what did you think about the kendall/roman hug? Was it kendall completing the logan transformation and physically abusing roman or was it roman self-inflicting pain onto himself?
porque no los dos? no but literally where's that post about how it's them tearing open the father wound... like i fully thought ken was pulling him in for a hug and the realisation that he was actually pressing roman's wound to his shoulder had me watching like 😟😯
the hug, to me, is the answer to roman's "why isn't it me?" it's kendall saying: because i can do this to you. because you want me to do this to you. like !!! it's kendall hurting roman and roman saying so but still asking for more. still clinging to it. he makes no active effort to pull away. in fact, he actively grinds his head in harder. roman wants the pain and kendall wants to hurt him but it's an act of comfort, too. a sicko scene for the ages. 10/10

so haunted by eduardo’s relationship with his father and the way it’s presented in the film. like he’s literally only mentioned three times across all 164 pages of the script but what we see of the achievement-oriented nature of their dynamic sets up and narratively justifies the pattern of people-pleasing behaviour that eduardo spends the entire duration of the film attempting to break out of. and when eduardo does manage to finally break that pattern by freezing the account, by asserting a boundary to stop mark from continuing to financially take advantage of him, he’s punished for this perceived transgression so harshly that it destroys not only his relationship with mark but also his relationship with his father, cementing that the behaviours he exhibits in his relationship with Mark in regards to acts of service are founded in and perpetuated by the way that his father treats him. if you’re raised with an angry man in your house there will always be an angry man in your house

Understanding in 1x02 vs 4x03:
*deep breath*
Early on, this is what Shiv sees:
Tumblr media
This is what she doesn’t see:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kendall is cornered into talking about the business. Wordlessly, gently threatened into it when he said he didn’t want to right now. Gerri and Karl aren't in mourning. They are doing their jobs, and they’re testing him to see if he can do his. If he said no and walked away, the company would be taken out of family control, Logan would be furious, and he'd lose out on his dream forever.
Shiv sees none of that happen, and Kendall doesn't even tell her about it- maybe because he thinks she wouldn't listen, maybe because she said she thinks he’s weak already, or maybe because he just almost never defends himself in general. But she can’t see his perspective without knowing what happened.
The lack of understanding between them results in this disaster:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
She thinks he’s being cold by talking to the nominating committee, but we see how he really feels. He just always turns to reason and order in times of crisis and she doesn’t really know that.
He has not forgotten this conversation or Shiv’s perception of him here. He doesn’t want that:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Shiv’s been inside Waystar now. She knows now that talking business for a minute during a dark time doesn’t mean you don’t care. In fact, she did it while Kendall was confessing his worst moment, but it didn’t mean she loves him less. She knows him better now and has seen that he’s anything but emotionless. No one criticizes him for turning to reason and order this time. They ask for it.
No matter what happens, he won’t forget this nice conversation either. He won’t forget that his siblings finally see him the way he’s always hoped they would: as the big brother who can make hard decisions in seemingly impossible moments. He’s the one who can shepherd them through it. There’s trust there now and they finally know how it feels. The door will be open for togetherness now, even if it looks like it might close for a while. It’s not that they changed as people, it’s that they’ve learned how to read each other.
Not seeing each other’s perspectives led to having to be alone:
Tumblr media
Now, it seems, even though they will struggle for a while, they have an understanding.

no of fence to jon snow fans who for some reason care about his exact age, but these discussions just annoy me no end. not only bc there's no way any weirwood flashbacks bran has to rhaegar/lyanna will come with time/datestamps, but also bc there's always comments like this:
Tumblr media
SEVERAL turns of the moon (ie, months)?! have these people never seen a human baby before or just have no concept of their ages? even if we take into account travel time from the toj to wf, meaning jon was not a newborn too fresh out the oven when catelyn and robb arrived, there's still a difference between a newborn and a 3mo and an even bigger difference between those infants and an older baby 5-7mo. there's very good reasons these lines were cut. whatever birthdates can be worked out internally for jon and robb from when they're first mentioned as 15 and 16 don't matter in the end, bc grrm doesn't care about a consistent timeline and the actual text of catelyn's pov and ned's convo with robert about cheating on her should outweigh any guesstimates about jon's official nameday wrt robb's. catelyn may not have cared for jon, but she would sure as hell have noticed his nameday if it came before robb's and made him ned's firstborn. if jon's birthday canonically came before robb's then either ned's cover story would not involve adultery (not impossible for him to sire a bastard before his wedding), or he'd just give jon a new nameday along with his new name to fit the adultery lie. it makes no sense for him to lie about one and not the other, undermining the big lie with a little public clue of his story not adding up. whatever else she was as a stepmother, cat wasn't stupid and a bastard who was actually the eldest son being raised alongside her trueborn heir could be an even bigger insult than whether he was born of adultery or not.
BUT, the unknowability of jon's true birthday is not the only reason this annoys me, it's bc this is all based on the assumption that jon must be older since rhaegar/lyanna ran off together before ned married cat, as if both boys must have been conceived asap as robb canonically was when his parents consummated their marriage. and that's not how human reproduction works! even if you don't understand how fast babies grow in the first year, you should know that people who get pregnant do so through ovulation cycles and a lucky sperm finding an egg and all that, not just immediately getting knocked up as soon as one has p-in-v sex for the first time. not unless you only know mean girls sex ed where if you have sex you will get pregnant and die. (even tho lyanna did die, there's plenty of canon examples where pregnancy did not lead straight to death. also examples of people who did not get pregnant right away and even some who are/were sexually active and childless without always having moon tea on hand.) we can't know how long lyanna was having sex before that sperm+egg match happened or even how long she was with rhaegar before losing her technical virginity. if they were married, doesn't it make sense to think they didn't consummate their relationship until the wedding night either? that's the only leverage there is to ensure a status as wife rather than just mistress.
and while i just said grrm doesn't care about exact timelines and a lot is still foggy surrounding the rebellion and esp rhaegar, there is one timemarker wrt robert's rebellion he voluntarily threw in, time and time again: that stannis was besieged at storm's end for almost a whole year. that siege, which mind you, did not match the duration of the entire war. it only started after robert won his battles at gulltown and summerhall, returned to storm's end, and then went out and lost the battle of ashford, leaving his homeland open to the reachermen. the same siege which only ended when ned made a detour there after the sack of king's landing, before going to the toj. even if lyanna may not have given birth that exact day ned found her, she could only be waiting in that bloody bed for weeks at the most, not months. so if rhaegar knocked her up the very same night he carried her off and jon was still a newborn when ned found her after the siege of storm's end had ended, wouldn't that mean lyanna was pregnant for well over a year? that's not how human pregnancy works either! so, maybe that's proof that jon and robb, whichever order they were actually born in, were actually very close in age as babies, much closer than if they were both conceived asap.
and really, jon's actual birthdate does not matter imho, when he was raised not just as the bastard to robb's trueborn heir, but with robb also known by catelyn and the world as ned's firstborn (which he was, in any case, as jon was ned's nephew by birth). what difference could a birthdate before robb's make (even were there some means of discovery) after ned, cat, and robb are all dead? if one is looking only at his birth parents then he's only a firstborn child on lyanna's side, but definitely a second son on rhaegar's side. maybe he was always meant to be a second son with a not much older half-brother! even if the aegon fka young griff is not in fact rhaegar's son, he'll still be known as aegon vi targaryen, meaning jon will never be known as any father's elder son. if i may reference mean girls again, it's not going to happen.

succession captured the mundane, bizarre, chaotic, inexplicable details of death so perfectly. the denial of roman refusing to admit logan was dead until they stopped giving CPR, the immediacy of the team moving forward with logistics before the kids had even processed it, shiv blurting out non sequiturs, roman stressing over if he said the right words and wanting to see him, all of them grasping for control through making the statement.
the writers were SO genius for having his happen on episode 3 of the season, only a quarter way into the episode, after they’d already established the episode plotlines. it was sudden, unpredictable, and it blew everything else (the mattsson deal, connor’s wedding drama, roman firing gerri) to ashes. that’s how death is. it has no logic, no narrative symmetry. and by not showing anything until tom made the call, the viewers are put in the sibling’s shoes. we’re as shocked as they are.

saw a comment on twitter talking about like how connor looks at stewy in prague when stewy looks back at kendall in the elevator and now all I can think about is little twelve year old kendall just terrified and sobbing and begging connor not to tell their dad after he saw his baby brother give his best friend like the meekest kiss possible

succession (2018-2023), s4.10, "with open eyes" // s1.06 "which side are you on?"
"I like and respect every one of you, but, uh, no one's gonna have their mind changed in here. Right? So I suggest we move on to the vote." "Fine. Okay. Vote."

as a trans person i really do relate to kendall roy (almost certainly unintentionally) from a trans/queer perspective.
his life long struggle to perform and live up to a role that was imposed on him from an early age. the inability to shake the confines of expectations that slowly suffocate and break him. the trauma that comes with an utter lack of inner agency and autonomy. the desperation for self actualization but the inability to achieve it when he’s constantly just fighting to keep his head above water. the alienation of existing in a society/culture that is utterly incompatible with and hostile to his deepest most honest self.
regardless of whether or not kendall as a character can be read as trans/understood through that lens, i do find it moving how relatable he is in this respect simply on a personal level.

i also think it's really funny when people say they hate roman specifically for electing a fascist because....you know, last time i checked the *CO*- ceos of waystar royco were ultimately responsible for that final call. it's like hating roman for enjoying wine at the devil's sacrament, but not kendall because he, what? didn't like the satanic wine as much as roman? he still drank it, still attended the sacrament and was the designated driver for everyone including satan themself. meanwhile shiv just sat in the back refusing a drink but not to leaving or taking a stand either. yes, roman bears a little more responsibility than the other 2, but, babes, they ALL had to agree and ultimately did agree to elect a fascist to serve their interests. that was the whole point.
