ARC-V Month Day 16: Actually, He Would Say That

Look, we all like our cast with their pros and their cons, but sometimes there's just something... missing, when you look at canon portrayal. Some more depth. Some trivial details and silly nitpicks, to add to their flair... which are exactly what today is all about. Show us your headcanons and most random thoughts!

Ah yes, headcanons: my favorite way to patch up the swiss cheese holes in any story ever, and the personal cherry on top I place whwn there are no holes to patch. For someone who claims to have a lot of them, I've shared a rather small amount of my headcanons so far... but that changes today!

1- In a world where the counterparts stay separate, when all is said and done, the Lancers decide to keep in contact at Sawatari's suggestion -shocker, I know- and so they make a groupchat to talk about mundane life and things that strike their fancy. Said groupchat is... actually decently normal considering its members, but you still see flashes of the weirdest shit sometimes- like Dennis' massive collection of kaomojis, Reiji's 10-page long essays on why black coffee is overrated, Shun's inability to stand back and watch this nerdy fuck slander the superior coffee blend, Serena's copious cat stickers and reaction pics, Tsukikage's concerning stash of blackmail screenshots (99% of which is enabled by Sawatari, much to banana's mortfication), and Yuuya's oddly random, unprompted threats of homicide that he never fails to end with an innocent :D

2- Shuuzou has adopted all kids in the messy Akaba/Kurosaki/Hiiragi family tree, some metaphorically, most literally. He even got Himika to sign off custody of Reira, but left Reiji to his own devices because he just- doesn't know how to go about it with the guy. He's still invited to family & friend gatherings, however, and ends up getting called "son" no less than seven times in front of the whole family and the Sakakis. Legend has it that Reiji is still looking for ways to disappear into the ground to this day. Don't get him wrong, he appreciates the sentiment, but everytime he hears the word he straight up bluescreens.

3- As little screentime as they get to actually appear and talk, the monster spirits are very much still willing to communicate with humans- with a few exceptions, of course. Some of the older spirits like the Magistus quartet and Agents have strong reservations toward making themselves known after the dimension split fiasco(s), but then there's little ones like the Wights and the Ghostricks, who just spontaneously spawn into the human world on Halloween (to the dismay of Maiami City's police department, which had to contend with 57 reports of vandalism and stolen candy and various small acts of mischief the first time it happened).

4- The reason behind the Performapals' synergy and eventual archetypal overlap with Odd-Eyes actually goes a few ways back to one of their shows as a wandering troupe. While preparing for departure, Hip Hippo stumbled upon a lone dragon roaming in the wild on their own, and told his companions about it. One hour in and lots of excitable discussion later, their troupe gained a special new member who would soon become their main attraction, and together they resolved to improve their talents, to put on the best show under their master's conduct.

Admittedly... this is quite a bit shorter than I wanted it to be. There are still many headcanons I've yet to put into words, buuuut I'm afraid this submission is a tad late already, so I'll have to ever-so-subtly shove some of those into written works and post the rest on their own later (someday. sometime. eventually. for sure.)

The Maligned Yuri Bracket's preliminary round is underway!

It will still take me a good deal more time to find or make images for all of these pairings and schedule the polls, so don't expect voting to start up right away. But let's take a look at our contestants anyway!

EDIT: The preliminary round has started! This post will be updated with links to polls as they are posted and results as they come out.

I've decided that all pairings that received more than one submission will automatically be included in the final bracket, since there were so few of them. The remaining pairings have been sorted into 55 matchups of 2-4 pairings each, the winners of which will be added to a final bracket of 64.

Arc V Anniversary Discussion Day 21: Self-Insert/OC Day

So this got long, and i’ll divide it into some categories lol. First, shipping babies! Because I can never have enough of those!!

all under the cut cause it’s so long fuck

Pendulumshipping

Sakaki Keahi: the oldest and one of the two Sakaki children who follow into professional dueling. Reiji and Yuya both help her find ways of navigating an action field to accommodate her paralyzed legs, both with Reiji’s technology and adaptive devices he designs for her, and Yuya teaching her how to trust her monsters to help move her across the stage if she needs a hand. Keahi is very much a big sister, always mothering her little sisters and nagging at even her friends. Most of her friends affectionately call her ‘mom.’

Sakaki Kouki: is very much more technologically focused, and she likes to tinker with Solid Vision and stuff. She’s a shy girl who has trouble socializing. She’s also gender questioning, currently iding as a trans girl.

Sakaki Ray: Kouki’s twin sister. Ray is determined to follow in both her sister’s, father’s, and namesake’s footsteps in order to become the world’s best entertainment duelist. She’s super emotional and tends to be really hard on herself when she messes things up, but she’s also very determined. She’s Way into Riding Duels and actually feels more comfortable with those than with Entertainment Duels in the end because there’s less to live up to

Sakaki Sakura: Sakura is the youngest, a precocious seven year old who wants to be a princess astronaut. Her favorite things to do are watch her sisters duel and play dress up, especially with papa’s big scarf as a cape.

All four girls have the ability to see and hear duel monsters.

Darkrebelshipping

Kurosaki Fukuro: the older twin.

Kurosaki Yugao: the younger twin. (Yugo tries to be upset that Yugao’s name is so close to his, and Yuto starts to accidentally call the two of them each other’s names, but he loves his “niece and nephew” so he can’t be too mad lol.)

Fukuro and Yugao are both generally quiet, though Yugao is definitely the more assertive of the two. They like to sit at home and draw, mostly, but they are also rabid fans of various tv shows and if you want them to be loud, get the two of them in a shipping argument. They usually have different tastes in ships and they will fight each other to the death over them lol. In general these two are a couple of fucking anime weebs. They’re also fucking hot topic nerds (what do you expect when they have shun and yuto as dads)

Appleshipping

Sho Sakaki-Atlas: takes after them in loving mechanical stuff and fixing things. Sho adores machines and they are always getting messy working on them or getting in trouble because they completely don’t pay attention to anything except whatever project they’re hyperfocusing on.

Yumi Sakaki-Atlas: Yumi is the younger of the two, and she’s less interested in building motorcycles as she is in riding them. She’s very much a daredevil like her father and likes to go on joyrides a lot.

Rin and Yugo argued for hours about what surname to end up taking, Yoko’s or Jack’s, because Yoko basically adopted them but Jack also did kinda unofficially adopt them too and was willing to let them use his name. They dueled for it and it ended in a tie.

Stealthshipping

Shiunin Hotaru: a very cheerful, exuberant girl who is excited about everything. Everything is an adventure to her and she has very little sense of trouble, often sticking her nose into things she shoulded. The younger twin.

Shiunin Amaya: a lot more cautious than Hotaru after her time with the Fuma Clan. She can be haughty and full of herself, but she’s also very much recovering from what she went through at the hands of the Fumas, which makes her try to act a lot stronger and more confident than she actually often is.

Both girls are actually Tsuki’s sister’s kids, but after her husband died in an accident and she herself contracted terminal cancer, she begged Tsuki to take them so that the Fumas couldn’t claim them. Hotaru they managed to get, but Amaya was taken away by the Fuma Clan for several years before they could retrieve her.

Those were the only kiddos i had the time/energy to doodle, but here’s a few others that I have!

Speaking of Tsuki’s sister, here’s a few more OCs that I came up with to fill out characters’ families/backstories:

Chizaki (Fuma) Kanon: Tsukikage and Hikage’s older sister. She fled the Fuma clan when they were kids to avoid being executed for getting pregnant with someone outside the family, promising to come back for her brothers one day. She ultimately was never able to get back to them until she saw Tsukikage listed as one of the Lancers. She died of cancer a few years after finally reconnecting with her brothers.

Hojo Gekko: Reiji’s cousin from his mother’s side; the Hojo family is incredibly rich and tied to the Fuma family since feudal Japan. He’s a scarily powerful young man even though he’s the younger brother, and Tsukikage was supposed to be sworn to serve him when he turned 18 before Reiji snapped up both brothers himself. He’s a scary and possessive person.

Hojo Nikko: Reiji’s cousin and Gekko’s older brother. He doesn’t give a shit about the Fuma clan anymore and would prefer to leave their archaic connection in the past. He’s the current owner and CEO of the Hojo Corporation.

Kurosaki Chae-won: Shun and Ruri’s mother, an exuberant and excitable woman who is excessively supportive.

Kurosaki Airi: Shun and Ruri’s other mother, slightly more lowkey than Chae-won, but not by much. Loves her kids to death and embarrasses them daily.

Kunori Mao: Yuto’s mother, a quiet and kind young woman who has raised Yuto by herself. Becomes close friends with the Kurosaki moms.

And here’s some of Yoko’s gang members which I came up with for a fic that i will write eventually, whom y’all probably saw already if you saw my art submission for the “gang” prompt earlier this month.

Maeda Maiko: Yoko’s first gf, a rough and tumble kinda girl, but also very fun-loving.

Kobayashi Hikaru: easygoing, tends the bar and helps the girls sort out their problems; can’t usually be bothered to do any of the actual fighting, but when there’s someone in trouble, you don’t want to be on her bad side.

Watanabe Honoka: formerly a rival who was won over by Yoko, she’s a bit of a wild card and is more interested in picking fights than winning them

Katou Satomi: a matronly woman who’s sweet nature belies her dangerous skills. Often smiling.

Fujioka Tomiko: a small and ferocious girl who loves joy-riding.

Oshiro Kiku: a nervous girl from a rich family who was once trapped in a relationship with another gang leader before Yoko destroyed the gang, she hangs out with the Shooting Stars to feel safer and helps run their finances.

And finally.....I gotta shout out my self-insert, cause of course I have one of those:

Hale Reiser: an American college student on a study abroad in Japan, she’s dazzled out of her low emotional period by Yuya’s duel against Strong Ishijima, and decides to take up dueling to emulate him. When the truth of the dimensional war comes out, she joins a program to train at-home Lancers in case of a home invasion. At some point she meets Grace Tyler and all of my self-indulgent fantasies of dating Grace come to fruition.

vex shun memories post, synchro edition

its a bit hard to puzzle out an exact timeline because there are two??? points of divergence from canon? but. hm. i know the revolution shinji started happened successfully, and i know that the lancers spent some time at crow’s place during or after the friendship cup.

the main point of divergence might be shinji & tsukikage’s duel? bc in canon he almost managed to start the rebellion right then and there but then yuzu & chojiro’s battle distracted everyone back into submission, i think that last part just didn’t happen in vex’s verse. like some people got distracted but a good third of the commons who were watching the duels started a legitimate uprising.

a lot of the duels vex just doesn’t remember & its either because ey was trapped in hotel hell or like busy with the uprising, but im trying to figure out like when ey ended up in solidarity with crow & shinji, like if that happened as in canon or before that or...? ok the dennis match definitely happened.

shinji was like ensmenched in the rebellion by the time his duel with yuuya was supposed to start but i think he showed up anyway to try and raise more support for the cause. yuuya was.......... privileged. and unhelpful. i think vex was watching that match but only vaguely?

so then when roger pulled his “yuuya is tops” shenanigans, the rebellion was already happening, and that made it pick up speed.

so then it was crow and shun’s duel, and shun was like a wreck of ptsd and crow was trying to rally for the cause and then the thing with the kids happened.... at the end of that duel it was kind of like. fist bump > raise fists > both shout to the people to Rise Up

so after that i think the friendship cup kept happening but like very few people were paying attention. the rebellion broke into the recycling facility instead of starting there, and that’s sort of when it went from a pest to a threat in roger & the council’s eyes.

the rebellion made it to the council while reiji was still there, reiji and shinji shouted at each other a lot, shun weighed in, reiji ended up deciding that allying with the rebellion was more likely to net him anti-academia soldiers than staying allied with the useless council. the council was ousted.

so everyone who lost duels, instead of regrouping in the recycling, once the recycling joined the rebellion, everyone stayed like at the houses of different members of the rebellion when they needed to rest.

vex has a pretty clear memory of waking up at crow’s place from a ptsd nightmare and heading outside. crow comforting them while some of the other lancers slept on inside, oblivious. that, moreso than their duel, cemented crow’s place as like, someone vex trusted. i guess that would have been after the crow & yuuya duel, so im wondering if after that memory crow told vex what happened with that.

so the rebellion is full swing, the council have been ousted, roger has declared martial law, and the freindship cup is still kind of going on but no one is paying attention.

i think that once the rebellion made it to security headquarters, they managed to break roger’s mind-control machine, and that was the real turning point by which they claimed victory.

i think crow and shinji did argue about the direction of the rebellion but like crow didn’t try to /stop/ shinji. i think it was more along the lines of like [crow voice] we should stop pushing the tops off their buildings, killing people is not excellent. [shinji voice] Are You Sure. i dont think they reached an agreement but by that point the rebellion was too large and diverse for either of them to really control so. some people were murderers and some people were not.

so as far as canon plot, reiji did beat roger in a duel and then roger (attempted to????) drag yuzu to fusion. no memories yet of how successful he was. the thing with the wormhole didn’t happen.

yuuya and jack probably did duel but like no one really paid attention, they were both pretty upset about it.

so at the end of everything, all the lancers were present in synchro except i guess selena and dennis, and reiji helped shinji establish a new executive council. a lot of the tops who didn’t get murdered were shoved in jail, the actual prisoners were almost all let loose. a few genuinely terrible people were among them so it wasn’t the most well-thought-out plan but like. desperate times desperate measures.

i think shinji was proposing projects to turn the tops dwellings into public service buildings when the lancers left. reiji and shinji cooperated a lot and shinji told everyone about the dimensional war and a lot of people who were still feeling the adrenaline signed up as foot soldiers. i think crow ended up falling back into the shadows more. he was like, im proud of shinji and i want to help but also someone’s gotta look after the kids and i think you can handle the politics without me for the mostpart.

so the lancers + like a couple hundred commons soldiers went to xyz, and i think? like jack went with them? and im gonna watch that arc again before i say more about what happened there.

so on the more tender side i have like a ton!! of emotions!! about shinji & crow & shun’s dynamic as like a semi queerplatonic trio?

essentially like. crow and shinji are married. really married, like. shinji saved up for over a year to buy rings and they had a ceremony and crow’s kids carried flowers and it was gay (but not legal bc tops were kinda homophobic). despite being married they’re not particularly openly affectionate, especially in public. partly for safety reasons and partly theyre just not that kind of people.

so there was a curve of like... them beginning to trust shun enough to be affectionate with each other while ey’s present. them allowing him access to their private moments.

and then like... ok so they’re at least a decade older than ey is. i think the ages were like.... shun 18, shinji 28, crow 32? so it was a little bit of them taking em under their wing and a little bit of like... shun being completely alone and not being willing to express vulnerability or share contact with anyone other than them. so little things like fistbumps and back pats, sharing a bed and not cuddling but just being close enough that if shun has a nightmare it’ll wake someone up. shun telling them about yuuto and them being absolutely sympathetic. them telling him about their lost companions in return. them reassuring shun that his leaving xyz wasn’t abandoning everyone.

and this is the first time shun has had any kind of support system whatsoever since yuuto died, so it really means a lot to em.

i think shun ends up getting onto slightly better terms with reiji as well like. no apologies on either side but ey doesn’t feel quite as on guard around daem once theyre all working towards a common cause and ey can actually see reiji at work.

since yuuya stays involved in the friendship cup until the end, idt vex really saw a lot of them at all, and by the time they all go to xyz, vex is still suspicious as hell about what happened to yuuto.
