From Discovering the Secrets of the Universe to In-Space Servicing, We’ve Got The Tools for the Job

If you need to fix something on Earth, you could go to a store, buy the tools you need, and get started. In space, it’s not that easy.

Aside from the obvious challenges associated with space (like it being cold and there being no gravity), developing the right tools requires a great deal of creativity because every task is different, especially when the tools need to be designed from scratch. From the time an engineer dreams up the right tools to the time they are used in space, it can be quite a process.

On Nov. 15, astronauts Luca Parmitano and Drew Morgan began a series of spacewalks to repair an instrument called the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS-2) on the exterior of the International Space Station. The first of four spacewalk focused on using specialized tools to remove shields and covers, to gain access to the heart of AMS to perform the repairs, and install a new cooling system.

Once repaired, AMS will continue to help us understand more about the formation of the universe and search for evidence of dark matter and antimatter.

These spacewalks, or extravehicular activities (EVAs), are the most complex of their kind since the servicing of the Hubble Space Telescope. AMS is particularly challenging to repair not only because of the instrument’s complexity and sensitivity, but also because it was never designed to be fixed. Because of this design, it does not have the kinds of interfaces that make spacewalks easier, or the ability to be operated on with traditional multi-purpose tools. These operations are so complex, their design and planning has taken four years. Let’s take a look at how we got ready to repair AMS.

Thinking Outside of the (Tool) Box

When designing the tools, our engineers need to keep in mind various complications that would not come into play when fixing something on Earth. For example, if you put a screw down while you’re on Earth, gravity will keep it there — in space, you have to consistently make sure each part is secure or it will float away. You also have to add a pressurized space suit with limited dexterity to the equation, which further complicates the tool design.

In addition to regular space complications, the AMS instrument itself presents many challenges — with over 300,000 data channels, it was considered too complex to service and therefore was not designed to one day be repaired or updated if needed. Additionally, astronauts have never before cut and reconnected micro-fluid lines (4 millimeters wide, less than the width of the average pencil) during a spacewalk, which is necessary to repair AMS, so our engineers had to develop the tools for this big first.

With all of this necessary out-of-the-box thinking, who better to go to for help than the teams that worked on the most well-known repair missions — the Hubble servicing missions and the space station tool teams? Building on the legacy of these missions, some of our same engineers that developed tools for the Hubble servicing missions and space station maintenance got to work designing the necessary tools for the AMS repair, some reworked from Hubble, and some from scratch. In total, the teams from Goddard Space Flight Center’s Satellite Servicing Projects Division, Johnson Space Center, and AMS Project Office developed 21 tools for the mission.

Designing and Building

Like many great inventions, it all starts with a sketch. Engineers figure out what steps need to be taken to accomplish the task, and imagine the necessary tools to get the job done.

From there, engineers develop a computer-aided design (CAD) model, and get to building a prototype. Tools will then undergo multiple iterations and testing with the AMS repair team and astronauts to get the design just right, until eventually, they are finalized, ready to undergo vibration and thermal vacuum testing to make sure they can withstand the harsh conditions of launch and use in the space environment.

Practice Makes Perfect

One of the reasons the AMS spacewalks have been four years in the making is because the complexity of the repairs required the astronauts to take extra time to practice. Over many months, astronauts tasked with performing the spacewalks practiced the AMS repair procedures in numerous ways to make sure they were ready for action. They practiced in:

Astronauts use this testing to develop and practice procedures in space-like conditions, but also to figure out what works and doesn’t work, and what changes need to be made. A great example is a part of the repair that involves cutting and reconnecting fluid lines. When astronauts practiced cutting the fluid lines during testing here on Earth, they found it was difficult to identify which was the right one to cut based on sight alone.

The tubes on the AMS essentially look the same.

After discussing the concern with the team monitoring the EVAs, the engineers once again got to work to fix the problem.

And thus, the Tube Cutting Guide tool was born! Necessity is the mother of invention and the team could not have anticipated the astronauts would need such a tool until they actually began practicing. The Tube Cutting Guide provides alignment guides, fiducials and visual access to enable astronauts to differentiate between the tubes. After each of eight tubes is cut, a newly designed protective numbered cap is installed to cover the sharp tubing.

Off to Space

With the tools and repair procedures tested and ready to go, they launched to the International Space Station earlier this year. Now they’re in the middle of the main event -- Luca and Drew completed the first spacewalk last Friday, taking things apart to access the interior of the AMS instrument. Currently, there are three other spacewalks scheduled over the course of a month. The next spacewalk will happen on Nov. 22 and will put the Tube Cutting Guide to use when astronauts reconnect the tubes to a new cooling system.

With the ingenuity of our tool designers and engineers, and our astronauts' vigorous practice, AMS will be in good hands.

SO...I never meant to delay this for so long, I’m so sorry for this, but I’m excited to rejuvenate this page -- I’m quite bad with tumblr, but I just hit 350 followers and I figured I’d put in a second dime for trying to make this little account work. People seem to like my little writings (which surprises me tbh, but I appreciate the love) and I’ve gotten a lot of questions about requests, so here’s the masterpost of all that for here!

PLEASE NOTE: I don’t use Tumblr too regularly, I’m trying to be more active but because of life & stuff, I’m not always active to write. Plus, just because you request something, doesn’t mean I will automatically be able to give that! It takes time, inspiration, and often the ability to form a sentence, which weirdly I struggle with. Way too often.

WHO I WRITE FOR...most people look at this acc for tua writings, which i’ve got an abundance of! I’m quite fine with any requests of any characters, except for five (unless like it’s some aged up version of him; I don’t feel comfy writing about him and I just don’t care to). I also will write for a lot of other fandoms if you ask for them: those including marvel, stranger things (those of age, i’m not writing stories about minors), harry potter and a couple others. Just ask me, I’ll let you know if I write for the fandom & we can move from there, darling. :)

HOW TO REQUEST...I prefer not too many details in a request, just so I still feel inspired to write the piece. So, if you’re asking based on a prompt below, tell me the number(s), the character you’re looking for, and any details you feel necessary to add! Remember, nothing too specific, like don’t give me the entire plot but things like genre, atmosphere, details on the reader are okay. I usually write either genderless or female reader (I try to stick with the former to be accommodating) but you can ask for a specifically gender-neutral or female/male reader too. This also applies to fics you want garnered to a specific section of the LGBTQIA+ community (for example, if you wanted a lesbian reader with Vanya Hargreeves). I try not to add any details to appearance to the story so that everyone can enjoy the fic, but again you can ask for any specific and I will try my best to accomodate for you lovelies.

To the sound of the broadcast of the news you started on the next batch of dough. On top of a heat resistant set of wood blocks you laid over your counters you left the hot trays of bread to cool while you started to mix the next bowls worth. Gritty the mixture slowly turned to the supple dough you needed to the opening monologue breaking to, ‘And on our top story for the day the opening of Clustered Anchors in Erebor came with the weight of another stunning opening, that of the official claiming of Thorin Durin.’

Frerin came into the kitchen while Thorin changed Billi, smirking as you muttered, “Claiming,”

‘The eldest son of Thrain son of Thror attended the opening of the show as an official announcement of their status as a couple. From the cast to the few people they did come into contact with all said they were incredibly affectionate and spoke of plans afterwards. This morning we have received notice of the official statement the Durins have printed on their family website and no doubt official portraits will surely follow for the stunningly betrothed couple, yes betrothed, their portraits no doubt will be taken or available soon. Although the news of the status was far from surprising if you had taken notice of a certain piece of jewelry the young Durin was sporting.’

You rolled your eyes leaving the dough to rise in taking out one roll to cook another leaving the hot one to cool. “By the size alone they will be commenting on their suspicions of an engagement due to a proposal worthy stone from you.”

Softly you sighed out, “Technically we are engaged. Just shredding hairs.”

Frerin chuckled at Thorin’s entrance asking, “Who is shredding hairs? Sounds painful.” Letting out a gasping smile at Billi’s reach up to grab his braid in his beard to admire the bead securing the end of it before awkward tries to grab his mustache shifting his upper lip through his adoring stare at his niece.

Frerin chuckled out, “Your Mafioso here was commenting that your betrothal already constitutes engagement based on the news’ comments on your ring.”

Thorin hummed out, “Better to give them more announcements to wait on.”

The sound of brakes squeaking had Frerin checking the door and calling back, “Expecting a delivery?”

Thorin hurried to the door joining him, “Ooh, that would be the beds.” Easing Billi into the playpen on the way. Huffs and puffs sounded through your mixing up some muffin and brownie mix while chatting to the girl, the mix was added to your second oven with timer set to bring out after another loaf was ready to be finished off.

“And in related news, Wolsey is here!!” An excited squeal cane from the news anchors who delved more into the arrival of the second bout of stickers related to the Bunny Show. “The dynamic lovers are now a duo, our Countess can now be displayed with her cumbersome Prince Charming. Last month the Countess stickers were the first glimpse into the world of his addictive show and everyone was boots over beard for the impossible stunner selling out in a matter of hours, creating a backlist of orders that is still holding and gradually shipping copies to loves of our Grand Lady of Mischief. And now we get to see the fella who had her begrudgingly offered attentions focused on him for so long until the stars aligned and courtship ensued. I am not alone in shrieking once we got a good glimpse of the golden haired Dwarf.”

Frerin with a grin came back into view eyeing Billi now nodding off in her pop up crib you were keeping an eye on as you bustled around prepping your treats and odd bowl of lemons you had gathered from the greenhouse the day before. “Making brownies now? And muffins?”

“Nice to get it all done at once.”

Two trays of muffins were eased into the one to the sound of the door again turning Thorin with a curious furrow of his brows. “Jaqi, they need you to sign.”

Out you came and smiled accepting the pad and stylus from the Elf who said, “Three packages for you today Miss Pear.”

“Three,” You muttered to yourself glancing at the duo in the back of the shipping van who unloaded a wooden carrier for a painting followed by a trunk they carefully moved into the front hall with a medium sized box on top. The trio nodded heir heads wishing you all a good day and turned back to their van as Frerin closed the door to Thorin returning with a box cutter he passed to you.

Starting with the box you gasped at the beyond fluffy fake panda fur blanket you giggled folding back up to our back into the box for later as you eyed the envelope that was on top of it in Frerin’s hand. At your approval he opened it and showed you the simple note reading simply ‘Welcome Home’ signed clearly by Thranduil, Amrod and Amras. With the note was the key to the painting case and the trunk locks the brothers unlocked to find a stunning decorative vase you agreed to move to the living room and a medium sized painting of a scenic landscape with playing sheep you smiled and took to lean against the wall of the living room bare of decorations where the image could be hung high enough the be viewed properly. Most the other rooms curved on the walls bare enough for the painting that size and with a smirk at your pleased expression of the gift Thorin hummed, “I’ll break out the stud finder to hang it tomorrow for you.”

“Thank you,” You said and turned to hurry back to answer another timer for one of your treats in the kitchen as trunk and case were taken to the garage and the blanket to your room to be draped over your bed later. Back he went to your side to hear with Frerin more about the brothers who had gifted you the decorations and their significance. Though their hand made declaration had them all the more grateful and understanding of their importance to you. Priceless gifts from equally as talented friends who always hoped to help you decorate your well deserved home one day. The doorbell however at the timer for the brownies pulled him away again with a scowl and grumbled argument against being pulled away at his try to inch closer to steal a kiss on your cheek.

“Twelve pounds a piece! Dam and Dwarrow!” Dwalin exclaimed loud enough past Thorin’s shoulder letting you know while you stored the last of your bread, muffins and brownies. Into the entrance hall he came pausing at the large box left by the door asking as Bilbo and Frodo hurried in towards the incredible smells coming from the kitchen. “What’s with the box cousin?”

Thorin said, “Ah, that’s one of the bed kits for the orange and white room.”

Dwalin asked, “Here?”

Thorin nodded, “We’d need room to build in there. Not much give if we packed them all in. Two are stacked as the other is off by itself.”

Dwalin looked from his cousin to the box making Thorin grin knowing he was feeling the same urge to build it as he and Frerin had upon passing the kit that just drew the eye in the mostly assembled home.

Bilbo grinned seeing the bread tucked into the tiered bread boxes then shifted his eyes to the lemon slices coated in honey and sugar lying in a clear pan. “Are those lemons?”

“Yes, do you need lemons, my tree is just exploding with them.”

“Don’t use them often, however, what are you making with this?”

“I have some lime left too that I’m letting cool in the fridge freshly crushed that I will layer with cherry drizzle and peach peels.” His eyes narrowed and you grinned saying, “You add them to little cucumber crackers, have to freeze it first, it’s like an ice cream brittle.”

Frerin’s eyes narrowed asking, “Who taught you that?”

“I assume it’s an Elf thing if you haven’t heard of it. Cirdan’s Naneth taught me.”

Thorin entered the room with a grin coming to bring out the lime he helped you to layer with the peach peels in the other bowl you then added to the freezer. His relative’s curious glances had him saying, “It will be lovely, now, Mafioso, since we are greater in number and require distraction how about we crack open one of those bed kits? Hmm?”

Kili walked in grinning as Fili asked, “What are we building?” Gladly making room for Mal between them who grinned at you.

“Alright, since you outnumber me.” That was your reply and leading the way you found the toolbox beside the first kit Thorin grinned brightly at you having been caught at his obvious wish to sneak time to break this kit open anyways with or without you. “Oh,” the kit was unpacked with all supplies organized by lettered sticker and size, certain to leave brackets and the screws and nails in their lettered bags inside the ring of wood for easier access.

“Oh?” The others parroted back and you glanced up, “It’s in Avari...” looking up at the doorway you asked Roac from his dangle in the doorway arch asking, “Could you ask Kuu here? He knows Avari better than I do.” Sighing as you recounted the countless nature shows he absorbed in the language you had been trying to learn to share that time with him.

The Dwarves couldn’t help but grin at the thought of being led in this project by a great owl but smiled openly at his eager perch off to the side grinning at the booklet propped up so you could see the pictures and he could read the words. Tangled in holds to keep the halfway assembled platform frame backs began to clench and limbs tremble as he read, “Firmly lodge squirrel into each corner faucet.”

Heads turned to the bird as you said, “I am fairly certain that rune is not squirrel. I promise you it’s not.”

“No, it says clearly, squirrel and faucet, the latter however I am doubting. Hmm.” With feathers fluffing up his body turned with head straightening up from its sideways bend in a trot to the door. “I will fetch my translation guide.”

Once clear of the door the others chuckled at your mutter of, “It’s not squirrel...” Resting your forehead on the wood plank you were holding up. On Fili’s right as he kept his corner steady for Kili to add whatever the non squirrel part into the non faucet part to latch all four panels together to form a sturdy base the middle panels would be screwed into separating the cubbies for storage underneath the bed to go with the smaller ones around the edges of the cushioned headboards.

“It is not squirrel,” he replied once open translation dictionary was laid out beside the booklet and you rolled your eyes to yourself out of his view hearing him flip the page to double check faucet as well before the project could carry on. “Secure the screw into the locked brackets.”

Glancing at the bird you heard Kili ask, “Which screw? There’s twelve types.”

Kuu grinned with head tilted over the booklet and read the letters off for which end of the bed they were going in. Chuckles were muffled from those around you and the project continued. Until with a deep sigh all heads turned to the next kit as Kuu excitedly moved his things on top of the completed bed to be out of the way for the next tricky kit. Having ended the first where more than a few of you had been pinched or bitten by one piece or another with more than enough bruises to spare and Thorin with two fingers taped together in what would begin to be a trend among the group.

Home and ready to greet their clan the twins to Balin and his wife’s the whole clan was gathered. Your group being last after having finished off the final fourth bed now marked off your list just waiting for the mattresses and to be made. Not far away the walk didn’t take long and with presents in hand Thorin led the way proud to have your braid, his ring and the first couple gift from the pair of you to go with the treats you had brought. All eagerly claimed at the door with Thorin first to be lured over to his cousins’ youngest their elder sister smiled and waved to. You however smiled speaking to Gorgo in her elated sharing of news on a cousin of theirs, “All us expecting have gotten extra testing and one of her cousins has the same condition they found and she is having a precautionary c-section as well in a week, very near to the end of her term as well.”

“Oh-,”

Her hand claimed yours through her smile, “Now we know, it’s a genetic condition that in a few months a small procedure can correct to prevent this again, they have a blood test for it and without pregnancy it is easier to treat for those who do have it from her line. Doctors don’t normally test for it that is how it was missed all this time in their clan. Please don’t worry, a big fuss won’t be made, but when you are ready for pebbles of your own we will all hope to be as supportive as you have been to us, one Amad to another.”

Dis by her side smiled seeing Thorin halfway pouting after his turn in greeting the non giggling duo and moved to speak with their parents stealing a glance back to you sharing the details on the ring the couple had spotted. Nodding her head she said, “Your turn, if they don’t giggle the couple chooses by default.”

Across the room you went to the bassinet holding the contently grunting twins whose eyes came to focus on you as you came to stand over them, “Well look at you two. Clever little Lark and a coy little Fox.” Fast and shrill the pair shrieked out in unison for the start of a trio of giggles at your hand lowering to tap the soles of their raised feet with toes wiggling. Both boy and girl fully expecting the attention to them as everyone else had given the customary swipe of fingers along the bottom of their feet in the Hobbitish welcome.

All around you however smiles spread at the highly acceptable choice of their godmother with a slightly confused Frerin behind you who was chosen as godfather at the next set of silence splitting giggles while you moved to Thorin’s side. The elder brother however chuckled easing his arm around your back leaning in to press a gentle kiss to your forehead and grin at his younger brother saying, “Bout time you gained a giggle.”

Balin chuckled as his wife said to you, “The pair of you will suit out twins nicely. How did you guess their animal guides?”

“Feeling, bit like a dream,”

That made her grin spread, “Your Hobbit is showing,” making you grin to yourself.

Balin however said, “Fine gift you made my cousin.”

“Thank you, call me selfish but I’d have hated for Thorin to lose himself, me and his bond with all of you.”

That had Balin and his wife looking to Thorin who flashed a grin saying, “Ones betrothed to Vanyar trade gifts or the Blue Moon makes them lose themselves, their Ones and to their kin. Like our Donkey Days.”

That had you grin sheepishly, “Though ours tend to be more foreboding.”

Thorin, “It’s to honor Varda sparing a pair of lovers set apart by distance who risk meeting under the Blue Moon sleeping in the forest holding hands under a sheet of woven clover, it’s a beautiful story.” He said peering at you sweetly a moment then to his smiling cousins again.

Balin, “Very beautiful. Though Gran nearly had a heart palpitation seeing that ring.”

“I know it’s big, it has to be a size proportionate to my wealth. And I had the emerald and galvorn and ithildin in my trunks.”

Balin’s wife chuckled, “They are lovely choices.”

“Well if you need any gems I got some.” Making her chuckle again with Balin.

At least until she opened the gifts and let out soft gasps at the blankets decorated with foxes and larks with a fox and lark stuffie to go with each perfect for each of them she hugged you both in thanks. Gifts they were tucked in with at their naptime, which came fairly soon at their yawn that rippled through the household ushering everyone out with respectful nods nice and quiet to not disturb the duo with Frerin gladly taking up Billi accepting another night in charge of his niece to let the babies still get adjusted to being home. Mal and the boys under Dwalin and Bilbo’s watch were off to a film on an impromptu date night under supervision to a cgi kid friendly film they and Frodo had been waiting to see easing its approval by all.

Beside you however Gorgo stole a chance to sneak a few pictures of the carrier you had made for your first draft having already taken pictures of the leather bindings you had done for the movements as a set. “We just want to be sure to honor the full setup you have to be true to the series. Are your other drafts bound similarly?”

“Second and third, yes. Haven’t gotten to the etchings yet, I usually wait until then to bind them. But I had an idea for the spines especially that they would form a picture after the first novel.”

Gorgo, “I think that’s a wonderful idea.”

“Though there are a few symbols pertaining to Durin I’d need clearance on first to be certain they are fine.”

Thorin beside you said, “Of course we would love to approve them. There aren’t many that would be restricted from use pertaining to Durin for the public.”

“Not truly for restricted reasons, more like a spell check of sorts on his runes I used for one of his titles.” Making Thorin chuckle, “There’s one title I keep inversing and I can’t seem to keep it straight in my head when writing it as you read it out of order.”

Gorgo grumbled, “That one-,”

And Thorin chuckled out, “Each Dwarf Father has their own jumbled title, others get those mixed all the time.”

“Well I know I got it right in the book, just, on it.”

Gorgo grinned, “We will gladly check any of those issues for you that you might feel timid on.”

“There is one when I was writing it none of the Dwarves got on Ruun, it’s a pun but obviously it went over their heads.”

Thorin, “In Khuzdul?” You nodded and he said, “Yes, Khuzdul has rules on puns.”

“Well I’m not taking it out,” making him chuckle again, “Part of the point it’s in there, Bunny tells it to Durin and it flies over his head and he gets into this huge argument over the logic of it until the Countess gestures it was a pun then he stops laughs then silence.”

Gorgo giggled out, “Oh that is painful, please tell me that is close to the courting.”

“It’s actually closer to the fifth try for him to propose.”

Thorin whispered, “Fifth-,” smoothing his fingers over his mouth.

Gorgo however asked, “Does he succeed?”

“No, there’s an emergency he gets called away.” Making them both groan until you said, “But I can say he doesn’t see her apparent proposal coming.”

Thorin, “Ok, I’ll bite, how so?”

“She tackles him from off the top of a cupboard.” Caught in his throat his chuckles began to Gorgo’s loud laugh just imagining how relieved the First Woken Dwarf would feel after a proposal of that caliber after so much struggle. “Though she doesn’t really understand what she did.”

Thorin chuckled out, “Oh I don’t question that a moment.”

His fingers wiping around his eye made you smirk and say, “I think you guys will like it regardless of the struggle.”

Gorgo nodded then asked in a moment of stoic resolve, “If this is, Bunny, meant to be his final wife in his last two lives, how will that come into the story?”

“That, um, that you might not like. Bunny has her fea stolen and he has to travel to the Halls of Mandos to find her.” Dropping their grins, “It gets, a bit dark, but there’s some meaning behind it.”

Thorin, “How did you think of that?” He asked making your eyes narrow as if you had found some semblance of truth to that fact.

Shrugging your shoulders you said, “There was a Kurdu fable with a sort of similar notion to it. Should I change it?”

The both of them said, “No!”

And Thorin cleared his throat to say, “One of Durin’s journeys, that fable, it talks about his child, though the notion is similar, a test of faith and bonds. That one fable has never been touched on in any adaptation of his lifetimes,”

“Oh,” you said softly.

Gorgo said, “This tale, from what you’ve shared of Durin so far he needs this test. This is one of the truest versions to his being that we’ve come across, that is why people love it. We have to see him at his highest in this imagined flying shark craft of yours to the lowest when he is scouring for the lost soul of the one he cherishes most.”

“No pressure there then,” you murmured and he took your hands.

“No one else has the words, has ever been able to grasp who he was to the core and show that to those who don’t understand our culture and traditions and still get the point across. It doesn’t need to be accurate but the very essence of the Father of the Longbeard Clan is that he would sacrifice all to scour the Halls of Mandos to retrieve his cherished one. He needs that struggle or he is hollow, that drive and urge that we all feel for our Ones. That message is so hard to convey to non-Dwarves so it is often skipped over for more lighthearted topics. We are steadfast, hewn from the living stone, we never falter, he never did. And he prevailed and Mahal sent them back home once his fight was through.”

“Well Mahal’s not in it, it does involve him throwing his crown at a kraken though.” Making Thorin’s grin split wider in his try not to laugh at how you would drag the devastated King to that possible try to uplift the depressing slump to the tale. “There’s a lot of symbolism, and a lot to sort of let your mind interpret on its own. And there’s sort of an unspoken uncertainty how they get back, but they are.”

Gorgo, “Which would be accurate, because Mandos has to protect the paths back from his halls.” She smirked asking, “Mandos doesn’t send them back?”

You shook your head, “They hatch out of fake giant eggs giant eagles fly off with from a fire.” Making Thorin turn to rub his face with shoulders shaking to keep from laughing, “I don’t try to make it a comedy or funny at all but my friends have read it and they always laugh because, I guess it’s just a release?”

Thorin, “It will be more than worth it.”

“Oh, how does your clan see using a beard as a weapon?” That had their brows inch up, “See when he finds her his beard has grown like two feet and he braids it in two and ends them with metal balls and he sort of spins them around and uses them as weapons of sorts to hit people in the face.”

“Oh that is brilliant,” Thorin muttered under his breath.

Gorgo, “Where were you growing up? That would have been awesome to have on one of our programs! Every pebble would want to dress up as them on our mask day.”

“So not offensive?”

“No!” they both said.

Thorin chuckled out, “We’ve even had clans hide little compartments in their beards for snacks or notes or even spare trinkets and gold. It all depends on the Dwarf. And that sounds so bad ass for Durin.”

“Okay, then in the future be prepared to have me ask about a legal pad worth of questions on this stuff.”

Gorgo, “We will answer anything you need.” She said finishing her task to photograph the carrier with and without the three movements inside then at the chiming of her phone she was off to head home with Gloin at his having finished helping to settle Billi in at Frerin’s for the evening. Leaving just you and Thorin who helped you delve into more fables that were also centered or based on Durin in hopes of granting you more to draw from if need be.

Soup and grilled cheese was your send off for an early dinner that once settled on the table Thorin hummed out, “My family loved the ring, and seeing my braid in your hair.” He paused a moment then said, “I forgot to put my sheets in the dryer.”

That had you giggle and teased, “You know, the barrel method is fool proof against that.”

He smirked and excused himself to shift the sheets then return, lingering at your side as you peered up at him to cup your cheek and lean in to plant his lips on yours in a warm lingering kiss. Softly his thumb trailed against your cheek as his eyes met yours again, only for a moment though before his theft of a second brief press of his lips to yours. Almost regrettably he lowered his hand to sit back in his former place keeping his eyes on yours making you ask, “Why are you looking at me like that?”

“I’m thinking of how to ask if I could sleep in yours tonight.” That made you smirk and he rumbled lowly, “And I am conceding I would not have missed this step with a barrel method. It has its plusses.”

That had you giggling softly, “There’s always a spot in mine for cuddling if you need it, tons of blankets too.”

“Thank you, for conceding on the mattresses and bed frames. How is Kuu handling the busy day?”

“Good, really glad to have helped. Rarely gets to practice Avari. He loved it, being part of a team actually. Do you think mint would be okay for the portrait?”

“To wear? You would look lovely in mint for it.”

“I figured it would either be that or my yellow dress, but I was going to wear my hair down and it might clash.”

“Wear whatever color you choose.”

The ladies mentioned I might not wear the navy.”

“No, they would suggest against that, did not go well for Amad choosing against her clan colors, at least until they heard her Gran made the dress for her before she passed. Choose what color you wish.”

“Well I would wear the silver one I got but I think it might be a bit too, flashy. Or should I go flashy?”

“Choose the mint. I have a mint tie, to go with my navy suit.” He hummed out making you grin again, “The bright colors will pop against our flock, what do you think about in the greenhouse for that picture? So Darling won’t have to leave her nest?”

“If you like, I’m not very good at all this. I think Naneth would like one of us in the greenhouse, Cirdan mentioned maybe the fireplace in the living room. Some of the portraits in the atrium are personal so not there.”

“I understand that, I noticed her signature on a few of them, and that piano alone, can’t photograph that.” Your eyes hovered over his and he said, “Bad omens to photograph singing stone instruments in the house outside of family photo albums, and never when not played. If there’s anything you have rules like that on let me know. Amad most likely will want the typical armchair or couch pictures everyone does with one of our flock for a more personal one to share of our little household.” Making you giggle at his own chuckle, “Respectfully excluding the back yard of course.”

“Yes, Hector is not fond of pictures, and his mate might eat one of the strangers,” making him chuckle again. “They are warming up to us though, and babies, they liked having Frodo and Billi here.”

“Twins will be over soon enough for them to fawn over, we are on the sitting list as you remember, top of it thanks to those giggles.”

“So soft,” he heard you sigh through the hall while readying for bed. His smile cemented in place from the time he entered the room eyeing you nestling under the new fake panda fur blanket lying across the bed claiming your spot right in the middle of the monster of a bed leaving plenty for him to join you in. Though right where he wanted was cuddled up to you and adamantly secured his own soft spot in a clear relent to being your pillow as well only pleasing him all the more knowing he’d wake with you across his chest again.

THEATRE:HOME - 2:150 (thanks pandemic)

I usually separate out docs and fiction, but I watched almost no documentaries this year (with the exception of Dick Johnston). Reality is real enough.

TV Series

01 - BoJack Horseman (final season) - Pretty damned poignant finish to the show, replete with actual consequences for our reformed bad boy protagonist (which is more than you can say for most antiheroes of Peak TV).

02 - *Hello Ladies - I enjoy the pure awkwardness of seeing Stephen Merchant try to perform being a Regular Person, but ultimately this show tips him too far towards a nasty, Ricky Gervais-lite sort of persona. Perhaps he was always best as a cameo appearance, or lip synching with wild eyes while Chrissy Teigen giggles?

03 - Olive Kittredge - a rough watch by times. I read the book as well, later in the year. Frances Mcdormand was the best, possibly the only, casting option for the flinty lead. One episode tips into thriller territory, which is a shock.

04 - *The Wire S3, S4, S5 - lockdown culture! It was interesting to rewatch this, then a few months later go through an enormous, culture-level reappraisal of cop-centred narratives.

05 - Forever - a Maya Rudolph/Fred Armisen joint that coasts on the charm of its leads. The premise is OK, but I wasn’t left wanting any more at the end.

06 - *Catastrophe - a rewatch when my partner decided he wanted to see it, too!

07 - Red Oak - resolutely “OK” steaming dramedy, relied heavily on some pretty obvious cues to get across its 1980s setting.

08 - Little Fires Everywhere - gulped this one down while in 14-day isolation, delicious! Every 90s suburban mom had that SUV, but not all of them had the requisite **secrets**

09 - The Great - fun historical comedy/drama! Costumes: lush. Actors: amusing. Race-blind casting: refreshing!

10 - The Crown S4 - this is the season everyone lost their everloving shit for, since it’s finally recent enough history that a fair chunk of the viewing audience is liable to recall it happening.

11 - Ted Lasso - we resisted this one for a while (thought I did enjoy the ad campaign for NBC sports (!!) that it was based on). My view is that its best point was the comfort that the men on the show have (or develop, throughout the season) with the acknowledgement and sharing of their own feelings. Masculinity redux.

12 - Moonbase 8 - Goodnatured in a way that makes you certain they will be crushed.

13 - The Good Lord Bird - Ethan Hawke is really aging into the character actor we always hoped he would be!

14 - Hollywood - frothy wish-fulfillment alternate history. I think the show would have been improved immeasurably by skipping the final episode.

0 MEANS USING THE WEB AS A PLATFORM DIDN'T LIVE MUCH PAST THE FIRST CONFERENCE

This phrase began with musicians, who perform at night. Most are service businesses—restaurants, barbershops, plumbers, and so on. 0 conference would presumably be full of geeks, right? "Which of you alerted hospital staff to Lance Kingman’s condition?”

The officer steps into the room and Vivi spots a second man behind him. Lewis stands to greet them, and Vivi lets him take the lead. Conversation washes over her, buzzing like an annoying fly in the background. With all the new information being dropped into her lap, she is finding it difficult to think clearly.

‘Just because it’s weird, doesn’t mean we should discount it.’ How many times had she said that? A lot apparently, if Lewis is quoting it. But how does one fit all the weird things together into something coherent?

She loosely remembers Lewis and Arthur talking about an almost violent encounter with some leather-wearing wacko, but that had occurred at least a week before Arthur’s odd behaviour began. If the man was threatening Arthur for whatever reason, surely she would have seen some signs earlier instead of a steamily overnight change.

Why even mention ‘demon possession’ if that were the case. It didn't exactly add to the mysterious stranger's credibility in the 'find Arthur' department.

What did any of this even mean?

Vivi's not on Lewis's level when it came to reading and sympathising with people, but she is good at connecting actions to motivation. Nothing happened in a vacuum, there was always a cause and effect. There had to be some critical fact missing because, while some things fit together, others were completely random. Vivi exhales loudly, shifting her focus back onto Lewis. All she is doing is going over the same data points and hitting the same inconstancies. Futile.

“I’m a friend of his nephew, Arthur Kingsman. We heard Lance was in the hospital and came to offer support. It took us several hours to get here though,” Lewis is speaking, sounding confident and self-assured. He is talking in his ‘I'm dealing with people I don’t want to deal with, but I’m still going to be friendly’ voice. Unlike her and Arthur, Lewis is usually happy to interact with strangers, so she doesn’t hear this voice often.

“…We drove from Oak Ridge.”

Vivi, from her seated position, examines the two policemen more thoroughly. They don’t seem overly worried about her and Lewis, asking questions in a professional, concise manner. She has missed the introductions, so she doesn’t know either of their names.

“That’s pretty far off. Do you live there?”

“No. We were on a road trip. Arthur, he was with us, but he came back a few hours ahead.”

“Hmm. Have you see Arthur since then?”

“No,” A note of exhaustion is now creeping into Lewis’s tone like he has answered this question already.

“And you came straight to the hospital after arriving in Milton.”

“Yes."

There is a nod like the officer has just confirmed something important and Vivi realises that, if Lance had been attacked again -the officers hadn’t exactly confirmed anything yet- then Arthur is looking mighty suspicious. Arthur would never hurt his Uncle. But these guys didn’t know that. Statistically, these sort of things are usually a result of inter-family conflict.

“I met a weird guy in the car park who was looking for Arthur,” She pipes up, going with her ‘I’m just a dumb kid, what do I know’ voice, “Does that help?”

She has no problem throwing the mysterious stranger under the bus. Especially if the running theory, that the man is threatening Arthur, is true.

“We are not discounting anything. Which car park was this Miss Yukino?”

“It’s Vivi.” Lewis must have introduced her already. “It was the car park near the open mall. He had dark hair, a beard, wore a leather vest and had a bunch of bandages over his side like he’d been in a fight.”

The second man writes something down in his phone, frowning. There. Hopefully, that would throw their attention off Arthur and, to a lesser extent, her and Lewis. On top of everything, Vivi doesn’t want Arthur becoming a suspect in an attack on his own Uncle.

“Oh right!” She says brightly, standing, “Here.” She hands over the business card with the number. She has two of them, so it wasn’t like she was going to miss it.

“He gave me this. Maybe it'll help.”

Perplexed, the officer takes the card.

“So is Uncle Lance okay? What exactly happened? The hospital hasn’t told us much.”

“We’re really worried,” Lewis tacks on, from where he’s been watching Vivi’s attempts to subtly throw attention off Arthur.

At this, the second officer, the one who had been quiet up until now, steps forward. When he speaks his voice is warmer, accented in a way she can’t place, and not quite so coolly professional.

“Unfortunately, with the ongoing investigation, the hospital isn’t releasing any information on Lance Kingsman. We’ll look into this strange man …so there’s no need to worry.”

“But…”

“It’s late, and Hospital visiting hours are ending. You said you drove from Oaks Ridge? That’s a long drive, so the two of you should head home and get some rest." Lewis makes to interject, but the officer puts a reassuring hand on his shoulder, cutting him off.

"Nothing is going to happen between now and tomorrow. You are better off waiting in a more comfortable environment and coming back. Besides, you’re friend, Arthur, if he hasn’t been through here already, is more likely to turn up somewhere familiar. If you see him at all, tell him to get in contact. He’s not in trouble or anything, but we’d like to ask some questions.”

Vivi crosses her arms and has to clamp her jaw shut to prevent herself from saying something rude. That would just get them into trouble. She lets Lewis handle the rest of the interaction, watching, disgruntled, as Lewis relays their addresses and phone numbers in case they are needed for follow-up questions.

“Tempo? I have a sister up there. A cute town that one,” The second officer comments, apparently surprised.

“It’s cosy…” Lewis shrugs loosely, prompting, “How long has she been in Tempo for?”

Yeah. If by ‘cosy’ Lewis meant suffocating, then sure.

“…Last five years. Here,” A photo is pulled from the man’s wallet. “See. That’s my Niece. Cute an’t’ she”

Lewis nods along, scanning the photo, commenting thoughtfully, “Her name wouldn’t be Sarah Arias? I think I’ve seen them in the diner a few times…It’s a small town.”

“Haha. That wouldn’t happen to be the big purple building? She loves purple, so it’s the only one they go to.”

“Yeah, my parents own it.”

“That place has some crazy spicy food. Hey, Anderson… Maybe you should go there sometime.”

Vivi notes that ‘Anderson,’ has pretty much checked out of the conversation, focused on writing notes.

“Call me Michael by the way. Here, hold on. This is the department number and here is my extension,” He rips out a page, writing as he goes, “I work for Downtown Milton. Ask for me if you have any trouble, or your friend shows up. We’ll get this sorted, no problems. Anderson here is from the big city so he’s dealt with all sorts and cases.”

After more empty reassurances, promising that Lance was ‘probably going to be okay’ and ‘this hospital is one of the best in the state,’ they are escorted by Michael to the hospital’s main door. Most of the people in the foyer are gone, leaving it deserted. Two other officers are standing off to the side, attempting to be discrete. So that excluded sneaking back in and interrogating hospital staff. Not that she thought it would do them much good.

Her and Lewis step back through the hospital’s entrance. Michael disappears, returning to his partner. It is telling when Lewis immediately slumps, sighing loudly.

“Here,” Lewis hands her the number, rubbing his face. She doesn’t know what to do with it, but she slips it into her purse anyway. They share a long tired look. Exhaustion is mirrored across both of their faces. Now what?

She is tired. Lewis is tired. They've been up since six, and it has been nonstop emotional curveballs since. That, coupled with eight hours of continuous driving, is probably contributing to the sudden wave of helpless defeat weighing on her chest. Now there is no obvious goal to work towards, she is at a loss.

The sky is quickly darkening, and it’s a hundred times windier than when she entered the hospital. Vivi’s hair blows about every which way, getting into her eyes and mouth. Lewis doesn't fare much better. Whereas usually, this would be a prime opportunity for some light teasing, right now, defeat is killing any amusement to be had. All she has is questions. No answers. No idea where Arthur is or whether Uncle Lance will be okay. All this effort and nothing to show for it.

"That doesn't look good," Lewis interrupts their moment of silent commiseration, nodding to the clouds which are blocking out the remaining sun, hastening nightfall.

"I dunno...always nice to have some mood lighting," She grouches. Shitty weather to reflect their shitty situation. They trudge back to the truck, huddling together, Vivi using Lewis's lager form as a windbreak.

"I can drop you at your place on the way to mine? If you want. I’ll pick you up in the morning. We can be back at the hospital first thing," Lewis offers, voice almost too quiet to hear over the wind.

"No.” She says it bluntly, too tied to beat around the social bush, “I’m staying with you."

Her and Lewis are sticking together until all this, whatever it was, is over. Despite her mental and physical fatigue, she knows there isn’t going to be a lot of sleeping going on. Not with so much stuff crowding her mind. Better to use that time planning and theorising with Lewis. Maybe, she can also think up some new goal to pursue.

"Okay," Lewis nods, giving the smallest of smiles and Vivi punches him affectionately on the shoulder. He has no right looking that relieved.

The truck is easily spotted in the quickly emptying parking lot. Mystery is still in the cab, paws on the window, attention glued to them as they approach. He doesn't do his usual happy-dog-reunion-routine when Vivi lets him out, instead sniffing at her legs in an almost urgent manner.

"I need to call mama and let her know we're coming home. Would you drive?" Lewis draws her attention away from Mystery. She motions with an ‘up’ gesture and the dog leaps into her arms in a practised action. She runs a hand through his fur in a calming motion.

"Yeah. I'm fine with that. Is there going to be room for me to…”

“You know there’s always space for you at my place,” Lewis anticipates her question, “Besides, it has barely been 24 hours since we left, so the mattress you slept on is probably still set up.”

The mention of time sours both their expressions. Hard to think that all this drama has occurred within 24 hours.

Vivi makes her way around to the driver’s seat, preparing for another bumpy ride as she re-familiarises herself with the truck. Mystery squashes himself between them and spends a long moment staring intently at her profile. It's kind of weird. When Lewis takes out his phone, she is distracted, dividing her attention between eavesdropping on his call and the road. It becomes significantly harder when Lewis transitions to Spanish because her understanding of it is rudimentary at best. Still, she can make a few assumptions based on his tone, like how he answers with an almost fake-sounding happy voice then transitions to somewhat exasperated, meaning he is probably talking to one of his sisters. A shift to a more tired and exhausted sound means he’s talking to his mom.

Vivi is so focused on Lewis that she almost rams straight into a motorbike when it pulls unexpectantly out in front of her.

“Shit,” She swears and swerves to avoid the suicidal idiot. Mystery is knocked over and almost off the seat entirely.

Quickly, Vivi winds down the window, shouting at the disappearing figure, “HEY! WHY DON’T YOU LEAN TO DRIVE!” The motorbike’s engine revs as if in response. Behind her, a car sounds its horn.

“HEY…” Before she can start yelling at the car as well, Lewis’s calmer voice intrudes.

“No. I’m okay. It’s Vivi. She’s road raging.”

She turns to glare, “I am not road raging. That looney cut out right in front of me. He’s lucky he isn’t dead.”

Lewis raises a brow and returns to talking in Spanish. She huffs, letting her irritation simmer down. The motorcycle is gone now, but she glares after it, rewinding the window to keep out the dust and wind.

They arrive at Pepper Paradiso just after sunset to her relief. She is definitely not experienced enough to drive a foreign vehicle at night. Not when the roads around Tempo are poorly lit, and the thick clouds overhead are completely blocking out both the moon and stars, making the night darker than average. Occasionally, Vivi sees a flash of lightning off in the distance.

“I told mama about Arthur being missing and that Lance is in hospital,” Lewis says as they pull in. He is rubbing his face in a tired motion she mirrors a second later.

“Yeah? What did she say.” Lewis’s mom was, in a word, stoic. She is a person Vivi tries very hard to impress even with repeated reassurances that it was unneeded.

“Not much. Only that everything is worse when you’re tired, and there will be food waiting.”

“Oh…” Vivi doesn’t really know what to say. Usually, the thought of a Pepper prepared dinner would be enough to perk her up. She’s not even hungry.

Pepper Paradiso, usually open later, appears to have closed early today. However, the interior lights are still on, spilling through wide glass windows, illuminating the empty parking bays next to the diner in an island of light. With the only other light sources being the distant houses of Tempo and one solitary street lamp several yards down the main road, it is exceptionally welcoming. Vivi exhales long and hard, bringing the truck to a stop.

As she and Lewis clamber out, dragging luggage with them, the apparent lack of wind catches her attention. Unlike Milton, the air here is thick and stagnant. The prelude to a storm. Perfect. On the horizon, lightning flashes. Grumpily, Vivi pulls out her phone. She should really call her dad. He’d want to know she was back in town. What she really wants is to call her mom. But her mom is in Washington for a conference, meaning it was late, so the time difference wouldn’t work out too well. Her gran didn’t have a phone, so that was out.

“Hey, Lew. I’m going to call my dad. I’ll be in in a second.”

Lewis, now carrying both his and Arthur’s bags, nods, reaching out to take her's as well. Through the window, she sees the silhouette of Lewis’s mom moving to greet him. The main sliding doors are locked like they always are after hours, so she is walking around to come out the side ‘employee’ entrance. The entrance which also led back into the main living area.

As her phone rings, she moves out of view and around to the opposite side of the truck, allowing her to stare out into the inky black desert. Far in the distance, a flash of lightning illuminates the empty landscape. This should be private enough.

“Vivi. I thought I told you to call once you stopped. It’s been two days!”

She rolls her eyes, “Nice to hear from you too.”

“I was worried. This is the first time you’ve been away for such a long period. A text message would have sufficed.”

“I message mom. Also, I’m an adult, I can figure this stuff out myself.” Only, she couldn’t. Not really. But, it wasn’t like ‘dealing with a best friend running off for unexplained reasons’ is a typical adult skill. She is getting off track.

“Well, I’m back in Tempo so you can stop panicking.”

“You’re back in…”

“I’m staying at Lewis’s tonight,” She waves away any incoming questions, “I just wanted to ask you something real quick is all.”

A pause.

“So like, I know that you hate my hobby and all, but is there a particular reason behind that. Like, is there anything I should watch out for…maybe a potentially demon-possessed friend.”

There is dead silence on the other end of the line. Mystery shifts from paw to paw near her feet.

“I think I have expressed my views on this already. What are you…”

I figured maybe someone else was thinking the same before me so I did some research and actually found some takes on this topic.

To name only a few there are the randomly appearing and disappearing doors to rooms of which one can not exsist by physical law as it would lead through the wall right into the kitchen cabinets. A balcony that changes length indicating that there either is another room in the apartment or the wall to the next door neighbours. A single shot into the bathroom that collides heavily with the floor plan given to us in the book “Digimon Adventure tri. Design Works”. The scenes where we are shown the apartment is at the end of the corridor but when we enter the place walk straight and take the second door to the right to enter Taichi’s (and Hikari’s) room we are given scenes where their bedroom is at the corner of the building as well (see third and fourth picture below). The list to these is long and I will adress the relevant ones as I lead through the whys and wherefores of my take on the blue print of the Yagami residence. For now let’s see what we know for sure and go from there.

Given facts - outside

The Yagami family lives in this housing complex in Odaiba Tokyo (source OWG)...

...in apartment number 1306 (source OWG)...

...which happens to be on the second to last floor (source Adventure episode 33)...

...and also at the end of the corridor (source Adventure episode 21 and 32)

That we are at the end of the corridor will be particularly important when we get to the layout of the apartment and the location of the individual rooms.

Given facts - inside

As stated before I took plenty of screenshots that give great insight on the arrangements of the Yagami residence. Also stated before though there is plenty of important inconsistencies. Thanks to the “Digimon Adventure tri. Design Works” we get to see an actual floor plan of the main rooms of the apartment.

What we see here is what I learned a so called LDK which stands for livingroom dining room kitchen. Usually this abbreviation is preceded by a number indicating how many bedrooms there are in addition. You can find this in the side notes of the plan as well.

In the same book we are given a one-point perspective line drawing of Taichi’s bedroom.

This combined with this screenshot (source: tri. - Confession)...

...makes an excellent base to start a blue print for the entire apartment. Now this is where the fun begins. Time to analyze this plan and compare all the evidence captured in screenshots to it to find consistencies and rule out things by educated guessing. Let’s get to work, shall we?

Analyzing the plan

The next step after researching, screenshoting and sorting things was to analyze the floor plan from the “Design Works” book. I reconstructed the (not so quite accurate) one-point-perspective of this bird’s eye view to a flat plan. By doing so it was clear pretty early that even though we have a constructed plan it still is inconsistent in itself looking from an architectural point.

Walls that should have the same thickness to them are slightly off. (Talking inside walls here that obviously are different from those framing the building. I know this seems like nitpicking but there are norms in architecture that should not be ignored completely!) I ended up following a middle ground path adjusting the slightly off indoor walls but keeping the outdoor frame due to lack of better knowing. (Again, we’re talking about 0,x mm based on the picture above. It’s probably not worth mentioning. I’m sorry.) “But the wall separating the kitchen from the dining area is wider!” you might now say. Well, yes - but keep in mind there is a counter like surface on top of it making it broader to place items on top. (Please see reference pictures.)

The seven doors have different widths with should have the same. (Again, lack of norms and standardization. I’m a sucker for precision! Please bear with me.) I decided to adjust them to one and the same size which so happened to be the one of the doors leading to the mysteriously appearing and disappearing rooms opposite to Taichi’s bedroom. The reason why I chose this one and not another is simple: those two had the same width while all the others were different. The majority won here lol.

The furniture themselves aren’t perfect in proportion either but fiddling around with standardized sizes I found on a website helping (mostly foreigners) to furnish their apartment in Tokyo just turned the idea into one huge mess. For the sake of my sanity I decided to keep things as they’re given in the floor plan matching real furniture proportions or not may care about who want.

This left me with an outcome you would probably say “Yea, well... duh!” (You’re kinda right. I had to go all the way for this though. I can’t help myself lol)

Comparing the plan

Now that the first part of the blue print was done it was time to compare it to what we’re given throughout the show. In other words time to rule out those parts of the inconsistencies that just don’t add up in the overall picture.

Comparing doors

Besides the change of colours probably the most talked about issue when it comes to this apartment. The amount and placement of them vary greatly throughout movies and series so here’s a side by side comparison and reasoning why I ruled certain things out.

First off the 4 or 2 doors down the hallway. In some episodes, namely 31, 32 and 34, we are confronted with a much longer hallway leading to the main entrance of the apartment containing 4 instead of 2 doors.

In any other episode of Adventure, of 02, tri., or OWG these additional doors do not show up. (I was hoping I could say this is because it was always the same director or screen writer but that’s not the case so I don’t have a valid explanation for you.)

For a while I considered the one glimpse we get into the toilet in Adventure episode 21 that led me to the thought the third door might be leading to a separated bathroom but since you can see the shower/bathtub in the background of it I wasn’t so sure (I’ll come back to this later when discussing the bathroom.)

The reason why I ended up not taking the two doors left and right next to the main entrance into consideration when working out the floor plan was mostly the kitchen window. In many of the screenshots (and many more occassions throughout the show) we see a window facing the same direction as the main entrance. When looking at the entrance from outside (see above) we find the same window design making it obvious (to me) that this is the kitchen window. If we assume now that there’s another room behind the door to the right in the upper example between entrance and kitchen then the window in the kitchen would make no sense at all as it would face directly into that room. In other footage of the show the hallway is also much shorter not giving enough space for another room which aligns with the window theory. According to just Adventure and 02 those are the only rooms the apartment offers which is not just weird because one might wonder where do the parents sleep but also because we see Hikari having a room of her own in 02. Where did this magically come from? This is where OWG and tri. come to the rescue. In these movies the apartment gets two (actually three, one connecting the two “new” rooms) more doors leading to more rooms. While we never get a look behind those doors in tri. it is one of the main stages for OWG providing us with plenty of information.

Here we see that this room is connected not only to the living room but also to the room we never get to look inside - ever. Also this room is attached to the long balcony that goes all the way past the living room to the end of Taichi’s room. Maybe not worth mentioning at first glance but remember what I said about room orientation in relation to the end of the building? If the building ends where we get to see it ending in any of the outside-the-main-door shots then this room is the one at the end of the building.If Taichi’s room is the one at the end of the building according to the outside-the-balcony shots then this room is sharing one wall with the next door neighbours. This will be interesting when we get to Hikari’s room, so keep it in mind.

Also the middle shot supports the small sketch oft these two rooms in the floor plan of “Design Works” where you can see the array of walls being angled so the door to the unseen room is a bit offset.

Putting these things together we’re getting this:

How wide these rooms are we don’t know. Neither do we know how they’re funished. I’ll get to this at a later point. It is save to say though that for the sake of the parents and Hikari these rooms do exist and provide a privacy space for each of them. Therefore I do add them to my version of the floor plan. Before we get back to the interior of these rooms let’s finish comparing the LDK and set up Taichi’s room as the furniture dimensions of his room contributed immensely to what my final plan looks like.

Comparing the LDK

There’s a lot of rearrangement going on in these rooms when it comes to placement of the furniture. Kitchen equipment and devices switch places and the fridge opens in a different direction. The design of the kitchen table and chairs is switching and sometimes there’s a computer at the wall next to the kitchen table sometimes it’s just a cabinet. The little side table for the phone changes position and so do the cabinets and the TV stand (including TV obviously) in the living room where also the couches change size at random.

I’ll share some of my screenshots for those who are interested in this but I won’t go into detail about it. If I wanted to adress these issues I’d be sitting here with another overly long post like this particular one going on about furniture colour, dimension and placement of a show that couldn’t be further away from this content lol. (Not that I wouldn’t have fun doing it but let’s be real, there has to be a line somewhere!) The main reason for this post is to share my findings about the floor plan of the apartment and since the main positions of things stay the same regarding the LDK there’s no real need for that either.

Alright. Now on to more interesting things.

Analyzing Taichi’s room

Now that we’ve got the easy part out of the way let’s check out the rooms attached to the LDK starting with Taichi’s room as we have the most information about it.

My first step here was to turn the linework we are provided with by the “Design Works” into a flat plan by morphing the perspective following the same path as for the plan analysis. This turned out as an utter failure when I realized I don’t have the tools to do so. I ended up turning to the screenshot from tri. - Confessions and went from there back checking with the linework for proportion and position reference.

To explain how exactly I went about this would would take a riddiculous amount of time. What I did in short was to reengineer the one-point-perspective bird-eye-view we’re getting in this screenshot to a somewhat flat plan. This leaves a lot of lose ends as we don’t see where the wardrobe, the computer desk, the bed, the coffee table, the rug, and the TV stand end.

We do know a few things though:

The wall with the glass doors leading to the balcony is an extention of the living room.

The wall with the door is a given from the floor plan of “Design Works”.

The door to Taichi’s room and the bathroom are also given in said floor plan which indicate the wall separating them being in the middle of them both.

The width of the room is given in both the screenshot and the lineworks. This is the point where I started using Taichi’s size and shoulder width as measurement unit. (Sorry for the abuse, Taichi! You were very helpful though!) With this knowledge I could now determine the layout of Taichi’s room in relation to the already established floor plan setting up the missing wall.

The desk and chair are obvious.

Using what we were given in the original plan of “Design Works” I took the size of the TV stand as given and decided the one in Taichi’s room is the same dimension. I double checked this with the aforementioned website of real furniture proportions and found it - even though shorter - pretty accurate.

Taking a closer look at the lineworks of Taichi’s room you can see that the TV stand alings almost with the door to his room. This now gives us great information about the wardrobe. We do know where the wardrobe starts and how deep it is thanks to the screenshot. We also know where the room ends and the glass doors to the balcony start. Seeing in the lineworks that the wardrobe goes all the way to this wall we now know the dimensions of the wardrobe (keep it in mind, it will determine the size of the other two rooms.)

We know where the smaller PC desk starts (attached to the slightly larger desk), how deep it is and we know it extends to the wall with the balcony doors.

We are also given three sides of the bed and a fixed position in the room as seen in the screenshot. Putting this down into the floor plan gave the missing side to close the bed frame.

From the lineworks I assumed the rug being rather square in shape and having one side given in relation to the coffee table, TV stand and wardrobe width in the screenshot and the lineworks it was easy to place this square down.

The coffee table ended up being a smaller version of the one in the living room adjusting its proportions to the width we’re given in the screenshot.

The balcony doors ended up being half the width of the ones in the living room. I randomly tried this size since there are two panels in Taichi’s room and four in the living room. Positioning this width in the middle of the wall is actually congruent with the lineworks of his room and the “Taichi’s shoulder width” proportion so I settled for that.

Now that all the furnishings were placed down in the blue print I back checked with the website of furniture sizes and calculated side proportions back and forth. After some adjustments and fiddling around I finally ended up with a plan for Taichi’s room in tri. (As I said, the individual steps would take extremely long to lay out to you. If you care, pm me and we go into detail lol) Looking like this:

If you double check this plan with the plan given in the “Design Works” you will find that the position of the doors to Taichi’s bedroom and the bathroom have been adjusted somewhat towards the living room. There’s several reasons for this.

Taichi’s room dimensions are determined by what we just established.

In screenshots throughout the whole show the door leading to Taichi’s (and Hikari’s) room is more in between couch and kitchen table than directly behind the kitchen table.

I’ve not been working on single rooms individually as I guide you through but simultaneously on everything at once making sure everything matches and I don’t end up with a bathroom twice the size of the kitchen...oh wait. I’ll get there, promise! (No that’s not a threat!)

Comparing Taichi’s room

Alright this will be fun. The arrangement of furniture in this room has changed so many times that one could lose count and going by the screenshots I took over the course of 7 movies and 2 seasons I was facing a huge amount of discrepancy.

Comparing the balcony windows

This difference is probably the most noteworthy of them all as it defines the general size of the room.

Honestly, while trying to figure out the cut of the apartment this was the biggest struggle (which transfers to the office of OWG as it is the same situation really). Eventually I had to make a decision and I decided on the cut that goes with the two window planes instead of four. The main reason for my decision was just common sense really. An apartment in Tokyio affordable for a family of four surely isn’t that big of a size. If we went with the four panel window we’d end up with a width of the room identical to the living room (as it has a four panel window). Knowing where the door to Taichi’s room is (and therefore the other wall) this would mean Taichi and Hikari had a room the size of the living room and the dining room just to themselves. This is so highly unlikely considering where they live that I’m sure we can agree that this can’t be the case really. I did mess around with the furniture and arranged them in a wider room testing out theories like “What if those four panels are looking out of the building in a 90° angle to the living room?” and similar things but knowing that the balcony is connected to both Taichi’s room and the living room theories like these were ruled out quickly. Plenty of thought went into this only to come to the conclusion that I will move on with what tri gives us which also is supported in any other episode of Adventure besides 21 and Adventure 02 as well as the official lineworks of the “Design Works” book that served as a source for my plan.

Comparing the wall to the right of the door

There is again a very mentionable difference throughout the show also determining the general cut of the room to a certain extend.

As you can see in the screenshots above the distance between the doorframe and the wall separating Taichi’s room from the bathroom differs in wardrobe depth. I played around with this again which means I moved the door up and down the wall seeing how this would adapt to the furniture inside that room and also how it would affect the arrangements outside in the LDK and for the bathroom. In the end I returned to my base argument of the positioning of the doors. Even though I already had to adjust their placement towards the window side of the apartment due to the bathroom giving difficulties if I didn’t.

There’s more to compare and talk about Taichi’s (and Hikari’s) room but that only regards the interior and as said before that’s a whole different topic one could go on about forever. So let’s move on!

Setting up the bathroom

Honestly there’s very little information about that place. We get one (!) glimpse into this room in Adventure episode 21 where Hikari waits outside the toilet for Koromon finishing his business.

Thanks to the “Design Works” book there is also a sketch of a potential layout which doesn’t even match the plan it belongs to in the slightest when blowing it up to match dimensions. It also has nothing in common with what we see in the screenshot above.

This little sketch which is merely a sidenote of the floor plan in “Design Works” really is so out of proportion that no matter what you do when trying to blow it up and match arrangements of the plan it will not fit at all. Looking at that one screenshot I still decided to go with the sketch rather than what we get from the show since it is obvious that the toilet right behind the door with only enough space for a pair of slippers making people climb over the toilet whenever they want to take a shower is just for pure story telling purposes and not for actual arrangements.

For this part of the floor plan I just guesstimated using the layout we get from the sketch and adjusted it so it would fit in dimensions. I also used the room width we established planning Taichi’s room by simply extending it. Eventually things added up and worked out proportionwise that I ended up with this:

Now that this side of the place is settled time to finish the other side.

Setting up Hikari’s room and the parents’ bedroom

Alright. We can see the finishing line from here!

We already established the wall distribution of the office before which implies the wall distribution of the room we never get to look inside. We just need to determine the width of those rooms. Again using some common sense the missing wall can be nothing but a straight line. Where this is we need to figure out though.

First we need to take a look at what else we know about these rooms or the rooms that should be these - meaning one of them being Hikari’s room we get to know in Adventure 02 and the assumably existing bedroom of the parents. An educated guess would lead us to the assumption that once Hikari was old enough to have her own bedroom (too old to share it with her big brother) the parents gave up on their bedroom and moved into the office. Alternatively they empied the office for her. Let’s see which one it is.

We only get to see Hikari’s room twice throughout Adventure 02 and both times the same shot.

This looks like a lot of information at first glance but when trying to place it down on the plan it doesn’t work out really. What we have is a bed, a desk with a chair and a rug. We also know her desk is under a window (not in front of a balcony door!) and the other two walls are plain. We also don’t know where the door to this room is. The classic movie take on this would indicate that the viewer is looking at these scenes from the doorframe but it might as well be on one of the walls to the side just outside of the viewers sight. We don’t know.

Starting with this window we see it somewhat rules out this room being the office OWG takes place. The office does not have any windows but the balcony doors and two doors leading to other rooms. The rest of the walls are plain.

Taking this information I think it is save to say that the parents gave up on their bedroom and moved into the emptied office. (Makes me wonder where all that stuff went.)

Back to the window of Hikari’s room. I made an assumption here claiming the window we see is facing the same direction as the kitchen window. The reason for this thought is the view we have from outside the apartment on the main entrance.

These two shots as used before point this out best. You can clearly see the kitchen window being close but not right next to the main entrance leaving enough space for a window. The fact that it has the same recessed design as the kitchen window supports this thought.

Obviously I could be totally off with this theory as we’re moving outside of any given content now. The window we see in the two screenshots of Hikari’s room might as well be on the wall facing a 90° angle to what i just talked about.

Taking the furniture size for the desk, chair and bed we established when figuring out Taichi’s room placing it in an arrangement as in the screenshot leaves only one reasonable placement that again supports the theory of where I will put my window.

Next thing I needed to clarify was the width of the room. After some consideration I decided to use the angled arrangement of the wall separating the two rooms as the perfect placement for a wardrobe. Taking what we worked out in Taichi’s room I used his wardrobe and placed in that position. This at first being nothing of a random thought turned out to work surprisingly well for the whole concept and after a little bit of playing around with the furniture I decided that this is where I will close the room.

Obviously I had to check back with the office now being a bedroom if that newly established wall works out for this room as well. What the room needed was a bed and maybe two night stands and a wardrobe. We know the size of a wardrobe by now and I accepted nightstands being about the same dimension as the phone stand. I also turned to my trusty guide on how to furnish an apartment in Tokyo looking up double beds. Placing this down in proportion to the already known single bed of Taichi and Hikari this worked out better than I would’ve hoped for.

One last test seeing how a now reduced in depth two panel window would fit into the wall (remember the issue we had with Taichi’s room at this point? It carried on!) left me satisfied enough to keep it as it is.

That’s when I was sitting on a complete blue print of the apartment completely furnished besides Hikari’s room still looking somewhat empty. Doing some more guesstimation here I gave the poor girl the same convenience as her brother adding a TV plus stand, a carpet and a coffee table and for the hell of it a 2 seats couch because that’s what girls have and the room had the space.

Interview with The Hound Master

The Huntress leaned back into the cushioned velvet with either hand draped over the arms of the high-back chair. Pale light filtered in through an expansive window, its radiating moonlight dancing off the ebon locks of hair that pooled around her shoulders. Thin lips curled with the beginnings of a smirk, the cigarette they harbored rolling into the crook of her mischievous grin.

“I ain’ one for interviews,” she drawled, each word oozing from her lips in a thick Gilnean lilt, “Bu’ I s’pose I could stay long ‘nough. ‘Least ‘til I finish m’ smoke.”

Plucking the vice from her smirk, she held it aloft between index and forefinger and waved the inquirer on. “Wot’s i’ ya’d like t’ know?”

1. What is your name?

“I go by a lot o’ different names these days, bu’ nothing suits m’ fancy better than Eve.”

2. What is your real name?

“Names ‘ave power, mate. If’n my name weren’t already on people’s tongue, I’d be less inclined to tell ya’.”

The Huntress hunched forward with either arm resting on top a knee, her hands dangling in the center to meet with interlaced digits. A coy eyebrow was raised as an airy laugh spilled from her lips. “Bu’, if’n ya’ mus’ know, m’ real name s’ Evelon Rowan ‘Olmwood.”

“M’ a skilled hunter in every aspect of th’ word. I can breed and train a houn’, fire an accurate shot with one eye closed, and track a man down thirty leagues wit’ jus’ a single lock o’ hair.”

6. Stop being a Mary Sue.

” ‘Ow abou’ ya’ stop bein’ a mardy-arse befo’e I shove m’ boot up ya’ bloody ass?” she quipped. gloved digits drumming against her kneecap with growing impatience.

Evelon pulled down her lower eyelid with the tip of her forefinger, leaning forward with a perked eyebrow. “Ya’ blin’ o’ somethin’?”

Gloved fingers run through the thick, black locks of hair. “Ya’re jus’ bloody stupid. Ya’ mum still dress ya’?”

Evelon nudged the hound resting a her feet with the tip of her boot. “S’ me, m’ houn’s, an’ m’ fiance. I don’t need much mo’e family than tha’.”

Her smirk suddenly dropped with furrowed brows, her lips puckering in a contemplative pout. “Well.. Actually there s’ a group o’-...Ya’ know wot? Nevermin’.”

10. Oh? What about pets?

“I consider m’ houn’s t’ be mo’e like family than pets. ‘Owever, I did get Makis a lovely Calico cat once when ‘e was returnin’ ‘ome from some business trip. Thin’s ol’ as dust by now, though.”

11. That’s cool I guess, now tell me about something you don’t like.

“Well... Firstly, you. Secondly, I ain’ no fan o’ hypocrisy. Leaves a bitter taste in m’ mouth when a man can’t stan’ by his own convictions, ‘specially when shit gets rough. M’ a liar, a cheater, an’ maybe a fool dependin’ on who ya’ ask...Bu’ I ain’ no hypocrite. If’n life s’ one way, than s’ one way. No bloody exceptions.”

12. Do you have any hobbies/activities you like doing?

“Beside th’ obvious shit? Hrm... I guess I enjoy drinkin’ wit’ some decent company, ‘specially over a game o’ cards. Nappin’ through a warm afternoon wit’ m’ houn’s s’ always enjoyable. A good hunt does well for th’ spirits as well. Mmmm. Wot else....? Oh! M’ never one t’ say no t’ a right good argy-bargy!”

13. Ever hurt anyone before?

“ ‘course I ‘ave! An’ if’n anyone tells ya’ different, then they’re a bloody liar. I can hurt ya’ if’n ya’d like a demonstration?”

Russet hues steal a glance at the burning cigarette held between her fingers. “I ain’ got any bad habi’s...” she quips, her free hand reaching for the metallic flask at her hip.

“Ya’ ever heard o’ Bruce Alderstone? ‘E was a prized fighter in Gilneas, an’ I’ve admired ‘is style since I was no taller than this ‘ere chair.”

“Aside from ‘im,” she added, her chin falling into an open palm. “Then perhaps m’ ol’ man.”

18. Gay, straight, or bisexual?

“Considerin’ m’ engaged, I’ll go wit’ straight.”

19. Do you go to school?

A boisterous laugh filled the room as Eve threw herself back into her chair. “S’ a good one! School... HA!”

20. Do you ever want to marry and have kids one day?

“K-kids...?” Her laughter was immediately curt short at the presented postulation. A crimson blush coated her cheeks as she absently scratched the scar spanning across the bridge of her nose with an averted gaze. “Erm... Never really thougt m’self as a mother befo’e.”

21. Do you have any fanboys/fangirls?

“I better, wot wit’ everythin’ I’ve done!” she chuffed, puffing out her chest. Once more her lips wield their classic smirk.

22. What are you most afraid of?

"If’n I told ya’, then ya’d use tha’ against me.”

23. What do you usually wear?

Evelon tugs at the crimson fabric coiled around her neck. “M’ scarf, m’ good ol’ boots an’ wotever leathers ain’ already drenched in sweat.”

24. Do you love someone?

“I do. Very, very much.” With a nonchalant shrug she adds,“ ‘E’s m’ everythin’.”

25. When was the last time you wet yourself?

“Eh...” The Huntress clicked her tongue before heaving a sigh, once more a digit reaching up to pick at her scar. “S’ an embarrassin’ story tha’ I’d rather save fo’ another day.”

26. Well, it’s not over yet!

“M’ cigarette s’ burnin’ low.”

"M’ my own class.”

"I don’ make frien’s. I make connections an’ contacts, bu’ not frien’s. Too much o’ a hassle.”

Evelon held up her flask in response, swishing around its contents with an enticing waggle. “Spiced rum out o’ a metallic flask on a hot, summer evein’. Tastes best when s’ got a bit o’ age t’ i’.”

“Right beside m’ family’s ol’ hearth wit’ th’ fire goin’.” Raising her flask, she offered a silent toast. “Really miss tha’ cottage an’ all th’ memories i’ had.”

“M’ fiance...?” Her brows furrowed as she canted her head, “Wot kind o’ question s’ tha’?”

33. What’s your bra cup size and/or how big is your willy?

“Ya’ tell me ya’s an’ I’ll tell ya’ mine.”

“Fook th’ ocean! Ya’ ain’ ever sure wot’s swimmin’ in those depths. If’n I had t’ choose betwixt th’ two, i’d be a lake.”

THE NUMEROLOGY OF YOUR HOUSE ADDRESS.

Every home has a story, a history that makes it the way it is today. In many cases, you can see that history, and that personality, in the small cracks in the walls, and the faded markings on doorways.

More than its history, according to Numerology, every house also has an innate personality that you can unlock by understanding your home’s number.

WHAT IS NUMEROLOGY

At its most basic level, Numerology is the study of the numbers that make up the Universe.

Numerology has a long history, dating back at least 3,000 years to Ancient Mesopotamia, and is practiced by different cultures across the world including the Greeks, Romans, Egyptians, Chinese, Indians, and Japanese.

Modern Western Numerology is largely based on Greek Numerology, otherwise known as Pythagorean Numerology, as the mathematician, philosopher and teacher was one of its most famous followers.

Pythagoras and his followers believed that the Universe was constructed according to a divine geometric plan, which is why the same geometric patterns recur repeatedly throughout nature.

Following on from this, they believed that numbers are the building blocks of the Universe and that, like human DNA, they carry information about the Universe that can be read and deciphered.

Numerologists believe that everything in the Universe has a number, or a series of numbers, that define its innate character. For example, a Life Path Number, which is determined by a person’s date of birth, reveals in general how their life will play out, the opportunities they will have, and the lessons they will learn.

LOCATION NUMEROLOGY

Like people, places also have numbers, which reflect the energy of the location. It is possible for people to be compatible or incompatible with a location, feeling comfortable, or decidedly uncomfortable, in that space. This can explain why some people fall in love with a place the moment that they arrive, while others just don’t feel right in a certain location, despite there being no obvious reason for their discomfort.

DETERMINING THE NUMBER OF YOUR HOUSE

To determine the number of your home, you first need to select which part of your address has the most resonance for your home.

For example, perhaps you live at 1704 8th Avenue. In this case, it is your house number that is the most important number for your home, so you will use your house number to determine the number of your home.

To do this, you need to reduce your house number to a single digit number from 1-9, or one of the three Master Numbers (11, 22, 33), which are special numbers within numerology.

0 is also a significant number within numerology, but as it means infinite possibility, and all things that can possibly be existing, you will never encounter a person or a place that is characterized by the number 0.

To reduce your house number to a single digit or Master Number, you simply need to add the digits together.

For example, 1+7+0+4=12, and then this is to be reduced further 1+2=3, revealing that the number of this home is 3.

If you live in an apartment, for example, apartment 31C at 1704 8th Avenue, then your apartment number supersedes your street address.

In this case, you determine the number in the same way, but don’t ignore the C. In numerology all letters have a corresponding number, so you need to determine the number of the letter C (see the list below) and add this to your equation.

So, in the case of apartment 31C you would add 3+1+3=9, making your home a number 9.

3 – C, L, U

4 – D, M, V

5 – E, N, W

6 – F, O, X

7 – G, P, Y

8 – H, Q, Z

9 – I, R

Perhaps you live at a named address, for example, Rose Cottage, in this case, the name of the address is more significant than any other part of the address. To calculate the number of this address, assign each letter a number, and add these together until you get a single digit or Master Number.

So, for Rose Cottage we would determine the number for Rose 9+6+1+5=21, which reduces to 2+1=3. We would then determine the number for Cottage 3+6+2+2+1+7+5=21, which reduces to 2+1=3.

Here, in theory, you would add 3+3 to give you a number of 6 for your home, but as 33 is a Master Number, you would keep 33.
