Math has never been your forte, but you are confident that you passed that exam. Walking to your dorm, you see a bunch of girls crowding around your door, including your roommate Tiana. You walk up to your roommate, confused about the commotion.

“Ti, what the hell is going on?”

“Looks like you got an admirer girl and a rich one at that!” She responds, eyes glued to the door. You follow her eyes to see the door covered in roses, looking similar to a rose gate. In the middle is a pinned envelope, yet to be touched. You walk towards the ominous envelope, maneuvering through the crowd of curious young women. With hesitation, you unpin the envelope from the door, opening it with trembling hands.

‘My love, your beauty continues to perplex me. Your eloquent voice and bright intelligence just make my love for you stronger. It’s hard to stay away, as your smile always brightens my day. One day my love, we will finally meet.

‘It’s him again.’ You think to yourself as you take another look at the roses. Despite the initial surprise, you can’t help but appreciate the mysterious gesture. The crowd soon dispersed, leaving only you and Tiana.

“Do you have any clue who this guy could be?”

“No clue Ti. Also, I don’t have class tomorrow so it’s gonna be wash day.”You mention, making her pat your back in solidarity. Since childhood, you’ve been raised to love your natural hair but lord knows that dense hair has its gripes. You go into your dorm to gather your hair products for tomorrow.

“What song are you gonna perform next?”

“I was thinking ‘Delilah by Florence and the Machine’.” You reply, undoing your pineapple bun. Tiana hums in approval, remembering the time you two went to see the artist in Seattle last year. You begin to detangle your hair while Tiana leaves for her evening class. This admirer is still in your mind as you finish sectioning your hair. So many thoughts considering this person’s identity.

Are they in my class?

Have I seen them before?

Do they even go to this school?

How did they find my dorm?

You prepare for bed, not sure what to expect tomorrow.

You wake up, feeling refreshed and ready for the day. You collect your bag of supplies, grateful Tiana left early so you can have the bathroom to yourself. The hot water turns on, filling the room with steam as you step into the shower. Hot water running through your hair and down the curves of your body, it's the most relaxed you’ve felt in weeks. The satisfaction of scrubbing your scalp free of dirt and hot water down your back has you in complete bliss. The sound of books being knocked over interrupts your peace, startling you.

“Ti, is that you?!” You holler, anxiety rising when you get no answer. You finish putting conditioner on the last section of hair before turning the shower off. You tiptoe out of the shower, still hearing those booming footsteps. Now realizing that it’s definitely not your roommate, you freeze in fear, afraid of what the intruder is possibly capable of. You hear the sound of rummaging and drawers being opened, confirming in your mind that you’re being robbed. The booming footsteps almost echo in the room before the door shuts completely. You muster up the courage to leave the bathroom, relieved that the assailant is gone, and start checking the room for missing items. Tiana’s side of the room was thankfully left untouched, but you can’t say the same for your space. Your belongings are scattered on the floor, your bed looking like someone just immersed themselves into your bedding. You then turn towards your laundry basket, which has been obviously rummaged through. You check to see that of few items are missing. A band t-shirt, your favorite black lace bra, and a pair of pajamas. Giving yourself a minute to process this, you’re no longer frightened, more perplexed than anything else.

“Who the hell steals dirty laundry?!” Tiana exclaims, tying up her braids.

“I have no clue. Probably some creep from the frat houses.” You muttered. Inside, you were still shaking but you at least wanted to keep your composure for work tonight. You make a note to report the incident Monday morning.

Your melodic voice entices the audience. Your flowing sky blue dress with flowers adorning the sleeves and voluminous afro adds to the elegance of the performance. You start to forget the frightening incident as you practically drown yourself in the song.

Despite the song being a lot different from what you usually sing, the audience is still receptive and cheering you on. You even spin around in your dress to add flare.

While James waited at the table for their order, Tiana went to the bathroom to powder her nose. Their children were with grandpa, the restaurant was nice and fancy and the two of them had the whole night just for themselves.

Their marriage had some lovely points, but Tiana couldn’t deny that James was right when, instead of counselling, he suggested she could buy some Shift Inc. products.

At first the mature woman was sceptical, she was always stressed and busy. She didn’t have time for silly nonsense, but after some nagging from her husband, she agreed and bought a small dose of powder with goat hormones to improve her breast circulation. Her dad was pissed, but the kids came to visit her every weekend, James did that plus along with every Tuesday. He couldn’t help but smile at the sight of such a peaceful scene. His wife may have been a farmyard nanny, but at the very least she was no longer stressed by life.

I had a club meeting on Tuesday. It was a club made by and for black women, and it was one of the most beautiful things I have ever done and experienced in my life. There is something really healing about being surrounded by people who can understand where you're coming from and where you've been. It's an experience that I wish on everyone. Not just that but the Little Mermaid trailer came out, and even with all the racism and unwelcome opinions. Seeing those little black girls see someone who looks like them made me emotional. I think it also healed a part of me that I didn't even know needed healing. Even though my generation got Tiana, we never saw a black woman in real-life being portrayed as ethereal, and beautiful, and feminine. Even typing this is making me cry lol, but I think every black woman and black femme really needed to see that. Halle looked so beautiful and her voice was so angelic. I hope and pray that none of those disgusting and sick individuals on the internet touch her soul and her well-being. She deserves good things, all black women do. I hope Disney does us justice.

Today has been weird, um I'm not sure why. I was just not in the mood to go to class, but I had to because for some reason this semester professors have been MUCH more strict with their attendance policy. Like last year I BARELY ever went to class lmao. Don't get me wrong I like that the strict policy keeps me accountable because you do SO much better in a class when you ACTUALLY go lol. But I also wish it was a little bit laxer so that I wouldn't be limited to only two mental health days. Like I could've used a mental health day today to just sleep in, but in case I have a worse day in the future I want to make sure I'm covered. But I feel better about this semester than I did last year. I'm also looking for a therapist. I just think I'm way overdue for that next step in my life. I've kept putting it off and not taking it seriously but I feel ready now. To take that next step in letting go of the baggage that has been weighing me down since I was a child:)

On a sillier note, I wanna dye my hair ginger SO FUCKING BAD OMG. Like I already got a new piercing (septum), and a new tattoo (tramp stamp), I'm building my dream wardrobe. All I need is my hair lol. I've been trying to take more risks with my appearance and now I'm just trying everything out lmaooo
