Let's go back in time, Lovelies, to 2012. I had just mainlined The Hunger Games series for the first time (and the second, then the third) and had never read a fanfic. I barely knew what they were.

So I read my first fic. My First Date with Katniss Everdeen

It was unputdownable. (Is that a word? It should be a word.)

Anyway, I remember reading Mockingjay and being struck by the gap between when Katniss goes back to 12 and when Peeta returns. Where was Peeta? WHERE WAS HE? I became a bit obsessed.

Moving On was born. It's a short 33K fic that attempts to answer this question. Told from Peeta's point of view, the goal was to get the reader up close and personal with the action in the Capitol.

The Blurb: What happens to Peeta while Katniss is awaiting trial at the end of Mockingjay? How does he put himself back together? How does he end up back in District 12? Takes place before the Epilogue. Rating is T. May move to M due to some hijacking memories.

Almost immediately after finishing that, I started writing another. Building the Dream was meant to be my own sort of Empire Strikes Back. It's told in third person and it actually covers some of the same events of Moving On.

The Blurb: Dr. Aurelius treats Peeta and brings him back to himself at the end of Mockingjay. How does that happen? What role does President Paylor have in making sure Peeta can become whole without Plutarch using him as a piece in a new game? Rated T due to descriptions of Peeta's treatment by the Capitol post Quarter Quell.

What I loved about these stories:

They got me started on writing.

They were in-universe, canon. At the time that's what I loved to read.

There's no sex. (more on sex scenes much, much later.)

Both of these are *character first*. That's how I write all of my stuff and it's translated into my originals as well. I want to write characters that I want to read.

I loved Building the Dream because it really helped me develop an older love interest. Also, I'm especially proud of a few of the battle scenes.

What was hard:

I don't read a lot of political stuff, so the politics was hard. I remember talking to @randomnoteforfuturereference for hours over some of the things he thought would happen as a result of the events of Mockingjay.

It's meant to be a trilogy. I never wrote the third installment and that really bothers me.

I don't know why I never put either of these on AO3. I remember getting roasted horribly for a canon description mistake in Moving On, pulling it, correcting it, and then like, curling up and sucking my thumb for days. Clearly, that affected me.

One more thing. I'm pretty sure the third chapter of Building the Dream was right around the time I read Hotel Paper the first time.

It haunted me. Gutted me. I still think about it.

I chose to limit myself to fics that I knew when I began them that they would be longer pieces and/or multichapter fics. I've excluded drabbles, outtakes, bonus content for completed fics etc, and any stories that I've posted only the first chapter.

I drive by the place once just to make sure I have the right address. Twice because I know this can’t be right.

[It feels wrong to include OE without including the stories that go with it in the series, even though they've been posted longer and this puts me over my ten]

Outside the Lines

First Line posted: “Three brunettes and a blonde walk into a bar,” Laura says and Heather snorts.

Actual first line if you're reading the chapters chronologically: It’s late and dark. The window only useful to see my reflection. I’m restless and toss in bed.

Outside Chance:

First line of the text: “And that’s it folks. Katniss Everdeen takes the lead.”

First line of the action because split time formatting: “You wanna explain that garbage?” Haymitch snarls and I squint at the target.

BONUS! Because out of all my fics, this first line actually gets regular comments on it, to include multiple people claiming it's the most memorable opening line of anything I've ever shared with you all. If you've read it, you already know what it is. ;)

It's always snowing when I fuck up.

CONCLUSION: They're all short (concise?) opening sentences, and with maybe a handful of exceptions, they start with my characters at an extremely low point.

I have been reading a lot of Everlark fanfic lately, some Delly-Thom, Delly-Gale, and Johale too 😅 Here are a few that I couldn't stop reading!

Of course, let me start with two collections that you have to plow through. I mean, I'd say it's a must because these two events are the most exciting thing since slice bread 🍞🍞🍞

If I may also say another thing, I encourage reading old fics and also reading unfinished fics. AND then, leaving a comment on them. Even just short words or phrases. I think they make writers smile (I know it makes me happy when I get comments!) I know it's hard to wait for updates, and I felt the same for a long time and chose completed fics. I mean, why read an unfinished/ on going one and go on an uncertain ride when there are so many other fics to read? But hear me out, what I get from following and reading unfinished fics are interactions from writers. I almost feel their excitement when I read replies to comments or author's notes. I like knowing a bit about who are writing what I'm reading. Even if it's just a glimpse. As for old fics? Well, unlike bread, fics don't expire! They get even better with time, lol 😂 (Peeta would strangle me for this reference!)

So, read old fics, new fics, on going fics, unfinished fics, and leave a comment. It's nice to interact even in simple ways 😊

The Hunger Games 2020 Season of Hope Fic Exchange

We’re back for another round of the Season of Hope Fic Exchange for 2020, hosted by @shesasurvivor and @sohypothetically! This has been a particularly challenging year for most of us, and we could all use a little extra dose of hope and cheer this year. 

This year, we were also blessed with new Hunger Games content! Please feel free to incorporate any and all characters/pairings from The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes in addition to those from the original trilogy! 

How it works:

You tell the universe what you want to read and what you are willing to write/offer in return. (This will open in the next couple of days.)

You get matched with someone who wants to read or write that thing.

Write or create through December 22.

Fics are submitted, then revealed anonymously at Christmas.

On New Year’s, names are dropped and you find out who wrote your gift.

We’re doing this on A03 again, so you’ll need an account there.

Lolol!! My birthday? it always sucks and not just because no one has given me a puppy yet. I'm not sure what it is, but ever since the dead fiancee, they've all been bad.

fav tropes? lol.. I'm one of those writers who writes what she wants to read. I blame the secret baby fics on Johanna Lindsey . @sohypothetically knows what i'm talking about lol.... love a good historical- Link Your Fingers Through Mine is a fic that I will return to again and again. I also like canon divergent AUs. But then again i'll read just about anything. And I'm one of those who will wait for a fic to be done before I read. I reread my Watcher the other day. Then got mad at myself because I never finished it. Yes, i'm a dork lolololol!!!

8. Do you have any writing buddies or critique partners?

I’ve work’ed with a a lot of Beta’s in my time including @Buttercupbadass, @xerxia31 @notanislander @titianasfics @javistg @alliswell21 @lovely-tothe-bone @burkygirl @booksrockmyface @historywriter2001   @geekymoviemom @sohypothetically & my bestie @norbertsmom to name a few.  I have had my stories pre-read @sunsetsrmydreams read KENS in its infancy, her notes were invaluable.

I love collaborating with Beta’s when I’m writing / editing. I want to know what they think- they see plot holes I cannot...they see flaws. As a writer I’m too close to the material and can be blind by obvious mistakes. They will ask me questions about the characters that will cause me to see them in an entirely different light. They push me to write better and to create scenes that go beyond my creativity.I can never find the right words to express what they mean to mean to me and I feel we never give Beta’s the kudos they deserve. Beta’s work just as hard as I do - BBA edited one of my stories in the middle of the night. So if the story is a success it’s their success as well because they do a job that is invaluable to writers. 

As far as writing collaborative I’ve written with my friend @alliswell21.  We wrote Peeta’s shoes together it was fun and we have a something we were thinking of writing based off of the Dixie Chicks song Earl’s got to die a & the movie Fried Green Tomatoes. It’s still in the planning stages. Shes a hoot to write with because she takes on my crazy imagination.

Complete:  Uh... According to AO3, I have 54 finished stories, but I haven’t posted everything to AO3 yet.

In-Progress:  Again, according to AO3, I have 23 WIPs, but I haven’t posted everything to AO3 yet. I have at least three more I haven’t posted to that platform. Sigh... As @butrfac14 said, it’s called “hutchabelleism.” My apologies.

this is a line from Space Rats, my mash up urban fantasy in space which I started on a dare and is oddly turning out to be the most fun thing I’ve ever written.

My instincts say run, but something deeper in my gut says stay. I have to stay. I have to find something here.

I’ve never really framed my extraordinary abilities as a blessing or a curse. It’s just a part of who I am.  

Right now it feels like a curse.

(ok so I cheated and it’s more than a line. but it didn’t make sense otherwise)

Post 6: The PIP Three-fer

It was another glorious March in 2013 and time for another Prompts in Panem week. The following three fics were written and posted days apart. They're character studies, really, with the longest being about 7000 words. All three are canon a/u.

What I liked:

You can tell I'm fascinated by Peeta and his motivations in these vignettes. You can also tell that the "dead air" between THG and the Victory Tour -- where Katniss and Peeta live doors apart but are estranged -- also weighs on me.

I like the imagery and the way I handle the smut in Intimate Portraits.

Peeta wasn't a virgin in New Beginnings. I caught a bit of heat for it.

I like the intensity of all three of these.

I love that I was still holding on to canon here.

I'm still holding on here to Peeta as a bit of a rebel.

What I don't like:

They're all pretty raw in terms of editing. I also do love virgin!Peeta, but that doesn't mean I can't explore other options. Right?

Last song: No idea, but I know I was listening to a piano music playlist to help me write.

Currently watching: Just finished watching "The Falcon and the Winter Soldier" because I'm about two years behind on watching anything MCU for reasons that you don't wanna know because it'll cause me to go on a rant. Also just finished watching "Wilderness." Been trying to watch season 3 of "The Mandalorian" for about six months now with my kids. We're about halfway through. Aaaaand have only recently started watching "Game of Thrones" yes yes yes, I live under a rock. I've made it through two seasons so far.

Three ships: Everlark, I mean there are other couples I ship and obsess about, but Everlark is the only one I've gone to these lengths for lmao

Favorite color: teal

Currently consuming: a pear...

Last movie: Saltburn (meh)

Wondering what inspired all those yummy desserts during the Decadent tasting in Chapter 3 of Feast Your Eyes?

I just love black forest cake, and it popped into my head when I initially wrote about the first thing she tried. After that my mind was so uncooperative in writing the scene. I really can’t thank @savvylark enough for all she did to try and help me do it on my own before jumping in to do it with me.

Shout out to @sohypothetically for sharing a post about these Glazed Apple Fritters when I was in the maddening throes of trying to write the tasting scene with absolutely no inspiration. I initially was like hey those look goooooood. Then @savvylark sent me a link to the post and I realized how perfect they were.

I think these Triple Chocolate Eclairs just happened to be in my pinterest feed one day and I desperately want to make them, except I can’t because my kids have food allergies and my 5 month old breastfeeds, so no dairy or eggs for me. Yep, writing this scene and looking at all the desserts I’m missing out on was pure torture.

The tarts from our banner! There is no link unfortunately but the line about them tasting like spring and summer was inspired by this photo and it was one of the first lines I wrote as a little broken piece that @savvylark helped structure a paragraph around.

1) How many works in progress to do you currently have in progress?

Heh…

Well, for published stories I have two Hunger Games fics that are WIPs. If I’m being honest with myself, I’m probably done and just going to just tweak things so that they are complete with open-ended endings.

For something that’s actually in process (ie there is a document already started and my motivation is still high), I’m working on a Check Please! nurseydex oneshot right now.

For things my mind has crafted, headcanons (or canon!canons for some original universes) that I’ve spouted, and sometimes even little official outlines that have been made… whooo boy… -_-

Oh, and my thesis.

2) Do you/would you write fan fiction?

See above.

3) Do you prefer paper books or ebooks?

Hmmm… honestly good question. I do love the feel of a physical book in my hand. And when it comes to books that are graphics-heavy, it has to be good paper and ink.

However, for regular novels and fics, I can’t deny the convenience of reading from my phone.

4) When did you start writing?

Made a silly short story as an 8th grade assignment.

However, I truly started typing out stories at the start of 2013.

5) Do you have someone you trust that you share your work with?

A few. You know who you folks are. 

6) Where is your favorite place to write?

At my computer. It’s kinda required to put the thoughts into publishable words.

7) Favorite childhood book?

Dinotopia. It and the very first book I got (Prehistoric Animals by William Scheele) got me interested in paleontology and zoology from the start. Dinotopia also got me interested in art (as an aside, it was awesome getting to meet and chat with James Gurney a few years ago; got him to doodle in a couple of my books). 

Other books of note from my childhood were one dealing with US military aircraft circa 1990 (late enough that there’s a single picture of a B-2; early enough that there’s no entry for the F-117) and another encyclopedia on dinosaurs (this one also from the 90s; the now-out-of-date illustrations by John Sibbick were all the rage). Both were heavy tomes that I read enough to have the binders falling apart.

Also Richard Scarry was the man.

8) Writing for fun or writing for publication?

Right now the former.

Also the latter when it comes to my day job,

But also seriously considering original fiction for the latter as well.

9) Pen and paper or computer?

Computer. Both for outlining/structuring (yay Excel) and actually crafting the story. There’s no pencil/paper in between. 

10) Have you ever taken any writing classes?

Nope.

11) What inspires you to write?

What inspires the story crafting? Overactive imagination.

delayed beats by @seevikifangirl​. I STILL THINK THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST CLEVER FICS I’VE EVER READ. All the plot lines progress in such a natural way, it really makes you care about each and every character and I love this fic so much.

The Mark of You on My Skin by @queen-kerosene​. I am biased I don’t care this is the Tattoo Shop/Flower Shop Odesta AU you need in your life please read it if you haven’t already.

Girls Night Out by sohypothetically. SO FREGGIN’ GOOD??? It’s 46 freggin’ chapters and it’s actually complete and ALL OF IT IS SO GOOD.

I Found You After by bullet.sophia. This is incomplete and abandoned, but I adore all the OCs and I actually care about them and their storylines but they still serve the purpose of the overall story and it’s so rare to see in fics nowadays.

through these labyrinthine forests of empty lungs and broken hearts by public enemy no. 5. Super trippy but really good and I like it a lot!!

Inside the Ward: A Study of Panem’s Mentally Ill by frombluetored. Also incomplete and abandoned, but it had such a good premise and what’s up is still worth a read!
