And here is my second animation in Procreate Dreams! This time it’s a little Moomin scene.
This started off simply as a test to see if Dreams could do multi-plane camera effects, but it quickly got out of hand and took me WAY longer than I thought it would.
The problem was that in order to have the closeup shot look decent, i had to have an extremely large canvas and had to paint the background with much more detail than I normally would. In addition, it still needed to be able to fit the much smaller resolution insert of the window opening. I’ve never had to paint a scene in 4K resolution before and that presented a lot of challenges for my poor outdated iPad. Getting the right amount of detail and aligning the two layers was much more trouble than I anticipated and resulted in a lot of trial and error.
Getting each layer of the scene to move at the correct speed to make the parallax effect work also took a lot of work. And of course animating Moomin opening the window and Snufkin playing the harmonica added to the time needed to complete the scene. Honestly I didn’t think this simple scene would take me close to a month to complete.
For those curious, using the groups feature in Procreate Dreams was a lifesaver. Once I animated Moomin opening the window I was able to just group it together with the house layer and then scale both at the same time. The same went for Snufkin on the bridge. Being able to link those layers together into one layer made adjusting the parallax scrolling much easier to deal with. I really love how much groups help tidy up your timeline.
The song Snufkin is playing is a 90’s Moomin harmonica cover by Bat-Hen Zarfati.

HOW DO YOU. HOW DO YOU COLOUR SO SCRUMPTIOUSLY. AND HOW ARE YOUR POSES AND EXPRESSIONS SO WHAAAA. AND LIKE WHOOOAOAOAA.
oh yay! i'm glad you like the way i color (even if it's, extremely barebones)
well here's my color process, I usually just rely on flat colors with some funny little effects to make it look kinda faded. (Ft. Snufkin)

My Melody of Moominvalley thoughts under the cut because spoilers:
- Overall visually stunning game with so much potential. Especially on Hattifattener Island I was blown away by the love and care put into the scenery
- Story was simple but effective, as expected. My favourite bit was The Groke putting the forest fire out and being accepted by the little critters, very cute
- Snufkin's interactions with all the characters made my life
- Snorkmaiden deserved to have more than one side quest you can skip. Why does Snork have more than her? She's a main character and I'm genuinely confused. She's also hidden in a tree?? Skull emoji
- Sniff. Was. Amazing. And him giving Snufkin the hemulen toy was adorable. Cedric having speech boxes was adorable. Adorable.
- Gameplay was good! Once I got the hang of it I found it vv satisfying and calming to play.
- No post game at all was kind of expected, but to not be able to go back into the map post-game to complete the rest of the tasks and freely travel around, like a "sandbox" type thing, was a bit disappointing. I skipped some side quests thinking I could do them later lolol (I still can, I just don't want to play through the story again, might be a glitch on my end)
- I could only see myself using the sprint feature, and getting more stamina with the Muskrat, if I was speedrunning. There was only one instance where I felt the need to sprint to complete the level lol
- Even though this is probably a standalone release, it would be really fun to have add on quests in the future, which expand on the game and introduce more side characters. This would be a good opportunity to tell more original stories and give unpopular characters their flowers!! And I could trust the current team to do the characters justice. A girl can dream :')

Animation Brief 01 - Week 2 - Parallax Background
Above: Snufkin just chillin
Putting together a full parallaxed background was the biggest individual step in our "World Building" brief, which is why I kept putting it off. I was told by Yvonne that the work had to be produced physically before being digitally composited, for someone who hates painting this was bad news.
I guess like always, the first step was research and gathering reference. I chose Tove Jansson as my artist-to-emulate which proved a bit of a headache in itself. Jansson was prolific and diverse, working with different styles in different mediums regularly in her seven decades long career. A lot of my favourite works of hers are simple black ink on white paper illustrations. But mimicking that style would've gone against the spirit of the project.
I decided to buy a beginners set of gouache paint for a tenner and try to emulate her painted work, the likes of which can be seen on the covers for her children's books. I'd never used gouache before so I don't really know what I was thinking, other than that I knew I was sick of acrylic. Anyway, the first step was a sketch.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Above: Yeah not much going on...
Honestly looking back on this I probably should have spent more time drafting a good composition and actually thinking through the shot I was intending to make. It's not that I didn't give it any thought, just that when you're on a tight schedule and commit to an idea, you're stuck with it. The longer I worked on this project the less I liked it, a bit more foresight at the beginning could've helped prevent that. Ah well.
The composition I went with was a combination of a couple of my landscape sketches. I decided with my "mini-me" limited to being shot from the shoulder up, a horizontal parallax would work best. Basically a simple side-scrolling shot, like holding a camera out a car window. I took the forest backdrop from Cratloe Woods, the classic Irish dry-stone wall from the farm, and I threw in some road signs (and Snufkin) for a bit of fun. The only problem was now I had to paint it...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Above: A real Artíst's palette...
I had no idea how to use gouache. I even used the regular ass paper from my sketchook which was probably a mistake considering the number the water did on it. I started out dampening the paper a bit before going over the major areas with a wash of an approximate colour. You can really tell I worked left to right on the wall because it gets slightly less shitting as your eyes pan across it. The wall was great fun in general, basically just laying down shadows, darkening the crevices and building up the tone. I think I overworked it looking back, although that's true for the painting in general.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Above: Cameos
Don't have much to say about these sketches, I was working fast and trying to have fun with them while keeping in Jansson's style. Also if it's not obvious I take all these photos at night when there's no natural light cause I'm stupid...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Above: Ignore the giant pile of rubbish, I cleaned it up after I promise
At first I really wasn't happy with the treeline in my first painting so I tested out some ideas on another sheet. I liked how it turned out, and I was thinking of incorporating it into the animation, but as the trees are the furthest element in the composition, they will move the least in the parallax shot, making it a bit infeasible. I did reuse the bushes as a foreground element though.
The next step was a tedious one, scan the water-warped paintings on my shitty scanner, disassemble them in Photoshop and stitch the edges as to make them tileable. Honestly I actually enjoy this kind of tedious Photoshop work, I just hated my painting and the shot in general so having to look at them over and over wasn't exactly fun.
Anyway, having made liberal use of the offset filter in Photoshop I had all the layers cut and tileable and ready to import into After Effects. I kind of suck at After Effects so this took longer than it should have. I tried to create the parallax effect in an old school manner by parenting all the layers together and setting a keyframe on their position, and adjusting their start position individually to control the speed at which each layer scrolled. Sounds easy.
I wasn't. Apparently I can't parent properly cause it was anarchy trying to control the speed of the individual layers. Eventually I just watched a Youtube tutorial and used that guy's method, creating a new camera and parenting everything to a null object, then moving the individual layers back in z-space to create the parallax effect as the camera pans.
I'm tired as I write this and I'm unsure how intelligible it is. Here's the horses mouth explaining things if you want to watch for yourselves:
youtube
The worst part is after all that it's still just a rough composite. Even beyond the obvious absence of my mini-me, there's a lot of problems in regards to the speed of the individual layers, the foreground elements look more like they're moving on a treadmill than receding in space. A particular cardinal sin I committed was not matching the speed of the grounded elements to the ground on which they're well, grounded.
Anyway I can fix all that later, I'm just sick of looking at it for now.

I hate it when I dream about seeing an amazing vid on YouTube then waking up and realizing it wasn't real 😭😭😭
Last night I had a dream about a joxmym animatic and it was so dramatic and beautiful and I think it almost made me cry????? It was so soft and there were a lot of flowers and the art style was so beautiful ahhdksgfjshfkskd. The vibes of the song was a mix of Lana del ray and the oh hellos (my favs!!), And the ending was so bittersweet, I think it was snufkin being abandoned in the basket??? And there were even sound effect like it was a movie, istg it was amazing

I am becoming dangerously obsessed with The Moomins.
In which I explore my deeply ingrained weakness for furry media, and why a weird kids series that comes from a queer, poly, anti fascist place speaks to me deeply.
Tumblr media
The moomins were always something I was aware of. I saw a couple of episodes of the 90s show when I was a kid, and we had one of the books in the house when I was a kid, but I never read it. Not sure why, but discussing it with my mum she said she never liked the moomins much.
A while ago my roomate introduced me to Comet in Moominland, the 90s movie that is a prequel to the TV series, and based on the first full length moomin book. It was a beautiful and harrowing movie about the moomins dealing with the knowledge that a comet is going to hit the earth, and having to deal with an apocalypse of biblical proportions.
Tumblr media
After that, my partner and I decided to watch the 90s anime that follows on from the movie. It's cute and charming, it's wholesome and positive. It is depicting the childhood you maybe wish you had, with good friends and positive role models. I also picked up some of the books, those are my own copies in the picture.
Now throughout my life, I have always been a sucker for furry media. Being a furry is essentially my favorite thing and defines a lot of my identity. Most of my favourite media is furry media, be it core fandom, or wider furry adjacent media. On the surface, Moomin is obviously furry media, it deals with creatures having adventures, but I believe the furry connection goes deeper.
I found this video from youtube channel Culturally F'd, that gives a queer, poly, anti fascist reading of the moomins.
youtube
The video basically alleges that the Moomin's creator, Tove Jasson, was queer and for much of her life was in what we would now call a poly relationship with a man and a woman at the same time. It also notes how the moomins first appeared in a left wing magazine, hence the anti fascist element. If you want an example of cottagecore media without a hint of fascism, the moomins is probably a good place to look. It's not apolitical of course. There is that one post that is doing the rounds like "I only want apolitical media, like studio ghibli and the moomins" which is very funny and has never left my head.
While the text may not be explicitly queer, you could call Moomintroll textually "In love" with Snufkin, as well as his girlfriend, it's not like they openly date, but I have verified the things that video says about the author with other sources and it seems to be true. It does seem like the moomins comes from a queer, poly worldview, and now I have realised that, I think that is when I crossed the line from interest to obsession. That is how my life works, I tend to become obsessed with a specific piece of furry media for a year or so, hyperfixate on it as much as I can, then I move on but can always engage with furry fan work for it.
I think a lot of the appeal of furry stuff is explored in this awesome video from Patricia Taxxon. It argues that a lot of the appeal of being a furry lies in "The symbolic, the sensory, and the autistic" and that a lot of furries also have other intersecting identities that may have made you feel simultaneously human and inhuman. I guess what I am trying to say here is that I feel the moomins are very deeply furry media in a way that a lot of mainstream "furry" media isn't. Don't get me wrong, I still love a lot of mainstream furry stuff, but I think the true appeal for me is using symbolism effectively. Using your funny little animal creatures to explore things about the world and your life.
The moomins come from a genuinely weird, non corporate place. I would maybe even say if the author were still around today, we would probably consider her a furry. It may be a pleasant, pastoral, almost childish setting, but it deals with all aspects of childhood, from scary or dangerous events you don't understand, to interpersonal conflict, to even stuff as simple as getting sick. It's speaking to me on a level that not many things have before, with its depiction of subtextual, yet healthy and real feeling poly relationships, and real classical feeling adventures and family dynamics. This isn't a word I use much but it's wholesome, yet deep. I know I am only scratching the surface of the moomins and I can't believe it has taken me this long to get into them. I know this is probably fairly incoherent and it is mainly just my initial thoughts on what I have been getting into for the past month or so. I will probably post about it more going forward but just wanted to say something.

Video
i thought “what if snufkin’s pupils (/irises?) expanded when he sees moomintroll like that fuzzy felt golden tail scene” so i tried to whip up something to that effect quickly just using the bulge effect and oh my god i cant stop laughing it looks so goofy 😭🤣🤣

Played the Snufkin: Melody of Moominvalley demo
Tumblr media
teehee will the real Snufkin please stand up??
Tumblr media Tumblr media
First of all the art and music are so gorgeous. The watercolor effect and paper texture are enchanting. I felt soothed just watching the intro. It's very moomin-y and made me remember how I felt when I first discovered the books. When you walk through puddles, there's the sound of splashing water, and when you cross a log bridge, it sounds like hollow wood. Ideal vibe.
I did try *cough* to jump off the cliffs and stuff... but no, you can't kill yourself in this game, bahahaha. Unsurprising but Idk I've played Sims too long and "how can I kill everyone" has become my modus operandi. Not even Moomins are safe.
You pretty much just use space bar, S, and A, so playing was easy. I encountered some trouble when jumping at times, but Idk if that was jumps being glitchy or just me still getting the hang of it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Snufkin in this is freakishly strong. Able to carry rocks while jumping across a rushing river and push a giant boulder around. Superstrength!! But it is a lot of fun, really, running and jumping everywhere, climbing things... I got stuck at one point where you have to climb behind a waterfall, because I didn't think you could climb horizontally!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now this game stars Snufkin, but don't be fooled, it's really a Snufkin roast. You watch Teety-woo (who is leading the tutorial basically) follow Snufkin around getting ignored for ages x'D and he's so complimentary the whole time that it morphs into an insult. The rest of the time, in the name of helping, he does a lot of nothing and you stop feeling bad about ignoring him bahahahaha.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Your "mighty" harmonica x'D has the ability to calm and charm other creatures and make them fall in love with you. I don't care what anyone says, I love this whole music therapy angle. I also like finding inspiration in random bushes. It WAS a bit weird to use the harmonica on this Creep only so he could give me a boost up the cliff lol what was wrong with stacking rocks?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But the harmonica's best use is DEFINITELY hypnotizing birds and then launching them at a target. Who need guns when you have birds?? Seriously this was way too much fun, who knew Looney Tunes humor would be this amusing to me as a full grown adult :P
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You get quests, like "rescue all the baby birds." But whenever you feel like it you can fuck off and go fishing for a while. Sorry mama! I didn't notice any game-related effect from it, like catching actual fish. So idk if that's the way it's meant to be, for relaxing, or if I'm just stupid.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I was a little confused when I got like three quests and didn't see how I'd made any progress on any of them. Then all of a sudden the mama bird, who says "woo" when she's sad and "teety" when she's happy, led to the completion of the "Find a name" quest. And I love Teety-woo praising the existential beauty of his own name, and then fucking off to pay some bills. The great Snufkin who?? I've got responsibilities!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oh no... signs! Oh no... a park! Being asked to look after it is pretty funny! But the ensuing complete and total property destruction is even funnier!
Not even kidding, Snufkin demolishes this park. It was really fun! This game isn't hard, but for someone who doesn't play games, it wasn't too mindlessly simple for me either. I enjoyed dodging the park keepers, launching birds at their heads, and yeeting signs into oblivion.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And we end with the discovery that Moominvalley has dried up and Moomintroll is nowhere to be found! An excellent prologue. I'm definitely looking forward to this game. I like the idea of a game that has both relaxing elements and more energetic ones without being too terribly kiddie (of course it's perfect for kids, I'm just saying, as an adult, I wasn't bored), as well as one that is whimsical and silly without losing emotional depth, with manageable, personal stakes. The demo definitely didn't take me very long to get through and I have no idea how long the full game will be. But long or short, the story seems promising.

This comic is the only thing keeping this app on my phone but I think I'll have to let go of both Tumblr and this comic because I've noticed that I get sort of anxiety attacks thinking of Tumblr, and moomins, and this comic. Like my heartbeat goes faster, I feel my eyes start to water, and I feel a panic about something I can't even pin down, but it's only when I think of Tumblr, or this comic. I want to finish this, I want to push through and pull up my bootstraps but I just don't think I can anymore. The suicidal thoughts have been more frequent, and while this used to be the thing to make me feel better, it has the complete opposite effect now. This might be a shock, like the person who writes snufkin to be in a constant state of wanting to die and turns barbie's careers into a bid for attention is fucked in the head, what a twist /s
The worst thing is that I can't write anything else🥴
It'd be fine if I could just be like "bye bitch" and pull a lizzo n fly away to write my own shit but like I cannot do that, and every time I do it's literally actual dogshit, like my immortal levels of bad-
I have so much I want to write but I don't feel good about this anymore, I feel sick and I feel anxious.
If this is the last post you ever see from this blog, you know what happened. I fucking quit. Before anything could even happen. It never began, it never ended, and it was wholly unsatisfying.

Note
Moomin Valley has that exact same idyllic vibe as the Shire that makes me want to move there. side note: I think the One Ring would corrupt Snufkin and they'd have to push him into the volcano
Everyone thinks snufkin with his detachment from physical possessions is a good candidate for ring bearer but he ends up getting corrupted even harder for it. Truth is Sniff is the perfect candidate and the ring's effects are barely noticeable to him.
He doesn't want to throw the ring in at first but you're like "hey man we've got pancakes and gold coins and stuff if you cast it into the fire" and he's like "oh worm? done ❤️"

@somnolent-snufkin (i can’t comment sorry) i usually increase the brilliance & exposure since that seems to make it easier to see, i think i’ve tried making it sharper but i don’t rlly like the effect it can have on the lines when it’s too sharp, i just tried increasing it by a bit though and i think it helps so thank you! x

tumblr ate the ask but.
@sludgemetalsnufkin asked a question:
For the ask meme, 19, 29, 20, and 22 because I'm selfishly curious about it because I hate titling fics and you always come up with such beautiful, often botanically-themed titles and I'm always like :U. 37 if you're comfortable with answering it, same for 63 regarding A&A so far. Also 74 and 75. I'm nosey [chinhands]
19. Do you enjoy creating OCs or do you prefer to stick solely to canon characters?
I do enjoy creating OCs, but I prefer writing canon characters. I think it's really fun to analyze existing works and build an understanding of a character from there. Put this guy in a situation.
20. Do you prefer writing AUs or canon fics?
I like both, but I do enjoy an AU. Mostly because I enjoy contemporary political commentary, and so having textual interactions with modern institutions makes that plain and easy.
22. Do you title your fics before, during, or after the writing process?  How do you come up with titles?
During, very occasionally after. Usually I just have a placeholder title which is either just a simple description or a little joke. Once I know more about the piece, its tone and themes and plot, I can figure out what to aim for in a title. I like using floriography (the Victorian language of flowers), and I have a spreadsheet (surprising no one) of different flowers and their meanings. I also have an illustrated book on floriography that I can pull from if my spreadsheet is insufficient. In a similar vein, chapter titles are usually based on a small detail that acts as a microcosm of the whole chapter. "Lashon Hora" after a few lines of gossip but also about harsh truths better left unsaid as a whole. "12 fluid ounces" about the limited caffeine intake during pregnancy but also about all the limitations and the ways Snufkin is now missing out in participating in the world the way he used to.
29. What’s something about your writing that you’re proud of?
jfdksla i think i can write effective punchy lines — the end of a chapter, a revelation, an impactful dialogue. there are good emotional little moments
37. What fic has been the hardest for you to write?
hardest to write is a&a, specifically the sex scenes. they've taken (and are taking lol) ages to get through, just because i don't have the practice in them
63. What was the hardest part of writing [acacia & asphodel]?
I've definitely found the sex scenes the hardest to write. A lot of coordination, making sure everything logically makes sense. It's also just like a lot of little moments that I have to get the order and pacing right so it is logical and thematically relevant. also lso these are the first sex scenes I've written, so naturally it's just something I'm not very practiced at.
74. Do you have a fic you wish got a bit more love?
Eh, I don't like to think too much in that vein. I've tried a lot to make myself content knowing that I'm writing niche stuff and that with that comes a small audience.  Almost all of my favorite things I've written have gotten well under a thousand hits. It's just how it goes.
75. Is there a particular fic that readers gravitated towards that you didn’t expect?
"Midnight Rendezvous" and "Moonlit Stroll" definitely both got more attention than I expected (and tbh more than I think they deserve jfadskl). I guess it's not so unexpected that it would be these fics out of my library, given that I wrote them in 2020 and they are the most fluffy of what I've done. But they got a lot more hits than I anticipated, especially since I only had like one or two fics written already and had no reputation.
