Christmas is one of the few traditions kept alive in Jackson, with handmade paper decorations about the houses, small Christmas trees nursed to health with the help of Joel, children running around singing festive songs you'd missed for so many years. You felt truly alive for the first time in a long time.

Joel's smile is light, barely visible behind the beard curated from yarn, but you’re close enough to see his upturned lips. His eyes flick over your outfit, a green t-shirt turned dress, some striped tights and a stroke of damn near magic with long expired makeup transforming you into Santa’s little helper.

"Cute as a button." He mumbles. A steady stream of children enter the makeshift grotto and you don't get to enquire. Not that you would. Your whole body is ablaze with nervousness, Joel's comment striking deep, so deep in fact you probably could've foreign caking deep pink out of date blush to your cheeks. The day goes off without a hitch, the smiles on the children's faces when they got to meet the Father Christmas, the endless amounts of crayon covered decorations each kid got to design, the supply of sugar cookies that dwindled far too quickly. You almost felt bad for the sugar rush their parents would have to deal with later on in the evening. But they wouldn’t care. It’s Christmas.

By the end of the night you’re beyond tired. A few stranglers help with some off he menial tidying, but you send them on their way, your morning plans of self indulgent cleaning spree at risk of being disrupted.

The town is quiet, but brightly lit when you lock the double doors, and you use the rare moment of peace and quiet to appreciate all that you’ve endured.

Joel fears that's about as close as hell get to a confession. He admired your normalcy in a world far beyond it. He admired you, albeit secretly.

The two of you walk in silence, until he’s walking up your porch stairs and you’re panicking about the once welcomed silence, filling it with an invitation into your home. He accepts with a quiet smile, taking in the festive lights and handcrafted decor.

You guide him through the small hallway into a tiny living room, filled with random trinkets and furniture that’s worse for wear. Its more homely than his humble abode, and it screams you, warm and inviting.

A Kiss for a Gift - a Wolfwren Christmas fanfiction

A/N: Hello everyone! Merry Christmas! As advertised multiple times I've posted a Christmas one-shot set in my High School AU. Here is the beginning and if you want to read the whole story the link will be at the end!

The Life Day Market of Capital City was the biggest in Lothal. The whole plaza at the foot of the central tower was taken over by lights, wooden chalets and all the Life Day decorations the place could handle, green and red and gold everywhere the eye stopped. People lined up for warm drinks and hot treats. Vendors displayed jewelry and paintings and socks, the perfect gift for your family on Life Day. And Sabine had had the terrible idea of letting Hera sign her up as a volunteer, again.

All the streets leading into the plaza had been closed off except two, the entrance and the exit. A banner hung above the entrance, welcoming everyone into the market. If it wasn’t enough, however, Sabine was the extra welcome. She sat in a tiny wooden box at the corner of the entrance, too cramped up to move. She was supposed to give additional information to the people, but she wasn’t even sure what information she could give them. There was no map to the market, it was made up of two concentric circles of cabins and impossible to get lost in. The time the market opened and closed? They had a big sign near every entrance for that. People walked by her without sparing her a glance, probably as confused by her presence as she was annoyed by it. She scrolled on her phone, draining the battery to keep boredom at bay. She’d brought a pad and pencil to draw but she barely had the space to move her arms.

At least she had avoided the role of one of the droids in the Santa Clause factory like the year before, she thought as Ezra brushed his way back to her, dressed in a poor man’s droid’s costume.

“Why did I have to be a droid?” he complained as he leaned over the small counter of Sabine’s booth.

“I don’t know what’s more cramped. This box or your droid costume.”

“It’s the costume, trust me.”

He tugged on the sleeves yet they continued to hike up past his wrists.

“Anyway, Hera is asking if you want a snack.”

Sabine sighed. The only privilege of working for the market was that they didn’t have to cue twenty minutes for a crepe. Still, with her legs cramping up and her elbows rubbing against wood all day, it didn’t feel worth it. And if the PA system behind her played that stupid Life Day song again, she was going to take it down herself.

Ezra stared at her, waiting for an answer. Her gaze migrated away from her brother to the familiar blonde who had just squeezed through the crowd at the entrance. A big smile appeared on Sabine’s lips as she spotted Shin. She waved at her. Shin gave her a small smile and brushed past the crowd to get to her.

Akeshu Holiday Heist Special WIP

This was going to be a oneshot sequel to my completed Persona 5 Akechi/Joker fanfic, Chase the Joker, set nearly one year after the ending. While I still have a few oneshots set in their future planned, this one's entire concept was changed, and the fic was scrapped. Since I had fun writing their banter, I'm going to post the WIP here anyways. You can read underneath the cut! As it's incomplete, there is no concrete ending to this segment at this time.

Sometimes, life could feel just like a Christmas movie. One could find the true meaning of holiday cheer amidst the chaos, no matter who they are or where they came from. It was a special time of year, and whether people celebrated or not, sometimes beautiful magic happened. 

Joyful moments could be shared underneath the tree as families discover the true meaning of the holiday season, whether related to Santa Clause, the meaning of life, or Kentucky Fried Chicken. True love could be discovered underneath the mistletoe, all while some coworker’s annoying as hell kids at the office Christmas party went ooh or help me or perhaps ew, gross much? On occasion, the stars aligned just right each December, and picturesque moments captured in the mind’s eye forever would feel just like the more diverse Hallmark movies. All three of them, if you were being generous.

It was at these times one must remember Die Hard was also a Christmas movie…which was the evidence Akira needed to utilize for their current situation, no matter how Goro denied it, all while they drove towards some rich bastard’s Christmas bash on a hellbent mission.

Car rides anywhere were enjoyable as long as they were with each other, and in the end that was all Akira could ask for. As Goro rambled on and on about cultural variations of the holiday, and how supposedly none of them involved homicide, Akira just held back laughter while applying the reddest lipstick known to man. He hadn’t ever worn a cocktail dress before today, but no one could deny he looked incredible. He was dressed to the nines in luscious red, a silky wig, and enough makeup that not even his own parents would recognize him, and yet it wasn’t technically for a date. What a homophobic shame dealt to him by the gods themselves.

…Okay, his parents hadn’t seen him in years, and the last time had been Goro punching his father in the face. It was better stated that not even his cat would recognize him, but Akira didn’t want to think about that either. So instead he just bickered with the man he loved.

“Honey, listen,” Akira countered, after Goro ranted for the entire length of some bubbly kpop song about being merry and happy. “I know you pride yourself on being right about everything, and I support you unconditionally, but have you ever considered you’re totally wrong about literally everything? We are living out a Christmas movie right now. I’m right.”

“Stating I’m wrong without providing actual evidence as to why again, Akira?” Goro said with an eye roll, though his rolling eyes struggled to stay focused on the road when Akira’s dress kinda showed his upper thigh. “You would not have lasted one week in a university setting’s debate team, and it shows.”

“Hey, neither of us went to college, on account of me being a sexy criminal superstar and you being sexy and also super dead. At least I read dozens of books on mythology and cultural figures when we still had the Nav,” Akira said right back. “I’m a master debater–”

“I swear if you say ‘and also a masturbator,’ I’m hitting the brakes at mach speed.”

“I mean no, I don’t need to do that when we’re in the same room twenty-four hours a day. Wow, you have such a dirty mind, did you know that?”

Goro finally stared not at the road nor Akira’s legs, but a secret third thing–his smug, stupid face, so he could shoot Akira the nastiest of glares. “Quite the talk from someone who made a kidnapping roleplay joke months after literally being kidnapped.”

Okay, that had been one time. And they were not talking about it. Not if Akira could help it. He finished applying the last of his makeup and examined himself in the mirror. If looks could kill, Akira wouldn’t need a knife tonight. Tragically, he still needed a knife, but at least he was pretty. 

“I never joked about that again, give me and my coping mechanisms some credit. Anyways, enough talk about my abduction. Ever heard of Krampus? He’s like the Mementos Grim Reaper used to be, except real, and festive, and I’m pretty sure he murdered children. How’s that for Christmas cheer?”

“I appreciate the sentiment behind a morally dubious Christmas special, but…Krampus aside, the holiday genre as a whole is ill-suited for activities such as murder, once we put aside frequently debated titles. There is a reason films such as Die Hard and American Psycho are commonly dismissed from a place among happy-go-lucky Christmas movies, and that’s due to them only portraying the holiday as background noise in favor of an action plot. It’s only a timestamp when all is considered, nothing more.”

God, Goro was so pretentious. No wonder Akira was in love with him. Here they were, driving towards some multimillionaire’s holiday party with a heist in mind and also assassination if push came to shove, and yet Goro was blasting some American artist’s holiday music on the Jokermobile speakers and discussing American fucking Psycho versus the concept of Christmas cheer. If he wasn’t wearing nondescript black clothing and gun holsters, Akira would blame the irritated snarl gracing Goro’s face on this Michael Buble person singing some no homo anthem about his buddy Santa.

Akira just giggled in his best falsetto, preparing himself for whatever crossdressing shenanigans he had to pull for their mission tonight, and flipped his wig over his shoulder. Brief little moments of domestic bliss were nice after everything, even if most people wouldn’t get it. 

“Okay, ignore the murder then. We’re still living in a real life romcom whether you think my jokes are funny or not, since my entire life is a joke.” Another unimpressed squint as Goro kept his eyes on the road. The self-deprecation didn’t hit like it used to for either of them. Damn their efforts to rebuild Akira’s self-esteem. Those efforts were getting in the way of dark humor! “It’s December 24th, we’re on our way to crash a Christmas party, and we are romantic and comedic. We even took that don we now our gay apparel song to heart, come on!”

Goro snorted, ever the long-suffering, disgruntled man in the face of whatever the fuck Akira was doing. “That can be said for your outfit tonight, but I don’t recall a black turtleneck ever winning one of those ridiculous ugly Christmas sweater contests.”

“No, see, you’re just dressed like the gay goth cousin who sits at the kids’ table during family gatherings because he hates his homophobic relatives.” Akira knew this because he had once been the gay goth cousin who sat at kids’ tables during their rare family gatherings because he hated his homophobic relatives.

Goro looked from Akira, to the road, to their GPS. His brow furrowed and he bit his lip once he saw how little time was left until their arrival. The plan had been for Goro to park the car and follow behind closely, and Akira would do the actual infiltration with a fake identity and a fake adoration for being surrounded by the rich and pompous. The flashy getup was excessive, in Goro’s opinion, but plenty of Shido’s affiliates, and therefore Goro’s whether he liked them or not, were occupying this little gala. Of the two of them, Akira was less likely to be recognized, especially when dressed like this.

That didn’t mean Goro was fond of the idea whatsoever, but that was only one stressor among the many weighing them down tonight. As Goro parked the car, Akira finalized his appearances one more time, double-checking his heels were just short and thick enough that he could still run in them, and that not a hair looked out of place.

He only became aware of his nervous expression when Goro turned off the radio. Turning to face his partner in crime, he saw anxiety reflected back at him, and Akira gulped down a lump in his throat. “Hey,” Akira said, reaching over to grab Goro’s hand as it held the steering wheel in a vice grip. “I know this time of year is stressful for everyone, but I’m going to be okay–”

“Are you okay, though?” Goro cut him off, flexing his fingers before letting go of the wheel. He squeezed his eyelids shut and visibly fought to unclench his jaw. “You’ve spent the entire car ride cracking ridiculous jokes and making up your own lyrics to every damn orchestra cover that played on the radio, but if you’re trying to hide how nervous you are, you’re not doing a great job. I thought we talked about this.”

Akira winced. Keeping secrets hadn’t been his goal at all, but he couldn’t blame Goro for that train of thought. Old habits die hard, whether trauma was involved or otherwise. He flopped back against the headrest, shifting their hands so their fingers intertwined. Even with gloved hands, the grip grounded both of them. “I wasn’t doing it on purpose. I just know if I think too much about the worst case scenarios, I won’t be able to focus on anything else. I’m worried about you too, though. What’s wrong? Is it about splitting up?”

The telltale twitch of Goro’s hand was all the answer Akira needed. He stayed silent and gave Goro a moment to find his words, taking in his harrowed expression as Goro’s thumb brushed across the various scars all over Akira’s hand. Goro had always wielded words masterfully on television and even in battle, whether they were honeyed vinegar or vulgar curses, but words conveying his innermost feelings still didn’t come easily. Akira wasn’t good at sharing his burdens purposefully either just yet, but they were trying. 

They were both getting better about trust and honesty, but sometimes Akira worried parts of them would always be trapped in the past, terrified of losing one another, or maybe in some long-lost Palace there was Goro, kneeling on some bloody floor or panicking in a hotel room, or there was Akira, trapped in a diner or tied to a chair in that hellish basement or crawling across frozen earth in a desperate rush because he couldn’t let him die, not here, not again–

“You know you don’t have to do this, right?” Akechi’s voice broke Akira out of the spiral before it could properly start. Suddenly Akechi’s head gently bumped into the side of Akira’s, and his thumb rubbed circles against Akira’s knuckles. Right. It was December, in the present day, almost a full year after three no good, very bad days. They were alive. They were okay. “I’ll admit I’m not fond of splitting up. I…I can’t lose you again.” Okay, so maybe Akira wasn’t the only one spiraling over that possibility. “If you no longer wanted to mingle with Shido’s trash, I would gladly take our little getaway car and drive wherever you wish–”

“Nope, I’m still going,” Akira butted in. He wasn’t offended by Akechi’s offer, but he didn’t want to back down now, and he knew Akechi didn’t either. He could do this. It wasn’t like he had to kill a million people, all he had to do was break into some big wig’s computer with a flash drive and then get the hell out of there. Hopefully no one paid attention to him, once they got over the dress and heels. “I have a dagger and I’m not afraid to use it, and I have my earpiece just in case. You have a sword and multiple guns and an actual sniper rifle. Give the both of us some credit! I killed a god three Christmases ago. A little breaking and entering is what the kids call small potatoes.”

Akechi said nothing, but at the rate he was stressing, he would fracture every bone in Akira’s hand, induce heart murmurs faster than you could say four Five Hour Energy shots, and go bald by age twenty-three. Refusing to let the man who was essentially his husband lose all his hair, Akira indulged in their old favorite vice: deflecting and changing the subject. “Also, this isn’t the getaway car. Stop besmirching the good name of our dearly beloved Jokermobile–”

“It’s not a good name at all, Akira,” said Akechi as he forced himself to relax. He didn’t buy the facade, but Akira wasn’t trying to fool him. They both just needed to calm down before they did anything reckless…even if a heist was also reckless. “Your habit of naming inanimate objects is getting out of hand. This isn’t the Jokermobile, it’s a black 2016 Toyota Highlander, and you only named it that because you wanted to make rear-ending jokes.”

Well, it was a good thing they had only been rear-ended by an actual car once, then. Akira took full responsibility for that one, it was his fault for trying to drive with a broken leg. Pour one out for the fire hydrant, the greatest victim of that hit-and-run besides Akira’s psyche. “And yet you never thought of a better name. Checkmate.”

“You’re insufferable,” Akechi sighed. 

“I think you meant irresistible, honey,” said Akira.

“Oh, pardon me. I meant to say you’re irritating and irresponsible. My mistake.” 

Goro didn’t give Akira time to reply before he unbuckled his seatbelt and inspected his holsters. “Do you have the flashdrive ready to go?” Akira reached into a side pocket of his dress and showed Goro the flash drive, shoving it back inside once Goro nodded. “And your dagger?” He flipped his skirt completely to the side, exposing lacy black underwear on top of the dagger strapped to the thigh lacking a dress slit. Goro forcibly ignored that and interrogated him again like the bastard cop he once pretended to be. “And your earpiece?”

Wow, not even a verbal reaction to his underwear of choice? Bummer. Akira rolled his eyes and gently swept the wig away. Barely visible inside his ear was the earpiece, but it was in place just as planned. “Hey Y/N.” Pauli greets me as I walk in and Pia next to her passes me a cup of spiced wine. 

“Hey guys.” I answer, it’s the Christmas party of the team and I’m not sure if I like it or hate it. 

Don't get me wrong I love my team, but we decided to do Secret Santa this year and I’m not sure if the person I got will like my gift. 

I walk around, chat with some of my team mates, someone brought a guitar and at the end of the night everyone is sitting somewhere and sining along to Christmas songs.

We exchange the gifts at the end of the night, when it's almost midnight, I get a red hoodie with the words “Feel free the kiss me underneath the mistletoe” on it and a red Santa clause hat. 

They force me to wear both of it but when we’re finished with opening gifts I’m not the only one with a Christmas sweater. 

After that, most people start to leave and I get up too. 

“Hey, Feli can you bring me my jacket too?” Pia calls out as I realize Feli is following me into the back room where everyone left there stuff. 

“Sure.” she says and gives me a smile while walking past me. 

“I like your sweater.” Feli says as she grabs her jacket and I laugh. 

“Thanks.” I answer, stepping closer and waiting next to her as she searches for Pia’s jacket, clearly struggling to find it. 

“But I’m sure that I’m never gonna stand underneath a mistletoe so..” I trail off, her smile grows a little bit bigger as she looks up. 

“I wouldn't be so sure about that.” She says, I follow her look and see there's a mistletoe hanging above us. 

Like in some cheesy Christmas movie. 

“Who did this?” I ask and smile. 

“I’m pretty sure some of them.” she says, nodding towards the door to the other room. 

“Why would they do this?” 

“Because then I would finally have an excuse to kiss you.” Feli whispers, stepping closer. 

She takes my hand in hers and as she realizes that I’m not pulling back or trying to stop her, she knows, without me saying it, that she has my full consent. 

Her eyes flicker to my lips but within seconds they're back at my eyes as we both lean in. 

I close my eyes, and then finally, after what feels like hours, I feel her lips touching mine. 

Slowly, gentle and a little bit shy, she kisses me. 

I’m not sure how to describe what it feels like to kiss her, but its defiantly the best feeling in the world. 

It's like the silence around us explodes and a world of colors appears before my closed eyes. 

Like nothing else matters right now. 

Like we’re the only two people left on earth in this moment. 

Like every thought in my brain is cut out and replaced with her. 

With the feelings of her lips on mine. 

When we pull apart, gasping for air, I try to tell you what I feel right now, how I feel about her, my brain fails to string any words together, so I just lean my forehead against hers. 

Our hands are still clasped together, and honestly I don't want to let go of her. 

“Felicitas.” I say, because my brain is still not working, but also because I like the way her name sounds. 

I wrap my arm around her shoulders and pull her back, hoping that my kiss will tell her what I’m feeling. Because I’m not able to find the right words to say it. 

Her hand finds my cheek and as she softly rubs her thumb over my cheek bone I feel my knees getting weak. 

I never knew that my body would react that way to a kiss. 

“I’m....you’re....just wow.” Feli says as we brake apart, clearly not being able to form a normal sentence too. 

“Yeah.” I answer and she nods, knowing what I mean. 

“I have no idea what to say.” 

“What about, Y/N I’m completely and hopelessly in love with you since I meet you two years ago for the first time.” My first instinct is to take a step back, as I hear Pia’s voice, but Feli quickly wraps an arm around me like she wants to protect me from everything that could possible happen. 

Pia, Pauli, Jo and Merle are leaning in the door, each of them with a big smile on their face. 

And I’m pretty sure that one of them, put the mistletoe here. 

“You guys were this.” Feli says, like she exactly knows what I was thinking. 

“Yes, because I’m tired of hearing you talking every day about how much you’re in love with Y7N.” Pia says and adds a “Sorry buddy.”

“Yeah and I hate it when you get completely lost every time you notice Feli watching you when we have goalkeeper training.” Merle says. And yeah maybe she's right with the fact that my brain gets completely empty every time I see her watching us train. 

“Could you go away, so I can ask her to go out with me, without everyone listing, please?” Feli begs and somehow they go and leave us alone. 

“Y/N, would you-” 

“Yes.” I cut her off, a big smile on my face. 

“You don't even know what I was going to ask.” she laughs and I feel my cheeks getting red. 

“What were you going to ask?” 

“Date...I mean do you want to go on a date...with me.” she says, it’s really cute to see her so nervous. 

“I would love to.” 

The smile on her face gets bigger, I lover her smile. 

“We should go, before they come back and annoy us even more.” she suggests and I nod. 

“Hey, Feli.” I say as she's about to turn around. 

“Yes?” 

“You know, we’re still standing underneath a mistletoe.” 

She understands what I want and puts her hand in my neck, pulling me closer. 

We kiss again, but this time, there are more feelings involved. Her hand in my neck, pulling me against her, the feeling of her soft lips against mine. 

I know that I never want to stop kissing her, never ever in my life.

“Do you want a ride home?” she asks, as we brake apart, but only a couple of inches. 

“Yes.” 

We put on our coats and she gives me a smile, 

As we walk out of the room, our last four remaining team mates stand there, looking at us expectantly. 

“You guy are waiting for something?” Feli asks, having her usual coolness again. 

“Did you ask her?” Pia answers. 

“About her plans for Christmas? No not yet.” Feli answers, even though she knows what Pia meant. 

“Anyway, I’m going home, you wanna come too?” she adds. 

Pia nods and we go outside, towards the parking loot. 

The others following us, Merle pulls me aside. 

“Do you may wanna tell me anything?” 

“She asked me to go on a date with her.” I say. 

“What did you answer?”

“Yes, obviously.” 

Merle throws her fist in the air and I roll my eyes, but smile. I like that she's so happy for me. 

“Jo had the idea with the mistletoe.” Merle explains as were almost at the parking lot. 

“Yeah, we thought about something like that.” 

“Good luck on your date, tell me if you need anything.” Merle says as we stop at her car, she gives me a hug and I thank her. 

In the one year of playing together in Wolfsburg and two years in the National team, she became one of my best friends. And she is or was one of the only people who knew about my crush on Feli. 

Since Pia and Feli live together, they also drove her together. 

Pia gets into the backseat while I sit next to Feli in the passenger seat. 

As they drop my off at my apartment, Feli gets out of the car too and brings me to the door. 

“Good night, Y/N.” she says, softly grabbing my hand. 

“Good night, Felicitas.” I say and notice her smiling because normally no one uses her full name.

A Black and White Christmas

WARNING: Spoilers for those who have not yet watched the end of Series 2 of Tiger & Bunny 2.

The snow fell gently over Sternbild on Christmas Eve Night. Many stores closed after the last last-minute shopper got their goods, the restaurants were crowded with people who didn’t have time to cook for Christmas Dinner or have faiths where they don’t celebrate the holiday, and the streets were filled with people dressed like Santa Clause ringing bells for donation, and carolers singing songs about this night and the story behind it. Meanwhile, in many homes all over the city, families were getting together to watch holiday movies or specials, enjoy their great feasts, open gifts from friends and relatives, or just simply catch up with each other.

In the mansion of the Mayor of Sternbild, he was hosting a Holiday party, and many people were invited… Especially the heroes. However, only four of them were there tonight. Well, three considering what happened less than a year ago to Wild Tiger, now just Kotetsu T. Kaburagi.

At the buffet table, while most of the guests were just mingling, a young hero just stood next to it. He was wearing a black tux to reflect his hero name with a small red pancetta pinned to the side of his chest. He was wearing a black helmet with some kind of horns on it with yellow marks on its face. Under that mask was a young man with short brown hair, tan skin, eyes as brown as chocolate, and an expression that made him look hot-blooded and ready for action. Without the helmet, he was Subaru Sengoku. But with it, he was the Literal Man in Black, Mr. Black (formally Hello Goodbye back in his hometown of Panjourney).

Subaru just stared at a cup of eggnog in his hand which he only took a few sips of. He just stared off at the people in the room talking about things that didn’t interest him in the least. In fact, he didn’t even want to come to this party. But his manager would not take no for an answer and she made him come.

Subaru saw that not too far from him, Kotesu Kabruagi and his partner, Barnaby Brooks Jr., were chatting it up with some people. Subaru didn’t understand why Kotetsu was here. Last he checked, the hero formally known as Wild Tiger was no longer part of Hero TV. Although, he had heard that he started some company. Maybe that’s why he was there. But Subaru just didn’t care. He wished that he could be anywhere but here.

Suddenly, Kotetsu noticed Subaru looking upset and egged Barnaby on to go over to him. They arrived and Subaru tried to pretend that he didn’t notice them, but it was all in vain.

“Is something that matter, Subaru?” asked Kotetsu.

“What’s it to you?” Subaru replied with a tough-sounding tone.

“We were just asking,” said Barnaby. “You don’t have to be rude.”

“Sorry.”

“It’s just,” said Kotetsu, trying to sound delicate about this. “It’s just that, you look like you really don’t want to be here.”

“Me? Not wanting to be at a luxurious party filled with rich people who could further make Jungle a greater sponsor than Apollon Media and hearing how great Mr. Black and He Is Thomas is that they would soon becoming the next Tiger & Bunny?” They could tell Subaru was being sarcastic.

“Is that all,” said Kotetsu, smiling at how silly the young hero was acting.

Finally, Subaru sighed in defeat.

“Alright, you caught me,” he said, looking down. “I really don’t want to be here. I was hoping I could go back to Panjourney to spend the Holidays with my family and friends since I didn’t get to do it last year because of the twins. But, you know Carlotta, she wasn’t going to listen to what I have to say.”

“That’s rough,” said Barnaby.

“And I thought Lloyds was a nightmare,” Kotetsu whispered to himself.

“Did you tell them you weren’t coming?”

“I did,” answered Subaru. “I thought they would be very sad. But you know what they said. “You go to that party. The city needs Mr. Black more than we need Hello Goodbye. You let the other heroes down. Especially your partner.””

“Well it’s good they understand,” said Kotetsu.

“Yeah… But I could tell they were unhappy that I wasn’t coming.”

“Maybe you could at least convince your bosses to give you New Years off,” suggested Barnaby.

“I could try,” said Subaru. “But I miss spending the Holidays in Panjourney.”

“What do you normally do there for Christmas?” asked Kotetsu.

“Mostly, me and my parents would just exchange gifts. My father and I would just watch whatever’s good on TV while my mother cooked her famous caramel coated turkey.”

“She actually covered it in caramel?”

“You’d be surprised how well caramel goes with anything. Sometime, I would visit my fellow heroes and see what they are doing. I even visit Rodrigo and join in on his Noche Buena plans, even though he ends up yelling at me to go away.”

“That sounds like fun,” said Barnaby, a bit interested.

“Yeah. It was. But now that I’m here, I’m not sure if I’ll ever get to do those things again.”

“Don’t give up,” assured Kotetsu. “I’m sure they’ll let you go next year.”

“… If you say so. But what about you, Ti- Ugh, I got to stop that. Kotetsu?”

“You can still call me Wild Tiger if you like. Even I still feel like going by it.”

“Well… What about you, Tiger? Now that you’re no longer a hero, should you be back in Oriental Town spending the Holidays with your family?”

“Well, I thought about it. I even told my mother, my daughter, and brother that I was coming. You know what they said?”

“What?”

“Kaede said, “You stay in Sternbil, Dad. The Wild Tiger: Anything Consultation Office only just started.” Then Moramasa said, “She’s right, you need all the business partners you can get and not just Barnaby to really take off.” Then my mom said, “You go to that party and do what you can. We are so proud of you.””

“That’s some supportive family.”

“And besides,” said Barnaby with a small laugh. “Kaede wants an autographed poster of me for Christmas. As if she doesn’t already have enough.”

“I see…” Subaru looks up a bit. Though his face was still covered, they could tell what he was feeling right now. “… Thanks.”

“You’re welcome,” said Kotetsu, happy along with Barnaby. “Besides, it turns out you’re not the only one.”

“What do you mean?”

“Your partner’s also looking a bit down.”

“Really? I mean, that’s no surprise, but what happened?”

“He’s been hanging out in the hall by himself just a little after the party started,” said Barnaby.

“You should go talk to him,” said Kotetsu. “I think he could use some good cheer.”

“Okay. I’ll see you guys later for the gift exchange.”

“Good luck,” Kotetsu and Barnaby said in unison.

With that, Subaru goes to the hall.

In the hall, Subaru found his partner. He was dressed in a white tux and had a white helmet which also had horns on it with something that looked like a halo. But under it was a young man who spent almost his whole life in pain and loneliness. His hair was as silver as moonlight, his eyes as green as emeralds, and a blank expression that made him look like he didn’t care about anything. His name was Thomas Taurus, but to the world that watched Hero TV, He Is Thomas (or HIT for short.)

Thomas was just staring at a glass of punch.

“Are you going to drink that anytime soon?” joked Subaru, getting Thomas’s attention.

“What about you?” he said back, pointing at the eggnog in Subaru’s hand.

“I was gonna finish it.”

Subaru removes his helmet, shaking his hair which had gone a bit wet with sweat from wearing his helmet for too long. Then, he takes one big gulp of his drink and lets out a sigh.

“That was good,” he said.

“Was it that good?” asked Thomas who never had eggnog before (mainly because he never thought of trying it).

“… No, not really. Guess I should have gone for the juice.”

“That’s alright, I’m not much up for drinking right now, anyway.”

Thomas puts his drink down on a nearby table and removes his helmet too, showing that his hair was also sweaty from wearing it for too long. He brushes his finger through his hair… Subaru felt his heart suddenly skip a beat.

“So,” said Subaru, trying hard now feeling embarrassed. “What are you doing here? The party’s in the main hall.”

“I was never really one for parties,” said Thomas, sounding as uncaring as possible. “Not even on Christmas.”

“Really? Is this because of how we spent Christmas last year, you should be complaining to those twins.”

“It’s not that. It’s… Even before that.”

Subaru was at a loss for words for a moment. He almost forgot how all of Thomas’s past Christmases must have been since his parents died and his sister, Ruby, was away. How lonely it must have been for him.

“I’m sorry,” said Subaru. “I guess I shouldn’t be prying.”

“It’s alright,” assured Thomas. “It wasn’t really your fault. I should have expected this when my NEXT powers first appeared. They wanted to take Ruby, but leave me behind.”

“But that’s different now. By the way, isn’t Ruby here? Now that you two found each other and Carlotta gave her a job with Jungle as an intern, she should be here.”

“Yes, she should. But the boss and Carlotta said that interns don’t get to go to parties like this… Besides, she really wanted to spend this Christmas with our dads. I wanted to go too, but Carlotta said I had to go to this party.”

“I guess she got to you, too, huh?”

“Yes. But Ruby wasn’t upset. She understood why I had to stay here and said she would try to get our dads to come over here for New Years. I wonder if she’ll do it. These men didn’t want to adopt me because I’m a NEXT. But Ruby managed to change their minds and now they have officially adopted me.”

“That’s great.”

“But, I really did want to go to Pleaides to spend the Holidays with her. We’ve been apart for so long… I don’t even remember what Christmas was like back when our parents were alive.”

“I’m…” Subaru was having a hard time finding the words.

“But I should trust her. We’ve only ever had each other to trust since we lost our parents. We still do.”

Subaru only thought about how sad Thomas was that Ruby went away for the Holidays. But what could he say? … But he could try something. So… Subaru took Thomas by the hand.

The moment their hands touched, Thomas suddenly felt something in the pit of his stomach. Was it a stomach ache? He hasn’t eaten anything since lunch. Gas? No, it couldn’t be that. Finally, after many more guesses, Thomas concluded that there was only one thing that could be going on… Butterflies. There were butterflies in his stomach. Thomas had never really had a feeling like this before. However, he did have some idea, ever since that day after they defeated L.L. Audun and Gregory Sunshine when Subaru invited him over for a lasagna dinner. He often wondered if Subaru ever felt the same way.

Subaru did. He’s had crushes on girls before, but this was uncharted territory. He always thought it would be with Rodrigo, but they would only be just friends. Thomas… Thomas is probably the first guy Subaru was attracted to. He had helped him find his sister. That showed what a good partner he is… But can they really be more than that? And Thomas did help Subaru realize that even heroes need someone to balance out someone as hot-blooded as Subaru is. Plus, he will never forget how Thomas saved him during that fight with Audun. That showed Subaru that he cares about his partner.

“Thomas,” said Subaru. He was silent for a moment. Then he smiled. “I may not change what happened then. All I can do is help you now and maybe help in the future. That’s all I can do.”

“Subaru,” said Thomas. He found himself smiling, too. Something he hardly ever does with his partner. “I feel the same. You want to stop crime when it happens, I want the same thing. It also means saving people. I’ll help you with that, too.”

“I know. And… I’m thankful for that. I just want us to find something to make sure we are still together in the future.”

“I want that, too. Now that I’ve realized it, you’re more than just my partner, or my friend, or even a brother. You’re… You’re much more than that.”

“You’re more than that to me, too.”

Subaru holds on to Thomas’s hands even tighter. Thomas couldn’t help but hold on tight, too. Suddenly, Thomas felt his powers activate as some of the things around them started to hover in the air. Themselves included. Subaru formed a barrier platform for them to stand on to keep them stable. They stopped going any higher the moment Thomas realized what was going on. When they did, they noticed something hanging just above them… A branch of mistletoe.

“They say that eating mistletoe can be deadly,” said Subaru.

“But kiss under it can be even more deadly,” said Thomas.

“But only if you don’t know about the person you’re kissing.”

“Or if you don’t know the person you are.”

Subaru and Thomas suddenly found themselves leaning close to each other. They leaned until their bodies were completely pressed against each other, feeling the warmth of their chests and the wild beating of their hearts. Then, the two young men wrapped themselves in each other arms as happiness overtook their expressions. They could feel their breaths on each other’s necks as their faces started to close in. Their eyes begin to close as they drew closer and closer together. Then, without any warning needed… their lips connected. A great heat passed through the two heroes’ bodies. At first, it burned and hurt them. But after a second, it turned into a good feeling as they began to hear music only they could hear while everyone at the party could only hear the orchestra playing Christmas songs. A feeling of joy, of laughter, of hope, of happiness, of pleasure, of understanding, and… of love. It was a feeling that made them wish that this moment would not end. Not now. Not ever.

Subaru and Thomas then drew away from their kiss, still smiling and holding each other in their arms as they began to descend back to the floor. As they landed and Subaru’s barrier deactivated, they were still holding each other. Then, they looked to the entrance of the party… where Kotetsu and Barnaby were standing with satisfied smiles on their faces. The two men drew back from each other, but still held one hand on the other’s.

“Did you,” began Subaru. “Did you see that?”

“See what?” said Kotetsu, still smiling.

Subaru and Thomas smiled, their faces still red, but they were happy.

“I think we should get back to the party,” said Thomas, putting his helmet back on.

“Yeah,” agreed Subaru, also putting his helmet back on.

They make their way back to the party.

“Hey, Thomas,” said Subaru. “If you’re not doing anything later, wanna come to my place? I think I can make another lasagna if you like.

Thomas smiled under his helmet.

“I wouldn’t miss it for the world,” he said. “And… would you mind if I stayed the night?”

Subaru also smiled.

“Nothing would make me happier,” he replied.

Back with Kotetsu and Barnaby, they looked up at where the mistletoe was hanging.

“I don’t remember that mistletoe hanging up there when we were coming in,” said Kotetsu.

Barnaby laughed a bit.

“I may have used my powers to leap up there and put it up,” he said.

The two men laughed.

“You know, Bunny,” said Kotetsu, looking over at the party where Subaru and Thomas were now talking together with other people. “I think those two will be alright.”

“They will,” agreed Barnaby. “As long as they trust their partners and stay by each other’s side, they can get through anything.”

“Just like us.”

The former hero duo places an arm on the other. Then, they look up to the mistletoe.

“Think we should take that down?” asked Kotetsu.

“An hour hasn’t passed yet,” said Barnaby. “I’ll take it down later before anyone sees. But I wonder what we’ll do in-“

Kotetsu already answers Barnaby’s question with a light peck on his cheek. The two men smiled at each other and embraced each other in a long and heartfelt kiss. They could not help but think that Tomoe, Mr. and Mrs. Brooks, and Samantha were looking down from Heaven and were smiling at how happy the older hero and the younger hero were… As long as they were together.

They rejoin the party as well. This would be a night they the four heroes would never forget. It will be with them for all eternity.

We still keep the tradition going as much as we can, but we don't mind picking a day or doing both days and seeing the same people twice. As we know, by the end of the story, the Grinch has had a change of heart. His heart grows three sizes as he realizes that Christmas isn’t about the gifts, the toys, the food, or even the decorations. Dr. Suess leaves it up to the readers to decide what Christmas means for them, but for the Who’s, it seems as if it was simply about being together with those they loved. They still had joy in their hearts even after all of their things were taken from them. They still held hands and sang with joyous song! I know that not many of us can say that we would do the same. In fact, the Grinch returned with all of their Christmas gifts, decorations, and their feast. When he did, they didn’t do what most of us would do. They didn’t get angry with him and banish him back up the mountain. No. They invited him into their homes for the Christmas feast. As Pastor Chad pointed out, they even gave him the seat of honor and the highest praise by offering for him to carve the roast beast. That’s a level of forgiveness and inclusion that most of us, myself included, simply can’t muster when someone has wronged us. Let alone wronged our entire family. Isn’t that what God said to do though?
