STELLER'S SEA EAGLE Haliaeetus pelagicus ©Laura Quick This bird lives in coastal northeastern Asia and mainly preys on fish and water birds. The Kamchatka Peninsula in Far Eastern Russia is known for its relatively large population of these birds. In their breeding grounds, Steller's sea eagles subsist largely on salmon, and they both hunt and scavenge for this resource. Annual salmon runs provide an enormous bounty and Steller's sea eagle nests are typically located near coasts and rivers where these fish appear en masse. These birds of prey hunt from a perch or from flight by diving and clutching prey in their talons. They also stand in shallow water or on the ice and grab passing fish when the opportunity arises. Like other eagles, Steller's also steal food from other birds which is called "kleptoparasitism." Out of all the raptors, these are indeed the rarest eagles/raptors on earth. Because they use their ‘eagle eyes’ to spot food in the sea, detecting a fish, they will fly over their prey. Indeed, sometimes diving from 30 meters to catch the prey with their claws. Steller’s eagle spends most of its time in Siberia and Russia, therefore, their primary habitat. In wintertime, they migrate to different remote places. Yeah, I got it! 🐟⁠ ⁠ The catch is speedy, and before the fish know it, it’s the eagle’s breakfast. Steller’s sea eagles are the largest and rarest sea eagles worldwide. Their appearance is very elegant and impressive. Of course, with such a beautiful bright yellow/orange bill, white forehead, upper wings, tail, and dark black looking body. Indeed that looks impressive and colorful. The stand-out feature is its orange-looking legs.⁠ ⁠ These eagles spend most of their time in Siberia and Russia, but in the wintertime, they migrate to Hokkaido Japan. There you can spot them effortlessly flying over the sea or landing on trees.
