[D]eviance and mischief. [...] [F]urtive [...]. [O]ther poetically inspiring words: secretive, surreptitious, clandestine, covert, conspiratorial, oblique [...]. We must fold these small acts of love and creativity and play (and laughter and irreverence and whimsy) into other resistant projects against white supremacy [...]. In various trans-American imaginaries, the boonies are raced as nonproductive land inhabited by people who are not fully part of the Western episteme. [...] Caribbean(ist) people are familiar with el monte, the hills, or les mornes. El monte is always just around the corner, encroaching, sprouting persistently [...] amid the rubble of hurricane disasters or abandoned plantation and industrial sites. [...] The hills, like much of our hemisphere, are sites of damage containing the residual energy of violence, [...] the “places of irresolution.” [...] [T]urn over rocks and push thorny vines to the side to find wet dirt, small creatures, and, perhaps, delightful hidden treasures [...]. I open my hands so that these and other surprises "jump into [them] with all the pleasures of the unasked for and the unexpected" [...]. Remaining open to these gifts of the nonhuman natural world [...]. How much ruddier might we be against the multiheaded hydra of white supremacy as “a world of mutually-flourishing companions” [...]?

---
Every day I wake up and rehearse the person I would like to be. […] To use the words of [...] C.L.R. James, “every cook can govern.” [...] [T]his is what happens when people consciously decide to come together and “shape change,” to think with Octavia Butler. And to move through the world with the intention of making it a better place for living creatures to inhabit. […] And most importantly, it’s an invitation to join in. And it is a reminder that liberation is not a destination but an ongoing process, a praxis. Every day, groups of parents, librarians, nurses, temp workers, ordinary people, tired of the horrors of the present, come together to decide what kind of world they want to inhabit. […] [W]e bear witness to rehearsal, study, experimentation in form, a multiplicity of formations of struggle being waged, often most strongly by people for whom freedom has been most denied. [...] “If We Must Die”: “Pressed to the wall, dying, but fighting back!” [...] [F]or so many people, whether abandoned by the state [...] or abandoned by society in a carceral site, fighting back, by virtue of necessity as well as of ethics, is building, always building. This is the freedom work, and the love work, and the care work, of rehearsal.

---
The no of refusal is a mode of survival: an impenetrable boundary, silent or shouted. It is a refusal to be killed or to succumb [...]. Vast ecosystems flattened for plantations and fields, raw minerals pulled from the ground and sea for the building of nation-states [...]. Being-with requires a pause from which to imagine this otherwise, in all of its vastness and uncertainty. [...] To be-with [...] needs a disposition of attentiveness, listening, curiosity and noticing, [...] a "pedagogy of deep engagement". [...] The scale of violence [...] is immeasurable. [...] The immensity of the loss of people and ecologies to capitalist brutalities exceeds what we can comprehend. But [...] so do the myriad, and insuppressible flourishings and alliances, the joyfulness and love, the lives lived otherways. Attunement leads us to the gaps and silences and soundings that run through everything [...]. [T]hose imaginations of life [...] might rise to the surface.

9/11 and Melted Steel.
Tumblr media
Hey, FB is still trash. Proof? I saw this image on a page I don't follow on there. "Suggested" to me.
The amount of people flipping out because of a RAINBOW JACKET is mind-numbing. Also, apparently the "steel beam" thing is still going.
Setting aside the rainbow jacket and fragile toxic masculinity and "fear of the woke" I want to talk about the "Jet fuel burn steel beams" thing.
Steel beams in skyscrapers are almost all load bearing. Especially near the center and corners. This is a huge problem when laying out the interior. Floorplans have to be designed to work around those. Anyone curious about that, I can't remember the exact source I got on that fact, but there are a lot of design podcasts out there you can find that information on.
Jet fuel burns extremely hot and extremely fast. Around 1000 degrees Celsius. (1880 degrees Fahrenheit) Steel, like what the towers had, melt at 2500 Degrees Fahrenheit. On paper, wouldn't cause the fall, right?
That doesn't mean that the temp wouldn't weaken the beams. It 100% would. Especially if the area around it is on fire, like it would have been following the impact. A sustained temp as high as the interior of the building was would weaken the steel. Making it incapable of holding the weight. This, combined with the force of said impact would weaken the load-bearing steel beams.
This would cause the floors above to fall, rapidly.
When stopping at a rapid pace, the speed of the stop determines the amount of energy transferred to the place it lands. This formula: F=mv/t.
Force=mass times velocity all divided by time. Newton's laws. Basic physics.
Requires an equivalent force to stop it.
If this force isn't provided by the object it's falling on, it will continue to fall. Picking up mass as it continues. This causes a cascading failure of the floors to stop the ones above. Causing a collapse of the building the way that we saw it.
Side note, the fuel was higher than 1000 Degrees. The fuel inside the jet engine can reach temps of 2200 Degrees Celsius. Which IS higher than the melting point of steel.
So, in summary, No, Jet fuel can't melt steel beams typically, but they can WEAKEN THEM. Fucking morons.

NEW YEAR’S DAY 2024 4:10 PM
Tumblr media
(I love her bathroom!)
What's for dinner tonight?
Pork & sauerkraut with garlic mashed potatoes!
Do you prefer cold or room temperature drinking water?
Cool, not cold. So, closer to room temp. I don’t put ice in my water.
How many different things have you had to drink today?
Water with my morning pill and two mugs of instant espresso with fat-free half & half and a little sugar. About to have my third and final.
When you read a book, do you use a bookmark or simply dog ear/fold the top of the page?
USUALLY, I just remember the page number I’m on.
What's the nearest city to you with a population of at least one million?
Philadelphia is the one PA city with 1mil+.
During the pandemic, did you use reusable or disposable masks?
Both. I bought us reusable masks at first, but learned I preferred the disposables.
What is your favourite local restaurant?
There aren’t a whole lot of “local” restaurants here, but I’ll say Vince’s for their chicken salad wrap.
Have you ever been harassed while minding your own business walking down the street?
Of course.
Do you own a gun? Have you ever thought about getting one?
No; yes.
Do you know anyone who owns a gun?
Tons of people.
What year is/was your 10 year high school reunion? Will you (or did you) attend?
2020, and no.
Do you cut your sandwiches into triangles or rectangles?
Either-or.
Have you ever seen a panda in real life? Where was it?
At zoos, I’m sure.
Are there any postcards hanging around the house? If so, where are they from?
No.
Does it snow where you live?
Yes. It snowed right at midnight the big, chunky, heavy snowflakes and it was magical.
When was the last time you took a flight? Where did you go?
Aug. ‘21, to Mexico — Cancún airport. I had paid $6K (all-inclusive resort & flights) for my husband and me to travel with our friends to Punta Cana again this past August, but we had to take the loss and stay back because the house we bought that we knew we belonged in was going up for auction during our vacation. We won though! 🤍 Side note: it wasn’t a foreclosure; farm auctions are popular around here. It’s a great way to make tons of money if you’re selling a home with a farm or lots of land.
Is there a flight path over your house?
Yep.
Does your neighbourhood have a lot of hills?
We do live on a mountain.
Have you ever had covid? What was your experience like?
Just once, to my knowledge. It was mid-Jan. ‘21. I had my usual flu-like symptoms of severe body aches, headache, and feeling like I’m freezing. It was a 24-hour ailment.
Do you have any alcohol in your house right now?
Yes.
Do you tend to keep alcohol around the house for when you might want it?
I don’t drink, but my husband does.
Has a romantic partner ever given you a pet as a gift?
No.
Do you ever talk on the phone with friends?
No.
What was the last thing someone said to you in person?
My son was explaining to me how he slipped out of the trampoline since it’s wet.
Are you hungry right now? What would you like to eat?
Nah.
How far away are your parents right now?
I don’t know where my mother is, but she lives 7.5 miles away. My father is deceased.
Do you believe in aliens?
I do.
Have you ever been bitten by a spider?
I believe so.
Do you own any clothing made from animal products like leather or fur?
No.
What's the best vacation you've ever been on?
My favorite was Oct. ‘17 when my husband and I took our four little kids (and my mom for help) to Disney World for a week over my daughter’s sixth birthday. Our kids were 15 months, just shy of 4, just turning 6, and just shy of 7. 🥹 They’re now 7½, 10, 12, and 13! 😭

"L'évadé J. Collingan repris après une chasse à l'homme mouvementée," Montreal-Matin. May 5, 1943. Page 1 & 3.
The eighty-fifth episode of De Algemene Verwarring was broadcast on Monday January 23, 2023, and you can listen to it by clicking on the link below that will take you directly to the Mixcloud page:
https://www.mixcloud.com/MedialabKortrijk/de-algemene-verwarring-85-23-januari-2023/
Pictured below is Mark E. Smith from The Fall, no introduction needed I guess. Probably a bit weird that only after 84 episodes we use a picture from The Fall on the Tumblr page, one of the most played bands in our radio show (and yes, we do think about the photos we use on this page, I actually have a list of the photos used so as not to use a photo of the same band twice). It’s already been 5 years since Mark E. Smith passed away, and even though I’m a fan of their older work, still he is missed. The track I played in this show, Solicitor In Studio, comes from the Room To Live album, generally considered as not one of their best, but I disagree with that general opinion. Yes, it was released in between two master pieces, Hex Enduction Hour and Perverted By Language (my favorite album of the band), but that does not mean it’s a bad album. It’s useful to read Stephen Hanley’s book to know the circumstances under which the album was recorded (not ideal, i would say), but the result is a Fall album that has its place in their discography.
By the way, I know I am a bit late with this post and the only reason isthat sometimes inspiration to write something is lacking. Let me know if you read this and if these posts are interesting for you. It would be much easier for me to just post playlists but if you’re interested in my writings about the bands I play, you should let me know and I’ll do my best to continue. Anyway, other music in this episode is from i.a. Civic, Tyvek, Mitraille, Oi Boys, Josef K, The Flying Lizards, Puppet Wipes, Non Plus Temps, The Darling Buds, Hood, and Brannten Schnüre. And below the photo you can find the playlist for this show. Enjoy!

Note
plots, please, with jason!
1. Main Verse Karen: The awkwardness of meeting a girl who looks just like your ex, amirite? Definitely many awkward times to come between them.
2. Punisher Page: Page could be in Bon Temps chasing down different factions of the Hand. And meeting Jason that way.
3. Queenpin Page: she’s there to rule the world…but honestly she’d probably show up in Bon Temps to buy land/businesses and meeting that way.

Pics:
1 & 2. Thomson, English author of "The Seasons", "Rule Britannia", etc...
3. Original cover to "The Seasons."
4 & 5. Beautiful cover of the British anthem "Rule Britannia" & a page of it set to music.
6 & 7. Ads for Lovecraftian beverages!!
8. Another shot of the Seekonk River, surrounded by woods.
1913: Output, Part 2.
Plot: This poem starts out with a Latin quote by William Wordsworth¹, but, originally from Virgil's "Georgics", Book 2: "...The wide open fields: the caves &... lakes; But, ...cold Tempe², ...the roaring of the borne³ &... soft sleep under the tree, are not absent⁴."
In the beginning, Lovecraft demands that the Dryads⁵ "Turn... from towns to (thoughts) of a rural kind; Amid decadent sights⁶, a spot disclose, where... woodlands repose. Where... time has... left, unchanged, our ancestral⁷ land."
Right away, Howard joins happiness with his youth & the park -
"Quinsnicket! Haven of the wearied heart... Whose shady glens... years dissolve... & lead backwards to a happier day."
Then, HPL 'explains' why this is so -
"With mankind, the sweetest days are 1st; ...Men become more wretched as they live⁷!"
As for why nature helps the weary soul -
"Away, Reality! And let us roam (in) Quinsnicket's realm - Imagination's home."
Lovecraft then describes Providence quickly -
"What city of the blest... Whose spires & domes reflect... morning rays (&) whose gold paved⁸ (streets!) astound."
Now, Howard gets mythological -
"In yonder pool we... expect, timid Nymph⁹ or Satyr¹⁰ to detect. Our eyes for Naiads¹¹ scan, And (our) ears strain to hear the pipes of Pan¹²."
Here, we turn to a more physical description -
"Yon rocky bluff, above the water's side, Defies the ages with primeval pride."
Then, HPL drags in the aboriginals, never mentioning a specific nation's name¹³ -
"(Their) council flame burned (before) the tribe¹⁴ (with) chief & braves of copper hue... (with a) sober look... pipe passed thru & fro..."
Amazingly enough, the most racial that Lovecraft gets is "(Their) war dance to tom-toms blow¹⁵."
Notes:
1. What a great name for a writer! William Wordsworth was an English Poet Laureate who helped usher in the Romantic Era of 1800 to 1850.
He's best known for his poems "The Prelude" & "Daffodils."
2. Tempe is the name of a wooded valley between Mt. Ossa & Mt. Olympus in Thessaly, Greece - now called Tembi.
Has 1 of the highest amounts of rain in the world.
3. This verse sounds a lot like being "carried" on a "roaring" river current...
4. The quote is about 1's youth & the 'lost' natural beauty we once enjoyed.
These memories stayed with this person & continued to have meaning for them.
And, these particular thoughts serve as a connection to the writer's sense of wonder.
Nature is where they find peace & tranquility. Where they feel safe & comfortable.
5. Dryads are Greek nature spirits who are usually bound to a forest or who focus on an oak tree.
6. Hmm... Howard's just north of the city of Providence. So, he's saying that it's also rife with "decadent" slights...
7. HPL's idea of 'ancestral' is limited to the British invasion of what are actually American Indian lands...
8. 'Gold paved streets' comes from the 1800s tale of "Dick Whittington & His Cat."
In that story, this saying describes London's roads. And, means that "it's easy to make money there..."
9. Nymphs are minor Greek nature spirits usually associated with fertility, growing things or water.
Long lived but, not immortal!! So, they were playmates of the Greek Gods.
Usually kind & helpful to men...
There's some 20 types of nymphs.
10. A Satyr is a Greek nature spirit with ears & tail that look like those of a horse.
Walks around with a permanent & exaggerated erection!!
The same as the Roman fauns.
11. Naiads are water spirits living in rivers, springs or waterfalls.
But, not in the oceans... That's the Oceanids' job.
Only Nereids can move in both sea- water & freshwater!
12. Pan is the Greek God of the Wild, rustic music, fertility, hunters, flocks & shepherds.
Has the back quarters, legs & horns of a goat - like a satyr!
His unseen, but 'felt', presence would arouse panic in travelers.
Boon 'companion' to nymphs...
13. Around Providence, it should be the Wampanoag American Indian nation.
14. American Indians were called tribes by the invading Europeans. But, they were actually nations & should be regarded as such today.
15. Wampanoags were a group of 30 Algonquian speaking nations. This Confederacy spread from R.I. north thru Massachusetts & south into parts of Connecticut.
They have all lived in this area since around 12,000 BC & were led by a Massasoit ("Great Chief") from 1581 til 1661.
It was members of the Pokanoket nation that helped the Pilgrims back in 1621.
Europeans had been visiting this New England since the late 1500s. And, had begun reducing the Wampanoag population via introduced diseases!
English colonists pushed them further inland, resulting in war. The losing abo nations were dispersed into slavery or reservations.
Only the Mashpee & Aquinnah nations were recently recognized by the U.S. government.
Wars of conquest were unknown to them. As they didn't believe in land ownership.
So, only quick raids were undertaken.
"Powwows" were actually shamans. Pniese were their own male "knights" & female "counselors."
Drums were seen as "living entities", guardian spirits & a reference to a past way of life.
Female singers used water drums as portable accompaniment for their sacred music & dances.
Drums help Wampanoags to "live by the rhythms of Mother Earth" & also reinforces their "relationship to the spiritual forces ruling the universe."
War dances involved beating the ground with sticks & screaming out piercing war cries.
The warriors requested the help of spirits & painted their bodies black, red, green or white.
They drank a tea made from juniper berries - to help the blood clot, in case of being cut...
To Be Continued.

shade
The half-empty shampoo bottle slips from her shaking grasp. Lands with a cracking thud on the cool tile, plastic shell separating in a jagged line. A trail of blueish fluid spins out in a hypnotizing spiral as momentum sends it skittering across the ground. Slides right under the rungs of the bunk bed, all the way back against the wall where it’s unreachable.
Mess. Mess, mess, mess. Just a big fucking mess. Just another fucking mess.
One more thing she has to do, one more thing she needs to handle, to clean up. Another task between her and freedom — which is so, so close she could actually taste it. Bittersweet on her heavy tongue, rich like butterscotch candies and honeysuckle-nostalgia. Enough sugar to decay.
And it does. Rots into memories of better things, good things, sweet other freedoms: sitting in the shade under a willow in North Carolina on her grandparent’s farm. Sitting in the shade with her college friends outside the student union at Penn, drinking overpriced taro milk tea and laughing about some celebrity gossip. Sitting in the shade of autumn with her mom and Isaac, knees knocking together as they rock the porch swing and watch the dogs yap at each others’ ankles through the crunch of leaves.
Shade has always meant safety. Somewhere to escape the heat of the sun, find a moment to cool off, rest and recuperate. She’s never before felt danger in the shadows; has always leapt across the wavering boundary of sunlight with no expectations but a temperate embrace of relief. Shade's shelter.
She doesn’t feel sheltered or embraced now. She fears.
The last twelve hours have made her realize this: she has never experienced real, true fear. It is much different than the race of her heart after a movie jumpscare and scream queen shriek; a snake on the hiking trail; the bubble of excitement in the arm-raise drop on a Coney Island coaster.
Fear is the thing watching over her shoulder. Fear is men with guns that know how to use them, who use fists and knives otherwise. Fear is the gentle threat of her mother’s address being recited with chilling accuracy.
Matilda drops to the ground, ignoring the jab of pain in her knees. She could fall into that sting, do something with it, burst into action.
She doesn't. Instead she soaks in the embrace of self-pity, cool like shade. Tears prick at her eyes — that’s good. It feels welcoming to turn from the sun, to hide, to weep. So she allows them to spill over and fall freely.
Her mind zooms out: imagines herself as a morose, baroque painting. Maybe framed in grainy 8mm, a gorgeous sexplotiation-era nun with running mascara. Wonders if she looks pitiful-pretty, slumped in a heap and crying, crying, crying.
She thinks about needing to wear long pants later; her shins will purple within the hour, skin blossoming with a nasty, deep bruise that’ll stick around much longer than it should. Take your iron pills, Matilda, and the voice sounds like her mother.
Oh, her mom. She wants a hug, wants someone to ice her sore legs, to rub her back and let her cry and tell her it'll fade into a distant memory. Because this whole fucking experience? It's just been a nasty, deep bruise.
All civilian contracts extended until further notice. Comply with orders and continue job operations as previously outlined. Indicate agreement and return to supervisory agent by below date.
It hadn’t been her signature on the bottom of the page. Someone had forged it. Forged it with care, too. Had her little twirling coil around the T and everything. That T makes her nauseous to think about.
God, does she feel stupid. Matilda can count the number of times she’s felt stupid on one hand.
It was just supposed to be a temp job.

Il est dit à la note XLVI qu'un stranger is someone who knows little of plumbing.
