What do you think of Akihito Sudou as a character? His relationship with other characters? He's my second fav character in chihayafuru but i don't see anyone talking about him that much anywhere🤧 plus I wanted to read some fanfics about him but couldn't find any good one,so if you don't mind, any recs?👀 Thank you, have a nice day😊
oh i am a big sudo fan! he was a character that i initially didn't focus on a ton, but rather the more i read of the manga, the more i really came to appreciate his character, to the point where i'd probably list him in my top 5-6 chihayafuru characters….. he started out as more of a background rival character (i think i didn't like him at first because he was mean to chihaya amshd;falkhsd), but with sudo, suetsugu did one of the things she's best at as a character writer: taking characters that fit neatly into archetypes at first, and over time fleshing them out beyond that point. all of her characters, even supporting or background ones, end up feeling like fully realized people; she accomplishes something similar with characters like suo, shinobu, and even taichi.
building upon this idea of archetypes, what makes sudo so compelling to me is the fact that at first he seems like a sadistic karuta player who will bring adversarial tension to karuta tournaments, nothing more—but there's a lot more to him than that. over time, we as readers and the characters around him start to see that sudo is a sadist, but he's not a cold-hearted or uncaring person. he truly loves karuta, and his sadistic, intense nature as a player is how he displays that passion and love for karuta. (in a way this acts as a precursor to arata’s internal struggle, where even though he doesn’t want to, playing karuta ruthlessly turns out to be the truest way to show respect to his opponents as his equal—with sudo, he has already reached the point where he’s comfortable going to that place in karuta, because he has internalized that that’s how his passion for it comes through.) he shows an unwavering passion for not just becoming the meijin or the top player, but a desire to stay involved in karuta his entire life because he loves it that much. even among a cast of characters who are literally all obsessed with karuta, sudo is special to me in that way because our perceptions of him as a player shift so greatly over time.
sudo also cares deeply about the people around him—his team, suo, even his rivals like taichi and chihaya. i think this second point is something very striking about him. there's actually a quote in the manga fruits basket about how every person's kindness looks a little different, how it takes a different shape, and for a lot of people you have to look harder to recognize that innate kindness—because it doesn't look the same as what we imagine “kindness” will look like. for some reason, sudo is always the chihayafuru character that makes me think of that quote! i found it really impactful to see a character like sudo, who at first glance appears mean and malicious, turn out to be one of the kindest characters in the series, one who loves karuta in a truly uncomplicated way. the way he shows affection for other people is more complicated by his hard exterior, but he genuinely has a very big heart. obviously his relationship with suo is a standout and probably what made sudo a favorite for a lot of readers, including myself. there’s something really special about watching sudo do everything he can to keep suo in the karuta world—and when he cried for suo, mountains were simply moved! it’s just clear to me that sudo is in love with him loves him a lot even if he doesn’t say it directly, and their bond is quite meaningful to me.
aside from this obvious one, i also love sudo’s friendship with chihaya so much!! i never really expected to, but i was obsessed with their little challenger/qualifier training arc together! the way they play off of each other is very fun to read. i think their dynamic is also interesting because chihaya typically hates people who play karuta in a “nasty” or mean-spirited way, but i feel like she’s able to reach a common ground with sudo because his sadism is so deeply rooted in a love for karuta, which chihaya can understand. i also really love sudo’s scenes with taichi and desperately wish they had more scenes together. the way sudo teases and simultaneously pushes and motivates taichi….. it’s good. specifically, i think the interplay of suo-sudo-taichi is fascinating and no one talks about it enough. it isn’t lingered on a ton in the text, but sudo must have been feeling immense jealousy when suo started focusing all of his attention on taichi; i love fanworks that dive into that aspect of his character and his relationships with suo and taichi. (there’s a lot that can be said about how those three characters intersect and are juxtaposed to each other—suo and taichi drawn together by their common “apathy” towards karuta while sudo is “left out” as someone who truly loves it; taichi who appears to love karuta but secretly thinks he hates it vs. sudo who loves karuta in such a warmhearted way that’s obscured by his harsh exterior….. however, that’s a far more complicated post; i genuinely feel like i could talk about those three forever, so i will rein myself in!)
i haven’t read a ton of fics with sudo featured, unfortunately! most of the ones i’ve seen are chihaya/sudo, which i don’t ship, but if you’re looking for something to read there are several on ao3 that you could check out! my favorite fic portrayal of sudo, however, is definitely how he's characterized in perfectly still in the dark by bloodletters. while suo and taichi's relationship is the main focus of the fic, sudo has the most striking scene with taichi—even if you are not a gay sudo truther like myself, it's so worthwhile to read just because of how expertly and subtley he is characterized. now that i think about it, i think that fic might've actually been what jumpstarted my love for sudo, but i digress LMAO. tl;dr out of all the chihayafuru characters, sudo for me is the closest to being canonically gay, and he should be celebrated more for that reason alone 🤍

Heyhey, so i saw you answer questions about finder series and replying to everyones theories so i just had to throw in my own theory (lol). Well its gonna be me rambling mostly 🙃
Anyways so after the incident, Aki wakes up and since they hit their heads pretty hard. I assume that Akis lost his memory and when he woke up with sudou (why did they put them together???) They also take him and they brain wash him or trick him into thinking that asamis the bad guy so that when he comes back he can go kill him (but honestly does that mean well get some badass aki???) So basically in the 6 months that asami disappears in Aki is fully trained to seduce Asami and kill him.
Ajsklss ok done, i think this makes absolutely no sense but this has been on my mind for a while since reading the chapter.
Ty for reading my ramblings
Oh my days, @svaylove I am so sorry. I have been meaning to answer this since... forever, but this arc has put me in a very bad place meta-wise. I just don't know what to say lol.
Your post is spot-on. As recent developments have shown, Asami's enemies took advantage of Akihito's state and kidnapped him as well as Sudoh creating this super elaborate and outlandish scheme in which Akihito not only got trained to seduce and kill Asami, but also to protect Sudoh at all costs? It's just... too much. I mean, I love the fact Asami has been so invested in taking care of Akihito and all but what is the point of keeping Sudoh? What fate awaits him? Of all the ways to give his character punishment/closure/redemption, I was not expecting this.
What I am most curious about is, what does Asami father have do with all this? Why did we even get to see his half-brother unless he is going to play a bigger role in this arc? Who is Alex, really? And again... why? By all means, give me new characters, but it can get a bit tricky to appreciate them when we know how easily they get dropped without any satisfying development.
(And yes, I miss Kou, Mitarai, Kuroda, Yoh, heck show me more of Suoh even! Ok, rant over. XD)

Hey hello Master 😀 ! How are you ? Do you think Sakazaki will come back later? It would be interesting that after Asami had to trust Akihito, that he would learn the existence of this "market" (maybe Misha or Fei Long would be there to comfort Akihito hehe 😈) and see his reaction (can to be a temporary break where Akihito and Asami should question themselves ..).
Hello, Akhimy! Fine, thanks☕
Hope he appears. I would like to understand what happened in the temple. Sakazaki set off a fire and left Takaba a note with the warning “You’re already found”. For what purpose? We know that he works for Mikhail, but there may be independent actions, so it’s too early to draw any conclusions. As we know, as a result, Akihito left the shelter and turned to Feilong for help.
Tumblr media
Sudou, in exchange for information about Asami’s organisation, asked something from Mikhail. Misha told Fei, that Sudou in exchange wanted to join his organization. Was that all or were there more conditions? And how Sudou did find out the location of the goods? Because Mikhail hadn’t told him that.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Perhaps the “deal” between Sakazaki and Takaba will pop up at some point. But I do not think that disclosure will entail the separation of A/A. It would be like a pointless soap opera. In the end, they only recently reunited and promised not to leave each other. There is no reason for the loss of trust, if do not invent them and do not escalate the drama artificially.
Tumblr media
I would rather see Misha and Fei in other circumstances, as far away from A/A as possible and as close to each other as possible❤ hee hee

Hello there! I have read your post about people not understanding why Akihito is so special to Asami. Well, I admit my favorite case is Kuroda. He perhaps wondered why Akihito was chosen but he observed him well and his opinion changed to the point of teasing Akihito in this elevator and taking actual bullets for him. It's something only Asami has ever done to Akihito so far and any other character ! Maybe it's due to the fact Kuroda is a prosecutor but I can see him liking Aki in the future.
This is a really interesting point, and I think there are a couple of factors that come into it. One is class dynamics. Both Sudou--openly--and Kuroda--perhaps more discreetly--see Aki as beneath Asami in terms of class and therefore not suited to be his mate.
The other thing is that I don’t think any of these men (Kuroda, Sudou, Kirishima, Fei Long) really truly understand Asami. It’s not entirely their fault. Asami keeps people at arm’s length and there is this aspect of himself that he has so far shown to only one person: Akihito.
So I think a lot of the people around Asami make assumptions about what sort of person Asami should be with based on an image of Asami that isn’t complete. They only know a projection that Asami has created, even those closest to Asami, like Kuroda.
While I do agree that Kuroda made an effort to observe Aki (not with a view to liking him but in making sure he wasn’t out to hurt Asami) and that his opinion did shift, I think it’s too early to say if his opinion changed to the point where he believes Aki is the right one for Asami. We’ll see.
The interesting case is Fei Long, whose opinion of Aki changed independent of his feelings for or his view of Asami. Fei grew to appreciate Aki as a human being on his own merits and not through the lens of whether or not he was worthy of Asami’s attentions. I think it’s at the point where if Fei took a bullet for Aki, it would be for Aki’s sake alone. Where Kuroda and Kirishima--I think--are still acting in Asami’s interests moreso than Aki’s.

Just want to share another thought of AU here, what if finder series was a movie or drama. The cast must be hillarious and making mischief behind the scene, like bloopers and others. And they also get press conference where the cast talk about their characters that seems not match at all of them in real life. (Maybe some of them or maybe really different) like role reversed! They often get teased a lot from the reporters. I would like to picture where Akihito cast might be serious person while asami is the playful one (usually the supportive senior).🤣
Mikhail being second senior beside asami try his best to help the director to contain the ‘kids’ from running around and pulling on each other pranks all the time. Mikhail is the mother here, while Asami and the others trying to change the set into summer camp.😆😆
Sometime Akihito even thinking why he being in the same group with all this people (but secretly loves it). Enemies only on the scenes; Akihito and sudou are best friend in real life. They share their struggle from ups and down being in the same agency. Sudou being there when Akihito having mental breakdown pressure from all the expectation. He calms the younger man down, and becomes so defensive when Akihito getting ‘attack’ from the reporters or fans. He is like big brother to Akihito, to be truth, he is big brother to everyone that younger than him on the set. Being almost at the same age, Mikhail and Asami also being prominent to the media of their friendship. People thought it’s all about publicity but only those two know the truth of their friendship and the need to rely on each other. The knew the thorn path they had to take in other to become known to the world. That’s why they also support young actors like Akihito, Feilong, Momohara Ai or Tao improving their acting skill. But mostly, Asami trying to pull all of them into his mischievous act while Mikhail trying to put up with Asami kiddies antics on the set. If anyone can stop asami from his madness, just call Mikhail to put a stop to it. Asami learn to not make Mikhail upset with him in hard way in their younger days so he can’t afford a disappointed Mikhail.
Not exactly from what I thought impression:
Akihito almost want to bailed out after he reading the script and list of the A-list actors that soon to become his co artist. Especially Asami- his partner (the main actors) he is too nervous until sudou had to talked to him about three days to convices him. He end up to give the script a try, that.... also after sudou announce that he also get a part from the movie.
Asami know about Akihito kinda scare of him, and uncomfortable with his presence. He secretly plotting to make the set and himself more fun and welcoming environment towards all his colleagues. (Mikhail blame on Asami brow that always seems creasing when he thinking of something- part of his charms to scare people). He tried to make Akihito blend into the atmospheres and get into chemistry with him when they’re having reading script.
Turns out, akihito rely too much on sudou and Asami spend almost half month to get Akihito to date in order they can bond with each other, that earn too much gossips in media and Asami trying to keep Mikhail to calm down because this could effect their career and misunderstandings. (much to sudou dismay because he think Asami trying to steal his spot) too much pictures of them outside of the shooting, and rumours but the production brushes it off thinking it really good for publicity.

I wonder why sensei decided to bring Yoh back in to the picture? That and curious if Asami had known his double agent had compromised himself by getting his feelings involved would he have seen it fit to remove Yoh from the Baishe ASAP?
I really don’t know. It’s a very strange situation. Yoh has strong feelings for his boss and he doesn’t seem to wish anything wrong happening to him. He’s a very faithful man and you can trust him. That’s all I can say.
She decided to put him on the picture again when Feilong got this transaction involving Mikhaïl Arbatov. It involved a strong level of secrecy and of course, it’s not anyone who can be trusted for such a matter.
I thinght he would be a very good witness to tell Asami what happened to Feilong but I was proven wrong. Sudou is the one who warned Asami instead. So Yoh can’t fit into that role anymore.
But somehow I have the feeling we will see again very soon. Perhaps he’s getting ready himself for the future battle to come. Perhaps he will play a major role to save his beloved boss from Yuri’s assaults.
Once again I’m just speculating. Sensei is full of surprises and I am sure she has many ideas running for her characters.
As for Asami knowing about Yoh’s feelings. Asami is the type of person who reads people’s minds. He takes whatever he can to win the game. Perhaps he even used that in his advantage.
But he let it pass. He closed his eyes. If Yoh got feelings, why bother? The guy chose his side obviously. I don’t think Asami would mind him to follow his heart. Especially since he met Akihito.
He even accepted to let go his agent in Baishe. It’s telling about his state of mind! Asami despite his cold persona in front of many people, still has a heart and he’s ready to close his eyes.

Rereading the manga made me realize how much of an annoying douchebag soduo is, but also how much I feel bad for him all at the same time. I kinda want to see a redemption arc, do u think that’s a possibility?
Hey Anon!
Sudou is an annoying douchebag, but he is a very smart, very dangerous annoying douchebag, isn’t he? Plus he has an interesting background story that never got explored in detail, but that involved living in the same town with Aoki Mayu, with whom he seems to be very close friends… Humble beginnings, most certainly, and his ambition and resourcefulness did not go unnoticed if he ended up becoming a manager at Dracaena, and one of Asami Ryuichi’s trusted men.
Like, for reals. Not only did Sudou Shuu get to the top, but he also had the balls to pull a fast one on Asami, the fearsome Japan’s kingpin. He stole from Asami right under his nose. Was he careless? Yes, otherwise he wouldn’t have gotten caught. Is he mentally unstable? I have no doubts about that either, even though I am more inclined to believe that it was Akihito - and not any kind of mental illness - that made him lose his mojo. Sudou was prepared for the worst but in his mind the worst was probably to die by Asami’s hand. Instead, he gets ignored, treated like a broken toy. For a man like him, there is probably nothing worse than indifference and the awareness that the attention that he should be getting is actually being given to - in its totality - to that little brat taking pictures of him and his club.
And even then, even when Akihito was already testing his nerves in the worst possible way, Sudou made that genius, genius move to get the photographer “out of his way”:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Note that this is quite the long game. It is not the Akihito photographer he is threatened by. It is the Akihito, Asami’s lover that he can’t live with. It’s Asami’s lover he wants to get rid of. By offering Akihito his camera (and actually hoping Akihito would pick it) as opposed to the key to Asami’s penthouse, Sudou is not even attempting to avoid being investigated. It’s a “stay away from Asami” disguised as a “come at me” move, and Akihito falls for it hook, line and sinker because that’s exactly what Akihito fears: that he is nothing to Asami but a pet.
Another of Sudou’s traits that might have drawn Asami’s attention: Sudou can read people’s insecurities. He knows how to manipulate people to his advantage and in Asami’s book that is probably a valuable asset (business-wise, at least).
(Isn’t it ironic, though, that Asami himself came nowhere close to reading Akihito as well as Sudou? I suspect that’s because, coming from a low social standing himself, Sudou is aware of what power imbalance is, he knows what it is to feel inferior. Asami, on the other hand, probably never felt he was at a disadvantage, at least not when it comes to power dynamics in relationships, so he can’t even begin to process what Akihito feels when they are together.)
But I digress.
Is there a possibility for a redemption arc? Can Cray-Cray “I-will-get-off-rubbing-myself-on-your-butt-while-thinking-of-Asami" Sudou Shuu be redeemed?
There is a chance, yes, but right now all the odds are stacked against him. Unless Yuri fully occupies the “villain vacuum” in this arc, there is room for Sudou to interfere in future events and when/if he does, I don’t see how it would benefit Takaba or Asami in any way. For redemption, there needs to be a desire to change, to make amendments, to abandon his earlier plans. So far, we have seen nothing of it, on the contrary. For all we know, he has agreed to work with Mikhail as long as Mikhail found a way to set Akihito on fire.
That is as far from redemption as one can possibly be.

Per gennaio 2020, è previsto in Giappone il debutto del film sequel “Gekijouban Made in Abyss: Fukaki Tamashii no Reimei” (Made in Abyss the Movie: Dawn of the Deep Soul).
