#they only get to be the queerest twins
crypticpaw · 1 year
Note
Do you have any headcanons for the ROTTMNT guys?
OMG, DO I?!? I have lots, actually!
Leo:
Gay. A fruit. CEO of the skiddle squad. Queerest of all the turtles combined
Donnie's twin and the youngest between them, only older than Mikey
Has really bad insomnia, especially after the movie and the stuff with the Kraang, because of nightmares
Took spanish classes with Señor Hueso just because he though it was cool, but now whenever he gets into an argument with someone he just starts speaking spanish and nobody can understand him
Absolute gossip king, wants to know everything about everyone and if you have any secrets whatsoever, Leo will find out about it, whether you like it or not
On the same note, he's an amazing secret keeper. If you directly ask him to not tell anyone, he won't
That doesn't aply to his own crushes, he will gush and sigh like an idiot under some love-spell, kicking up his legs with his face all red
Red-Eared Sliders actually hiss and huff whenever they get angry, and Leo does too
Dating Usagi
Donnie:
Non-Binary and Bisexual, he/him pronouns
Leo's twin and the oldest between them, only younger than Raph
Sensory seeker autistic with a special interest in technology, but knows about biology too
Also very invested in gossip, will listen to whatever stories Leo brings and add his own too. Donnie, however, could not keep a secret if his life depended on it
The one who actually met April. He was out collecting trash and scraps for his inventions and she followed him, they've been bestest of friends ever since
Pettiest turtle you will ever meet in your life. Seriously, do not piss him off, he will take revenge and you will regret it for the rest of your life
Tried drawing his eyebrows on his skin when he was a tot and had a very bad sensory ick, like, a full shut-down. So he started drawing them on his bandana instead
Sleeps cuddled with Sheldon like he's a stuffed animal
Has the voice of an angel. For real, this guy can sing like a rockstar, sometimes sings outloud as a stim and his brothers just gather around him to hype him up because Donnie is just THAT good!
Raph:
Transgender boy who loves to dress in a more femine style. Paints his nails and knows everything about makeup
Oldest of all the brothers
Has the biggest collection of stuffed animals in New York. They all have names, backstories, personalities and outfits he likes to dress them up with
Roars. Actual, loud, bellowing roars. When Raph let out his first roar as a little tot, Splinter actually thought there was a monster in the lair
Accidentally hurt their father one day while training and cried about it for weeks on end, feels terrible about it to this day
Solves all his problems with his sharp teeth, the power of his bite can crush a grown man in half like a twig
Raph actually has lost a lot of teeth because of this. Donnie had to replace a lot of them and you know he asked for a little extra sharp gold tooth that peeks out of his mouth sometimes
Loves swimming, will toss himself in the nearest body of water that looks deep enough for him, spends the most time in the bath out of all the turtles
Will stop to pet every single dog he sees walking down the streets, even if it's in the middle of a mission
Mikey:
Aroace royalty who don't need no romance!
Youngest of all the brothers
Diagnosed ADHD. Has comited arson and will do it again
His room is covered in stickers and posters from floor to roof, it's diffucult to tell where the walls or doors are
Misses Karai the most. He got so quickly attached to her, sometimes Mikey dreams that she's still there and when he wakes up and realises she's not, he tries to go back to sleep only to start crying
If you ever gift him something you made with your own hands, like a hand-written letter, card, DIY project, he will absolutely die for you no questions asked
An actual contorcionist. Will pull the most mind-blowing circus move you've ever seen in your life mid-battle like it's nothing. This boy has no bones, the most athletic of all his brothers
The first to really reach full potential of his powers and has the better control of it out of the whole family
Also, all of them can retrach into their shells, all of them! I don't know why only Mikey got to do that in the actual show!

HEADCANONS TIME :D (mostly Leo don't come at me)
-When Leo gets hurt, he usually takes care of his injuries alone and doesn't tell anyone because they worry a lot and it overwhelms her.
-All the brothers like to sleep with fluffy things like hoodies and plushies (this is called projecting).
-Raph got the twins matching plushies for their 10th birthday (don't ask what the plushies are or how he got them shhh) The twins still have them and use them for comfort.
-Mikey and Leo spray paint together. Mikey usually does murals and Leo does stupid memes (or that cool text thing too).
-Leo had a secret room in the old lair where he would hide when he was stressed. He doesn't have that anymore so now he just sits in a corner of her room.
-All the brothers have noise cancelling headphones. Donnie and Mikey use them the most though.
-Both twins have insomnia and they found out about each other's when they were about 8. They looked for ways to 'prevent' it, but none of them worked. So they just stay in a single room together when it's a particularly bad night.
-Mikey absolutely falls asleep in the turtle tank on their way back home after a mission ('cmon this was obvious).
-When they were younger, Leo and Donnie would cry if they were separated.
-Raph is very overprotective of Mikey (older brother syndrome), so the twins try to be less intrusive. They still worry, of course, but they let Mikey make his own decisions and respect boundaries. Mikey appreciates this more than they'll ever know.
-In a Leosagi scenario, Usagi fell first and Leo was the oblivious dumbass.
-Leo has a skincare routine. It's April's fault I think.
-The only one unaffected by Mikey's puppy dog eyes is Leo. But he'll still do something Mikey asks her to do because he thinks it's funny.
-Actually, most decisions Leo makes are based around 'would it be funny?' and the answer is pretty much always 'yes'.
-Mikey and Raph are into fantasy while Leo and Donnie are more Sci-fi.
-Donnie was the first of the turtles to talk fluent english and read. With Leo being a close second.
-Leo taught himself to read at some point but pretended she didn't to Donnie because she's a little shit like that /affectionate.
-Donnie is autistic, Leo has ADHD and Raph and Mikey have both.
-Leo flaps her arms a lot when he's excited. He also does little taps with his fingers when she's stressed.
The queer ones:
-Leo and Donnie watched Rise Of The Guardians together. This is how they found out Leo was gay. (Leo had a crush on Jack Frost don't deny it I'm right).
-April found out she was a lesbian with the 'Magnet' music video (absolutely one of the queerest songs I have ever heard. Miku and Luka <3).
-Raph is a lesbian and Mikey I feel pansexual or aroace, maybe both?
-Donnie is bisexual and a hopeless romantic while Leo is gay and falls somewhere on the aroace spectrum.
-Raph and Mikey go by all pronouns, Leo goes by he/her and Donnie goes by he/they.
Will add more maybe probably

making a post about my current personal theories for s4 (not backed up by any leaks or anything, just my own takes) to laugh at when i'm proven wrong in five days:
byler canon, or almost canon (as in, confirmation that mike has feelings for will)
ronance tension (the romantic kind), not canon but hinted at like byler has been
steve almost dies but doesn't because the duffers know we'd storm their homes
nancy dies? doesn't go with the ronance theory, so maybe she almost dies
a member of the party dies, not will or el
erica has the brain cell in the creel house
kali/eight is connected to that first 8-minute scene
those creepy little twins in that scene will either show up again or be hinted at returning
jopper reunion at the end of part one?
the steveddie dynamic will be hilarious, probably not hinted at beyond the vest, but that's arguably the queerest thing ever /pos
murray will mention something byler-related to joyce or jonathan instead of him talking to them directly
most of the new characters will die (hopefully not eddie)
vecna will use max's relationship with billy's death to attempt to manipulate her (it will probably work for a little while)
el & hopper reunion at the end of part 2
lucas gets more of an arc (i think this is confirmed)
dustin calls mr. clarke with a question about one of his curiosity voyages
one or two appearances from suzie (suzy? idk which way its spelled)
please dear god give me nancy asking robin if she and steve are dating after assuming so for a WHILE and robin being like "ew gross, no" i'm begging
jargyle weed buddies not ever talked about but obvious
el rocks everyone's shit when she gets her powers back
jancy amicable breakup?
hopper and the byers return to hawkins
something real real bad happens in the upside down as a result of vecna, either he releases something else when he dies, or he stirs shit up within and we see things get worse at the end of the season (does this make sense? not really)
we see more of the party's parents more frequently (aside from karen and joyce)
more hints at more numbers still being alive
weirdest theory i have, so this is the one i'm ending on: we find out ted is somehow connected to the lab, whether he used to work there or anything like that
we'll see if any of this turns out being true, there's only a couple i'm very confident in, the rest are things i think could realistically happen

hey uh 8 months ago u posted: "i might compile a list of kdramas that either have very cool queer-coded characters, are explicitly queer, or just have a very queer vibe just to fuck around again so".. did u by chance ever post it? if u havent, no worries, but if u have the time, i would love to get ur recs- especially those w/ queer-coded characters or just a queer vibe (im researching q-coding for something im working)
aaah, thank you for reminding me of that list! i've actually got some time to kill (more like i'm procrastinating going to sleep), so actually, here's a list now!:
beyond evil
Tumblr media
this show just immediately becomes number one on my list when it comes to queerness, queer coding, or almost explicitly a queer story in ways that i really just . . . have not stopped thinking about ever since watching this show. basically, this show is about lee dong sik (shin ha kyun) who, twenty years ago, was accused of kidnapping and possibly murdering his twin sister. now, hot shot new detective han joo won (yeo jin goo) starts working in dong sik's small town. when the murders start up again, these two go down a long path in finding out the truth of what happened those twenty years ago. the acting is just phenomenal: yeo jin goo and shin ha kyun are truly an acting match made in heaven, just because both are insanely talented.
what makes this story incredibly queer, i think, is just the relationship between han joo won and lee dong sik. neither are very much so interested in a heterosexual romance, which is interesting, because there are def. female characters that could have been their love interests, but not once is that ever enforced or even implied? i also have a post here somewhere about how dong sik in particular is pretty queer or expresses queer-coded traits (ie. his relationship with religion, his relationship with past male colleagues, his tendency to flirt exclusively with men), and han joo won expresses similarities (ie. unwillingness to engage in romantic relationships with women in particular). but more than that, these two share just such a deep relationship that it's incredibly difficult not to see them as romantic--it's also worth noting that the writer, director, and cast members themselves have very much so worked this story into something that's much more romantic. (ie. the writer and director noting that these two have a relationship that has very much evolved into love, yeo jin goo talking about how he thinks han joo won probably moved in with dong sik, shin ha kyun and yeo jin goo heavily improvising some of the most . . . romantic scenes in the show).
there's a lot of shows that i've been told are queer, only to be very sorely disappointed because i realize those particular recs take a very long stretch, but beyond evil is one of those few shows that i think. genuinely. is queer. i promise you won't be disappointed.
school 2013
Tumblr media
and yet another show that i think is perhaps one of the queerest stories out in kdrama history. i'm pretty sure this was both lee jong suk and kim woo bin's debuts as actors too, which is such an iconic move on their part. but basically, this series is about the difficulties high school students go through in the korean education system. while this story is very much an ensemble story, jong suk's character go nam soon is, i think, the main character. he's not very academically inclined, doesn't have too much of a dream...and i think he genuinely is depressed because he hurt and separated himself from his best friend park heung soo (kim woo bin). things become very complicated when his best friend transfers to nam soon's new school, only now, these two are something between enemies/rivals/ex-friends-who-still-care-about-each-other-but-still-hold-a-lot-of-resentment-and-etc. so you can imagine all the angst.
there's some genuinely lovely scenes between the two of them. also worth noting that kim woo bin actually kissed lee jong suk (yes, there are photos) behind the scenes for one of the most dramatic scenes of the show. there's another rather queer pairing in this show (more like a queer . . . trio?), but the story between heung soo and nam soon is just such a key component of the story that i had to mention it first. this show def. has its cheesy moments, but nam soon and heung soo sleeping next to each other time and time again over the course of the series and also very slowly getting over their own hurts is just . . . this is very much so a love story, and i think when this show was airing, a lot of people were speculating the same. (also worth noting that jang na ra, who played the iconic teacher jung in jae in this series, explained in an interview that she genuinely things heung soo and nam soon love each other . . . so--)
sungkyunkwan scandal
Tumblr media
ah, yes, but if we're getting a teensy bit past queer-coded-ness and instead moving into explicitly queer characters, i just have to mention this saeguk classic, sungkyunkwan scandal. this show is about an intelligent young woman named kim yoon hee (park min young) who, for the sake of money, pretends to be a man to enter the nation's most prestigious (and still one of the most prestigious universities today!) university, sungkyunkwan university. in the process, she meets her roommates--the stiff son of a government official lee sun joon (park yoo chun) and the wild horse of a student moon jae shin (yoo ah in). along the way, she also meets moon jae shin's best friend, the flirty son of a merchant goo yong ha (song joong ki).
what i really love about this kdrama is that unfortunately, a lot of kdramas will take the whole "gender bending" trope and have the main male love interest(s) go through this whole existential crisis of "oh my god aM i gAy? tHis iS aWfuL", which, of course, leaves a pretty bad taste in your mouth when you're, y'know, a queer viewer. but what i love about this drama is that while it def. starts with that reaction (understandable, given the era), it actually goes into a wonderfully progressive direction? even though the protagonist is a woman, the main male love interest very much so decides "okay, fine. then i'm gay." but it doesn't stop there?
there's a lot of characters who point out in this show that it's not a crime to love someone of the same sex. in one specific moment, goo yong ha confesses to lee sun joon that he has romantic feelings for his best friend moon jae shin--and jae shin and yong ha's relationship is very much so . . . queer. a very genuine gem.
while you were sleeping
Tumblr media
okay . . . so full disclosure, this is probably one of those that are more of a stretch, but so many people ship all three leads together, so that's why i'm including them. also, i really do think they're all bisexual and in love with each other, so it works.
basically, this show is about three extraordinary individuals: nam hong joo (bae suzy), jung jae chan (lee jong suk), and han woo tak (jung hae in). these three can see snippets of the future in their dreams. by fate, all of their lives get entangled together, and what's really lovely about this show is that while the two male leads are in love with the main female lead, there's never . . . a real sense of a love triangle? these three work incredibly harmoniously together. (also, some of jung jae chan's scenes with han woo tak can very . . . easily be interpreted as ohhhh, he's got a crush. also, these three characters just radiate so many parts of the bisexual spectrum. hong joo and woo tak are on the very competent, distinguished bisexual side of the spectrum, while jae chan . . . jae chan's on the chaotic side. which is why i love them all.)
nevertheless
Tumblr media
okay, so another full disclosure with this one: nevertheless is one of those shows that i just wish was better and also a show that i skipped about like 95% of the scenes, because the show is actually about the art student na bi (han so hee) dating the mYstEriOus student park jae eon (song kang). (spoiler alert: park jae eon is the walking example of a red flag.)
but ANYWAYS, if we look over their scenes (i love han so hee and song kang, they really are both lovely actors . . . and i think to be fair, they both said in interviews that people like park jae eon suck), we can find the genuinely touching coming-of-age queer romance between yoon sol (lee ho jung) and seo ji wan (yoon seo ah). these two are canonically in love with each other, and it's really genuinely lovely. i feel like wlw relationships in kdrama are specifically hard to come by, but this one, for its little screen time, was still so genuinely heartfelt and authentic that (okay, maybe i'm oversharing a bit) i felt as though i was really reading a page out of my own diary? like, the tentativeness and fear of potentially ruining a perfectly good friendship is so real in this show--but they really are quite sweet. :'))
shows i haven't watched, but i've heard very good things in terms of queerness/are now on my watch list because i've heard it's . . . got some queer-coded characters/queer stories:
the devil judge
Tumblr media
okay, so i'm planning to watch this soon, so i don't have real thoughts on it so far, but as far as i can tell, it's about a dystopian korea where the legal system is especially fucked up. the chief judge and his . . . clerk? co-judge? share a very . . . . . . interesting bond. that's it. but i do know there's been some parallels drawn to beyond evil, which i still think is the peak of queerness in korean drama, so i suppose that must mean something!
move to heaven
Tumblr media
so, while move to heaven isn't literally about a gay couple, this show is about a young man and his . . . uncle (? or friend? idk, i've only watched the first episode of this show) who basically clean out the apartments of those who have passed away, thereby giving some sense of healing to their loved ones. there's one episode about a gay couple, and i've heard it's incredibly beautiful. it's sad that there's obviously going to be death, but i've also heard that it's done with so much genuine respect and love and compassion for gay couples in korea.
unfortunately--and i end with this show on this rec list for this very reason, gay couples are still very much discriminated against in south korea. the discrimination is brutal. same-sex couples aren't allowed to register as a family unit, which interferes with matters regarding medical insurance and adoption, should any of these couples want children. and of course, there's everyday discrimination in the workplace, in school, etc. while i think people have slowly been getting better about queerness in korea, they're still incredibly conservative with queerness. so to have a story that so lovingly depicts a queer relationship means a lot--and i hope that in the future, there'll be more explicitly queer love stories. of course, i think there's a lot of power in queer-coding, esp. within the limited confines of mainstream korean television, but you know, times are changing, and i hope that shows like move to heaven and others will continue to push the envelope in queer representation in korea and beyond.

Mycroft: Keeping With Tradition, Tea, and 1972
This is part of a series of meta about Mycroft, tradition, and his possibly being a mirror for Mofftiss (until he sees Sherlock and John as a couple, Mofftiss won’t acknowledge it).
The Greek Interpreter
“Is he your junior?”
“Seven years my senior.”
“How comes it that he is ?”
“Oh, he is very well known in his own circle.”
“Where, then?”
“Well, in the Diogenes Club, for example.”
I had never heard of the institution, and my face must have proclaimed as much, for Sherlock Holmes pulled out his watch.
“The Diogenes Club is the queerest club in London, and Mycroft one of the queerest men. He’s always there from quarter to five to twenty to eight. It’s six now, so if you care for a stroll this beautiful evening I shall be very happy to introduce you to two curiosities.”
Five minutes later we were in the street, walking towards Regent’s Circus.
“You wonder,” said my companion, “why it is that Mycroft does not use his powers for detective work. He is incapable of it.”
“But I thought you said—”
“I said that he was my superior in observation and deduction. If the art of the detective began and ended in reasoning from an arm-chair, my brother would be the greatest criminal agent that ever lived. But he has no ambition and no energy. He will not even go out of his way to verify his own solutions, and would rather be considered wrong than take the trouble to prove himself right. Again and again I have taken a problem to him, and have received an explanation which has afterwards proved to be the correct one. And yet he was absolutely incapable of working out the practical points which must be gone into before a case could be laid before a judge or jury.”
“It is not his profession, then?”
“By no means. What is to me a means of livelihood is to him the merest hobby of a dilettante. He has an extraordinary faculty for figures, and audits the books in some of the government departments. Mycroft lodges in Pall Mall, and he walks round the corner into Whitehall every morning and back every evening. From year’s end to year’s end he takes no other exercise, and is seen nowhere else, except only in the Diogenes Club, which is just opposite his rooms.”
“I cannot recall the name.”
“Very likely not. There are many men in London, you know, who, some from shyness, some from misanthropy, have no wish for the company of their fellows. Yet they are not averse to comfortable chairs and the latest periodicals.”
Pressure Point in the Diogenes Club - Dare Not Speak (Its Name)
Tumblr media
No One To Host? Hi, I’m John, and I need someone to be aware I am here to help.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(I’m sorry, but this just makes me think of John looking at Sherlock and saying, “Give me some sugar, baby.”)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tea trolly, and it’s clearly exaggerated about the numbers using the one trolly, but tea is of course important in the series.
1972 - Gay News was a fortnightly newspaper in the United Kingdom founded in June 1972 in a collaboration between former members of the Gay Liberation Front and members of the Campaign for Homosexual Equality (CHE). At the newspaper's height, circulation was 18,000 to 19,000 copies.
Sex between men had been partially decriminalised for males over the age of 21 in England and Wales with the passage of the Sexual Offences Act 1967. After the Stonewall Riots in New York in 1969, the Gay Liberation Front spread from the United States to London in 1970. Gay News was the response to a nationwide demand by lesbians and gay men for news of the burgeoning liberation movement.
In 1976 Mary Whitehouse brought a private prosecution of blasphemy (Whitehouse v Lemon) against both the newspaper and its editor, Denis Lemon, over the publication of James Kirkup's poem The Love that Dares to Speak its Name in the issue dated 3 June 1976. Lemon was found guilty when the case came to court in July 1977 and sentenced to a suspended nine-month prison sentence and personally fined ₤1,000. When all totalled up, fines and court costs awarded against Lemon and Gay News amounted to nearly ₤10,000.[3] After a campaign and several appeals the suspended prison sentence was dropped, but the conviction remained in force. The case drew enormous media coverage at the time. In 2002 BBC Radio 4 broadcast a play about the trial.
( x )
Insert copious references to The Importance of Being Earnest, and Mycroft as Lady Bracknell, the traditional figure of the play. Also, Richard Brook was supposedly cast as Algy (it’s spelled wrong), according to his CV. [Side note, in the film version, Algy was played by Rupert Everett, who also played Holmes in Case of the Silk Stocking--that entailed twins being the villains. At the end, Watson marries an American psychoanalyst, goes on his honeymoon, and Holmes is left alone.]
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, in TAB, Sherlock is messing with tradition. Wilder (TPLoSH director)/let’s get Wilde-r in S4, potato meaning love for another white male, and private clubs were sometimes used in the Victorian era for secret weddings.
Tumblr media
Tradition will get you this, instead.

was tagged by @whosthathufflepuff so here we go
1. How tall are you? 5′4″. i am the short.
2. What colour and style is your hair? dark brown, and currently rocking the pidgeotte hairstyle (long on top, shaved on side and back). i used to dye some of it green, but that gets expensive.
3. What colour are your eyes? green with yellow inner-ring, although they are prone to change colors a lot.
4. Do you wear glasses? most of the time. i am nearsighted, so i take them off a lot if on the computer, reading, or working on crafting projects
5. Do you have braces? no, but i do have a pretty big gap in my front teeth. that’s how i whistle.
6. What is your fashion sense? very different depending on if i’m at work or personal time. at work, it’s business casual with khaki pants, button-up blouse and sweater vests. at home my style varies a lot between masculine: baggy jeans and t-shirt and/or hoodie or flannel shirt; feminine: dresses and nail polish and tight pants showing off my great ass; to miscellaneous/androgynous: tunics galore, large belts, boots, unicorn headband. it depends on my mood and how my gender feels that day.
7. Do you have any siblings? two older sisters. they are twins. fraternal, not identical. but we all look like clones of our mom, so we might as well be identical triplets when we were little. we look a bit more different now. i am the youngest and the queerest.
8. What kind of student are you? the kind who had severe mental health problems, and was only sometimes given disability accommodations. so basically i had a lot of potential (according to others), tried my best, but still slipped through the cracks. i got my Bachelors in Arts for Anthropology by the skin of my teeth.
9. What are your favourite subjects? anything that required critical thinking skills; i SHINED. loved biology, literature, languages, and of course anthropology. the gems that i really loved were a genetic biology class, a sex biology class, a human skeleton class, and another physical anthropology class. all of them were fantastic at proving that biology, sex, and gender are all a muddled spectrum on which humans enforce a binary limitation. also i got to handle real bones a lot.
10. What are your favourite TV shows? uh........ Star Trek Deep Space Nine? as far as tv shows i’m willing to watch over and over and over and over being the measurement for “favorite”
11. Favourite Books? pfffftttttt too many to list. i have an affinity for sci fi and fantasy. but gonna say the top hitters are A Door into Ocean by Joan Slonczewski; and Species Imperative series by Julie E. Czerneda. 12. Favourite pastime? craft projects, and reading fanfiction. right now i’ve been doing a lot of sewing. i also do a lot of woodburning. i also just finished One Punch Man anime and am looking for good fanfiction in it. i do a lot of fanfic plotting, (especially ways to subvert dominant narratives) but don’t write very much.
13. Any regrets? that i ever moved back to Indiana, instead of staying in Connecticut, or at least the East Coast. this place is a fuckin hell hole. my family is the opposite of supportive. and i’m employed by bigots who think they’re progressive.
14. What is your dream job? dream dream job? i want to be the Nonbinary-Autistic Margaret Mead. (slightly) more realistically? i want to be paid a living wage to sew grocery bags for low-income homes (and teaching sewing skills/home ec skills as well). like i am kinda in awe of these nonprofit bakeries and other small businesses that employ people who are “undesirable” by society (low income, homeless, disabled, ex-convicts, etc) and teach them skills that help them become more “valued” by society. i’d love to be able to make my own such place that focused on sewing and other home ec stuff. alternatively, an even more far-out dream, i’d like to bake medicinal cannabis chocolates for autistic/ADHD/PTSD people.
15. Do you want to get married? eeeehhhhh..... kinda? i mean i’m not averse to the idea. but i have a feeling i’m more likely to do it out of economic desperation than out of love. it’s a pretty flawed system, and the only reason to “marry” over just living with someone is for the economic benefits. ideally, i’d want to be a part of a polyamory/clan. about a dozen people, but i’d settle for five adults, as long as there was only one or two kids being raised.
16. Do you want to have kids and how many? i mean definitely i don’t want to produce biological children. but i am not averse to nurturing children in a parental manner.
17. How many countries have you visited? none. i am very bitter about this. but i am poor and disabled. so there ya go. i tried studying abroad in college, but they wouldn’t let me due to my grandfather dying (and apparently they were worried i’d kill myself while overseas).
i’m tagging @madamekoosdisco @down-sizing @not-so-superheroine @becausedragonage @tauntedoctopuses @kelasparmak @autismserenity @winblossomwin @twisting-vine-x @dawnavis

I meant to do real things this evening, but instead I spent 3 hours making a Tegan and Sara primer. Soooo enjoy if you want
Okay so Analise010 asked for a Tegan and Sara primer, but I didn't find any I liked, so I had to make my own. And then well...it became a lot. SORRY FOR THE EXCESSIVE LENGTH.  But also I'm lazy and didn't include photos, that was a step too much effort.
The Basics Tegan and Sara are a band. It feels weird to call them a band when it's just the two of them (plus whoever's in their backing band at the time), but wikipedia calls them an "indie pop singing duo" and that's worse, so let's go with 'a band'. They are both lesbians. No, they're not dating. They're identical twins. Their faces are incredibly similar so I don't know why I even have to say that, but a surprising number of people think they're dating, so. For a while it was very easy to tell them apart, but then Tegan took out her labret piercing, and their hair for the Love You to Death tour is more similar than it's been in years. But I think Tegan cut her hair sometime in the past few weeks, so hopefully it's simpler again. Sara has a narrower face than Tegan. You can also use their tattoos to tell them apart, but honestly we'll be here all day if I continue at this level of detail.  When they're preforming, Tegan always stands on the left side of the stage and Sara on the right (from the perspective of the audience). Both of them write songs, sing, and play instruments. Generally, they don't create together. They each write their own songs and then work together to polish and edit them. Whichever sister wrote the song is the one who sings lead vocals on it. They have EIGHT albums. So many! And as far as anyone knows, they're planning on making even more music.  We're gonna do this shit chronologically. 1. Under Feet Like Ours (1999) Listen, maybe don't start here. There are some gems to be found, but they were babies (only 19 years old!), and it shows. Plus, about half the songs also appear on their second album, so you won't be missing a lot.  It was initially released with the band name "Sara and Tegan" until they decided it sounded better the other way, changed it, and haven't looked back since. My fav tracks Clever Meals This is Everything 2. This Business of Art (2000) Again, about half the tracks come from Under Feet Like Ours and it was only released a year later, so it feels a little young too. But by picking the best bits of their previous album and adding in new material, it definitely feels like a step up. My fav tracks My Number Not With You Hype 3. If It Was You (2002) This is where we start to get a little less folky.  More pop-y, more electronic, and definitely more upbeat. More love and breakup songs, less undirectional teenage angst. My fav tracks Living Room - This is a Tegan and Sara CLASSIC. If they play it at a show, it's usually in the encore, and the entire room ERUPTS when it starts. Underwater I Hear Noises Terrible Storm 4. So Jealous (2004) This is kind of the beginning of their mainstream success. A lot more critical attention and some radio play for their singles. The first time I ever heard of Tegan and Sara was between this album and the next.  I was in high school and fell for them hard, and honestly they've been my favorite band ever since. My fav tracks I Was Walking With a Ghost - The White Stripes covered it, which honestly probably contributed to T+S's popularity a lot, but I think that fucking cover is awful Where Does the Good Go Speak Slow Fix You Up
5. The Con (2007) This is it. This is the album. This is the one that cemented their success and brought in many of their lifelong fans. And it's the reason I'm even writing this fucking thing in the first place. Today they announced The Con X - a tenth anniversary tour where they'll be playing an acoustic arrangement of all songs in album order, and I've been excitedly swooning about it all day, which is why Analise asked for a primer.
My fav tracks The Con Hop a Plane + Soil, Soil - two tracks that appear in that order on the album and you have to listen to them in a row. The mood change is just everything and so perfect.  I'm probably in the minority for putting Soil, Soil on my favorites list though, so do what you want with that... Burn Your Life Down Nineteen - listen, this probably isn't the best track ever, but it's so satisfying to wail along with. Great stuff at live performances Back In Your Head Dark Come Soon
(I know it's a lot, but count yourself lucky that I didn't just list the whole album)
6. Sainthood (2009) Getting even more electronic here! This was probably their most experimental album I think. It's also the first time they co-wrote a song, "Paperback Head".  That's not one of my favorite songs, but I'm glad they tried out something new.
My fav tracks Hell Alligator - which I mostly just love because Sara says it was inspired by Rihanna, which makes no sense to me when you listen to the song The Ocean Sentimental Tune Someday - for this one, I'm just gonna leave you with a quote the Autostraddle review, which imprinted on me very early after I first listened to it and now it's all I can think about every time I hear the song:  "At first listen, this track may sound like an anthem a garage band might   be inclined to write, one of those “fuck you, world! we’re gonna be   famous one day!” tracks – but IT’S NOT, and that’s partly why it’s so   great. This isn’t about how the world has wronged Tegan. It makes me   think of a 17-year old Tegan getting over a first relationship and   putting on a false bravado to prove she’s going to become something,   like she’s trying to convince herself rather than anyone else."
7. Heartthrob (2013) This is where people started throwing around the word 'sellout'. Which, in general, as a concept can just fuck off entirely. Yes, I think they were trying to reach for more mainstream success, but why is that a bad thing? More success = more chances to hear them live and a better likelihood of getting even more music. Plus, there seems to be this idea that musicians at the start of their careers have the most artistic freedom and are the most 'real', and after that they're doing what the record label wants. But that doesn't make any goddamn sense. Do you think 19 year old Tegan and Sara had any clue how to navigate the music industry and ensure that their artistic vision got out there? No. They've said in multiple interviews that they're originally piano players who were basically forced into the indie folk acoustic guitar thing. This album brings those keyboards to the forefront and they don't have to pick up guitars at all if they don't want to.  Plus, no matter the change in sound, the lyrics are pure Tegan and Sara. That's never going to change.
My fav tracks Closer - the music video is an amazing giant queer sleepover party and everyone should watch it I'm Not Your Hero Drove Me Wild How Come You Don't Want Me I Couldn't Be Your Friend
8. Love You To Death (2016) It's just over a year old and they're currently touring in support of it.  This is the album where (in addition to their songs about romantic relationships) they have some distance from some of the rough patches they've had as sisters over the years and can finally write music about that. White Knuckles and 100x are both songs inspired by those times. Plus, they made a video for every single song on the album.
My fav tracks Boyfriend - their queerest song to date, don't let the name fool you U-turn - oh god I love this song but the music video is terrible. Okay so it's not a terrible video in and of itself, but I don't like it at all for this particular song Dying to Know Stop Desire Hang on to the Night
Misc
Yay! You made it to the end of my babbling about each album, so do you know what that means? MORE BABBLING ABOUT OTHER THINGS. I'll try to keep it short though (mostly because I'm lazy and want to eat dinner soon)
- When they recorded The Con, they also filmed the entire thing and turned that into a movie with a 'chapter' (about 10 mins each) for each track. It is DELIGHTFUL and a great entry point for getting a feel for their personalities and learning more about them beyond just liking the music. A wonderful person has collected the chapters here and here
- Banter! A super important part of Appreciating Tegan and Sara is their concert banter. They talk more during shows than any other band I know of and a lot of it is fucking hysterical. It also feels like their way of setting boundaries, you know? They share so much and talk about things from their past very freely, which stops people from poking into their current personal lives more than they might otherwise.  Maybe at some point I will make a curated list of my favorites, but see above re: lazy etc. For now, just search youtube for Tegan and Sara best banters. You'll find plenty.
- Live screw-ups. There is always one song that Tegan can not remember the words to or play all the way through. As soon as she figures it out, it'll happen to another song (Admittedly, this is happening less lately as they play more festivals  and want to look good in front of randos who don't know much about them). Which leads to plenty of fabulous footage of Tegan fucking up a song and swearing. Sara also fucks up occasionally, but less often. Sometimes they power through, sometimes they restart, and sometimes they have the audience sing it.  And I can't explain why it's so adorable and precious but it just IS. Again, not gonna link to vids, but the song "Northshore" has some of the best because it's so fast.
And now I'm done typing for real this time :)
