women as flesh and blood people. when i draw women this is the kind of beauty that i want people to see in them." of course, ryoko kui is a great character designer in general, but something about her women specifically really speak to me. the earthier color palettes and rendering also do a lot to endear her art to me.

shuzo oshimi - specifically his art in blood on the tracks. something that really stood out to me in that series was whenever the shadows would get really intense, and you'd get these big blocks of black with just the faintest bit of hatching to soften out some of their edges. it was always very effective in creating this sense of claustrophobia. i really want to keep incorporating that in my more intense pieces!

person918x (tumblr, instagram) - i don't work with 3d art often and i don't see myself doing so any time soon, but the composition of person918x's pieces is something i take a lot of inspiration of. i also love his sequential art, as someone who does a lot of dream journaling it's sick to see the exact Vibe of a dream be put to (digital) canvas. i also firmly believe that he's one of the only people out there who knows what he's doing when it comes to using generative AI in art.

oops i made this list too long so now i have to put the last two artists in a new block.

10. meatgiri (twitter, instagram) - definitely the artist i've known about the longest out of this selection. i think i've been following her since…. oh god. since i was in middle school. way before she was meatgiri, even. i think her influence probably shows up the least in my art, but there are definitely some characteristics that stuck with me for a very long time (the lil block of black accompanied by one or two lines for shading on the neck, the looser lineart making it really easy to incorporate soft curves and sharp edges, the Eyes, etc etc.) i chose this drawing of her oc juniper bc i thought it was both reflective of her current art And a good embodiment of a lot of things i wanted to emulate from her art as a young'un.

11. dragan bibin (website, instagram) - specifically his 'deimos' series. much like with person918x, it's his compositions that really stand out to me the most, and you probably know by now that i'm a sucker for high contrast. i find it interesting though that he uses high contrast to obscure more than he does to highlight... helps a lot with giving the deimos paintings that air of Quiet Unease. another thing i want to incorporate in my horror-adjacent art! manmade environments gone wrong!

3. What’s your favorite fic that you’ve written?

Ohhh I love all of my fics I truly do ;-; that being said though it would be illegal if i didnt say True Vengeance given that. Ive spent two and a half years so far writing it and i think about it Literally every day LMAO. “Favorite” simply does not encompass everything i feel about it ;_;

14. If you could see one of your fics adapted into a visual medium, such as comic or film, which fan fic would you pick?

Also True Vengeance !!! It would make the movie ever djdjdjdkdk. Okay for reals though, I do have like some half baked thoughts about doing a comic version of it (mostly as a long term way to improve my drawing skills) so. Who knows..?? Keep an eye out maybe. In like a few years xjxjdjdk.

15. How do you come up with titles for your fics/chapters?

Ooohh so some of them are really important and i know them incredibly well in advance. Sometimes im just like “eh yeah thats good enough.” I generally enjoy it when my titles (fic or chapter) have more than one meaning… thats good shit right there. I do have a certain chapter title scheme for my victor exchange fics, which is fun (its just a relevant noun for each but it looks cool trust me).

My fic titles generally just come to me in a burst of insight and im like ok yeah. Thats it right there, and i just Know. Sorry if thats like. Not helpful 😭 ik when i was picking my title for True Vengeance I certainly did not have as much of the story thought out as it is now so. It ended up working out really neatly (also its vague enough that i could work with it xkdkdk)

18. What’s one of your favorite lines you’ve written in a fic?

There Have been times where ive upset myself negatively though and. Do not recommend !!! Be careful out there kids ;-; i will say though, sometimes it can be a really good experience to work through something via writing, but still its beneficial to be cautious and take care of yourself♥️

A trip down Memory Lane

When I was a teenager, many of the younger students I taught English to always came up with the proverbial question: "How did you learn to write and speak English so well?". You see, Italy dubs its movies and TV shows; it's only been in recent times that younger folks (specifically millennials and Gen Z) are willing to watch TV shows, dramas, movies, and play games with English subtitles. But when I was a teenager in Southern Italy, foreign language acquisition was not a big thing (yet). Nor was the teaching. So my answer to those sweet summer children was: "Well, I've been travelling a lot and attending lots of English courses (which was true), and I've been watching Harry Potter and reading Shakespeare and Milton and Nietzsche in English and I like playing games that haven't been translated, and I've watched TV shows with subtitles and animes with Eng sub" which was, ofc, all true. But my biggest, first motivator was that I was so deep into the Thorki fandom that I wanted to read all their works on AO3 - but they were all in English! No Italian stories! What was I supposed to do!! I wanted to read those stories!! I was so adamant and so curious that I would've sold my right kidney to read good quality gay porn fanfiction so I kept reading and reading without any dictionaries bc I didn't care, I was too lazy to look up the words unless they were very hard and/or crucial to the sentence at hand. And as I read and persevered, I started understanding more and more the meaning of words by context (and that is why I can't translate many English words into Italian because I have no idea what their Italian counterpart is). And then I went on to read more gay porn fanfiction stories as I got sucked into other fandoms and the language became easier and easier Then I joined Tumblr (ofc). At the same time, I also started writing poems and stories and then started reading more "classical" literature in its original language, like Bronte, Auden, Lawrence etc. Then I went on to live abroad in four different countries and was forced to speak English to the people and my speaking skills improved. I am now watching Kdramas and Thai dramas a lot and I can tell what some words mean even if I don't speak the languages because I *love* passive learning and pretending that "Shibaloma" is a word I completely understand And this is how it takes you 10+ years to learn a language with minimal effort TL;DR: gay porn fanfiction was my first motivator in learning English and that is why all the authors deserve a million Nobel Prizes What I mean to say is, I love learning and studying new languages. I think people should never, ever stop learning. But sometimes we forget that passive learning is as important as active learning. In this crazy world, our minds need rest sometimes, and media sources provide us with that sort of relief and comfort, while also helping us broaden our horizons and reminding us that skill-building doesn't only come from hard work; it also comes from fun and downtime and relaxing. Small tip: if you don't have Grammarly installed in your browser, DEFINITELY get it! It's a lifesaver for me when it comes to fixing minor mistakes and errors. It's not perfect, but it's a good tool for fanfiction writers; it really helps with email-writing, CV building, etc. I highly recommend it <3 (This is ofc not a paid promotion. Nobody pays me).

🍦 what's the sweetest fic you've created so far?

the swEETEST?! PI ARE WE THINKING OF THE SAME FIC-WRITER HERE?!!?! im fairly certain i've never written anything sweeter than the shells of toxic wastes (or a bag of lemons) in my life. and as someone who loves both toxic waste shells and lemons, probably this sewis fic.

you've literally asked me to big myself up which is the one thing i give everyone grief over bc i do it so much (always unironically ofc) but it's like that whole 'what's your favorite color? Celebrating 20 years of beers Fernie Brewing releases the "20th Anni FBC Retro Pack".

To  celebrate the big 2-0, they’ve had an action-packed year, from a 20th Anni Exhibit in their gallery room, to celebratory  merch pieces; the launch of their new LOGO non-alc brand in June, to a special 20th Anni Trail to Ale Challenge this past  summer; and social giveaways galore, to several key community fundraising collabs. Needless to say, it’s been a busy  year and it’s not over yet. But for now, they’ve gone a little retro.  Dropping last week in their Tasting Room, before heading out to craft-centric liquor stores throughout BC and Alberta this  week, their 20th Anni FBC Retro Pack has brought back some age-old favourites from the past 20 years of FBC beers.  Paying homage to FBC’s history, the Retro Pack contains 4 classic FBC brews, each can design hailing from a different  era. But with all the past brews available to choose from, how did they land upon this line-up? An FBC staff vote, of  course. So, take a trip down memory lane, revisit these nostalgic brews in their old-school designs, then head to your  closest liquor store to grab one before they’re gone.  The Griz Pale Ale. 5% ABV.  FBC’s very first brew in early 2003. From mountain peaks   to river valleys, The Griz was a perfect partner to   venturing into the great outdoors. With a light malt colour,   this refreshing ale uses dry-hopping to give it a distinctive   hop aroma and bitterness, classic to the style. The Griz   eventually retired, making way for the more on-trend, now   multi award-winning, Campout West Coast Pale Ale.  Rocky Mountain Genuine Lager. 5% ABV.   A year later, their continental-style Lager arrived in the fall   of 2004, featuring the finest European and New Zealand   hops and a mixture of European and Canadian malts.   With peaks of flavour built in a longer aging process, this   golden Lager starts and finishes with high mountain clarity   and smoothness. Rocky Mountain Genuine Lager stepped   down when their now flagship P9 Pils rolled into the   limelight and never looked back.  Lone Wolf IPA. 6.5% ABV.  FBC’s first-ever IPA hopped into their lineup in 2012. This IPA has four select malts in combination with three classic hop  varieties and time-honoured traditional brewing methods, including dry-hopping, resulting in a golden ale with exceptional  flavour and complexity. A true West Coast classic IPA in every sense and a fan favourite. After a great run, Lone Wolf  headed back to his pack, to be replaced by Thunder Meadows.  Rusty Tractor Weizenbock. 7.5% ABV.  A spring seasonal first launched back in 2013. Paying homage to those who’ve endured long, harsh Canadian winters,  Rusty Tractor is brewed with wheat, German specialty malts, noble hops, and Belgian yeast. The resulting Weizenbock  beer is rich, robust, and malty with surprising complexity. Short-lived, but never forgotten.  A limited release Tall Can 8-Pack, available shortly in craft-centric stores throughout BC and Alberta. F1 Re-Watch 2013: Round 8 - Great Britain

I race I did watch live at the time... but had to watch a recording of it bc I fell asleep as I'd gotten back from a school trip the day before.

Anyway, my main memory of this race is all the very bad and very dramatic tyre failures which... big yikes. Seb also retired with some kind of mechanical failure which meant that Rosberg won. But apart from that I don't remember much else, so let's get into it and hope it's not completely awful 😵‍💫

Ah Silverstone, my forever beloved 💚

Okay starting grid: Merc 1-2 with Lewis on pole (spoiler alert: he's one of the drivers who has a tyre blowout :(), Seb P3, Dan P5 holy shit, Jenson P10 and Jev P12.

Helmet watch: I can't quite tell but it looks like Seb has pictures of all the RBR team on his helmet which is adorable

[Formation Lap]: Mediums and Hards are the tyres for this race.

cut to the stampede of mechanics and engineers trying to get back to the garages.

[Start/Lap 1]: Lewis shooting off at the start and Seb taking P2, I LOVE THIS SONG

[Lap 2]: Lewis with an 8 tenths lead already, that's why they named the start-finish straight after him

Meanwhile Sutil is in P4. Team Silverstone once again be Team Silverstone-ing, at Silverstone

[Lap 5]: Lewis up to 2 seconds ahead of Seb, he's goating folks

The way that I know the tyre failures are coming but I have no idea on which laps they happen, it's like a really aggressive jack in the box.

(iirc Lewis, Jev and Checo were the affected drivers)

[Lap 6]: So yeah I'm just going to enjoy the Sewis 1-2 while it lasts 😭

[Lap 7]: Not Jenson complaining of his tyres overheating already, he's on the hards 😭😭😭

And Perez just got past him

and cut to Webber's busted front wing, man announced his retirement that weekend and someone decided to beat him up at the start as a send off

Oh jeez it was Massa that was the second left rear failure

[Lap 11]: cut to someone from Pirelli watching Massa's stop in the pit lane dbuhsfubh

[Lap 12]: Unsurprisingly, a load of cars have made their first stops

And a Grosjean fastest lap, because why not

This race is legit the reason why I get anxiety every time I see one tyre failure bc my mind instantly goes back to the mess that was this race

And honestly this race still pisses me off bc all the drivers were told to stay off the kerbs, but maybe Pirelli should have made better tyres in the first place

I can very easily see why I only remember the tyre failures from this race bc the replays of all the incidents are not fun

[Lap 31]: oh shit Rosberg is 1.5 seconds faster than Seb???

don't tell me the DNF is coming sooner rather than later

I mean, I know it's coming, but still. This race has been too much.

It's okay bud you win the race a year later and do very iconic things you're all good

At this point I just want everyone (excluding Seb's incoming DNF) to make it to the end of the race with all four tyres on their cars 😭

My god, those last 10-ish laps combined with everything that happened beforehand... I need a lie down. Pirelli will be meeting my fists and paying my emotional damages even though it's been 10 years since the race.

Headcanon: Katherine has an old as balls little journal where she keeps a list of songs/music pieces that remind her of the good times she had with Stefan. Maybe she even learned to play the old ones on the piano for the occasional trip down the memory lane. Makes herself cry and afterwards drinks while dancing to happy music to shake it all off. Ready for the game again.

ok but for REAL I already have a headcanon about her relationship with music and how important it is to her and minus the journal this is actual part of it bc music is the one thing Klaus cant take from her. Even if she has to leave everything behind music stays in her head and her heart and so she actually relates a LOT of things and memories in her life to music.

While shes not classically trained Katherine is strangely adept at teaching herself songs by ear in the piano and there is one piece that has always reminded her of Stefan because of its beautiful complexities, and how rich its melodies are in that they some how sound sad and happy all at the same time. It was the second song Katherine ever taught herself to play in full and she can't listen to it all the way through without crying.

While the song was recently composed (1978) she feels like she's always heard it in her heart when she looks at him, and that's what hits her the hardest. To her that song is Stefan as sheet music. Or maybe its the way she loves him written in sounds she couldn't otherwise express herself.

Either way, music has always been important to Katherine/Katerina, it's a language that speaks to and for her when other attempts just don't manage. You can always tell her mood by what shes listening to. She's not that hard to figure out if you know what to look for.

I’ve been watching and rewatching and watching again the first Scary Movie.

It’s crazy bc it’s like when that movie first came out it was just funny for the time period, but now looking back and comparing it to more recent parody/comedy films, I look back with nostalgia bc that movie really is a classic.

Movies aren’t funny or entertaining anymore. If I’m watching a movie it’s for a distraction or for white noise.

When movies like Scary Movie came out in theaters, even Little Man, I felt like every movie was like a minute long. Nowadays I’m just so bored with these movies that I always feel I’ve wasted my time.

It’s crazy looking back and realizing that those were actually the good days of creating. And you never realize till you take a trip down memory lane.

For comedy movies at least, they ended with the Wayans tbh. Ain’t no movie been revolutionary without needing $100billion to make it interesting.

There’s a disconnect somewhere in the art world.

Quick rant on comedy films but check out BURN on Hulu if you have it. That’s a quality film/story/acting (from the main character at least) without needing CGI or 100 editors to make it entertaining.

Also Triangle of Sadness was truly a good story as well. It’s on Hulu also
