god I am such a sucker for ridiculously devoted fictional friend groups. they drive each other up the wall. they want to kill each other. they’ll die for each other. they share a soul. they share half a braincell. their story might be tragic. it might not be. they’re all a little in love with each other.

If you liked the All Our Hidden Gifts trilogy by Caroline O’Donoghue, try The Scapegracers series by HA Clarke
They both include:
covens of teenage witches, some of whom are queer
said covens using their magic to take down the patriarchy
quirky little shops where they get help with their magic

The Feast Makers by H.A. Clarke
One of my most awaited books of the year! Even though it actually comes out in 2024 (Thank you to Netgalley for the arc!)
I adored the first two books, and this conclusion to the series truly delivers
The prose is incredibly distinctive, being in Sideways' head is always exhilarating
The characters have varied motivations, and the web of relationships between them really echoes the themes of found family, and belonging, and sets the stage for the importance of fighting for your community
This series never shies away from violence and ugliness yet still manages to avoid pointless drama
The magic has an organic and gritty feel that I adore
Truly my only negative comment is that the very end felt a bit rushed, I think it could have used an extra chapter or two to have a bit more falling action
I just want to reread the whole series from the start now xD
9/10

Third book in the Scapegracers trilogy (releases 3/26)
Sideways's magic has been restored & their hoping to get through the rest of senior year with their coven (and perhaps avoid confronting what will come after), but the broader witch community convenes to put Madeline on trial for stealing another witch's magic, Sideways knows they have to get involved
Meanwhile, more witch hunters are also gathering in Sycamore Gorge for a memorial and tensions begin to come to a head
Explores justice, punishment, and redemption–how should Madeline be punished for crimes? And who gets to decide?
The coven must also grapple with their end imminent separation at the end of high school as the four of them try to figure out their future paths in life
At the same time, Sideways navigates a growing romance with one of their coven members
Also some great twists that add stakes/recontextualize things we thought we knew
Fierce & queer & snarky & complex
Nonbinary butch lesbian main character, Chinese American bi love interesting, Black sapphic side character, nonbinary side character, femme lesbian side character

Best Books Read in August 2023
A recap of the best books I read each month in 2023.
The Feastmakers by HA Clarke
I was incredibly lucky to get an ARC of the final book in The Scapegracers and I was absolutely delighted reading this book. The emotion, the relationships, the themes. . .I will be buying my hardcover copy when it is released!!
They Called Us Enemy by George Takei
I don't read many memoirs, but I'm really glad I read this one. It was so thoughtful and respectful of the author's memory, as well as his family's, and his current emotions. Highly recommend.
Uprooted by Naomi Novik
I started this book years ago now and couldn't get into it. I tried the audiobook this time around and was captivated! I am slowly working my way through Novik's work now and I am excited to read more from her!!
