THE REDOUBTABLES by Premee Mohamed (2020) (link) - tw: death
No one saw it happen.
Scratch that: no witnesses were left. So you end up having to picture it, based on the bone-dry descriptions in what we’ll all just agree to call the Pearce Papers, to avoid any messy litigation and keep me out of trouble with my editor.
THE EGG by Andy Weir (2009) (link) - tw: death, religion
“Every time you victimized someone,” I said, “you were victimizing yourself. Every act of kindness you’ve done, you’ve done to yourself. Every happy and sad moment ever experienced by any human was, or will be, experienced by you."

Ascending cloud from Redoubt Volcano from an eruption on April 21, 1990. The mushroom-shaped plume rose from avalanches of hot debris (pyroclastic flows) that cascaded down the north flank of the volcano.

Pali: Cliopher is a terrible jailer of my friend Fitzroy
Me: No Pali, he is a staff person at the prison who is doing ‘repairs’ as he removes all the bars and hinges

The “General Washington did not allow me to wield a rifle and go punch Lord Father in the face, instead he gave me a snare drum and a non-combatant uniform” look. Also the too big uniform because he walked into the marquee tent once after gaining several inches in a couple nights (the growing boy,,,), so in case he had the sheer audacity to grow more…

You know what I love is this style of early-ish 20th century butch horsewoman fashion. And I think we should bring it back.

i’m halfway through “the redoubtable pali avramapul” and two things are just so funny to me:
1. that in the scene where pali is meeting with kip and ludvic she’s just spitting mad thinking about how they’re fitzroy’s jailers, they’re just government agents she needs to rescue him from, etc. while rewind to “the return of fitzroy angursell” and tor’s just like. oh kip, the guy who kept me sane all these years. yeah, kip, the guy who knows all about how salt is good for people’s health. kip, my bff who made me read his 900 page plan on how to make the world a better place (and he’s so right and it was worth reading even if it was 900 pages!). like. she just does not have the context hjkglskls
2. in that same scene she’s clearly left feeling still at odds with them, but when you read the scene from kip’s perspective in “the hands of the emperor” he’s just excited to be in the presence of one of the red company and thinks it goes as well as it could have. clearly did not get the same takeaways from that meeting, they’re going to need a follow-up email

The parallels between cliopher in "at the feet of the sun" and Pali in the Redoubtable pali avramapul".
The way they both use the phrase "familiar unfamiliar". Both I. Reference to Fitzroy among other things.
The similar but mirror image ways they both reacted to (spoilers) the information that Fitzroy and the emperor are the same person.
They way they each start with knowing one side of him before understanding the truth.
The way that Pali and cliopher are both in love with different parts of the same man, but then kip goes on to love and partner with the whole Fitzroy. To help him find that whole, but Pali explodes that in her shock at understanding. She immediately assumes that the man she loved isn't in there anymore and asks him if all he is is the emperor.
It's like seeing peices of what kip could have been. I'll have to reread at the feet of the sun and compare the alternate reality of kip to her.
Fuck
The way kips cousin recognizes their similarities, but cliopher can't see past the ways she keeps hurting Fitzroy.
These books make me a little insae
