Transformers Armada 2003 - Decepticon Predacon - Function: Warrior/Scientist - Predacon is a fanatic who experiments in the combination of organic tissue and standard Cybertronian robotics. He believes that through this process, Transformers can become far more powerful... and Predacon certainly packs a lethal punch. Though most Cybertronians find this idea repugnant, he was able to amass a cadre of loyal, fanatical followers. This group became big enough to be worrying to the Autobots, who even sent an agent deep undercover to keep an optic on them and hopefully even discover just where this bio-mechanical technology came from, which is one thing the boisterous and charismatic Predacon is remarkably silent about.

More details on the fics below
War AUs
Resistance is Built on Hope by ChronicOlicity ( @chronicolicity). 133K words, WIP. World War II. Also featuring: undercover agents Baze and Chirrut, Jyn and Cassian slowburn as they get to know one another in ways the film didn't have time for, aggression, jealousy, American smuggler Han Solo, and a fully fleshed out setting with excellent minor characters. Bonus points for ruthless General Draven.
until we win... by guineapiggie, 1.5K words, oneshot. World War II. Jyn and Cassian working for the French Resistance together.
Imperial!AUs
every star leads me back to you by winterbones ( @pembrleys). 7.7K words, WIP. Jyn works for Krennic by day, as Cassian's informant by evening, and to find a path for herself to freedom at all times. Featuring characterization that really nails the characters, desperation and darkness, slow simmering tension as they have feelings against their will, and what looks like tight, sharp character arcs. (I was so excited to see this author writing for Cassian/Jyn, and she has not disappointed so far)
Under the Cover of Darkness by plumdarling ( @relift). 30K words, WIP. Both Jyn and Cassian are undercover as Imperials, Jyn as Cassian's bodyguard. Neither knows the other actually works against the Empire. Feelings for the enemy and drama ensues.
Death Trooper One by LiteralTrashHeap_Sry. 13K words, WIP Jyn is a Death Trooper, Cassian a rebel spy who gets caught - by one Jyn Erso. Against all odds, she lets him go. I don't want to say more because of plot spoilers, but the plot's looking fascinating too.
to treat everything as if it were a nail by thingswithteeth ( @things-with-teeth). 12K words, WIP Jyn is raised by Krennic and decides to commit some quality espionage (with the help of Galen) against him. It's amazing for how real Jyn's life as an Imperial feels, not just her life in betraying it.
Untitled by @kylorenvevo.  1K words, oneshot Handler/Spy AU set in the Star Wars 'verse. Where Jyn works undercover with Tarkin, and Cassian is her handler who cares far too much for his "asset".
Canon Divergence AUs:
something always brings me back to you by tryalittlejoytomorrow ( @tryalittlejoytomorrow) 11k words, oneshot. Jyn, Cassian, and the various times they met through the years. Or: the alternate first meeting fic featuring fake makeouts, spy vs spy, masquerade balls, and sex with feelings that we all deserved.
A Thousand Shards of Light by Linay1 ( @rogues-and-rebels). 5K words, WIP What if the Death Star hadn't been built yet, and Jyn was Cassian's target?
cut out in little stars by nymja ( @gizkasparadise). 3K words, WIP Jyn never leaves Saw's cadre. Stranded on an Imperial-controlled Coruscant while running a mission for Saw, Jyn finds herself at the mercy of Rebel Intelligence Agent Cassian Andor. Just one chapter so far of Jyn's life with the cadre, but looking good.
turn down the lights by ginnyweasleys ( @astoriamalfoys). 2K words, oneshot Jyn never leaves Saw's cadre, Cassian is sent to make peace with the Partisans, and ends up tied to her bed. (More) smoking hot sex ensues.
The Words Would Only Rhyme by betweentheheavesofstorm ( @betweentheheavesofstorm). 17K words, WIP Being able to see the future is a lot less cool when it's mostly your future. In this world, Jyn and Cassian stage a jailbreak together, while Jyn tries to make sense of the future, Cassian tries to make sense of her, and feelings ensue despite their best efforts.
Always Together by SockFightChampion01. 13K words, WIP Reincarnation AU. After Scarif, life after life, Jyn and Cassian find one another, as Jedi, as Jedi and Sith, as farmers far away from the Empire. Jyn always remembers; Cassian never does. There is a ton of the beautiful heartache that belongs to these two.
The Remembrance of Pain (Time Will Explain) by Jaded ( @operaticspacetrash) 16k WIP Persuasion AU. Then this glorious story is for you. In this story, Jyn and Cassian met when she was nineteen and fell in love, but Jyn breaks things off out of loyalty to Saw. Five years later, Cassian walks back into her life when she’s an embittered Partisan and he an embittered rebel fighter, and despite themselves, aren’t nearly as over each other as they think. Also, the mutually apparently unrequited pinning is glorious.
Crime/FBI AUs:
In the Shadows by StormDancer ( @hurricanedancer) 20K words, oneshot White Collar/FBI AU. Recc'd everywhere already, for good reason! After the Death Star's destruction, Jyn works (sometimes unwillingly) for an FBI unit headed by one Cassian Andor, alongside Bodhi, Kaytoo, and informants Chirrut and Baze. The slow burn is to die for, characters are just right, character arcs glorious, and all the cameos!
Kill Your Demons by Copper_Nails (Her_Madjesty) ( @coppernailpolish) 2.7K words Assassins AU. Cassian and Jyn head off to assassinate someone, and make out, all written in bitingly sharp prose.
Against Better Judgement (series) by guineapiggie. 5.5K words, 2 oneshots Mobster AU. Cassian as an undercover cop and Jyn as an informant
Soulmates AUs
this is the fate you've carved on me by Selkit ( @coppermarigolds). 8K words, WIP Your soulmate's first words to you are written on your skin. The one where neither Cassian nor Jyn care for soulmate marks when there's a war being fought, and everything hurts.
Pleasure With The Pain by lannisterslioness ( @lannisterslioness). 2.5K words, WIP Soulmates feel the other's pain and scars. Where Jyn doesn't want a soulmate because the war could take him away, Cassian does because he wants the feeling of being whole, and they figure it out right after Jyn punches him. In front of a crowd. And then doubles over after he does.
Sic Itur Ad Astra by ClockworkCourier ( @radiojamming). 2.5K, oneshot Soulmates share a mark on their skin. All the canon-compliant pain and beauty.
Fusions:
Birthright by canardroublard. 4.5K words, WIP Pacific Rim AU of the best sort, where Cassian needs a Jaegar partner, and also a Jaegar, and Jyn, adopted daughter of Saw Gerrera, might be his best chance of getting both.
we were born to make history (series) by chaos_harmony. 7K words, two oneshots Yuri On Ice! AU where Jyn is a washed-up ice skater and Cassian is her coach. Also featuring married Baze and Chirrut making the headlines. It’s fun, affectionate, with the perfect degree of slowburn and character-study angst
Modern AUs:
Paper Jam by Iolaire. 14K WIP Jyn and Cassian are both cynical, snarky science graduate students, and it’s a joy to watch the angry sparks turn into closeness and friendship.
Where's My Love? (series) by randomdreamer01 ( @justkeeponthegrass). 49K words, 11 fics Amazing, amazing heartbreaking series. Cassian and Jyn fall in love fast as a criminal and cop, get married, and splinter apart again in a whirlwind of angst, pining, non-communication and (at the end) hope. I cannot express how much I adore this series and the absolute care put into characterization, the intensity of emotion. Highly recommend.
Happy Endings (are just stories that haven't finished yet) (series) by guineapiggie ( @ruby-red-inky-blue). 20k words, 5 fics Companion to the other series. Just as insightful, emotional, thoughtful, and full of mutual pining.

Robert Maynard & CAUSA
First off Robert, I want to apologize for coming across adversarial. I think your heart is in the right place. I sometimes allow my emotions to get the better part of me. So, please accept my apologies here.
Actually, I didn't realize that you were a lecturer with CAUSA. I do remember you mentioning being a member, just not the lecturing part. I guess if I think about it more, probably all CAUSA members had to lecture at some point.
I was glad to see you quote from the "WACL expose book", once again. In other parts of the book, the authors did a good job in revealing Bo Hi Pak's unsavory connections, ect. However, the book really doesn't address the specific roles of the American CAUSA members. That said, there was, one, very important footnote where Tom Ward's name pops up:
"Alfredo Mingoila, an Argentine secret service agent imprisoned in La Paz [capital of Bolivia] by President Suazo in 1983, told the magazine Der Stern in 1984 that Thomas Ward (a member of the board of CAUSA International) had a direct hand in organizing the coup d'etat of July 17, 1980. He said Ward had worked with the boss of the World Anti-Communist League's Bolivian branch, and in particular with Klaus Barbie, who at the time was helping in the preparations with Colonel Luis Arce Gomez.
In 1984, confirming information coming from Moonie defectors from New York and the Bolivian Interior Ministry revealed that Moon and CAUSA offered $4 million to the 1980 putschists."
https://ia802907.us.archive.org/9/items/pdfy-YAnJOkt3G0B4uEGh/Scott%20%26%20Jon%20Lee%20Anderson%20-%20Inside%20the%20League%20%281986%29.pdf, p. 331
Robert, how do you feel about Tom Ward? What do you think about his connections with Klaus Barbie the Nazi war criminal? Moreover, what else might you know, having been a CAUSA member, about how things "went down" in 1979-81 when Bo Hi Pak, Antonio Betancourt, Tom Ward, Bill Selig & Paul Perry got involved with people in Bolivia that were a part of the cocaine trade (not mentioned in the above excerpt)?
To give you more to think about, Robert, I want to submit excerpts from an article written by a German journalist, who went "undercover" to Bolivia to research the activities of Klaus Barbie. When his cover was blown, he had to flee, but not before gathering the information, that he wrote in this article:
It was not until 1983 that the Bolivian Ministry of the Interior and Bolivian journalists determined that...the Moon sect—as well as others—had invested about $4 million into the preparation of the coup. Membership lists of the political Moon organization "Causa" were found. At the top of the lists were the names of almost all the leading military personnel who, at the same time, had been honoring the swastika in Barbie's lodge...Barbie...had to accept the Moon people as allies.
On May 31, 1981, nine months after the cocaine generals' coup, almost the entire leadership of the Moon sect and their Latin American political organization Causa flew to La Paz...Along with ideological "enlightenment," the education of an anti-communist "people's army" for an "armed church" began. Around 7,000 Bolivians took part in the pre-military training.
The leader of the Moon group in Bolivia was Thomas (Tom) Ward. Barbie and the pale American Ward...were often seen together...Tom Ward was also the man who delivered a payment from the CIA in early 1981 to the Argentinean intelligence Lieutenant Alfredo Mingolla. The $1,500 monthly salary for Mingolla was paid in the Causa office belonging to William Selig, Ward's representative.
Selig put less stock in pious attitudes than his boss. He was an electronic specialist with experience in Vietnam and advised the Bolivian intelligence organization on technical matters. The third man in the CIA cadre of the Moonies was Paul Perry, who had already tried to organize an "armed church" in Brazil.
The Argentinean agent Alfredo Mingolla at first knew little about the connection between the Nazi Barbie and the Moonie Ward. Two days after his recruitment by the CIA, says Mingolla, he met the "Old German" in the courtyard of the Bolivian General Staff. Mingolla came out of department VII of the intelligence agency; Barbie came out of department III.
Barbie greeted his colleague—as Mingolla remembers it, "Hello, comrade, what do I hear? Are you working for a, new employer?" Mingolla answered with surprise, "For what, for who, then?" Barbie: `Na, for Mr. Ward, for example. Mingolla feared reproach. "Yes. Doesn't the organization allow that?" Barbie laughed. "It's okay. There has to be cooperation."
Mingolla says that it was first clear to him on that day that Barbie had become a top man for the CIA. Because only top people knew the names of the other agency employees...The Moon man Tom Ward was Klaus Barbie's CIA contact man only preceding and directly after the putsch of 1980.
Following...sanctions against the military junta...imposed in 1981...The Moon sect disappeared overnight from Bolivia as clandestinely as they had arrived. Only the CIA trio of the Moonies—Ward, Selig, and Perry—stayed on for a while as advisers to the Bolivian information agency in order to assist in an orderly transition to a democratic form of government.
http://covertactionquarterly.net/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/CAQ25.pdf, pp. 35-36
Thanks in advance, Robert, for replying with your "take" on the Bolivian "affair", Tom Ward, ect.
'til the next,
Don Diligent

(CNN)An ongoing federal investigation into public corruption in Tallahassee, Florida, threatens to damage the nascent campaign of Democratic gubernatorial nominee Andrew Gillum, the city’s mayor.
The FBI investigation into whether out-of-town developers were able to influence city development projects has already become fodder for political attacks against the gubernatorial candidate, who won the state’s Democratic primary last week and rose to national prominence because of his historic win and gripping personal story.
“He is embroiled in a lot of corruption scandals,” Rep. Ron DeSantis, Gillum’s Republican opponent, said on Fox News after the primary win. “This guy can’t even run the city of Tallahassee. There is no way Florida voters can entrust him with our entire state.”
Gillum’s level of exposure in the probe remains unclear, though the mayor has long said publicly that the FBI told him he was not a focus of the investigation. His campaign officials have said the same thing and looked to turn the attack back on DeSantis.
“Mayor Gillum is not a subject of the FBI investigation, and he’s committed to rooting out any corruption or wrongdoing in Tallahassee,” said Geoff Burgan, Gillum’s spokesman. “We’re not going to take ethics lectures from Congressman Ron DeSantis, who is marching in lockstep with the most morally, ethically and legally challenged President in American history.”
The FBI declined to comment on the investigation.
Gillum has not been named in any of the subpoenas, but questions have been raised about his potential involvement, in part because the investigators have compelled information from Adam Corey, a lobbyist and longtime Gillum friend who volunteered as finance chair on his 2014 mayoral campaign. Hundreds of Corey’s emails have been posted online, at Gillum’s direction, fodder for Republican groups that will spend millions looking to stop Gillum’s campaign.
Gillum’s ties to Corey, whom he met while he was in college, have long raised questions. The Tallahassee Democrat reported in 2015 that Gillum’s 2013 decision as a city commissioner to vote to fund a multimillion-dollar project tied to Corey through the city’s community redevelopment agency raised questions because of their friendship, even though city lawyers deemed Gillum did not have a conflict of interest.
The vote made way for Corey and other partners to
convert a turn-of-the-century electric plant
into an upmarket restaurant named Edison.
Those questions grew when
the paper reported
on Gillum and Corey vacationing together in Costa Rica, where they agreed to meet with Mike Miller, a name used by one of three FBI agents posing as developers, once they were back in Florida. Gillum’s chief of staff told the paper that the trip was not business related and that he was on vacation with friends. Questions have also been raised about a 2016 trip to New York, where Corey and Miller were also present. A
local television station
published a photo in August of 2017 that showed Corey, Gillum and an FBI agent sitting in the back of a boat in New York harbor with the Statue of Liberty in the background.
According to public documents, the undercover agents posing as developers got close to city officials and lobbyists in an attempt to snuff out public corruption. FBI agents subpoenaed thousands of records in June 2017 and Gillum’s office then
posted those records online
. Reporting from the Tallahassee Democrat found that a cadre of city officials and power brokers have been named in the subpoenas, but Gillum’s campaign has denied any connection to the probe and pledged to work with the FBI.
Even so, Republicans will seek to use the investigation to bludgeon Gillum’s campaign. The Republican Governors Association has already put out a digital ad on the probe and Jon Thompson, a spokesman for the group, told CNN that is likely just the beginning.
“This FBI investigation will haunt Andrew Gillum’s gubernatorial campaign and will be a very lethal attack,” he said.
Jared Leopold, spokesman for the Democratic Governors Association, responded, “Ron DeSantis has spent his political career pandering to far-right fringe elements, by voting to raise the retirement age and jack up health care costs on Floridians with pre-existing conditions. The RGA is desperate to rewrite history now that they’re saddled with a candidate who is more extreme than Trump.”
The Gillum-DeSantis race is likely to be one of the most expensive gubernatorial contests in the country, with both campaigns and outside groups spending millions to control Florida’s executive branch.
Gillum has sought to fight back on the attacks by distancing himself from Corey and pledging to be helpful, while also using his approach to the investigation to attack President Donald Trump, a vocal DeSantis backer.
“We want to make sure that any individual that participated in that is held fully accountable. The good news is, is that it doesn’t involve my government or myself. We have all been fully cooperating,” Gillum told CNN’s Dana Bash in an interview Sunday on “State of the Union.”
Despite their longtime friendship, Gillum also distanced himself from Corey by referring to him as just a campaign volunteer.
Referring to Trump’s constant attacks against the FBI for the ongoing investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election, Gillum added, “The difference between how we have addressed this and how Ron DeSantis and Donald Trump have addressed the FBI is that we have welcomed them and have tried to aid in their work.”
No charges have been filed to date as a result of the Tallahassee probe.

Undercover- Throne of Glass AU
The Prologue for my newest fic is here and I’m so excited for this. I have not decided on an update day for this so bare with me as Surprises is ongoing alongside this:)
I’ll give warnings as I go along but for now, there’s just a few swears in this.
—————
Rowan took a seat behind his desk after handing each member of his team their own stack of files, this was one of their biggest assignments they’d ever been given. Clearly they were all as shocked as he was since Fenrys spoke up;
“We’re seriously doing this? They want us to take down the biggest gang in London? This has been tried many, many times Ro, it’s always backfired.”
Lorcan, his second, scoffed at that “You forget who we are Fen. We’ve never failed an assignment before, and I refuse to let us start now.”
Half of London was owned by one Celaena Sardothien and her merry band of followers were known throughout the city as the ‘Assassins’. No one knew her real name of course, but her inner circle would though and that’s where Rowan wanted himself and his men to be within at least two months and he wanted to have torn apart their whole operation within six.
Connall was the next to speak, brow furrowed and face full of confusion “Our aliases have our own names on. Did they mess that up?”
“No, we’re going in with our own names but if they’re searched, it will come up with false information. I wish we were using something different; however, the last agents to go under fucked up and used the wrong name in front of people. He blew the whole mission so we have to be extra cautious this time boys.”
At this rate, he and he Cadre, some awful name someone had given them, would be doing everything in this goddamn agency. It seemed like everyone had forgotten every ounce of training they’d be give. Fucking useless, the lot of them. Vaughan was still sitting silently, reading and contemplating. Rowan knew that from now until they had to start their mission, Vaughan would study those files until he’d absorbed everything in that clever mind of his, tucking away weak points and weird little bits of information that seemed pointless but could be of use when in a dire situation.
This is why their team worked. He was the leader that made the hard decisions and kept them all safe out in the field. Lorcan was their muscle, would be the first to fight and defend, and would take a bullet for each of them in an instant. The twins were sneaky and cunning, the brains behind their most complicated plans. And then there was Gavriel, who had known Rowan since he was young, was there for advice and counsel, but had the combined talents of them all. Gavriel, the man who had now gone utterly still where he sat. Rowan knew the reason ever since he himself had read the files. Vaughan would soon realise, being the only other person who knew the secret, but he would not tell the others.
“Do you have any other questions?”
Four of them shook their head, Gavriel still did not move.
“Get your ugly faces out of my fucking sight then. You have three days to get yourselves sorted and then we’re out. Gav, stay here for minute please.”
He waited for the click of the door closing before he started speaking again, making sure that they could not be heard.
“You saw the file then I see.”
Gavriel nodded before bracing his elbows on his knees and putting his face in his hands.
“I know this is difficult, but I need you on this Gav. I need you by my side for this.”
The man who’d raised him after his father died, his role model, looked so broken it physically hurt Rowan to have to do this to him. Gavriel lifted his face from his hand and stood, back straight and head high.
“You’ll have no problems Ro, I swear it.”
“Good. You’re dismissed.”
The golden haired man bent his head in acknowledgment and turned to leave but just before he reached the door, Rowan spoke again.
“Aedion, he looks just like you. And with the nickname ‘Wolf of the North’ he’s definitely your son. I wish things could have been different for you, truly.”
Gavriel smiled, a soft and sad smile before whispering gently, “Yeah, me too.” And then he was gone.
Rowan turned back towards the open files on his desk and picked up the photo of ‘Celaena’ and smirked. She was just a spoiled brat given too much power that she thought made her untouchable. He would infiltrate that ring and her inner circle, he’d get close and then he’d tear her apart, destroying everything she loved.
The bitch would have no idea what hit her and Rowan could not wait to see her face when he put her in cuffs.
Your reign is over, Sardothien.

The Geek Squad and the Fourth Amendment
The Post’s Tom Jackman has an interesting story about a criminal case pending in Los Angeles before U.S. District Judge Cormac J. Carney:
At a giant Best Buy repair shop in Brooks, Ky., Geek Squad technicians work on computers owned by people across the country, delving into them to retrieve lost data. Over several years, a handful of those workers have notified the FBI when they see signs of child pornography, earning payments from the agency.
The existence of the small cadre of informants within one of the country’s most popular computer repair services was revealed in the case of a California doctor who is facing federal charges after his hard drive was flagged by a technician. The doctor’s lawyers found that the FBI had cultivated eight “confidential human sources” in the Geek Squad over a four-year period, according to a judge’s order in the case, with all of them receiving some payment.
The case raises issues about privacy and the government use of informants. If a customer turns over their computer for repair, do they forfeit their expectation of privacy, and their Fourth Amendment protection from unreasonable searches? And if an informant is paid, does it compromise their credibility or effectively convert them into an agent of the government?
Best Buy searching a computer is legal — the customer authorized it, and the law does not prohibit private searches. But if Best Buy serves as an arm of the government, then a warrant or specific consent is needed.
This isn’t a new issue. There have been cases on computer repairmen turning over computers with child pornography going back at least as far as the 1990s. See, e.g., United States v. Hall, 142 F.3d 988, 993 (7th Cir. 1998). Among those early cases is United States v. Barth, 26 F. Supp.2d 929 (W.D. Tex. 1998), in which the computer repair technician was also a confidential informant for the FBI.
Here’s the basics of how the law applies. First, if the computer repairman is not deemed a government agent, then the repairman is permitted to turn over the computer to the government. The government can then reconstruct the search of the private-party repairman and use that to get a warrant. There’s currently a 2-2 circuit split on what it means to “reconstruct” the search without a warrant, as I explained in detail here. Two circuits (the 5th and 7th) say that the government can search the entire computer without a warrant based on the repairman’s private search. On the other hand, two circuits (the 6th and 11th) say that the government can look only at the files that the private party observed. The new case is in the 9th Circuit, which hasn’t yet taken a side on the split.
I know of one opinion arguing that a private computer repairman also has independent authority to consent to a government search of a computer, which would mean that the repairman can authorize any government search he likes. See United States v. Anderson, 2007 WL 1121319 (N.D.Ind. 2007). The reasoning of that opinion strikes me as quite weak, though, for reasons I won’t bore you with here.
There is less precedent on how the law applies if the computer repairman is considered a government agent, either at the outset or over the course of handing over that particular computer to the government. I think the issue becomes the scope of the computer owner’s consent under Florida v. Jimeno, 500 U.S. 248 (1991). Under Jimeno, the question is: How would a typical reasonable person familiar with the exchange between the agent and the computer owner understand the scope of consent? Jimeno ordinarily applies when the suspect knows he is consenting to a government search, but at least off the top of my head I would think it also applies to a search when the agent is effectively undercover.
According to the Post story, the government is arguing that the computer owner waived his Fourth Amendment rights because he signed a written form stating that “I am on notice that any product containing child pornography will be turned over to the authorities.” I’m skeptical about that argument. I don’t know the full context, but that language in isolation strikes me as most naturally read as notice that any discovered images would be turned over, not as an understanding that the computer repair technicians would search everywhere on the hard drive to discover such images. Scope of consent issues are always fact-bound, however, so it’s hard to say much more on that.
Finally, you might be wondering, what’s the line between a private-party search and a government agent search? There are no bright lines. And each circuit has its own formulation. In the 9th Circuit, where this case is being litigated, the case I know of best is United States v. Miller, 688 F.2d 652, 657 (9th Cir. 1982), Miller focused the agency inquiry on “(1) whether the government knew of and acquiesced in the intrusive conduct, and (2) whether the party performing the search intended to assist law enforcement efforts or to further his own ends.”
The fact-intensive nature of the Miller test may help explain why the judge is planning a factual hearing on the details of the relationship between the government and the repair technicians. In computer cases in particular, the line between a private-party search and a government agent search can be really hard to draw and can depend on pretty fine factual distinctions. See, e.g., United States v. Jarrett, 338 F.3d 339 (4th Cir. 2003) (exploring the specifics of the relationship between an unidentified hacker and the government in deciding whether the hacker had become a government agent). As always, stay tuned.

Suicide Squad: The 15 Weirdest Members Of All Time
Ever since way back in Rick Flag Sr.’s Squadron S in World War II, the Suicide Squad has always been a group of ragtag rogues that operate in the grey area of morality. This dynamic alone makes for a good read, but it is DC’s deep catalogue of characters to choose from that makes each colorful new line-up of the Squad so much fun.
RELATED: 15 Toughest Suicide Squad Members Of All Time
The point of this list, then, is to document our picks for the oddest, strangest, most ridiculous scoundrels to ever have taken part in the U.S. governments’ most covert agency, Task Force X. From a former resident of Arkham Asylum, to Steve Ditko’s second trippiest character ever, to Grant Morrison himself, we’ve got all of the “Skwad’s” best weirdos!
SHRIKE (II)
A lot of superheroes and villains have strange origin stories, but Shrike’s starts weird and just gets weirder. An ancient alien named Overmaster, who had deemed himself the judge of worlds, arrived on our planet to decide if the human species was worthy to be the Earth’s stewards. To test humanity, he imbues a group of human beings with super powers, designates them his Cadre, and has them fight the Justice League. We’re not sure how any of this was supposed to determine humanity’s worth, but Overmaster created some fun super villains in the process. Shrike was one of them.
Created by Gerry Conway and Chuck Patton, Vanessa Kinsbury was a mentally ill young woman who escaped the facility where she had been committed, when her and Overmaster’s paths crossed. He gave her the powers of flight and a sonic screech similar to that of Black Canary or Marvel’s Banshee. And talk about an “interesting” look, Shrike has Wolverine’s hairdo (but pink), a devil’s tail and she wears what doesn’t amount to much more than a bathing suit, sometimes with fishnets. She joins the team in “Suicide Squad” #24 (1989), and promptly dies on her first mission in “Suicide Squad” #25.
SHRAPNEL
Shrapnel was introduced in “Doom Patrol” during Paul Kupperberg’s run, just before Grant Morrison took over. At the time, Erik Larsen was illustrating the title, so the character definitely has a bit of a ‘90s feel, sort of resembling a metallic version of Marvel’s The Thing. Where it gets strange is that, while it appears he is made of metal, his body is actually a mass of organic fragments that he can control. He can fire these off individually, blow himself apart with concussive force and even grow back lost fragments.
Shrapnel was part of the CIA’s Suicide Squad that was sent to the island nation of Diabloverde to prop up its corrupt ruler, Guedhe, in “Suicide Squad” #63 (1992). He was also part of a second CIA Suicide Squad tasked with capturing the Wiley Wolverman and Sasha Martens version of Hawk & Dove in “Hawk & Dove” #3 (1998). Eventually, he was roped into Waller’s Squad proper, and was given the unenviable job of ambushing Superman in “The Adventures of Superman” #593 (2001).
PLASMUS
Plasmus is a Marv Wolfman and George Perez creation from the early ‘80s. This was the era of nukes, the Three Mile Island accident and Cold War, so of course Plasmus’ origin story includes details of radiation exposure and ex-Nazi experimentation. Plasmus was part of a compact Suicide Squad made up of strictly heavy-hitters, including Chemo and Shrapnel, and lead by powerful telepath Manchester Black. They first appeared as Squad in “Superman: Our Worlds At War Secret Files” #1.
However, it is in “Adventures of Superman” #593 that they lure Superman to an abandoned military facility called Area 8 and jump him. We all know how that turns out — not great. A simple rule of thumb for villains at the this point in DC continuity: Don’t go directly at Supes. Even with a chest full of Kryptonite, like Metallo, it’s probably a bad idea. Even though he was once on the Squad, Plasmus was one of dozens of super villains sent to the distant planet Salvation by Checkmate and Task Force X, which set up the “Salvation Run” mini series.
MINDBOGGLER
While Mindboggler started as a Firestorm rogue, she has spent more time in the pages of “Suicide Squad.” John Ostrander introduced her in his seminal first issue of the title and unceremoniously killed her in “Suicide Squad” #2. But that wasn’t the end of the line for this mind-controlling punk rocker. She may have died at the hands of Rustam, leader of Skwad’s arch-enemies, The Jihad, but the Quraci agency resurrected her in digital form (similar to their former member Djinn), and she returned in “Suicide Squad” #17.
Rick Flag Jr. managed to retrieve the device that held her, but they never managed to bring her back into the fold. Her actual body was reanimated and she returned yet again as one of Koshchei’s zombies in “Suicide Squad #48.” Mindboggler initially gained her powers from Breathtaker of the Assassination Bureau. This is also how fellow assassins Stratos and Incognito got their abilities. All three attempted to fulfil a contract on Firestorm, but ultimately failed.
THE TATTOOED MAN (I)
The first Tattooed Man was Abel Tarrant, a former sailor turned criminal. He used “special paint” to give himself “tattoos” that he could bring to life. To be clear, the “tattoos” were painted on, so they were not done with a tattoo gun or even a needle. This was eventually retconned and it became “magic ink” and actual tattoos, which is less weird… but only very slightly. He joins Task Force X in “Checkmate” #6 (2006), and is killed in the next issue when he is found to be a traitor.
In a 1993 Vertigo mini series titled “Skin Graft: The Adventures of a Tattooed Man,” a jailed Tarrant tattoos a new inmate named John Oakes, who then becomes the second Tattooed Man. Word has it that Common’s character in the “Suicide Squad” movie, Monster T, was supposed to be an interpretation of the third Tattooed Man, Mark Richards. If so, holy wasted opportunity, Batman! How much fun would it have been to see Common’s tats start crawling off of him?
BLACK ORCHID
Black Orchid was a young woman who died and was brought back to life as a plant/human hybrid by a cutting-edge botanist. Just let that sink in for a minute. In her new form, she is super strong, fast, durable and could fly. Yet, her trademark was being a master of disguise. She is revealed to be part of Task Force X in “Suicide Squad” #4 (1987), in which she goes undercover to help take down the vigilante known as William Hell. Orchid has also been in an assemblage of magic’s anti-heroes not dissimilar to the Suicide Squad called the Spirit Squad. This band of magic users is brought together by The Creeper in “Blue Devil Annual” #1.
The New 52 version of this character is part of what is basically the DCnU take on the Spirit Squad, Justice League Dark. She joins this team as an agent of A.R.G.U.S. and is tasked with keeping an eye on John Constantine. Also, Orchid is an important link between The Red and The Green, and was an integral player in the “Rot World” crossover.
LARVANAUT
“Suicide Squad” has long been an excuse for writers to thumb through old DC Who’s Who issues searching for obscure villains that nobody would miss if they happened to fall during a Skwad mission. A number of characters have died in the field secretly working for the US Government, many on their first outing even. However, Larvanaut is different simply because he was created by Keith Giffen and Paco Medina for a single issue. This creature joins a version of Task Force X in “Suicide Squad” #3 (2001), all of whom die on their first mission… except Killer Frost.
All we really know about Larvanaut from his brief DC existence is that he has a heightened sense of smell, he can’t breathe regular air, he tends to walk on all fours, he only has three fingers on each hand, he has a large reptilian tail and his name seems to to be a portmanteau of “larva” and “astronaut.” Pretty damn weird, if you ask us.
CLOCK KING
The Clock King became obsessed with time when he was diagnosed with a terminal illness. He turned to crime to try to gather enough money to provide for an invalid sister once he had passed. Turns out his doctor had mixed up patient files and he was not sick at all! Clock King later became a part of Major Disaster’s Injustice League. During this crew’s last ditch attempt at a big score, they accidentally stopped a diamond heist and, with the help of Maxwell Lord, became the Justice League Antarctica.
This team was eventually disbanded, but half of the members (Clock King, Major Disaster, Big Sir and Cluemaster) ended up as a Suicide Squad, headed by Sgt. Rock and Bulldozer of Easy Company. Clock King’s first appearance as a Squadian was in “Suicide Squad” #3 (2001), the same issue in which Larvanaut makes his inauspicious debut. So, if you read the last entry, you already know this was one of those Task Force X missions that put the “suicide” in Suicide Squad.
MISTER 104
John Ostrander used a rotating cast of nearly four dozen characters during his monumental run with the Modern Age Suicide Squad, and Mister 104 was definitely one of the weirder ones. He can turn his body into any element on the Periodic Table, but was introduced when the Periodic Table only had 103 elements (he started as Mister 103). At this point, he would have to be renamed Mister 118.
Like Shrapnel, 104 is a Doom Patrol villain, but he is from a much earlier run — the ’60s, to be precise. He joins up with an iteration of Task Force X that includes other obscure characters like Psi and Weasel in “Doom Patrol and Suicide Squad” #1 (1988). As the title suggests, this Squad teams up with the Doom Patrol to rescue Hawk (of Hawk & Dove) from Sandistas in Nicaragua. Mister 104 dies in a battle with the Rocket Red Brigade, who also show up to snatch Hawk for Russia.
PUNCH & JEWELEE
These guys are like a low budget version of The Joker and Harley Quinn. However, they show up in the comics 25 years before Harley was even dreamed up by Paul Dini and Bruce Timm. Though, to be fair, the Joker was tormenting Batman a long time before that.
These two former Coney Island puppeteers were originally Captain Atom villains, who had found and mastered alien tech. They are the creation of the venerable Steve Ditko and David Kaler. The married jesters were recruited by Amanda Waller in “Suicide Squad” #24 (1989). They left the Squad when the pair became pregnant, but were pulled back in years later to aid a Mirror Master-led team. The New 52 versions of these characters were just recently introduced in “Batman” #9, as part of the “I Am Suicide” arc. Jewelee was mentally ill and locked up in Arkham Asylum, but she and Punch came through for Bats in his assault on Bane. They thus earned some leniency of the rules there thanks to their quirky teamwork.
AMBUSH BUG
Yet another entry that is more than a little off his rocker, Ambush Bug is more of a DC mascot than an actual superhero. He does have an arch-nemesis, but it’s an argyle sock that looks like Doctor Doom named Argh!Yle! If that wasn’t weird enough, Bug is also a proud member of the “fourth wall breakers club,” a-la Deadpool and Lobo, regularly reaching out to the reader and appearing in meta-stories like “Channel 52″ as a roving reporter within the New 52 universe. However, Bug has also managed to be taken seriously, joining elite DC teams such as the Justice League of America, Doom Patrol, and of course, the Suicide Squad.
Bug’s suit granted him invulnerability and the power to teleport. He became a member of a variation of Task Force X that Amanda Waller put together to help fight the Alien Alliance in “Invasion!” #2 (1989). This Squad included Captain Boomerang, Black Orchid, The Duchess, and was lead by veteran member, Nemesis. Fun fact: Ambush Bug was once married to Dumb Bunny of the Inferior Five.
SHADE THE CHANGING MAN
While Shade the Changing Man has “man” right there in his name, he is actually from the planet Meta, making him a Metan and ill-fitting one particular gender. The bridge between Earth and the Meta-Zone is a dimension called the Zero-Zone, which is where Shade met Task Force X, during issue #16 of  “Suicide Squad” (1988). At the time, the Squad accidentally ended up in the nebulous limbo, but luckily, Shade was able to get them back to Earth. After their encounter, Amanda Waller offers to help return him to Meta if he joins up with her team of unbalance villains.
Unlike alien heroes with super powers, like Superman and Martian Manhunter, Shade had the speed and strength of a slightly above-average man of his age, height and build. What gave him powers was his M-Vest, which projected his appearance differently depending on the current mental state of himself or others. The M-Vest also emitted a powerful force field. Shade the Changing Man is the second entry on our list created by the great Steve Ditko.
COL. COMPUTRON
Colonel Computron was the legacy name of two Flash villains, Basil Nurbin and his daughter, Luna Nurbin. While their appearance suggests they were cyborgs of some kind, both are actually just wearing tech armor. Furthermore, this armor is based on the Captain Computron toy produced by the Wiggins Toy Corp. This is the same company that is owned by Captain Boomerang’s father, W.W. Wiggins.
When Col. Computron popped back up as a floating head in “Checkmate” #11, he didn’t even know he was working for Amanda Waller in a hush-hush line up of the Squad. At this point, Waller was the White Queen of Checkmate and was in direct violation of UN statutes by sanctioning Suicide Squad activity of any kind. Yet, with the help of her operatives, she had rigged a Santa Prisca election to avoid a Bane-backed candidate taking power. Rick Flag Jr., Fire and King Faraday were all in league with Waller at this point, but the full cast of this Squad was never revealed.
GRANT MORRISON
Yes, Grant Morrison doesn’t just write superhero comic books, he redefines them… sometimes by entering them, himself. In the last issue of his “Animal Man” run, Buddy Baker manages to make it to our reality and “meet his maker,” as it were. Morrison tells Buddy that he is the author of his life, before resetting everything he had written and wiping the slate clean for the next scribe.
So, it’s kind of awesome that John Ostrander paid tribute to Morrison by bringing a character called The Writer — clearly a visual and thematic homage to Morrison — into his popular “Suicide Squad” run. The character joins up in “Suicide Squad” #58 (1991), along with a bunch of other villains that are recruited to help neutralize sorcerer Circe and her army of werebeasts and Amazons. In that issue, he tells Firehawk and Silver Swan that his portable computer either tells him what is going to happen or he actually writes what is going to happen. Sadly, he dies when he gets writer’s block while a werebeast is coming at him.
JOKER’S DAUGHTER
It doesn’t get much weirder than Duela Dent. The character has been around since the late ‘60s, and has a long and convoluted continuity. Her history is one thing pre-Crisis On Infinite Earths, and another thing entirely post-Crisis. It’s quite different yet again with her New 52 reimagining. The original version of this mentally unstable youngster claimed to be the daughter of almost every villain in Batman’s rogue gallery: The Joker, The Riddler, Penguin, Catwoman and Scarecrow.
However, it is the New 52 Duela we are concerned with for this entry, as that’s the version that joined the ranks of Vic Sage’s Task Force X in “New Suicide Squad” #1 (2014). This iteration of her is deeply troubled and intent on snuffing out anything beautiful. It’s implied she is a former heroin addict and self-mutilator. When she finds The Joker’s cut-off face in the sewers where she dwells, she eats a bit of it and then proceeds to wear the rest. Now, that is #1 spot weird! Fun Fact: The New 52 Duela has one blue eye and one green eye as a homage to Two-Face, who is believed to be her real father for most of her history.
Is there anyone weirder than the Suicide Squad team members on this list? If so, let us know in the comments!

This was meant to go up Friday but my new laptop turned up late, and from now on the schedule should be a Thursday/Friday.
Warnings: Swearing and brief mentions of violence. I’ll update these as the story progresses.

—————
Aelin couldn’t help but grin from as she watched her family bicker amongst themselves. They were in the house they all used for small gatherings including family dinner and movie night or for when they were waiting for new recruits to arrive, such as now.  She was sat at the edge of the room in her window seat where she could see every exit and could have her eyes on every person in the room. Manon and Dorian were sparring in the middle of the room, neither one of them managing to keep the other down for very long before they were at each other’s throats once more.
Aedion and Lysandra were curled up on the loveseat together, the dark haired girl giggling at whatever her cousin had just whispered in her ear, which in turn made Aelin want to smile and gag at the same time. Elide was cleaning her gun as she sat on the floor between Ren’s legs as he braided the girls hair. And last but not least, Chaol was currently fussing over a pregnant Yrene who would bat his hands away and kept threatening to poison him if he didn’t stop.
The last group of muscle they had hired turned out to be undercovers that Aedion convinced her should be left alive, unfortunately, not to mention that they were absolutely fucking useless considering their backgrounds. This time around, Aelin allowed Elide to do the search because the girl was not only capable of killing a man twice her size in under a minute; she was also the biggest nerd and hacker amongst them. Her second in command had pulled through, and when she came to Aelin a few days ago to show her the files, she was told she could have whatever new knives she wanted for such an amazing find. The smaller girl had grinned that awful grin which even terrified Manon sometimes.
Everyone was on alert in a second at the sound of the doorbell and had moved into place by time it had stopped ringing through the house. Aelin was now seated behind her desk with her feet up and hands folded across her stomach.
Celaena Sardothien was present now.
The others were spread about the room, her cousin to her right and Elide to her left, while Lysandra went to greet the new recruits. It would have been Yrene once upon a time, but Celaena refused to let her when she told everyone about the baby. That was their one rule. You do not harm a child. And the gods fucking help you if you do.
Lys came back into the room and wiggled her brows at Celaena before moving to stand beside Ren at the back as five very tall, tanned and muscled men came through just behind her. The first to enter was the man she knew to be one Rowan Whitehorn, sporting an incredibly bored look, much like his second. Lorcan Salvaterre was right on his heels, followed closely by the rest of this little band of misfits. The twins, Fenrys and Connall, she remembered, were the only one with smiles on their faces. Mischievous was a correct description. Vaughan was quiet and looked quite shy on the outside, but she knew he was calculating and planning as he scanned the room and the people inside of it. The last to enter was Gavriel. She hadn’t noticed before, you can’t ever see things in photos, but as he stood before her now in the flesh, there was a familiarity about him that she couldn’t place exactly.
Celaena smirked, making an obvious show of looking them up and down as she spoke, “Gentlemen, welcome. It’s so lovely to finally meet you all.”
They all gave a short bow of their heads with a muttered “Miss Sardothien”.
Manon snorted at that and was promptly glared at when it didn’t go unnoticed by the men before her. The witch rolled her eyes and went back to looking at her nails as if she was entirely uninterested, yet she was the complete opposite.
“Please boys, ignore the formalities. You may call me Celaena,” each of them were clearly about to nod once more but she continued before they could, “if you can survive one little test.”
oOoOo
Rowan was now regretting this whole assignment. Sardothien was an entitled brat that clearly thought this whole thing was a god damned game. She was nineteen years old and had somehow inherited Rhoe Galathynius' empire. It would have made sense to go to Ashryver, being one of the only living relatives Rhoe had left. The whole thing was absurd if you asked him and he couldn’t wait until he and the Cadre had taken everything apart piece by piece.
He wouldn’t let her know how he felt so through gritted teeth he asked, “A test, Miss Sardothien?”
Celaena stood and walked around to the other side of her desk and leaned back against it, still smiling. Rowan didn’t think that he liked that smile which quite clearly said trouble was brewing.
“Yes Whitehorn, a test. Am I not allowed to test people who wish to work for me as I see fit?”
Fucking hell, if this carried on then the mission would be over faster than they expected because he had killed her. “Of course you are. I apologise if I made it sound otherwise.”
He received nothing other than a raised brow and quick once over.
Bitch.
“As I was saying before I was interrupted, if you pass this little test, you’re all hired. If not, well, you won’t be suited here.”
Holding back an eye roll at something as childish as a test, he conceded, “What test ma’am?”
“See how polite this one is Havilliard, why have you never called me ‘ma’am’?” she called out to one Dorian Havilliard, who Rowan knew to be Celaena’s mercy killer. He had the unfortunate job of killing one of their members if any of their injuries were too severe to treat. No matter what business they may be in, he felt for the man and hoped he’d never have to do such a thing for one of his own. He banished the thought when he heard Dorian scoff before her Royal Highness continued.
“If your second here can last at least five minutes in a sparring match against my own second, we have a deal.”
Lorcan, ever one to prove he was better than most, agreed before Rowan could say anything and that time he did roll his eyes.
“Done.” He sneered as he turned to the right of the woman to face Aedion and beckoned for him to come forward. Within seconds of that display the whole room began laughing and more importantly, Blackbeak full on cackled as she noticed their shocked faces. He realised why when a strong feminine voice full of mockery and laughter said;
“I’m over here sweetheart.”
He turned to see Elide Lochan in all her tiny glory, giving his second a smile that even sent shivers down his own spine. There wasn’t much about her in the file they had, just that she was an excellent techy and had disposed of her own Uncle after he tried to sell her off into some underground prostitution ring over in France. No wonder she was second in command when she was so inconspicuous. He should have guessed.
Rowan had barely any time to process the information before she moved faster than he could blink, landing a powerful left hook to Lorcan’s jaw which resulted in his ass meeting the floor.
oOoOo
Having a woman hand him his ass should not have turned Lorcan on, but by the gods it did.
She was a feisty little fireball and Lorcan hadn’t had such a tiring workout since that day six years ago when Whitehorn had nearly killed him and beat him black and blue. He had been an angry, hateful mess after the accident and no one could out last that icy rage for very long. So he had endured it full force until the silver haired had broken down in his arms.
Sardothien did indeed call time after what were a very long five minutes and the two of them were left panting and sweaty in the middle of the room, gazes locked. Lorcan wished it was a different activity that had left them that way.
Enough Salvaterre, you’re here to take them down. No fucking the enemy.
“I’m impressed. Nobody ever lasts even two against Elide, not even the Wolf over there.” The bitch queen jerked her thumb over her shoulder to where Ashryver was standing, who simply flipped her off. Many would have been killed by their bosses for such behaviour, but apparently everything worked differently here.
This was going to be difficult.
“Ren you shit stain, show them to their rooms. You’ll be on the first floor along with Manon, Dorian, Lys and Aedion. They’re very loud lovers so I hope you brought ear plugs with you.” She said it with a smile and wiggled her fingers in goodbye as they were ushered out of the room by a man with a scar on his face. Just before the door closed, Lorcan saw the swagger facade drop as Celaena fussed over her second, worry written on her face as she turned the dark haired woman’s face this way and that way.
Each individual room was pointed out to them by Ren as they passed, he didn’t look too happy to be given the job though. The twins were in the room closest to the stairs, next to them was Vaughan and Gavriel and then himself on his own followed by Rowan’s own closest to the next flight of stairs up. They stopped outside of Rowan’s room before they were allowed to disperse and were given a few ground rules as if they were dogs.
“Boss says you can use the ground floor as you wish; watch a movie, read a book or whatever. You are not to go up to the second floor with permission from Lochan or the Boss herself. Most of us have our own houses so we won’t all be here twenty for hours. The only permanent ones for now will be the Boss, Lochan, the Westfalls and myself. Any questions?”
They all shook their heads which was apparently deemed acceptable.
“Good. Take the day to get yourselves situated; we’re all having dinner at seven, if you can call it that. Don’t be late.”
He nodded before disappearing back down the stairs and Rowan addressed them now that they were alone.
“Get unpacked and sorted.  I want you mingling to your heart’s content tonight, the faster they trust us, the faster their empire falls. Understood?”
They each murmured a “Yes Sir” before walking back to their own respective rooms and Fenrys and Connall went to the stairs to go get their bags from the car. Just before he could turn the handle to his room, he stopped when Rowan spoke again, all seriousness and a stern look.
“Oh and Lorcan? Keep your fucking dick out of tiny, short tempered ladies please. I will not allow us to fail because your hormones led you astray.”
Vaughan chuckled under his breath while Gavriel just shook his head, the twins already out of hearing distance, thank fuck.
A woman had never messed with his morals before and he certainly wasn’t going to let such a thing happen this time.
Not now and not ever.

—————
The house was wrecked. A total shit show. Pictures had fallen from the walls, broken glass vases were scattered across the floor and when Aelin stepped into the hall fully, there was blood spattered in various places. There was a crunch under her boot as she made for the stairs and looking down she was standing on a photo. It was the day Chaol and Yrene had told everyone about the baby; Chaol had taken it, everyone surrounding his wife with faces full of joy and happy tears. The rage that she had managed to tamper came back to the surface as she shouted, “Chaol!”
“Up here boss!”
Before she went to them she addressed the rest of the group, “Lochan, Salvaterre, Blackbeak and the Twins, I want the house checked from top to bottom. Nothing goes overlooked. The rest of you are with me.”
She was taking the stairs two at a time before anyone even had a chance to respond, but they would do what was asked of them. Walking through the door to the master bedroom, part of Aelin wanted to cry at the sight, but she held herself in check. Yrene was sat in bed, leaning against the headboard, small cuts on her cheek and her eye was beginning to bruise but what got to Aelin the most was the shaking of the other woman’s hands, which were covered in blood.  When Yrene saw them in the doorway she gave a small smile, trying to show that she was alright. “Hey, the cavalry's here.”
“Are you both alright?” It was Dorian who asked but Aelin didn’t berate him for overstepping, his best friend’s home was attacked and she was surprised he hadn’t lost his shit yet.
Chaol answered while gently cleaning off his wife’s hands. “We’re okay, Dor,” the man being addressed let out a relieved sigh at the words, “Yrene is just a little shaken up.”
Aelin knew why, gods how she knew. The first time you ever end a life, it takes something from you that you can never get back, leaving a dark spot on your soul that haunts you from then onwards. But if she could get her to talk about it, help Yrene justify why she had to do it, why it was the only choice she could make in that moment, then it might take away some of the guilt. “Chaol said you took two of them out.” She watched as the woman breathed in and out a few times before she made eye contact.
“I’m sorry boss. You always want them alive when things like this happen but they had me cornered and they said things about the baby. They were, they were goi-” She stopped talking as she let out a choked sob, her hands moving to hold her swollen stomach where that little miracle was growing. Before Aelin could say that it didn’t matter, that she was proud, that Yrene did what she had to protect her family, Gavriel’s low voice sounded from behind her.
“If you’d like, I can check everything with the baby is alright, Mrs. Westfall. I’m very well trained and I assume you have things I can use. Unless of course, you’d like to take her to a hospital, Ma’am?” Aelin couldn’t take her to a hospital this time, not with the cuts and bruises, it would start raising questions and she didn’t have the time to threaten a bunch of prying doctors.
“Thank you, we’ll get her back to the house first, we have our own little infirmary. Get your stuff packed, you’ll be at the big house until further notice. Now, where are the three that were left alive?”
If people wanted to start going after her family, then they were going to have to deal with the consequences.
oOoOo
Sometimes, people always told the story where there were two wolves living inside of you, fighting with each other. Rowan had never really believed in the bullshit until now, watching Sardothien circle three men menacingly, knife in one hand and a gun in the other, as if she was debating which she’d prefer. The agent in him was screaming at him to stop this, arrest her now, but the other was laughing like the devil, telling him that they deserved it for going after a pregnant woman, a child. But all he could do was watch and listen as the smile on her face grew into something quite sickening.
“You see boys, you clearly know who I am as you’re in the home of two of my people, but clearly you underestimated what you were up against.” Her voice was cold and dead as if she didn’t have any emotions, as if she wasn’t even a fucking person.  The only people in the room were Sardothien, Lochan, Blackbeak, Havilliard and himself. The house had been checked and there was nothing for them to find. Blackbeak had a manic grin on her face, same as her boss, like she couldn’t wait to get her hands on the pieces of shit, Havilliard was quietly seething on Rowan’s left side but as for Lochan, there was a mask she’d put on since they left and hour earlier and it hadn’t broken once. He’d never outwardly show it, but secretly part of him was terrified of them all.
“All you have to do is tell me everything I want to know and I’ll let you live.” Rowan assessed the three men tied to the chair before him, looking for any tells about them, when the one on the right caught his eye. Built the same as he and Lorcan, you’d think the man wouldn’t have been taken captive so easily. He was the only one glaring daggers into Celaena’s skull with a slight curl to his lip, and his fingers were twitching as though he was desperate to feel a weapon in his hands. Looks like someone held a grudge, which meant he had more information than the other two would and if there was a bigger mind behind all of this, then he was probably the most trusted. Praying that he wouldn’t put his foot in it this early into the mission, he risked speaking up.
“That one boss,” he nodded his head in the direction of his chosen target, “he doesn’t seem to like you very much whereas the other two look like they’re about to piss in their pants from you just being in the room. I wager he’s got something of interest for you.” The long feared Assassin Queen eyed him slowly, a fire in her turquoise eyes that he’d never seen before, and then turned to look at the raging man in the chair. A condescending laugh left her and recognition flashed across her face.
“I know you. You’re one of Arobynn’s little bitches. So that answers my question as to who sent you. But why you in particular? You always were useless and disobedient, I mean, how many times were disciplined for still touching even after you were told no?” Blackbeak went deathly still at the insinuation, which clearly meant there was quite a dark back-story there. Rowan knew the name, Arobynn Hamel was the man Celaena worked for before she managed to become the most feared woman in London, the man who had ‘owned’ her, or so he liked to believe. If it really was him behind this then it could escalate into a gang war quite quickly, hindering Rowan and the Cadre’s mission severely. It wouldn’t be awful he supposed, killing two birds with one stone and all that. He came back to himself when the man spat on Sardothien’s boots.
“And you were always the favourite, you ungrateful little wench. He gave you everything and you turned your back on him in an instant. Could have reigned over London side by side, but you couldn’t see what was right in front of you.” Rowan watched as she tensed up but only for a second before her body eased, that sadistic smile never left her face though. There was nothing in their files at the agency about such a relationship between the two, but he knew Arobynn liked to take in kids off the streets from a young age, grooming them to be his loyal little followers. Celaena was the same background as all of his men, so what made her so special?
Celaena moved around the chair to stand behind the three of them, the two who hadn’t spoken had closed their eyes as the trembling of their bodies increased. She tucked the gun back into the holster on her thigh before bringing the knife up to the man’s cheek, “I don’t like to ask things more than once, so, you’re going to tell me what he wants right now and save yourself a world of pain.”
“Go to hell, whore.”
“Your choice, I suppose.”
And so she dug that blade into the skin of his cheek and dragged downwards; Rowan watched as he screamed and jerked in the chair, trying to pull himself away from the blade. When all he did was sit there panting when she asked for information again, her blade moved just to the side of the previous cut and dragged down once more. It felt as though he stood in that room for hours, watching her maim a man’s face but could have only been thirty minutes. With four slices through each cheek, two through one eyebrow, Celaena was now prepared to slice part of an ear off when one of the others started shouting. “Stop, stop, stop! I’ll tell you anything just please, I can’t take the screams anymore.” Even as the words were said, she still sliced off the top of the other one’s ear.
The man that had tried to stop everything started outwardly sobbing and spewing out information as if he had no control. “He wants you back you fucking bitch! Arobynn wants you to come home, so he’s going to do everything to make you, but if you come back willingly everyone one you care about won’t have to die.”
Celaena was feral now, slicing the man in front of her one more time before moving back into their lines of vision. “Who disarmed the alarms?”
They each exchanged a look but said, at least, until she made to go back in again with the knife. “Cortland! Cortland took them out but we don’t know where he is, no one ever knows where he is except the boss.”
“Anything else you can tell me, boys?” They shook their heads desperately, pulling on their restraints.
“Very well, we’re done here. Blackbeack,” the white haired woman stepped forward, “do what you want with them, but be discreet.”
“It would be my pleasure, boss.” A knife was already twirling in her fingers of one hand an-
Oh god, those were fucking pliers in the other. Rowan didn’t even see where she had gotten them from.
All of them started protesting, squirming in their chairs, yelling every profanity they knew. “You lying bastard! You said that if we told you then we could go free.”
Lochan and Havilliard were already out of the door, and Rowan was holding it open, gritting his teeth at the fact he was about to allow three murders to go without doing anything. Celaena didn’t even look back as she sauntered to the door, “You’re all rapists, abusers and traffickers and you really thought I’d let you live. I hope the devil has fun with your sorry carcasses.”
When they were back out in the hall, both of the Westfalls were coming down the stairs and Celaena ordered Gav, Lorcan, Aedion and Lochan to escort them back to the house, just as the screams started from behind them. He and his men flinched at the brutality but there was no reaction from any of the others.
Rowan wanted to hate what was happening in that room, but knowing who those men were and what they had done, he found that he didn’t care.
Like he said, two wolves and one body, but right now his bad wolf was winning.
