I’m seeing the “people don’t expect physically disabled people to be less disabled for their comfort so why do they expect mentally ill/neurodivergent people to do so?” memes making the rounds again, and I am here to remind you, as an autistic and ADHD, mentally ill, chronically ill person with multiple physical impairments that this is just not the case.

If you are both and that is your personal experience, I obviously do not expect you to deny that, but please be aware that this is very much *not* universal.

I am a full time mobility aid user and part-time wheelchair user. Both my personal experience and thousands of accounts from the wheelchair user community reflect the fact that most wheelchair users and other mobility aid users *continually* have our boundaries pushed around our use of mobility aids for the ease and comfort of others.

“I know we said step-free access but it’s just a couple of small steps so that counts, right? Our staff can lift you if you *really* can’t manage.”

“Oh we can’t really fit your chair or rollator in the car so you’ll just have to manage without them. You walked that far last week with the rollator so doing a few days around a city with a stick should be fine, right?”

“Your cousin really doesn’t want a stick in her wedding photos so you’ll just have to manage, but there will be lots of seats and it’s not like you have to stand up really.”

“You’re much too young to be using a stick anyway. Wait til you get older and you *really* know what pain is.”

“I know that restaurant is on the second floor and there’s no lift but the rest of the team really like the food there so I’m sure you’ll manage, won’t you?”

“We really don’t like you using that wheelchair - surely it will make you more disabled?”

“I know our accessible toilet is down a flight of stairs but people don’t really need to use a bathroom in a restaurant do they?”

“Oh, we booked this restaurant for x celebration (bonus points if it’s for *your* birthday/graduation etc) because it’s so nice and it just *didn’t* occur to us to check if it was accessible!”

These are just picked off the top of my head as a number of things I have encountered over my years as a mobility aid and wheelchair user.

I picked this out of my various impairments because wheelchair users are so frequently regarded as the sort of “iconic” disabled person, but my boundaries on pain and mobility aid - including wheelchair - use are genuinely pushed at least as much as those of my neurodivergences and mental illnesses. I have been accused of “bad behaviour”, “doing it for attention”, “faking it”, “making a scene” and “not really disabled” multiple times when the issues causing the problem were physical - including when my legs have physically given out on me in public places, causing me to fall.

None of this is peculiar to my experience. I have encountered hundreds of thousands of similar accounts and experiences from other disabled people all over the world.

I will absolutely allow that it sometimes feels easier, more “valid”, to ask for reasonable adjustments/accommodations for physical impairments than for neurodivergence or mental illness, but I would also contend that that is an issue of internalised disableism at least as much as anything else.

I believe at least part of the issue is that the image of disability the majority of the abled population has is that it is an unchanging, monolithic thing. “Can’t see”. “Can’t hear”. “Can’t walk.” “Can’t speak.” Whereas the majority of disability is *considerably* more nuanced than that. This is *very* much the case with neurodivergences and mental illnesses, but it is also very much the case with physical impairments.

Basically - being disabled is often pretty awful. The world is extremely inaccessible. It is often tempting to view other types of disabled people as “having it easier” or “encountering more understanding” etc etc. While this may absolutely be true on an individual level, particularly intersectionally (money, race, gender, queerness etc *absolutely* affect life as a disabled person) on a systemic level, it is equally absolutely *not* the case.

And various institutions *massively* benefit from internal envy and infighting in any marginalised community. Perpetuating the idea that “those people have it waaay easier/are stealing your resources etc etc” lets institutions off the hook. The only way we can practically improve the situation - accessibility, services etc etc - for *all* of us is by solidarity with each other as oppressed, marginalised disabled people.

Naadam - and how Mongolia celebrates it.

What is Naadam in Mongolian culture and how would Mr Mongolia celebrate it?

Naadam is a traditional sports festival in Mongolia. It includes Mongols adorning themselves in national dress, mounted soldiers in uniform, music, dancers, and of course, the "Three Manly Sports":

Horse riding, wrestling and archery!

Naadam is a 2000 year old event, however, the term "Naadam" was coined in the 13th century by Chinggis Khaan (according to the secret history of the Mongols) and has been celebrated ever since.

Naadam used to be a preparation/practices/training for war. Competitions such as this would take place just before major battles in order for the war commanders to select which soldiers would be in which division.

Individuals who demonstrated exceptional strength, speed, and flexibility in wrestling, keen eyesight and precise hand-orientation in spear-throwing and archery, and also patience and skill in horse training/horse racing were carefully selected during the competitions.

Naadam takes place around mid-July in the heat of the summer, and is considered one of the biggest and most important festivals in Mongol culture along with Tsaagan Sar.

National Naadam is celebrated in the capital - Ulaanbaatar, in the national sports stadium. However it's not just restricted to the city! It takes place all across the country.

The Naadam festival kicks off with a ceremonial transfer of the symbolic "Nine Banners of the Great Mongol Empire" from the Government House to the Naadam stadium, escorted by honorary guards.

After a speech by the president or a representative, the games officially commence. In Ulaanbaatar, the capital, the event assumes a grand scale, drawing the most talented wrestlers, horse trainers, and archers from all corners of Mongolia!

As I've previously mentioned, Naadam takes place in the countryside too! In the countryside, herders journey to towns not only to partake in the festivities but also to reunite with friends and relatives, they may not have seen in a while.

Mongolia also has a bit of a reunion - with different Mongolic ethnic groups and other ethnic groups who's people participate in Naadam coming over to visit. Buryat and Uriankhai people are an example, and they (So, Buryat Mongols, Uriankhai/"forest people" as Mongols call them, usually denoting the likes such as Tuvans and Yakuts) have their own archery competitions. It's basically like one big get together!

Wrestling

Mongolian wrestling has no time limit and one objective - avoid touching the ground with anything other than your feet, or else you lose the match.

It also has no weight classes!

The National Wrestling Championship takes place during Naadam , however even before this, there are previous stages.

First is Soum (village) Naadam. Soum Naadam showcases wrestlers from various villages vying for the opportunity to represent their respective villages at the regional level.

Wrestlers who win at the Soum Naadam progress to the Aimag (province) Naadam, where they contend against other wrestlers within their own province to win the opportunity to represent the province.

The ultimate challenge awaits the winner of the Aimag Naadam at the National Naadam in Ulaanbaatar, the grandest and final tournament. Here, the aimag representatives vie for the prestigious title of national champion!

I definitely think Mr Mongolia is an avid wrestler/quite sporty himself (jock™) however he is a nation and so his nation strength and... Many, many years of experience would mean that it would be unfair for the most part if he went against humans. And besides, he absolutely risks outing himself if he participated in Naadam, especially with how popular wrestling is and uhh, considering the wrestling outfits... The lack of anonymity with that comes with it hahah.

However I think he participates in his own way. I think occasionally he helps with being with being a referee. Another thing: music. During Mongol national wrestling matches, you can often hear someone singing a Mongolian long song in the background. A long song is well, a song, which doesn't actually have a lot of words, but the the words are drawn out by the singer and emphasis is put on reaching impressive notes and putting power and volume in the voice. I think he does musical performances during naadam!

Archery

The Mongols are famous for their archery. There are many different types of Mongol archery.

There's Khalkha Archery, the most practiced one (seeing as the Khalkha Mongols are the majority ethnic group in Mongolia), spanning across a remarkable duration of 48 hours.

Those who triumph in this contest earn the esteemed distinction of the state archery title.

There's also women's archery! As for the women's archery tournament, they display their prowess by releasing 20 arrows towards a 60-meter target, while their male counterparts take aim with 40 arrows at a distance of 75 meters. The target itself comprises a symmetrical arrangement of diminutive leather cylinders, artfully positioned in rows of two and three.

Two red cylinders occupy the center of the target, but hitting them doesn't earn extra points. Each hit on a target gives one point, but merely hitting isn't enough for a score. The target must move a set distance from its starting point to count towards the final score.

There's also Uriankhai archery and Buryat archery - with Uriankhai archery only being practiced by men, and is practiced by the Uriankhai ethnic groups (this is a name Mongols give to what they consider Northern "forest people" like Tuvans or Yakuts). It has ties to religious ceremonies related to their culture. Buryat archery is practiced by the Buryat minority ethnic group of Mongolia. Both of which take place during the national Naadam festival.

They even have child archers!

I definitely think Mongolia is very passionate about archery, and watches the archery competitions intently. I think he helps with setting up the targets and prepping some of the archers when he can. He finds it fascinating to watch them display their skills and techniques with such precision and accuracy - and he wishes he could participate himself! He believes it is a testament to the level of dedication and hard work that athletes put into their craft and loves the satisfaction of the perfect hit - he'll always appreciate a good archer. Further, he puts time aside to go and watch the Buryat and Uriankhai archery with Buryatia and the others as its quite important to them all.

Horse racing

Over a thousand horses gather from all corners of the region to partake in this grand event. Diverging from Western traditions, these races traverse immense distances, spanning a remarkable range of 15 to 30 kilometers. The length of each race is intricately tied to the age of the horses, with the seasoned contenders gallantly competing over the longest stretches.

Curiously, the jockeys who guide these horses are not seasoned professionals, but rather children as young as 5 years old, with the oldest among them being 13. Yet, it is the horse's prowess that truly determines the outcome, as the race serves as a testament to their remarkable skills.

Age and gender play crucial roles in the classification of horses within the realm of horse racing. For example, in the case of geldings, they are divided into distinct age groups, spanning from 2 years old up to 6 years and older.

The races commence in a distinctive manner. All the horses gather behind a standard-bearer, cross the finish line together, and then follow the guidance of the official rider to reach the starting line.

In each class, the top 5 performers are crowned as "airgiyn tav," and the top three champions proudly claim gold, silver, and bronze medals. People joyfully sing their praises while showering them with fermented mare's milk (airag) on their rump, neck, and cheek.

The victorious jockey ascends to the esteemed title of "tumny ekh," signifying their leadership over a multitude of ten thousand.

Multiple races are showcased during Naadam. Stallions, specifically those known as Azarga, have a race of their own, while geldings partake in a minimum of three races. Further, a special race is organised specifically for pacing horses in Ulaanbaatar.

Remarkably, even the horse that crosses the finish line last in the two-year-old category is bestowed with a special appellation: "bayan khodood," meaning "full stomach." A heartfelt song resonates through the air, expressing good wishes and luck for the humble competitor to emerge triumphant in the following year.

The subject of child-jockeys seem to be somewhat contested amongst Mongols themselves. I'm not going to touch on that debate, however it should be noted that safety measures have been implemented in order to make sure that the race is as smooth as possible, but I understand that this can be a point of controversy. I definitely think Mongolia does his best in making sure the riders are well prepared/equipped for the races to ensure that have the best chances of coming out uninjured/relatively unscathed as possible. I think he puts extra time and care into this aspect of his Naadam participations considerably. He enjoys it to an extent as it reminds him of when he was a very young horse rider, and he does enjoy the celebrations afterwards, however the safety of the riders is at the forefront of his mind.

Other Naadam headcanons:

-Because Mongols usually wear their best clothes to Naadam, Mongolia definitely does too! He has a different outfit planned for each day.

-He uhh definitely enjoys all the food that's about 🤤 (khuushur, buuz)

-Probably floods his social media with pictures during this time

-Overall, it's quite an exciting yet busy time for him, he is involved in both the preparations for Naadam and participation in some aspects of Naadam, whilst also making sure to keep socialising with all the people he's invited over! But he manages it well.

Bearfolk are large, intimidating humanoids mostly found in far northern environments. Standing on average over 7 feet tall and generally weighing between four and six hundred pounds, they are densely packed with muscle and thick fur. The largest majority of bearfolk are subjects of the Bear King, and protect the northern cities and wilderness that he rules over. Many share very boisterous and jovial personalities, mixed with the brutal power of their strength and the harsh environment in which they live. Fights and friendships are both quick for many bearfolk, as you must be prepared to both defend that which is important to you and to find allies to ensure mutual survival.

Pathfinder 2e

The Bear King is a fey lord from the First World who has settled onto the Material. Whether out of exile or personal preference he won't say, but he seems to share connections with many of the other fey lords still in the First World. He established his kingdom long ago, but despite his own power and the bearfolk he rules over, he has never sought to expand, only to hold it against those who would take it. You can place his realm in the far north of the Lands of the Linnorm Kings, the Realm of the Mammoth Lords, or Iobaria as some of the most likely locations, though northern Irrisen or Mendev would work as well.

I had considered making bearfolk as an ancestry, but that is a lot more work and so I think it would be better suited to its own project rather than part of one of these weekly conversions. I might collect a few potentially interesting new ancestries and put together a full release for them, but we'll see.

13th Age

The Bear King is no Icon. His power is not great enough individually to take that claim, but he is connected to a greater council of Fey Lords, who could potentially garner that level of influence as a group. They largely exist outside the territory of the Dragon Empire and its surroundings, but their influence could be growing in it, potentially upsetting the current balance of power. Depending on the story, bearfolk may be making their way into the Dragon Empire in order to explore or scout for a potential invasion, or travellers heading outside of the Empire could find themselves within the Bear King's realm, having to contend with a foreign power while outside the main sphere of influence of their own Icons.

Huh... interesting twist in the pokeani episode today...

We really whipped through the third part of the battle between Leon and Ash. Given that both contenders were at half their complement or better, and expecting this to be a three-episode battle, I figured that we’d probably start knocking out pokemon rather quickly.

Rillaboom proved to be a tough nut to crack for Ash, as the grass-type knocked out not one, but two of Ash’s contenders. Most of this was accomplished flexible uses of its Drum Beating attack, which, as pointed out by Professor Oak, seemed to work as well as vine whip in terms of versatility. Even Ash’s Bulbasaur, watching on with the rest, had to acknowledge it. That said, I imagine that this is pretty atypical for how Drum Beating works, given how impressed everyone was. I suppose if Ash can twist moves around to do things they’re not meant to, so can Leon.

With Dragonite and Sirfetch’d down and out thanks to Rillaboom, Ash had to turn back to Dracovish, who still had that weird thing going on with its spikes. It proved helpful again, letting Dracovish wrangle two of Drum Beating’s massive roots and destroy them before they could finally take down the simian terror, spurred on by the spirit of Sirfetch’d as they charged in for the final blow.

It was very nice to see our best boy, Clemont, get a brief moment in the spotlight as they witnessed the end of that match-up considering the prominence both Sirfetch’d and Dracovish had in the series’ visit to Lumiose City.

Sadly, we failed to get any sort of meaningful explanation for these weird glowing spikes/fins on Dracovish before they were punted into the earth by the seemingly invincible Cinderace. It seems like the Libero ability is just as gnarly in the anime as it is in the games.

Of course, with Ash being down to his final contender, Pikachu was sent out to finish up the match. I wholly expected the initial match-up that begun this battle to resume between Cinderace and Pikachu, but Leon is impulsive as Ash apparently, as noted by Dawn earlier in the match.

Leon instead opted to sub in his ace, Charizard, to gigantamax against Pikachu’s massive electric Z-Move. And that’s were the episode went off the rails...

I knew something was going to be up with Eternatus, given last week’s preview, but I wasn’t sure it would have anything to do with the actual match. I figured it might just start causing havoc elsewhere and cut the closing ceremonies short. But apparently, Ash and Leon’s eagerness to outdo each other with the massive power between Gigantamax Wildfire and 10,000,000 Volt Thunderbolt caused some sort of reaction that replicated, at least locally, the Darkest Day, a phenomenon that we probably didn’t expect to return after having dealt with it much earlier in the series.

I suspect that Eternatus might actually do something to stop it this time, being a loyal pokemon now to Leon, though I wouldn’t be surprised if it did something to make the situation worse again too. Either way, it’s safe to say... the finals are on hold for the moment.

This might be a light blessing for Ash, as it really looked like he wasn’t going to be able to pull this battle off based on how he had to put everything into that final attack, and still had a semi-fresh Cinderace to go up against after. If Leon is as impulsive and cocksure as I think he is though, even if Leon has to exhaust his pokemon to stop any sort of impending disaster, he’ll probably still ask Ash to continue the match, thus evening the odds slightly.

If that’s the case, I wonder if this really will count as a true victory for Ash, given the fact he would not only have that handicap, but the use of all three major pokemon enhancements in one match. If they’re going to write Ash winning... I’d rather the writers have done it in a way that actually legitimized Ash’s skills...

I suppose we’ll see how they handle this next week, but so far, I’m pretty worried for how they’re going to end these finals.

Pakistan police halt rally by Imran supporters, arrest dozens

New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell faces a possible recall election as violent crime spikes, uncollected trash overflows into the streets and she contends with allegations she had an affair with a member of her security detail.

The first Black woman to be elected mayor in 2018, Cantrell easily won re-election in 2021. But her popularity has waned as the number of murders has climbed, allowing New Orleans to capture a title last year that no municipality wants — the murder capital of the nation.

Her second term has also been plagued by questions about her personal use of a city-owned apartment in the French Quarter and her relationship with a member of her security detail.

Organizers of an effort to recall Cantrell delivered nearly a dozen boxes of signed petitions to the registrar of voters’ office last week, just ahead of a deadline to seek a recall election. Organizers said they gathered enough signatures to force a recall vote.

“We’re talking about our lights, our trash, our streets, our crime, our children,” said Eileen Carter, one of the organizers spearheading the effort.

With a population of 377,000 that is 58% Black, New Orleans had the highest number of murders per capita in the country in the first half of last year, after falling off dramatically in 2019, according to NBC affiliate WDSU of New Orleans.

Homicides in New Orleans had increased about 144% through mid-September in 2022, compared with the first nine months of 2019, according to data from the Metropolitan Crime Commission, a public safety nonprofit. By the end of the year, a total of 265 homicides had been committed in the city, according to official numbers.

“In 2022, we were the nation’s murder capital, how does that happen?” Carter asked.

Cantrell’s office did not respond to multiple requests for comment.

Her communications director recently sent a statement to USA Today that said, “The mayor continues to work on behalf of the people of New Orleans. The city just came off a successful and safe Mardi Gras, and crime is down in numerous major areas. Today and every day, the mayor remains focused on delivering real results for the people of New Orleans.”

In January, Cantrell announced the formation of a violent crime reduction task force, saying New Orleans was part of a trend occurring in major cities across the country, where violent crime is rising and the number of officers on the streets is falling because of staffing shortages.

“So far, 2023 has already been met with a significant increase in violent crime, and now with the proper resources at our disposal, I cannot think of a better moment to establish this task force," Cantrell said in a statement announcing the unit.

She said the group of police officers and other public safety officialswould be "laser-focused on preventing violent crime in our city" and removing "the most violent offenders from our streets.”

City officials said Cantrell's office has also taken steps to improve garbage collection with two new contracts and other improvements. Service was disrupted for weeks after Hurricane Ida struck in August 2021, and it had already fallen behind because of staffing shortages during the pandemic.

Cantrell, who is married, is also contending with allegations that she had a relationship with a subordinate. The accusation was contained in a divorce filing made by the wife of New Orleans police officer Jeffrey Vappie, who is a member of Cantrell’s security detail. In the petition, Vappie's wife claimed her husband was having an affair with Cantrell, according to the news outlet nola.com.

Vappie said through his attorneys last month that he never admitted to his wife that he and the mayor were in a relationship, according to nola.com. An attorney for Vappie did not immediately respond Tuesday to a request for comment.

Cantrell has also faced calls for an investigation over her use of a city-owned apartment, with detractors saying she's using it for her personal benefit while it's meant for city business only. Cantrell’s office said her use of the apartment is consistent with that of previous mayors.

Recall organizers have not said how many signatures they have collected, but they claim to have reached the threshold to force an election. Nearly 50,000 signatures, or 20% of registered voters in Orleans Parish, are needed to hold a recall election, but that number could change: Recall supporters filed a lawsuit this week claiming the number of active voters in Orleans Parish is actually much lower than officials suggest and could be off by potentially tens of thousands of voters.

The registrar of voters has 20 days to certify the recall petition and send it to Gov. John Bel Edwards. If enough signatures have been collected, Edwards would issue an election proclamation within 15 days.

New Orleans resident W.C. Johnson, 75, said he initially supported Cantrell when she was a member of the New Orleans City Council, but he has changed his mind.

“Cantrell is not a manager, she is not good for the city," he said. "She has mismanaged the Office of the Mayor of New Orleans so badly, we need to get somebody in there that’s going to be able to put the house back in order.”

In a 2022 quality of life survey for Orleans and Jefferson parishes conducted by the University of New Orleans, 31% of city residents said they approved of the job Cantrell was doing, while 62% said they were unhappy with her performance.

The survey found that crime had “a profound effect on the overall quality of life in Orleans” and that residents were “very dissatisfied with the quality of life in the city and say the city has become a worse place to live in the past five years.”

Resident Annette Cranford-Hamilton, 60, who supports the recall effort, said she was the victim of a crime last yearwhen a stray bullet entered her home, “leaving plaster all over my husband” after it struck a wall in the master bedroom.

“I don’t feel safe at all," she said. "I’m afraid to leave my house. I am afraid to drive my car.

“We need someone that’s going to care about our city and fix our city. It’s broken," she continued. "It needs some nurturing, and I don’t feel that Latoya is doing that. I feel LaToya Cantrell is out for LaToya Cantrell and not the people of the city of New Orleans.”

Got a little bit annoyed at the popular reply to that post lamenting the line about coworkers not being your friends (it feels like another “both things can be true” situation), but for all I know the relationship between the two bloggers made it make a lot of sense, and I’m trying to lessen my time in discourse/arguments, so I’m making my own post about the concept.

Obviously, there can definitely be lots of relationships between adults that are not “friends”, “lovers,” or “loathed enemies”. You can be acquaintances, you can be associates, you can be friendly acquaintances, you can be queerplatonic, you can be people who get along really well in a certain setting but never interact outside of it.

It is true that some people are perfectly fine keeping their professional and personal relationships and lives completely separate. More power to them.

It is probably true for most introverts that spending a great deal of time with your friends is more enjoyable than spending a great deal of time with your acquaintances.

It is also true that for some people, spending 40+ hours a week, 50 weeks a year, in the same context with a group of people, being obligated to perform labor, is a lot more pleasant if at least some people in that group are their friends, rather than acquaintances or associates. It’s the same as how some people prefer doing group projects with their friends rather than with complete strangers.

Different people have different emotional preferences, desires, and needs. These differences do not mean that any particular set of needs or preferences make someone superior, or that having a set of needs mean someone isn’t “bothering” to regulate their emotions, or even necessarily that they’re doing something wrong.

The same way that different people can require different communication styles, have different intellectual disabilities, or need different physical accommodations, different people can also have very large differences in how they process relationships and emotions.

Even people with the exact same set of mental illnesses can have these exhibit themselves in very different ways, and interact with each other in very different ways. There really isn’t a universal standard of “if x makes you unhappy, you’re doing something wrong and you should feel bad, no matter what your situation.”

This point is NOT trying to argue that people “need” to have friends in the workplace. All it is saying is, some people would PREFER to have friends in their workplace. Not just friendly coworkers; actual friends that they really like and trust and can regularly hang out with outside of work. And I’m also contending that this is not a failing on their part, in any way. These people aren’t inferior, they aren’t “too immature for life”, and they aren’t “failing to regulate their emotions properly”. They literally just have a perfectly reasonable preference.

I’m also saying that it really sucks to have this preference, and to then find that the vast majority of American city workplace culture actively discourages this.

Working a full-time job in America is hard enough. People are saying, “this is yet another aspect of the American capitalistic hellscape that sucks for me,” and it’s odd that the response on this of all websites is “Yeah? Well, suck it up; being an adult means being able to handle the 9-5 grind without even a friend beside you to make it more tolerable.”

It’s just a really strange take, to see “I wish I could perform labor with a group of friends instead of coworkers”, and to think this means the person somehow doesn’t know how to have relationships with people that aren’t “friend” or “enemy”.

There IS also an oft-unmentioned toxic side to the “Coworkers aren’t your friends” adage.

Yes, it’s true that its typical meaning is, “You can’t interact with coworkers the way you interact with your friends; the rules of conduct are different”. I’m not disputing that.

It’s ALSO true that sometimes it’s used in the context of “You literally cannot be friends with your coworkers because you cannot trust them; every company is a Machiavellian hellscape of schemers who will step on you in a heartbeat to get ahead”. Not always to such an extreme extent, but there is an idea that your coworkers can’t be trusted.

Some of this is admittedly based on fact - there are extremely toxic workplaces where this is the case.

But I think it goes without saying that this is... very much worth complaining about? If you spend half your waking hours in this toxic environment, that is... objectively bad? (I’m not saying it isn’t worth it; just that it’s definitely a con rather than a pro)

Even with the typical meaning (keep a professional distance from your coworkers), there are... still valid reasons for complaining.

It’s been said on this website before, at length, that a lot of people in America are deeply lonely.

The way a lot of the country is structured is based on a nuclear family model, where you’re not really expected to be in close proximity with anyone besides your immediate family.

Single people are therefore more likely to live alone.

It’s also structured around... promoting car ownership, so that lots of things are driving distance away; it can be hard to gather with people if you don’t have access to a car, or can’t drive.

It seems like people REALLY LIKE walking communities, e.g. college campuses; and the lack of them make it unlikely that non-student adults have many close friends. There was a relatable tweet about how Jesus’s biggest miracle was having 13 close friends in his thirties.

Mental illness, separation from family, poverty, physical disabilities, and being part of marginalized communities don’t seem to help with the loneliness.

The pandemic also did not help.

Even if there’s very good reason for keeping your coworkers at a professional distance, it can still suck. If your work tires you out so that all you can do after work is go back home (to where you may live alone or with people you don’t like) and try to get some rest, then you probably aren’t going to have the energy to try and overcome the obstacles of distance and executive dysfunction to meet up with a friend. Which means that for the bulk of your time, you’re only spending time with people you have to keep at a distance.

If that’s the case for you, that legitimately sucks! You have every right to complain about it!

As an added bonus, if you’re mentally ill in a specific way/set of ways, it can be harder for you than for neurotypicals to follow the correct “codes of conduct”. You have strangers, you have acquaintances, you have friends, and now you have this separate group of people who are none of the previous three, and with another set of implicit rules governing how to behave around them. It’s a lot of extra work! Maybe it’s necessary work, but it’s still frustrating.

The adage also isn’t 100% true. It is possible to make friends with your coworkers. Turov, Belarus

Turov was an ancient capital of the Dregovichs tribe - one of the three Eastern Slavic tribes that are considered ancestors of the modern Belarusian people (the others being Krivichs and Drevlians).
