My friend as the same reading comprehension as tumblr and I-
Basically I texted the group chat about a fake story is my psych class. This story was an introduction to implicit bias and victim-blaming.
Long story short, only me and four other people said that the murderer was at fault for the victims death. Everyone else said the victim. (This is the first text I sent to the group chat.)
Short story long, the victim's husband had to take a ferry to work and would only be back long enough to see her for a few minutes every day before she had to work. She hated this arrangement and instead of talking with her husband like you should in any healthy relationship she decided to go around the same part of the city he worked in (the part you needed to take a ferry to) and having affairs before rushing home before he got back. When the affairs felt a little too real, she would break them off very roughly, leaving her lovers (unknowing to being the side piece) really hurt and upset. One day, she broke it off roughly with one of them but realized that she had left her wallet at their place. She needed her money to pay for her ticket home before her husband got back. They refused to let her in their home no matter what she said, so she tried to get a free rise on the ferry since she rode every night and promised to pay the next day. The ferryman said he couldn't do that, so in her desperation to get home before her husband, she decided to take the dangerous path around the river. A path that was full of highway men. She was confronted by one of said highway men for her money when she said she had none they tussled, and he ended up stabbing and killing her. (This is what I texted after my friend responded.)
So the reason I say my friend has the same reading comprehension as tumblr?
He read the first post and assumed it was the husband that killed her. He was a fascinating look into implicit bias. (something that has always piqued my interest ever since I found out what it was my sophomore year of high school)
And it also gave me the most horrendous flashbacks to the TERF feminist tumblr posts that littered Pinterest and my pins because I was a very impressionable 11 year old before I got tumblr and found out what I actually believed. Like it went straight from the victim-blaming of most of my class to blaming an innocent bystander who had no idea what was even going on (and probably never will) simply because of an implicit bias.
Holy shit we are fascinating.

(ln8 spoilers) jinshi thinking except for my godly looks i am just average and then his smartass goes and kills around five birds with just one brand. someone whose status is so high that even his name can't be said by anyone except the emperor jinshi branded himself with the crest of the empress vowing loyalty to her assuring her he doesn't wants to take the place of her son. one-upping his "bro" with this who refuses to let him leave the line of succession wouldn't let him become a commoner doesn't wants to let him become a servant to the royal family. only slaves get branded and if this ever got out there will be chaos in the court. gyokuyou tho considers jinshi like a brother and he did swear loyalty to her but if she ever tried to cross his family her clan's brand on his body would be enough to prove her as an adultress which would be bad for her and her clan.
and jinshi did this in front of these two people and maomao so now she is the only one who can see him naked and the emperor cannot order him to marry anyone which was something that was definitely gonna happen had he not done what he did. as a bonus he gets to spend more time with maomao after a long time and he did all this while saying the exact words: empress gyokuyou, your enemy i shall never be in front of maomao reassuring her because she once muttered i don't want to be an enemy to empress gyokuyou and he had heard her but before he could tell her that he had no intention of doing that either he couldn't because of the lishu incident. one of the major reasons maomao hadn't accepted her own feelings for jinshi one of the obstacles he promised to remove for her. even though he doesn't even know that maomao's concerns about her becoming gyokuyou's enemy had to do with his birth secret his true status. that no matter what he is the rightful successor. something jinshi himself isn't even aware of and yet without knowing that he did this to deal with it all in a single way most preferable to him: masochism

The Story of Madame X
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
John Singer Sargent (American, 1856–1925) • Madame X (Virginie Amélie Avegno Gautreau) • 1883-84 • Metropolitan Museum of Art
Photograph of Sargent with what is perhaps his most famous portrait – that of the very wealthy socialite, Madame Gautreau. This is not the original version, though; the one that shocked the art world in 1884 when it was shown at the Paris Salon.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Above is a sketch for the Gautreau portrait. At some point Sargent decided to paint the right strap of her dress seductively off her shoulder. When the portrait was shown in Paris, there was an uproar of disapproval. Madame Gautreau was, apparently, already rumored to be an adultress. Her Singer portrait only added emphasis to the public's criticism of her character. According to the gallery card at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (the painting was on loan from the MET), Gautreau very much liked the painting. What neither she nor Sargent predicted was that it would cause such a stir and be the cause of much conversation, mostly derisive, in the drawing rooms of Paris high society.
Sargent was so upset by the reaction at the Salon and the ensuing buzz that he took the painting back to his studio and repainted the strap in its proper place on the shoulder.
The painting was eventually sold on the condition that its subject not be revealed in the title. It was to be called Madame X.

Wonwoo x Reader: Night and Day
Tumblr media
Summary: Where you find the quiet waiter working in your father's in really cute, however he's not so quiet and shy all the time.
A/n: First Seventeen fic!!! Btw Wonwoo is kind of a cultivator (from chinese ancient dramas) but idk if everyone will get the reference so I used the word "demon hunter" not "slayer" cause that a whole different concept. This was a request from my friend, and I hope I could do justice to him and the idea :)
W/c: 2.6k
_____________________________________
You were sitting on your father's inn's roof to watch people, it's your normal routine on quiet days. If this was around meal time the restaurant area would be filled with borders and visitors and you'd have to go down to help your mother in the kitchen. You looked down as the quiet guy that works for your father as a waiter and shook your head when you found him getting bullied by one of the regulars, again. You walked to the stairs and got down, and greeted the customer, eyeing the new woman he brought in today. "Sanghyeon ssi, I hope your wife is doing well" you said, cocking your head and looking him in the eye and he shut up. His wife was one of the main vegetable suppliers of the inn. What a shame his wife was probably working hard in their fields while here he is roaming with Adultresses and bullying poor waiters. You thought to yourself "May I know what's wrong" you then asked and he simply shook his head. You looked to the side to find Wonwoo standing there small and quiet, with his head down. His white robes tied and tucked nicely under his grayish blue half robe. His white sleeves are rolled up to his elbows, round glasses sat on his nose bridge that compliments his face.
"Let's go" you told him "Please enjoy your meal," you said with a light bow and walked off. "Don't let them bully you like that. Speak up" you told him and he simply nodded and almost ran off. You didn't notice but his ears were already red with his interaction with you.
He snuck a glass at you from behind the kitchen blinds and you sat down on one of the empty tables to read a book. He watched the way your eyes shone as you read with a hint of a smile adorned on your lips. He noticed the way you pulled your hair behind your ear as your new haircut always covers your eyes, hair coming in the way while you're reading.
"Wonwoo~" he heard a name call from inside the kitchen and he rushed to work.
You were reading a romantic book to find some inspiration. However, the protagonist kept reminding you of someone, someone you love to watch. His intent gaze, wordless nods and silent eyes, sometimes he sits and stares up at the sky and you wish you could know what he was thinking of. You blushed when you realised all this you have been thinking. You walked back to your spot in the roof and started writing:
In a world of vibrant voices echoing afar,
There lived a quiet boy, like a distant star.
His soft-spoken nature, an enigmatic grace,
Embracing silence, with a gentle embrace.
He wandered through life, a thoughtful observer,
Immersed in solitude, an inward explorer.
His mind a sanctuary, where dreams would unfold,
And secrets whispered, like stories untold.
You smiled when you were done, and you suddenly heard some commotion from downstairs. Now, this was unlikely because it was over dinner time, by now the inn should have been closed and your mother, father and you were supposed to be off on your way home as it's your brother's turn to stay the night. You got down to find a noble man and his wife and attendants checking into the inn.
"Y/n go home, we'll have to stay and attend them, they're paying great" your mother whispered, you didn't want to stay back so you set off for home. Your home is a cottage just on the extended end of the market. You love it as it's surrounded by nature away from the hussle of the town. But today the walk was rather eerie and extremely quiet, as if the general sounds of the forest were also silent. Suddenly, you heard rustling, you looked around to not find anything. Again, the sound was heard and it's from the trees and bushes just in front of you to the left. Only if you could go a bit more you'd reach home, but now you're alone in the middle of nowhere and helpless, the only minus point of your house decides to come into play the exact night you were walking home alone. A lot of missing people and dead people have been reported on the other part of town since the last two weeks, you remembered and shuddered, you don't really want to end up on those missing posters.
You heard the sound of footsteps and strain your eyes to look through the darkness to see a figure standing, still as dead, it was as if surrounded with darkness, the eyes (or at least where they supposed to be) show red. Everything in you screamed RUN but you couldn't, your feet felt heavy and tears stung your eyes. Is this how you die?
"Get back!" You heard a sound of a heavy voice and a man in black hanbok literally jumped in front that thing and you, his back faced towards you. He ran at that thing and engaged with it attacking it, a sword in hand. What is going on?, you thought as you tried to step back, when your feet could finally move. The man was finally able to piece his sword through that thing(after receiving lots of blows and scratches) and it started to shudder and burn from within. What is happening?!
The man then suddenly turned and the face shocked you, Wonwoo? He came extremely close within the blink of an eye and you heard his voice clearly as he said "don't roam alone in the night, it's unsafe" right into your ears as you were too stunned to speak. You felt a pressure on your neck and suddenly saw darkness.
The next thing you know is opening your eyes in your bed as your brother called your name repetitively. "What is it Mingyu?" You asked, "Were you drinking last night?" He asked trying to sniff bard into the air, "why are you in your good robes, sleeping in the living room?" He asked with an amused expression. "I was feeling tired, so I thought to…. Rest a bit here, but I fell asleep. How was the night?" You asked trying to change the subject. "It was so tiring! That man is so demanding and he's gonna stay for three more nights. Mom has already gotten fresh and gone. You go and help them and let me catch some sleep" he said and you rushed to get freshen up and go to the inn. As you entered the inn you saw Wonwoo and Jeonghan serving. Suddenly, last night's occurrences flashed in front of your eyes and you were stunned. Was that all true or a dream? You don't even remember reaching home? What was that thing? What is Wonwoo? Before you could think any further your mother called you inside to help. You and your brother worked as your parents rested to work through the night as the Noble man might just want a baked duck in the middle of the night.
Thus, here you were walking home with your friend Seungkwan telling him all about the previous night and how Wonwoo has been very smartly avoiding you the whole day and Seungkwan asked "Are you sure you were awake? You didn't chug a peg or two or six?". "No!" You refused "I know what and whom I saw" you said "besides you saw the way he was walking slowly and those scratches on his arm he was trying so hard to cover, they all match I saw him fight" you added. "You're parents and brother won't be home right?" He asked and you nodded. "Then let's go investigate" he said and pulled you towards a different road. "You know where he lives?" You asked as you whisper-yelled."Girl, I know everything" he said "and by your description it was a demon, if what you said is true then it means Jeon Wonwoo is a Demon hunter. Why would he hide it?" He said and suddenly you pressed a hand on his mouth, a figure stepped out of the house. It was actually nobody other than the person in question. In a black hanbok, his wide shoulders were evident. The intricate golden thread design all expanded and his back held his sword. You looked at Seungkwan who's eyes were wide in shock, he removed your hand from his mouth and lipped 'you were right?!' and you shrugged. Before either of you realised Wonwoo had disappeared. "Where did he go?" You both stood up and looked around "He's a hunter, of course he disappeared" Seungkwan said and suddenly you heard a thud and before you could turn you felt a metal on your neck "Gotcha" he whispered near your ear sending chills down his spine and then there was darkness.
When you felt water sprinkled on your face you jolte up! "You!” you told him "you keep knocking me out!" You complained, then looked around to find yourself on the river bank. Wonwoo calmly sitting beside you at a feet distance. "What?" You asked, as you found him looking at you wordlessly. "Some bravery you have to be in the middle of nowhere at night again alone. That too with that sword bearing good for nothing lover of yours" he scoffed. "First Seungkwan isn't my lover he is my friend and second don't say it like that" you frowned. "I didn't mean to offend you. And I didn't know, I just heard the villagers-" he stopped. "Yeah, me and Seungkwan grew up together, his house was the closest one to mine and the only one on this path, the village children used to call us weirdos and never played with us, so it was pretty much me, him and my brother. And he's not into swords, it's just a family thing for him" you said "Wait. Where is he?! Is he safe!" You suddenly remembered and panicked. "Don't worry he's inside my protected circle of talismans nothing can cross it" he assured you, something within you trusted him. You noticed his features more clearly now that the specs are gone. His handsomely sculpted face and the gravity in his eyes. "Why do you hide?" You asked him finally, "I don't hide, I just try to blend in well so I don't stand out. I don't want to gain attention" he said shrugging and you nodded.
_____________________________________
You watched as Wonwoo walked around serving, the way his demeanor is so different from what you saw the previous night. He passes by you in the same manner he always does in a shy way, you can't help but think how he is both the shy boy with glasses, but also an intimidating man with a sword.
In the realm of passion, behold a boy,
With stormy hues in his wistful eyes,
Where lightning sparks, an infernal joy,
A tempest within, no disguise.
In those depths, an untamed tempest brews,
A wild force, relentless, undeterred,
The raging winds dance, their primal cues,
Unleashing power with each whispered word
You wrote, you couldn't help but feel warmer now that you know him more than the others, you've seen him more. You met him by the river two days later, you talked about the sun and the moon, the Ajjhumma's tasty mandu that you get in the town's square, your favorite poems by Lan An. You told him about your childhood and he told you how he was, and how he ran away from home 3 years ago and never returned. He had walked you home that night, you had a smile on your face the whole time the next day. He was still shy in front of people, he told you he feels nervous in front of people, but you bring in a sense of comfort in him.
_____________________________________
1 month later
You often met Wonwoo at night by the river, Mingyu had once asked you where you were going one night and you made up an excuse and bribed him to keep his mouth shut. Since the past week there have been many missing cases so Wonwoo had told you not to leave your house at night, there was a demon on loose in the woods. However today Wonwoo himself didn't turn up to work, it was around midday and he still hadn't come to the inn and your worst thoughts were taking control. Seungkwan tried to calm you but it didn't work, you finally told your parents that you weren't feeling well and left. You speedily walked towards his house with Seungkwan following close behind, and found his door unlocked, tears stung your eyes as you rushed inside, you found Wonwoo lying motionless inside and you ran to him. He was breathing, it was light but his pulse was there. You quickly tried to pick him and made him lie on his bed, you checked and he was running fever, he had several scratches on his arm.
"Kwannie! Do something" you said in panic. "I'll get a doctor," he said but you stopped him. "You said you knew everything and I know you know about medicines. We can't let anybody know about him, he didn't want that" you said and tears flowed down he was in pain, it was evident on his face. "Wait wait, take off his robes, I know a few herbs that could help him," Seungkwan said. You couldn't think you followed his instructions. You whispered an apology and undid his robes and found more bruises, and then noticed one wound on his stomach that was turning blueish, demon poison, you had heard from Seungkwan that some demons had poisons. Seungkwan quickly came back and prepared the medicine, and you pulled the unconscious man up and applied the concoction. You applied cold wet cloth on his forehead and Seungkwan kept a check on his pulse, by sunset it was steady, Seungkwan promised to sneak you out of the house in the morning and sent you home. "He is sleeping, I'll keep a constant eye in him, trust me, go home before your mother arrives and we're both in trouble, I'll make some excuse at home tomorrow" he assured and you reluctantly went back.
You couldn't sleep even for a moment, your mind was clouded with thoughts, the wounds, bruises, his face when he was in pain. Your heart had stopped for a moment when you first found him lying on the ground, your heart still aches and something told you it will stay that way until you see him awake.
Its been 2 days, since you and Seungkwan took turns and looked after Wonwoo. You felt your heart empty when you looked at him, you sat at a corner of his cottage and leaned your head on the wall. You didn't realise how tired you were and fell asleep. You woke to the sound of shuffling and opened your eyes to scream. It was the man Jeon Wonwoo himself back from almost his death. He slowly brought his hands and brushed off your bangs out of the way from your eyes. "I don't like this haircut, your eyes are always hidden, I can't look at them from far" he said and tears welled up in your eyes. You stood up and hugged him as you sobbed into his chest as he caressed your hair. "Don't scare me like that" you scolded him as he apologized to you. That was when it clicked what situation you were in and you jumped back away from him. For so long he was unconscious and you never noticed his actual wide shoulders, that seemed so strong. His strong muscular arms and the many old scares that told stories of his bravery. Jeon Wonwoo was a beautiful man, you concluded.
"Hey Y/- AAAAHHH OH MY GOD!" you heard Seungkwan curse and screech as the two of you broke into laughter.

An Update from Anti-Gender Dad
Tumblr fame has really gone to his head. He has taken up gender studies - not the formal academic discipline, which he has no knowledge of, but his own personal study of The Genders, in his ongoing mission to make it so that knowing someone’s gender is as personal and unnecessary as knowing their shoe size. Without further ado, an email I received from him today:
Hi daughter,
I have been diving deeply, the last several days, into the subject of gender identifiers in the English language, with an eye towards whether particular identifiers could be or even should be eliminated. It's not just the pronouns, after all. I ended up studying a comprehensive list of  nouns in the English language which end in -ess (but only as a gender identifier, eliminating all the -ness words, and the oddballs like access). I came up with what I think are some interesting observations.
There are, of course, no more actresses. Everyone is now an actor. Heiresses are gradually losing favor in the probate law business. Adultresses, on the other hand, are still quite popular, especially among Red Letter A manufacturing concerns.
There are and always have been seamstresses, but I have never encountered a seamster. I have known many a teamster, and yet never a teamstress. A governess and a governor are two entirely different things.
I suspect there will always be the princess and the duchess, given the male-preferring royal primogeniture setup from whence they arise. Sorry, your ladyship, not everyone can be a duke or a baron. Though I have no problem eliminating the whole lot (yet another chapter in my quest to make the world a better place by taking it over and then handing off absolute rule to my daughter).
The hostess could easily become the host and the sorceress the sorcerer with no problem, but get this: the mistress would suddenly become...the master! Ooooh!
More to follow. Feel free to unsubscribe.

can't believe people are getting mad over sam not immediately leaving the grandma and choosing mon, and mon letting herself be kept in secret knowing sam in getting married still.
i guess that's what happens when tropes like this are usually so romanticized but i feel like gap the series is very grounded towards human decisions.
need everyone to realize sam has been with grandma since she was a child. when she lost her family, she had grandma. hell that ep 11 showed how fcking crazy the grandma is in guilt tripping and gaslighting. i did not expect someone in sam's situation to just drop her only known family so easily esp if she's been honed into thinking she had no other emotions to feel but gratefulness.
and with mon's decision to be an 'adultress'... she just learned about sam's fcked up history. if you loved someone so much, your first thought wouldn't be to run and be mad that she's eloped in a situation she can't easily escape. mon is a family person. she understood that the wedding was for her family. mon tried to stay because sam needed her.
that moment in the couch, it was obvious they were living in hope and desperation. sam desperately needed mon, mon desperately wanted to be there for sam so they made decisions then based off of that emotion.
obviously reality crept into them eventually. which is why mon needed out and sam finally took a stand.
gap has always been shown as a mature story. i don't get why people still haven't understood that characters will make stupid decisions sometimes and let them be. i know the start was all fluffy and some expected it to stay that way but they're all flawed characters in that show. they ain't always gonna choose the right thing immediately.

Character Study: Tommy Hagan as Iago from Othello
Tumblr media Tumblr media
To begin with, there’s just not enough analysis of Tommy, which is probably mostly due to his complete disappearance in S2. We (fic writers) use him a lot as a plot device for Steve’s King persona or the beginning of his bi-awakening, but Tommy’s presence in the show alone is arguably more sinister than most people give him credit for. He’s still a plot device for Steve, but the same way that Iago is a plot device for Othello.
For those who hear “Iago” and think of the bird in Aladdin, that’s totally valid because the Shakespeare character is 100% the influence for that bird, so if that connection helps the rest of this make sense, hang on to it.
Iago (the character and the bird) gets by on feeding Othello information. His job at the beginning of the play is the banner holder, he follows Othello around with his flag. He wanted second in command, but that job went to Cassio instead. This is kind of where Iago’s character development begins: he was snubbed for second in command, and decides quickly that he needs to do away with Cassio, feeding Othello lies until he believes Iago is a better choice.
In the same vein, Tommy has inserted himself as Steve’s right-hand man. That’s what we see from the literal beginning, Tommy following along with Steve as this second-in-command type of person. We don’t really know if there was a Cassio-esque change over with Steve since he just kind of “pops up out of the pool fully formed” (thank you @peter-pantomime for that), but Iago traveled to Venice with Othello to begin with, was always kind of there regardless, so it’s safe to say that Tommy was too. However, like with Iago, Tommy seems to be the real thoughts behind the operation while Steve is the voice that everyone hears. Tommy is, for all intents and purposes, the bird on Steve’s shoulder. Tommy is the puppet master that gives Steve just enough leeway to think he’s the one calling the shots. This is seen in particular with the spray paint incident, since it’s Tommy who’s literally shown with the spray paint can in his hand in the alley, and can be assumed to be the one who tagged the marquee, but Steve is the one who (however unintentionally) takes responsibility for it by doubling down on the accusation.
On that note, the other person Iago goes after is Desdemona, Othello’s wife. Immediately after Othello and Des are married, Iago is the one who tells her father, painting it as this desecration of his pure (white) daughter by this dark (black) [for lack of a better word] creature. It’s Iago’s idea to frame Desdemona as an adultress that ultimately ends in her death.
If we look at those ideas with Tommy, from the get go he (and Carol) are rude and distancing of Nancy, and while Steve is walking this tightrope of wanting to be seen as the top dog while also being whatever Nancy needs him to be, Tommy (and Carol) are causing problems on purpose. Don’t get me wrong, Jonathan and the secret camera incident don’t help, but ultimately it’s Tommy who whispers the thoughts into Steve’s brain about Nancy being a cheater (she was, at least emotionally, but that’s neither here nor there for this comparison) that ultimately leads to the first big breakup. The “death” of Desdemona plays out in the S1 breakup of Steve and Nancy, especially since their reconciliation is never solidified given Nancy’s withdrawal quickly after.
But what the heck is the motive for any of it?
We (Shakespeare people) know Iago has this weird desire for power without seeming to want anything to do with actually wielding it at the forefront. He seems perfectly content to have power over others in the most conniving of ways, but never an “I want to be king” sort of way. Tommy has that same energy, following Steve until it stops being convenient and then moving on to Billy when he “usurps the throne.”
But it’s this weird, intentional isolating of Steve for Tommy’s benefit that mirrors Iago’s intentions with Othello so well. This whole “if I can’t have him, nobody can” sort of attitude that leads both Iago and Tommy to push back against anyone who gets too close to their focus of attention. It’s a jealousy aspect, not in the sense that Tommy/Iago want to be Steve/Othello, but that they’re the only one allowed to be in that position of proximity to them. Tommy/Iago’s entire thing is shifting attention away from themselves while maintaining all of the power. Iago does it with Cassio, using him as the scapegoat in his plan against Desdemona, two birds with one stone. Tommy does it with Jonathan, using him to convince Steve that Nancy really is the slut he accuses her of being. Basically, the moment Steve sees (or thinks he sees) Jonathan with Nancy in her bedroom and misreads the situation just enough to convince him of her cheating is the equivalent to the handkerchief in Othello.
It also sort of begs the question of whether Iago or Tommy have done this in the past. Is Nancy the first girl Tommy’s actively caused an issue with, or does he do this regularly? Is it because Nancy is the first person Tommy doesn’t feel like he can manipulate, thereby labeling her a threat to his power the same way Iago does with Desdemona?
There’s a surface-level (heterosexual) reading of Othello that makes it seem like Iago wants Desdemona for himself, which sure, the fact he’s already married to Emilia while contriving this entire scheme intended to break up Othello and Desdemona can be read as a parallel to Tommy’s relationship with Carol and focus on ending Steve and Nancy’s relationship. But going back to the “If I can’t have him, nobody can” idea, it’s more likely that Tommy and Iago are dealing with this unrequited love situation with their respective male subjects that results in not only a desire for power but this obsessive need to isolate them so that the only person they feel they can rely on is already perched on their shoulder at all times.
Spoiler alert, though, Iago dies, and while Tommy just kind of disappears into the ether, that final scene where Steve finally stands up for himself and cuts ties with Tommy is not entirely unlike Othello finally realizing who Iago really is and killing him himself. The death of the friendship reads like the death of the partnership in both cases. Tommy only just makes it one step further than Iago by attaching himself to the next person in line which is Billy, but there’s no telling if Tommy wouldn’t have done the same manipulative technique with him given the chance. It's also an interesting character development parallel for Steve since him standing up to Tommy can be viewed as the "death" of his King Steve persona more than Billy's introduction can, and Othello's last stand before his death is to make sure Iago goes down as well.
Obviously none of this is good, but Tommy doesn’t really get the credit he deserves for being, for all intents and purposes, a poster child for the Shakespearean villain. All of his sinisterness exists in the background, but it’s definitely there.

Jessica Rabbit's Colour-Changing Dress
When we first see Jessica Rabbit at the Ink and Paint Club in Who Framed Roger Rabbit, her dress is pink and sparkly. But for the rest of the film, it's red and doesn't sparkle.
Now, I know the meta reason for this. The filmmakers wanted the dress to sparkle throughout the film, but that would have been too expensive to animate, so instead they only let it happen when Jessica was under stage lighting.
But I think there's some accidental symbolism here.
Tumblr media
You see, Jessica's introduction is a performance. It's an idealised image she's projecting for the sake of her (largely male) audience. She's impressing them with her voice and her body. She's dazzling them.
But then Eddie catches her playing patty-cake with a man who isn't her husband.
The next time Jessica gets a speaking role, it's in Acme's warehouse. And what's happened to her dress?
It's turned red and lost its sparkle.
Tumblr media
And I think the colour red is significant. It reminds me of the term "scarlet woman", which used to refer to women who were notorious for having many casual sexual encounters.
It also reminds me of The Scarlet Letter. The titular letter was a capital A placed on a woman who had committed adultery. Now, the phrase "scarlet letter" can refer to any symbol of something you've done wrong and regretted.
Jessica has (apparently) been revealed as an adultress. She's become a scarlet woman, branded with a scarlet letter.
The loss of sparkle in her dress also represents her downfall in other's eyes. She used to shine for them. She used to be a spectacle to behold. But she's lost her lustre. She's been exposed as immoral and untrustworthy.
Tumblr media
...Or has she?
All is not lost for Jessica. Because do you know which other important character in this film also wears red?
Tumblr media
Roger Rabbit.
Jessica's husband.
He never believed she was capable of cheating on him. He assumed that someone had made her do it, that she was an innocent victim of circumstance. And he was right! He wasn't, as some believed, so blinded by love that he couldn't see her dark side. Nor was he perfectly aware of her moral failings and living in denial. No, he knew his wife better than anyone, and he knew she was a good woman.
And the fact that their clothes are the same colour by the end of the film feels significant - to me, anyway.
The act of adultery that was meant to destroy Jessica's reputation has actually brought her closer to her husband.
The so-called "betrayal" that was meant to tear them apart has actually made their love stronger.

now, why you were in a room with the person you hated the most was a question for a later date. the simple answer? austin butler was your discourteous, spiteful, conceited co-star who believed everything just fell into his lap because of his charm and good looks. realistically, it did. he grew up being told he would be a heartbreaker one day, and in a way, he was. he played everyone’s crush on disney and nickelodeon television shows (including yours, but you wouldn’t admit it) and when you became an actress, of course, your first breakout role would be with him.
for some godforsaken reason, baz luhrmann believed there was an ounce of chemistry between you two during a table read, and announced you as priscilla presley and austin as elvis presley. you two did well at first, keeping a professional manner at all times. that is, until you heard him call you a slut behind closed doors to one of the production assistants.
you weren’t sure what prompted him to believe you were a raunchy adultress, but you took that with you everytime the cameras began to roll. he must have caught on to your bitterness, and decided to never speak to you outside of the confines of the set. that arrangement worked well: for just about three months. apparently, it was hard to feign chemistry with someone when you wanted to rip each other’s throats out.
and, that was how you ended up with your original question: you two were currently sat in an office, baz running over the lines for the romantic kiss scene you had been dreading to film. austin tried to maintain a smile on his face, but you looked downright miserable, and baz was doing everything he could to ignore it.
just when you thought it couldn’t get worse, baz suggested, “why don’t we do a test run of the kiss? just to, ya know, see it in action?”
you blinked twice, watching as austin smirked out of the corner of your eye. it took all your might to not reach over and slam his head into the nearby office desk. you nodded, leaning forward in your chair, “look, baz, could i have a moment alone with austin here? just need to run over something quickly.”
baz’s expression switched to utter confusion as you kindly smiled, hoping he wouldn’t see the red that flashed behind your eyes. austin shifted uncomfortably beside you as your director agreed to leave the room, leaving you and austin alone. the sound of the clock ticking rang in your ears like a siren, silence washing over the walls as you two sat there.
“you know, i like this less than you do,” you started.
he scoffed, “not possible.”
“listen, we can either get it over with, or we can redo it fifty million times until we’re blue in the face.”
“yeah, i bet you’d like that,” he snorted, avoiding eye contact as well as he possibly could, despite being a measly 5 inches away from you.
“what is that supposed to mean?” your tone rose an octave as your blood burnt through your skin.
“it means, that i bet you’re so fucking eager to make out with anyone,” he finally turned to look at you, his eyes meeting yours in rage.
“what is wrong with you — you have been on my back since i got here! why don’t you just tell me what your fucking problem is before i tell everyone about how you cry yourself to sleep because you’re homesick?”
that seemed to push about just every button for him. his body leaned towards you, exhaling heavily through his nostrils. “what did you just —“
“you’re a fucking narcissist, that’s what it is. you just want alllll the power so you can be the star —“
“you better watch your fucking mouth,” he sneered at you, his breath waning over your face as he migrated even closer to your burning body.
“bet you wish i did—“ you pressed on, your nose mere inches away from his. you didn’t want to look at him for a second longer, but the pull of his energy was enough to keep you reeled in. you couldn’t move. your whole body fell limp as his eyes traveled from your eyes down to your lips. you fought to think of things you could say that would further piss him off, knowing that there might be one thing that could set him off over the edge. “—daddy.”
before you had a chance to say another snide remark, his lips crashed onto yours, a collision of teeth and tongues. your brain couldn’t even form a coherent thought as his teeth grazed across your bottom lip, your hand reaching out to entangle itself within his hair. you were on fire, your body defying what your brain was telling you. the need for air was the only reason you two pulled away from each other, and you moved away as far as you possibly could from him. he wiped his lips on the back of his hand, looking at you with little regard, “yeah, i think we’ve got the kiss down pat.”
and with that, he left the room, leaving you and your drenched panties behind.

Warnings Against Foolishness
1 My son, if thou be surety for thy friend, if thou hast stricken thy hand with a stranger,
2 Thou art snared with the words of thy mouth, thou art taken with the words of thy mouth.
3 Do this now, my son, and deliver thyself, when thou art come into the hand of thy friend; go, humble thyself, and make sure thy friend.
4 Give not sleep to thine eyes, nor slumber to thine eyelids.
5 Deliver thyself as a roe from the hand of the hunter, and as a bird from the hand of the fowler.
6 Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise:
7 Which having no guide, overseer, or ruler,
8 Provideth her meat in the summer, and gathereth her food in the harvest.
9 How long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard? when wilt thou arise out of thy sleep?
10 Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep:
11 So shall thy poverty come as one that travelleth, and thy want as an armed man.
12 A naughty person, a wicked man, walketh with a froward mouth.
13 He winketh with his eyes, he speaketh with his feet, he teacheth with his fingers;
14 Frowardness is in his heart, he deviseth mischief continually; he soweth discord.
15 Therefore shall his calamity come suddenly; suddenly shall he be broken without remedy.
16 These six things doth the Lord hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him:
17 A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,
18 An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief,
19 A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.
20 My son, keep thy father's commandment, and forsake not the law of thy mother:
21 Bind them continually upon thine heart, and tie them about thy neck.
22 When thou goest, it shall lead thee; when thou sleepest, it shall keep thee; and when thou awakest, it shall talk with thee.
23 For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life:
24 To keep thee from the evil woman, from the flattery of the tongue of a strange woman.
25 Lust not after her beauty in thine heart; neither let her take thee with her eyelids.
26 For by means of a whorish woman a man is brought to a piece of bread: and the adultress will hunt for the precious life.
27 Can a man take fire in his bosom, and his clothes not be burned?
28 Can one go upon hot coals, and his feet not be burned?
29 So he that goeth in to his neighbour's wife; whosoever toucheth her shall not be innocent.
30 Men do not despise a thief, if he steal to satisfy his soul when he is hungry;
31 But if he be found, he shall restore sevenfold; he shall give all the substance of his house.
32 But whoso committeth adultery with a woman lacketh understanding: he that doeth it destroyeth his own soul.
33 A wound and dishonour shall he get; and his reproach shall not be wiped away.
34 For jealousy is the rage of a man: therefore he will not spare in the day of vengeance.
35 He will not regard any ransom; neither will he rest content, though thou givest many gifts. — Proverbs 6 | King James Version (KJV) The King James Version Bible is in the public domain Cross References: Genesis 4:15; Genesis 6:5; Genesis 39:8; Genesis 39:19; Exodus 20:17; Deuteronomy 6:8; Deuteronomy 7:25; Deuteronomy 19:10; 2 Chronicles 36:16; Job 15:12; Job 38:39; Psalm 27:12; Psalm 91:3; Psalm 140:2; Psalm 132:4; Proverbs 2:11-12; Proverbs 5:9-10; Proverbs 7:1; Proverbs 7:7; Proverbs 10:5; Proverbs 10:26; Proverbs 11:15; Proverbs 10:15; Proverbs 19:15; Proverbs 23:21; Proverbs 30:27; Song of Solomon 8:7; Jeremiah 26:15; Matthew 5:28; Romans 3:15; Ephesians 6:1

Chatting with @creatrix-mea and scrutinizing some in game dialgoue and wiki information to come to the conclusion that Dion's biological mother was an adultress.
She slept with the Emperor, had his child, and when Sylv said "I will take the child, here is Gil to keep your mouth shut and never come back here"
She did.
She gave up her son for some money.
Thankfully, he grew up with Sylv loving him for at least half of his life. It probably hurt a little extra to lose his relationship with his father, knowing his mother sold him for Gil like he was nothing. Now his father is treating him much the same, because of Anabella.
Having the love and respect of his people and his soldiers is very nice of course, but he's a man now, once a child, who was never wanted and only briefly loved.
Nothing makes up for that. At least Terence loved him for everything he was, for being DION and not a prince or bahamut.
(And, thankfully, he has Athena to be his mother in that beautiful verse)

“because she was a whore or an adultress, something dark and dishonorable, or else why was Lord Stark too ashamed to speak of her.”
I feel so bad for Jon, having to think that about his mother. I also feel bad for Lyanna because that’s how her own son thinks of her and I do also feel bad for Ned, who probably wouldn’t want Jon to think of his mother like that because that’s his sister.
I feel bad for everyone involved and I also feel like Ned could have done something, just anything more for Jon’s view of his own mother but I genuinely don’t know what actually ?
