do you have any particular thoughts regarding marcille being a half-elf? its interesting to me considering the fact that she seems self-conscious about being a half-elf, but denies it when its brought up
i remember marcille looking visibly uncomfortable over laios simply asking her how old she is, which i think the only reason she might feel nervous about this is because it might reveal her as a half-elf to him.
she's never corrected anybody whose called her an elf either.
never mind the circumstances of the reveal, in which thistle goes on about how half-elves are inferior and accusing her of wanting to become full blooded elf, she seemed particularly upset like he struck a nerve-
i wish the half-elf thing was built upon more. also, underrated marcille line:
okay so i revisited this sequence just to make sure I could back myself up and it's just... man. there's a lot going on.
the first reaction we get from Marcille is this huge panel that takes up half of the page
she is viscerally affected. flushing to the tips of her ears with the intensity of it. and we see it again, a few pages later
so it might seem like she's embarrassed about it and lying to herself, but... I really think it's just that Thistle is accidentally hitting sore spots. If you really look at what he says to get these reactions
"you'll live out your entire life [...] and die that way too"
"a hundred years from now, nobody will be there"
Hear me out. I think, if he stuck to harping on about her inferiority without bringing up how terrifyingly long-lived she is, she wouldn't have been as bothered. But right now, Thistle is accidentally hitting all the marks on Marcille's deepest fears-- and this is after the Winged Lion promised her that her dreams could come true in an extremely vulnerable moment, so it also hits her slightly guilty conscience as well.
I do truly believe that Marcille isn't bothered about being a half-elf the way that people assume she'd be bothered by it. To her, the biggest problem with being a half-elf is that it's isolating.
On one hand, it's not hard to imagine why she'd distance herself from elves in the west. A lot of them can clock her as a half-elf on sight, unlike other races, and therefore she's always branded with this weird stigma of being Othered -- I would even say that she considers herself lucky for being born outside of elven culture instead of having to grow up in it. I mean, just... look at the way elves talk about her.
Skipping past the uncomfortable implication of what 'not tolerating the existence' of half-elves would actually entail, this is incredibly fucking annoying. You can see why she wouldn't want to be around elves much. You see a lot of Marcille reacting badly here, but honestly, almost all of it can be attributed to her freaking out that her bluff completely failed. She's honestly more paying attention to Izutsumi's footsteps and trying to coordinate an opportunity to escape.
And in the end, you see her built-up frustration at being asked if she wants to be a full-blooded elf like 2-3 times in a row.
Yeah, yeah, "the lady doth protest too much," and all. But we know Marcille. We know that she's a lot more embarrassed and horrendously unconvincing when she's being prodded about something she's actually self-conscious about.
Moving onto the flipside of things, it might seem weird that she "pretends" to be a full elf around other races, but it's not really that strange if you think about it. Again, people are weird about her being infertile or whatever, and a lots of them don't even know much about what sets half-elves apart from everyone else. I mean, look at how uncomfortable Laios is just asking her about it
and look at how exasperated and resigned she looks
And like... she's right. Where would that come up in normal conversation? Why would she go out of her way to tell them? She's functionally a normal elf to other races anyway -- got the ears, the abnormally long "childhood", and the huge mana capacity. Unless it's directly relevant or important for people to know, I don't think it's all that strange or indicative of insecurity that she prefers not to bother with it.
(This combined with her sense of being an "outsider" to elf culture also explains why she thinks elf superiority is embarrassing. She sees the way elves treat short-lived races from the "outsider" perspective nonetheless, and thinks it's obnoxious; especially more so because she usually has to play the elf around short-lived races and deal with the reputation of arrogance that elves have built up.)
The sad thing is, this all means that... she doesn't actually fit in anywhere. She doesn't like going out West much because of how elves treat her. But she's also an outsider in the continents she was born in, treated like this exotic long-lived alien choosing to live among short-lived races for some reason. She is always an outsider, the Other, no matter where she goes. Add in the fact that she'll live longer than literally anyone she knows, and it's honestly kind of heartbreaking.
And I think that's the crux of it. Marcille really doesn't act like she's at all self-conscious about being a half-elf because of any feelings of inferiority or being half-made or whatever. She considers herself a perfectly legitimate being and might even, in some ways, consider herself superior to normal elves because she's not blind with elf supremacy or whatever. (And whatever "elven biases" she displays, all of them are born more out of the fact that she's kind of bad at conceptualizing how other races age and mature compared to herself, not that she actually considers herself better or more mature simply for being an elf.)
I think that whatever self-consciousness Marcille has about being a half-elf is, instead, related to terror and loneliness. The reminder that it ensures she'll never truly belong anywhere for the rest of her very long life. The reminder that, in truth, even she's not actually sure how old she is by other races' standards (hence the discomfort when asked how old she is). She doesn't want to not be a half elf, or be a full elf or full tall-man-- in her ideal world, she's still a half-elf. She just gets to live out her life at the same pace with the people she loves and doesn't have to say goodbye again and again and again until she dies.
and one last very important panel, right after Mithrun tells her that all her desires would be devoured
In her ideal world, she's still a half-elf and reality magically starts marching at her pace. But failing that, the second best thing is that she's still a half-elf-- but one who is able to accept reality and let go of her fear.
(But the rest of the story pans out the way it does because, to Marcille, taking reality apart and reshaping it was less scary than simply and fully reconciling with it.)

sorry i'm going insane. the post i just reblogged is making me fucking crazy. the symbolism. the fact that druvis is the only person seated next to vertin, potentially foreshadowing the events of chapter 4 where she is the catalyst for so much. schneider looking at vertin but not being next to her. sonetto moving to comfort sotheby indicating her slowly developing desire to connect more with the outside world where before she would have sat quietly with vertin the whole time. vertin sitting alone. the spacing between people.
and then fucking!!! schneider sitting with her sister. comforting her. NOT seeking comfort even though her sister is older. one of marian's last acts is to PRAY and instead of praying with her or indicating that she even feels a need to, she comforts her. schneider's whole existence seems to have been built around self reliance - she doesn't feel like she can rely on god like her family does, clearly she doesn't think she can rely on marian even if we don't know whether that's because she doesn't want to let herself or because she doesn't think marian can comfort her or because she doesn't think she NEEDS comfort, she runs a fucking MAFIA!!!! marian doesn't seem to really have the same awareness of what schneider does so her family can't be involved, schneider is doing this on her own, if she can't believe in god she can at least believe in herself, her own ability to take care of herself and her people even if whatever god may exist will not take care of them. she has faith in herself but not in god. what does that say about her? what does it say about her family and her history that she would rather shoulder the pain of what's happening to her alone the entire time than receive comfort from anyone, even her older sister!!!!! how old is she!!!!!! there are references to her being multiple ages but for all of that marian looks like she's maybe 18 or 19, old enough to be considered ready for some things but not old enough to be confident. schneider looks younger than vertin. yeah she DRESSES older but when you run a mafia you kind of fucking have to, when you're tiny and a girl in the fucking 1920s to get any kind of credibility you have to dress grown up. what if she's like fucking 14 or something!!!!! she's playing grown up games and running stuff and getting shot and bleeding to death and DYING in the storm and flirting with vertin. what if she does that to feel grown up. yes i think she genuinely likes her i would never deny that i ship them so hard but!!!! she honestly comes off like she's acting older than she is. they're fucking BABIES. even if you go with the idea that schneider is like 18 that's still insanely young to be doing what she's doing. girl you are a TEENAGER she shouldn't even be at the club she should be at SCHOOL !!!!!! but of course in the 20s as a poor girl getting any kind of productive education is still extraordinarily difficult. how much time has she actually spent doing normal teenager things. even if she's 18 she still runs a fucking mafia, that doesn't happen overnight, she had to WORK to get to that point. and how much does her family even know!!! like i said it seems like marian doesn't know much of anything about what's going on. i've interpreted what happens as forget me not taking her from whatever normal life she had to hold something over schneider. she is normal!!! of course schneider can't rely on her for comfort!!! she's NORMAL!!!! and our girl in red is NOT!!!!!! and she's DYING the WHOLE TIME!!!!! and she still acts like everything is fine right up until her last moments. she is breaking my heart!!!!!!!
sorry i'm insane about her. i'm crazy. she lives in my brain (literally) so i have THOUGHTS on her

So
Little Nightmares III, huh???
I was trying to avoid being excited about it because no solid release date and 2024 could be a few months from now or a year from now and Idk how long I can handle being so fuckin hyped for this game YEEHAW
BUT I CAN'T, I KEEP THINKING ABT THE GAME AAHAHHGAGA
so here are my thoughts, if you wanted to know
FIRST OF ALL, i am so glad that after we saw LTNM II we thought it'd be co-op but it was just an AI, that we finally get co-op! AND ONLINE TOO, i spent the first day worried it'd be shared screen same room situation since i wasn't trying to get my hopes up but then I realised I can just.. google it.. AND IT IS!!! ONLINE!! IDK WHO I AM GONNA PLAY IT W FIRST AAAAAAAA
anyways, you can definitely tell it's a new studio working on this game, the world feels mostly the same but the character designs themselves are definitely stylistically similar, but not the same. With Six especially, the MC designs were very simplistic and realistic but used colour (or for Mono, a single design quirk being the bag) to stand out against their backgrounds and against the enemies which are largely neutral colours. But these new ones feel... "over designed"? On their own they definitely aren't, but in comparison to Mono, Six, Seven, and even NPCs like the flashlight girl, they have a lot more going on (especially the little wrench kid, Idk which one is Alone and which one is Low yet btw OOP)
Despite it being a new studio and you can tell, new puzzles and environments, they're still doing their best to have the OGs vibes and whatnot to feel familiar, namely in the trailer they bring back the fuses, and the additional gameplay video there's a short scene with an environment with all the shelves you can find in LTNM 1s gnome section (the one with the cart that is affected by the Maws swaying).
But regardless, it still feels different enough my brain is still nervous about it. I also feel In A Way about Tarsier having LTNM II explode and their franchise getting the attention it deserves, only to have it stuck with Bandai and now it's going to likely explode again and they aren't involved. Idk how anyone on that team feels about it, but if it were me omg.
Also the only boss we've seen so far (i hope they add more and i def want some to be a surprise so im not gonna assume this is the only one for now) feels... out of place? it has the design qualities of a LTNM boss, but the size of it makes it more of a spectacle than a warped/corruption of an adult. All the previous bosses fit in their environment, we are the small ones and they are scaled to the world around them. This is the first time, outside monster Six who imo is a bit of an outlier anyways due to her circumstances, we're getting a boss who is this huge and doesn't even fit their own environment. I hope we get a lore reason for this in some way, because currently the boss doesn't have the same vibe as the others and it's throwing me off a bit. Don't get me wrong, it'll be terrifying, but looking at the picture as a whole they are sort of out of place for me rn. I don't hate the bitch either, I'm not gonna be like omg get rid of it or change it, but it does strike me as odd seeing it for now.
And yes the tall man is too tall for a lot of things, but he's not THAT big. He's more like yer tall guy who hits his head off doorways, which happens irl anyways LMAO
Little Nightmares primarily tries to capture the feeling of being a small child and how everything is big and scary, but a doll that huge is out of the realm of reality set up for us already. It's gone from scary corrupted animal to godzilla, if that makes sense.
OH AND THE MIRRORS ARE VERY LTNM COMICS OF THEM TEE HEE < 3

Questions? Do you need more questions? Because if you need more questions I can give you more questions. How about 7 & 12?
7. Which character do you think is the most similar to c!Dream?
Like the man cc!Dream himself, I have to say c!Techno. I think they have similar ideals, and in similar circumstances, preeeetty similar ways of going about those ideals--c!Dream has a lot more narrative baggage because of the L'manburg Mythos and he doesn't go through c!Techno's arc, but c'mon they worked together to blow a nation up to bedrock like they're both pretty damn willing to do some pretty damn crazy stuff. Obviously c!Dream is very much willing to do worse and is morally a hell of a lot more dubious, but in terms of how the rest of the server treats them, the fear that governs a lot of their actions, the motivations and ideals behind their actions, etc, i'd say that they're quite similar
(From a different perspective, looking at the finale, I kinda want to throw a c!Tommy in the ring? Obviously these two characters are very, very different in a lot of fundamental ways which leads to their initial conflicts and they're never Not going to grate at each other...but in terms of the narrative that c!Wilbur wrote, in terms of what they meant In The Story, in terms of that similar desire for a server where they could just exist in peace, yeah. there certainly are similarities there. and no one really inhabits the L'manburg Narrative in the same way that these two do as its hero and villain, because the lmanburg mythos was the tommy-and-dream-show that ended up dominating so much of what the story became..anyway. Not really my answer for most similar, but they're well. You know. c!Tommy and c!Dream, the significance can't really be overstated.)
12. What do you think c!Dream’s limbo/s would have been like?
Hmmm i don't have the strongest opinions on this tbh! Limbos have always been tricky for me. The inside of the prison/main cell is always good, but for an answer that's not that...something to emphasize the fear and paranoia that followed him everywhere, the server that was his home that became the very thing he was afraid of, the way that he couldn't stop looking over his shoulder waiting because everyone wanted him dead? i can't think of what, exactly though. Going everywhere and feeling eyes on his back. Hearing footsteps but unable to see their source, arrows whistling just past his ear, explosions making the ground under his feet crumble, clanking armor. If he stops and hides anywhere then they only get closer. His only choice is to keep running.
