My gift for @thenewbuzwuzz for donating to Fandom Trumps Hate 2024. It was a blast to work on and such a joy to do a painting for my fav of the M9 as my first fanart in the Critical Role fandom.
Thanks again for hosting such an awesome event @fandomtrumpshate
Image description and nerd notes under the cute:
Image description: Water color painting of Caduceus Clay casting spiritual guardians. Caduceus is a firbolg with light gray fur and a bright pink mohawk. His armor is a teal green with pink lichen growing on it. He holds a staff with a crystal and from it swirls of green and pink move around him releasing beetles.
Lichen on Cad's armor is inspired by these species: Cryptothecia rubrocinta and Diabaeis baemyces. Beetle design inspired by Carrion beetles.

tag 9 people to get to know better
Tagged by @coraniaid. Lots of cheating answers here!
3 ships: Faith x Buffy from BTVS (Fuffy!!) I'm pretty focused. (I'll ignore other Eliza Dushku characters, and uh, that leaves, to a much much MUCH lesser extent...) Wil x Vivian (from Saving Face) and Lucy x Amy (from D.E.B.S.) But I don't even know the ship names for those 2 so you can see how much of my brain they are taking up.
First ever ship: I think Mulder x Scully from X-Files was probably my first ever ship. (Although I did not know the term MSR and was not aware of fandom online.) I wasn't super invested, personally they don't really DO IT for me, but I was rooting for them to get together. One of these days I'll do a proper watch / rewatch. (I stopped watching regularly once I went to college.)
Last song: (double cheating album answer) Bad Bunny's new album Nadie Sabe Lo Que Va a Pasar Manana. AND the soundtrack from the Out of Sight movie.
Last movie: Ouijia: Origin of Evil. (Last background movie rewatch: House on Haunted Hill, the 1999 version)
Currently reading: Just started the Bring It On: The Complete Story of the Cheerleading Movie That Changed, Like, Everything (No Seriously) book, by Kase Wickman. (JFC that's a title)
Currently watching: Bob's Burgers for fun (yay! Louise is my favorite), and just finished The Fall of the House of Usher (this was just OK for me, I much prefer Midnight Mass and the two Hauntings). I think Chucky will be next! (gotta get caught up on season two)
Currently consuming: Shrimp spring rolls and a Boston cream donut.
Currently craving: Halloween chocolate candy. And marshmallow peanuts. And candy corn.
Thanks this was fun. I'm having a rough October and this helped.

The Herald's position on AI-generated text and images
We've occasionally linked outputs of things like predictive text engines in the past, especially back when those were an interesting novelty. Now that pretty much the whole world is using ChatGPT, the time of novelty is past, and it's time to clarify where we stand. A summary of this post will be added to the Herald's FAQ for reference.
As a rule, we will not knowingly link AI-assisted stuff unless it's exceptionally original compared to what we've seen before (for example, an entirely new format) or the human artist/author has modified the generated material in some creative and non-trivial way (for example, by using AI to create a background, which they then heavily modify by hand), or the post has sparked substantial discussion.
If someone posts machine-generated material and doesn't label it as such, we--in all honesty--might not be able to tell. However, if we do find out, especially if there's evidence that little to no human editing went into the finished work, we'll remove the work in question from the Herald if we've already linked it, and we'll avoid linking anything else posted by the same person in the future.
We arrived at this approach because the Herald pretty much exists to promote what fans create and what fans have to say. Large text models are not Buffyverse fans, and if their developers have any opinion on the series, it's not apparent in their work.
On a more serious note, one of the Herald's stated purposes is to encourage fandom members to participate in their community. We want to support people pouring time, effort and love into what they create, expressing and discovering themselves in the process, starting conversations based on their own opinions, and collaborating with actual human beings. The process is crucial; it's part of what builds the community. Sure, AI is efficient in the sense that it can provide something vaguely acceptable faster than humans can. But if efficiency was our goal, none of us would be here taking our sweet time to ruminate over a 20+ year old show.
I bet many of our readers don't need us to explain that there are issues with AI, but are more surprised that we're not taking an even more categorical position against AI. To stay at all relevant and useful, because as a newsletter started in the oughts we are a relic of ages past, the Herald has to make an effort to be open to different forms of fandom participation and keep up to date with new developments. We're well accustomed to linking some things we personally don't like, because our work isn't about each editor's individual opinions. So we're not closing the door to the possibility that these technologies *could* be used for worthwhile creations. In a few more years or maybe even sooner, if the use and regulation of machine learning continues to develop and forms of artistry get more established, we (or future editors of the Herald) might make different decisions about what to include. Or the fad might blow over and AI use in art might become an anecdote of the past, like that era when people put jello in all their cooking.
P.S. We don't always have time to do substantial research as we gather and select links, so if you notice we've linked something that is for sure not human-made, feel free to let us know by sending sunnydaleherald an ask on tumblr or contacting me ([email protected] or a direct message on the webbed site of your choice where you've seen me around). However, we are unlikely to act on such tips without solid proof.
A very happy ritual sacrifice with pie to all who celebrate!

After four nights, looks like I'm going to get released from the hospital today!
I had surgery on Friday to remove and biopsy a mysterious mass on my appendix. The initial examination while I was sedated revealed it to be a cancerous tumor, so they took out the right side of my colon as well to prevent potential cancer spread. This was a scenario that my doctor and I had discussed, but I had definitely hoped the mass was caused by a cyst or some other non-cancerous abnormality.
Thankfully, the doctor thinks this was probably the only tumor, though I'm getting a referral to an oncologist to do further tests.
Surgery recovery has gone well and I'm looking forward to getting back home.
I'm super grateful to the kindness of all my nurses and CNAs and for the support of friends and family. @thenewbuzwuzz in particular, helped me get through that first long, difficult night.

All righty then, 🏆 (What do you wish more authors in your fandom would write about?) and 🤣 (Has a fic ever made your face hurt from laughing so much?) :)
I wish more people would write plotty adventure stories where the focus is on the adventure as much as the ship?  Bonus if it’s an established relationship.  There can never be too many of those!
Lessee... Mahaliem’s “Amnesia!Spike,” several fics by Mr. Monkeybottoms, and “Nicolette Says Jump!” by Kalima.  Actually, now that I think of it.... I wish more people would write humor!

@shittinggold tagged me to do 10 fandoms, 10 characters, 10 tags. I am copying the “fandom” can mean “piece of media” bit as well. Here they are!
(1) Buffy the Vampire Slayer - Buffy Summers (perhaps a surprise) - the legend
(2) Angel the Series - Faith Lehane (yeah kind of a cheat bc I don't like ATS but Faith's arc is amazing and I didn't want to cheat by picking 2 characters for one show) - the icon, the myth, the legend
(3) Hightown - Jackie Quinones (an AU Faith, truly. kinda darker than BTVS / ATS tho)
(4) Bob's Burgers - Louise Belcher (another AU Faith. if Faith had siblings and grew up with love. much lighter than BTVS / ATS obvs.)
(5) A League of Their Own series - Max Chapman (all her scenes are my favorites)
(6) The Good Place - Eleanor Shellstrop (the best Arizona dirtbag)
(7) Happy Endings - Jane Kerkovich Williams (the competitive married blonde)
(8) Abbott Elementary - Ava Coleman (love that she's a prepper)
(9) Ocean's 8 - Debbie Ocean (criminal mastermind! also where is the Debbie x Lou spin-off series?)
(10) Yellowjackets - Taissa Turner (hard to pick just one character but her scene with the rich white lady cements it for me)
Huh, only 3 Faith-y characters, only 1 movie, and only 1 cop. (A coast guard cop is still a cop.) I heartily recommend all of these except Angel the Series (ATS). I only reco you watch the Faith episodes on ATS.
Thank you for tagging me! Happy New Years Eve everyone, even those of you I'm tagging that I don't really know well! Tagging:
@thenewbuzwuzz @beatriceeverytuesday1 (I know you did this on your old blog, thanks for tagging me before!) @faith-thee-slayer @andremichaux @whatisyourchildhoodtrauma @5bi5 @coraniaid @aliceinwondrbra @quillbard @isagrimorie

Call for volunteers
It's that time again! The Sunnydale Herald is looking for at least one new editor.
Being a Herald editor means making one newsletter post a week, which may take roughly 2-4 hours depending on one's level of perfectionism. You don't have to manually scour the internet for Buffyverse links (unless you want to!) -- most of the potential links come to us pre-gathered in one tidy Dreamwidth reading page. You'll also have help with turning the day's selection of links into a formatted list: you can either paste everything into our HTML template that already contains all the formatting tags, or use some alternative tools that will do part of the pasting and sorting for you.
If that's a bigger time investment than you can commit to, consider volunteering as a tumblr reblogger instead! We are looking for two volunteers who'd be willing to spend up to an hour one day a week reblogging new Buffyverse posts to the blog we use for tumblr link gathering, @sunnydale-digest.
Come join us if you like to support a variety of viewpoints and communities and do your part to help the Buffyverse fandom thrive! Contributing to the Herald or the Digest can be a fun way to keep up with new fanworks and a chance to collaborate with some friendly and knowledgeable folks on a project that has been going strong for close to twenty years now.
To find out more, feel free to contact thenewbuzwuzz on the webbed site of your choice or via email at [email protected], reply to this post, or send sunnydaleherald an ask on tumblr. We'd be thrilled to hear from you!

wool socks and scarves for autumnal asks! :)
wool socks: what’s something you look forward to in fall?
In general, plenty of things: haunted house season, Halloween parties, cozy clothes weather, return of fall TV, making soup!
scarves: if you could only wear one outfit for the rest of your life what would it be?
Ooooh tricky! I assume layers should be involved for weather reasons, and I’m cold-natured so I’m going to make it more cool weather-ish.
Short-sleeved dress (red, green, maybe blue); black tights; black boots; leather jacket; hoop earrings.

11&18 ^^
Sis asked this like a month ago but my time perception is wonky so yah. Thanks for asking tho, sis!
11. Describe your ideal day.
This varies of course, but hmm. I will assume that this is not a work day. Something like this:I wake from a good night’s sleep not from sleeping pills, feeling rested and ready to be awake. I feel an emotion and that emotion is a mix between contentment and joy. I go to make breakfast with no problems, chatting to you in between. I eat the glorious whatever it is with no problem either, enjoying the meal. Later I go to my room and work on a thing I’m working on - probably writing or editing a thing, physical things are for evenings, but I guess it can be physical too. I listen to music and get in the creative zone and I feel good about what I’ve accomplished. In the afternoon I go make some lunch again without a problem bc I have appetite. After I go to the city centre and meet with one of my friends, we drink some coffee/tea and chat and are reminded abt how much we like the other person. I go back home, eat yet again, and play some video games or watch some critical role. The group chat is going all day, nobody is feeling bad and we’re enjoying joking around with each other. I don’t feel people-tired at any point and I know that tomorrow will be good too. I go to sleep, which comes to me naturally.
18. What’s your patronus?
Hmm. I did the Pottermore test and it said that it’s a cat but I don’t feel very good abt that. So a patronus is meant to represent my personality and I would also like to think that something good or something you would feel protected by. My personality is a weird mix between a cat and a dog, I guess, I vibe with cat’s want for space and time alone but I am much like a dog in my want to be liked by everyone. I don’t really have a strong connection with more animals tbh, it’s not a rat, I mistrust horses. It could maybe be a wolf, to keep the aspect of wildness (and to also be cool af). Yeah. A wolf. I’m cool now.
