Bradley loved Charley.
He always had.
He loved her when he heard Mav telling his mom about a baby that showed up on his front doorstep whose mother had claimed she was his and she was his responsibility.
He loved her when he was forced to go to her gymnastics tournaments and she was forced to go to his soccer games.
He loved her when she showed up with Maverick to send him off to college.
He loved her when they'd celebrate their birthdays at the Hard Deck.
He loved her when she hugged him at his mothers funeral.
And he loved her when he begrudgingly picked up the phone call from Maverick to congratulate him on finally getting into the Naval Academy and he heard her say "congratulations on getting into the Academy, Bradley!" in the background.
But Bradley fell in love with Charley.
He fell in love with her when he walked into the Hard Deck and saw her working at the bar.
He fell in love with her when she said yes and went on a date with him.
He fell in love with him when he realized he may never see her again after that mission.
He fell in love with her when he first told her he was in love with her and she said it back.
He fell in love with her when he was reunited with her after that mission.
He fell in love with her when she glued him and her father back together and helped resolve their issues.
He fell in love with her when they moved in together and adopted a rescue cat and named her Margot.
He fell in love with her every time she was waiting for him at base after a mission.
He fell in love with her when she told him she was pregnant, and he fell deeper when she tearfully accepted his marriage proposal that same night.
He fell in love with her when she gave birth to their firstborn, their daughter named Juliette.
He fell in love with her when she took his last name in front of all of their loved ones.
He falls in love with her everyday.
Bradley loves Charley.
And he always will.

Take My Breath Away Pt. 1: Rooster x F! Reader
Tumblr media
Summary: You live in California close to the Naval Air Station Miramar. You frequent the bar where the pilots drink and often make friends with them. It’s nothing to run home about until you have a one-night stand with one Brandley “Rooster” Bradshaw. This wouldn’t usually mean much, but since you had been friends with all of his “coworkers” things could get a little awkward
Word Count: 1927
Warnings: implied sexual activity, smooching, nudity, casual flirting. Also not my gif.
A/N: I want to make this into a three-part series so stay tuned. pt. 2 will be a lot more smutty
You sat beside Hangman and Phoenix listening to them bicker with their beers in hand. You on the other hand were on your third margarita. You took another sip as Phoenix finally turned toward you.
“You’re a civilian, do you think that Navy guys get more girls?” She questioned, clearly trying to prove Hangman wrong.
“It’s personal preference but I don’t prefer them.” You answered playfully.
Hangman looked over at you as if you had said something preposterous. He put down his beer, hard, and leaned over Phoenix to get closer to you. “You don’t prefer them?” he shouted.
“No, I don’t.” You began to smile, unable to take yourself seriously. It was true, you were lying. Navy guys especially aviators make you feel as though you had been shot through the heart with one of their missiles. They were always fit and somehow made their arrogant attitude so attractive. The worst part about your lie was that Hangman had hard evidence that would immediately disprove your claim.
The previous weekend you had all been in the bar and you had been a little tipsy. In front of most of the aviators, you danced on him, a little less than innocently, and even sat on his lap when he was playing the piano. This wouldn’t be that big of an issue if you didn’t sleep with him later that night. It wasn’t sneaky, you were sure Hangman had seen the two of you leave together but still, you decided to lie.
“You guys are too cocky, what girl would be into that.” You continued.
Hangman was completely baffled. He knew what he saw and he could vividly remember the way you looked at him and his friends the first night you met. “You’re really going to sit in front of me and say you don’t prefer aviators?” he asked.
You didn’t waste a second. “I thought we were talking about the Navy, not the Airforce.” It was your favorite to pretend you had no clue what your new group of friends did for a living.
Phoenix couldn’t help the burst of laughter that came out of her as Hangman sat back in his chair. You gave the woman next to you a quick wink, before taking another sip of your drink.
Hangman sat silently for a moment as if he were trying to come up with something to say that could put you in your place without completely exposing something he didn’t know to be fully true. He opened his mouth to speak but quickly closed it as his eyes trailed somewhere behind you, a slick grin appearing on his lips.
Your smile immediately faded as you turned to see what he was looking at. Your heart dropped. Rooster was walking into the bar with his Hawaiin shirt fully unbuttoned, showing his white t-shirt that stretched perfectly over his chest. For a moment you can’t take your eyes off of him, flashing back to the half-drunk sex the two of you had, but you quickly pulled your eyes away when Hangman’s voice began to ring in your ears.
“Roos, come over here and help me prove a point.” He shouted.
Rooster made his way to your table and looked toward Hangman with complete disinterest. When he stopped walking his stomach was inches away from your face. You looked away, physically restraining the smile that so badly wanted to expose how happy you were to smell his cologne.
“She says she’s not into Navy guys.” Hangman interrupted your gawking, motioning in your direction.
Rooster took a step back so that he was able to get a better look at you. You watched as his eyes took their time analyzing every available inch of you. His gaze was practically palpable. He could tell you had a few drinks in you and yet somehow you seemed extremely calculated. You gave him a quick glance through your lashes before turning back toward Phoenix and Hangman.
“She likes what she likes.” Rooster shrugged and you couldn’t help the smile that his words provoked.
“See, it’s not that crazy of a concept,” you shouted over to Hangman. “You guys are too cocky anyway.”
This made Rooster perk up. “That works on some women,” he said, raising his brow.
“Well, not me.”
You wanted to burst out into laughter. It had been fun pretending you weren’t attracted to the men around you, but it was becoming harder to keep yourself from making some sort of suggestive joke about the man across from you. He was reading you like a book and though it seemed like only you could tell, you were sure someone would catch on eventually.
The four of you sat and debated for a while longer before Hangman finally gave up and challenged Pheonix to a game of pool. She agreed, leaving you and Rooster alone at the table.
“I guess I really did get lucky.” He immediately began to joke.
You looked over at him, your eyelids feeling heavy as you scanned his features. “Oh, you have no idea.” You said in a clearly exaggerated tone.
Rooster let out a small chuckle before scanning the room to make sure no one important was within earshot. “About the other night, I had fun but I don’t want to give you false hope.” he began.
Without fully realizing it you rolled your eyes. Of course, he would assume you were looking for something serious. “Listen, Bradley, I’m a grown woman. I know what happened was a one-time thing, you don’t have to worry about me.” You replied.
You could see the tension leave his shoulders as he let out a sigh of relief. It wasn’t often that two people so quickly understood one another and he appreciated that about you. The first night you two met you were dancing on tables and singing loud enough to be heard outside of the bar. You weren’t always so outgoing but with a couple of drinks in you, there was no telling what you would do. From the moment you laid eyes on each other, you both knew what was to be expected of the night. It took him two drinks to approach you and four more to ask you if you wanted to go somewhere more private. It was fun and a much-needed release for both of you.
Now, as the two of you sat drinking and laughing you realized there was something different about him. Sure he had that same arrogance that seemed to come with all aviators, but he also had an unidentifiable charm about him. He was attractive, there was no doubt about that, but he was also adorable and filled with a light you hadn’t seen before. As you both continued to drink you found it harder to keep all of this information to yourself.
Eventually, the group you had arrived with was completely gone. Both you and Rooster looked around the bar only to realize the entire bar was empty besides the two of you. A string of giggles filled the air as you paid off your tab and followed Rooster toward the beach.
Holding your shoes in your hand you stumbled haphazardly on the sand. You felt an arm wrap around your waist and looked up to see Rooster saying something about keeping you on your feet. He was completely unaware that it wasn’t the alcohol making your knees weak, it was him.
You had lived near the base most of your adult life and never had you met someone like him. He was somewhat old-fashioned, but you liked that about him. You liked the way he made you feel safe without suffocation and how nonchalantly he could hold you in his arms. You didn’t want anything serious, but you would be lying if you said you didn’t want him back in your bed.
“I have an idea.” You said, taking a step away from him and turning toward the water.
Your sudden excitement caught him off guard but he was curious to hear what you had to say. “What?” He asked.
“We should go skinny dipping.”
Rooster immediately began to shake his head, but you were already taking off your pants.
“I really don’t think that’s a good idea.” He frowned.
“Oh come on. It’s late no one’s gonna come out here.” You smiled while continuing to strip.
“Exactly, what if you drown or something?”
“Then you’ll save me. Don’t be such a pussy.” And with that, you were completely naked and running into the water.
Rooster stared at you for a moment before shaking his head. “Don’t be such a pussy Roos.” he egged himself on.
Soon you were both in the ocean. You had swam to a point where the water met your hips, using your forearms to cover your chest. “It’s a little colder than I expected.” Rooster smiled awkwardly, finally catching up to you.
You looked down where the water met his waist, shamelessly examining his v-line. Without saying a word you submerged yourself underwater. You didn’t open your eyes but you could tell he was shifting in the water. When you reemerged you were closer to him than you originally thought. The cold water had sobered you up a little and you felt bad for invading his space. You pushed your hair out of your face and could immediately tell he had taken a peek at your bare chest.
“You know, I think we could be really good friends.” You grinned, letting your arms rest on your sides. You could tell that his face was turning red from the glare of moonlight.
“I thought we already were.” He replied.
You took another step toward him. “I think we could be closer.”
Rooster looked down at you, you’re pupils completely blown. At that moment he knew there was no going back. The two of you had crossed a line and he was willing to figure out what was waiting on the other side. He reached out to brush a piece of wet hair off of your shoulder, leaving his hand so that his thumb was grazing your neck.
“I don’t know if you’re ready for that.” He smirked, finally matching your mood.
You wasted no time before wrapping your arms around him and connecting your lips to his. Rooster pulled you in closer by the waist, making sure that you could feel him on you. Your kisses were sloppy but somehow completely gratifying. You felt his hand trail down your back, sending shivers down your spine. He grabbed your ass and lifted you into the air.
You let out a soft moan before screeching as both you and Rooster fell into the water. When you emerged out of the water you were hysterically laughing as he tried to catch his breath. “You almost just killed me!” He shouted.
You couldn’t even answer you were laughing so hard, but you immediately stopped as you felt water splash onto your face. You turned your head to see Rooster with a massive grin on his face. You splashed him back and before long you were both a laughing wet mess.
You went to push him but he grabbed onto your wrists, bringing you closer to him. “I think you’re giving me a lot of false hope right now.” you teased.
“And I thought I wasn’t your type.” He replied, moving his thumb over your bottom lip. You took in a deep breath as he pulled you in again.
“Maybe we both spoke a little too soon.”

There was no more need for preparation or training; the mission was now. Time had run out. Captain Mitchell stood in front of the naval aviators; he was about to make his selection. A majority of the aviators wore dreadful expressions as there wasn't much evidence that backed the success of the mission.
"It's been an honor flying with you. Each of you represents the best of the best. This is a very specific mission, and my choices are a reflection of that and nothing else," Captain Mitchell addressed the group. Emerson couldn't stop the roll of her eyes at the lies that projected out of her father's mouth.
Admiral Simpson stood beside Maverick, "Choose your two foxtrot teams."
"Payback and Fanboy. Phoenix and Bob," he answered.
"Choose your wingman."
Maverick's eyes scanned the group in front of him. A proud smile sat on Hangman's face while Rooster avoided the captain's gaze altogether. His eyes landed on Raven's. She sent him a piercing stare; one that sent shivers down his spine. She was rightfully angry at him, yet it still didn't change his mind. He didn't care how upset Emerson was just as long as she was safe. "Rooster."
"The rest of you will stand by on the carrier for any reserve role that's required. Dismissed."
Emerson approached Phoenix, "Give 'em hell for me?"
Phoenix smiled softly at the woman and pulled her into a tight hug, "You know it, Rae."
Emerson pulled away and turned to Bob. He gave her a cheerful smile that did nothing but warm Emerson's raging heart. She returned the smile, "Make us proud, Bob. And when you get back, the first round is on me."
A blush crept up on the pilot's cheeks, "Yes ma'am."
———
The aviators stood dispersed on the flight deck of the aircraft carrier. Those on the mission team were checking over their respective planes before take-off. Emerson found Bradley beside his plane.
"Hey, I was about to come find—" Emerson took his face in her hands and kissed him tenderly, cutting off his sentence. "I love you," she confessed.
There was a twinkle in Bradley's eyes like he had been waiting his entire life to hear those three words from Emerson, and of course, she beat him to saying it. "I lo—"
She stopped him again, "Don't say it till you come back."
Maverick approached the two pilots, and Emerson turned to leave. She had no intention of listening to whatever sorry excuse he had to say this time.
Maverick sighed, "She's still mad at me?"
"Well sir, you did pull her from the mission. And you and I both know she's the best dogfighter here. We need her."
Maverick watched Emerson's retreating figure, "And I need her alive." He left Bradley to care for his plane and went to his own. The rest of the pilots were ready and standing by for orders from Mission Control.
"Dagger 1, up and ready," Maverick announced over the comms.
"Dagger Spare, up and ready," Hangman added.
"Dagger 4, up and ready."
"Dagger 3, up and ready."
"Dagger 2, up and ready," Rooster declared.
"Dagger Alternate, up and ready," Emerson finished.
Maverick's F-18 took off from the carrier and the three others followed closely behind him. As they flew over the ocean, Maverick contacted Comanche which gave the pilots the 'go-ahead' to descend below the radar.
"Comanche. Picture is clean. Decision is yours."
"Dagger attack," Maverick ordered.
The three other daggers fell into position behind Maverick's lead F-18. Above them, the Tomahawk missiles soared to their final destination at the enemy airfield. They were sent in hopes of reducing the risk of running into enemy aircraft on the return flight. Approaching the target, the pilots set their timers; it was go time.
The flight through the canyon was similar to the course of their training simulation, yet this was not the California desert. The terrain around them was littered with snow and forest. And in this reality, the SAMs above the canyon were real and lethal.
Rooster noticed the several SAMs sites scattered above him. He swallowed hard as his heart beat rapidly. His hand trembled around his center flight stick. Would one of those SAMS be his demise? His mind was clouded with thoughts of his parents and Emerson. What if he didn't return to Emerson? What if he never got to tell her how he felt? Distracted by his fears, Rooster fell behind in speed.
He was reminded of a phrase that Emerson told him during their flight training in the academy: 'You think up there, and you're dead.' Rooster couldn't let the past or his fears hold him back any longer. He took a deep breath, "Talk to me, Dad." Gaining new confidence, he increased his speed exponentially, leaving Payback and Fanboy in his dust.
Maverick, Phoenix, and Bob approached the target. Finding missile-lock, Bob shouted the coordinates into his headset. It was a hit; they accomplished miracle number one of the mission. Now Rooster, Payback, and Fanboy needed to accomplish miracle number two.
"I can't find missile-lock! Deadeye! Deadeye!" Fanboy called.
"I'm dropping blind. Bombs away," Rooster answered. Miraculously, Rooster hit bullseye. Below him, the ground imploded, destroying the uranium plant. Now, the pilots faced the G-force of Coffin Corner and the SAMs that awaited them in enemy airspace.
As the four daggers breached enemy airspace, the SAMS immediately targeted their F-18s. The shrill of their missile-lock warning systems captivated their senses. Left and right, missiles shot at the four planes. Using their own missiles and flares, the team tried to maneuver around the SAMs. Explosions occurred in every direction; it was utter chaos.
"Shit! I'm out of flares," Rooster yelled. The beep of his radar increased rapidly, alerting the pilot of his quickly approaching doom. He braced for impact, but it never came. Maverick flew straight into the course of the missile, intercepting it of its intended target.
"Dagger 1, hit!" Bellowed across the carrier's airwaves.
"Dad!" Emerson cried out.
"Dagger Spare, requesting take off," Hangman asked Mission Control.
"Dagger Spare, take off denied." Admiral Simpson even grounded the search and rescue helicopters at the risk of losing more men.
Emerson slammed her fist against the dash of her plane. She couldn't just let her father die out there. "Fuck it." She closed the canopy of her plane. "Dagger Alternate, up and ready."
"Dagger Alternate, take off is denied. Stand down," Mission Control reminded.
"I wasn't asking. I was telling," she said, moving her plane onto the runway.
Admiral Simpson's voice spoke through her headset, "Raven, don't you dare. I will have your ass court-martialed!"
"You can court-martial me when I bring my dad home, sir."
"Your da— What?"
The flight deck crew watched as Emerson's F-18 ascended into the sky. They knew better than to try and stop the determined woman.

Communal bar The Hard Deck is crowded as usual, especially since summer heat and shoreline breezes fill surrounding air once more. Voices chat in all directions and glasses clank as members of this naval base enjoy much-needed downtime.
“Uh-oh.” Smiling for a moment, Jake “Hangman” Seresin fixes his posture and holds the pool cue towards his uniformed chest before eyeing Coyote across this green felt table.
“What?” Javy "Coyote" Machado squints, folding both arms while looking towards his amused comrade in one way or another. One vintage jukebox plays decades-old music as Javy waits for Jake to keep talking.
“Turn around.” Jake whispers to Jav, trying not to weirdly catch the attention of one new young woman who’s sitting up front and alone at the bar.
Javy slowly turns on the heels of his standard-issue shoes and glances over one shoulder.
Who is that? He thinks while facing someone new, not wanting to smile quickly and make her feel uncomfortable.
From this angle, the new young woman is sitting on one bar stool and drinking from one of the classic glass soda. She definitely plans on driving home tonight. Even over the sound of thundering music, Javy can hear the way she laughs. The woman  chuckles out loud, humored by something that one of the other patrons said.
“Make a move.” Jake encourages Jav after ending their game of pool and winks before shaking hands, heading in the opposite direction.
_______
Javy knows better than to interrupt the woman's conversation at this point, so he waits until after she’s paid a bill and hops off that front stool. By now, she’s been greeting other people for only a few minutes.
“Excuse me?” Javy asks in a kind way, still not mean or weird enough to start flirting like some kind of jerk. As skilled as he is while airborne, respect always matters.
“Oh, sorry.” The woman gasps towards Jay after recycling another glass bottle of soda. “Did you say something? I haven’t been here in years and it’s still really loud, yknow?”
“Yeah, I understand. I was just asking, what’s your name?” Javy sounds louder than before, but remembers to keep his distance from this stranger.
“Victoria.” Offering to shake hands with him, Victoria smiles once more. Javy almost buckles, entranced because she’s so pretty.
“Javy.” Jav welcomes that handshake from Victoria without fail, overjoyed from within.
________
Jav speaks with Tori until closing, or at least Jake regrettably interferes. Staying out a little too late at night wouldn’t make training with Maverick any easier the next day.
“How did it go?” Jake asks his best friend this question later that night before lights must go out for everyone on the base.
“Victoria’s great. We had a nice conversation.” Javy speaks to the bottom bunk without facing Jake, smiling anyhow.
“Do you plan on seeing Victoria again this weekend or was talking to her so good that I need to break out my tuxedo for the wedding?” Seresin jokes, laughing without being too loud of course.
“Shut up, man.” Javy shuts his eyes and ignores Jake, planning to sleep before training tomorrow.
***
By that following weekend, The Hard Deck is once again crowded with new recruits and veterans.
Victoria jokingly rolls both eyes as soon as Natasha “Phoenix” Trace opens the front door and walks alongside her towards that main bar.
“What’s this I hear about you coming back. Too many rumors.” Natasha asks, tilting her head while facing Tori. Both music and voices still clustering
“Don’t get your hopes up, Phe. I’m not flying again anytime soon.” Tori offers the truth and takes another drink of her soda.
“Why not?” Phoenix whispers, almost sounding gentle despite her usual resolve in one way or another.
At that same moment, Tori finishes drinking soda and reaches out, carefully toying with dog tags clasped around her neck.
“It’s complicated.” Tori answers.
_________
“Your girl just snatched the pool cue, Jav.” Jake almost rattles both of Javy’s shoulders while after finishing his own drink that night. Tori is playing against Natasha for the sake of a good time. Everyone watches, down for this matchup.
By the time Jake utters acknowledges  Victoria’s presence for Jav, even Fanboy and Rooster look on, huddled at this crossway table and holding invisible popcorn.
Back and forth. Back and forth. Spectators of this bar nearly howl in the name of surprise and trick move as Natasha and Tori keep up their own comradery.
Tori wins, but shakes hands with Natasha and grins through sportsmanship just before ending this game.
Cheering echoes almost immediately and everyone seems impressed. Too many other people ask questions, but Victoria eyes Javy across the bar, smiling once more.
“Saw that.” Javy jokes with Tori when Jake is out of the way. He’s already dealt with enough teasing from Seresin by now.
“Just wanted to blow off steam with an old friend. Now let's get out of here before Penny kicks everybody out.” Tori speaks up through laughter.
“We’ve got about two more hours left until close, actually.” Javy smiles back, gently correcting Tori as he looks down at his watch.
“Is that right?” Victoria slyly bites her lip for a moment, but doesn’t close too much space between herself and Javy.
“Yes, Ma’am.” Javy catches on, but still knows better than to really act the way that he wants to.
“What should we do now?” Victoria smirks, but before Javy can respond, Rooster slides near the piano and jokingly cracks his knuckles.
“Oh no! Rooster’s already played Great Balls of Fire for everybody at least three times in the past week.” Javy rolls both eyes while facing Tori, apologizing without other words.
Moments later, Rooster Bradshaw then chimes the opening chords of one classic ballad entitled “Sweet Love” by Anita Baker.
“Oh, shit!” Victoria drops her jaw and makes another comment while looking at Javy for now. “That was my parent’s wedding song.”
“That’s really nice.” Javy remarks. Meanwhile, quite a few nostalgic veterans sing along with Rooster as the young graduate uses his lower register to croon every romantic lyric.
Even still, Jake, a small town kid through and through, belts during the Quiet Storm bridge with this raspy tone out of nowhere, striking attention from everyone.
“What?” Both Javy and Victoria gasp, almost shouting in the name of excitement and encouragement as Jake sings along. To Javy, such a surprise moved from his best friend.
When Rooster finally stops playing the song, Jake can only smirk. He then points towards Javy and gestures for him to walk forward with Victoria.
“If you two don’t stop playing…” Jakes reveals his Southern drawls, trailing off his words and pointing between Javy or Victoria before walking away. Hangman won’t even explain where the hell his bombshell voice came from.
“Jake’s got a point.” Victoria grins for a moment, but speaks once more, leaving Javy to ponder with his own thoughts.
Damn. Laughing, Javy considers the truth. He can’t refuse it anymore.

Tom Cruise Movie Ranking
1. Top Gun: Maverick
Tom Cruise coming back after three decades to release a Top Gun sequel? If you told me that two years ago, the first thing I would’ve said would be no way. The second thing? That it can’t be any good. But Top Gun: Maverick is a surprisingly well-thought-out impactful action movie which is redefining the way we have thought about modern-day movies and forcefully grounding said action. Tom Cruise’s and Miles Teller’s performance was a perfect balance between the last Top Gun and the new one, bringing in fresh ideas and creating impact within the story. All of the cast brought a new perspective, no pandering was done to the audience, who were treated with a respect that has been unheard of in the movie industry. The fact that Tom Cruise and the cast worked so hard to give something authentic is refreshing.  With real G’s and real F-18s you could feel the love and hard work not only put in by Tom Cruise but by the rest of movie. Scenes that should have, didn’t feel pandering at all, the beach scene in particular being an own personal favorite. Relationships were all grounded and felt impactful, giving Goose’s death a bigger impact through Rooster. The other cast members such as Phoenix and Hangman (played by Monica Barbaro and Glen Powell, respectively), to name a few, all put their heart and soul into this movie, and it shows. It brought in a new wave of excitement for the movie theatre and was needed to breathe life back into the films we love. All I can say is thank you, to the directors, cast, crew, and more specifically Tom Cruise for making me excited about movies again, because that is what this movie does. This is the movie of the year for sure, if you haven’t seen it yet then what are you doing!

The curtains of Emerson's open bedroom window swayed in the cool night breeze while their sheerness enabled the moonlight to seep through. Only one-half of the pair was comfortable, however. Bradley's body was pressed firmly against Emerson's, his arm draped around her waist providing comfort and security. He fell asleep to the sweet smell of her rose shampoo. Yet, after the emotional evening Emerson experienced, she had a restless sleep haunted by memories and nightmares.
— — —
The new naval aviators had advanced to the stage of their training where the Navy finally allowed them to fly mission simulations in real fighter jets. It had been Emerson's biggest dream since studying aviators at her mother's work. And now, she was finally living that dream. The Naval Academy placed the aviators into squadrons and had them fly several times a day. The academy appointed Bradley Bradshaw as Emerson Blackwood's wingman.
The two had been practicing for a few weeks now, and Bradshaw was an intolerable wingman. Emerson honestly thought the Navy had paired them together for comedic purposes; their flying styles were completely opposite. Emerson was headstrong; she followed her own rules, and she wasn't afraid of seeing a little action. Bradley Bradshaw, on the other hand, was timid, almost as if he was unsure of his training.
After landing back on base, Emerson climbed out of her plane, dropping to the ground with an annoyed huff. She was grateful that was the last training exercise of the day; she needed a drink after flying with Bradshaw.
"You're reckless! You must not have anyone to mourn you when you come burning in!" Bradshaw snapped at Emerson.
Emerson whipped around to face the pilot, "And you sit on your perch like a rooster, waiting for the right time that never comes! You must have a lot of people counting on your return!"
Bradshaw's chest rose and fell quickly, his jaw clenched. "I don't have anyone. The one person who I thought was in my corner didn't believe in me," he admitted.
"So that's what it is, huh? You're second-guessing yourself. You think up there, and you're dead, Bradshaw!"
Despite Emerson's harsh words, she couldn't help but feel empathy for the pilot. She understood him; she didn't have anyone in her corner either. They were the same person; they just chose to handle it differently.
"Come have a drink with me, Bradshaw."
His expression changed to bewilderment, "What?"
"I said, 'Come have a drink with me, Bradshaw.' I think we could both use it."
That night at the bar changed the dynamic between Bradley Bradshaw and Emerson Blackwood. Instead of fighting their past, they learned to accept and understand that it's what made them who they are. It was the first time, in a long time, that the two had someone else to rely on.
— — —
Upon the acceptance of their Top Gun invitations, best friends Bradley Bradshaw and Emerson Blackwood made a bet that whoever graduated Top Gun with a rank lower than the other, then that loser would buy the winner dinner.
After graduating from Top Gun, Emerson was ranked higher in the class than Bradley; he was the loser who was forced to buy dinner. Although, it didn't upset Bradley that he lost the bet; he had other plans. He was going to take this opportunity to finally ask Emerson out. Since the Naval Academy, there had always been some 'unspoken thing' between the two. Though the best friends had shared many sober and drunken nights together, Bradley wanted to make whatever it was, official. To do it, Bradley decided he would cook dinner for Emerson. His mother, Carole, had been a phenomenal cook throughout his childhood and taught him many of her secrets before she passed.
Bradley had spent all day in the kitchen of his apartment. He wanted tonight to be perfect; a night that Emerson would always remember. He set their two plates down on the table and lit the candles. Knowing Emerson wasn't much of a wine drinker, he popped off the caps of two beer bottles. There was a knock on his door. Checking his hair in the reflection of his kitchen microwave, Bradley headed toward the door.
There she stood, but not in his favorite little black dress that showed off her every curve. No, instead, she wore the official, white Navy uniform. Emerson wasn't there for a bet or a date. She was there to say goodbye.
"Orders just came in," she spoke with watery eyes.
Bradley swallowed hard, "When do you leave?"
"Ship leaves in thirty," she said blinking back tears. Emerson couldn't even stay for dinner.
Bradley pulled his best friend into a hug. His arms wrapped tightly around her waist, his head nestled in the crook of her neck. Reaching him on the tips of her toes, Emerson's arms clung around his neck. He kissed the side of her head. Leaving Bradley had always been the toughest goodbye.
The two pulled apart. "Try not to miss me too much, Emmie Raye."
She wiped away a tear, "You're always in my heart, Bradley Bradshaw."
— — —
Maverick entered the room that the two naval officers escorted Emerson into. She was called in for reasons they wouldn't share over the phone.
She looked to Maverick. His face was red and puffy like he had just finished crying. "Dad, what's going on?"
"He's dead, Emerson."
"No—no—don't—he can't—" She waved her arms desperately.
Maverick gripped her arms to calm her, but she fought against him. He pulled her into a hug, clutching her body against his. "Bradley's dead."
She stood in front of his casket. Tears fell down like a stream, but she didn't bother to stop them. She couldn't believe this was her reality. How was she supposed to live in a world without Bradley Bradshaw?
The trumpets sounded, and Emerson stamped the brass pin into Bradley's casket. "You're always in my heart, Bradley Bradshaw," she whispered as the fighter jets soared above her.
— — —
Emerson woke in a terrified sweat. She sat up in bed, running her fingers through her damp hair. She was trembling. It was just a nightmare, but it felt so real. Probably because soon, it could actually be her reality.
Bradley woke up beside her. He sat behind her, his chest against her back. He rubbed his hands up and down on her arms comfortingly. "Em, it's okay. I'm right here."
She turned, scanning his face to make sure he was real. She placed her hand on his cheek, bringing their foreheads together, "I can't lose you, Bradley. I can't."
He cupped her face, "Emmie Raye, I am forever yours. You can't lose me."
