Dates with the bachelors
Harvey - coffee shop on a Sunday, he brought you flowers in a mason jar. mugs of steaming coffee, organic cranberry muffins, doing the crossword together, enjoying quiet jazz in the background, stealing looks with little blushes, sharing random health facts and news bits and things about the weather, talking about meeting up for a workout sometime and realizing you might need to update your athletic wardrobe, but then remembering this man has seen you in ripped overalls and muddy boots and does not seem to care
Elliott - moonlight beach picnic with wine and fire roasted lobster (only the best for you, dear), rolling up pant legs to dip your toes in the water and playfully splash each other, snuggling with the picnic blanket, reading plays aloud as originally intended, feeding each other chocolates and pomegranate seeds for dessert, nestling your nose in his lovely hair as you lean against his shoulder, he kisses your hand as he shares his affection for you is growing
Sam - trip to rock and roll museum in Zuzu, laughing and holding hands, sharing random trivia about your favorite songs, him kissing you mid-sentence as you talk enthusiastically when he realizes you love the same stuff he does, smiling and folding the collar on his jean jacket and kissing him back as you wrap your arms around his neck, finding the best pizza shop and enjoying a slice while hanging out at the skate park to watch the sunset, realizing you missed the bus back to Stardew Valley, listening to street musicians, grabbing late night donuts from a hole-in-the-wall place (mmm... maple bars)
Sebastian - a semi-awkward dinner at an expensive sushi restaurant in Zuzu, then mutually realizing fancy dressup dinners aren't your thing, motorcycle ride to the overlook, making wishes on shooting stars, talking about his plans to create his own RPG and giving him feedback and ideas as he's excited you're interested, and when it starts to rain, you take shelter in an abandoned cabin, he lights a roaring fire (surprisingly reveals he was a Boy Scout... also his mom is the town carpenter), and you stay up all night talking about game mechanics, worldbuilding, and character creation, and in the morning, as you both prepare to leave after the storm, you stand on your tiptoes in the doorway and kiss him, thanking him for a lovely night.
Alex - meets you at the bus stop with his pickup and he smiles because you teasingly steal his ball cap and wear it backward, and he thinks it looks good on you, driving you to the city while listening to country tunes, windows down, fresh air blowing, singing off key, arriving at a gridball game and enjoying ballpark franks, cold brews, and garlic fries, cheering loudly for your team, impressing him with your pro knowledge, standing between his arms so you don't keep jumping up and annoying the people behind you, feeling his hands squeeze you gently, learning he's actually really great at massage as he's helped George with physical therapy, making out like teenagers in the truck after your team wins, remembering Evelyn packed you homemade cookies for the trip, taking the long route home so you have more time to talk and enjoy each other's company.
Shane - sneaking a couple of sandwiches, pieces of fruit, chips, and colas out of the back of JojaMart, sitting near the dumpsters and he lights a candle from the market to help with the scent, feeding the stray kittens who wander by, noticing how gentle this giant of a man is with the animals, feeling warmth and pride, interrupted by Morris who yells at Shane for breaking the rules, and after he returns inside, you decide to do something that would really irk Shane's boss - you sit on his lap facing him and kiss him passionately, fingers in his hair, legs wrapped around him, and after coming up for air a few minutes later, he asks when he can see you next.

instead of studying i decided to spent my time outlining some tattoo headcanons i have for sam... some more thoughts below the cut!
Tumblr media
in order of how he got them:
vince's snail: i have a little brother 11 years my junior- i know that when you have such a large age gap between you and your sibling, your role dissipates as an older sibling and you end up becoming a second parent. yes of course my little brother still relies on our mother and father, however when he has an issue with friends, needs homework help, is hungry/thirsty/lonely/mad/crying/WHATEVER- he comes to me first. especially with kent gone and jodi busy trying to support her boys, sam had to take on both a fatherly and motherly role towards vincent, despite still being a kid himself- thus he did all the mom/dad-type things: take him out to the park, teach him how to ride his bike, collect all his little scraps of doodles and writing throughout his school career, bandage him up upon skinning his knees during a tumble... one day vincent presents a colored paper, clearly with lots of love and effort put into it. vincent has a sort of strange fascination with snails and knows his brother loves to skateboard... putting two together to create quite a funny joke, he grew a little snail riding a skateboard! sam adored it so much and upon turning 18, he realized that vincent's drawing is probably the best idea in the entire world for a first tattoo!
sam moved to the valley, went to high school with abigail and sebastian, vibed together in band class -> became besties and ultimately formed a band upon graduating. they never thought they'd get far but once, after a small short set at the harvest festival a few years after forming the pelicans, a young woman excitedly complimented the trio, telling them of a battle of the bands night next week at zuzu city at the club she works at -> they should totally enter! they won EASILY and capped the night with partying + lots of booze -> maybe made some bad ideas! the three woke up in a trashy motel with killer headaches and a tattoo on their inner arms. jodi, robin, and caroline all went livid!
he had always been called a people pleaser by all sorts of people in all sorts of ways- by friends who were charmed with how he always seemed to put others above himself, by jealous onlookers who resented how easily he offered himself to be of help, by exes who despised how he always had to play the good guy... he couldn't wrap his head around how that's not necessarily a good thing- how sometimes giving too many pieces of yourself will leave you hollow. he instead wears the title as badge of honor, staining it above his heart!
upon meeting delilah and realizing just how head over heels he's in love with her, it's only natural he would do anything to make her smile. their relationship was something he's never experienced before: just everything seemed like total bliss- nothing like what he's grown up accustomed to [absent husbands, crying wives...] it only made sense he'd ink his love for her as a permanent tattoo. . . one hot summer morning, delilah took a pair of scissors to his mullet after he complained that he couldn't sleep- his hair was getting long and the heat was unbearable. while trimming his locks, she recalled a myth of a woman who cut the blessed hair of her lover, which rendered him weak and ultimately got him murdered brutally- people argued that despite knowing she meant ill, he loved her far too greatly to deny her anything- the twist, delilah added as she yanked his hair, trying to remove the knots- is that they bore the same names as the couple. and it was such an ironic thing that sam couldn't forget it... upon realizing delilah's the woman he wants to marry, he decided to get a tattoo of its symbolism- a pair of scissors upon his back. delilah would run a finger across it at night and laugh to herself. yes, sam would die for her, happily so- whatever she needs, even if if be his death- he'd oblige.
a year after their wedding, sam and delilah got matching tattoos because they are fucking insane <3 sam with his bunch of dahlias and delilah with a sun <3 lowkeyyy in love with themmmm

How the Bachelors and Bachlorettes surprise the farmer on Valentines Day!
So, my friend @soft-bois-make-me-simp and I decided we wanted to collab for something on Valentines Day!! As this was our first time doing a collab with another person, we actually had a ton of fun throwing around ideas and getting stuff together! Not to mention that they had so many ideas that my mind was swimming, it was honestly so cool. I have a hard time writing about the bachelorettes, but they just blew me out of the water. I couldn’t have done this post without them and it was totally worth it. We had a ton of fun so we hope you enjoy this!!! All the Bachelors and Bachelorettes are below, thanks and WE LOVE Y’ALL. HAPPY VALENTINES DAY!!!!
I did all the bachelors! @soft-bois-make-me-simp did all the bachelorettes!
Bachelors~
Harvey
Oh, he spends a lot of time trying to present you with the best Valentine's Day present. He researches ideas on how to do that. In the end, he decides he wants to surprise you with dinner at his place and he is prepared. Throughout the day he spends it gifting you different presents like flowers, little love notes, and even a box of chocolates! Then, he calls you up and invites you over. Opening the door to the clinic, rose petals line the floor leading up to his door upstairs. Stepping into his room, the lighting is low with candles and jazz quietly breaking up the silence in the background. There’s a table set up in the middle of the room with a lacy pink tablecloth, dinner is set up, and rose petals decorate the floor. “H-hey!” He says nervously to you, “I-I wanted to surprise you, d-do you like it?” Even without the room completely lit up you know he’s blushing, but you can see that he’s wearing a nice undershirt like he always wears, but without his long green coat, and he’s wearing dark dress pants. He approaches you and softly gives you a kiss on the cheek, he then pulls you into a big hug. The dinner was delicious and you two spend the time complimenting each other and being in each other’s company. After dinner you help him clean up, you then see that he had been researching on how to be romantic… by watching romance movies. His efforts to show you how much he appreciates and loves you shows no bounds. He walks you home and before you walk through the door he says, “I love you, you know? I really do love you.”
Elliott
You wake up at your usual time and head outside to do your daily chores. You head towards the mail box and it’s stuffed to the brim with letters! Eyes wide, every single one is addressed from Elliott, you carry the stack of letters inside and as you open them they’re all love notes with various dates on them. By checking each date you realize he had been writing love notes, with you mind, for an entire month! You check the one for today’s date and it’s the shortest letter within the stack. He explains that he wants you to meet him at his place around 8pm but he doesn’t explain why (his signature has many red hearts around it.) Arriving at his place at 8pm he greets with a big hug and a tender kiss, “I could hardly wait for you, my love!” In his small shack he put together a wonderful dinner for you two to enjoy. During the meal he explains his love for you the only way a poet would, it goes from him desiring your beauty over the sun to how excited he gets whenever you’re in view. After dinner he gestures for you to sit and relax on his bed. The evening ends with him playing the piano, he wrote a piece (for the first time) completely inspired by you and the love he holds for you… and only you.
Alex
He is up and ready at 6am. With groggy eyes you open the door to see Alex with a big goofy smile holding flowers. “Good morning! I just wanted to say that I love you!” He says this all in one breath and thrusts the flowers to you, “I’ll come pick you up at 6pm. I love you, bye!” It seemed over in a flash once you accepted the flowers, but he seemed confident and happy- you couldn’t deny his puppy dog eyes. At 6pm he strolls up the path, and linking your arm with his, you both begin to walk to the beach. Nervously scratching the back of his neck, he blushes and says, “You’ve been there for me a lot. I know I’m not book smart or anything, but you’ve been my-” he reaches in his pocket to pull out a scribbled note, “-light at the end of the tunnel. I’ve never loved anyone more than I’ve loved you,” He awkwardly laughs, and with the sun setting behind him he stops and holds both your hands in his. His eyes are full of love and devotion, “I found these in Zuzu City, I hope you like them,” He pulls out matching necklaces giving you the one with ‘A’ on it. “See, this one has your letter on it! I hope you like it,” You couldn’t say no and he helped you put the necklace on. With his large and goofy smile you two end the evening in each other’s company, holding hands and watching the sun set.
Sebastian
Sebastian gets really excited to show you a new DND adventure that he’s compiled for you two to play. He explains that he’s thought about this for a while and through a slew of note writing and trial and error, he is convinced that he has made you the best gift for Valentines Day. It’s an odd adventure that asks you to find Sebastian his one true love- you laugh thinking it’s just Sebastian being goofy but you play along. Through fighting and exploration you begin to gather clues as to who his true love is supposed to be, the clues are subtle but explain the personality and appearance of the one he wants to be with. At the end of the campaign you smile because all along, through all the notes you’ve gathered throughout the adventure, they all describe you. You are his one true love and the only one he wants to be with.
Sam
Sending you a letter in the mail, Sam explains he wants for you to be home around 8pm. Course you comply, a bit curious considering you had no idea what he had planned. Coming up the path, carrying his guitar, he gives you an awkward smile. He seems nervous and his voice sounds shaky when he greets you, “I wasn’t sure what to give you for Valentines Day, so I did what I know best,” he says, unlocking his guitar case. He gestures for you to sit and with a shaky voice begins to play the guitar and sing you a love song that he created himself. Sam avoids eye contact with you for a bit as he plays, unsure of how you feel about it, but as time went he grew more confident. When he locks eyes with you it’s filled with appreciation, love, and admiration. After finishing his song he gives you a hug and a kiss on the cheek- he didn’t want to be with anyone else.
Shane
Shane decides that he wants to take you out to the Stardrop Saloon for Valentines Day. He opens the door for you and as you two sit he gives you a peck on the cheek. You can tell he’s certainly trying as you see he has gel in his hair and he’s wearing clean clothes. “I… Look, I don’t do sappy stuff, b-but you know, I really enjoy your company and I-uh I wanted to try and do something special for you.” He explains as a blushy mess, he avoids eye contact with you as he says this, but you can tell by the sound of his voice that he really means it. Without ever ordering, Gus approaches the table with a big smile and sets down a pizza that’s in the shape of a heart! “I-uh… I really like you, you know. I’m not good with this stuff, but you mean a lot to me so let’s enjoy some pizza!” He remarks trying to divert the conversation from anything sappy. Through the rest of the night he spends it trying to make you laugh, and you didn’t know how late it had gotten until Gus had kicked you guys out. When he walks you home you see him noticeably get sadder, you realize that he never wanted the night to end.
Bachelorettes~
Abigail
Abigail wants to take you for an adventure. One where it’s quiet and a place only she knows about, or so she thinks. Telling you to clear your schedule that day and to meet near the wizard tower she’ll blindfold you. It’s a secret she wants to share with you, but when she reveals the secret forest you smile at her. Hesitating for a second to tell her that you’ve been here often though when she’s about to lead you to a dead end and you tell her; she knows it wasn’t a secret to you. She asks you to lead the way to the pond where she has a blanket prepared and asks you to sit down. Once you are settled she plays you a piece on her flute that you haven’t heard before. It’s calming and beautiful, you would even describe it as enchanting. After she finished she tells you it was an original piece inspired by you.
Emily
Waking up you find Emily gone from her side of the bed. In her place was a wrapped up box tied together with a bow and a note saying Open. Inside was an outfit that was absolutely stunning in your favorite color. It was a more formal attire then what you both normally wear but that wasn’t all that was in the box. Another note attached to it saying she hopes you get a positive energy from the outfit as it was made with love. For another surprise please wear it and meet at the bus stop at 7pm. Wearing your new glamorous outfit that fits like a glove you see Emily dressed up and waiting for you. She takes you to ZuZu City where to your surprise the bus stops in front of a ballroom studio. Emily tells you she’s been taking a class on the “Dances of Love” and wanted to show you what she’s learned. You spend the rest of the night dancing, both getting lost in the music and each other.
Haley
Haley didn’t mention to keep your schedule open or to come at a certain time but you knew Valentine’s Day was important to her. It was a day she looked forward too each year and you were excited to spend it with her. After the chores around the farm were done you headed to her house with a pink cake you made yourself and a sunflower pouch Emily helped you make. You put the cake in the kitchen and head to her room. She was standing in front of the vanity, but when you walked in you heard a closing noise, almost like a book being closed. She is holding something behind her back when you approach she shoves something into your hands. It’s a scrapbook decorated in pink and sunflowers with both your names on the cover in a heart. Opening it, it's a collage of photos she’s taken over the time you’ve spent together. Polaroids of the first gift you gave her, your date with the cows, some of the mornings you’ve spent together and all the events you’ve been to together. She goes over how special each moment is to her and tears up saying how much of a better person you made her. Thanking you for coming into her life and showing how beautiful a photo can truly be when you’re in it.
Maru
Waking up you were excited as Maru asked you to meet her tonight. A special viewing of the stars with you space girl is something that always makes you happy. Though walking out you see all your crops have been waterd, in fact next to your crops were sprinklers. Confused, you walk to the mailbox where you find a letter from Maru telling you she built some sprinklers for you and if they are something you liked she’s happy to make more. She also reminds you about tonight and to dress warm! When the time arrives you head to the mountain and enjoy hearing her talk about space. That is until she mentions one star that you’ve never noticed before. She asks if you know the name but it’s one you are unfamiliar with. Maru smiles at your confusion. Telling you that for Valentine’s day her present besides the sprinklers, was getting you a star. A way that if you ever need to be reminded of her love just look up and know that she loves you more than all the stars in the sky.
Leah
Everyone in town was buzzing about a big Valentine’s event happening this year. It was something that was kept a big secret and nobody in town knew what was happening just what time to go. Leah was not one to usually express extreme interest in going to town events but she seemed very excited for this one. If not to find out what was the big event you decided to go for Leah. She mentions having to finish up some work and she’ll meet you at the event so heading alone you’re floored when you see it’s an art show. Not just any art show but one Leah is putting on! It’s a Valentine’s day art show with each piece centered around the theme of love. She tells you how you inspired these pieces and how you are her muse. Not just for today but forever.
Penny
Ever since the chili incident you have been trying your best to avoid Penny’s cooking. You love her, you really do and want to support her but cooking was just not a strong point. So when she asks you to a Valentine’s day picnic where she plans on cooking the food you’re a little hesitant but seeing her eyes light up talking about it you tell her of course. Walking into the forest you see her and a large basket next to her. She starts talking out dish after dish and encouraging you to try them all. You take a pepper popper and eat it. It was really good! You try all the different dishes from the stuffing to fish stew all delicious. She tells you she’s been practicing with Gus and is very happy to see you eating her cooking. Penny tells you she has one more surprise and gives you a book. It was your favorite book, looking inside you noticed a message. It was a message from the author, she got your book signed by your favorite author. Penny tells you to look on the last page as well where she wrote a note, although this book may be your favorite, our story will always be mine.

A chime from your phone jolted your attention off your screen.
It was that time of the day already. Even though you heard this notification every single day, you were always startled by it.
The sound of your freedom.
Turning back to your desktop screen, you skimmed over the information once more. Hopefully it was error free - you managed to keep up your zero-tolerance policy for mistakes to get this far, no messing up now. Hitting save, your mouse flew across the screen to shut down your computer.
Grabbing your favourite travel mug and shoving it into your bag, you stood up, feeling the stretch in, well, everything. Your eyes drifted over the walls of your cubical, spying the dull grey walls of the office you worked in. Nothing but the sounds of typing and quiet murmurs filled the efficiency focused workspace.
Just another typical day for you.
You wondered if the sun had already set - the lack of windows made the place feel like a prison. If the building was a prison, you were their captive. Locked up in the daily grind lifestyle.
At least the pay was decent.
Tossing on your jacket and picking up your bag, you checked over your phone notifications as your feet moved on autopilot towards the exit.
“Done for the day, (Y/N)?”
Your co-worker’s voice made you pause right before the door.
“Yup,” you responded with a plastered on smile. What was their name again? “Are you?”
“Got to work overtime today.”
“Ahh, good luck. Keep up the good work.”
“Thanks. Have a good night.”
You immediately picked up your pace and your fake smile disappeared. One awkward encounter was more than enough. Your exhausted brain still had no idea what their name was. It probably started with a... G? Maybe?
As sad as it was, they didn’t really matter. Not to you anyways.
Popping into the elevator, you pressed the ground floor. Whatever energy that had been sapped out of you all day was being restored with every step you took leaving the building.
You could see the glow of the streetlights outside. Looks like the sun had set for a while now. It wouldn’t be long before the stars would come out.
Spying the company logo as you walked out, you let out a big sigh.
Joja Corporation.
Being able to find a job that gave you a living salary as a young adult should have made you happy. You lived on your own and had a growing savings account. Not much else going on though.
Ever since starting your life at Joja, your life had become monotonous.
Wake up. Work. Sleep. Repeat.
Super exciting.
Work life balance? More like work was your life.
Just as you sat down in your car, your phone pinged. Pulling your phone out, you saw a cheerful notification from your mom.
‘Look what I found cleaning! You looked so happy whenever you went to visit your grandpa. Hope things are going well with work!’
Attached was a picture of you and your late grandpa on his farm - he passed away a few years ago. You admired him when you were young, he was a man who stuck to his beliefs and had the kindest heart. Time with him in Stardew Valley always felt like it moved more slowly than the city life you knew but flew by regardless.
“I wonder if things have changed,” you murmured. “It’s been years...”
Starting up your car, you started to drive home. Nights like tonight were busy, Fridays brought out the nightlife more than any other night. The lane you were in crawled forward at a turtle’s pace even at a green light.
Letting out a puff of air, you decided to do something different. Signaling and switching to right lane, you drove without braking for a while. Gliding on the quiet roads heading out of the city, the serene darkness welcomed you with open arms. Letting the city disappear behind you along with all the uncertainties.
You finally started to slow down when you approached the familiar outlook point that let you see the city from afar.
Even from where you were, you could see the Joja Corporation company you worked at.
What did it take to make the company disappear?
Parking, you turned off your engine and stepped out of your car. Nature’s silence greeted your ears as the crickets’ quiet chirped and the breezes tickled the grass. Sitting on the hood of your car, you leaned back to rest on your elbows as you stared at the night sky with the moon and stars watching from above.
“Something needs to change,” you declared to yourself.
Saying the words out loud made it feel more real. Confirmed.
You were young and could have a bright future ahead of you. Why were you letting Joja take your excitement for living away?
You weren’t sure how long it had been, but the sound of a motorcycle approaching caught your attention. Keeping your eyes on the sky, you listened as the motorcycle stopped nearby. As their engine cut off, the sound of footsteps crunching on gravel filled the air instead.
Everything fell back silent for a few minutes. Both knowing that each other were there but not saying anything to each other.
After a while, the footsteps started to approach you. The person had moved so that they were right next to you, leaning against your car as well.
“So you’re here tonight too,” he said, greeting you. “Didn’t think I’d see you.”
You tilted your head to the side to look at him. “Nice to see you too, Seb.”
The corner of his lip moved upward, as a smile grew on his face. The moon captured his gentle features, not letting the darkness hide any of his surreal charm.
Meeting Sebastian was like a lucky opportunity with fate - the two of you had been complete strangers who happened to be overlooking the city nightscape when your car decided to play matchmaking by revealing a flat tire. Ever since then, Sebastian and you would meet completely by coincidence when the feeling of needing to get away from life happened.
Sitting up, you moved you head so it was resting on Sebastian’s shoulder as you let out a sigh.
“Rough day?” he asked softly.
“Kind of. I... don’t know how to keep living life this way,” you explained.
“You don’t mean anything... extreme, do you?”
“No, no, no... Nothing like that.”
“Ah... Good,” Sebastian responded, sounding reassured by your response as he wrapped an arm around your shoulders. You could feel his warmth seeping into you. Could he hear how loud your heart was around him? Hopefully not. “Office life in Zuzu City not as great as you hoped?”
You nodded. He knew you pretty well for someone you barely saw and communicated with.
“Do you think I should quit?” you asked.
“That’s completely up to you. Don’t let yourself suffer too much.”
You laughed. What a Sebastian thing to say. The way he expressed that he cared wasn’t always through the traditional means and phrases.
“What about you then, Seb? Did you come here as a result of suffering too?”
Sebastian responded with a half shrug. “I usually hang out with my friends on a Friday night at the local pub, but something came up this week. Thought I’d take the chance to get away. I guess I am suffering from seeing you though.”
“Hey!” you exclaimed indignantly as you sat up straight.
Seb laughed. “That’s not what I meant. I’m suffering from seeing you looking so troubled.”
You offered him a smile. “How sweet of you.”
“I mean what I say, (Y/N).”
“I know.”
Staring at the distant lights, you thought about the photo your mom sent you. Stardew Valley. Your grandpa had left you his farm. A few years back when you first started working at Joja Corporation, you had opened the letter your grandpa addressed to you. Back then, you thought giving the office job a try would be an okay alternative. The farm now felt like a good alternative.
This was a big decision though. You didn’t want to make a decision on the spot.
“Sebastian?”
The boy hummed in response.
“Have you ever been somewhere with someone and everything just feels... right?”
Sebastian stiffened as he turned to look at you. “Yeah... I have.”
Your (E/C) eyes looked at him curiously. Then your brain finally finished processing what you just said out loud - that sounded like a confession. Your cheeks immediately heated up.
“Oh! I’m sorry! I didn’t mean it that way - although, I do actually really like you, Seb.”
Your flustered response brought a rosy hue to the dark haired male’s face as well. Honestly, he thought you were absolutely adorable. Even in your most uncertain moments, he appreciated how honest you were. Interweaving your fingers together, he gently bumped his shoulder with yours.
“Go on,” he encouraged.
Heart racing from the unexpected confession you expressed, you tried to reorganize your thoughts within your scrambled brain. Unable to look at Sebastian, you turned your gaze up to the night sky and gave his hand a little squeeze.
“I used to visit my grandpa a lot over summer break when I was young,” you began. “He passed away years ago, but I inherited his old farm. I’m just thinking, I move away from Zuzu City to live in the countryside. Have you ever heard of Pelican Town in Stardew Valley?”
Sebastian seemed to have frozen up when you mentioned Stardew Valley.
“Yeah... I’m actually from Stardew.”
Wait - what?
You quickly turned to look at him. “Really?!”
He nodded. “Guess I never mentioned that to you. But if you think you really need a change of scenery from Zuzu City, Pelican Town is feels like a different world entirely.”
You thought back to the idyllic days you had spent with your grandpa in the past. Seb was right, it was so different from the world you were living in Zuzu City.
“I’m sure not everything is different,” you said, thinking out loud. A bright smile appeared on your face. “You’ll be there, won’t you?”
Getting to see how beautiful you were when you were truly happy made Sebastian want to see that stunning smile of your more often. He never would have thought this unexpected friendship to blossom into something more, but he truly cherished what he had with you.
“I’ll be there,” he affirmed. He held up your joined hands. “I’d like to be here for you whenever you need it as well.”
 “I’d appreciate that,” you softly responded.
Sitting with Sebastian with the night sky above you and the distance city lights twinkling in the distance, you finally felt a sense of hope for the future. Perhaps the change you were waiting for had been here all along.

Delving Beneath the Surface
Hello! Here is the first chapter of my new Stardew Valley fanfic - Delving Beneath the Surface. Follow my farmer, Verona, as she searches for dwarven artifacts to learn their language, lost to the ages. If you’re interested in following along, I’ll be updating it here on AO3 and here on Wattpad. Enjoy!
~~~~~~~~~
The Stardrop Saloon was the place to be on a Friday night.
More accurately, it was the only place to be in Pelican Town on a Friday night.
Verona chatted amicably with Emily as she fixed her a drink behind the bar. She asked Haley to join her, but she chose to spend the night with Alex instead. She mentioned something about not wanting to interact with her sister more than she thought was necessary, but Verona struggled to understand why. Sure, Emily had her quirks, but in the end, she was sweeter than Robin’s strawberry crumble.
And she always gave her a discount on drinks when Gus had his back turned.
Emily slid her drink across the beaten counter. “You should really stop by more often. You brighten up the room with that aura of yours.” She motioned to her, the crystal beads on her wrists catching the light like a disco ball. “It has this shimmer I don’t often see around here. Maybe because you’re from out of town.”
“Thanks,” she heard the doubt in her voice, “I think?”
“Oh, don’t worry. It’s a compliment.” She sighed dreamily. “I think you’re rubbing off on Haley. Her aura used to be so blah, but now it’s much brighter. I suspect you have something to do with it.”
She merely smiled as she took a sip of her drink. The orange juice and grenadine barely masked the burn of liquor. Emily was also very generous with her alcohol. One of her mixed drinks left the room spinning if she drank it too quickly. And she never needed more than one. It was a mistake she only made once after she woke up, half-naked and covered in hay, with Shane. The pair agreed never to speak of it again. They had taken to avoiding each other ever since.
Even now, he refused to meet her eye from across the bar.
Clearing her throat, she set her drink aside and said, “We both know she’s a lot nicer than people give her credit for. She just needs to warm up to someone first.”
Emily leaned against the bar, cradling her cheek in her palm. “Oh, I know how sweet she can be, but I like to see her hanging out with someone who isn’t Alex. I love that boy, I really do, but he’s a bit bland for my tastes.”
Verona shrugged. “Alex is fine.”
“No one wants to be described as fine,” Emily said with a knowing smile, “Unless they’re being called fine.” Verona shook her head, earning an airy laugh. “You know I’m right.”
“I will neither confirm nor deny such things.”
Emily pouted. “Boo. You’re no fun.”
At the end of the bar, a harried-looking Elliott plopped down in a seat and waved Emily over. She eyed him warily, then turned back to Verona. “He must have finished another long writing session,” she whispered so only she could hear, “he always comes here for a celebratory glass of wine, but if you ask me, his first order of business should be the bathhouse.”
Verona hid her smile in her drink.
With a smirk, she added, “I got to keep working, but let me know when you need a refill. It’s on the house. Just don’t tell Gus.”
“You spoil me.”
“Anything for my sister’s best friend.”
Like she said, sweeter than strawberry crumble.
Drink in hand, Verona wandered over to the game room on the far side of the saloon. Abigail and the boys normally laid claim to it before she arrived. The enduring smell of cigarette smoke and old pizza proved that much. To her surprise, the trio was absent that evening and the game room abandoned. She stepped inside, studying the games consoles on the long wall.
She lingered on one – Journey of the Prairie King. The monitor transitioned between the trial and the high scores.
The coveted first place belonged to someone with the initials SQM.
She glanced back at the bar. No one paid her any mind. The chatter was loud enough to drown out the jaunty music coming from the console. Surely, no one would miss her if she played a game or two.
Fishing a coin from her pocket, she shoved it into the machine. The monitor transitioned away from the high scores and straight into the game. The goal was simple enough. Shoot enemies and avoid getting touched. She could manage that.
Her fingers flew across the control pad. Dodge, shoot, collect. She enjoyed the thrill that came with these games. No strategy needed. Something to kill time and sweep her away. That was exactly what she needed after a long week of farm work. Ten minutes came and went in the blink of any eye. The LED lights on the marquee lit up followed by the crawl of the ‘high score’ animation across the screen.
She threw her hands up and whooped triumphantly. “Take that SQM.” She replaced their initials with her own – VDS. The screen popped up and she took a moment to revel in her victory. Pulling a coin from her pocket, she started another game. At the very least, she could knock SQM to third place before she called it a night.
“What are you doing?”
Verona whipped around. Sebastian leaned against the doorframe with his arms crossed tight over his chest. She shifted in front of the console and sputtered, “Me? I was just killing time, or whatever.” It beeped and flashed, signaling her loss. “And I’m not very good.”
“Whatever.”
He made a beeline for the pool cues on the far wall. She watched as he reached for one, then seemed to reconsider, grabbing the one beside it. He weighed it in his hand with a satisfied hum and turned to the table.
“Playing pool by yourself?”
He ignored her as he organized the balls in the triangle rack. She stood opposite him, watching quietly. The soft clack of plastic filled the empty air between them as she waited for him to acknowledge her. A minute passed before she sighed and took the cue ball, rolling it idly between her hands. “Not much of a talker, eh?”
Silence.
“Haley mentioned that you like to keep to yourself.” A muscle in his jaw tightened. “And that you don’t get out much, which seems kind of mean if you ask me. One could argue that I don’t get out very much because I—”
“Look,” Sebastian cut her with a glare, “I’m not interested in…”
He trailed off, zeroing in on her chest. Her blood coated her veins like a thin sheet of ice. She should have been used to the stares by now. It happened all the time in Zuzu City. On the street, the subways, around the Joja office. Eyes followed her wherever she went. She hoped Pelican Town would be different, but evidently not.
“Where did you get that?”
Her brow pitched. “Where did I get what?”
He took a step towards her. She matched it with a step back. Surprise colored his features as he studied her. The full brunt of his gaze unnerved her, but it felt far from predatory in the way that she was used to. The fear that swelled in her gut must have translated on her face because he stepped back, giving her the space that she needed. The pressure that weighed on her chest lightened until she could breathe again.
“That.” He motioned to her chest. She followed the line of his gaze to the pendant hanging off her neck. A pale blue gemstone on a simple chain. “Do you know what that is?”
She found the gemstone while exploring the mines earlier that week. Amongst the snow and ice coating the lower levels, she almost missed it, but it caught the light of her flashlight just right. When she got home, she decided it would make a lovely necklace and threw it on a chain.
“It’s a necklace.”
He gave her a long look. “That’s a frozen tear.”
She stared at him. Was that supposed to resonate with her or something? He scratched irritably at the nape of his neck. The shaved underside of his head had grown out and curled around his ears. She noted the reddish hue at his roots and bit back a smile.
“Legend says those are the tears of yetis that inhabited the mines thousands of years ago. The museum used to have one, but it was stolen with the rest of the collection.” He gave her a once over – like he suspected her of stealing it. She had a killer alibi considering that happened years before she arrived in town – and they both knew it. “How did you manage to find one?”
“I found it while gathering ore the other day.” She brushed her fingers over the gemstone, marveling at how it still felt cold to the touch. Maybe there was some truth to the legend after all. “I had no idea these were so rare.”
“Wait. You went down to the mines by yourself?” She braced herself, already anticipating the direction this conversation was about to go. “Why? Wouldn’t that ruin your manicure or something?”
She threw her whole body into the eye roll she gave him. He had no idea. With all the work she did on the farm, there was no hope of salvaging her cuticles. The closest nail tech was two hours away. She had neither the money nor the time to do anything about it.
“Well, yeah, it does,” she deadpanned, “but I also want to commission some tappers for trees to make a little extra money, but Clint’s ore prices are ridiculous.”
“You’re telling me that little miss pageant princess went down to the mine alone?”
Verona resisted the urge to groan. If she had known that rumor would spread like wildfire, then she would have kept that chapter of her life to herself. Granted, she never expected a polite conversation with Jodi to end with half the town knowing about her history with frilly gowns and tiaras. She came here for a fresh start, but she couldn’t escape her past that easily.
Sebastian sized her up. “And you came back unscathed? I call bullshit.”
“I wouldn’t say unscathed.” She teased the sleeve of her sweater. “I had to buy a drugstore worth of bandages and antiseptic from Harvey when I got back. Those bats are merciless.”
She pushed up her sleeves and showed him the bandages wrapped around her forearms. The cuts had stopped bleeding, but a few gashes still looked nasty, so she kept them wrapped until they healed a little more. Harvey warned her that a few would probably scar, so there went her flawless skin. Her mother would have a meltdown if she ever found out, but she could cross that proverbial bridge later.
“Okay,” Sebastian grimaced, “but why go down?”
“The prices here are ridiculous,” she reiterated, “Pierre already bleeds me dry at the turn of the season when I buy seeds. I can’t afford Clint’s ore prices on top of it. If I can gather it myself, then I will.”
“Fair enough.” He turned back to the pool balls, signaling the end of their conversation.
Verona was never one to pay attention to those signals. “So, are you playing pool alone?”
He sighed. “Sam got stuck re-stocking shelves at work and Abigail is helping her dad with inventory. They’ll stop by later, but I decided to come ahead and set things up for us.” He swiped the cue ball from her hands and set it on the table. “So, no, I’m not playing alone.”
“You don’t strike me as someone who plays pool.”
He snorted. “Yeah, well, I would have never pegged you as a gamer.” He nodded to the consoler. “I was ranked number one, but I guess I’ll have to settle for second place.”
Her blink betrayed her surprise. “SQM?”
“Sebastian Quincy McCarthy. What? You thought Sam had the high score?” He rolled his eyes and turned back to the pool table. “I love the guy, but the guitar is the only thing he has going for him. You de-throned me, so thanks for that.”
With a shrug, she said, “In my family, second place is unacceptable.”
“I’m used to second place, so whatever.”
A frown toyed on her lips. What was that supposed to mean? Before she could press, her phone vibrated in her back pocket. A text from Haley greeted her, followed quickly by three more. She skimmed the messages and cursed. Alex ditched her for a last minute gridball game and she wasn’t taking it well. She tucked her phone away. That meant her night and this conversation was officially over.
“I gotta go.”
Sebastian hummed in response, which was better than being ignored, so she took it. Turning to leave, she stopped short. Her gaze fell back to the necklace. Genuine awe like his was hard to come by. It’s not like she needed this frozen tear. She had plenty of gems to make jewelry at home. This obviously meant something to him.
“But before I go,” she pulled the chain over her head, “I want you to have this.”
She offered it to him. He made a face, caught somewhere between surprise and his usual jaded indifference. The two emotions fought for control until he ducked his head. The crown of his head burned crimson. “What? Why?”
“Consider it a gift.” She kept her hand outstretched towards him.
Sebastian shook his head. “No. You’re the one who found it. It’s your prize for surviving the bats. I’ll find one eventually.” He hid his hands in the pockets of his oversized hoodie. Verona sucked irritably on a tooth. As if that would save him.
“I find plenty of cool things in the mines,” she countered, “I can make necklaces from a jade or ruby. This means something to you. I want you to have it.” She took another step towards him, nearly flush with his chest. His breath hitched as she peered up at him through her lashes. It might have been a cute moment if not for the fierce determination coloring her features.
“I insist.” Standing on her tiptoes, she managed to drape the necklace over his head.
His fingers wrapped instinctively around the gem. The corner of his mouth twitched up into the faintest hint of a smile. “It’s still cold,” he breathed in disbelief, “but how? It’s the middle of the…” His eyes fluttered as he refocused on her face. Sawdust and cigarette smoke clung to him, barely masked by the smell of peppermint on his breath.
“Thanks, I,” he swallowed hard, “I appreciate it.”
She beamed at him as she stepped away, breaking whatever that moment might have become. “I’m glad I could give you something you really wanted.” If possible, his blush darkened. “And if you ever want to play pool and the others aren’t around. I’d be more than happy to—”
The bubbly beat of Haley’s ringtone cut her off. Verona swore under her breath and brought it to her ear. “I’m on my way. You can tell me everything over a glass of wine.” She threw a wave over her shoulder as she hurried out of the saloon, not bothering to look back and see if he returned it.
Tumblr media
It was a fair, amene afternoon in the valley. It was still early Spring, the days were getting progressively longer and the weather was on that pleasant midpoint between the cold of Winter and the oppressive, humid heat of Summer.
Earlier that day, Sebastian had a lunch date in the city, with a professional violinist at the State Orchestra, one he was quite anticipating. They met over in the internet, their interests and personalities aligned quite nicely, and, as his friend Sam notes, she was exceedingly hot, with a blond hair with a blue streak hidden under the thick tresses and a slender, hourglass figure.
Really, even a man of high standards would find this girl a perfect candidate.
Such positive expectations made Abigail and Sam want to check on their friend as soon as possible, as Sebastian was awfully pleasant to be around whenever it so happens his mood struck a good note. Besides, they were much curious about whether the violinist lived up to the hype.
Alas, they had no luck and he was in no high spirits. When the two of them walked into his basement room, they found Sebastian laying across his bed sideways, his head hanging off of his bed so his friends appeared upside down as they walked in.
With a heaviness on their collective heart, the first thing they noticed was the smell of alcohol and the bottle in Sebastian hands, Abigail quickly taking it from him muttering something about spilling it and his stepfather’s rage if he saw the state of the young man.
Sebastian had a frown on his face as he rubbed his hands over his face in frustration and let out a long groan. Abigail walked up to the bed and sat down in front of him, pulling his hands away from his face.
“What’s up, Sebby?” Abigail asks with an encouraging tone, but still using the nickname as a jab, one he had not dignified himself to respond. “Any reason you are drunk so early?”
Before Sebastian could answer, Sam followed up with another question of his own.
“Yeah! I thought you finally had a date today! What happened?” His tone was cheery as usual, a mood the blond boy often defaults to whenever faced with uncomfortable situations.
Sebastian groaned again pulling a different bottle of hard spirits from under his bed as Abigail confiscated the last one, swinging it on his mouth and wondering why he was not feeling the pleasant burning on his throat.
“She just wasn’t right.” He slurred his words as he spoke.
Abigail walked away from the bed after pulling the unopened bottle from Sebastian’s hand, motioning to place it along with the other on the computer desk.
“Don’t you think it strange how every girl hasn’t been, quote-unquote, right, ever since that night with the farmer down the road?” The purple-haired girl wondered, knowing very well the answer to her question.
She means, of course, the late-night road trip they took to a cliff, beyond the county town, halfway to Zuzu City. Neither friend knew exactly why he chose to take the farmer there, of all places, but they knew they had a heart-to-heart and he emerged a changed man from it.
Sebastian attempted to glare at Abigail for his words but he could not hold back a smile in his drunken state as soon as he heard a reference to the girl living downhill from him.
Nevertheless, with the mention, he also felt frustrated and sad, and that made him want another gulp of hard alcohol. he yanked the bottle out of Abigail’s hands and quickly opened it taking a gulp of the amber liquid before the girl managed to pull it back away from him, while yelling severely at him.
“Sebastian, what is so wrong for you to have to drink yourself numb?” The purple-haired sneered. “You are falling for the girl. Admit it and pull yourself, and us, may I add, out of our damn misery!”
Sebastian put his hands over his ears like a child, his head getting increasingly flushed from both blushing and from hanging upside down on his bed. He rolled around until he was sat up in his bed cross legged with his hands in his lap as he fiddled with his thumbs.
“It feels like the sky is falling.” He muttered, feeling despondent. “How do I live with these damn sentiments?”
Sebastian was always over dramatic, and so the pair rolled their eyes dismissively.
“For the love of all Yoba, stop being such a drama queen, Sebastian!” Sam quickly dismissed. “Can’t you tell she obviously likes you too? She’s always hanging around you, she has given you a king’s ransom in pumpkin soup and yeti’s tears, not to mention that bouquet of hers, and she damn blushes at the very mention of your name. It’s kind of pathetic, really.”
Sebastian continued complaining about his new found feelings. “It feels like my heart is going to burst.”
Abigail came back from dumping the alcohol on the toilet and placing the bottles on the computer desk once again and began to tease Sebastian.
“Looks like it’s the death of a bachelor. A sad occasion, indeed.” She commented with a chuckle. “No more fooling around for you, Sebby. It’d do well to simply commit with a woman that clearly wants to put up with your ugly face and terrible demeanour come hell or high water. How will you ever survive?”
Sebastian pulled his blankets over his head, trying to no avail to rid his head of the burned images of the auburn-haired girl as he mumbled before he drifted off into a drunken sleep.
“I’m so fucked.” He bemoaned before started to snore softly.
The pair of friends rolled their eyes once again and left quietly. Sebastian with high spirits was very pleasant to be around, but a hungover Sebastian was a mean one, indeed. Besides, a little headache might be just what clears out his ideas.
A New Sun Part 11
My internal alarm screamed me awake 6 am sharp, I squeezed my eyes shut, forcing peaceful thoughts into my head and willed myself back to sleep. It lasted just a few moments before Ash pressed his cold, wet nose to my cheek, making me bolt upright. I scowled down at the pup who was mid-stretch. Wiping the cold snot from my face I started my morning routine. Feed Asher, start coffee, let Ash out, stare at clothing.
That last part posing a problem today. Usually I’d just put on my work clothes, but today I was going back to Zuzu and clothes that were stained in hues of browns and greens from the farm wouldn’t fly.
I ended up having to go through unopened boxes to find something clean, a pair of black high wasted shorts, a loose fitting red tank top and black sneakers. I checked the time, the clock blinked 6:30. I frowned. I didn’t have to meet the others until nine. I looked around my little home frowning. There wasn’t a whole lot to do. I padded into the bathroom, I had unpacked all my toiletries a few weeks ago. I stared down at the unused jars of lotions, the untouched eye shadow palettes and make up brushes. It was hard to believe that just a month ago I was using this stuff every day.An idea hit me as I looked at the packs of unused face mask, grabbing one and stuffing my clothes into a bag and grabbing a to go cup of coffee I headed out the front door with Asher.
A short walk later I was at the hot springs, I quickly changed into my bathing suit and shoved my stuff inside a locker. Ash had found a spot under a bench, his eyes already heavy with sleep. I submerged myself in the steaming water. I sighed with relief as my muscles began to relax, my jaw unclenching, brows unfurrowing, shoulders dropping away from my ears. My eyes grew heavy from the warmth and humidity and I let out a long yawn. I reached for my coffee and took a long sip. I would need to start making this part of my routine, I needed to remember to care for my body especially after everything I’ve been putting it through.
After another long sip of coffee I smeared the face mask on. It was supposed to help remove built up dirt and help brighten the skin. Yoba knows I needed that. Everything I owned seemed to have a fine layer of dirt built up on it. I took the time cleaning every inch of myself, feeling layers of grime fall away. I had showered every day since coming to the Valley, I had to or my own stench would suffocate me in my sleep. But there was something magical about these waters, I soon felt like a brand new person.
With great hesitation I finally removed myself from the pool to go and get ready. First I peeled the face mask off which had melded to my face like concrete. I stared in disgust at the horrors it had pulled from my pores and tossed it in the nearest trash. Asher poked his head inside the trash can and I shooed him away. I changed and did minimal with my make up, there was no point in lathering it on when tomorrow they would go untouched once again. I checked the time, it was already 8:30. I hurriedly packed all my stuff up and headed back to the farm. Dropping my bag off at the house then taking Asher to Lewis’s. I bumped into Sam as I was starting back north.
“Look at you!’ he whistled and lowered his sun glasses. “All clean and stuff.”
“It took me a hot minute to find these,” I said with a chuckle. “I woke up at my usual time, so I thought I’d gussy myself up for you lot.”
“For us or for Sebastian?” Sam quirked an eyebrow up.
I ignored his comment and busied myself with trying to pull my mane of curls into a loose bun.
Abigail and Sebastian were already waiting for us at the bus stop, Sebastian’s long legs stretched out in front of him clad in faded black jeans with rips in the knees, cigarette hanging from his lips. Abigail had a paper cup in her slender fingers and she took two long gulps from it. Her purple hair hung over her shoulder in a braid. “Morning guys!” she beamed up at from her seat on the bench. Sam plopped down next to her, throwing an arm around her shoulders. That left the only seat open next to Sebastian, I stayed standing.
It wasn’t much longer before the train pulled into the station and we were off. It was only an hour ride into the city and I was back into the belly of the beast.
“What should we do first?” Abbie asked as we stepped out of the train station and into the noise of the city. I was silent as my senses adjusted to the sights and noises that raged over me. I had never noticed the thick layer of smog that hung over the city and tumbled into the streets, the sunlight still managed to be harsh somehow. The light turned green and traffic began to speed by, my heartbeat quickened and I took a step back, backing up into Sebastian. His eyebrows knitted together and he looked down at me. “You okay?” he asked.
Abbie turned and looked at us, Sam was already staring a frown on his face. I nodded and gulped down a bit of air. “Fine, just sensory over load, I guess,” I let out a nervous laugh.
“Well, is there anything you would like to do first?” Sam asked.
“We could go by the Joja building and flick it off.”
Behind me Sebastian snorted.
“You know, that’s actually not a bad idea,” Sam beamed.
“I’m down, then can we go by the mall?” Abbie asked.
“Yeah! I want to go by that new indoor skate park that they just built there!” Sam jumped in place.
“Bash?” I looked at him, he hadn’t spoken much this entire time. He shrugged. “I’m just along for the ride.”
“Don’t let him fool you Kit, he’s having fun,” Abbie smiled.
“A blast,” Sebastian smirked.
“So, Joja?” Sam asked.
“This way,” I pointed and took point. Nothing had changed, the streets had all remained the same, life in the city had continued in my absence.
“So why is this on your to-do list?” Sam questioned.
“I forgot to do it when I quit,” I said matter-of-factually.
“You used to work for Joja?” Abbie had made her way next to me.
I nodded. “I was a manager for the warranty department. I actually lived in an apartment just a few blocks from here.” I paused, we were on the opposite side of the road from Joja building. With the tiny windowed slots in the gray concrete exterior, it looked just like a prison.
“Yeesh,” Sam shivered next to me. I patted his shoulder. “Don’t worry it is much worse inside.”
“Why’d you leave?” Sebastian asked.
I cocked my head and scrunched my mouth up, I raised up my middle finger to the building then kept walking down the street. I wasn’t ready to get into that yet.
Don’t people work anymore? I thought to myself as we entered the packed mall. It was a Thursday morning and seemed like every soul in Zuzu had taken a detour to the shops first.
“Where should we go first?” Abbie wiggled next to me.
“Skate park.”
“Electronics.”
Both boys spoke at the same time.
“There is this awesome cafe in here that sells the best cinnamon rolls, I’m just saying,” I pipped up after.
“Ohh, that sounds yummy!” Abbie beamed.
“Do they have coffee?” Sebastian asked.
“Yes, but at this point I think you should hook yourself up to an IV, just have coffee pumped into your blood veins,” I said.
“Is that a thing?” Sebastian questioned, his eye brows raising.
“If it is, I don’t think it is recommended,” I shrugged.
“I’d invest in that,” Sebastian sighed.
“We could find you one of those hats!” Sam said pointing to his head then pretended to grab two invisible cups on the side.
Abbie made a face. “Like the beer guzzler hat?”
“That!” Sam flapped his arms. “But instead of beer, we put coffee mugs in it!”
Sebastian stroked the stubble on his chin, pretending to be deep in thought. “I could be swayed into considering it.”
Finding the little hole in the wall cafe, we placed orders. I was declared to official Food Guide for the rest of the day by Sam. I accepted it with a sweeping bow and asked how everyone felt about Mexican food.
“This is the part I miss about the city,” I started. “I fucking love food. Don’t get me wrong, Gus is amazing, but damn I miss having so much cuisine at my finger tips.” I sighed and stuffed another bite of warm gooey cinnamon roll into my mouth.
“I’m going to miss these,” Sam sniffled and hugged his box to his chest.
“On Saturday morning and I was feeling really lazy, I’d just have Post Mates deliver them to my apartment,” I smiled at the memory. Wrapped in my favorite blanket, coffee brewing, a controller in my hand.
“Post Mates, what’s that?” Abbie asked.
“What?” I snapped out of my day dream.
“Post Mates, what is it?” Abbie repeated.
I blinked at her slowly then looked at both of the boys to see if it was a joke. Both of their faces remained in a blank stare. Holy shit. There is no Post Mates in the Valley. It made since, seeing as we were almost to the middle of no where. The hotel only had a few rooms and Gus lived in one of them!
“Post Mates is a delivery service,” I shrugged. “You place an order on the app and your Post Mate goes and gets it and brings it to you.”
The three exchanged looks, Sebastian dug his phone out of his pocket.
“You’re joking?” Sam asked.
I shook my head and took a drink of coffee.
Sebastian held up his phone, showing his friends the app.
“What the actual fuck?” Abbie snatched his phone and began scrolling. With a scowl and a huff Sebastian leaned back in his chair.
“I’m jealous and a bit confused,” Abbie admitted after several moments of silence.
“I’m just jealous!” Sam threw his arms up.
“Why wouldn’t you just go and get your own food?” Abbie asked.
“Lazy,” I shrugged then added. “Drunk.”
“That’s so awesome!” Sam’s forehead made contact with the table. Sebastian snatched his phone out of Abbie’s hand, she stuck her tongue out at him.
We finished our treats then continued about our day. We unleashed Sam upon the skate park. Stopped at a Hot Topic for Abbie, where she found purple finger less gloves that matched her hair.
The electronic shop took up both floors of the mall and we lost Sebastian for over an hour. We found him leaning against a table, talking to an employee, a short adorable girl with a pink pixie cut. I felt something in my chest squeeze and I ducked down an aisle, separating myself from the group.
I had spent so much of my life trying to escape this overwhelming city and when I’m finally able to, I come right back. Like a clingy girlfriend.
It’s just the day Kit.
What about the farm? Summer is just a few days away, there is still so much to do.
It will all be there tomorrow.
When did these shelves get so close together?
When did it become so loud in here?
Who turned the air off?
Sweat beaded on my forehead, I was gasping for air.
I started moving. I had traveled these walk ways a hundred times before and my feet carried me to the nearest exit and outside. I kept walking until I found an alcove and plopped myself down onto the ground. A car sped past, the engine roaring, another car this time speakers that were too loud. A slam of a door. People walked, unaware of my state, laughing, talking.
Breath.
It wasn’t enough and my hands started to shake, my fingers tingling.
Breath.
The numbness spread up my arms and into my lips.
Breath.
Sneakers pounding on pavement quickly approached me.
“Kit!” Abbie’s voice broke through the madness inside. Sam practically threw himself on the ground next to me, his arms wrapping around my torso. For the first time I noticed he smelled of sunshine and sand. Just like the beach, just like the Valley.
Sebastian knelt in front of me, his dark coffee eyes meeting my clover ones and rooting me back to the ground. “Are you okay?”
“Yeah, just a little sensory over load,” I sniffed, rubbing at my damp cheeks. When had I started crying? A frown tugged at his lips, Sam pulled me closer to him, crushing me to his side.
“Sam, I think you are killing her,” Abbie said.
“With my love!” Sam patted my head, it was more aggressive then comforting. Sebastian rolled his eyes and stood, reaching out his hand to me.
“Oh thanks bro,” Sam reached for it. Sebastian popped Sam’s hand away, I gave him my hand, but there was a long awkward moment where I was just holding his hand because Sam was still keeping me anchored to the ground.
“Dude, let go!” Abbie kicked Sam’s leg.
“Fine!” Sam let go and stood. Sebastian finally pulled me to my feet, he pulled me into a quick embrace before letting me go and giving me a once over.
Thunk-thunk.
Hush you.
I cleared my throat “Sorry for the scare, we may now all go back to whatever it was that we were doing.”
“I wasn’t done shopping,” Sebastian shoved his thumb back towards the electronics store.
“I don’t need anything from there. Want to go to the book store with me Kit?” Abbie asked.
Honestly, I didn’t.
I wanted to go look at the new builds. Look at getting new RAM for my pc and new RGB lighting. But I don’t think I could take seeing Sebastian and that girl together, so I agreed and followed Abbie. I found more than I thought I would. I found new models for Solorian Chronicles, the game Sam and Sebastian played every Saturday night. An adventure diary for Abbie. I found myself in front of the Lawn and Garden section, staring at a copy of ‘Farming for Dummies’. I frowned.
“Whatcha got there?” Abbie asked appearing from behind a shelf. I jumped and shook my head.
“Just stuff,” I shrugged. I looked at the stack of books in her arms. They were all adventure books, the main character female, I smiled to myself.
Abbie glanced at the shelf and frowned. “Don’t tell me you are getting that.”
I shrugged again.
“Kit, come on you are way better than that,” she scoffed.
“Abbie, I have no idea what I’m doing,” I sighed. “Thankfully Summer is coming up, which is the only season I know shit about, but damn.” For the first time I felt defeated. “Grandpa’s busiest season was summer and fall, but they were also his most profitable. That’s actually why I started going to Gaia Farm. Dad sent me there so I wouldn’t be a lazy ass all Summer and I could help grandpa out. Did I learn a lot, definitely. But I’m still flying blind here.”
Abbie’s face scrunched up, before taking one of her books and bopping me on the head with it.
“Ow!” I rubbed the spot she hit.
“Kit, I can honestly say I understand, I do,” she began. “Recently my dad has been giving me a lot more to do around the store. More responsibility, taking shifts by myself, showing me how to order. But if he were to die tomorrow I would have no idea what to do. I’d probably just burn the store down.” Her statement was very matter of fact. “I think you are just overwhelmed right now. Give it some time and Hurricane Kit will sweep through Gaia Farm and so much ass will have been kicked.” Abbie looked at the shelf and plucked a book off and added it to my pile ‘Farming for Beginners’.
“If our hands weren’t full, I’d hug you,” I sniffled.
“We will hug it out later.” Abbie laughed.
The guys were ecstatic about their gifts, it was a model castle, with a little village and a few characters that they were going to build and paint over the weekend. Abbie whispered “nerds” under her breath earning glares from both boys. We hung out at the mall for a little bit longer, then explored the town. I took them to my favorite Mexican restaurant, then showed them my old apartment. I pointed to the 3rd floor window that used to be mine. Sebastian stared at that window, a sense of longing in his eyes.
“I’m confused,” Abbie said from beside me.
“About?” I looked at her.
“Why is do you have fire escape if there are bars on the windows?” She asked with a laugh.
Sebastian frowned, his head cocked.
Behind us a large truck revved its engine, smoke poured from the exhaust and overwhelmed us. A horn honked. Tires squealed.
I waved my hand in front of my face to help clear away smoke. The others coughed loudly and tried to fan the smoke away. Once things settled I answered Abbie’s question. “So the bars on the window were installed after someone broke into a 5th story window and they installed the bars on for safety measures.”
My friends stared at me unblinking.
“What?”
“That dumb,” Sebastian blinked.
“I’m aware.”
The sun was setting and the street lights began blinking on, we headed back to the train station. The ride home was quite, both Abbie and Sam had fallen asleep the moment they sat down. Abbie’s head on his shoulder, his head resting atop hers.
“They are so cute when they aren’t talking,” I bumped my elbow against Sebastian’s.
“Yeah they are. I can almost tolerate them.”
I snickered. He began scrolling through his phone, his brows coming together.
“What’s up Bash?”
He hummed and kept scrolling. “I just got a new project to work on, so it’s going to be a late night.”
“Project?”
“Yeah for coding, it’s for a new medical software.”
I stared at him, one eye brow raised. “That’s impressive.”
Sebastian snorted and crossed his arms over his chest. “You are the only one who thinks so.”
He turned away from me and stared out the window. I sighed and leaned back in my seat, guess that conversation is over.
We sat like this for awhile, in silence, listening to the heavy breathing of our two sleeping friends.
“Thanks for yesterday,” Sebastian finally said.
“For what?” I turned to him.
“Helping me through the anxiety attack,” his voice was low, just above a whisper.
“Of course,” I shrugged. “I...”
My voice caught in my throat. I what? Care about you? Like you? Want to kiss your stupid face?
“I’m glad I could be there for you.”
Sebastian faced me, eyes exploring my face for a moment before turning back to the window.
『 @rotinthedark said, 』 "There are days when I want to run away, and forget everything.” ( alex! )
               It’s funny. They’re the last two people he thinks most would expect to have anything in common : probably least of all Sebastian himself, if he really considers it. But as Alex glances up at him from where he sits, legs crossed on the ground, he can’t help the brief feeling of melancholy that washes over him, causing his brows to furrow in a show of concern. Though whether it’s for himself or his neighbor, he can’t tell. Maybe it’s both. His thoughts drift to years ago, when he used to stand on the side of city bridges and think about what it’d feel like to hit the bottom. He’d never been suicidal, not truly, not even in the depths of his pain, but it hadn’t stopped him from wondering what it’d be like not to feel suffocated anymore. Just because he didn’t want to die doesn’t mean he hadn’t wanted to escape. Back then, it’d manifested in the form of fantasies of running away with his mother, saving her from where they were. After she was gone, he’d just wanted to find meaning for himself again. The bruises from his father healed, even if some of the scars remained. At some point he had to stop running from monsters that weren’t chasing him anymore, but it’d been easier said than done.
               He hasn’t had anxiety constricting his chest the way it used to when he was with his father in what seems like forever, but still, beside him, Dusty lazily pushes himself to his paws before promptly draping himself over his lap. There’s a resulting pressure on his abdomen from the position and it almost makes him laugh. Old emotional support trick, he thinks, and he wonders if Dusty is relieved he doesn’t have to get up at three in the morning to lay on top of some poor kid having panic attacks instead of sleeping. He thinks it’s a little too bad he’s the only one sitting down ... he’s sure he’d do the same for the other man, if he’d let him. Smart boy.
Tumblr media
               “That’s fair,”  he responds finally, one of his hands raising to rest on top of the dog’s head. If he scolded him for thinking that way, he’d be a hypocrite. There’s no way he knows everything that goes on in Sebastian’s life. From the outside looking in, he may seem like a strange person : but as egotistical as he plays himself up to be, beneath it all, he knows it must be a two-way street. No one is normal, everyone has their pain. In all honesty, he doesn’t know why he’s telling him this. Maybe he’d just been thinking aloud, but he doesn’t mind. It seems he’s the one who’s made a habit of accidentally invading this mountain spot, anyways.  “Sometimes running away is all you can do. Maybe it’s not what you should do and maybe it’s not forever, but sometimes, in the moment, maybe it’s for the best. Just for a while.”  To say otherwise would be ridiculous, not when he’d done exactly that, once he was able.  “I’ve done my fair share of running. Sometimes it was away from things. Other times it was straight for them.”
               Patting Dusty, he leans back, hands flat on the dirt path so that he doesn’t end up falling. He must look like an idiot  ——  disheveled from hiding up here playing fetch with his friend, but now he wants to sit around and pretend he has wise life advice to dish out. He’s in his twenties, sounding wise isn’t exactly in his cards, but if he has what experience he does with living, he supposes it can’t hurt to share it, every now and again.  “Forgetting wouldn’t do you any good, though,”  he mulls, turning his gaze away from Sebastian in order to look out at the world beyond this stupid hill. Big, crazy, loud, scary, wonderful. Lonely. It’s not as great as some people here think it is.  “Even painful memories are important. Whether you like who you are overall or not, those things shape pieces of you that you wouldn’t want to change. Small pieces. You may not even notice them.”  His nose scrunches in thought.  “Someone beats you up enough times, maybe you learn to start throwing punches. Or maybe you learn to stand tall in front of them so no one else has to get hit. There’s good in everything, you know? Every part of you. Why change that?”
               His way of thinking doesn’t exactly line up with most peoples’, at least not in this area. He’s an optimist, he knows that. Always looking for a silver lining, even when he’s dragging himself back from Zuzu with bloody noses and backpacking to fuck knows where trying to find himself. He briefly wonders, if given the chance to step foot out of this place, whether Sebastian would really be as depressing as he comes off. He’s never thought about it before, but maybe he feels smothered, too. Just another person locked up in a place they can’t escape, surrounded by people they don’t want to see every day. His eyes narrow at the sunset, but he doesn’t glance over at him and he doesn’t ask. It isn’t his place.
               “Look, dude, I know I sound like a greeting card, alright.”  Suddenly, he huffs and when he turns back towards him, his smile is back. He sits up straight, careful not to disturb Dusty, who he’s sure has fallen asleep, out like a light.  “My point is that, like, there’s  ...  a whole world out there. And you and I, we’re young! We have plenty of time. To explore, to heal, whatever. You don’t have to go running full speed at it, you don’t have to wipe your slate clean. Just start taking steps, right? I visit the city a lot just to have fun. You remember that, right? Fun?”  There’s a bit of a tease in there, but his eyes are shining : he’s trying to be encouraging.  “You like programming. They have super crazy tech labs in the public library now-a-days, did you know that? All this free software and stuff downloaded onto it that you can use whenever you want, ‘cuz it’s open twenty-four-seven. I have no clue what any of that tech stuff is, I just go to look at the books since it’s right by the gym, but why not try that every once in a while? You could even come with me some time if you’re scared of going to the big bad city.”  Laughing, he reaches up to brush his hair out of his face.  “You can’t run away unless you know what you’re running towards, Sebastian. ‘Cause forgetting things, it ... look, you know, it ... doesn’t really make you happy, it just kinda ... makes you lost. And I guess we aren’t really friends or anything, but ... I don’t know, the idea of you ending up like that ... it’s upsetting? You have a lot of potential. Joder, you’re leagues smarter than I’ll ever be. Don’t squander it over anything or anyone else! If you’re gonna take a leap of faith, whether it takes you where you want or screws up your life, at least do it for yourself, not 'cause something is pushing you away.”
Can I get male farmer/sebastian on a date? In somewhere nice, maybe in zuzu city? Love your works, thanks!
Thank you so much! I hope you like this little thing.
Sebastian wiped his sweaty palms on his jeans.
He hated being out. Where was the comfort of his dim, cozy basement? The glow of his computer screen burning his eyes in the dark, the glossy pages of his comic books between his fingers. He tried his best not to wear his pain on his face, but he was sure he was failing, could feel the frown twitching on his lips.
“Are you okay?” the farmer asked from across the table.
Sebastian’s gaze flicked up to meet his, between the candles and glittering glasses of wine. His cheeks burned.
“I’m sorry,” he muttered, his blush deepening. “I’m not used to all of this.” He gestured to the restaurant around them, where other diners clinked forks and knives against ceramic plates, made toasts with bubbling champagne. The chatter burrowed into Sebastian’s ears.
“Do you want to leave?” the farmer raised his eyebrow, noticing the pink flush spreading across the pale boy’s face. Sebastian’s eyes hid behind the dark curtain of his hair. He stood out like a sore, goth thumb, a smudge of black in the glimmering white and gold of the restaurant. The farmer closed his menu. “This was a bad idea.”
“No, no. It’s okay,” Sebastian said, his voice thin and unconvincing. “Let’s do this. I want you to have a good time.”
The farmer reached across the table and placed a steady hand on Sebastian’s. With serious eyes he said, “I want you to have a good time, too.”
They skipped the fancy dinner, walking out hand-in-hand, ignoring the leers from the other tables. Out on the street, beneath the towers of Zuzu City’s skyscrapers, the two hopped on the black and steel curve of Sebastian’s motorcycle. The farmer wrapped his arms around his waist, pressing his cheek against his leather jacket. The farmer could already feel Sebastian’s ease as he started the bike up, the engine growling to life.
They zipped through traffic, moving in and out of cones of headlights, streetlights. The sun was setting somewhere between the glassy buildings, the fiery rays refracting gold all over the city. The farmer looked up at the dimming sky, saw the first blink of stars and the inky strands of Sebastian’s hair whipping in the wind. He squeezed himself closer to Sebastian as he maneuvered expertly through traffic.
The bike slowed in front of a quiet sushi restaurant.
“You always find a way to sniff out sashimi,” the farmer laughed as they dismounted the bike.
Sebastian, standing in front of the restaurant and fixing his hair until it fell perfectly over his eyes again, offered a shy grin. “Sorry. Do you want to try some place else? I’m fucking up this date.”
The farmer fixed a stray strand of hair on Sebastian’s head and planted a tender kiss on his lips. “This is perfect.”
Sebastian felt hot beneath his jacket, beneath his skin. Looking into the farmer’s patient eyes, he felt okay. His heart might stop, but he’d be okay.
“Shall we?” the farmer asked, linking hands with him.
Sebastian nodded. He could stray from the dark depths of his basement, as long as the farmer was leading the way.
