Things that happen at home:

So, my mom had her first symphony concert this weekend, and I’m happy to report that it was a smashing success.

What I personally thought was really cool is that the whole symphony is mostly older women. Most of the brass section was older men though, and you could tell that the trumpet and trombone players were having a great time with the music (lots of jamming out head and shoulders movement) and WOW that tuba player has A Set Of Lungs.

Honestly kinda makes me miss the days when Middle Sister would stand just outside my bedroom door and just BLAST through her practice session as fast as possible. Yes, she was a tuba player. Yes, she was in marching band and orchestra. Yes, I absolutely ran out screaming “MOOOOOOMMMMMM!!!!!” Every. Single. Time. No, that did not stop her in anyway whatsoever.

Anyway, there was also a cello soloist that performed with violin and viola accompaniment, and he was legitimately fantastic. I told my mom during intermission that she was better and she did her scrunch up face of You’re Full Of Shit But I Like The Support which was cute.

I was sitting next to my one of my cousins for the concert and we both kept side eyeing each other and giggling about how he was bobbing along and jamming out…for those of you that don’t know, it’s very easy to jam out and look cool when you have either a very small instrument or a very large instrument.

When you have a medium instrument, like a cello or French horn, you just look silly if you’re jamming out (saxophone is the exception) and my mom has this very…contained way of playing that looks intense but graceful and determined. So to see someone looking like they’re jamming out on an electric guitar while playing a cello was just…hilarious to us, because we’ve been watching my mom jam out for decades and never seen anyone look so goofy while sounding so good.

One of my moms work friends showed up, and she was an absolute delight. Complete sweetheart; it’s also really fucking funny to tease government contractors about their top secret clearances and joke about their projects or basically anything that they aren’t allowed to talk about. (I teased her specifically about being in the CIA because she does intelligence analysis; my husband and I have a long standing “argument” about if my mom works on quantum computers or making targeted ai satellite systems talk to each other, because honestly her PhD could easily allow for both) the goal is to make relatively small jokes and then drop it quickly because you don’t actually want them to violate their security protocols…but fucking hell if it isn’t fun to toe the line.

My mechanic husband had the dubious joy of teaching me how to jump start a car in the parking lot without jumper cables. (My car battery is in the fritz and needs replacement but we honestly thought it could wait another month or so…)

But basically you put the car in neutral, push it into a position that it can roll naturally downhill, then put it in either first gear or reverse (which ever way is down hill, basically) and release the clutch. I’m pretty sure this only works on automatic transmission vehicles, but I could be wrong and didn’t ask for clarification.

I’d like to point out that we were in a crowded parking lot with a perfectly functioning set of jumper cables. We could have absolutely asked any of the ten people walking by if we could get a jump. We could have waited for my cousin to come out, because we were parked right next to each other. But no. “What if you’re stuck by yourself? You pride yourself on being able to get out of anything.”

That man knows me too well.

Overall, great night. Fantastic concert, great learning experience, got to be an absolute little shit. 10/10, would do again.

i wanted to do a short hair jersey moment for a while. hair i feel like is very symbolic/can be analysed in rm, specifically with stan.

basically, you can kind of tell what era were in, his current mental state, and honestly, what point of rm where are in by stan's hair color.

ie. that white/silvery danny phantom color was pre!rm when scotty was still around/calm b4 the storm, blonde stan is post-scotty fallout when the toner washed out, electric blue hair stan is first style breakup sort of manic/mostly depressed stan, blue washing out/color oops, stan having just the tips of his hair blonde is healing stan w/ the dark brown coming in, red hair stan is crazy boy manic divorce stan and pink hair stan w/ the red washing out is cute boy, happy anti-valentines day ravesey reunion stan, with pink tip hair stan being very close to healing/college stan, and dark brown stan being healing/sober, thriving ( hw is hard, but he's okay ) ravenstan.

as far as kyle goes, i think long hair kyle is Default Kyle...short hair kyle is definetly...an Anomaly, a glitch in the matrix...a very, veeery bad sign, tbh. long hair kyle being jersey just sets him apart from my pep kyle and canon kyle tbh, i like his dark academia, maneater, philosophic ice king energy. and i was gonna say that maybe kyle stopped cutting his hair after stan passed away but...nah. nevermind.

but, *ahem*, towards the end of rm ( i'm so sorry, guys, i'm evil ), i had plans to...FATALLY WOUND JERSEY ;) saving stan in south park, there's some violence and drama and action towards the end that involves a lot of the other characters in southpark we left behind/side characters we don't know about yet...and i kind of wanted to do something Dramatic ala tangled saving rapunzel by cutting her hair off, like, idk some very dramatic and upsetting, heroic reason that jersey's hair gets cut short....

so i'm thinking...he gets also mortally wounded in some violent and horrifyingly sad and frightening way, maybe a shard of glass cuts the hair off...but, tbh, my most Final Canon Answer is the hospital team needs access to a lot of his upper body/head/neck region and they have to cut his hair short to save his life and operate or something. so he wakes up in the hospital with stan there...with shorter hair.

( he still looks fine as hell tho! don't get it twisted, i think it kinda still curls around his ears and stuff it's not too short but it's DRASTIC )

anyways...so...Yeah. short hair jersey. dramatic, i know! and i think him groing it out post rm is him going back to being healthy and i kind of wanted to keep it like that....buuuuuut...

I had an Even WOOOOORSE idea...

which was that around the time stan dyes his hair unhinged manic panic vampire red, kyle cuts his hair short again in a sort of He Liked My Hair Long, So I Cut it Short...way.

Progress Update!

As promised, here is a progress update on DemonVN!  This is just a general update of what I've done (or, at least, can remember doing...) over the past month or so.

GENERAL/MISCELLANEOUS STUFF

Character Sprites: I completely re-did all of Mordred and the Demon's sprites! They now have about 70-80 sprites between them, which is probably way too many, honestly.

Along with them, I finally attempted a Lillie sprite redraw, and am in the process of fixing the anatomy of Catherine and Mr. Li (there are. Issues). I will show those all off in the next progress report, probably.

Item Sprites: with the addition of a few new item sprites, I believe that these are 100% complete, minus any last-minute additions!  great news: demonvn now has feet in it

Mordred’s Journal Extras (Glossary, Journal Entries): I decided to add these in as a fun extra thing for the game!  The glossary covers in-game terms, and Mordred's journal entries detail some of his experiences moving to his new town. They're still in the process of being worked on, but we're getting there!

INTRODUCTION

In which Mordred tries to capture a demon, epically fails, and then gets himself possessed (shown above).

This section continues to be in development hell. Do not ask me how finished it is because I WILL start crying. The good news, though, is that I fully finished the section where Mordred has an evil monologue about much he wants to kill all his classmates! That doesn't seem like a lot, but it did involve a cg that took me way too long to draw for how simple it is + multiple new Mordred sprites.

I also am currently working on revising some of the opening backgrounds a little bit! They're almost done.

Anyway, all the rest of my progress has been tearing my hair out trying and failing to write some sections of this, so let's move on!

MIDDLE SECTION

In which Mordred is forced to search for a demon at his high school homecoming dance.  

This middle section is currently a MESS of half-written/mostly written stuff that needs to be fully cobbled together, but the good news is that it IS getting written. Shout out to Stephanie and Catherine for having the worst sections by FAR to write... You would think they would be easy, but nope!!!!!

I have implemented a lot of the items, at the very least! Some of the writing around their use/getting them is missing, but they ARE there.

Also, other good news: the DJ booth background + Mr. Li's section is all basically done! He has a shocking amount of dialogue, actually, considering you can get him to comment on all five students in the game. I also drew up some expressions for him, but more need to be added :^)

Most of Rusty's writing is also complete!! Very happy with how he's being presented :^) Now I just need to work on those sprites...

CLIMAX

In which multiple different characters all come together at once in the stupidest way imaginable.

So, I can't really get into the details of the progress I made without spoiling stuff, but I did do some writing for this section! I made some changes to how I wanted the endgame to go, which have in turn changed certain parts of this section. Overall, I'm happy with how it's coming along! Cannot wait for the inevitable [REDACTED] call-out post as a result of their actions here

ENDGAME

In which Mordred must deal with the consequences of his actions.

This outline for this section has been fully drafted, finally!!! who knew that changing it so that [REDACTED] would solve all the problems I was having with this + in various other sections. However, it is - for the most part - unwritten. Here's a section of the outline though

Along with this, I started work on one of the endgame backgrounds + I drew some of the items I needed for this section! Obviously, though, I can't show them off.....

EPILOGUE

Hopefully self-explanatory, given the name.

I did a little bit of writing for this, but for the most part, I've left it alone. It will be completed at some other time...

IN CONCLUSION...

Demonvn is currently at a whopping 35,000 words long (oh geez), and I would not be surprised if it was upwards of 40-45,000 by the time I get finished writing and editing everything. I remember when I thought it would be 1500-2000 max...

At the moment, my development is still slow, but it's being going at a steady pace at least! I still have no release date plans, and I don't think I will officially announce any until I am actually forcing people to beta test it.

Anyway, I'll put out another progress report on August 1! Lots of little things I need to work on before then, but my big goal is to finish at least ONE of the main sections. Who knows what that will be. Until then, I'll try to stay quiet on what I'm doing, but we'll see how well I can stick with that.

Random Metroid headcanons

-Currently space is embodied by two collections of planets then some independent ones. There’s the Galactic Federation that we know that is a Republic, though a lot of planetary elections for their official is pretty rigged, and there’s another one that’s a dictatorship.

-The dictatorship only loosely supports the Space Pirates, the Space Pirates being a smaller extremist group within it, though the dictatorship to preserve face will say they are not affiliated a lot of their weaponry is supplied through them.

-The Chozo are actually now independent of the Galactic Federation. Having helped formed it with each population having different beliefs and goals and the aging population they officially left to avoid any inner conflicts. 

-The Galactic Federation has a very prolific Navy. Split into different squadrons and typically different races are in their own section to standardize the process, it’s pretty rare you’ll see a non-human in the human sector and vice versa, Samus being one of the few exceptions as she was stuck in the human sector for being mostly human, but it’s clear she’s not that human the second she’s within them.

-It’s very easy to go independent or do illicit activities due to how open space is. Bounty Hunters are prolific due to being an easy way to skirt on the edge of legality without much paperwork involved because anything they do is their own doing and not representative of the body that is paying them, even if they’re paid to do it. 

-The Chozo are actually quite controversial, having been their own version of colonizers in the past. On one hand they gave many planets the technology beyond what they could have ever accomplished in the next few centuries. On the other it definitely came with a steep price to many. 

-Humans are mostly seen as annoying and inferior. They are everywhere and don’t have specializations like other species do. So they’re good grunts but if you want anyone truly competent a non human is preferred.

-You will always run into the risk of being poisoned in space solely because what is poison to you is good substance to another species and you have to be very, very careful. A lot of this was learned through trial and error.

-Chozo food is very bitter compared to human food. It’s also mostly seeds, nuts, greens, ect. Samus doesn’t really have the gut to process meat and dairy cause of this so she just says she’s vegan. She finds most foods too sweet due to being raised on Chozo food and will be found eating birdseed as a ‘snack’. 

-Samus also has a tendency to collect shiny things and has jumped off cliffs to collect a particularly shiny rock before. It stresses out whoever she’s with every time. 

-Samus is also messy and her living spaces aren’t very organized. She knows exactly where everything is though.

-Bounty Hunters have a tier list. Hitting ‘S Tier’ is nigh impossible, Samus, Sylux, and very few others have obtained it. Their prices are astronomical due to that. Samus tends to get bored though and give random discounts. 

-There’s a movie about Samus made by a human company. It’s bad. She found it hilarious how off they were. 

-Samus is actually a very dry person to interact with. She talks almost like she’s reporting on something and her humor can be easy to miss cause of that. When she gets emotional she goes quiet, even when happy so it’s hard to catch when she’s actually feeling intense emotions.

-Samus finds gender silly but likes femininity. Dresses, makeup, doing your hair, bright colors and flowers, and various other feminine things she finds very novel but fun. She especially loves wearing feminine Chozo clothes. While head pieces tend to face up to the sky for men, women’s face downward. She loves wearing headpieces that face downwards for that reason. 

-Samus tends to use her spare time to learn something, a habit instilled by the Chozo who only allowed her to watch documentaries and historically accurate period pieces if she wasn’t in active lessons. Because of that she’s really smart and will correct you if she catches an inaccuracy. 

-She plays video games now though, Space Animal Crossing is her favorite. She plays exclusively cute games. Ian Malkovich introduced them to her.

I am uhhh asking for maybe some, Swatch × oc × spamton.

For uhhh no specific reason 😳 *cough cough*

-Swatch just adores taking care of you. Even after a day of tending to the needs of others, they still will put in effort to see you smile. Their energy level varies, but if they can't do it now, they'll do it tomorrow.

-Swatch also likes to make sure that you get delicious food, clothing you feel great in, quality products. They see a lot of well made items in their work, as well as the occasional cheap ripoff they have to turn away, so they certainly have standards to judge.

-Spamton on the other hand likes to take advantage of easy opportunities and salvage everything remotely good. He brings you everything he gets even an inkling that you'll like. He does however have pretty good judgement of what you generally like.

-The above does lead to the occasional disagreement...Swatch may get a little harsh in telling Spamton to stop wasting money. Both of them sometimes get a little insecure that they're not giving you good gifts (Spamton because he doesn't buy the most luxurious things, Swatch because they don't find the most personal). They work it out.

-They both have an artistic side.

-Swatch has learned a lot about art theory and tools, although they don't feel the most confident in going all out unless given guidance. Swatch does enjoy sharing tips though, and happily gives any to you or Spamton if desired.

-Spamton is pretty open to suggestion, but mostly he loves to just make whatever is on his mind. His favorite is to paint.

-Swatch will happily supply you with any art supplies you desire. They love to see your creativity shine. They even quietly stick around, hoping you won't mind if they watch you. Of course, they'll give you space if you want it. But they love to watch your process and to see your finished art.

-Spamton also likes to watch you work. He likes to see what you make, how you do it, and that you're having fun. He also loves making art with you, whether that's a collaborative painting, trading art, or just doodling together. When he's in the mood to be creative, he might ask you to join.

-So of course expect times for all three of you to create together. Maybe that's doodling funny and cute things together (Spamton has quite a sense of humor and Swatch likes to draw your favorite animals), or each of you completing a different stage of the same piece, or all painting different sections of the same canvas. Even if you're not the most artistic, they'd love to include you in the fun!

-Both of these guys have a tendency to get wrapped up in work or otherwise heavily focused and forget to take care of themselves. Please remind them to eat and to sleep. Bringing/cooking them meals or giving them quiet time to cuddle or sleep actually means a lot to them and helps them to feel better.

-Sometimes you might find the two of them napping together.

-Game nights can be quite chaotic, in a fun way. They’re both intelligent and quick to make up their own strategy for any game. They can both be quite competitive, although Swatch has more of a silent lurking and deception strategy while Spamton bluffs and takes risks. Play something that requires dealing with other players like Monopoly or Catan to watch them really get intense.

-Swatch is a deep thinker and excellent listener, while Spamton is great at relating topics and keeping conversation alive. So expect long conversations between the three of you, and talking about everything from how to find happiness to street crossing.

-Typically, Swatch and Spamton aren’t competitive with each other, nor do they work in tandem often. They generally just each do their own thing and try to find a good balance of one-on-one and trio activities.

-That said, they do ask each other for help in wooing you. Maybe that’s picking out the right gift, learning a new skill, or proofreading letters.

-Special occasions are an exception though. They try to plan so that they each get time with you or that all three of you can do something together, and making sure there’s enough variety for everyone to show their love in their own way.

So, I’ve spent the past few weeks doing basically nothing but playing Tears of the Kingdom... and I’ve gotta talk about it a little. This is your warning that I will probably be posting about spoilers going forward, so do be careful if you’re trying to avoid that! 

I have a lot of thoughts about this game and somewhat mixed feelings, but on the whole I think it’s a very impressive game. Some more specific thoughts below the cut:

One thing that’s made me very happy so far: WE HAVE CHEESE NOW.

No, but seriously, I think the recipe system in BotW was a whole lot of fun and I’m so glad they expanded on it in TotK with new ingredients and recipes, plus there’s that new recipe system that records them for you! I’m this close to making a list of all the new recipes I can get my hands on, and I’m probably actually going to make a post for that soon. 

One thing that made me mad: okay if I’m being honest there’s a lot of things. But starting at my most petty, WHY did they nerf the Rito bows?? They’re supposed to be the archers, so if anything their bows should be more powerful! The bows wouldn’t even decay because they’re not made of metal so what is the justification here?? I want my base-20-damage Falcon Bow back! 

(With that being said, I’m so glad they let us have replica Champion weapons from the getgo while giving the original weapons to NPCs who don’t have to worry about weapon durability - it’s a great way to ensure that I (and many others, I’m sure) will actually use them.)

One thing that made me sad: Dinraal’s new path doesn’t go through Tanagar Canyon. 

This one’s partly personal, because Dinraal was the first dragon I ever saw as I was first crossing through the canyon in my initial playthrough of BotW, so I’ve always personally associated her with that area. But there’s also the fact that if I’m remembering correctly, it’s mentioned during the Champion’s Ballad that Dinraal has followed that path by Rito Village for so long that she’s considered a guardian spirit of the village, not to mention the fact that she’s a part of the trials that were created for the Rito Champion an entire 10,000 years ago, suggesting that she has inhabited that region for a very, very long time. And now she just... doesn’t?? 

This is just one of many changes in this game that felt just slightly disrespectful to the lore established in BotW, but it’s the only one I haven’t seen anyone else make note of yet, so here I am.

(Plus, her new path feels... a bit boring compared to the other two? Naydra and Farosh each do a proper loop through a section of Hyrule, but Dinraal just covers the same arc on land and then in the Depths. Now this is mostly outweighed by the fact that you can ride the dragons now and I’m absolutely ecstatic about that, but it was a little bit of a letdown realising she was just going back the way she came once she got out of the Depths...)

Still, with that being said... 

One thing that filled me with glee: you can ride on the dragons! I’ve spent a ridiculous amount of time just hanging out with them since I heard about this, and I’m probably going to spend a whole lot more time doing it in the future, too. It’s so much fun.

Okay, it’s official, I’m pretty much addicted to writing my own original Iris characters little fictional tidbits. They’re so fun to create and I really like developing relationships between my character and other peoples characters, it’s just really really fun. This time we have a character by @glass-trash-bab taking my little ALTR for a little walk around (and a few places with the two of them shouldn’t particularly be). To any of the people who have irissonas, if you want me to write a little interactive fiction with your character, I would be happy to do so, since it’s my easiest way of developing who they are as a person and deepening their character lore. :)

R had been waiting by the door of their room all day, buzzing with excitement. they were told by Bab that today would be opportunity to feed the animals in the side of the facility they usually weren’t allowed into. They had only seen pictures of the little puppies that had been taken by Iris only days ago, but they couldn’t control their excitement at the opportunity to actually meet them. They heard a buzz as someone scanned their access card on the other side of the cell door, and as it slid open R jump-hugged Bab, who’s come excitedly to collect them.

“Hiiiiiiii!” They yelled with the excitement of a child who is about to start school summer break.

“Hi R!” Exclaimed the bouncy-haired scientist. “ Okay. Now pipe down because I need to get you there without anyone, realising that I don’t have the authority to do this. And by anyone I mean Geeky. And Tae, but mostly Geeky.”

R ran their fingers over their lips to imitate a zip. Bab replied with an ecstatic thumbs up and ruffled R’s hair. Before R had a second to think, they were being rapidly ran down the hallway by their slightly taller companion. It was the fastest they thought they’d ever run down the hallways of the facility, or at least it was the fastest they’d run since they tripped over an unassuming Tae’s leg and fallen head-first down the east wing staircase. God bless inhuman durability.

They sped down the hallway and made about 50 right turns before arriving swiftly at a large set of double doors. R had never been in the section of the facility before, so it made for an exciting adventure today. Bab took a quick look around for anyone trying to stop there in the duos nefarious deeds, before quickly scanning their access card  on the doors scanning deck with the panic of someone trying to escape a deadly Mothman. They waited with bated breath for a few seconds, to see if a security guard would pick them up on the cameras and call an emergency lock down. The two of them held their breaths. Waiting… Waiting… Waiting… Click!

Bab grabbed onto the prosthetic arm of the ALTR next to them, and proceeded to skip happily out into the outdoor section of the animal containment area. R giggled uncontrollably at the circumstances of today’s escapades as the two slowed down for Bab to catch their breath. The ALTR ran up to a chain-link fence with a bit of small writing labelling, what was inside. R peeped between the gaps in the fence and stuck their non-prosthetic arm into a hole in the barrier, making clicking noises to beckon something out.

“Ah! No no no no no no no no! Don’t do that!” The accompanying scientist, acting quickly, grabbed the young ALTR around the waist and yanked them away from the barrier before a large mountain lion with multiple heads came bounding out of a hole in a small shack within the enclosure, right up to where R’s hand was poked-in. R looked up in surprise at the beast, a little relieved to have been pulled away from the barrier before something bad happened to their only leftover hand.

“Don’t poke your hands in the enclosures unless I do it too, danger child!” Bab, recovering from that sudden rush of adrenaline, led the two to another enclosure nearby with a green light above its gate, indicating that it was a safe set of animals to interact with.they both went in through the small gate and closed it behind them. R was wondering what kind of animal was inside of the enclosure, hidden behind the small sleeping undercover shack that it’s provided in case the weather was bad. Bab ran in and started making noises reminiscent of cooing to a baby, every word punctuated with a high-pitched squeal of happiness. They were followed by R, who suddenly realised the reason for the strange noises coming from inside the shack… puppies!!!

A little of labrador puppies with bouncing around this morning enclosure, their yapping audible now that R was inside the room. They instantly collapsed onto the floor to be hounded by the many small dogs, licked by their tiny little tongues, and hold out by their little high-pitched voices learning to bark. The two decided that almost having one of them be eaten by a mountain lion was definitely worth what happened when all of that running through the facility paid off. And although though Bab would get in quite a lot of trouble for taking the ALTR to an unauthorised area, R would be seeing this part of the facility with their employee friends many, many more times.

Right, well, thank you for reading this one. If you’ve got to this far, I really actually do appreciate it when people care about original character fiction as it makes my heart really happy! Oh I can finally answer this haha. Well to start with my own OCs, Dove gets along with Rovanna because they already exist in some AUs together and they're BFFs. I don’t know about my other OCs really since they’re from Cyberpunk and RDR2 haha, but Dove can get along with most people so maybe she'd get along with them.

Now, for other people’s OCs, there’s a few now that I think would definitely get along haha. @harmonyowl’s Grace (eventually anyways haha), your Cooper of course, and a lot of @derelictheretic’s OCs, namely, Heather (depending on the situation haha), Piper, Anya, and Dean! :D

What’s their singing voice like?

I think Dove would have a decent singing voice. Perhaps not perfect or well trained as some people but it’s nice and I think people would enjoy hearing her sing (if they can manage to convince and/or be close enough to her to get the privilege of hearing her sing.)

Dove doesn’t really play a whole lot of video games, so she’d probably be a button-masher. She just hits buttons and hopes it works haha. (Also I don’t know much about fighting games so this is the best I can offer haha. I don’t know what the different fighting styles would be lol.)

What are some mannerisms/quirks?

I had a bit of a hard time thinking of others, but here’s some that came to mind. 

If something is bothering or upsetting Dove, she tends to get quieter and more reserved. When she’s nervous, she usually crosses her arms over her chest or messes with her shirt sleeve or shirt hem. She also tends to (subtly) move away from people who are making her nervous or upset (and sometimes moves closer to people she trusts or she feels safe around).

She will frequently just walk away from an argument when it’s really upsetting her. She tries not to feed into the anger so she goes to cool off on her own for a bit.

Depending on the person she’s talking to, she can sometimes be a bit stubborn or has an overwhelming need to prove herself (again it’s depending on the situation/context, otherwise she’ll just walk away or dismiss the conversation).

Describe their favorite meal.

It’s so hard for me to pick just one favorite meal for her haha. I think last time I said barbacoa tacos? Nothing beats a corn tortilla with delicious juicy barbacoa and cilantro, and some lime. (Oh and it has to be beef cheek barbacoa, not just seasoned beef roast, unless she’s living in Hope County…then it has to be beef roast lol. Sorry Dovie.)

What do they do when they’re bored?

She would probably try to go spend some time outdoors, going for a walk, fishing, or something along those lines. She’d probably collect some new plants/flowers for her journal too. She would probably try to sketch something in her journal too. Oh and photography of course!

If none of that wasn’t interesting to her at that moment, I could see her watching a movie (at home or at a theater) or going out to eat somewhere. And depending on the universe/storyline, she may go see if she can spend time with a close friend or significant other. She likes spending time with loved ones.

How do they express love/affection for someone?

Dove is just full of love/affection honestly haha. I think she really loves touch-oriented affection such as hugs, kisses, cuddles, etc. But she also very much likes giving gifts or setting up a surprise for her loved one. She can also be vocally affectionate, but she’s a little more reserved about it at first, but once she’s very serious about a relationship she is much more open about expressing her love verbally. 

Most embarrassing thing that could/has happened to them?

Hmm, I think the most embarrassing thing that could happen to her would be someone making fun of her interests/hobbies or things that truly make her happy. She already has to endure criticism from her parents about those things, so when people she meets or wants to be friends with do it, it’s very disheartening.

As for my book list, it's mostly science fiction and fantasy, with several nonfiction and some litfic. (There are a few exceptions -- I don't really like books about the environment in general, for instance, though I'll read some because they're great examples of the genre.) But I do have a list of favorite books from other countries (in roughly the order I read them) so maybe that could be a good way to answer the question?

There are some works on that list that I love and some that I really hate, so I try to have them in my mind whenever I make a selection, but it might not be a "top-notch book recommendation list" because of that.

Finished Undertale (both Neutral and True Pacifist) for the first time ever (I got stuck on Asgore when I was younger :/), and... fuck, man. That shit was so good.

I was initially going to do a Genocide run, mostly for the sake of saying I did it and seeing it for myself, and also because I like Fucked Up And Twisted shit, but, fuck... after befriending everyone, I don’t think I could. They’re all so good and this game humanizes (monsterizes?) them so well that they... kinda feel like actual friends? I started fucking clapping and cheering when I was freeing their SOULs during the Asriel fight, which is something I usually do when something I’m super duper invested in makes me really happy. Hell, after the bit with Flowey telling you to leave the game alone and not ERASE it makes me never wanna touch it again. I feel attached to these guys and I just want the best for them. :’)

The writing is fun, the fights are fun even if I’m getting my ass beaten, and the music kicks fucking ass, naturally.

My only complaint would be that the game felt a *little* short? It feels like there should at least be one more section between CORE and the Castle/whatever the fuck the final area is called again, but that’s probably because I inadvertently blitzed through CORE because I just followed the signs telling me where “The End” is, and also used the Spider Donut skip on the Muffet fight.

Other than that? Perfect fucking game. 9/10.

Anyways I am staring very intensely at them cus oooo I love those tiny fuckers that bring me so much joy and life you don't understand. Playing Minecraft when I was little just gave me a fondness for them vwv

Creepers were actually originally created as a weapon, the humanoid versions aren't understood though. One day they just kinda existed out of nowhere, code just does that sometimes.

Variable diet but mostly carrion and rocks. I just think them eating gross things is amusing when you bring in Doc. Him and Cleo sometimes eat together because of gross diet requirements vwv

Section of How They Explode

First off I know this isn't entirely scientifically realistic, but it's block game so of course it isn't.

The explosion actually comes from their fur. It's a chain reaction and chemical sorta thing. Basically there is a chemical or protein (idk what it would be) that they secrete (aka; sweat) onto their fur. This gives it an oily sort of texture, but honestly petting them might be a bad idea anyways since it can fuck with oils in general.

The start happens when they’re threatened, clicking together two specialized hairs that act like a spark for a lighter. This is only done in extreme scenarios, but they’re extremely skittish.

Some are kept kinda like farm animals (basically a replacement for actual game mechanics cus I love these floomfy boys so much). So long story short, give them happy and healthy lives, and you can collect the fur to make into gunpowder.

Mini Note: Since Bdubs veterinarian headcanon, he actually checks the animal based farms sometimes. Ravengers and creepers fall under than to some extent (though they are hostile mobs). Season 7 wasn’t very fun for him <3

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn

I did it! I read my third book for my TIMES Best 100 YA Challenge, and I’m happy to say it was another really good one. A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith (1943) wasn’t one I was necessarily expecting to like, but I was pleasantly surprised.

This blog post will contain spoilers.

Preconceptions

Had I previously read this book before the challenge? No.

I knew even less about A Tree Grows in Brooklyn (ATGIB) than I did about Anne of Green Gables when I started it. I had extremely vague memories of my mom reading it for a bookclub some 15+ years ago, and all I remember was that she was not a fan. As a kid, I assumed it was a book about just staring at a tree because apparently I had no idea that titles could be symbolic. That’s all I had going in, otherwise I was completely fresh as a reader.

Overall Feelings

I really enjoyed this one! I think I cynically expected this to be a bummer throughout but was delighted when things actually resolved in a happy ending for the characters. The overall arc of coming-of-age in poverty was really well paced and the ending felt earned, not just a let’s wrap this up and make everyone happy again thing.

I could see why it wouldn’t be everyone’s thing though. A lot of the book is a slow-paced character study, centered around Francie primarily as well as her world. The book takes its time with the details, it’s not very plot-driven. I like character studies though, so it was really enjoyable for me.

Presentation

ATGIB is separated into five “books” that detail different time periods in the characters’ lives. In many ways, it reminded me of acts in a play, which the book nodded towards as one of Francie and her brother Neely’s favorite pastimes as children was going to see local theater shows.

Book one is an introduction of sorts, we meet Francie at age 11 and get to know her world in Williamsburg. She comes from a poor, working-class family but they seem to be doing okay for the time-being. Francie and Neely help her mom with grocery shopping, they’re extremely involved in the vibrant neighborhood. There’s a sense of childhood wonder here, their financial troubles shifts into the background to make room for the imagination and naivety that comes with being a little kid. The book notes a scraggly tree that seems to stubbornly keep growing despite the rough living conditions. Book one is largely expository, showing the reader the status quo of our protagonist.

Then, book two, we shift back in time to Francie’s parents’ upbringings. Johnny and Katie are immigrants from Ireland and Austria respectively. They get married young, while Katie is in her upper teens and Johnny is in his early twenties, and Katie quickly becomes pregnant with Francie. Johnny doesn’t handle the news well, taking to drinking, while Katie works hard to try to set aside money so her future children will have a better life than she did growing up. Book two is mostly about providing context for the rest of the story.

Book three is the largest section in the book and returns to Francie’s perspective. We follow her through her adolescence, as the family slips further into poverty. Katie is working multiple jobs, Johnny can’t hold down anything steady and his alcoholism gets gradually worse but he seems to try to be the “fun parent.” Francie adores her father and finds her mother stern. The novel does an excellent job showing us the perspective of a child who might not have the context— that her “fun” parent is often avoiding responsibilities while their “strict” parent is barely holding things together. There’s a lot of tension built until book three concludes with Johnny eventually passing from alcohol poisoning, leaving his struggling family and pregnant wife behind.

In book four, the family grieves and both kids have to drop out of school to make ends meet, especially now that there’s a new baby to support. Francie lies about her age to get a factory job and gradually, with Francie and Neely’s income, the family starts to gain shaky ground. We see Francie grow into her young adulthood, facing heartbreak, new friendships, and newfound independence from having income of her own. Neely is able to return to school and Francie takes classes on the side to continue her education, things are looking up.

Finally, book five, Francie is 17 and slated to go to university in the fall. Katie remarries an officer in town and they move out of their apartment into a more comfortable home. As they leave, Francie notices the tree in their neighborhood has somehow continued to thrive despite the adversity. I could see the tree motif being on-the-nose, but I choose to see it as the book being blunt about its metaphors, I liked it. The family is at peace at last.

The structure having that build, the climax in book three with Johnny’s death, and then conflict resolution was such a welcoming and organic way to write the novel, I really appreciated Smith’s approach to storytelling. I think this book would be an ideal one to study in high school English because of how clearly laid out the structure, themes, and character development are.

A Little Background

The first thing any resource describes ATGIB as is “semi-autobiographical,” since much of the book revolves around an adolescent girl and daughter of immigrants growing up in Williamsburg and that’s precisely how Betty Smith grew up. Smith and the protagonist, Francie, have a lot in common: their birthday is December 15th, they moved around a lot in their youth, they survived poverty, they had a stern mother, and their father passed of alcoholism in their late teens.

There’s a lot of descriptions in the book that are so incredibly detailed that I found myself thinking, “oh, this is describing a real memory the author had.” The first time I realized this was early on, Francie describes a type of bread her mother would make by grinding up stale crumbs, mixing in ketchup, water, and onion powder, reshaping it, and baking it into a new loaf. There’s another point when Francie finds she has a knack for storytelling but that her teachers feel her compositions on poverty are too grim, and Francie spitefully vows to eventually tell her story, unflinchingly, about her upbringing. I fully believe that this is a real situation that Smith encountered as a teenager, and this book is the result.

The book deeply resonated with people, to the point where even soldiers in WWII would carry the mass-market paperback edition with them because the book so viscerally described Brooklyn and Williamsburg and was a very human-feeling book (NPR). The fact that that human feeling has persisted today shows off Smith’s masterful skills as an author and storyteller.

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn deserves no less than 5-stars, it was an excellent window into a different world that had a lot of heart.

I’ve already started reading The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank for the fourth book on my list! It’s extremely interesting reading a diary account published posthumously, I think both experiencing and reviewing it is going to look very different from the others on my list.

many thoughts about Scar in Last Life

We all know Scar is one of the standouts of Last Life; he’s always been one of the key players ever since 3rd Life, driving conflicts and shaping the course of the server. His chaotic nature lends itself perfectly to 3rd/Last Life, and he seems to have only refined it in the hiatus between seasons.

In 3rd Life, Scar was more of a subjective villain. From his own perspective and Grian’s perspective, he wasn’t scary at all! The two of them were just having fun and causing problems – sure, they threatened people, but their dumb antics together made them just feel like two friends messing around; their POV was lighthearted until the final session, really. From other perspectives, however (particularly Dogwarts’ POVs), that was not how the two of them came across. They felt malicious, scary in how casually they approached such a bloodthirsty game. They’d laugh as they took lives, showing no care for anybody but themselves – they’d betray their allies in a heartbeat without an ounce of remorse, and the rest of the players knew it. Scar wasn’t someone to fear from his own POV.

Since Last Life began, however, Scar has become very openly malicious. Even watching his own POV, it’s hard to see him as anything but a villain – his own comment section is full of people commenting on how scary he suddenly seems. I want to expand on some of these villainous moments, because holy fuck, Scar.

In session 1, Scar is certainly a prominent figure, but we mostly get to see his classic silly Scar antics. Sure, he plans on “selling souls”, but it feels like the equivalent of his reputation points in S1. We still don’t get the sense of him going full villain arc yet. He allies with Joel and commits a crime, and we all expect another lighthearted Scar scam which definitely does not go to plan.

And that is what happened… sort of. He’s immediately caught by Scott and Pearl, etc etc etc. The two of them cheerfully agree a scheme to try and kill Jimmy, but that casual discussion of murder is as bad as they get.

Session 2, Scar is chosen as one of the two boogeymen, alongside Joel.

Things go decidedly not to plan immediately. The two of them had agreed last session to try and kill Jimmy, and were supposed to be trusting enough to tell each other if they’re the boogeyman – and yet what does Scar do? Immediately try and push Joel into lava. He’d betray Joel without a second thought – already a contrast to 3rdLife, where upon turning red Scar threw flowers at Grian and asked if they could still be friends. He doesn’t succeed, of course, and Scar and Joel realise they’re both boogeymen, before parting ways.

Scar heads to the nether, where he immediately decides to deceive Etho and Bdubs into thinking he’s weak and has no food, so that he can get close to them nonthreateningly or something. I’ll talk about this more later, but here we get to see what a good liar Scar actually is. People want to assume that he’s all bark and no bite, that he’s a schemer who poses no real threat – when Scar plays into this, he can be reallyconvincing.

The next big moment I want to talk about is, of course, Joel’s trap. The first thing to comment on here is that Scar cries “Joel, are you trying to kill your best buddy?!”, and I can’t work out whether this is Scar acting to diffuse suspicion, or genuine surprise that he’d pull the trap when Scar was right there, but either way it definitely has the former effect. None of the Southlanders suspect Scar in the slightest. Until Scar murders Mumbo in a matter of seconds.

What’s really horrifying about this is that Scar had been begging Mumbo to ally with him just last session. And yet here… not only does he go for Mumbo without hesitation, his reaction afterwards is downright chilling. He just laughs, and tells the others “Welcome to Magical Mountain!” – it’s really quite like a movie villain in how little he seems to care. He doesn’t actually say a word about killing Mumbo; again, despite having desperately wanted to ally with him. To Scar, this was nothing more than an opportunity. Or maybe it’s all a show to him. Maybe it’s both. Scar doesn’t actually care about winning this game – to him, it’s more fun to put on as good a show as possible, and drag as many people down with him as possible (which is definitely a “cc!Scar being a good entertainer” thing, but it translates very well into being a LL!Scar character trait too).

He then hands Joel some supplies, and with the exact same level of nonchalance, tells him to go burn Scott and Pearl’s house down. I’m… getting the sense he enjoyed burning down Etho’s castle in 3rdLife.

Not much of note happens during his subsequent conversation with the Southlanders beyond him failing an initiation spectacularly – after this, he heads back to Joel. They chat from opposite ends of a broken bridge, which is quite a poetic scene honestly, representing the gap between their lives, the destruction of their alliance, etc. I’m just here to talk about Scar’s villainous moments, though, so let me point out one specific line from this conversation.

“I did avenge you, to be fair - Mumbo, I burned him to death, which was enjoyable. I heard him cry, so it was- yeah, that was a thing.”

Just… what the fuck, Scar? What? I know he tried to push the “red lives are psychopathic and feel nothing except a small sense of happiness when people die” in 3rd Life, but this was definitely a lie or at least an exaggeration, because 3l!Scar definitely had a much wider range of emotions than that. Either way, here he doesn’t even have the excuse of being a red life; this is just active malice, pure and simple. Bdubs had a similar level of pride in his boogeyman kill, but I never got the sense that he enjoyed it like Scar did.

Scar goes off to visit Scott and Pearl, and figure out whether they have the enchanting table or not. Note the emphasis on simply figuring it out, not actually getting the enchanting table. Here’s where I want to talk about Scar being a great liar: he fully convinces them into thinking that he was willing to trade lives for the enchanting table, and then he convinces them that he’s so desperate to get the table that he’ll lie about Joel burning their house down. The thing is, Scar had no intention of ever getting the table at that moment – he wasn’t going to trade lives for it to begin with. He’d try his luck at threatening them, but nothing more. He got exactly what he wanted out of that situation: proof. Meanwhile, Scott and Pearl were left believing they’d outwitted him, that they’d called his bluff and bullied him into leaving. They never saw his true intentions, never saw him as an actual threat. Scar is much smarter than people believe, which only makes him all the more threatening.

And finally, he goes on to prove this intelligence even further. He figures out that Scott and Pearl planned to trade for the enchanting table simply by seeing Scott ask Lizzie if she’s home in chat. He then goes to visit Lizzie, and she tells him she declined their offer. What’s notable about this scene is how much less belligerent Scar is than usual: he readily accepts what Lizzie says for once in his life and leaves without being too annoying about it. He later talks about lulling the others into a false sense of security, letting them think he’s not after the enchanting table anymore; that makes me think his visit to Lizzie was purely to confirm that the offer was even made, and he’s now certain that she accepted it. It’s not hard to work out, especially if he noticed her life count.

So, all in all, if you’re not scared of Scar in Last Life, you most definitely should be.
