Juno Birch is a multi-media artist and drag queen from Manchester, UK. She is a self-proclaimed “glamorous alien woman who crash landed on Earth in 1962″ and she is STUNNIN! When Juno isn’t camping around Manchester in a fabulous vintage outfit and wonderfully retro sunglasses, she is making vibrantly kooky hand-made sculptures to pay the rent, of course. When thinking about contemporary camp, Juno Birch holding a half-smoked cigarette between the fingers of her yellow rubber gloves was the first image that popped into my mind. Within Camp -- A Queer Sensibility, it is stated that Susan Sontag defined camp as “a love for the unnatural of artifice and exaggeration” (Camp -- A Queer Sensibility 70). Juno herself sites The Rocky Horror Picture Show as her main source of inspiration. Rocky Horror is the mere definition of camp, a camp staple if you will. Both Rocky Horror and Juno Birch represent and ooze an obvious adoration for the unnatural and supernatural. Juno Birch, who is a trans woman, is actively queering the infamous image of the 60s housewife. The images and art that she creates is inherently camp by acting as “a way of being human, witty, and vital, without conforming to the drabness and rigidity of the hetero male role” (“It’s Being So Camp As Keeps Us Going” 50).
