(hardly any kids come down this way and buying candy for the occasion is mostly a wasted effort so i've just started emptying my candy dish into the bucket lol)

#eliot posts #tho at the beginning of the night there were various chocolates #mostly mint chocolates and dark chocolate reese's #bc my upstairs neighbours gave me a SHITLOAD of chocolates a couple weeks ago and i don't like those kind #me and my upstairs neighbours are locked in a silent competition where we try to be more polite than each other #like. they had given me a plate of cookies #so i was like hoohoohoo let me return that plate with fresh baked muffins on it #and when i knocked on their door to deliver their muffins they gave me a big container of candies #(i told them i could not possibly eat that much chocolate and they told me i could give it to others and to just take it) #i don't know if they're aware if this strange polite one upsmanship we find ourselves in or not #it's like #i help them move furniture. they catsit for me for a week and REFUSE to take payment #they say my cat is their friend bc he is often looking at then through the window when they go to work early in the morning #they're such nice people i'm gonna miss them when i move

One of the ads I keep getting on here is for a pharmacy in the small town where my grandparents used to live many years ago, which is nowhere near where i live - not even in fact on the same island. I don't understand it. But I am intrigued

there's a very friendly orange cat thats been coming to our garden being a massive attention whore and is probably a stray we're like guess we have a cat now landlords do not interact

horrors/horrors being turned into banality/banality being the real horror is such a fascinating dance to me, don't make me explain, round and round they go.

#ok ok I will try. take some horrifying horrible monster that haunts a village and torments the people. It feeds on dreams and nightmares. #pretty scary! #now - for the sequel you COULD make it buffer and more cruel and whatever. Or add more of them or something. Easy-peasy. #but the real next step of horror would be...to see its limbs and legs wrapped in cellophane and sold at the butcher's and no one comments. #oh oh I know: think of the Destroyer in Borderlands 1. Ancient creature guarding the mysterious vault and only appearing every 100 years #now adding more and more vaults and creatures...it's okay (looking at you Borderlands 3) but the real horror? #that was seeing its eye harvested and used as a weapon in the Pre-Sequel. The real horror is no longer this strange bizarre creature #but the act of sacrilege that is reducing it to its parts as a tool #BUT THEN if you have a banal setting - then the horror lies in the banality gaining its own life. #working in a storage job and being sent to retrieve something and realising the storage rooms never end and realising you've never left #the internet as a hivemind. years and years of living in an apartment complex and hearing steps and noises - #until you realise you've never SEEN any of your neighbours. and you start to pay attention and the only signs of life are the house itself. #the fly-realising-it-is-sitting-in-the-venus-fly-trap-ness of it all #and the jaws are closing around you. #the horror of the untamable being tamable vs the horror of the tamable taming you. #is this something? am I saying something?

So, my neighbours house is burning down to the ground right now. It’s so surreal, we had a bit of a panic earlier tonight at like 1am when another neighbour came banging on our door, I opened it and she told me that our neighbour’s house was on fire. And we live right next door. Our house is super close. So I shouted for my parents to wake up and ran up the stairs to wake my brother and then I ran around to get our dogs into the car in case we had to leave. I threw my computer into the car. Just absolute uncertainty and panic. But we’re fine. They are letting it all collapse and then they’ll put the fire out. Our house is fine but we’re without water, as we share water with our neighbour and the water pump runs on his electricity. So we’ll see if we can get an electrician out tomorrow/today to see if we can hook it up to our electricity.

It’s just such a shock. And the adrenaline kick I got was crazy. I just picked up one of my German Shepherd’s and put him into the car. Normally I can’t lift him from the ground. And we got ahold of one of his sons to tell him what happened so he came out and it just doesn’t feel real.

here’s a little push for you to do something you really want to today. something as small as buying a special snack because you just fancy it, a pretty item of clothing you see, something silly and impulsive and just for you or something as big as a life changing decision, accepting/applying for that dream job, telling someone how you feel, leaving something that no longer serves you. Just do something today, or work up to it in the next few.

I just found out my neighbour passed away. We weren’t close, didn’t know her particularly well. But, you know, you would exchange a kind word or a smile if you ran into her, send a card on Christmas. Just the other day she was out in her garden, meticulously kept so neat, pottering about. Every hot day we’ve had of late there’s been clothes on the line. She was old, but she didn’t seem that old. And she appeared to be well and busy. So it’s such a weird thing to comprehend. But death just happens. Just like that. And there’s been so much death in the news of late. But life just goes on. It’s a funny thing.

So yes. Do something! Be happy if you can, do something for yourself and enjoy it, even if it’s small.

#I’m okay and sorry for my morbid curiousity of looking out the window this morning #but wow I honestly thought she’d be around for years #I thought we’d move away or I’d move out before then #we lost one of our other neighbours last year too #so strange #I’ve been working up to doing something for me lately and so that’s something I’m still working toward #but I will be kind to myself today when I can #please be kind to yourselves too #🫶🏻

#the cleanup took like 100 hours in total lol #first we fished out all the dead leaves and grime with a butterfly net #then my spouse built a diy filtering system using a hose and aquarium filter pads #i spent several days just washing those pads over and over again #it was like cleaning up a swamp #the neighbours must think we're a little strange but we did it haha
