Season 2, Episode 10: the deep dive caper for @csweekly

On the surface, this seems like an underwhelming title, but it really does describe the deep dive Carmen takes in the ocean and into her past.

This is such a serious moment but I honestly can’t help but laugh at how dramatic Carmen is to Player. He knows exactly where she’s going they’re nearly there. He chartered their flight. But I understand it’s a nice parallel to the end of last season where she promised never to go back, as Zack kindly reminds us.

Protective Ivy is also a fav, even if it’s just from Zack’s big mouth lol. But honestly this is just another in a long line of instances where Zack is legit just trying to relate and make Carmen feel better. She said she’d never go back? Yeah but circumstances change. That’s what he’s (probably) trying to say. Since he used the same tactic to cheer her up after Carmen’s altitude sickness. Great line tho about the peppers and onions 😂

“It’ll be just like old times” SOBBING Carmen remembers those days fondly.

Player concerned enough that he actually suggests calling in ACME. For all they know, everything is still intact on VILE island. Carmen would need to sneak past or fight the Faculty the Cleaners and untold operatives. On their home turf. Player remembers how hard it was for Carmen to escape the first time. He does not want to risk losing Carmen again. He is fully aware at how serious this is. This is his last chance to change her mind. What must have been going through Player’s mind as he watches Carmen’s hat on his map go from (presumably) Casablanca to the Canary Islands? The opposite of what he watched her do the night of the graduation caper and when she left with the coat and hat.

Player didn’t get a chance to tell Carmen that he tracked Chief until now 👀 She’s surprised, but isn’t mad. Nice for later in the episode. The guilt when he admits it was Shadowsan’s idea is excellent.

Carmen just finishes telling Player that if VILE knew she was coming they’d destroy the evidence. Thank you for confirming exactly what happened because you asked for help (1) time and stole a key card (though for legit information gathering)

She missed it by two weeks. And this would have been right before Botswana. Coach Brunt leaves from here to go to the mine. Carmen arrives before Brunt, as she’s there to observe Brunt taking a tour. Poetic that (it could just about work) Carmen wakes and is restless at the same time across the world, VILE Academy is destroyed?

The scenes of the empty halls of the Academy…this is what happened before they destroyed the Castle-ship in VLD. It’s super effective on my heart.

I love the Faculty plotting haha. Cleo is utterly gleeful at Maelstroms suggestion.

Okay so if Devineaux is on the island all scruffy and angry, he’s been there a day or two. He missed VILE by DAYS. The one time his bad luck wasn’t of his own doing. This is the best comedy. I also like the insinuation that he explored every inch of that island that he could get to before deciding to leave. He didn’t check his gas and he didn’t check his phone he literally went looking for VILE first.

Weather satellites my beloved.

Considering that Roundabout would have needed to put bribes in the right places for governments around the world to not notice that explosion.

Listen, I know it would have ruined the mood but how FUNNY it would have been for Carmen to rescue Chase off of the island. I still can’t believe they were there at the same time. I really want to be a fly on the wall post series when Chase and Julia finally get to compare notes with Ivy and Zack.

THEY ARE AT A DiNER IN TEXAS I'M HOWLING. (Or somewhere in the southern U.S. I don’t know my dialects well enough). So sinister and yet completely in place. I bet they’re at a Waffle House, no one would bat an eye at this behavior.

And Roundabout joins the Faculty. It’s almost not fair, how could any other operative top his resources. He does a cool job though plot wise! I was entertained.

Devineaux’s entire castaway montage is gold. I don’t know what else to say. I bet there’s a storyboard out there where he talks to a coconut. He is at his lowest of the low here. Even no longer an Interpol employee. He has nothing. Which means, it can only go up from here. He had to be humbled first.

Ahhhh and VILEs side of the story comes out. The absolute pain in Players face and voice when he’s about to tell Carmen her father was Faculty. I love that Player is reading this to her in real time. She’s been on the comms waiting patiently. The AGONY.

This whole rest of the episode is pain. The angst literally overflows. It’s amazing.

Carmen first thought, her first HOPE is that her father was Interpol. The way she rambled off that theory. When Player confirms he’s VILE you can tell in her voice and eyes that she goes through the five stages of grief and then tries to hide it by focusing on the facts. ‘Okay if he’s VILE, then it’s a code name’. And her SHOCK at finding out he was Faculty. Magnificent scene.

*grabs popcorn* Carmen confronts Shadowsan. Carmen’s anger finally comes out. She has been waiting. And she finds out he was indeed still withholding secrets. No more.

“Your silence. Is like Thunder” rate this the coolest line ever. It sets the stage SO well with fading to Carmen standing stiff in the doorway. I’m trembling.

Shadowsan’s so good at masking his emotions, even turned away from Carmen, that i really can’t tell how much this does or does not blindside him. Goodness the man is hiding emotions from HIMSELF.

“Did you take my fathers life?”

Shadowsan’s truthful answer is immediate. Carmen, however, doesn’t have the full story yet and in defense of her considering Shadowsan’s track record, doesn’t believe him.

“If you run, I will find you” is this the most dangerous sounding that Carmen’s been to date? Because it sure feels like it.

The way he says “no more running no more secrets” with such resignation but also guilt in a dignified way.

Where do I even BEGIN to unpack this.

Okay first of all, Dexter Wolfe. Wolfe is an interesting code name as it is one of singular strength but also very pack oriented. So that combined with the “lone wolf” moniker suits him well, as he didn’t like to be on the island and didn’t fit with the rest of the Faculty. They thought it was VILE as the pack, but his pack is really Carmen and her mother. Next, Dexter. I always wondered why *Dexter*. I think it’s a play on “dexterity”, as in his agility and thieving fingers.

Listen, it honestly kills me that Carmen is absolutely her father’s daughter. He can’t sit still. Loves the thrill of the hunt. Beat of his own drum. Was willing to defy VILE for the sake of others. As Carmen is listening to Shadowsan tell his side of the account, she has to be thinking this. He was the best. And was never caught. Until VILE caught him.

Omg younger Faculty. I like how Cleo and Bellum really dig into their code names lol, they scream “new Faculty members testing the waters”. I am eternally interested in how they all became Faculty. I get the sense that Maelstrom is senior and that’s why he does a lot of the speaking for the others. 100% betting that they both cut their hair because of Black Sheep.

ANYWAY. Young operative Shadowsan is so interesting. Because of his skill set. Implies that they don’t have the Cleaners yet? But they are there by the time Black Sheep is grade school age. I’m thinking Shadowsan the operative was a test run for wanting to hire someone like the Cleaners. Also how did Shadowsan get to VILE Academy? I’d say it’s pretty clear that they’ve got business ties to the yakuza, and Shadowsan literally was an exchange student, a promising young star that could do bigger and better things for both parties benefits. Just a theory.

The INCREDIBLY soft way that Shadowsan says “you”, and the way the music shifts. I LOVE.

Okay, baby Carmen can stand briefly, point, and sit up very well. Crawls like a pro, ready to take first steps but not quite there. My estimate is 9 months old, give or take. Now a parent myself, I get it. First 3-4 months Carmen wouldn’t have been doing much, eating sleeping and pooping mostly, but after that she’d have really started to become aware and want to engage in the world. That lines up to close to half a year that Dexter might want to be away to be with her more frequently, because first laugh, smiling at her primary caregivers. Dexter would have craved that. Badly. So it’s part of his slip up. And that lines up to when VILE begins to notice something is off. I’m not emotional.

THE WAY BABY CARMEN FINDS SHADOWSAN AND LIKES HIM IMMEDIATELY. “Play with me,” she’s saying. And he does, 20 years later, to take down VILE.

Dexter cocky that he isn’t paranoid at all.

The way they build up to Dexter’s fate is so tense. Like, Shadowsan told us that it wasn’t him, and never has he technically lied, but as an audience we don’t trust him either. Carmen is emotionally compromised that she can’t consider anything else right now. Brilliant writing. The music and scene transitions are so effective as always.

And Carmen isn’t angry any longer. Not really. She’s just really really sad. Overwhelmed.

Dexter promised to return for Carmen. Despite that, I don’t really understand what his plan was. Was he going to escape, let Interpol find her, and then kidnap her back? Was he going to bring the car around? Did he know Shadowsan was there and knew he wouldn’t hurt the baby? Did he have plans with the nanny that she would return in just this situation? Stressful situation for him, so he probably was not thinking clearly, as Shadowsan says next.

In the other light, Carmen now knows without a shadow of a doubt that her parents loved her and did not abandon her on purpose. This is the important takeaway. I’m sure it was always in the back of her mind considering the story she was told. And the forefront of late after Player shared his experiences with her.

Dexter had a red car. Color theory. Also, the inner house is yellow as Shadowsan watches, that’s typically a color used for team red Allies (most of the civilians of the day have some yellow prominence in their outfits, while Julia has a red shirt, Devineaux has both red and yellow stripes on his tie, less prominent than Julia’s shirt). It bathes young Shadowsan in yellow, already showing that he is on Carmen’s side.

Chief no 😭 and in this very moment, as if nothing else were crashing Carmen’s world around her, this is the cherry on top. Trying to trust a new ally. SMH but yes, this is why ACME uses gas guns.

I love Chief’s angry face, she keeps her temper.

Did anyone write the fic detailing young Shadowsan’s trip across the Atlantic with baby Carmen? Please inform me where.

“Why would you make me find out on my own?” REAL. This scene is so emotionally charged I literally cannot keep up. ANGRY as she validly should be.

Shadowsan is CRYING. He has held this to HIMSELF for TWENTY YEARS

Carmen understands. Despite the emotional turmoil she just went through, she understands Shadowsan’s feelings enough that she takes pause and decides to prove him right or wrong. Which makes me think that despite it all, Shadowsan’s instincts on Carmen questioning herself were valid. That’s interesting.

However, she chooses now to channel what she knows into an even fiercer conviction. And that’s strength. Something that perhaps she might not have had at the beginning. Something she gained in Ivy, Zack, Shadowsan, and everyone else she’s met since Player.

COMMANDER let me scratch you and rub your little toe beans.

Okay I wasn’t crazy. Chief has gold ish eyes. (That’s yellow color theory fans)

Ivy and Zack: 0

Coffee Machine: 1

Maybe VILE needs whatever disguise Ivy and Zack have, because the chief of ACME, a covert organization that has been following and collecting any and all information on Carmen Sandiego and her “partners” has NO idea who they are (yet).

The way Carmen comes in, locks the door, and changes the sign to closed.

“Lost my pen” is a good neutral way of saying “my childhood mother figure who once tried to kill me kidnapped me and while doing so fried it. It also electrocuted me.”

“You must be ready to enlist” oh Chief. I’m sorry.

Carmen is so neutral and cool, completely unlike when she last chatted in Botswana, when she was hopeful that this partnership could work. It almost hurts to see it all go backwards.

Chief needs to take IT security training. She failed before Carmen even asked.

I’m so sorry Julia. You had nothing to do with this. Chief didn’t have to loop you in.

This is where Chief hits her downfall. Her desperation to prove VILE exists makes her not think clearly and ignore every corporate safety rule.

I do love to see Player in action though, so it’s fine : D “I’m on a shopping spree”. I’m 90% sure that Carmen told Player that they needed to get ACME’s files. He says he needs a Trojan, and she’s like “we have an empty VILE hard drive” and Player says “I’ll have it ready and mailed to you asap”

And confirms Shadowsan’s account of what happened that night.

1999. Given that Vera Cruz “died” two weeks prior, and that Carmen is nearing one year old, Carmen is a 90s baby. And I think that’s a beautiful homage to the 90s cartoon that they specify her age that way. 99% sure that’s the reason.

The absolute relief on Carmen’s face as Shadowsan reveals the empty coffin. The PEACE. She realizes that her parents were that close to starting a new hidden life with her in the middle of it. It’s comforting and heartbreaking at the same time. She knows her story. She can move forward now with conviction.

“I have a mother who may or may not know I’m alive.”

“Are you with me?”

“To the end of the line”

GIF REQUEST MEME: Favorite season from The 100 - Season four

I love season four for a lot of reasons!! I think it’s the best season of the show and it should have been their last (despite my love for most of s5 ^^) I’m gonna ramble a lot but I don’t want it to take over the gifset so I’ll put it under a cut

Season four is the time of hard, impossible choices for everybody. The bomb at Farm Station, the List, the Nightblood tests, opening the bunker, the anti-radiation medicine…. Everybody is put through the ringer during this season and honestly, this is what I’m here for.

First great point for me personally: They can’t stop the radiations. When season 3 ended with the reveal of the radiations coming, I was legit disappointed with the show, I didn’t want them to spend the season “turning off” radiations miraculously, you know. So when ep 2 of the season aired and the first thing Raven said was “there’s no magic button to stop this” I WAS SO HAPPY!! It immediately got me much more hyped for the rest of the season because I was invested in “riding out 5 years of hell” much more than “let’s find a magic button”. So the season hooked me then ^^

The season is really good at re-using previous themes and twist them in just the right way

Clarke, who was so angry at the council for killing her dad, finds herself in the council’s position, and starts to understand that making such hard decisions is never easy. Making the list for instance, is so different from what she had to do before. The genocide of Mt Weather was an act of despair in the middle of a war, but making the list is a process, she has to truly chose who is “worth” more, which is what the council did when they sent the 100 to the Ground. She choses to hide the truth from everybody despite it going against what she wanted at the start of the show. It’s a really cool change for her character.

The Arkers and Grounders take the decision to test the Nightblood against Luna, the Rock Line thief, and Emori’s will. An obvious reminder of s2 but that I appreciate. I liked the Mt Weather story because of this: the mountain men were the antagonists but they also were the same as the rest of the show, they were doing whatever they had to do to survive, whatever it took, no matter how cruel it could be. We see in this season that when faced with the same decision, our protagonists reach the same result: sacrificing other people’s bodily autonomy to survive is worth it to them. It’s a really interesting theme to bring back because it muddies the waters of who’s right and wrong, and it highlights that in the end, there is no black and white answer.

This season gives us my personal favorite version of Clarke: she’s the closest she’ll get to a true antagonist (only comparable to s5 but s5 is a little bit of a mess so I still prefer her in s4). She has one conviction: saving her people. And to get it, she is ready to lie, to cheat, to kill, whatever it takes. It is interesting because I always saw Clarke in that light. She always believes that she has the right idea and she will do what it takes to get what she thinks is best. That’s where she is interesting to me (I’m not interested in her being an innocent victim forced to take decisions, that’s not how I see her at all and I find her a little dull in that interpretation haha but that’s for another post). Clarke stealing the bunker is a cruel act, but man, it’s incredibly smart. At that moment she knows she’s condeming many people (some of whom very close to her) to death, but she believes deep inside her that it’s the right thing to do so she’s willing to do it. And i really prefer her in those ruthless moments.

Octavia’s arc this season isn’t my favorite, but she is at her best during the last few episodes for me. The creation of Wonkru is one of my favorite scenes of the entire show, even though I saw it coming a mile away lmao (1200 spaces, 12 clans, it was easy to see where they were going!). I love the scene, I love the place it comes from (Octavia channeling Lincoln’s convictions was brilliant). I might not agree with her decisions (skaikru definitely deserved more spots than the other clans), but it makes perfect sense for her character to make this decision. The scene of her talking to Skaikru and telling them they’re no different from the others, and they have to choose or they all die, is also one of my favorites. Octavia received no mercy on the Ark, she had a terribly tragic childhood because of those people who are now begging her for their lives, and she doesn’t budge. The Ark, and the Ground, forced her to be that way, and she doesn’t back away. It’s also all a brilliant introduction to what Wonkru and Octavia will become in s5 (but again, that’s for another post lmao)

I love that we get the introduction of Spacekru because I love their little found family and the scene where they reach the Ring is so good!

Murphy’s speech to Clarke makes me tear up everytime I see it (it really was one of the strongest moments of acting of the entire show, Richard Harmon is amazing in it). Emori also blows me away in the previous episode, the way she’s shown to be ruthless, and cunning, and also how well she reads people. She knew they would come to test someone, and she did everything she had to for that someone to not be her. I love her ^^

I like the plot of the second dawn bunker well enough! (although I will never change my mind that Cadogan was a dumbass for putting it where it is instead of IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FOREST WHERE THERE’S NO RISK OF BUILDINGS FALLING ON IT LIKE WHAT LITERALLY HAPPENED IN S5 OKAY anyway…..), it’s far from perfect but I like that it explains the people coming to greet Becca in s3, and I like that we expand a little on the origins of the Grounders culture (even though I wanted more about this). It’s kind of an “easy” solution, but at the same time it’s not. It was established early in the season before being abandoned, and even once it’s found, it’s not at all a perfect and easy solution. They have to fight for it, decide who lives there, it’s a pretty interesting development. What I mean is that it’s not discovered one episode before the end and it doesn’t solve everything. If anything, it creates more conflict. Which I appreciate alot.

ALSO ALSO Echo is a badass general in this season and I love it. She goes from being a spy in earlier seasons, to full-on commanding armies and being a strategic mastermind and I love it! She’s also ruthless and cunning and I lvoe that for her. It’s also such a good season for her and Bellamy!!! I lvoe all of it ^^

This season also has one of my favorite underrated quotes!!!! I’m gonna use a gif here cause I’m not at the limit yet lmao

“It’s unity day.” GODDDD it’s so good. It’s simple, but it conveys so much information and I love it:

Unity Day: the stations coming together to survive -> we’re virtually in the same situation here.

It’s a happy occasion, a day of survival and hope, just like the hope Octavia gave all the clans with her decisions

But it’s also a day of death and loss. She’s giving Kane a choice: join Wonkru with 100 members, or die in the flames.

It reminds us of the history of the Arkers, and I love when world-building does this thing where both characters are shown to have such a close cultural background that three little words are enough to convey such a strong message. It’s a detail but I love it and I wanted to ramble for a little bit ^^

Clarke’s sacrifice: This is when it gets to “meh” points for the seasons for me. Clarke deciding to stay behind to save Spacekru was a good moment. Yes, I know that if she hadn’t climbed the tower they all would have died anyway, but still. It’s a great moment for her character. She has hurt those people time and time again during this season, she was ready to let them die more than once, and I think she regrets it (although again, I like to see the extremes she’s willing to reach in this season). In that moment, she doesn’t decide that it’s too late to survive so she might as well give up. She knows she’s going to die, and she gives her last moments to save the lives of the people she hurt in the past. And I really love this. That is….. Until Clarke is revealed to not have died. I truly believe that she had reached the ending of her arc in the show, and it would have been a great ending to her character. But that’s also because I believe the show should have ended in s4 lmao. If it had ended, then maybe they could have left her death ambiguois, by showing her reaching the safety of the lab, but not showing her again afterwards. That way, we had no way of being sure she survived, but it was left ambiguous enough to make us decide her fate outselves.

The perfect ending: I didn’t choose the last gif randomly. That scene of Raven and Bellamy looking down on the Earth was in my opinion the perfect shot to end the show. At that point in time, we are left in a place that is very similar to where the show started: the Earth is destroyed by radiations, some people are waiting it out in space, some people are waiting it out on the ground. it mirrors the premise of the show (although in a much smaller scale), but this time, we’re left with hope of what might come in the future. Those two groups know (or hope) that they will reunite, especially with Octavia and Bellamy, the relationship at the core of the show, being separated. If the show ends here, we have come full circle from the pilot episode, and we can imagine how those two groups will reunite in the future. I find that ending the best possible for the show, so even though there’s so much I like about season 5, I wish the show had stopped at that moment, at that shot of Raven and Bellamy looking down on the Earth.

Does Lion ever come around?? 👀

Rumors were a thing.

Everyone knew what rumors were. It’s not much for a teenager or young adult to think of them as the seed to something evil. To plain complications of the emotional and stupid kind.

The types that are dangerous are the ones that spur around like hellfire and ruin your reputation to high heaven with no end in sight. No mercy in the killing; just malice and plunder with one’s personal life until you had nothing left but ashes in the palms of your hands.

For the students of Ocean Town Academy, those rumors were a thing, especially with an incident regarding the cheerleaders’ old boy cheerleader and other drama with similar intensity to that, but now the rumors floundering about were more...ridiculous than they could admit.

One instance would start at a lone campus wall—the kind that harbored the Nature Preservation club, who relaxed and talked about credentials and the plans for global warming with zealous in their tongues. Some would yell out about sponsorship plans and then a few would transition into debates about summer break—a normal conversation for their type of group, however, there was one conversation that became prevalent between the members like a plague stitched into their skins. It wasn’t serious like the talk of Earthly preservation, but…

“What do you mean there’s a lion?”

“There was a lion, I saw it!” A scraggly boy waved his hands, eyes wide and frantic. The others would know him as the vice president of their little club, who’d on occasions smoke some kush behind the campus buildings. “It was pink, it was over at the Dorm A Building, and some girl was feeding it some food from her balcony!”

"Haha, what?” One of the girls snorted, shaking her head with a golden smile. She was the treasurer, plain and simple with her joyous slings and languid posture. “Are you high still?”

He grimaced. “I’m serious. Cross my heart, man, it was a huge lion. I know what a lion looks like.”

“And I know what a smoker looks like,” their club president gave in a dry tone, eyes half-lidded and languid.

“I wasn’t smoking!”

“I don’t believe you.”

The boy groaned. “Please, I’m serious.”

”And I’m being serious of the fact that you have a problem,“ the president said. “If you continue poisoning yourself, then gibberish like that is just gonna become frequent.”

"Okay, you know wha—!”

“Guys, guys!” A sleek-haired man held him back before he could tear his hands into the president’s neck. “Look, if there ever was a lion in here, wouldn’t we have gotten someone mauled already? Remember the bear?”

“Oh, I remember the bear.” The president grumbled. “That poor mascot costume didn’t stand a chance.”

A woman mumbled. “You’re the only one who feels sympathy for the lobster.”

“But, dude, this happened at night.” The vice president looked frantic, watching them peer at his motions like they were seeing a spectacle—something they’ll never truly understand or even listen to. He wanted them to take him seriously, that’s the only goal he had in mind. A specific detail flashed in his mind. “I remember it clearly, that cheerleader guy was on it.”

“Steven Universe?” One asked. It wasn’t hard to discern that star player from the cheerleading group, he became a known figure just from his presence alone.

“Yeah!” He nodded, hoping that they’re following along. Some looked interested, but a few such as the treasurer and president, were keen on staring elsewhere, eating their food. “He was talking to this girl on the dorm balcony, I forgot her name but ohhh man it was legit.”

The treasurer frowned, kombucha in her hand. She took a sip. “What did she look like?”

He scratched his head. Mind don’t fail him now, at least one of them is asking some good questions. “Short dark hair. Had a jacket on? Flannel, was it?”

“There’s a lot of people who wear flannels and jackets in this school, Gabe.” The president was at it again, shaking his head with a sigh. “The whole lion deal must’ve been from the drugs, but you definitely saw a rendezvous between two people; that’s for certain.”

“But there was a lion!”

“Wait, wait!” One of them piped up. It was the treasurer, eyes dashing between them in cheeky fashion. “If this is Steven Universe we’re talking about, what if it’s his friend?”

“Which friend?” The sleek-haired man said. “He has a bajillion friends.”

“The one he’s always saying is his best friend.” She said. “Connie bloody Maheswaran, duh!”

“I thought they’re already dating?” The president sat up from his spot, previous glazed eyes now peaked with interest.

Gabe blanched. “Guys, please, I can give you all the deta—”

“They’re not, surprisingly.” The treasurer shrugged. “I don’t know if they’re blind or something is just going on between them.”

“Ooo, what if it’s forbidden love?” Someone added.

“Do you really think that happens in real life?” Another scoffed at the idea. “Come on, man!”

“Then why was Steven at her dormitory!?”

Untitled Abuse Game

Hey there, celebrity ghost hunters. We're a bit late today, but that's fine. I don't think anyone will mind being late to another Red Hood review. In fact, I bet you were hoping there wouldn't be one! Haha, too bad! You're cursed now~

Here's the cursed cover:

Remember me? Essence? I was in the last issue! I know the readers remember me, but do they care? Probably not! Essence returns! Even though she's appeared in the last two issues. Essence Returns was always my favourite of that era of Essence films. Much better than Essence Forever or Essence & Robin. I also love how the Untitled are all just kinda... standing there. They like to watch. After all, the only two people who can actually kill them are fighting, so why should they get in the way of that? Anyway, magic red katana probably beats crowbar, but I'll have to check the type matchup chart to be sure. In short, this cover is very red, and not much else~

To counter the cover's extremely red tone, the comic opens with a full-page splash that's almost entirely blue. We've opened to a flashback of Jason Todd preparing to leave the All-Caste to go help Essence, since nobody else wants to. Ducra tries to tell him that Essence failed her final test, so why help her? Jason says this is bullshit and jumps off the mountain. Ducra calls him a bonehead for it, instantly making her the best character in this issue. That said, I don't actually disagree with Jason going after his friend, which is a rare instance of seeing him do a legit heroic action with no self-interest.

So in the present, we pick up where we left off, with Jason, General Glory, and Bizarro being attacked by a group of Untitled in the middle of a protest. Sort of a counter-protest movement, I guess. Bizarro punches a wall to make an opening and begins herding the innocent, non-Untitled people in the crowd through it. Jason compliments him on his style. He and Glory begin kicking some ass, and Glory gets a stomach wound evident only to the reader. Jason briefly treats us to a flashback that basically tells us that he apparently didn't kill all the Untitled like he thought. Thanks, Jason, I think we got that impression~

Meanwhile, Essence and Artemis are fighting. I guess this comic doesn't know what to do with two bad bitches besides pit them against each other. The Middle-East general guy that Artemis is pretending she's working for tells his subordinates to run, which is about as close to a noble act as the script permits him. Artemis is winning, too, mostly because Essence is inhabiting Isabel, and while Isabel is a reasonably fit person, she's not a battle-ready warrior. Essence even briefly vacates Isabel to prove this to Artemis and give her pause, because Isabel has no idea what's going on while she's not in the driver's seat of her body.

Back over with Jason and friends, Bizarro uses his freeze breath to eliminate the rest of the Untitled. With a moment to recover, Jason ponders where the Untitled might strike next, and asks Glory for his opinion. Unfortunately, Glory's too busy having Akira tentacles grow out of his stomach wound and mouth. Yeah, he's possessed by the Untitled now. In fact, he's the Unspoken, the oft-rumoured leader of the Untitled. Jason even drops a classic "I... I thought you were a myth!" in response to realising this. Given all the tentacles growing out of his throat, Glory/the Unspoken really lives up to his name and is completely silent as he gestures, causing all those obelisks they were looking for to erupt from the ground.

And over in the other fight, Artemis is losing now, mostly because attacking Essence would just be hurting Isabel, and Artemis isn't an asshole. So she's getting stabbed a lot instead. She also tells Essence that if she actually thinks Jason is going to destroy the world or whatever, she's probably fooling herself. I agree, but probably not for the same reasons as Artemis. Anyways, Essence keeps taunting her that her Blood Blade can only cut the guilty, and Artemis retorts that this isn't about her. Before Essence can strike a mortal blow, suddenly an even more armored and badass Amazon appears to block the hit. Artemis can tell exactly who this is: her missing axe, Mistress.

Hey, you remember those future supervillain kids that the series was supposed to be about? Yeah, we finally get to see all of them again, as Ma Gunn introduces Mallah and the Brain to their new charges. Mallah she introduces in person, while the Brain prefers to observe them from a video feed. That's very supervillain of him already.

And back in Qurac, the obelisks begin activating. Bizarro continues to be the hero of the issue by pulling Jason outside of the magic circle the obelisks are making. And what they create in the center is a three-dimensional (perhaps more) MC Escher painting. You know, stairs that go off in different directions, curving platforms that lead to impossible space, that sort of non-Euclidian thing. Well, that can't be good~

Okay, now shit’s started to pop off, and I’m way into it. Bizarro is a treasure, and he’s definitely my favourite character in these books (though Artemis is very good too). I honestly really hope General Glory gets out of this okay, despite being full of tentacles. I really hate when they bring back an old character that hasn’t been used in years only to kill them off. It’s so wasteful. We even got back to the student supervillain plot and remembered to put them in the story!

But next week, we won’t get to ride this train of actually good comic decisions further. You see, next week is very close to Halloween. And I’d like to do something a little different, just like the last couple years...~

When was the last time you baked something for someone? It was like 2011 or something. My parents had bought a new oven and my sister and I wanted to ~baptize it by baking cookies. Our cookies honestly didn’t taste like anything but our relatives were really nice to praise us about them anyway.

What is the most annoying thing that your parents do? I don’t like it when my mom barges into rooms without knocking and when she’s being fat-phobic and racist. My dad occasionally has brief spurts of being agitated with everyone and he’ll proceed to have comments about every single thing going on around him, and that can get pretty damn annoying.

Would you be mad if your mom showed your boyfriend your baby pictures? If my mom showed my *girlfriend my baby pictures, I wouldn’t be annoyed. I don’t see why I would be, they’re just photos.

Would you say you’re someone who has good manners? Yes. I honestly pride myself on that fact because I’ve seen so many people my age who lack basic manners. I may not be close with my mom but she raised me very well when it comes to this.

When was the last time you went to an amusement park? Which one? I went to a school fair last January if that counts. If we’re talking about legit amusement parks, it was in 2013 when we went to Universal Studios in Singapore and Legoland in Malaysia.

Would you rather be kissed on the neck or on the lips? I’d normally prefer neck, but I haven’t been kissed on the lips for so long that I’d pick that for now.

Do you completely trust the person you’re dating? Very much.

Has someone ever called you heartless before? Why is that? My mom. Idk, she was being her.

What color was the shirt you wore yesterday? Gray, but it had a rainbow heart on the top left side.

Have you ever completely given up on someone any time in life? Kind of, yeah. Very early on I had given up on the possibility of my mom changing her ways and tendencies. Ever since coming to terms with that fact, it’s been easier to tolerate the verbal abuse. I’ve also given up on the possibility of one of my uncles turning his life around for the better, permanently.

What is one thing you’re not looking forward to in the next week? More days of being stuck at home.

Would you consider Christmas your favorite holiday? It is not and it hasn’t been for a very long time.

Would you rather give someone presents or receive them? Receive. I’m perpetually anxious about whether someone likes my gifts or not so giving is always stressful for me; whereas when I receive presents I always, always love them whatever they may be.

How many chances do you normally give someone before giving up on them? One, usually. I’m not very patient with people who mess up lol.

Did you parents know what gender you were before you were born? Yes, but they didn’t decide on a name until the very moment that they had to write down a name while filing for my birth certificate. Ever since they revealed that to me, I’ve always been conditioned to think that my name was a super clutch decision lmao. It’s fine though because I’m happy with my name.

Are any of your really close friends pregnant right now? No, I’m very sure none of them are. Then again, the people I went to high school with who have kids now kept their pregnancies a secret, so I honestly never know who’s currently pregnant.

Are you for or against inter-racial relationships? Anyone who is against it is a traditional asshole.

Would you say you’re more of a pessimist or optimist? Depends on the situation. I can always be either.

Do you know what your true typing speed is? What is it? I mean I’ve taken some tests before and if I bring my A-game I can do 85-95 words per minute. I never have to type that fast in real life though so my average typing speed is probably slightly slower than that.

What would you say is the longest survey you’ve ever taken? I did so many attempts to do the 5000-question survey but I never finished it lol. My longest survey was probably 500 questions back when I had just discovered surveys and wanted to take the longest ones available.

Do you get bored by things really easily, or not so much? I’d say I get bored fast. I think it’s because I’ve never really had good things stick with me for a long time and they’re always taken away from me so soon, so now, whenever I enjoy stuff I think my brain just kinda self-sabotages the whole situation and makes me bored with them so that I can move past them with no problem.

Do you hate it when people pronounce ‘potatoes’ as ‘taters?’ No. I didn’t even know they mean the same thing until right now lol, I just thought taters was some sort of American term.

Have you ever been addicted to something unhealthy? I’ve never been legitimately addicted to anything, no.

Do you wear a lot of make-up on a daily basis? I wear no makeup on a daily basis. < Same.

Who makes the best desserts in your entire family? My uncle Afay. He posts his masterpieces on his Facebook and they allllllways look so good whether it’s cheesecake, dream cakes, cream puffs, crinkles, etc. Sometimes when I heart-react his food posts, he’ll even tell me to drop by his place after school so he can give me some :)

When was the last time your received a hug? Who was this hug from? March 7th. Gabie. This lack of hugs is so not good for me lmao.

Do you have good dreams or nightmares more? I have weird dreams most often. They’re neither good nor bad, it’s just random people showing up doing things I’ll never expect them to do in real life haha.

Would you rather color pictures with markers or crayons? Crayons. Markers use up a lot of ink and I’d feel weird using all that up just to color a picture; I’d rather use markers to simply write stuff.

Do people come to you for advice a lot of the time? Not all the time but I do get a fair amount of that kind of message.

When the holidays come around, do you watch holiday movies? Not always. I watch them year-round. Would you say you’re a friendly person or not so much? I’m friendly with everybody but I hold back to a certain extent. At the end of the day I still choose which people I wanna be my true self, or show my true personality, with.

Have you ever / do you ever recycle? Sometimes, though out of the 3R’s I do reduce the most.

When was the last time you ate something from Burger King? Sometime shortly before the quarantine. I think it was in February.

When someone mentions a song, does it make you wanna listen to it? Only if it’s a song I already know and like.

Do you usually talk more than you should about things? Yep, have a pretty big mouth. I’ve been scolded for it more than once.

Who is the nosiest person you know? Do you like them anyways? Mils can be such a social climber and always wants to be in the know about everything so that she can understand references and look cool. Idk, it’s hard to like her because she tries so hard. I’m always nice to her though because she hasn’t done anything bad to me.

When did you last talk to one of your teachers? Like...from high school? Man, I have no clue. The day of my graduation, probably. I noped the fuck out of that place and out of that culture the second I got my diploma.

How many class periods does your school have? What are the classes? We have hundreds of classes in my university so it’ll be impossible and incredibly time- and space-consuming to list them all down. During the time I was in high school we had English, Filipino, Math (a different specialization for every year), Social Studies/History (same as math), Science (same thing), Christian Living Education (because Catholic school lol), Philosophy in senior year, Health, Home Economics/Accounting, Homeroom, and some local class where we were basically taught how to be charitable to the less fortunate (because again, Catholic school). I don’t know if I was able to recall all the classes but that’s a good chunk of them. We typically had 7-8 classes in a day that would last 45 minutes each.

Would you say you’re a faster or slow learner? Depends on what I’m learning. For instance, I’m quick at learning stuff that can be memorized or read from a book like history, law, biology, etc. but you’ll have to be incredibly patient with me when it comes to teaching me something like sewing or origami.

Are you one of those people who like The Nightmare Before Christmas? I’ve never seen it.

Do you fully understand the concept of ‘love?’ Probably not yet. I have an idea of it now, but that can always change. After all, I’m still incredibly young and have lots of unknown lessons yet to pick up.

BnHA Chapter 225: Interview with a Vampire

Previously on BnHA: The Shigaraki Squad (after some debate) set out to rescue Giran from the Liberation Army’s clutches. Tomura plans to sic Gigantomachia on them, although the guy is still a-snooze for the next two and a half hours, so who even knows how that’s gonna work. Anyways though, the rest of the gang, Dabi included (over his protests), arrived at the designated meeting location in Aichi prefecture to be greeted by none other than Slidin’ Go, because apparently you can’t fucking trust anyone nowadays. He led them to the center of the town, which turned out to be populated by members of Re-Des’s army, including his top brass. Everyone attacked at once, and the League set to work kicking ass and not even bothering to take names because they’re just gonna kill everyone anyway so who cares! The chapter ended with Toga gettin’ ready to throw down with Kizuki, a.k.a. my new badass lady villain fave who can blow shit up with her mind, holy crap.

Today on BnHA: The Liberation Army continues to battle the League, confident in their eventual win, mostly because Re-Destro has somewhat smugly deduced that the League currently has no Noumu to spare. Kizuki, who is apparently a journalist, faces off against Toga and hounds her with questions about her past. Seems she’s specifically the type of journalist that likes to harass people about all of the most personal and private details of their lives. Toga sets to work stabbing all of Kizuki’s redshirt goons and sucking their blood, but this winds up backfiring as Kizuki makes brutal use of her quirk to blow up said blood. So basically she explodes Toga from the inside out. Somehow Toga doesn’t fucking die, and although I Have Questions About This, we can save that for later since the story is moving forward with or without my suspension of disbelief, and next up on the agenda is a motherfucking Toga flashback, folks.

(As always, all comments not marked with an ETA are my mostly-unspoiled reactions from my first readthrough of this chapter. I’m caught up with the manga now at chapter 226, so any ETAs will reflect that.)

by the way, getting back to that earlier panel for a second, it occurs to me that of the three “rescue” arcs we’ve had thus far, only one has featured an actual damsel, and that was a baby damsel at that. like, a six-year-old girl. so like, that was more about her being a small child than her being female. and meanwhile the “damsels” in the other two arcs consisted of (a) the toughest motherfucker in class 1-A, and now (b) the most hardboiled fucking guy in the entire series. and by contrast, female characters have played critical roles in all three arcs on the rescuing side, and now we’re about to see two lady villains fucking throw down

like, I know I give Horikoshi a lot of shit for not having more badass female characters, but a lot of that is because BnHA honest to god is a cut above most other shounen manga to begin with when it comes to feminism. and it just makes me want it to be even better, because I know it could be

god, I can’t wait to be reading manga like 20 years from now, though, when Japan is (hopefully) finally a bit more woke

and shouldn’t he know about Gigantomachia, though? even the heroes know about that one. if they were spying on the League with a fucking satellite, wouldn’t they have noticed the giant boulder man continuously trying to crush Tomura for two-day stretches at a time??

I love how Horikoshi makes the distinction between villains who at least care about their own, and villains who don’t give a fuck about anybody. like, the League is still evil -- Toga stabbed a man in the neck not ten pages ago -- but there’s no doubt whatsoever who we’re supposed to root for her. Toga is just as crazy as this lady, but she tied a handkerchief around Twice when his mask got torn. meanwhile Kizu blows up her own subordinates so she can get the hot goss from her victims before she murders them

I love the description of her as a bright and reasonable girl, though. back when she first disguised herself as Camie I suspected that it might be her, but it seemed far-fetched because she showed herself capable of being perfectly logical and sane while disguised, and it was a side of her we’d never seen before. but I love that, though. I love that Toga’s particular brand of being unhinged doesn’t require her to be dumbed down. she’s brilliant. she just also happens to really, really like stabbing people

But only if,

they were meant to be together,

in this life.

Age 7-8

Two kids were lost in a supermarket.

In the same supermarket?

On the same day?

In the same time?

In some lives,

they were not.

But at least once in their lives they were indeed lost in a supermarket on a hot summer day.

Supposed to cling to their mothers skirts and stay close like they were asked to, while their mothers shopped.

But,

well,  

there’s only so much a child can listen to.

Which is why child number 1 found herself lost in a throng of people.

And child number 2 found herself hiding behind one of those new freezers the frozen food was stored in.

Child number 1 didn’t mean to get lost.

An old lady had dropped something from her cart and her mother always told her to respect her elders.

So as an obedient child she help get the old lady’s piece of paper back to her.

Child number 2 did get lost on purpose.

Because in her mind-

It’s what her mother dared her to do.

Child number 1 started panicking.

The nice old lady gave her the pizza coupon as a reward for getting her coupons back to her.

But when child 1 turned around she was lost.

Her mother nowhere in her sights.

Just strangers milled around in an unfamiliar place.

As one would suspect, it’s overwhelming for a kid.

Tears started welling up in child number 1’s eyes as anxiety settled into her bones.

Child number 2 was starting to think that actually taking her mother’s words to heart was a bad idea.

She also started to think that sitting behind a dusty, old, cold freezer eating frozen food straight out of the bag without asking was a bad idea.

What her mother actually said was:

“If you get lost I’m going to leave you and you’ll live here forever.”

Living at the supermarket didn’t seem all that bad to child number 2.

But the loneliness felt terrible.

Child number 1 started to run.

With no aim in mind.

Well, she actually hoped that at least one of the people that she literally ran into would scold her and she would cling to her skirts like she was supposed to and never let go.

But well, fate didn’t end up going so well for child number 1.

Fate just created a misunderstanding.

She ran past the same old lady who gave her the coupon.

And in her haze child number 1 didn’t realize the old lady calling after her.

She also didn’t realize the old lazy still calling out for her and that she started to follow child number 1 through the crowd.

She also failed to see the security guard taking notice of the commotion and coming to the wrong conclusion.

With two people yelling after her the girl ran faster before slipping in front of a CAUTION WET sign.

Child number 1 yelped as oily, crumbly, cold hands dragged her behind a freezer.

Child number 2 had witnessed the small disturbance and decided to take action.

However she didn’t think said action will get her punched straight in the face.

“I saved you! Geez...” child number 2 muttered harshly while holding her aching nose.

Thankfully it wasn’t bleeding.

Child number one responded with a sharp: “I never asked for your help!”

“Well, if you want to go back outside-”, child number 2 accented her words by trying to shove child number 1 through the small opening that was used to get behind the freezer.

“No! No, fine ok! I’ll stay- Stop pushing me!” child number 1 whispered.

Child number 2 stopped and propped herself back up against the freezer.

Child number 1 sat against the wall,

the old woman and the security guard having long since ran past the freezer.

“You should apologize.”

“Why do I need to apologize?”

“You punched me in the face.”

“You dragged me behind a freezer.”

“Do you want to go back outside?”

“...”

“Fine, I’m sorry.”

“It’s ok. Besides I think I scared you, haha!”

“I wasn’t scared by some weird… freezer dwelling...chicken nugget eater?- Why are you eating-”

���I’m not eating chicken nuggets!”

“I saw them. Hiding them under the freezer won’t help.”

“You can go back out-,”

“You’re supposed to pay for things before buying them!”

“Shhhhh!-”

Child number 1 looked at child number 2 distrustfully.

“I don’t want to talk about it.” Child number 2 said sniffing.

“...”

“You’re crying-,”

“You’re the one who was crying while running into people.”

“I was looking for my mom, ok!”

“...”

“You lost your mom too? I mean- I didn’t lose lose my mom I just…”

“So, we’re both lost?”

“I’m not lost.”

“Yeah, right...Nugget.”

“Yeah, well...Pizza coupon?”

“I’d take just the Pizza part.”

“...ok.”

They eventually came out from behind the freezer and explained to the security guard the misunderstanding.

Then they went off to search for their mothers.

Child number found her mother immediately, and ran straight into the folds of her skirt.

Child number one was so wrapped up in her mother scolding her she totally forgot about child number- Nugget.

And when Pizza turned back around she couldn't find her friend.

Nugget was also searching for her friend from her post on the side of a grocery cart.

Finding her mother was easy with her parent yelling for her.

The cart rattled through the parking lot.

The texture of the asphalt making it quite a bumpy ride.

Pizza helped her mother put groceries into the car.

Nugget took the keys and started the car to get the AC running like she was asked to.

And while their mothers drove out of the parking lot.

Two girls met eyes from two different cars.

One car going left.

The other turning right.

Neither knowing how important, or how painful the other will be in their lives.

And by painful...

It’s painful by how they never quite meet.

No matter how close fate brings the two individuals together.

Age 14-15?

School field trip sounded cool until Nugget got lost.

She wandered off looking at the flock of sheep on the farm.

The class was supposed to be learning about farm animals, but Nugget had already read about them from the books in the library.

Eventually she came to a rusted chain link fence.

And that was the second time she met Pizza.

Pale skin, glasses, and white clothes.

Pizza was coming back from the bathroom when she heard rattling from a fence and a voice shouting nonsense.

She turned around and almost didn’t recognize the kid- no teen now.

Messy curly hair, tan skin, and scars.

Pizza was about to open her mouth and respond when-

“Where have you been?” a loud voice bellowed. Nugget flinched at the loud voice, the rusty fence mimicking her.

One of Pizza’s chaperones came stomping over. Kicking up dry dust and dirt as she went about.

“Ms. W-!”

“We don’t have time! The buses are waiting on us, let’s go!”

The chaperone totally ignored Nugget as she grabbed ahold of Pizzas hand.

Pizza was being dragged back to the buses.

“Wait! What’s your name?”

“It’s-!”

Pizza was cut off by the buses started up, having caught sight of the last lost student.

Nugget was trapped behind the fence. She almost had the idea to climb over.

As Pizza was driven off in a mass of screaming kids, their eyes met once again.

But Pizza was the only one who was behind glass.

And Nugget was only left with imprinted rusted hands,

from grasping the fence too hard.

Wishing there were no barriers to get to know her mysterious friend more.

Age 17-18?

Senior trip usually sucked.

Which is why Pizza opted to go to a medical program.

While her peers were probably getting drunk and making bad life decisions, she was furthering her career.  

She was performing an analysis on a deep shock dummy patient.

Her and other top students were put into the window lab.

Where visiting schools can see what it will be like for their students that join the program.

And as fate would have it,

Nuggets school was visiting.

Pizza didn’t notice the smooshed up face against the glass staring intensely at her, until most of her colleagues were distracted by it.

Time froze for both girls.

Until, staff in white lab coats were ushering Nugget to get back with the main group.

Nugget didn’t want to leave and was causing a ruckus until Pizza make a motion for her to just go.

Pizza’s heart broke at the rejected expression Nuggets face wore.

Nugget reluctantly followed the staff.

She looked over her shoulder through the glass again.

And Pizza had half a mind to leave her simulated patient and find Nugget.

But,

Nugget was already gone.

And the exit only led to the other side of the building.

It was useless.

This time, not only separated by glass.

But by duty, and law.

Age 25-26?

There were so many instances where they just were about to meet.

But something was always between them.

Tearing them apart.

Fate was getting frustrated.

Which is why fate made Pizza miss her alarm at 6:30 am, and that forced her to get coffee from a shop closer to her internship job.

Unbeknownst to Pizza or Nugget.

Nugget was working the shift there during 7-10 am.

Pizza literally fell into the shop, her papers falling all around her.

The sound of the bell literally being killed and a girl falling into the coffee shop at 8:10 am startled Nugget, which caused her to fall off her stool behind the counter.

Thankfully it was just them in the shop at that time.

Pizza called up from the floor while gathering her papers:

“Hey! I know you guys are a coffee shop, but do you have any tea? Coffee really doesn’t affect me and I just need something this morning. I woke up late, green tea would be best, no honey or sugar thank you-!”

“Coffee doesn’t affect me either!- I mean- You got it ma'am!”

Nugget turned her back and started brewing hot water and setting out the leaves required.

Pizza finally captured all her escaped papers and walked up to the counter, placing down money to hurry and get out of there.

“Sorry, the tea is going to take just a minute to brew-”

Nugget froze.

Pizza looked up when the barista stopped in the middle of her sentence.

Their eyes met,

again.

Time froze.

Again.

The timer for the tea went off and out of habit Nugget turned around sharply and started pouring the tea into a cup.

They couldn’t think of anything to talk about, yet.

Nugget ringed up the cup of tea, and Pizza blew on the steaming surface of the cup.

“So, are you late or something?”

“I am, actually.”

“You should go then, you’re in a very worthwhile profession.”

“Kicking me out already...Nugget?”

“Ha! Funny because the last time we met I got the feeling you were the one kicking me out, Pizza.”

“Oh, how the roles have reversed.”

They chuckled into an awkward silence.

“...We never got each others names-”

Pizza’s sentence was cut short by the jingling of the shop door and a crowd of loud businessmen walked through.

“Go, you’ll be late.- Yes! What can I get you sir?”

Frowning as Pizza realized Nuggets words were true she found her feet walking towards the door.

She walked outside,

just to rush back in and-

“I’ll come back! I live near here! I will learn your name!”

All she received from Nugget was a small smile.

And now, thinking back.

Pizza should’ve realized that her smile was forced.

Sad, tense.

Pizza should’ve known.

No matter how much fate can dabble its hands into time and space.

Sometimes, it’s not enough to save someone.

Pizza’s internship was hell that afternoon.

There was a shootout between a gang and a couple of policemen working undercover in a few shops.

Many people were dead or requiring surgery to survive.

Throughout the entire afternoon all Pizza was assisting in surgery were doctors with civilians.

No policemen.

Yet.

Not until Nugget.

Goddamn it, Nugget.

Pizza’s hands shook as she read the report in the operating theater.

       There was just no way they should save her, looking back.

She didn’t have a bulletproof vest on, like the others.

The report didn’t say where it went, but later it was found on a dead kid.

The sacrifice,

went to waste.

Pizza glanced back at the body through the glass.

And in a bitter twist of fate, they were once again separated by glass,

duty, and law.

Pizza read Nuggets information.

  So, Chayanne was your name.

Age 26.

Born June 4th.

Daughter to two Marines.

I watched you go up, kinda.

And you, me.

Mine is Nahil.

I should’ve just told you my name.

Just yelled it.

I’m sorry.

Fate,

Sometimes brings two people together.

Sometimes it doesn't.

And sometimes it brings them together.

Just to rip them apart.

But in another life.

Nugget survived.

Pizza wasn’t late, but decided to try out a new coffee shop.

Nugget was in the medical program with Pizza.

There was no rusty chain linked fence.

Or even the roles were reversed and Pizza was the one on the table.

And in some other life.

This is all a story

Maybe even written by one of them.

In a universe where they know each other's names.

And in that life.

Fate finally succeeded.

Hello, all two of my followers! I mostly use Tumblr as an outlet for my weirdest meme choices...but lately I have found a higher purpose for it.

Here is a little background info...

I am 33 years old, i have a daughter who is 9. 2 years ago her dad moved away, it was a welcome move, we had been broken up for 2 years already and he was living in my apartment with me. Very problematic. He moved several states away and I was thrilled. However, my work schedule didn't lend itself to a single parent lifestyle. My daughter went with him. I had her for the summer last summer and then she came this summer to stay for the school year (my life is a little better and my work schedule jives with her school schedule).

Anyway, I was noticing things about her. She just didn't care to go outside and play with other kids this summer. She only wanted to be on her tablet. Her speech was lagging and regressing, she sounds like a 5 year old more often than she sounds like most 9 year olds. She would go through phases where she wouldn't be able to hold utinsels, one day she woke up for one of her first days of school and she couldn't fasten a button to save her life.

I'm a smart person. I am a little nerdy even. It's shocking that I've never in my 33 years bothered to look up anything about autism. So I start doing research. What I found will amaze you...click here for more! Haha...

Anyway...i found that many, MANY of my weird traits can be linked to autism spectrum disorder. Wow. Like...wow wow. I'm 33, aren't people diagnosed with autism when they are kids? How could I have not noticed this until now? How could my mother, who went to nursing school when I was a child, have overlooked this? Of course my daughter, who already is just like me, fits the mold. We both have a really hard time relating to people and being social. We have a hard time communicating our feelings. We both feel like aliens surrounded by all these normal regular humans. Out of place. Weird.

When I first started this journey, I had weird feelings about self dx-ers. That means someone who self diagnoses themselves as being on the spectrum. I did not feel like they were legit. Like a formal diagnosis is the only way you should be able to say you are on the spectrum. I now see that a lot of people self diagnose and while some may be wrong, a large portion of them do all of their homework and documentation and statements from other neurotypical (aka "normal") people who have known you for a while. My partner, Frank, has been a huge resource for me in my journey. I can ask him things about my behavior that I wouldn't notice myself. For instance, there have been a number of changes in my speech in the last several years, but lots of noticable changes in the last 10 months! I went to visit my daughter for her birthday in March, her dad had been causing me stress for months prior to that with odd threatening text messages and breaking promises that she would be coming to live with me permanently after the summer...i had my suspicions that things were not okay with him, and while I don't love him that way anymore it still caused me an immense amount of stress to know that the parent in charge of my child was basically unable to be meeting her needs. However I was not in a position where I could have taken her back home with me.

Anyway, I got confirmation from her dad through a whole lot of personal conversations he put me through...he was not doing good and when I came back from that vacation I was noticeably different. Although I didn't even notice it.

Since then I have started to stutter sometimes and I will frequently blank out and completely lose my train of thought midsentence. It's happened a few times even during this post. I am sorry if I sound rambly and it's hard to follow.

So what is next for me? I am still working on accepting my diagnosis as it is a self-dx right now, I am aware that it can be hard to get a formal diagnosis as a high functioning adult. I am not a different person with a new disorder...i have always had autism. It just now explains all of those weird things. I really honestly thought that adults just walked around in pain all the time about everything and never knew how to talk to each other.

What sucks is that now I am more aware of how I move and talk and stuff...anf I'm becoming more aware that it's just not "normal" and I don't know what to do about that. I don't want to keep trying to pass as neurotypical, but I'm not ready to "come out" at work as a person with autism. I work in a factory and it can be noisy but we have to wear earplugs and I double up on them (plugs and muffs) and the lights are only as annoying as regular florescent lights. Which I don't like but I can handle (most places of employment would have florescent lights anyway). I get left alone and I don't have to talk to people. It's perfect. I don't need to socialize so I don't even need to tell people at work. But I still feel like it is something I want to keep secret like people would treat me differently if they found out.

If you stuck around and read all of this I applaud you. I wanted to try and get my feelings out somewhere. It feels so good to find other people out there in the world like me. I am not alone. I am not just weird. I am one week into my self-dx process.

Philadelphia

I feel like the thought of Philadelphia is better than the eventuality. Don’t get me wrong, slathered (what a gross word) on a bagel? Woof. Pair that with some smoked salmon? Pret a Manger! It’s a classic combo and I’m not denying it. But living with an open tub of Philadelphia at home and feeling the weight of having to have it every day before the worm turns? It’s a pressure. The ticking clock before the Philadelphia water turns to mouldy wine. How many sittings does it take to cream a tub before it’s bone dry? Depends on your palette knife. There’s no decorum when it comes to cream cheese. You know how with Marmite (it’s a bit like Marmite) there’s an understanding that it’s a scant spread situation, like a delicate varnish? If you were to go in fearless with Marmite bystanders would presume you had never applied anything to toast before. It’s like that bit in Big Brother where someone murked Sree into putting raw bacon into a housemate’s sandwich because he’d never worked with rashers before. The recipient of the sandwich responded WTF as you’d imagine and Sree was unfairly placed under the nation’s microscope as the one adult who had never seen, let alone MADE, a sandwich before. Poor Sree. Anyways, what I’m saying is you can go crazy THICC with Philadelphia and onlookers wouldn’t bat an eyelid - even an alien could come to town and decanter a whole Philly oval relief, un-spread, on a piece of bread and you’d be all “…and?” 

I wanna say Philadelphia is like Polyfilla but I’ve never worked with that medium. It’s less a taste and more a feeling. A cooling agent. Touching the cold wall on a hot day. Facemask feels. Imagine upending it out of the tub and pressing your hand into it really slowly with the negative of your fingers rising in pleasing full-bodied form between the gaps of your digits. Mmm…tangible, calming...relief from the rat race. A reason to be put on earth. It’s the photoshopped cottage cheese, all cellulite eradicated. It’s not a loose mass, there’s a backbone there. You could probably pick it out like a briquette and attack it like a crisp, for a brief time period before the wet weight drifted in your grasp. The feeling to spoodge out a tub with a wooden spoon and plop it into a pan…to make some tragic recipe as instructed by Philadelphia propaganda. Not that I have, nor will I ever, but I can picture it leaving a slug trail on the side of a sauce pan on descent and standing there motionless watching it bubble at the base. I could imagine getting splinters in my tongue gumming the residue off the wooden spoon. Pleasure ist pain. Choke me, Daddy. 

I guess I’m just bored. Bored of having Philadelphia on boring brown Co-Op own brand bread. Toasting gives some integrity to the performance but on having two slices in the morning, I’ve already upped and left my body before finishing the emotionless transaction. If there was a way to absorb it contactlessly I probably would. Could just not have it, couldn’t I. After all this is day four after I rescued it from the reduced section of Co-Op but baby’s on a budget.

I hate Co-Op. Yet I find myself there most days, wandering around in my mental dressing gown, confused as to how I got there. As lifeless and uninspiring as I find the environment, it has to be said that Co-Op radio is almost unwavering in its high grade - and often resonant - tune selection. Pretty Woman by the big O, Take Me Out by Franz F, I Believe In You by Kylie. These are just some of the recent hits. Songs that shake you out of the monotony of trudging the aisles and make you want to swing your basket. Low key on some perfect pairings that lift one’s eyebrow at least and spirit at best, a soundtrack that makes you appreciate that you’re there…in the moment, by the Muller Rice. That feels like a legit feat to feel something, anything, in Co-Op. Occasionally they wield the axe a little close to the bone. For instance, I almost lost it recently when, on a somewhat low ebb, I saddled into Co-Op on a Friday evening solo mission on a reduced hunt to be greeted by the DJ dropping “Dry Your Eyes” by The Streets. What the fuck. What selector thinks it a reasonable decision to spin kitchen sink sombre bombs in one of the stalest surrounds you could wish to find yourself in at 6.30pm on a Friday night? Keep it light, for the love of God. Filthy Gorgeous by The Scissor Sisters. That kind of thing.

I picked up a reduced “Philadelphia with herbs” in Co-Op for 70p (RRP £1.99). A day later I’m wearily peeling back the foil and waging it onto some toast. All I can see is the Philadelphia is thick with chives. “Pfft” I think to myself, “Philadelphia with herbs? More like Philadelphia with CHIVES”. Oh well, carry on with my day and think nothing of it. Next morning I’m back in the standing up position smearing it on with aplomb. I’m reminded for the first time since the day prior of how chive heavy the spread is…like ten flecks a penny, I’ve not seen this many chives since I don’t know when. Since never? Since I looked at a chive plant next to a cress plant and thought…meh. I’m laughing in my head at this point, early morning delirium. “PHILADELPHIA WITH HERBS!? MORE LIKE PHILADELPHIA WITH CHIVES!!”. Haha. I’m still chuckling in my head as I reach for the tub. It seems entirely feasible at this point that this is a dud batch, a freak chive breakout edition that slipped the net. Wait, are chives even a herb? Aren’t they part of the onion family? This makes it even more obtuse. Maybe I can write to Philadelphia and get some free Philadelphia. Maybe the Metro will do a piece about my hardship. I’m reaching for the tub to inspect it for further signs of error. Is this a meme? The reduced sticker on top of the tub obscures most of the lid so I swivel my head to inspect the side of the vessel and my eyes fall on one crucial detail. The name on the side of the tub that was masked by the reduced sticker on the top. The title read…



“Philadelphia with chives”

 Oh. 

 Lol. Why did I think it was herbs? I’m writing this here to save myself the horror of accidentally relaying this story to anybody in real life. It feels like a weight off. Thank God. I just swerved that ever happening. Imagine if I was halfway through telling my neighbour that chive/herb tale, every moment regretting it like treading out onto ever thinning ice, and then others starting tuning in and asking me to tell it from the top. Imagine if the audience doubled at every utterance of the word “chive”. Imagine being in a job interview and being asked three words to describe yourself and the only words you can think of are “Philadelphia”, “herbs” and “chives”. Then you just say them because you can’t pluck anything else. Then you’re forced into recounting this story before a panel of four stone faced interviewees. And they’re dragons. On Dragons’ Den. And it’s on Britain’s Got Talent and everybody in the audience, both on TV and at home, are doing THAT Amanda Holden reaction face. Frozen. Forever.

The Doctor Falls

I am REALLY glad I took a week off from checking my dashboard because I was not aware that last week was the season finale of Doctor Who. I was like "I missed episode 12, there’s 13 episodes in each season, so I guess this season finale’s a 3-parter again and it ends next week! So I can catch up before the finale!”

But NOPE. IT WAS THE FINALE. THIS SEASON ONLY HAD 12 EPISODES. I MISSED THE DOCTOR WHO FINALE. WITHOUT EVEN REALIZING IT. I AM SO GLAD I DECIDED TO MAKE SURE TO AVOID SPOILERS THIS WEEK. OH MY GOD.

Though I did get spoiled for something a few days ago, but I can’t remember what it was right now. Which is good. It’s basically almost like I wasn’t spoiled at all.

On that note. Guys. Just putting “Spoilers!” in the title or in the text of your post isn’t enough, please tag things as “Doctor Who Spoilers” or “DW Spoilers”. Or at least put the spoilers under Read More.

Ok. Time for the Doctor Who finale. Which obviously, since I didn’t know it was the finale until just now before starting this episode, I am not at all ready for it. I thought I had another week to mentally prepare for this but nope. I mean, since I’m watching it a week later I guess I had an extra week, but I mean an extra week where I’d KNOW I’d be watching the finale in a week.

Let’s see if my wifi will work with me for the hour and a half it will take to watch this episode. Super bad quality, took forever to buffer, so far it’s only kinda working. Ugh. UMM. UMMMM. UMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM. THE CYBERMEN ARE ON THOSE THINGS THAT HOLD UP SCARECROWS. THIS IS FAMILY OF BLOOD ALL OVER AGAIN. UMMMMMMMM THE SKY ISN’T REALLY SKY.... UMMM THE NICE MOTHERLY LADY HAS A GUN NOW. OH HELL NAH THAT’S TERRIFYING THEY’RE LIMPING TOWARDS THEM. “IT’S THE SCARECROWS. NEW ONES.” UMMMMMMM NAH. AND THEY JUST HANG UP THE BODIES? WHAT THE HELL. This music is very Old Who based on the few Old Who episodes I’ve seen. That makes me kind of happy. OK. HAPPINESS FROM THE MUSIC IS GONE BECAUSE BILL IS CARRYING THE DOCTOR’S LIMP BODY. While the opening credits are playing I just need to say, Capaldi, I am going to miss you so much. So so so much. I adored Capaldi’s Doctor. He was amazing. I love him so much. I miss him so much already. Missy, girl, I had so much hope for you. I’m enjoying this Master Missy banter though. “Ten years, you spent up there, chatting. You missed her by 2 hours.” THAT’S HORRIBLE. Prepare for a lot of capslock in this post. I hear the music again. From last episode. “This is Gallifrey” I think? “You two, you should know by now, when you’re winning, and I’m in the room, you’re missing something.” THAT IS AN AMAZING QUOTE TO DESCRIBE THE DOCTOR. YES. “Knock yourself out.” *Missy knocks out the Master* MISSY YES GIRL. BILL YES GIRL. Ok but what I can’t get my brain around is like... going from floor to floor is technically time travel... which is amazing... but they’re REALLY stuck... because of time...  UMM. BILL. GIRL. WHY ARE YOU NORMAL SUDDENLY?! Oh. She’s imagining herself as normal. Great. JELLY BABY. SO MUCH OLD WHO. DO ALL CYBERMEN SEE THEMSELVES AS THEIR OLD SELVES AT FIRST? She’s crying real tears! Fuck you, Master. I usually don’t hate you. But oh my god. I mean. At least the monotone voice hides emotion... I just went and fangirled to my dad about David Bradley for like 5 straight minutes because he’s the only person awake and I needed to get these feels out verbally. And then just about the episode in general for another 5 minutes. Oh my god. This is too much for 2am.

I just can’t put into words how excited I am. Because David Bradley blew me completely away in An Adventure in Space and Time and we get to see him as the First Doctor and just... oh my god. Oh my god.

Heather coming back for Bill seems almost deus ex machina like but she did leave her her tears and Bill the cyberman cried tears so like whatever, I get it. But believe me, Heather was the LAST person I expected to see. If we had had puddles hidden everywhere throughout the season, that would have been better since there would have been constant hints. Unless... there were puddles everywhere... and no one noticed... or at least I didn’t notice... because puddles are so subtle and common... Am I going to have to rewatch this entire season and look for puddles now?

I’m rereading my post about The Pilot just to see what my thoughts were the first time and I had apparently noticed that there was a picture of Susan on his desk next to River’s, so WERE THEY FORESHADOWING THE FIRST DOCTOR RETURNING FROM THE VERY BEGINNING!? OH MY GOD.

Ok basically. I wish Bill wasn’t leaving. I adored Bill. She needs to come back. At some point. I liked Heather, so once I got over the initial “WHAT THE HELL IS HAPPENING” aspect of her return I was happy. And I’m glad that Bill doesn’t have to suffer as a Cyberman for the rest of her life, she gets to go off and travel the universe as an immortal puddle with her immortal puddle girlfriend. Yeah. My only complaint really is that she shouldn’t have been able to fly the TARDIS; “I’m the pilot” doesn’t feel like enough of an explanation.

As for the Doctor. Oh Doctor. I wanted to cry. But then the First Doctor came out of nowhere and I need to go see if I can rewatch that scene on YouTube or something because now it’s all a blur of me just freaking out and silently screaming.

Oh wow. The clip is only a minute and 20 seconds long. It felt like a lifetime. Time honestly slowed down when I watched this the first time.

AHHHH I DIDN’T NOTICE HIM GRABBING THE LAPELS OF HIS COAT. YES. YES DAVID BRADLEY. YES. GOD. THEY LITERALLY COULD NOT HAVE PICKED ANYONE BETTER TO PLAY HIM. OH MY GOD.

CHRISTMAS. YOU’RE MAKING ME WAIT UNTIL CHRISTMAS. That was actually my first thought when I had closed this post in order to “calm down” for a minute. I literally pressed save draft, and then looked into space, and whisper/screamed “...Christmas?!?!?!?!” HOW DO YOU EXPECT ME TO WAIT UNTIL CHRISTMAS?! THAT’S IN ALMOST 6 MONTHS. COME ON. But this means Capaldi gets to stay the Doctor for 6 more months and that’s fantastic.

On that note. Honestly, you guys should all congratulate me on how well I avoided spoilers. I didn’t even know this was the finale, so I’m REALLY glad I picked this episode of all episodes to be like “Nope. Not going on my dashboard because I follow people who like to post spoilers without tagging them. I’ll just avoid my dashboard until I have time to watch the episode” and that was almost a week later. Wow.

Also I never remembered what it was about this episode that I was spoiled for earlier this week, so my brain blocked something out correctly for once.

[Fan Account] ai-da-ice at Tokyo’s Tonikaku HEY Pre-release Event/Handshake Meeting

So, previously I wrote a guide to attending in-store-lives after going to FlowBack’s for their single “Booyah!”, but a pre-release in-store or live event is a slightly different beast since you can’t just buy a physical copy at the store and receive a lottery ticket. I went into this experience of going to a pre-release event for Tonikaku HEY a little blind, not really understanding how it would work but praying I would figure it out as I went along. Still, since I’ve had a bit of bad luck attending events such as missing the priority seating ticketing (Da-iCE’s Stickyle event), getting the worst lottery number and missing the autograph session (FlowBack’s in-store), and getting on the wrong train and blowing some of my shopping money on taxi fare (Chiruran), I was actually expecting for things to go wrong, but I think it went incredibly smoothly, so I’m a little shocked!

These were the basics I knew before the event: at 9, the venue (in this case, a pretty decently sized stage near the movie theater MOVIX at a shopping village in Akishima) would begin opening preorders for Tonikaku HEY as well as the handshake tickets, which vary from order to order. Basically, if you pre-ordered one album, you could get a ticket to have a brief handshake with all the members. If you pre-ordered all three versions, you could get an extra ticket for a longer handshake with an individual member. At 10, you could start participating in the priority seating lottery (sticking your hand in a mystery box and pulling out a ticket to determine how close to the stage you will be) after you secured your pre-order receipt. At 2 PM, the mini-live would begin.

Naturally, I was wondering about the huge gap between drawing the lottery at 10 and the actual performance starting at 2, so I was thinking I would have a lot of extra free time in Akishima. I even skipped breakfast, thinking I’d grab something when I was there. Also, since most of the events I had been to in Japan thus far hadn’t been big on letting people line up too early, I decided to arrive exactly at 9 for the preorders.

This wound up being kind of a mistake, although it wasn’t one with as many consequences as I had thought. When I arrived at the venue, the line was snaking all over the place and was looooooong. I arrived at 9, but didn’t even reach the pre-order tent until closer to 12. Naturally, I severely regretted skipping breakfast. Luckily, they played Da-iCE’s “Next Phase” album to keep us entertained, but it was still a long wait. Here’s an idea of what the line was like:

There were a few downsides to this other than just waiting a long time and starving, though, like I said, nothing wound up being too big of a deal in the end. One was that we were allowed to choose which member we wanted to do the individual handshake with, and they had a limited number of tickets for each member, to keep everyone from all going to the exact same person and having one member with a gazilion more visitors than another. Sota’s tickets ran out pretty early into my wait, and Taiki ran out about an hour later, and so on. Also the priority seating tickets were also a limited number, so I was pretty convinced I’d miss out on both since I was so far back in the line.

As I finally got close to the pre-order booth, I received a form to fill out to let the staff know which albums I wanted. At that point, the all-member handshake tickets were available and Toru and Yudai hadn’t sold out yet, so I opted to pre-order all three versions and go for the individual member handshake if it was still available. Toru and Yudai are about equal in popularity, so I wasn’t sure which would run out first, and I didn’t mind handshaking with either because I love them both, so I waited to see which tickets were left before writing down which handshake I wanted. The form was fairly simple Japanese, so I was able to understand most of it-- you could choose whether you wanted the albums shipped to you or if you wanted to pick them up in Akishima. The shipping cost was actually cheaper than a round ticket back to Akishima for me, so I decided to have them shipped.

When I arrived at the pre-order booth, I was relieved that both the member handshake and individual handshake tickets were still available. Phew! I wound up with Yudai’s individual ticket, which I was very excited about. Unfortunately, the priority seating tickets were all gone (the bad luck finally strikes!), but the venue was set up in such a way that even people outside of the priority area were close, and when we actually got into the mini-live, the members looked at our area to the side frequently.

By time all this was finished, it was already around 12:30, so I made a break for the vending area so I could finally get something to drink and eat. I was a bit short on money, so I wound up getting an ice cream cone from the 17 Ice machine (the company Da-iCE/AAA/TRF rep for-- Hayate was on the vending machine), which also was kind of a mistake since it was very hot and promptly melted all over my hands. But since I got the handshake tickets I wanted, nothing could bother me. (Naturally, I washed my hands right away after finishing my messy ice cream out of respect for the members haha)

Around 1ish, the priority people started being admitted, and at a little after 1:30ish, guess who appeared a bit early...Sota and Yudai!! The two did a mic test and rehearsed Tonikaku HEY and Paradive right in front of us! Of course, this was just to check their mics and make sure the speakers were positioned correctly, so it wasn’t a full vocal performance, but it was still amazing to see them a little extra! They even had a little bit of audience participation by having us sing the songs when they were adjusting their sound sets.

At promptly two, the full group came onstage to kick off with Tonikaku HEY... or at least they tried to, but there was a slight technical difficulty in the intro, and they had to stand on stage for a second waiting for the music to come back on. Then it was off to showcasing their new single. It’s definitely a song suited to live performance like all their summer releases, and calls for several instances of audience participation through chanting the “HEY!” part along with them and mimicking the choreo during the chorus. I think it’s a really fun release which blends retro and modern music and am looking forward to the full release.

After, the five members had an MC about several subjects including the recently wrapped up Chiruran performances and Golden Week, the holiday going on in Japan right now which is one of the reasons the stage was so crowded--students are out of school, and a lot of adults are also off of work. They also did a brief Q&A, which I’d normally love to translate, but i‘m not quite sure what the audience members said because of the high levels of wind during the performance. I have a feeling there was something about ideal types and something about food based on Da-iCE’s responses. Da-iCE also went through and asked what areas of Japan we all came from. Since it was Golden Week, several people had come from quite far since they had the vacation time.

With the MC finished, they moved on to their final song, their hit from last summer “Paradive”! This song is truly a fan favorite for several reasons, but mainly because there is a lot of fan participation from the towel twirling during the chorus to the “HEY!” fan chants during the “come on and feel the heat...” breakdown. The energy whenever “Paradive” is performed at an event is crazy.

Since it was a mini-live, there were only those two songs, but thanks to the hand-shake event, there was still plenty to do afterwards. The group handshake was first, and went by pretty quickly-- I would say you have about time enough to say one quick thing to the members before being pushed along. I decided just to go for “ganbarimashita”-- “You did a great job”--since it’s short and to the point.

If I’m remembering correctly, the handshake order went Taiki-Toru-Yudai-Hayate-Sota. Though it was brief, it was a legit handshake where they clasped your hand in both of their hands while make eye contact. 3/5 members said “Thank you for coming” to me in English (Taiki, Toru, and Sota), while Hayate and Yudai said “arigatou”. Toru and Sota seemed to remember me from Chiruran since they both said “Thanks for coming again” T^T. For both Toru and Sota, I responded coolly with “Oh, it’s no problem,” but YES, it was a problem, because I felt ready to die of happiness~

I was naturally freaking out, but had to run back to the other side of the venue where everyone was lining up for individual handshakes. How this worked was after the group handshakes were over, the members went backstage to change out of their Tonikaku costumes, and the staff set up queues using partitions in front of the place each member would be standing. We lined up behind the signs of whatever member we had a ticket for. If people ordered A LOT of albums, they could potentially have multiple tickets, but they were advised to line up in the longest line first, and if there was enough time, to go back to another line to handshake with a second member. However, there was a cut off point for the event so the members wouldn’t be there all day (once again, it was quite hot).

Since I always blank out when speaking to idols, this time I spent some time practicing the general idea of what I would say depending on which member I was shaking hands with. I had to wait in Yudai’s queue for about twenty minutes before reaching him, so I felt like I was ready by time I reached him. Of course my heart was fluttering like crazy, but I stepped up, and he took both of my hands, and the following conversation occurred (in Japanese):

Yudai: Hello again, do you speak any Japanese? Me: Yes, a little. I met you last year in California. Yudai: Oh, that was [he couldn’t remember the name of which city]... Me: San Jose Yudai: Yes! Waaa, you came so far Me: I'm really happy I got to meet you again Yudai-kun! Yudai: Yes, me too me too (in English) me too 😃

Unfortunately, since my Japanese is so slow, that’s all we were able to say, but just having a longer length conversation with him made me so happy. Yudai, I’ll work harder next time!

After that, I was about ready to pass out from lack of food, so I had to hurry home. But overall, this was one of my most special experiences with Da-iCE. They’ve been so kind by greeting me in English all the time, but I’m going to improve my Japanese more so I can be more confident next time!!

So today was interesting. Overall better than the rest of this week, though I probably couldn't point you to any specific factors there. I guess I just mentally felt better so things followed that. Morning was a bit of a lol, my alarm goes off at 7, I turn it off and pick up my phone, then close my eyes for a few seconds. When I open my eyes, my phone now reads 7:40. What the fuck??? Like okay, it wouldn't be the first time I've over slept an alarm, but doing it just like that was weird. Thankfully it left me just enough time to get to work mostly on time if I ubered instead of took public transit, so I did a mostly normal morning routine and then ubered to work, getting there at 9:05 so that's enough for me to call it a win, if an accidental one. So for the morning I did some of my paperwork setting up the timeline from the other day, and about mid-morning I think I popped over to see if our tech guy was in and he was, so I let him know that I still couldn't get the prison calls to play on my computer which I felt bad about because they'd already like, switched out a computer and everything to make this work haha. But he was like nah it's cool, imma call my supervisor and we'll take care of this. And a little while later they came and did something (while I sat on the chair on the other side of my desk and scrolled through Facebook on my phone) and pretty soon they had it up and working. Okay, I forget if I provided any context for this when I first mentioned them, but I don't think I did so I'll give some here. To my understanding, we have recordings of prison phone calls from a man and the mother of his daughter, who is in DCFS custody. I'm not totally sure here, but I think he might've been in prison for some sort of child abuse (I don't think it was sexual, probably aggravated battery to a child). But basically they want to argue in court that mom is gonna get back together with dad when he gets out which would put their daughter in danger and they shouldn't regain custody, so the attorney wanted me to go through the phone calls between the two of them to see if there was any talk about getting back together or anything about their daughter specifically, them trying to get her back. So I set off with 530 audio recordings, most of them listed under "time limit exceeded" for reason of termination, which means they were 30 minutes long. WOAHBOY. So the first few I listened to were in the early days of his prison sentence and they had lots of good stuff for me to write down, but they started getting more monotonous so I like, checked my email and did some other random shit while still listening (I didn't read any fic, because I knew if I did that I probably wouldn't N able to focus on the calls). Soon enough I switch over to the more recent calls (so switch from August 2016 to March 2017) and suddenly there's a much different tone. The first one had them arguing over the fact that he said he'd call her right at 8:45 and he called her at 8:46, which I was laughing at pretty hard. Fun little prison break reference here, but the prison is called "Big Muddy River Correctional Center" located in Illinois, which of course isn't too far off from "Fox River Correctional Center (or facility?)" also fictionally in Illinois. So that made me smirk a little. So I kept listening, and then they decided to have phone sex, and I was very thankful for the fast forward button because having to listen to that I'm pretty sure is a violation of my 8th amendment constitutional right against cruel and unusual punishment. Lol. But for the most of the afternoon I just let the conversations play (I had headphones in so they weren't being broadcasted to the whole office) and noted when they said something relevant. For the record, they didn't need to talk about getting back together because OH, THEY'RE TOGETHER, and there was plenty of mentions of "getting their daughter back" (smh). So then I was just left to marvel at the strange range of tasks my job has me carrying out, lol. But anyway. My physical therapy options were pretty limited this week since I could only come after work and my normal guy is in Europe, and despite being there yesterday the only other appointment I could get this week was for tonight at 6, and of course I get off of work at 5. I figured if I ubered though I could probably make it with enough time to run to my apartment and get changed from my suit into physical therapy appropriate clothing, lol, however, my uber driver didn't take the best route and we got caught in traffic and I didn't end up getting to PT until 6:20 and I was such not a happy camper because if you pay attention on here at all, you know being late is my biggest pet peeve possible. It was okay though, it was just a little shorter of a session. Not a big deal. Now we just know 6 pm appointments are a no-go, lol. The girl I worked with was fine, I like my regular guy so I was kind of meh about working with other people but she was nice enough and she did a pretty good job, so that's good. When I finished there I walked back home and ate some dinner- I forget if I ever discussed my weird eating issue I've developed lately on here so I'm just gonna talk about it now. For weeks now, no matter what my big weekend meal I use for leftovers throughout the week is, when it comes to eating those leftovers it feels like I have to shove the food into my mouth. And then I get stuck in the whole quandary of "oh well I should eat it anyway because it's healthy" ("healthy") and no, don't force yourself to eat something you don't want to, but obviously a ton of meals I make have been going to waste because of this and I have no idea what to do about it. This week I was gonna try to really test it because I did my creamy Parmesan chicken pasta (I definitely mentioned that on here recently, but I don't remember the rest of the context) which is like phenomenal and I'd see if I had an issue with that, and yupp, when it came down to eating the chicken it felt like shoving concrete in my mouth. This is a totally new and out of nowhere development?? Like this has never been an issue before. And it's not just chicken, because I've tried other meats and it's the same thing (I can have like, two slices of turkey on a mini sandwich, but that's really nothing). And I just don't know what to do about this because I feel like I started the whole weekend meal thing because I wanted to make sure I was getting enough protein in my diet, because I wasn't really eating meat unless I was intentional about it.
