Off from what I usually post I sorta wanted to rant about The Villainess Manga Anthology?

This is gonna be a super long rant about something im way too passionate about so if you’re just following me for my mental illness around toku men keep scrolling

I’ve been reading it since they first stared releasing the anthologies back in like 2019 or so and at the time I think the villainess manga subgenre was new enough that all the stories in it felt really fresh and fun. Like there really weren’t that many villainess series’ yet so even the stories that weren’t that good still filled the niche of just providing more content for this sort of small subgenre.

Especially in the first 3 volumes it felt like for as many bad chapters there’d be (the first chapter of volume 1 stands out as being especially bad) there was always 2 or 3 chapters that were really good.

Flowery Path of Evil was so good that unless im misremembering, it’s the only chapter that got TWO sequels in later volumes in addition to its own serialization.

But since it started publication so many other fantastic villainess web novels, manga, and even manhwa have been published that the contents of the anthology have just started feeling really stale. Like starting with volume 5 it began to feel like a lot of the chapters were just doing the same thing as prior chapters, and especially the same as other stories in publication.

This is sort of an issue that’s propagated with the subgenre as a whole actually, since we’ve hit a point where the most unique stories have already been in publication for years now. Like you can only riff off of what bakarina does so many times before it just stops being viable. Like you ca only retell the same story with a new coat of paint so many times before it just stops having anything to appeal to new readers.

And even though I say that there are so many stories out right now that do run with completely different beats, and that do actually try to do new things with the subgenre. The webnovel space especially has some really interesting riffs on the standard formula that just doesn’t ever get adapted unfortunately.

In general it feels like the subgenre as a whole has just hit a wall int terms of innovation, like every new story coming in is following a super strict formula that admittedly, is sort of a result of the subgenre’s definition.

But at the same time that doesn't have to be an issue with single chapter anthology stories like the villainess anthology uses! But so far volume 7 feels like every chapter has played out exactly the same with all the same notes.

Like I realize that the big note that’s expected of a villainess story is the condemnation but it just feels like that's all that’s getting portrayed in the anthology chapters.

Like again that’s obviously the focal point of these sorts of stories but the best chapters in the anthology were always about what happened after the event.

But so far volume 8 and by extension a lot of volume 6 has just revolved entirely around the event itself, not going into the before or after of it in any capacity. And the result of it is almost always the same?

Again I understand that’s sort of the appeal of the genre is to have that reversal of the condemnation but at this point the subgenre itself has just evolved to a point where there has to be more than just the condemnation to have draw.

I realize this has just been an essay’s worth of me complaining about a super niche subgenre of basically another subgenre but I got to have the experience of reading villainess stories when they first shot into popularity, and I’ve gotten to see how the subgenre evolved over the years! So in a really weird way I feel really attached to the stories I’ve actually kept up with, so seeing one of the serializations I actually bought the physical volumes of stagnate like this just feels really awful.

02. The crown prince's fiancee wants to marry for love and acts like a villainess, to get him to break up with her.

04. Having bullied the her rival in love her fiancee the crown prince breaks off their engagement and has her marry the middel aged prime minister, this awakens her previous life memories and the fact that she has a thing for older dudes.

06. The crown prince's fiancee is an amazing woman when ever her lover comes to her and praises another womans talent saying he's so touched he wants to break up she trains her skills and surpasses her rival this has been happing for 10 years, now during the last year at the academy what will happen when she has enough? 08. The second prince has always loved his childhood sweetheart both had promised to get married in the future but the first prince stole her from him just to spite him, but he then as the crown prince breaks of said engagement at a party to marry a "saintess", what will happen next?

Status:

I have seen all three volumes translated about 16 chapters roughly 30-45 pages long each.

Opinion:

I really like those stories. I legitimately have a (almost) perfect over view of those kind of stories (i only check the raw sites once in awhile i can never stop once i start) .

I really like the variety, this anthology has everything if you read a story here it sure as hell has a novel or manga or even webtoon.
