Pairing: Fionn Whitehead x Reader

Request: “Could you please write something based on any of Fionn and Joe songs? Like the story behind Don’t Go or For You, maybe?”

Warnings: Angst, some fluff.

[Part One]

The room grows silent, as his slightly chapped lips press against yours, his eyes closed as if scared of your reaction. After what seems like an eternity, you’re finally kissing him back, and the room picks up again. Spinning as you place your hands over the sides of his face to pull him closer. Spinning when you let out a muffled moan against his lips with the release of all of the unspoken tension. Spinning when you quickly pull away from him, and he has to catch his breath again.

And now, you’re shaking your head, and so suddenly this night is reminding him of that one.

“No, I can’t—We can’t.”

Fionn’s breath is labored as he tries to come up with the right words to address the impending argument.

“I know—Sorry, I don’t know what I was thinking—I ended things, I shouldn’t have-”

“You can’t do this to me. This can’t keep happening. Why did you kiss me when you made the decision about us years ago, Fionn?”

You’re quick to stand up, and all Fionn wants to do is grab you and never let go. But he understands your anger. He understands that look in your eye that he couldn’t quite place before.

“Because I think I’m still in love with you.”

You scoff at his words, your eyes getting red and puffy as more tears fall silently onto your cheeks. He attempts to make eye contact with you, but it’s almost as if you can’t bring yourself to look at him, and he can’t blame you as his heart beats painfully within his chest.

“You think? That’s not fair, Fionn.”

“No, god, I know that I’m still in love with you.”

“No, you know what—I can’t listen to this. I can’t bear it. I can’t stand the thought of knowing that you still love me in the same way that I love you. You’re making it impossible to move on, even years later, Fionn.”

“I—”

“I know, I get it. You wanted me to be happy and you figured that the relationship was only prohibiting that due to the demands of your career and I respect your decision. It took me a while but I truly do…But that doesn’t mean that I can just forget your words and move on—that doesn’t mean that we can just start over—it still hurts, Fionn, and I don’t want to complicate things any further.”

“I’m sorry, I shouldn’t be here…this should’ve never happened. I really shouldn’t intrude on your life, that’s not...that’s not my place anymore.” He’s shaking, with his hands stuffed into his jacket pockets and his eyes turned forcibly away from yours, as his vision becomes blurry and the room continues to spin.

And just like that, the silence has returned. And he can’t stand it when he knows that you’re standing right there with tears running down your face.

Eventually, he hears you sigh, before he feels your hand being placed onto his arm—a comforting touch.

“Fionn, I don’t want to lose you again…”

Your voice is constricted by the small sobs that fall from your lips,

“Can’t we just be friends? Go back—way back—to the way things used to be? That way, even though we’re almost always miles apart, it’ll seem like things haven’t changed—like we can just pick up where we left off—in those few moments when we can enjoy each other’s company, without all the hurt.”

I don’t see their faces

They walk right past by me

But it’s just empty spaces

A friend’s telling me to stop dreamin’

But I just can’t shake off this feelin’

The walk to the cafe seems to go on for ages before Fionn finally arrives at the scuffed doors of the place, just a few minutes before he’s expected, and that makes him increasingly more nervous than before.

After his last encounter with you—after that fated kiss—Fionn, against the pressure of a past heartbreak, agreed to attempt to reconcile your friendship with him.

Although, now, as he sits on a wooden stool at the counter, coffee in hand and heart racing at the mere thought of seeing your face again for the first time in eight months, he doesn’t think he will survive the hour.

Strangers walk by the glass window beside the counter, but his eyes don’t register anything except masses of grey and blue. In fact, his entire surroundings start to slowly bleed together, as his mind grows fuzzy in preparation to see you walk towards the cafe—towards him.

If Fionn was being honest with himself, he didn’t think he could bear to talk to you without wanting to kiss you again. You were always a looming thought in his mind. And ever since that night and your agreement, it had become difficult for him to focus on anything else. Food suddenly had no taste. Music was suddenly just noise. And so, for the last few weeks, Fionn decided that it would be best to just dive into his work—to assume the role of another—in order to cope with his profound feelings.

But you knock me out of my trance

With you

Feelings that suddenly come rushing back into him as he spots your figure walking towards the cafe and the color returns to his eyes and the world around him reanimates itself.

He fumbles to stand up from his chair, as you walk closer towards the counter, and suddenly you’re hugging him tightly, and he’s kissing your hair.

It takes a few moments for you to pull away from him, much to his delight, and the friendly smile returns to your face as you finally speak to him,

“It’s been so long.”

He nods in agreement, a smile growing on his face as he takes a seat, your words softly repeating in the back of his head as if pleading him to do something.

With you

Once you order your preferred coffee drink, you sit down in the seat next to him with your knees almost touching by their close proximity.

“So, not trying to be pushy but what can you tell me about your latest project, movie star?”

Fionn’s face visibly cringes at the sudden nickname and it sends you into fits of laughter,

“Honestly, all I can say is that it’s coming out sometime towards the end of next year…”

“Aww that’s it…” You whine jokingly, raising your eyebrows suggestively as if doing so would convince him to share his secrets with you.

“Hey, I signed a contract. You’re just gonna have to wait til the trailer comes out along with the rest of the world” He laughs at you when you cross your arms and sigh dramatically.

“What about you…Anything interesting happening in your life right now?”

“Well, work is…work. I just got back from New York on Friday after sitting through hours of business meetings over winning the rights from some author for the new film adaptation of some bestseller…”

You trail off and shake your head, taking a sip from your cup before placing it back onto the wooden counter,

“It’s been exhausting but I guess it’s worth it…”

He nods his head with a soft sigh, raising his cup up to you comically, and you quickly follow his suggestion, clinking the cups together as if to preach the truth behind your words.

By the time that Fionn finally notices the empty state of your cups, the rain has really started to pick up outside, beating ruthlessly against the brick exterior of the building insomuch that it disrupts the sultry jazz tune that plays on the speakers scattered across the room.

“It was very odd to see you on screen, just casually chopping away at your fictional dad’s body…The whole time I just felt really bad about torturing your character, but in the end it was kind of amusing.” You chuckle, and Fionn shakes his head at you,

“Yeah, the layout of that entire scene was so morbid but honestly I had fallen—we all had fallen—so deeply into the hole of the project that I didn’t really think very much of it…I was drained.”

Fionn can’t help but admire the way that your eyes look under the dim lighting of the room as the rain continues to fall outside and a rumble of thunder echoes from the distance.

“Honestly, I almost cried when I got to the ending where Stefan travels back in time to be with his mom and ends up dying in his therapist’s office. That was one of the good endings but it was still so hard to sit through” You sigh contently, and start fidgeting with your hands as you lean against the tabletop.

Suddenly a phone rings, interrupting the peaceful silence that had settled between the two of you, and Fionn becomes suddenly aware of just how quick you are to grab your phone from the purse dangling from your chair.

A smile appears across your cheeks as the screen lights up, projecting a dull blue hue across your features. A smile that makes him wonder whether or not it appears on your face whenever you see that he’s texted you.

“Damn, I’ve gotta go…I’m sorry to cut this short but I have somewhere to be in an hour and I really need to change out of these clothes.”

You glance up at Fionn with apologetic eyes and a warm smile.

“Ooh why…do you have a fancy date or something?” Fionn teases, without really thinking about the meaning of his words.

“Actually…yeah…” You trail off and his face seems to visibly drop as you fiddle anxiously with you fingers again and continue,

“It’s just a small dinner and movie thingy with this guy that deals with our legal defense team at work…”

Fionn wants to smile, he truly does, but for some reason, it’s as if his body has frozen in place, and he can only stare back into your eyes,

You seem to fidget under his gaze, shaking your head as you look at him,

“I’m sorry if I’ve made you uncomfortable…that was really bad timing…I hope this doesn’t screw up the opportunity to see you again.”

Your words send his heart racing, and the color returns to his cheeks as he clears his throat in an attempt to clear the emotion lingering in the back of it,

“No. Sorry, it’s just—I’m sorry if I gave you that impression…It may not seem like it but I’m really happy for you, (Y/N)…Truly. I’m happy that you’re happy. I’ll always support you.”

He manages a smile the best he can—one that even crinkles the edges of skin around his eyes—and that seems to convince you because your lips curl into a smile that matches his.

“Thanks, Fionn…”

You throw your arms around him and hug him tightly—almost desperately—and he quickly succumbs to your embrace, nuzzling his nose into your hair. Although Fionn realizes that his time with you is coming to an end, he can’t bring himself to push down the numb feeling anymore. As you part from his arms, it begins to feel as if a part of himself goes with you, but you remain close enough to him that he can collect his thoughts.

“I’m happy that you’re in my life again” You admit, pulling up the strap of your purse onto your shoulder,

“And I hope that you’ve found happiness too”

Fionn’s heartbeat continues to speed up at your words, beating against his chest like the rain that drummed heavily against the rooftop of the stuffy room, and he finds himself able to fight off the impending sadness traveling through him.

He doesn’t want to let his feelings get in the way of your growing friendship. He doesn’t want to screw up it all up when it’s only just begun. He doesn’t want to—he can’t—stand to watch you walk out of his life again.

In all of the chaos of dealing with the perplexity of his own emotions, Fionn is only barely able to hear your utterance of goodbye before he finds himself waving in your direction, a routine smile plastered onto his face.

You give him one last wave before you turn around and walk out of the doors of the cafe and Fionn finds himself staring blankly at the spot where you once stood as the jazz music fades out from the speakers overhead and he suddenly has to blink tears away.

Introduction to Information and Communications Technologies (ICT)

     From what I had learned about this topic, it is because of Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) that we are experiencing a life with less hassle on gathering information and at the same time understanding it. It is also known that with ICT life is made better and the day to day chores are a lot more easier to accomplish that before, and nowadays, the rise of technology is so rampant that it became so special that we human beings started to rely on it and we became very dependent on it. Here in the Philippines, ICT is very welcomed and acknowledged not only by the government and business industries but also by the Filipinos, given that almost every Filipino today has cellular phones, gadgets, and appliances. In addition I have also learned that with ICT you cannot only gather information but also disseminate them to other, for we have so many sites to do so, one type of site is a blogging site that where we can upload our own opinion and knowledge to be seen or read by the so called “netizens”.

Rules of Netiquette

            Now I have fully understand that surfing on the internet does not mean you are free to do what ever is it that you wish to do on the internet. keep in mind that internet is know as the “superhighway” of information, therefore if ever there are people who wishes harm upon you may use the information you had given on the online society to threaten you or in the worst case scenario, harm you. Also as a person who uses technology, like computer or smartphone, me and you, might as well all of us should know about the risks we are taking just by being online, and also what the dangers known as “malware” can do to our computers and the like. this is where the safety precautionary measures play its part, as a “netizen” and a computer literate, we must be aware on how to stay safe while we are online and how to prevent these malwares to infiltrate and destroy our devices by following some rules and tips, but these some may mean a lot bigger when the time comes.

Basic Computer Understanding and Skills

         Knowing the basics about computer really means a lot, today technology like computer is widely used and being uneducated about computer means being left behind, not only by the trend but also by the benefits we can get by using the computer. Computers are not not only used in the offices anymore but also in homes, schools and even in businesses like internet cafe. Now I’am very thankful to learn even the basics of the computer parts, due to the reason that I am able to use computers with ease and making my task done a lot more easier. Computers are complex devices but if you learn how to use them, you can eradicate the complexity and use it in your own advantage and benefit. Computers have so many parts within a single unit and is divided into two kinds, the software and the hardware that both plays a big role in the computer as a whole, if ever one of their branches are missing then the computer might have a difficulty of functioning and performing certain tasks and might also end on not performing the task at all. that is how crucial a computer can be, as far as my knowledge go.

Microsoft Word

            There is only one thing that keeps bugging me the whole time I was thinking about Microsoft Word, and that one thing is definitely unacceptable for me. The thing that I was talking about is, what would happen if this Microsoft Word did not exist at all? Then my answer would be; making a document will be more difficult, its either you type write it, use the Word Pad, find another application or just write it down on paper, imagine the hassle that every individual should undergo if there is no Microsoft Word. But the good thing is, Microsoft Word exist, thus making writing documents a lot easier with its given services and features that is definitely complete in its own class, and with its endless number of pages, you can make a document of a lifetime with Microsoft Word. In addition, Microsoft Word also comes in a mobile version which makes it portable and accessible wherever you are as long as you have your phone or tablet with you.

Microsoft Excel

            Does solving large amount of numbers with a lot of coordinates and items bothers you? Well in my case, yes. But worry not, for what I have learned is that with Microsoft Excel, we don’t need to scratch our head every time we are dealing with number, because Microsoft Excel is a tool used for solving mathematics. By the word “mathematics” it means every mathematical problem can be solved using Microsoft Excel, and it is very convenient, you just have to know the right functions and commands then you can just type in the unit of number and press enter and “boom” you then have the answer in an instant that’s how convenient it is to use Microsoft Excel. Judging by its name, Microsoft Excel really is “Excellent!”.

Microsoft Powerpoint

            Now this thing here is the Microsoft Powerpoint, a tool that is used to create presentation. If you’re going to ask me what does Microsoft Powerpoint do, then I’m going to tell you, try it on your own, because what Microsoft Powerpoint does is so many that it even outnumbered all my fingers from hand to feet, and there’s no way of explaining them all in just one sitting. Therefore, experience is the best teacher. But let me tell you this short summary about what I understand about Powerpoint, Powerpoint is much more like an assistant during your presentation, it can play video, showcase slides, perform animation, screen recording and much much more. You can name every single thing regarding presentation and Microsoft Powerpoint has it all. I can confidently say that Microsoft Powerpoint is the best presentation creator, and even become the mother of all presentation, but that’s just an exaggeration.

            It is very fascinating to know that Online Environment is not just all about the User Interface and User Experience, but also for graphical designs. I have learned some of elements about graphical design on the online environment such as balance, emphasis, movement, pattern, repetition, rhythm, proportion, and variety. These elements are all important, for they play their own specific role and they please certain types of viewers. Though not all viewers like a single type or element, then that’s the time the other elements turn to shine. In fact, these elements are the ones used by the most popular websites of different fields and targeted users e.g. Google, Facebook, Youtube, Rappler, and many more. In addition, there is also the so called, infographics which is fun and interesting, just by knowing how you can deliver information in a graphical way. It might be in form of animation or by giving the viewers a test of logic by letting them find out the meaning within a graphic art.

            In this topic it is greatly appreciated that you are guided on making your own desired website, like using Facebook, a social media website that allows you share you share your wanted information, but still, with restrictions regarding web design, so if you like to be the boos of your website then WordPress Is the app suited for you. As what I’ve learned, WordPress is a tool that allows you to create your own blogging website, it is you who decide for everything, design, content, elements, dynamics, and anything with regards to a blogging site, name it and WordPress will have it. Now, with highly advance technologies, impossible is most likely becoming “I’m possible”, just like before the 20th Century, web developers and programmers are all professionals, spending how many years just to finish their course of choice, but now? Anyone as long as he or she is a computer literate, can create a website for him/herself by the use of Facebook, WordPress, Blogger, and the like. There is also a term called What You See Is What You Get (WYSIWYG) which means, though you are free to put in anything you like on your own website, you still need to be careful on your content, because your viewers can see everything and there is no such thing as “hidden files” or “privacy” on your website, and that makes you vulnerable to threats, identity theft, and anything that causes you harm.

            As what I’ve said during my reflection on the topic Imaging and Design on Online Environment, infographics are so cool that you can disseminate information through graphical arts. Now anyone can make infographics more easier and portable, anywhere you are, you can make infographics through Piktochart with dozens of notable features and functions, like making a collage, editing one or more images at once, and making Gifs, just how fun could that be? I have learned that if you use infographics on delivering information, you can easily get the attention of your viewers rather than reading ad explaining the information onto them, and also note that it is much more better if the audiences or students in other cases learns and adopts more accurate and quick when they have their attention onto the topic given to them. Also it would be kept in their “well of knowledge” once they’re the ones who dug up that knowledge for themselves.

            It is just new to my knowledge that ICT was widely used during the historical events in the Philippines. I learned that ICT does not only makes things or chores a lot more easier, but it is also able to alter the reality and change the flow of history, just like what happened in the EDSA (People Power Revolution). As the time is moving forward, so as the ICT advancement is moving forward, developing and evolving. At first Radio Broadcasting was used, after that, the text brigades, and then the use of social media sites to spread the advocacy and persuade the people to join a campaign or protest. Anonymous Asks Answered

Part 1

All answers under the Read More!  This is gonna be in 2 parts since I did get quite a few.  A few of these have been answered separately on their own.  If you missed them, just search the tag “asks” or “replies” on this blog and you should be able to find them.

I feel like my answer to this should be obvious lol.  As you’ve seen, I basically scanned the entire thing, so if you looked at all that and you’re still on the fence, I’d still say buy it because it’s really great quality and you’d be supporting the production!  I understand giving the postcards a pass since one of them is literally just a picture of a volleyball on the stage (I still bought it tho), but I think the guidebook is absolutely worth it.  

Ahhhhh always a really difficult question!!!  Ok in no particular order, my favorites include, Suga Kenta, Kimura Tatsunari, Akisawa Kentarou, Hashimoto Shouhei, Ino Hiroki, Kondou Shouri, Nagata Takato, Kawasumi Bishin, and Arisawa Shoutarou (I decided to stop at 10 lol).  

For future reference, this is literally one of the more specific asks and not vague at all!  But unfortunately, I really don’t know of any Judai/Sonde specific blogs.  I will say that it would be hard to run one for Sonde because he only has a blog, no twitter or instagram, and he updates it REALLY rarely.  I’m talking like once or twice a month?  So just based on that you’re more likely to find a Judai-specific blog.  I can try to update on him more but he is one of the actors that tends to not say that much when he updates, which is every day.  Just usual things like, went to rehearsals, came home, gonna sleep lots!  That’s like 85% of what he posts.  

I reeeeeally could not give you those specifics, EVEN IF I knew them, which I don’t.  I especially could not give an answer as to how theater staff are paid, but whenever possible, if you can financially support the productions, I will always encourage people to do so.  With DVD purchases especially.  And then after that, whatever they make, at least you’ll have contributed a little!  As to how popular it is compared to other 2.5D shows, there’s no denying it’s up there.  It gets a lot of press, and a few avenues of promotion that certain other plays don’t get because it stems from an already-existing, very-popular Jump series.  It’s still no Tenimyu, and I don’t think it out-performs Touken Ranbu, but it is very highly regarded and stands in the top tier.  But stage plays are still a niche market, and you can be in the top-level productions as a minor character and still not make very much.  

They all wear face masks all the time actually, especially as the weather gets colder.  Japanese people habitually wear face masks to avoid getting sick, prevent other people from catching what they might have, and also just to keep their faces warm because Tokyo is WINDY and cold as fuck in winter.  I used to wear one just to keep my face warm, and so did most of my friends.  

Well I’ve posted the two major parts of the rap battle in two posts already that I’ll link below, but I don’t know where you can download it.  I bought my own DVD to rip those clips from, and I highly encourage people that can buy their own DVD to do so.

I’ve mentioned before in several prior posts and have also shared dress rehearsal footage for Winners and Losers in which both Shouri and Takato cross-dress to play Aoba Johsai fangirls for the match between them and Karasuno.  Shouri is talking about his cross-dressing experience playing that fangirl.

I claw my face about this pretty much every week.  Basically, just use Tumblr on your internet browser on your phone and set it to Desktop mode because if you’re using the Tumblr app, it’s shit.  There is no way to get those links to work on mobile and that’s not your fault or mine, it’s that the Tumblr mobile app SUCKS BALLS.  

It really depends on the agency.  Obviously some of them are more restricting than others, but in general most talent agencies feature a wide variety of talents, including models and singers, not just actors.  Many of the actors belong to smaller subsidiary agencies of Watanabe Entertainment which is a huuuge agency featuring many many actors and singers and other types of entertainers.  Japanese talents tend to work a little differently; you pick a specialty for sure (acting, singing, dancing, etc...) but you’re generally expected to be able to do a little bit of everything.  ESPECIALLY stage actors.  In Hollywood, we have a bunch of actors and actresses who can’t carry a tune to save their lives, but in Japan, they try to use every person for as many different things as possible so even if your specialty is acting and not singing, you may be required to sing for a role at some point.  Every actor therefore does their best to expand their overall repertoire of available skills.

Across the board though, there is an overall restriction across 99.9% of agencies that forbids actors from talking about their personal lives and relationships.  Commonly known as the “love ban” it applies most strictly to idols and musicians, but also gets applied to actors and seiyuu.  For the most part, nobody is known to be dating until they’re about to get married.  And then maybe you’ll see a marriage announcement, or in some cases, you have to keep your marriage a secret.  I’ve seen stage actors announce upcoming marriages and now even some seiyuu, so it’s not impossible.  Overall, stage actors are allowed more freedoms than TV/movie actors and musicians/idols.  I feel like models have the most freedoms allowed based on what I’ve seen.  

MAN THAT DRAMA WAS HELLA BAAAAAAD but I love Peacemaker Kurogane~ Kenta’s been around though... he’s been acting since he was a child, I think his first role he was 4 years old?  He features in a wide variety of stuff from TV shows to movies and variety shows.  Since his role in Peacemaker, he’s done mostly movies, but he obviously made the transition to stage because he absolutely had to play Hinata no matter what.  ^_^  

I get this question about Allen a lot and I need to clarify that I don’t actually have a 100%, for-sure answer since I don’t have his birth certificate and I don’t know his parents, but I do not think he is half.  I have mentioned before that his name is spelled with Kanji ( 亜廉 ) and that Aren is an existing Japanese name that just happens to have a really nice English equivalent.  Allen did study English back in school, so he would know that better than most.  And I will say that he’s at least a quarter if not half Okinawan (he mentions an Okinawan grandmother in an older blog post).  So his features aren’t entirely main-island Japanese, and that may be where people are getting the impression that he’s half along with the romanization of his name, but I really do not think so.  To me, his features still look entirely Asian.  Justin we know is half Australian.  

Winners and Losers pretty much covers just the Interhigh match between Karasuno and Aoba Johsai.  They do cover the post-match meal and Hinata and Kageyama getting upset and promising to never apologize anymore, and they do go through the third-years deciding to stay on the team, but in 3 acts it covers mostly the match.  They do throw in a lot of flashbacks and they do include a flashback about the Karasuno third-years that in the manga occurs during the Shiratorizawa match (so that’s earlier than expected), but it’s still mostly just the match.

Daily Rewards and Events

Never forget to open up the daily rewards and check out the game events. You might not know what you’re going to get. You should always find it in the right area of the screen from your castles such as events, bonus rewards, and training.

Go For Resources First

You must be thinking of building your military into an unstoppable force, no? But it can’t be unstoppable unless they have the resources to be one! Food, wood, stone, and gold are all abundant in the early game but you must still upgrade your economic buildings in order to help you out on the late game. The biggest problem with a lot of RTS players is that they focus too much on their armies that they forget to provide them with the basic needs. This ends up having their military units ill-equipped and outnumbered versus the enemy. If you want a more constant growth for your army, consider upgrading farms, mines, and lumber mills all the time especially if you’re on early levels.

Mix Military Units

Each military unit always has strengths and weaknesses. For example, you need to have a good ratio between knights, archers, horsemen, and some artillery if you’re going for a more general raid. If you scout an enemy with a lot of light cavalries, bring more archers. If the enemy has squads of cavalries, consider bringing more spearmen, and so on and so forth. Lastly, always read each unit and what enemies they’re best against. It’s a simple yet effective tactical advantage.

Band Yarouze Review: It’s a battle of the bands!... and I love a fish man

Band Yarouze (バンドやろうぜ！) is a Japanese card collecting rhythm game made by Aniplex and Sony Music. The goal of the game is to collect cards through gachas and events by playing various songs performed by the four main bands: BLAST, OSIRIS, Fairy4pril, and Cure2tron. Unlike the other games, the player’s character isn’t really in the story; you are more like a bystander or “god-like” being who just observes and sometimes speaks to the members. Therefore, all you do is play the songs and unlock cards, events, characters, and band stories. 

I started playing Band Yarouze around March 2016 because the same friend who recommended Ensemble Stars wanted me to suffer more… I’m not even kidding. Even though I like rhythm games, I wasn’t too interested in playing this one at the time. A few characters caught my eye, but not enough to invest into the game. However right now, it is my second favourite game and brings me just as much suffering as Ensemble Stars does. 

Main gameplay: 5/5 ♥♥♥♥♥

The gameplay for Band Yarouze is extremely simple: tap, hold, hold-slide, and swipe (left and right) notes when they slide down towards the bottom of the screen. The notes follow the beat of the song, so it’s easy once you understand the flow. Rhythm games are very popular in Japan, but each of the mechanics are slightly different. I think out of the ones I have tried, Band Yarouze is the most forgiving. For example, some other rhythm games need hold and release notes at a specific time or they won’t count. This makes it difficult to play songs  with a full combo, especially if you’re on expert mode with a max note speed. However, in Band Yarouze, if you press a hold note a little longer than indicated, it won’t penalize you unless you miss the next note.

Another interesting point of the game is the event function. Almost all Japanese games have some type of event aspect. In typical games like Ensemble Stars, during the event time you play through and complete lives to gain points and rank up to collect event cards. But in Band Yarouze, you complete the song to gain points and objects (like keys, buns or chips) to either collect points, rank, or exchange items for event cards.

For example, during an event called, “Stand by Me GIGS: Nice Dream, Journey Mood,” (photo above) you try to collect points and rank up to get special cards and items such as stones and gacha tickets. You can also win steamed buns after clearing the event song and use them to play the time-limited event songs. However, in the current event, “Advent of the Quattro Virtuoso GIGS: Dante of the Purgatory,” (photo below) you go through the story challenges and play special lives. If you clear the Live, you win chips and exchange them for limited Super Rare (SR) and Rare (R) level cards. I find collecting points and ranking events easier and more fun than just exchanging items, even though it is easier and less stressful. I like that Band Yarouze changes the rules and mechanics for events because it keeps the game interesting. Even if you play the same song repeatedly, it is still challenging to collect or complete the event. I kind of wish other games would also change their event rules from time to time.

Unfortunately, Band Yarouze is only available via the Japanese app store and Google play store. As I mentioned in the Ensemble Stars post, you can download a separate Android Game Platform or create a Japanese iTunes account to access these games. There aren’t too many tutorials for Band Yarouze but gyrotalon from Reddit made a basic English guide to the game. This helped me understand the navigational system and how to BREAK and level up cards. You can also check out Banyaro English Tumblr and Banyaro English Twitter for translated event announcements, basic character information, and replies to questions from other Band Yarouze players.  

As always, it is free to play and has in-game currency called “medals.” I didn’t use to care about the gacha in this game before since it is kind of expensive (it costs 500 medals for a ten card pull). However, one of my favourite characters got a pretty card and it all went downhill from there. So far, I’ve spent a bit more than $350 on Band Yarouze, which I’m not even surprised. Honestly, since the past few events have been featuring my favourite band or characters, I’m surprised the number isn’t much higher. I spent a lot a few weeks ago, trying to get a SR of Shin. He came home after four or five 10-character rolls… but at least he came home… unlike a certain someone [Cough Koga Cough].

Overall, Band Yarouze is really fun and addictive. Even if you aren’t good at playing music games, you can still have fun trying to beat your score. You also probably don’t need to buy medals unless you want a certain card, but the game gives you many rewards along the way. I’d recommend this game to any beginners who don’t have much experience playing rhythm games. The songs are well composed, the characters are quite unique, and the game is easy to play.

Characters: 4/5 ♥♥♥♥♡

When I started playing Band Yarouze, there weren’t any characters that immediately caught my eye. My friend pointed out some characters that were my type and sadly, I completely agreed and my obsession began. Each band includes one vocalist, guitarist, bassist, and drummer. They each also all play a different type of rock music adapted with modern Japanese elements: BLAST is classic/aggressive rock, OSIRIS is emotional/punk rock, Fairly4pril is alternative/indie rock, and Cure2tron is electronic/pop rock. I have members I like within each band but OSIRIS is by far my absolute favourite.

Their music and appearances are cool and edgy but their lyrics and sound are still so expressive. I love all their songs! My top three are “Darkness,” “Voice,” and “Heavenly Breeze.” Although there is only one vocalist, I love each member’s voice for its unique sound and way of speaking.

(My favourite Kyo cards. He is a beautiful angel with a beautiful voice who should never feel alone.)

Takara Kyo (Kobayashi Masanori) has a quiet but strong voice. His shy personality easily shows through his looks and attitude. But when he performs, it is breathtaking. Especially in “Heavenly Breeze,” Kobayashi’s vocal range and consistent control create a passionate and memorable performance. I’m sure I have cried listening to him sing; it was just so beautiful. Kyo struggles with his thoughts and problems internally but can relieve his stress through his singing. I can’t wait to hear more songs from him that are absolutely ethereal. 

(My favourite Ray cards. He is a silly and stubborn dork who should always dream big.)

Ray Cephart (Hanae Natsuki) has a confident and silvery voice. His voice reflects his energetic and playful side, as well as his serious and bossy side. Ray’s overall tone is quite high but leaves a ringing that isn’t necessarily bad. Although, within OSIRIS, I like his voice the least I still find him very charming and sweet. He may act like an idiot sometimes but it’s because he is a big dreamer who wants OSIRIS to become the best band in the world.

(My favourite Makoto cards. He is a strict realist who should continue to follow what he believes is right.)

Kurusu Makoto (Uchida Yuuma) uses a lower and quiet stern voice compared to Kyo and Ray. As an active medical student, his personality is always serious and blunt which easily reflects in his voice. He has this mix of sexual attractiveness and mysteriousness in the way his sentences flow. It’s hard to describe but I’d want to hear his voice if was a tutor explaining math I don’t understand. Even though he can be cold and harsh, he still dedicates himself to practice bass and help the other members of OSIRIS realistically achieve their goals.

(My favourite Shin cards. He is a mature, fish-loving old man who should always smile and help others.)

Finally, Koganei Shin (Umehara Yuuchirou) has a low and husky voice. I’m simply in love with everything about him. His voice is so calming and reassuring, it makes me smile easily. I really wish he had a singing part since he voices Hasumi Keito from Ensemble Stars and other popular idol characters from different games. He has a beautiful singing voice! Let my drummer boy sing! [Internally weeping]. 

As the leader of OSIRIS, Shin’s reliable personality easily reflects in his voice but so does his silliness and extreme love for fish, especially Hachibiki Sashimi (he works at his parent’s fish shop). Though I hope he always helps cheer people up, either with his music or simply his personality. I must say out of all my favourite characters from the mobile games I’ve reviewed so far, realistically, Shin is the closest to my idea type. He is handsome, cool, friendly, reliable, strong, smart, and responsible; what’s not to like? I know he’s only a 2D character and will never really exist, but if he did, I think I would just cry forever.

Story: 3/5 ♥♥♥♡♡

The main story in Band Yarouze is about the characters’ struggles and difficulties about debuting as a band. There are sometimes choices during a character’s story, but whatever you choose does not really change the outcome. There is no additional gain if you answer “correctly” except to see the characters’ different reactions. Event stories are usually really weird. Sometimes they have impossible storylines like the band members turn into eggs on Easter, or they get transported to the Underworld on Halloween. It could never happen, even in the game’s universe, but it kind of happens anyway and fans still love it. Sadly, there are very few English translations of the story. Even Banyaro English Tumblr doesn’t have full translations of every chapter, only the prologues and some event chapters. I think the game is either not popular enough to have full translations or the game doesn’t have a large international fandom: both are likely. I’ll wait for the day someone translates them all so I can enjoy my silly boys being silly.

Overall: 4/5 ♥♥♥♥♡

Band Yarouze is an amazingly fun, simple and addicting game for anyone to begin playing. The songs are catchy, the artwork is beautiful, the characters are unique, and the story is wild. I don’t completely regret spending money on this game. But I think would be little kinder to my wallet if OSIRIS and Shin were not involved. I would recommend this game to beginners who like great quality music and art. This would be your best option to learn how rhythm games work differently than puzzle, RPG, or other card collecting games. It can teach you to appreciate music and help you diversify in the types of games and music you may play or listen to. I think it will also make you feel like a music genius even if you’re musically challenged like me!

i’ve been writing for 11 years. it’s weird to think about it in terms of time now because i used to talk about it in high school, joking i’d have been writing for a whole decade soon. but nonetheless, it’s true. i started writing when i was very young because state standardized testing is terribly boring, takes too little time, and i needed to fill in the huge empty gaps of waiting with something. i’m still not entirely sure what drove me to write in the first place, but that’s what i did. and i’ve almost always been exclusively fascinated by stories about lgbt people and lgbt relationships even before i knew i was lgbt.

i like shitty movies and hate good movies. that’s only half a joke. there are plenty of movies that are considered “good” that i like, but when i actually tried watching a lot of classic movies that people have raved about, i ended up not liking a lot of them or just being terribly bored. it’s not even just a matter of not appreciating the themes present, but more that the films just don’t hold my interest for very long. in contrast, i can binge watch shitty horror films until i pass out in the middle of them. creature feature weekends on syfy used to be my favorite parts of the month for a reason.

i have a fear of ghosts and demons. i’m not entirely sure what caused it or why it’s become such a part of my life, maybe it’s just too many possession/demonic horror films at the wrong point in my life. maybe it’s just that i was raised religious and though i’m not religious anymore, i still can’t shake the fact that i believe these things do exist and can be malevolent. maybe it’s too much reading too late at night. i don’t really know why, to be honest. it’s ironic, because i’ll purposefully seek out movies and books that feature ghosts and demons. the grudge came out in 2004, and to this day i still have a paranoid and irrational fear of stairs late at night and can’t shake the creepy feeling that something is in the dark. might sound crazy, but it’s true.

i suffer from mental illness and personality disorders. and they all most likely result from the abuse i suffered at the hands of my mother for most of my life. i have very high key anxiety, which makes it difficult for me to initiate conversations with people and make decisions that are risky in nature. it also makes walking my dog at night very difficult. there is also depression mixed in there, which makes me very tired and decreases my motivation significantly. i have bpd and avpd, as well. bpd makes it very difficult for me to manage my emotions, as everything feels very intense or very numb, and contributes significantly to my self-loathing as there’s a constant stream of uncertainty in my head. avpd makes it very difficult to talk to outside sources about my issues, which makes therapy at the moment an absolute impossibility. i’m finding my own ways to cope as i can, and i think it’s starting to work.

tadanobu asano is my favorite actor. and he has been since i watched ichi the killer when i was in sixth grade. that was a very pivotal point in my life for several reasons, and he’s very important to me. believe me when i say that silence might have been a shitty movie, but i really enjoyed everything he did in it. i’ve been steadily tracking down and watching his films ever since. he’s the real reason that i started watching j-horror in the first place, which is pretty much what led me to the place i’m at right now and led me to the fandoms that would become the most important to me and the most important in my life. there’s a LOT i would like to thank him for, tbh. he means a lot to me.

i love animals, and they love me. and i’m not exaggerating when i say that. i’ve encountered animals and been told that they’re dangerous, but they liked me just fine. i’ve had stray animals grow warmer towards me and allow me to pick them up and hold them. my grandmother had kittens in the barn next to her house and i was the one who made it possible for my cousins to touch them since they trusted humans by trusting me first. i’ve had people’s dogs who usually bite approach me and let me pet them. and i really love animals. i don’t kill bugs if i don’t have to, i used to play with the daddy long leg spiders that showed up in my veterinary science room in high school, and i raised praying mantises as a kid and kept a pet frog for just over a year.

i have a natural talent for academic writing. when i was in my last two years of high school, my grades absolutely tanked and a large part of that had to do with returning to an abusive environment and being so isolated from everyone that i had no way to cope. my grades suffered heavily, except for my grades in english. my senior year, i was taking a college freshman level class through a university and i was able to get great grades in it even when i often scrambled to complete assignments or worried i didn’t understand the material. i had a teacher comment he never understood how much english meant to me until he saw a test score of mine that was incredibly high when most people hadn’t scored that high. had i kept my shit together and gone to college, i probably would have studied it. i might still some day if i ever get my shit together enough to consider attempting anything academic.

i have a sleep disorder. it’s largely caused by working the night shift and developed the longer i worked there. while left to my own devices, i usually develop a nocturnal sleep schedule and spent an entire summer sleeping during the day and staying up all night several times. that didn’t really translate well to working for some reason. as time passed, it became more and more difficult to sleep during the day to the point where i now have to take sleep medication to ensure i sleep for more than three to four hours before i go to work. during my days off, my sleep schedule almost always tries to revert to me staying up during the day and sleeping at night, and it’s an active issue trying to resolve it. i’m strongly considering changing what hours i work as a result.

i’m agnostic. i was raised in a nondenominational christian church and ended up not going back once i entered public school. when i lived with my grandmother, i encountered several denominations, which were apostolic, baptist, and pentecostal. needless to say, i’m very apathetic at best to religion. that doesn’t stop me from watching movies that include religion or make me automatically dislike media with religious themes. i’ve also retained a lot of information about christianity from my time in the church and my own studies which makes me very critical toward people misusing the faith. i don’t mind people who are religious! i just merely ask that you don’t approach me about the topic unless you’ve asked first.

i’m gay and trans. it’s in my about and my description and if you somehow missed both of those, i talk about it a fair lot. my identity is very important to me. i knew for the vast majority of my life that i was not straight or cis, but i didn’t have the terms i needed to really describe how i felt and wasn’t really able to admit it to myself until recently. however, that’s who i am. being lgbt is very important to me and is a very important part of my life.

The bus/flower scene was inspired by the same thing happening in real life to a friend of Mark Gatiss called, aptly enough, Edmund Moriarty: “His daughter was very young and he’d been up all night with her and he got on the tube to White City and this very beautiful girl started smiling at him and he thought ‘Still got it!’ and he got all the way there and got to work, looked in the mirror and he had a flower in his hair and that’s what she’d been looking at” Gatiss told the audience at a December screening of the episode.

After taking a fine-toothed comb to new Sherlock episode The Six Thatchers (well, watching it with one finger hovering over the pause button) here are a few items of note discovered, in addition to a handful of discoveries made by some very fine Sherlock detectives elsewhere…1. We know that Lady Smallwood’s British Intelligence code name is ‘Love’, leaving the Holmes brothers and Sir Edwin to divvy up ‘Antarctica’, ‘Langdale’ and ‘Porlock’ between them. Porlock (as well as being a village in Somerset whence came S.T. Coleridge’s famed interrupting ‘person from Porlock’) was the alias of an agent working for Moriarty in Conan Doyle novel The Valley Of Fear. Langdale Pike was a character in The Adventure Of The Three Gables. But Antarctica? Perhaps that’s a fittingly chilly name for “never been very good with [humans]” Mycroft?2. It looks as though the opening credits have been updated for series four. They now feature a post-swimming-pool-fight Sherlock, Watson standing in what looks like a well and a lump of something odd in one of Sherlock’s posh Ali Miller teacups.

3. It’s hardly hidden, but there seemed to be plenty of focus on 221B’s skull décor in the episode, which was all about the impossibility of outrunning death. Symbolism! Additionally, the black fish mobile in Rosie’s nursery could either be foreshadowing the location of her mother’s death, or, you know, just some fish.

4. This is what John was typing in his “221Back” blog entry:

And we’re back! Sorry I haven’t updated the blog for such a long time but things really have been very busy. You’ll have seen on the news about how Sherlock recovered the Mona Lisa. He described it as “an utterly dreary affair” and was much more interested in the the case of a missing horseshoe and how it was connected to a bright blue deckchair on Brighton beach.

I’ll try to write everything up when I get a chance but it’s not been missing portraits and horseshoes that have taken up my time.

I’m going to be a dad.

I mean, I thought I’d spent the last few years being a Dad to Sherlock, but it really doesn’t compare. The baby runs all of our lives. Maybe not THAT different to [….] I’ve fought in two wars, my best friend once faked his own death but none of that [….] terrifying and amazing and the biggest adventure I’ve been on.”

6. In Sir Arthur Conan Doyle story A Scandal In Bohemia, Sherlock Holmes tells John Watson “You see, but you do not observe.” In The Six Thatchers, he makes the same complaint to baby Rosie Watson.

7. The number 626 bus, which John takes to work, is a real bus line running from Finchley to Potter’s Bar.

8. The advert on the side of John’s bus is for ‘Strawb Fizz’, sweets with ‘explosive flavour’. That’s not a real product as far as know, so must have been custom-made, but why? Could there be an explosion in Sherlock’s future? Or some strawberries...

9. As John gets off the bus with the flower behind his ear, a passenger can be spotted carrying a newspaper with a headline ending “…be in two places at once?” a possible reference to the case of The Duplicate Man that flashed up earlier on screen asking: “How could Derek Parkinson be in two places at the same time? And murdered in one of them?”. It’s never twins, remember.

11. The big hint for episode two, The Lying Detective, is spotted behind John’s texting partner ‘E’ at the bus stop. It’s a poster featuring Toby Jones in character as Culverton Smith, advertising either a new film, TV series or book featuring the character titled something containing the words ‘business’ and ‘murder’.  The words ‘coming soon’ and ‘he’s back’ are also clearly visible… (Watson also walks past a poster for The Book Of Mormon, but not sure that's strictly relevant here.)

12. ‘E’, the woman John meets on the bus, appears in the credits as Elizabeth and is played by Sian Brooke, who played Ophelia to Benedict Cumberbatch’s much-publicised Hamlet at the Barbican in 2015. Look away now if you don’t want a potential spoiler revealed: Brooke was also spotted filming scenes for episode two The Lying Detective, and is referred to by setlockers as “The Lady In Red”.

13. A tenuous one this, but here goes: when John is texting ‘E’ late and asks if she’s a night owl, she replies “vampire”. The Adventure Of The Sussex Vampire is a Sir Arthur Conan Doyle story about a dysfunctional family and a jealous, abusive brother attempting to do away with his younger sibling. Could her jokey answer be a clue to Elizabeth’s back story?

14. There may be a long list of things Sherlock Holmes doesn’t know about (former prime ministers?), but William Shakespeare isn’t on it (Conan Doyle’s “the game is afoot” catchphrase comes from Henry V, incidentally). In The Six Thatchers, Sherlock quotes “by the pricking of my thumbs” from Macbeth. Unless of course, he’s quoting from that other classic British detective writer, Agatha Christie…

15. The Power Ranger strapped to the front of Charlie Welsborough’s Ford was the Blue Ranger. Not sure if that’s relevant, but just being thorough.

16. The continued references to the Black Pearl of the Borgias are a connection to The Adventure Of The Six Napoleons. Said pearl was the treasure hidden inside one of six plaster busts of Napoleon in the original story.

17. Writer Mark Gatiss didn’t only borrow the premise of The Adventure Of The Six Napoleons from Conan Doyle for this modern update but also some names. Thatcher bust distributors Gelder and Co. were also the distributors of the Napoleon busts in the original story. Barnicot, Harker and Sandeford, bust owners, are also repeated between the two.

18. Toby the bloodhound proved a difficult co-star, as Steven Moffat told the Q&A audience in December: “It didn’t move! That was an immobile dog! You know that scene where they’re talking about the dog that won’t move, me and Mark [Gatiss] wrote that on the street to account for the fact the dog wouldn’t move. It just sat there like an ornament!”

19. Toby lives with Craig the hacker. In Craig’s room is a street sign for Pinchin Lane, which is where the original Toby the dog lived (with a Mr Sherman) according to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in The Sign Of Four. Source: Vanity Fair

20. This isn’t the first time Ajay actor Sacha Dhawan has appeared in a Mark Gatiss-written script. He played Waris Hussein in 2013 Doctor Who docudrama An Adventure In Space And Time and then the lead in that year’s The Tractate Middoth.

21. According to this website, there’s a real-life hotel in Tbilisi, Georgia called The Sherlock. Now you know.

22. Mary-in-disguise’s fellow plane passenger was played by James Holmes. No relation.

23. A close-up of one of Mary’s fake IDs reveals one of her aliases to be Gabrielle Ashdown. ‘Gabrielle’ was the fake name used by spy Ilse von Hoffmanstal in 1970 Billy Wilder film The Private Life Of Sherlock Holmes, and ‘Ashdown’ was the alias she used when pretending to be married to Holmes, then later alone in Japan. 27. Throughout the harrowing London Aquarium scenes, filmed in a single day, the team kept themselves amused by inventing facts about sharks, as relevant to their location. “Sharks like beans”, “sharks cannot spell” and so on…

28. Unlike that popular myth, sharks do sleep. In fact, the ones at London Aquarium have to be in bed by 2am, which made filming there difficult and is perhaps why it looks very much as though some scenes are set against a video screen of fish swimming rather than the real thing. “One of the things we did find hard was the aquarium,” said producer Sue Vertue, “which we tried for ages to work out if we could film everything in the aquarium and then we realised that sharks sleep at night. So we had to find another way around doing that.”

29. Mark Gatiss said at the Q&A in December that they had always planned for Mary to die sacrificing herself: “It was always going to be saving Sherlock.”

30. 31. When Mycroft arrives home and sees the “13th” note on his fridge, it’s hidden underneath a menu for a Reigate Square takeaway restaurant. The Adventure Of The Reigate Squire is an 1893 Sherlock Holmes story by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

32. Prompted by the note on his fridge, Mycroft makes a phone call and asks to be put through to “Sherrinford”. First introduced by Holmes scholar William S. Baring-Gould, Sherrinford is a hypothetical older brother to Mycroft and Sherlock. “I’m not given to outbursts of brotherly compassion. You know what happened to the other one” hinted Mycroft in His Last Vow. At this year's SDCC, Mark Gatiss, Amanda Abbington and Benedict Cumberbatch were photographed holding up signs saying "Thatcher", "Smith" and "Sherrinford". So we can expect to have the Sherrinford mystery solved by The Final Problem?

33. The therapist Sherlock sees at the end of the episode is Ella Thompson (played by Tanya Moodie), who formerly appeared as John’s therapist in A Study In Pink and The Reichenbach Fall. Who better to tell him what to do about John than the doctor who treated him for PTSD and grief?

K-pop and fancy sneakers: Kim Jong Un’s cultural revolution

PYONGYANG, Korea, Democratic People’s Republic Of — Dancers in hot pants. Factories pumping out Air Jordan lookalikes. TV dramas that are actually fun to watch.

North Korean pop culture, long dismissed by critics as a kitschy throwback to the dark days of Stalinism, is getting a major upgrade under leader Kim Jong Un.

The changes are being seen in everything from television dramas and animation programs to the variety and packaging of consumer goods, which have improved significantly under Kim. Whether it’s a defensive attempt to keep up with South Korea or an indication that Kim is willing to embrace aspects of Western consumer culture that his predecessors might have viewed as suspiciously bourgeois isn’t clear.

“The most important thing for us is to produce a product that suits the people’s tastes,” Kim Kyong Hui of the Ryuwon Shoe Factory told The Associated Press recently in the facility’s showroom, which is filled with dozens of kinds of shoes for running, volleyball, soccer — even table tennis. “The respected leader Kim Jong Un has instructed us to closely study shoes from all over the world and learn from their example,” she added, pointing to a pair of flame-red high-top basketball shoes.

To be sure, North Korea remains one of the most insular countries in the world. Change comes cautiously and anyone who openly criticizes the government or leadership or is seen as a threat can expect severe repercussions. But there appears to be more of a willingness under Kim to experiment around some of the edges.

The most visible upgrades are on television and its normal menu of propaganda programs and documentaries in praise of the leaders.

Viewers of the main state-run TV network — the only channel that can be seen anywhere in the country — are now stopping their routines to watch the latest episodes of “The Wild Ginseng Gatherers of the Imjin War,” a historical drama set in the late 16th century, when Korea was struggling against a Japanese invasion.

The anti-Japan, nationalistic theme is nothing new. A similar theme was used for Kim Jong Un’s first big contribution to the television lineup, an animated series reviving a popular comic from his father’s era called “The Boy General” that made its debut in 2015. The animation, set in the Koguryo period when Korea was fighting off Chinese incursions, was such a hit that people would stop whatever they were doing to watch it. A Boy General game was created for mobile phones. New episodes are believed to be forthcoming.

What the TV drama, first aired last July, and the Boy General animation share that’s new is their high production values.

The acting in the movie is grittier and more compelling, the plots more engaging and the sets and costumes are decidedly more elaborate than previous projects. Even the dialogue spoken in Japanese by the villains, played of course by North Korean actors, is generally accurate, though delivered with a heavy North Korean accent. The Boy General, meanwhile, makes skilful use of computer effects and is visually on par with some of the best animation in the world.

The improvements reflect awareness within Kim’s regime that the North Korean public is increasingly familiar with foreign pop culture despite severe restrictions that make it impossible for most to travel abroad or freely experience foreign movies, music or books.

That familiarity is particularly true of the North Korean elite, who are accustomed to seeing brand name products from Dior to Sony on the shelves of upscale stores in Pyongyang, the capital. Cheap knockoffs from China are common in marketplaces around the country.

Watching South Korean movies or listening to South Korean music is illegal. But a lot makes its way over the border and, even for those who would never dream of taking that risk, the officially approved cultural fare isn’t entirely void of foreign treats.

Bollywood films are popular in state-run cinemas — 2009’s “Three Idiots” with Aamir Khan, for example, was recently shown in a cinema just across the street from Kim Il Sung Square. North Korea’s educational channel regularly features long clips from foreign documentaries, and dog-eared Harry Potter books are among the most popular items at the People’s Grand Study House, North Korea’s biggest library.

North Korea’s “approach to the influx of foreign media has been to ‘modernize’ media production to provide an attractive and competitive product that caters to younger generations for whom older productions are no longer attractive,” said Geoffrey See, the founder of the Choson Exchange, a Singapore-based non-profit that supports change in North Korea through exposure to knowledge and information in business, entrepreneurship and law.

“For consumer goods, it also ties into a state policy to encourage more domestic production and import substitution,” he said.

Kim’s first attempt to update the pop culture scene started almost as soon as he assumed power in late 2011 with the creation of the Moranbong Band, an ensemble of female vocalists and musicians who are the “soft face” of his regime.

Although the members all belong to the Korean People’s Army, they are known for performing in miniskirts and wearing their hair fashionably short. They have released dozens of songs, all of which get lots of exposure through concert tours, DVDs and airtime on television.

They are beginning to look a bit passe, however.

In February last year, North Korea sent some of its top musicians, including a female quintet that performed in black shorts and red tops, south of the Demilitarized Zone to perform during South Korea’s Pyeongchang Winter Olympics. Two months later, Kim was in the audience as the South Korean girl group Red Velvet put on what is believed to be the first real K-pop show ever held in Pyongyang. The North Korean act that performed in South Korea was so well received that Kim sent them to Beijing last month for another goodwill tour.

Still, military orchestras and classically trained vocalists who perform in traditional “Choson-ot” gowns remain the mainstay of the Pyongyang musical scene. The girl band’s performance in Beijing was backed up by the state’s military chorus and orchestra, all in full uniform.

More importantly, there has been no effort to delink the arts from politics.

When the musical group returned to Pyongyang, Kim urged them to continue to “conduct original artistic activities pulsating with the party’s ideology” and act “courageously as mouthpieces of the party,” according to state media.

A Guide To Usable Portfolio Websites For Digital Designers & Creatives

Crafting an awesome portfolio website is no easy task. But it’s a necessity for creatives who want to share their work, land jobs, and get their name out in Google.

If you’re not sure how to design a great portfolio then this guide will help. Even if you already know how to create websites from scratch, this post should still have valuable suggestions and practical advice that you can follow and apply to improve your site’s experience.

Usability is absolutely crucial to any great website. That’s why you need to think about the user first and start designing from there. These tips will set you on the right track no matter what kind of work you do.

Organizing Work Clearly

When you design a portfolio gallery you want to showcase your best work. But you also want to show off your work in an easy-to-browse manner.

This means adding features like tags to sort your work, or labels to help visitors skim your work and find what they want. Let’s say a designer specializes in mobile apps, landing pages, and corporate sites.

That person should arrange their portfolio with labels so visitors can sort by one of those areas.

If a potential client just wants to hire you for landing page work then they probably don’t need to see your mobile design work. Yet portfolio organization goes beyond just tags & labels.

Have a look at the portfolio site of Merijn Hos. This uses a strong grid layout to help draw the eye to each piece as you scroll through the page.

I always recommend grid-style designs because they help to frame visual work so nicely. And they work especially well with responsive techniques if you’re designing for mobile too(which you should be). Now how about creative writers or coders. How do they show off work that has no visuals? A few suggestions:

Make small thumbnails for each project

Link to samples of the work/screenshots of code

Just list the project title/subject, then describe the work

It can be harder to sell your services without a visual medium. But that doesn’t mean it’s impossible. I think the best option for a writer/coder is to use the project’s logo, or some photo representing the project. That way you can still have thumbnails that grab attention.

Graphic designer Heather Shaw has a really nice site with a brilliant example of labeled portfolio work. As you scroll through each piece in the grid you’ll find a project name along with a small label of the work done. That helps visitors tell at a glance what you can do for them and what sort of work you’ve done for others in the past.

Launch On A Trusted Platform

This is probably an ovestated piece of advice but it’s overstated for a reason. How you launch your portfolio plays a huge role in the final output of your site. Many people like to run with free services like Tumblr. And generally that’s okay. But really, if you do professional work you want to launch a professional site. I can’t think of any better platform to run than WordPress.

With WordPress you can find a bunch of free themes and plugins to customize your site. Not to mention WordPress is totally free and managed by a massive team. All you’d need to figure out is the technical side like the domain, hosting, and initial setup.

A web designer or web developer would have no trouble doing that. But a photographer or digital artist may struggle. Thankfully there are free setup guides to help non-techie artists launching their WordPress portfolio for the first time. And truthfully that’s the hardest part: just getting online.

Once you get a website up you can usually let it run on its own. Maybe log into the admin panel to update every so often. If you’re dead set against managing your own WordPress setup(or paying for hosting) then you can try other free options. Most website builders you’ll read about actually cost money.

And that’s okay if you want to spend money, but many creatives just want to get their portfolio online & hosted securely. In that case try Portfoliobox. It’s an awesome tool that’s totally free for all users forever to host their portfolio items.

Naturally they do have a “pro” option if you want to upgrade for more themes and custom features. But that’s not necessary if you want to run it all through the Portfoliobox system. I haven’t found much else out there with so many great features like Portfoliobox offers (again, free for life).

It’s certainly not the perfect choice for every scenario and it comes with a learning curve. But that learning curve should be easier than WordPress if you’re not familiar with any website management tools. Ultimately you can’t go wrong with either one. Just try to stick with a trusted platform and veer away from the more experimental CMS’.

Brand Yourself

When you’re first launching your site it’s important to add a pinch of branding into the mix. This isn’t easy and very few creatives think about a personal branding strategy. But at some point you’ll really need to consider how you want to brand your site. It can be through imagery, through type, through colors or artwork or anything similar. You just want a design that says “this is me and this is my site”.

Take a look at the portfolio of Hardy Klahold. It’s a pretty clean site with a fullpage hero header that immediately grabs your attention.

But that photo isn’t of Hardy. It’s an example of Hardy’s work. You’ll notice the main branding is the typography on the page. And that’s perfectly fine! People will recognize that type and think to themselves “oh, it’s a personal site”.

That’s one of the best things you can do with branding: clarify your site’s purpose. The homepage of Tobias van Schneider does this as well, but using a fullscreen photo of himself.

Tobias has a large portfolio of work and many people already know his name. But for anyone new to his site they’ll get to see what he looks like and get a clear indicator that this is definitely his personal portfolio.

I really like this with more creative jobs like artists, musicians, and writers, because people don’t always see their faces. Clients love to know what you look like and it’s a great way to digitally “introduce yourself” to potential clients before a phone call or meeting.

Grant Burke takes a different approach with his header featuring a bunch of extra content. He uses a bunch of icons to show off the different services he offers through his portfolio. Plus the main header includes a small writeup about himself which is a nice personal way to connect your name to the digital world.

Not to mention he also includes full contact details at the very top of the page. That is a solid technique to land clients fast which makes a nice segue into the next section.

Offer Clear Contact Details

If a person wants to hire you then make sure they know how. You can show off the best quality work in the world and have the most usable site in existence. But none of that matters if people can’t send you a simple email or reach out with ease. Take a look at the Oana Foto contact page which loads dynamically from the menu.

This uses animated effects to transitions between different page sections. It’s actually a really neat effect and I don’t see it too often. But the contact form itself should be the main focus. From that page you should know exactly how to send an email. It also includes listed phone numbers and the email address itself if you don’t want to go through the somewhat lengthy contact form.

For a simpler example check out the contact section for Jordy Alblas. This uses darker inputs along with only 3 fields. That’s much less intimidating for new visitors who want to send a quick message. To the left you’ll notice Jordy’s Skype, LinkedIn page, and the full email address. There is no direct phone number like the Oana Foto page above, but adding a phone number to your page is a debatable topic anyways. Now if you want to go even simpler try this page on for size.

If you click the “contact” link it’ll scroll you all the way down to the bottom email section. And there you’ll find… just an email address. Nothing more. May seem a little basic but this works wonders. Not everyone needs a full contact form on their website. However I do recommend protecting your address to hide it from scrapers. Nothing worse than getting a bunch of spam messages.

Look Into Single Page Design

I’m a big fan of single page design for its simplicity and usability. It’s hard for a user to get confused if they only have one page to look at. So if you can design around a single page layout I highly recommend it. That doesn’t mean it’s the absolute best choice for every portfolio. But I do think it’s a good choice for creatives who prefer minimalism over detailed & complex websites.

The portfolio of Rogie King is one nice example. As you scroll down through the page you find a ton of works organized into sections. But there is no navigation because there’s no need for one. This is the beauty of a single page design: everything gets organized together and feels cohesive by default.

Take a look at Matt Regan’s page to see another fine example. This page uses a sticky navigation that follows you along. It also has an auto-scroll feature where you can click the links in the nav to jump to that particular section. It’s one example of single page design done right. And I have to say this is probably one of the better layouts you could study to design a clean & usable portfolio on your own.

Place A Focus On The Work

This advice really can’t be repeated enough. Make sure your homepage clearly shows exactly what kind of work you do and the type of jobs you’re looking for. While it is true that “people hire people”, you want to show off your work and yourself whenever possible. This should be evident right from your homepage and I always encourage creatives to add a simple gallery into the homepage, ideally above the fold.

Have a look at the main site for Amy Deputy. Her portfolio work filters through a slideshow with huge arrows and supersized photo samples. Those are really easy to skim through and the entire portfolio is incredibly user-friendly. Based on the corner logo you can also tell what she does at a glance. That’s the kind of clarity you should be going for. You’ll find a very similar design style on the portfolio of Justin M Maller.

Dark backgrounds grab attention and place focus right on the colorful work samples. Visitors can quickly skim through the grid-style portfolio and see if Justin’s work can be useful on any future projects. And this is just one example of how you could design your portfolio homepage. The actual specifics don’t matter so long as the page is clear, easy to use, and demonstrates exactly what you can offer.
