I think modern au Zhu SHOULD be the lesbian best friend trope to Ouyang except that its because this man is her pet project and gODDDAMIT she's gonna FIX him she's gonna MAKE him be BETTER she's going to SOLVE EVERYTHING and he will RESPECT HER (she is actively making him worse). She has a whole complex about it and everything. She has based a part of her identity on dragging this man up from his toxic funk and is fully convinced that if she tries hard enough he will eventually come to his senses and be an equal participant in this relationship. They have a terrible wonderful toxic loving codependent relationship that's neither a romance nor a friendship nor a rivalry but a secret fourth thing.
Predictably, this does not go well. The character arcs would be Zhu learning she can't fix a sinking ship and letting Ouyang fail by himself, and Ouyang learning to not be a shit person, actually, and coming out of his bubble of self-centeredness and working on himself instead of unloading his emotional labor onto the people around him. And they should both get to develop a healthier relationship with each other than what they had in canon bc queer solidarity is great and its even better when it's in the shape of some weird bullshit some gay people built out of the corpse parts of heteronormative romance (affectionate and completely unironic)

The free love mod is wild in the best of ways… just imagine you’re like. Some guy in pelican town and you meet this farmer and they just absolutely sweep 7 of your neighbors off your feet by bringing them sunflowers and eggs sometimes. One of them is some war vet who lives in the clinic with Harvey. One is the girl who runs the vineyard. Ones a pirate who washed up on shore a few months ago out of nowhere like guliver animal crossing. One is the girl who works at Joja mart. Ones the god damn wizard that you kinda maybe know about… ones that rich kid who wants to build bridges. and then finally there’s the guy who moved in a few years ago into that cabin on the beach who writes stories or smth? He’s there too, and they’re all under whatever spell that dirty little farmers got going on. Something they put in the crops??

a little no-spoilers rec list of other medias ive been enjoying very much recently
Countdown to Countdown by Velinxi - webcomic, updates every thursday. magical/sci-fi dystopia with rich worldbuilding to die for, a fantastically gripping plot, incredible character dynamics, and the most gorgeous art style in every page. when i first found this, i had bingeread everything thus far in one night up til 2am on a work day because 1) the story is Amazing i literally could not put it down until i had no more pages to read and 2) it took me longer than usual to read through because every single page looks breathtaking, i had to stop and fully savor each one.
Uncanny Charm by COM - manhwa, im not linking anything because i dont wanna get sniped for where i read it from, research and find a link urself HAHA but my god, go read this. supernatural drama with horror, character pair chemistry off the CHARTS, and also you will cry. i have cried at so many portions of this manhwa. i have also laughed my ass off at many parts, but whenever i reread old chapters (which ive done several times) i always still end up crying at the bits. whenever this updates i rejoice and then feel immense fear for the state of my feels. so VERY well done.
BobbyBroccoli's video documentaries on scientific fraud - swerve, ive also been watching a lot of video essays these days and my gripe with a lot of the video essay genre is "why does it have to be a video?" as in, what does the visual and audio form of this piece in particular add to the work that wouldnt have been possible as a written essay? and BobbyBroccoli's vids not only justified the form but knocked it outta the ballpark. very well written and visualized so amazingly that it's an artform to me, there's Visual Metaphor going on in there. my personal fave of his right now is his most recent 2-part series The man who faked human cloning and its sequel How to catch a criminal cloner
