Ok, I know we're all still talking about the Bowuigi face grab, and don't get me wrong, it's a great scene and it deserves to be talked about, but I want to talk about my favorite scene in the movie

The Brother's Reuniting:

If you watch it, you can see Mario pull Luigi down, and press their foreheads together, before they hug. There's a battle going on right next to them- but they're only looking at each other. Holding each other, staring into the other's eyes, and just proving to themselves that they're okay.

They had to spend the entire movie apart, and in this scene, it's obvious the toll that this has taken on them. Mario even mentions in one scene that they've never been apart this long- and it happens in the middle of a new world and kingdom that they've never seen before? In the middle of a war? While one of them was locked in a dungeon, and about to sacrificed in the name of a forced wedding?

It's horrible for them, they're both on the brink of breaking down this entire movie (mostly Luigi, but Mario had his moments) and in this moment, right after Luigi almost died, where they're finally reunited, they don't care about anything elae in the world more than they care about each other.

Mario and Luigi need each other, no doubt about it. And it's not a one sided thing either- it's not cowardly Luigi needs big brother Mario to protect him- its Mario and Luigi cannot exist without each other.

I could go on for hours about how this movie shows just how much Mario needs Luigi, and I WILL, but not tonight (but probably tomorrow.).

Just, ugh, this scene was so good, and so meaningful. It's absolutely going down as one of my favorite scenes in cinema

We HAVE to talk about the forehead touch, I think it's one of my favourite moments in the entire movie. It's a tiny gesture that I think pictures how much Mario and Luigi truly care for one another. This movie perfectly captures their brotherly love and I couldn't have asked for anything more, this is all I've wanted for YEARS!

Dear Bowuigi shippers,

I am more of a Powser shipper myself, but I am so sorry that the Bowuigi scene in the trailer was literally like the only scene they had together in the movie. I too wish Luigi spent his film time in a cage 5 feet from Bowser's chair as the turtle vents about his life/plans/reasons/etc. and Luigi gives him the best empathetic advice he can deliver and Bowser kinda warms up to the guy. I also wish he planned on forcing Luigi to be this best man at his wedding (Because Bowser is clearly the best man but he can't be HIS OWN best man and Luigi is the best man he knows atm) so they can have scenes being well dressed together. I too wish Bowser would be mad that Mario stole his girl AND HIS BEST MAN on this THE DAY OF HIS WEDDING! I wish you had all the canon-allowing Bowuigi fodder that you all deserved!

The Super Mario Bros movie left me with a lot of emotions.

For real though someone at Illumination wrote ‘the brothers’ relationship is KEY’ at the top of a steno pad and then the whole studio just leaned into it. Great job.

I've decided to draw the Mario Family from the movie, as well as gave some of the members headcanon names!

Here is a non-text version and a couple o close ups

Some other headcanons I've come up with in the cut! (I just copy and pasted what I wrote on DeviantArt)

It's confirmed that Maurizio, Tony and Arthur are brothers, so it's clear that Lucy and Marie married into the family. My headcanon is that Marie married Arthur and had Nicola while Tony is single and ready to mingle. Stefano, along with his deceased wife, were immigrants from Sicily and Southern Italy respectively, making Maurizio, Arthur, and Tony second gen immigrants, and Mario, Luigi and Nicola third gen. Nicola is a little over a decade younger than Mario and Luigi.

I gave Tony green eyes because I thought he had green eyes to match Luigi's appearance in the Mario cartoons, but then realized it was just his glasses lens being tinted yellow. I still like that idea, so I went with it.

My headcanon for this particular piece is that Mario and Luigi's plumbing business became so successful since the incident that they surprised the family with a trip to Sicily...and maaaaybe they also have a few Mushroom Kingdom coins to cover some expenses...hey, gold is gold, right?

I'm highkey bummed that the Mario movie went through the trouble to confirm that Peach is not from the Mushroom Kingdom, and then proceeded to do absolutely nothing with it

I also would've loved to see Peach have an actual reaction to seeing an entire city of humans too. Like she was clearly really excited seeing Mario for the first time, and yet we never get her response to an entire world of humans just like her

I know taste is subjective, I really do. But I just got back from seeing the Mario movie for the second time and I'm still baffled by how anyone could not like it. I love how Bowser was portrayed, he's the perfect mix of cartoony villian while also managing to be a serious threat. Also his song was fantastic.

I love how much Peach cares for the Toads, she treats them like her family and it's the sweetest thing ever. I also am very fond of how she is so much more than just some damsel in distress, I know the games have done that in the past, but I do appreciate seeing it on the big screen!

And I could go on and on about how much I adore Mario and Luigi, but I don't wanna sound like a broken record. Just know that I am always thinking about them and the way they show their affection for one another makes me shrivel up and cry. Positive connotation.
