Case study and analysis of the 1992 Good Omens movie screenplay (“the shitscript”) in light of the ongoing WGA strike
As one could suspect, the topic of the 1992 Good Omens movie screenplay and its infamy has recently emerged from the depths of the fandom. In light of the ongoing WGA strike it’d be good to properly address this issue, starting with Neil Gaiman’s own recollection written in 2004:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It’s basically the same old story — of brilliant creative workers struggling under the pressure of detached studio executives and being legally forced to mutilate their work again and again for no artistic or economic reason — we’ve heard before in many different contexts.
Tumblr media
If you’re reading this and somehow still wondering why writers are fighting for their rights at the moment, their job security hasn’t changed much since then. Please follow the WGA, SAG-AFTRA, and other unions’ official channels for detailed information and ways to help the cause.
Tumblr media
Anyway, it took over a decade and an enormous effort to print the screenplay in a limited edition of 552 copies. It can’t be distributed otherwise due to IP law, but some fans shared its fragments online and heavily criticized them, dubbing the 1992 source material #shitscript
Tumblr media
There’s been obviously a lot of controversies over the changes in the plot and the relationship between the main characters. And rightfully so — the number of iterations has created something very different from the beloved book and the award-winning show we can all enjoy today.
It’s… objectively not good. Wouldn’t be considered a hit back then and certainly not by today’s standards. I don’t think I would watch it in any other way than through channel surfing. However, it’s not a monstrosity some people believe it to be and not a case of low effort.
Let’s start with the world building: the setting wasn’t changed to the US. It’s still very much based in the UK, mostly London and Tadfield, although the latter lies now by the sea and seems much more ominous. Interestingly, the British Museum becomes a prominent location as well.
The main character and the designated hero is not surprisingly Crowley, this time in his 90s anti-hero glory. If you haven’t watched many movies of this era, esp. dark fantasy, this trope involves middle-age disenchantment, cynicism, as well as hefty doses of sarcasm and brooding.
90s anti-heroes are a dark, grim, and unnecessarily violent embodiment of power fantasy, matching the destructive ideology of that time. Combined with uber-masculinity and performative strength over weaker characters, nowadays they naturally evoke more cringe or worry than awe.
1992 iteration of Crowley is basically in his Furfur era. Deeply unhappy and stuck in a dead end job, all he talks about is how he hates Earth and his assignment here, considering a transfer to Alpha Centauri as his one and only possibility of career advancement. Or life, really.
The talking part is important here, because he clearly compensates by insulting everything and everyone. He hates on the whole planet at length only to confess that he’d rather stay here with Aziraphale due to “no good restaurants”, “no decent bottle of wine” in Alpha Centauri.
Yes, he’s verbally abusive in his automatic response to stress. But doesn’t hate Aziraphale. In one particular scene he calls Azi stupid twice only to assure him that they are friends and to offer to solve the problem when he sees that his words were taken seriously and hurt him.
Crowley refers to him as “my angel” and “my dear Aziraphale”, agrees to Aziraphale’s suggestion of sharing a room, praises the angel as a “miracle worker around the home”, drinks the tea he makes for him, and generally proves to be much softer towards him than he wants to admit.
Aziraphale, on the contrary, wears his heart on his sleeve. He’s the one engineering ways to spend more time together, following Crowley around, checking up on him (including miracling himself into his apartment and office when no one answers the door), offering help right away.
He’s successfully calming Crowley down through his anxiety attacks, overcomes his dislike of heights (!) for Crowley, directly challenges him and even breaks rules only to make Crowley stay with him. Crowley seems to be his main motivation in this movie, not the saving the world.
1992 Aziraphale also has the most badass scene in the whole Good Omens multiverse to date, taking a 180 degree turn from the typical guardian angel we all know and love to the real angel of wrath protecting Crowley from harm in his true form.
But there’s no Their Side in this universe. The only semblance of that concept appears in the context of Anathema not representing either of their respective bosses, but humanity. “That’s the trouble with the humans. They’re on their own side.”
This Crowley appears not as much on Hell’s side as under Satan’s heel. He’s scared of him and subservient, and needs Aziraphale to prevent his escape as a pretext to do what is right. He lets the angel stop him by pretending that he doesn’t even see him cheating during their duel.
By finally standing up to his toxic boss (Satan is like Gabriel during the body-swapped trial, suave and cruel) and leaving Hell’s side to do good, Crowley takes an emancipated and employee-focused stance instead of fighting for his relationship with Aziraphale like shown in S1.
Which is a shame, but matches the overall tone of the screenplay and the times it was written in. The concept of free will, while simplified in a true Hollywood-style to issues like mind control and fear, is still crucial to this interpretation of the Good Omens original plot.
Especially the character of Anathema is seen fighting both of these things. There’s no Agnes Nutter with her prophecies here, only a 21-year-old witch and her will to thwart the ultimate evil versus her fear of doing it at a cost of one boy’s life, versus Satan’s brainwashing.
Madame Tracy appears slightly redesigned as a new character as well, but isn’t 𝘲𝘶𝘪𝘵𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 for the most part. She’s been enjoying her youth way too much to see how fast it was fleeting, and this sudden realization left her in shock from which she denies to come back.
Unfortunately she’s also the one who took in baby Adam and now stays under his care. The level of his parentification is unnerving, much like his bullying and loneliness. He struggles to be loved and ask for love, which becomes his main quest beyond, y’know, the apocalypse thing.
Don’t worry, despite everything all ends well just like in the book. The family of two gets a chance to start again on much healthier terms and Anathema to live for herself for the first time in years. Our heroes get back in their car, Crowley tempting Aziraphale with an apple.
All in all, this whole post is a very long reminder for Amazon Prime to #PayYourWriters, #PayYourActors, and #RenewGoodOmens! The strike is still ongoing and crucial for any new content for this and many other fandoms #GiveMeS3orGiveMeDeath

Hey Gina! I don’t exactly know how to talk about this so i apologise if it’s worded weird, but I wanted to talk about polari! :) Also want to quickly preface by saying A.) I am a part of the LGBTQ+ community, B.) while I’m not English, I am Scottish (Glasgow) and we use some of the same slang as (specifically Northern) England & C.) I have a lot of hetero English friends who know absolutely nothing about polari.
(Quickly before I start as u/ppl may find this annoying; I’ve said Scottish separately as a lot of Scottish ppl, myself included, don’t like being referred to as English/British as majority of us are currently wanting & trying to gain independence from the U.K. lol & I included British instead of just Scotland/England as I’m not sure if it’s used anywhere else in great britian/the UK - please say if it is! :D )
I’m not sure if you’ve seen this too but I see quite a lot of people saying that Louis solely knowing/using polari speech is proof/semi-proof of him being queer or knowing queer history - I have to completely disagree with this.
Polari is used very commonly (some examples I can think of off the top of my head are bevvy, lallies and naff as I use them quite a lot.) in day-to-day conversation in scotland/england (as I mentioned, I have hetero english friends and they use polari ALL THE TIME, like they use only refer to a alcohol/drinks as bevvy, and have no absolutely no idea that it IS in fact polari..). People use it without even knowing what it is, especially those who are lower/working class and/or neds/chavs (which Louis seems to use as? Or want to be perceived as?) and are more likely to use slang. I guarantee you that if you were to go down to England (especially the north) and asked what bevvy meant, they’d almost 100% be able to tell you what means - but they won’t know the origins of the word, they’d just think it’s slang (they probably wouldn’t even know it’s used in Scotland too LOL).
I’ve seen absolutely no other scottish/english/british person talk about this so I feel like majority of the people speaking about polari are Americans (not all & not only, of course, but I feel like they majority of larries are American? Haha) who don’t actually use it or understand it’s use in modern day England/Scotland/U.K. and that’s why they’re saying that he must be queer to use it because they think that it’s not used anymore when it actually is! :)
I’m so sorry if this is a complete jumble of words, I’m absolutely horrible at writing my thoughts down hahah! I pray you understand what I’m trying to say. I hope this isn’t coming across as rude or mean. I’m not meaning it that way at all. Also, this isn’t meant to be a dig at Americans/non-scottish/english/great British folk either, it’s completely normal that you wouldn’t know this! :)
Sorry again hahaha I’ve been thinking about this for a really long time and have been dying to get this off my chest !! + I haven’t used tumblr in years so if the layout/format(??) is weird, apologies for that too, I’m also on mobile :( Thank u (if u do) for reading my long ass ramble lol :D I just wanted to shed some light on this.
Hi, honey. I think assuming Louis’ sexuality only based on him being aware of/using Polari is pretty silly. As you say, straight people in your part of the world use certain words regularly without being aware of it.
As always, I think one has to take many behaviors and actions into consideration when wondering if Louis (or anyone) is signaling. There’s a difference between using certain words that have become common, and knowing what Polari is. Him wearing that brand goes hand in hand with many instances of him wearing clothing that sent a message (for example, wearing the All Out, Queen’s Surf, and Rainbow Apple logo shirts). At that time, he seemed to be very calculated about what messages he sent through clothing. I think Polari was one of many instances of Louis signaling being a part of the community. But I’d never look at that as an isolated instance and think that.

Rhys Darby: Have fun, it keeps you young
Tumblr media
I bought this fine piece of dandy in a Vegas thrift store. It's perfect for hosting a Ponsonby quiz night.
Don't be ridiculous, there's no cut-off age to letting loose.
Last week, I hosted a quiz night. I know ... remember when I used to be in movies?
Oh well, it was for my kids' school, so I felt good about it. Besides, I got to wear my sparkling Vegas suit. It's a fine piece of dandy I bought in a thrift store in LA. It's baby blue in colour and bedazzled with diamond-like gems. Perfect for hosting a Ponsonby quiz night.
The school seems to be in pretty good shape. Unfortunately the same can't be said for my kids. I took them away from the country for three months touring the UK and they didn't get ill once, but after being deposited back in their local institutions, they were both as sick as dogs within a week.
Schools and daycares certainly are breeding grounds for viruses. Both my boys were hit with chesty coughs and conjunctivitis.
It's near impossible to deposit eye drops into a two-year-old's eyes. We just held him back and used the surprise technique. That works only once. After that, we simply dropped the the liquid as close to the facial region as possible and then tipped him about until it rolled into the sockets. The poor little guy came into our bedroom at 3AM with one of his eyes glued shut with goo.
"Look, Mummy and Daddy, I'm a pirate!"
Children are amazing. It doesn't matter how they're feeling, their glass is always half full. Half full of chocolate milk with sprinkles on top. I hope I never lose my child-like sensibilities.
Being an adult weighs you down, man. I think it's important for us all to let loose once in a while and do something youthful. That's why I still skateboard to work. It's invigorating to have the wind in your hair as you whizz past the suits holding onto their coffees. Sure, now and then I get pointed at, even laughed at. But hey, I'm used to that.
I often wonder, what is the cut-off age for youthful fun? I see lots of men in their 30s skating on longboards. My right-hand man "Buttons" even bought a special pushing pole so he could grace his way along the paths like a punter in Venice. Was he ridiculed? Of course, but that has nothing to do with his pole.

I think it comes down to "coolness levels". It's okay for a man in his late 50s to surf the ocean waves because it's rad. But when you see a man in his 40s riding a razor scooter along Ponsonby Rd it just seems a little sad.
I say, "to hell with it".
Ride, skate and surf to your heart's content. If you're still breathing then you should still be having fun. Just choose your activity wisely. On a ridicule scale of 1 to 10, cycling is a 1 but unicycling is a solid 8.5 unless you're wearing a sparkling Vegas suit, in which case it's a 10.

talkin bout practice not a game not a game
hey yall
band practice for the upcoming EU/UK tour starts tomorrow! very. exciting. stuff. honestly, i'm just a tad bit nervous. it feels like a big sort of tour. the kind that we really have to put a lot of muscle and elbow grease and, of course, luuuuv into. with us, everything always comes together last minute. and i do mean everything. for some reason i can never seem to remember that though and i freak out like a crazy person with some serious anxiety issues. anyway, now that we're really all going to get in there and start rehearsals, everything will fall into place. on the one hand, you have to work at it to make that happen... and on the other hand, well... you've got to let it happen.
so, i'm pretty sure most of you have heard about Miles, who's been playing drums with us on the past few tours. Miles got into a crazy golf cart accident (i know, it sounds a little nuts but it's for real). he really f-d up just about one whole side of his body. mostly his face and shoulder, it seems like. poor dude is such a trooper. today, when i swung by the place we're going to be rehearsing, he was there and i was pretty surprised at his attitude in spite of how torn up he looked. torn up is a lot different than turnt up, by the way. not at all a good thing! we are not positive that he'll be on this next tour with us but we are going to figure it all out one way or another and the show will go on! we're just so damn thankful that Miles is alright and not only is he getting all the right care but he's also in as good of spirits as i can possibly imagine one being in his situation. feel free to send him some extra love if you're surfing the web with nothing to do - his twitter handle is @mileskmcpherson.
in the meantime, from now 'til the start of our tour, there is so much to do. first things first, we have a million interviews and promotional stuff we're working on for all these upcoming shows. lots of basic rehearsals. i've got a million merch emails to sort through, which is, for the most part, one of my favorite jobs to have. then the three of us really have to dig in to finish the show, production and set list and everything. the most obnoxious thing i have to do is to figure out exactly what i want to wear for the shows. this may seem like it would be a simple task for a t-shirt and jeans kind of gal but ohhhh no. it's the hardest thing EVERY TIME! i don't really enjoy the process of packing a separate stage uniform but it's just becoming necessary. now that i'm getting older, i have this fantasy of having this great stage outfit that looks sick in pictures but feels as comfy as my regular day time clothes. the truth is, no outfit of that sort exists. slight growing pains. what's more important to me? living out my freddie mercury dreams, blazing the stage and feeling awesome... or just the simple joy of being comfortable? when i really think down to the core of my issue, it all just has to do with the fact that i'm growing up. my tastes are way different than they were. but you know what? i'm a lot older than i was when i started getting up onstage, wearing the t-shirt i slept in the night before and one of the only two pair of jeans thrown into my suitcase 5 minutes before walking out the door to get in the van. i want a little more... i EXPECT a little more of myself. it doesn't even feel like a burden so much as growing pains. growing pains are a good thing because... duh. you're growing. alright, so expect a sequined purple unitard with bright red legs and a tiara. shit's getting real. paramore 3.0!!!! taylor and jeremy are glittering their beards!
when i was a kid, my dad would take me to ultimate fun world every other sunday and we'd ride go-karts and play arcade games. around the time i was 9, i started to get the worrrrst growing pains in my ankles and around the lower parts of my legs. it sounds funny but pushing on the gas pedal of the go-kart and driving around seemed to ease the discomfort cause i'd be stretching my leg out and putting pressure on my foot while stepping on the gas pedal so hard it hit the floor board. we'd drive all day. i'd race every kid on the track and sometimes dad would ride with me and other times we'd even race each other. by the time we were done, i'd be laughing so hard and smiling so big that the pains in my leg were hardly noticeable and for some reason to this day i think about all that.
the weirdest part of this whole entry is that all i came here to say is this... we are incredibly excited about the next few months of life, paramore, music, everything. i, personally, have this feeling that even though we want to put on the biggest shows we've ever put on, they will still feel incredibly intimate to us and hopefully to you too. that energy is what i live for and as much as i go back and think on all the incredible memories we made at tiny hole-in-the-wall places with a few hundred people... the way it feels to know that we've really grown and come all this way with you is completely and stupidly overwhelming in the best way possible. thanks for all of it. remember this, as much as we are pressing the pedal to the metal, you are driving this freaking go-kart. you are the reason we've gotten where we are. let's make more ridiculous memories. see you soon, over there!
-h
(i don't proofread since having earned my diploma in 2006, so i'm sorry for all the errors, misspells, and mistakes)

name: Jess/Jessie/Jessica (not my real name but shh)

birthday: December 22
height: 163 cm (I think that’s 5′4″ or something like that)
time: 4:39 am
favorite bands/artists: Toto 💖, Joseph Williams, Steve Lukather. the rest is artists I’ve liked recently according to last.fm because my memory is nonexistent: Leo Sayer, Journey, Christopher Cross, The Cars, Heart, Bee Gees, Huey Lewis & The News, Electric Light Orchestra, Spooky Tooth. I also like Rick Astley, Mika, Take That, Paul Williams and Tom Cardy.
last movie: Thor: Love and Thunder
last show: Only Murders in the Building
when did i create this blog: sometime in 2011, I think
what i post: uhh.. whatever I like, pretty much. fandom stuff, art, mental health stuff, queer stuff, personal posts that are waaaaay too personal probably
last thing i googled: ‘Joseph Williams rare tracks album download’ (I found what I was looking for, yay 😎)
other blogs: nope
do i get asks: yeah! though I usually either see them super late, or I wait to reply and forget :(

instruments: none (I was forced to learn acoustic guitar twice, but my hands were too small?? I don’t know, it didn’t work, and I had to play shitty Schlager songs so I gave up. then I tried to learn electric guitar but I was bad at that too. also tried keyboards a few years ago but I have a lot of pain in my hands now and it wasn’t worth it for me, I’m fine with just listening to music)
what i’m wearing:  um, shorts and a tank top because it’s still 25°C in my apartment
dream job: artist (in theory, I wouldn’t actually want that and I’d be very bad at it)
dream trip: don’t like travelling, it makes me too anxious. though I’d travel to see Toto again, that was (almost) worth it. and there's a lot of UK comedians that I'd like to see live someday, so maybe that too.

favorite song: all time: Georgy Porgy by Toto, and Surf Music by Paul Williams. right now: Burn by Toto. just in this exact moment until I get tired of listening to it on repeat: My One by Joseph Williams
last book i’ve read: I.. don’t remember. it was in like February, I think. I started reading ‘The Gospel According to Luke’ (Steve Lukather’s autobiography) at some point after that and had a tiny breakdown about it and since then I haven’t read anything at all 🙃
top 3 fictional universes i would like to live in: I won’t think about this too much and just say what comes to mind. Star Trek (I want to be Data’s best friend), Columbo (I’d just like him to solve my murder okay), What We Do in the Shadows (vampires are cool and Guillermo is even cooler).

HELLO! I am desperately trying to find a specific ziam fanfic.
I remember it being on AO3 and it was very long. It was set on a beach and I believe it was spring break, or maybe summer break, and I believe they started off as enemies. Zany was labeled as the arrogant rich guy. I think there was a moment where they threw paint on each other.
If you could help me find this I would be SO great full
Hi nonnie!
I don't know which fic this could be. It doesn't ring any bell for me ://
Sorry to tag you @ziamfanfiction but do you know this fic?
---
Update:
@larrieblr suggested these two fics that don't entirely fit, but could help you!
Let Your Waves Crash Down on Me by orphan_account

This summer. This beach. This wave-ridden town Zayn let Niall drag him to for the summer after their first year of Uni is wearing thin against his skin. It's all fading away: Niall's despise for one Louis Tomlinson, the constant hookups, the faces he won't remember, the days under the sun and the nights drunken beneath the stars. The taste of a summer crush on some silly lifeguard. He's want it all to go away, especially this lingering feeling of not wanting to watch Liam burn out like the orangey sun.
One last party before the summer dies is all he needs. Well, that and Liam's heart.
Never the Same Tide Twice by sunfair
wc: 34292 | rating: Explicit
pairing: Zayn Malik/Liam Payne
tags: Recreational Drug Use, Surfing, Secret Identity, Alternate Universe
Zayn is a successful pop star from the UK, transplanted to LA. He is the product of completely contrived and neatly packaged PR and marketing, including a fake name. Liam Payne is a professional surfer who lives alone in a bungalow on the beach, taking a break after a string of successful competitions. When their paths cross accidentally and it's clear that Liam doesn't recognize him in the slightest, Zayn drops his tired pretenses for the opportunity just to be himself for once.
@louistomlionson suggested one that has paint in it, but doesn't fit your rich Zayn description!
Not Happening by scottmcniceass
wc: 52319 | rating: Explicit
pairing: Zayn Malik/Liam Payne, Possible Harry Styles/Louis Tomlinson

Zayn and Liam are roommates. They hate each other. (Most of the time.)

What is something you don’t have any natural talent for?
Balance sport - skateboarding, surfing etc which sucks
Did you watch this year’s Eurovision?
Nope
Have there been any periods in your life that could be described as being chaotic?
Yes, pretty sure I have consistently had chaotic moments throughout
What is something you frequently forget?
I would say I am pretty good at remembering most things, I write things down in my calendar. Maybe when my life picks up the pace a little, I will start forgetting things.
If I looked in your fridge right now, what would I find?
Cheese, yoghurt, peppers, cucumber, celery, hummus, milk and much more. Very much an ingredient household.
How do you feel about your body?
Yikes. It is a work in progress. I'm trying to get into an active routine but I know it will change when I get a job.
Who is someone you would like to get to know better?
I don't think I have met them yet!
What is something that turned out for the best recently?
My friend invited me last minute to see Renee Rapp in London. I technically was busy but could have rearranged things if I really wanted. I said that 2024 was the year where I wanted to see more artists live but I am glad I didn't go because:
The tickets were standing and I'm not about that rock n roll life, much prefer seated tickets, that way I'm not packed into a crowd like a sardine. I watched a live stream of the concert and I joined at a moment where there was a break, for the concert employees to give out water to the crowd because it was so hot in the venue. Just from the concert stream I was feeling claustrophobic! (Maybe 2024 will be about learning about myself better and being okay with it!)
It is an hours journey into London and the venue was North London so essentially it adds an extra 30 mins to the journey time. Living at home means my sociable hours are limited to during daylight but as soon as it is night, I am indoors. Ofc when I move out I will go to any event at any time mostly because I won't have the stress of getting back at a certain time and feel guilty if I am keeping anyone up. And ofc there will be plenty of opportunities later in the year to see artists live, this won't be the last time :)
If you had to move to a new city, where would you move?
I would love to live and work in Paris for a while.
Have you ever travelled on a double-decker train?
I think the train from Paris to Versailles was a double decker.
What’s your opinion on assisted suicide?
Pro
At what point do you consider a relationship to be ‘long-term?’
After the first year mark.
What jobs did your parents have when you were growing up?
IT jobs
Do they still have these jobs? Or different jobs? Or have they retired?
Both retired.
Do you own any winter sports equipment?
Not yet but love to get into skiing.
Do you have a cell contract plan, or are you on a pre-paid plan?
Umm I own my phone and just pay monthly.

Up early for our excursion to Corcovado National Park, with our 4 new friends from the UK (2 originally Irish, one Scot, and one Brit). We had breakfast and met our guide, Tony. Then down to the boat for about a 30 minute ride to the park, with sea a little rougher today, but not too bad.
Tony is extremely knowledgeable and we started with driving up the river a bit, and he pointed out many species of birds, faster than I could record them. We’d heard a bit about Tony from Fernando last night, they’d been out birding together that evening. We stopped at an island just outside the park where Tony told us about the brown footed boobies. They came from somewhere in South America to nest here, and had a fuzzy white baby chick with them.
Landing was a little more exciting with the surf up, but the boat pilot navigated it well and timed it perfectly. We’d been instructed to wear closed toed shoes while hiking in the park, so Jeff and I took off our shoes and jumped in barefoot. We were met by an officer, not terribly friendly, not terribly friendly. It was her job to inspect our backpacks to ensure we weren’t bringing in any disposable plastic bottles.
Tony was a fantastic guide for the park. He told me in the early 1980s he had his first opportunity to come to the United States. They took a bus tour from Washington DC to Tucson Arizona. In Tucson, he lived with the family for eight months. The trip was funded by several central American governments for them to learn farming practices and bring what they learned back to Costa Rica. Tony said he was 24 years old before he ever heard anybody speak English, so going to the United States was a crash course for him. Tony grew up in the area near what is now this national park. It was amazing to hear him describe how he worked with his grandfather when he was a child to take down trees in the rainforest and burn them, then level the fields to plant rice, beans and bananas, and have space for cattle. The area he walked us through first had been the farm, and he pointed out the new growth of the rainforest only about 45 years old, and lots of remnants of banana trees.
The sign said to stay on the path, but that didn’t apply to Tony, apparently. He had on knee-high rubber boots, and he would call for a bird, listen for a reply, and then go trapsing into the jungle expecting us to follow him - a bit out of my comfort zone of course. We were able to see about a half dozen different kinds of birds. I didn’t retain all the names, nor did I really get photos. He also found several hiding places of bats, and we disturbed a few of them and they flew off in a huff. It was very hot, and very humid with no breeze. Jeff and I both felt ourselves getting lightheaded.
Soon, we looped around and went back to the pavilion where we had a snack and freshened our water bottles, and had another shot at the bano, then we went across the river to the area of the old growth rain forest. By then other groups were starting to arrive, and I think Tony led us on the loop backwards from the way most people do it, because we didn’t encounter many groups until we were walking out of the forest . Tony let us down to the beach as we heard the Scarlet macaw in the trees down there. It was fantastic to stand on the beach and watch three macaws feeding on some kind of nut. Jeff and I had watched Mackay on the beach a few days ago With similar behavior pattern. Tony said the macaw beak cracks the nut with 100 pounds of pressure. Whoa, keep your fingers away! They flew off together and it was simply majestic!
Back in the forest, Tony had us stay on the main path while he went down a side path. He was looking for a sloth that had been there a few days ago, but the sloth had moved? We Trudged on, and soon we came upon several families of Coati, several moms with lots of little babies. They were adorable to watch. Tony had a lot to tell us about who in the jungle is prey, and who’s predator, up and down the chain. The Coati eat crocodile eggs and I can’t remember what kind of animal feeds on the Coati.
Back to the ranger station, and our boat arrived about noon. On our way back to Aguila, we stopped at a beach I recognized as San Josecito (love how familiar we are with the area now), and picked up the boys from last night’s band. Looking forward to another show tonight.
We had another delicious lunch, sat with two ladies from the UK. They live in London and on the Isle of Skye. Charlotte is a landscape designer with work all over the UK and Scandinavia - cool! After lunch, I retreated to the hammock. Scrolled through email, read a bit and napped until it was time to shower and head down to Happy Hour. While I was in the shower, it started raining outside - heavy rain. We grabbed our large umbrellas and headed down to the Jungle Bar, enjoying the rain - the smell, the noise and the moisture in the air!
We played a couple of games of cribbage and chatted with some others. G&T was mighty refreshing, but I just couldn’t eat much of the tuna tartare appetizer tonight!
7pm dinner bell, and the music started right on cue. We met some new arrivals, but didn’t chat a lot as the music was the show again! Just after dessert was served, it started raining again really hard, and blew into the first layer of the restaurant! The band moved a bit more towards to the center of the room, as did most of us! And then we lost power. There was an emergency flood light over the desk, giving us a bit of light, and the singer’s amp was battery operated, as he kept singing even though the accompanying keyboard had stopped. It was awesome!! Fernando called it “Jungle Charm” and I can’t think of a better term. The power came on after about 15 minutes, and most of us took advantage of that to head back to our rooms. I heard the next day that the band kept playing … wish we’d have stayed!
