what tips would you give startup colorists who already know simple things like color theory and manga cleaning?

hi anon!! i’m still pretty new at it, since i started at the beginning of quarantine, but here are some things i’ve picked up along the way <3

note: @bkdkdh is my biggest inspiration!!! i’ve learned a lot from their amazing colorings, and they’re super cool!

highlights. if you want a semi-realistic effect you can still have hue & saturation, but many colorists use plain white!! @/suknuas uses great ones, an example you can find here !! another example would be @/gojuo’s over here :)

you can also have random highlights of highly saturated/bright colors, like neon blue.

 don’t be afraid to be messy!!! not everyone is completely neat and clean, and being “messy” makes your art more memorable. 

to each their own: my version of being messy can be seen here where it use watercolor of amajiki’s skin tone, except on the hair. sukerokus, a very popular colorist, practices watercolor extremely well, and part of their charm is streaks or shaky lines in the background!

COLORED LINES. i cannot stress this enough. i used to simply leave the lines black, but then i would wonder why, even if we happened to color the same panel, someone else’s would look better than mine. (i’ve since realized that i had developed a toxic attitude, so thanks mr. sajben and eighth grade psychology.) i realized a lot of artists use colored lines!! whether they be vibrant or just a darker version of the skintone, it really pops out. 

@/zuura uses great colored lines here and a great example of vibrant lines is shown here by @/bkdkdh!! i’m also hopelessly in love with @/gojosattoru’s lines - i believe they retrace each mangacap themselves!!

shading with blue. i never really realized it, but almost all shadows are a shade of blue in general (i use the term blue very loosely.) i haven’t had the chance to work it into my own colorings yet, because i realized this like. five days ago. it is, however, in a lineless bkg piece i’m working on :)

a GREAT example of shading with blue is seen here by the wonderful @/bkdkdh yet again (look at the wonderful use of white for highlights!!), and here by @/sukerokus!

those are just the really really big ones, if you want a part two anon just ask!! 

if you want specific tutorials, colorists like katsukes, sugawaras, dicennio, and suknuas have great ones :)
