200 of my favorite albums that I swear by, from any genre - limited to one per artist. I always wanted to do this since the start of the decade and finally got around to it. I’ve had a lot of different musical obsessions up to this point and periods where i was deep into specific genres so I tried to make sure all of that was represented here. Overall it’s a mix of personal classics that I go back to constantly, albums that helped form my taste, and some recently stuff I love. Didn’t want to stress too much over the order, but i’d say the first 50ish are pretty accurate. I’ll post the list below, and a version of the charts with the titles included. whats the good comics to read? ive read & liked hellboy & flex mentallo, watchmen was pretty good. did not rly enjoy punisher that much tho i read a lot of it like 15 years ago. ive read a couple of batman runs as well tho aside from killing joke idr which ones.

caveat that I've been mostly reading Marvel stuff of late and I kinda dropped off comics like...a month and a half ago or so cause of work and pivoting to interest in film, though I'm hoping to get back into it. But here are some things I've enjoyed!

The original Stan Lee and Gerry Conway Amazing Spider-Man runs are great if you want old-school character drama and have the patience for excessive exposition. The same caveats go for Chris Claremont's tenure on Uncanny X-Men which are some of my favorite cape comics ever. This run is really long, so if you want a condensed idea of what it's like, "God Loves, Man Kills" is a great graphic novel that kinda captures the spirit of that era and its core characters, and I also adore the Starjammers/Brood Saga. The New Teen Titans by Marv Wolfman, which @radiofreederry is chronicling as she reads it, works for similar reasons as Claremont's X-Men, which it was emulating and in some ways surpasses.

J. Michael Straczynski's Amazing Spider-Man run...there are two options here: 1) Just read the period where John Romita Jr. is the artist, which ends with "The Book of Ezekiel" arc. This is the strongest and most consistent section of the story. It actually made me cry at least once or twice. 2) Read the whole run, but recognize that it *will* shit the bed at least three times, two of which are mostly pointless and skippable ("Sins Past" and "The Other"), one of which is both one of the worst stories ever told and fundamentally damaged the character to this day, *and* the unfortunate, editorially imposed conclusion to the whole creative run ("One More Day"). However this section also includes two of my favorite Spider-Man stories ("Mr. Parker Goes to Washington/The War at Home," imo the only part of Civil War that actually proved the value of the event, and "Back in Black") so it depends on your patience and willingness to deal with wack stuff in order to get to good parts.

Mark Waid and Mike Wieringo's Fantastic Four run is like, really charming and beautiful and silly but moving. Honestly a perfect run imo.

My favorite Batman story is unquestionably The Long Halloween by Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale, which was a big influence on the Matt Reeves Batman movie (which is also my favorite Batman film). Really embraces the character's detective qualities, which is when I think he's most interesting - I don't need him to be doing a lot emotionally or be the most unconquerable creature with tons of prep time, I need him to be Hercule Poirot in a silly suit. But if you want a great detective story without Batman's baggage, Denny O'Neill's The Question is so so good. Funny, dark, politically charged, philosophically poignant. Kind of ends unsatisfactorily but the ride there is really good detective drama.

If you like Hellboy, it's worth checking out a lot of the late 80s DC/Vertigo lineup which aimed for weirdness and high concepts. This includes Alan Moore's Swamp Thing, Gaiman's The Sandman, Hellblazer, Animal Man, and Doom Patrol. Double-recommendation for Doom Patrol and Animal Man, because both were written by Flex Mentallo author Grant Morrison.

Let's see...George Perez's Wonder Woman is a cool mix of grounded drama and high-fantasy. I like it best when Perez is on pencils and writing, not just the latter. Hawkworld is the only good Hawkman story. Morrison's All-Star Superman is great but requires a lot of Superman familiarity to really appreciate imo. Warren Ellis's time on Thunderbolts is a fun little action/psychological thriller comic. Brian Michael Bendis' Dardevil is actually really good, it's the only thing he's written that I think is great without any qualifications. Gail Simone's Secret Six is a fun variant on the Suicide Squad concept. I like 2000s She-Hulk, Ghost Rider...the first forty-two issues of Ed Brubaker's Captain America is honestly a pretty sick spy thriller.

if I didn't' mention something well-regarded or contemporary here (e.g. Mark Waid's The Flash) assume I just haven't read it yet, I have an extremely long spreadsheet of things to read. This got pretty long but yeah, that's a bunch of stuff I've read and enjoyed!

I bring nothing but this:

Juke and So Close from Enchanted. Luke basically realizes 'oh I'm dead, I can't date Julie.' so then he kinda gets distant and they realize other people can see them so they go with julie to another dance and willie's there and maybe someone asks Flynn to dance and reggie goes somewhere to leave juke alone (bc you know willie, Alex, and reggie want juke to get together) to dance and the song is some pop song or whatever so it's safe for them to dance and then the dj sees them and goes 👀 'oh that looks like a boy who wants to date the girl but can't and the girl also wants to date the boy'👀 and starts playing so close so they dance because Luke wants to be selfish one last time and hold her and dance and stuff. she asks if she can kiss him and he says he doesn't want to do that to her. she then asks "If things were different" and he cuts her off and says yes. and then they run in opposite directions or something and julie goes to mrs Harrison's room and then Luke goes to Julie's locker. Flynn finds julie crying and j says "he's dead. they're dead and Flynn just slowly sits on the bench and comforts her cuz she knew it was coming. Alex, reggie, and willie find Luke, and he's crying and says "I'm dead. We're dead" and Alex and reggie don't get it but willie does and then Luke looks at the boys with a tear stained face and then that's when it hits for alex and reggie. they both r tearing up.

and then!! they kinda just awkwardly move on with their lives, until one night, juke starts walking under the stars or something and she kinda falls a bit and Luke catches her and then he takes her to the studio and gets the boys to help care for her and then they all wake up and during the whole thing julie had a vision that they (including willie, we Stan willex here and these poor teens don't deserve too much heartache) have heartbeats and are alive now and then juke gets together eventually (Flynn approves) and everything's good!

This is mildly inspired by a scene from Wednesday the show, too.

This was a very long ongoing sentence, sorry.

My Highlights of AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door 2023

Well it's time to open the door again as AEW and NJPW put on another big card PPV

Last year it was perhaps one of the best PPVs of the year, let's see how this one holds up

As much as I'd have loved it on the main card, it's such a big deal that AEW put Billie Starkz on a PPV show match, for a tournament, against Athena! And she held her ground

Also if you haven't been watching Athena on ROH, fix that she is practically the company's Ace

It goes understated just how crisp both Stu and ELP are respectively, Stu never got much time because Dark Order are always set to lose while ELP is best known now for his chicanery but they are very good at the wrestling

Conclusion

There were high expectations going into Forbidden Door, but if anyone tries to tell you that it's a 'two match card' feel free to slap them, because they'd probably jizz over the one Bloodline match per PPV and call it the best thing ever. This PPV had its downsides for sure, a lot of weak finishes - a couple maybe done due to injuries or Sting feeling a little loopy - so it didn't come out to its full potential, but it was still a really good night for wrestling.

I would still say in spite of everything it was still a success, but I also feel like AEW and New Japan need to consider making it a 2-Day event to fit more talent on the show, we still lacked names on AEW's side like FTR, HoB, Acclaimed, BCG (if they wanted to come on I'm not sure how Jay feels about using FD as a loophole), Miro, Ethan, Dark Order, PAC, Keith Lee, TNT Champion Christian I mean Luchasaurus, Wardlow, Samoa Joe, and names on NJPW's side like Bullet Club, GoD, Alex Zayne, Nagata, Team Filthy, Bishamon, Great O Khan, Toru Yano (let Yano and Mox face off you cowards!), Master Wato, and KUSHIDA, and this is not even bringing up all the women we could've used - which frankly, we should try to schedule an All-Women's crossover PPV with Stardom featuring DDT/TJPW, AEW/ROH and maybe even other companies' talents.

But I digress, a lot of match finishes were poor but a lot of the wrestling in matches were enjoyable, I had fun and we set up some new directions and potential rematches down the line.

Match of the Night: This is probably gonna be controversial to some but I felt that the 10 Man Tag was the best of the night. Omega/Ospreay and Okada/Danielson were really good, but they also took time to get going, and I do prefer a high-energy wrestling match to a slower technical bout. Best Attire: Tetsuya Naito, man looks like he stepped out of a masquerade party and since SANADA is just his 'regular guy' persona rather than the cold skull and we had no extended Omega attire he's really the only choice. Best Performance: I want to give it to Eddie for carrying the emotional weight of the 10-man, I also want to give it to Punk for being a proper shithouse to a mixed crowd, I also really want to give it to Danielson for wrestling a clinic with a fractured arm, but I do have to give it to Omega and Ospreay as a tie they wrestled their butts off Spot of the Night: As much as I still love Takeshita decking Ishii, it's Omega kicking out of the OWA at 1

and for that reason i am here today to introduce it to you in case you don't know it; and in case you do know it but don't care for it i'm here to turn you into a stan.

it was made a comedy movie in 1980 based on an idea by jane fonda who wrote the leads for the actresses that played them: dolly parton, lily tomlin and jane fonda herself. it tells the story of these 3 women who work at an office with an incredibly "sexist egotistical lying hypocritical bigot" boss. besides being absurdly ahead of its time, calling out blunt mysogyny in typical work environments in america, it also tackles softer subjects like girl hate and internalized mysogyny in women themselves.

in 2009 dolly parton wrote a 9 to 5 musical starring allison janney, stephanie j. block and megan hilty as the leads. it unfortunately closed the same year due to low ticket sales.

and have mentioned it's a comedy? the show is HILARIOUS. after a brief bonding moment the three leads violet, judy and doralee ditch work and to get high. they then share their high fantasies of how they would take revenge on their sexist egotistical lying hypocritical bigot boss, mr. hart, each one killing him by the end of their songs. the next day, violet accidently puts rat poison into mr. hart's coffee instead of sugar. he only takes one sip and spits it out but with his personal assistant's help, he pretends to have been rushed to the hospital in critical condition to play a prank on them. he hides to surprise them because he guesses whoever poisoned him will come back to get rid of the evidence. once the girls spot him they tie him up, throw him in the back of violet's buick and keep him prisoner in his own house while his wife is out on a cruise so he doesn't tell the police what happened.

here's a link to a bootleg of the original cast on broadway and let me tell you that nothing i said does the show justice, it's just incredible and it's so unbelievably underrated; the jokes are great, the story's great, the songs are great, the ensemble work is INSANE. gO WATCH IT NOW.

dawn of chromatica - lady gaga // ok chromatica for me was like a 4 star album but DAWN OF is literally the greatest album of all time. I was such a born-again gaga stan in 2021 and this album was in large part the cause. soooooo many iconic collabs on this remix album.

al mundo azul - mr twin sister // mr twin sister is my favorite band right now, i love their funky music!! their music sounds like how my gender feels

something for thee hotties - megan thee stallion // ok y'all know i am a die-hard megan fan, and i have been preaching and SAYING for like two years that we need an album of freestyles so bad, and she finally delivered. #blessed

a beginner’s mind - sufjan stevens & angelo de augustine // y'all should also know i am a die-hard sufjan fan, and i love this album dearly. there is nothing i love more than soft sufjan cooing falsetto in my ear

immediately remixes - perfume genius // am i cheating to put two remix albums on this list? i don't care though because this is another iconic, amazing remix album. huge shoutout to Planningtorock who has an iconic remix on this AND on dawn of chromatica
